Not only will Grand Forks be getting an almost entirely new council beginning on Dec. 1, but a new chief administrative officer (CAO) will be stepping into that role. In a press release on Nov. 24, the City of Grand Forks announced that CAO Doug Allin is no longer with the city. “In keeping with the terms of his contract, there was a mutual agreement between council and Mr. Allin to enact provisions within his contract regarding Mr. Allin’s employment and as a result he is no longer employed by the City of Grand Forks,” said Sarah Winton, deputy corporate officer/communications, in the release. Current corporate officer Diane Heinrich has been appointed the acting CAO in the interim. “City council really appreciates Doug’s work with the city,” said Mayor Brian Taylor. “He has done an excellent job in bringing about a higher level of engagement and moving the community forward. It has been a pleasure working with him and we wish Doug all the best in his future endeavours.” In a statement from Allin, he said: “I would like to thank Mayor Taylor and council for their exceptional leadership and thank our team for an incredible experience. The city is fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated staff in all departments that take so much pride in the community. I am grateful for my time in Grand Forks and for the opportunity to work with so many amazing people. Thank you.” In an interview with the Gazette on Monday, Taylor said that Allin has been the best administrator he has worked with in his long history in politics. “Doug is a talented man who did a lot of good for the city in the time that he was here,” he said. Taylor said that the actions taken by council with Allin stepping down were in the best interests of the city. Council met with Allin in an in-camera meeting Friday morning. Heinrich was immediately named as acting CAO for a six-month period. Winton was named as acting corporate officer also for the same period. After sixmonths, or before, council can decide to hire Heinrich on as regular CAO or search for a new CAO. According to Winton, Allin and his family have left the area. He does not have another job lined up. Allin was CAO in Grand Forks for just over two years. He replaced Lynne Burch, who had retired.

It’s time for a Santa parade! CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

With the weather getting colder and a few white flakes falling from the sky, it’s beginning to look a lot like Santa Claus Parade time. That’s right, the Grand Forks and District Santa Claus Parade is going through downtown on Friday, Dec. 5 starting at Selkirk College at 7 p.m. The parade route will go down 72nd Avenue, turn left on Second Street, turn up Market Avenue and then end at Gyro Park where new mayor Frank Konrad will officially light the city’s Christmas tree.

“We’re going to have a tree light-up ceremony where our new mayor will welcome everyone and turn the lights on,” said James Wilson, executive director of the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and one of the event coordinators. “We’ll have hot dogs, hot chocolate and things to do for the kids. We’ll also have burn barrels which are taken care of by the fire department.” Wilson said he expects it to be a great event for families and anyone else. “It’ll be great for people with kids or just anyone to come on down and enjoy the Santa Claus Parade and the light-up festival.”

1909 Midway is to have a large sawmill. Its coal mines are developing well and railway projects seem to favour future growth of the town. 1914 Sometime last weekend someone entered the residence of Dan Fleming in the west end and ransacked the house of furniture. Mr. and Mrs. Fleming were away in Marcus. The residence of George Knox suffered the same fate under similar circumstances last Tuesday evening. Aggressive action by the city police should not be delayed. 1919 Phoenix, which for more than a dozen years had a double daily passenger service, is now without railway service of any kind. Passengers will in future reach Phoenix via Greenwood, and stage from there, a distance of three miles. 1924 Adolph Sercu, more familiarly known as “Forepaw,” leading light in the former mining camp at Phoenix, paid Grand Forks a visit after an absence of 15 years. He said that winter had already set in up on the hill, that there was three feet of snow in Phoenix. 1934 Bridesville: The Interior Greyhound bus stopped running through here from Penticton to Trail on Nov. 30 because of heavy snow. They intend to start again when the roads are open in the spring. 1939 Sam Camerson, well-known oldtimer of the Rock Creek district, died in Grand Forks Hospital on Monday. He came to Greenwood in the 1890s where he followed his trade of carpentry. 1944 Letter to the Editor: A few housewives here would like a corner in your paper to ask a few questions concerning retail prices. Here in Grand Forks we pay 50

cents a dozen for lemons. The same size in Nelson costs 25 cents. Butter here is two pounds for 85 cents and three pounds for $1.30, in Greenwood it is 41 cents no matter how much you buy. Blouses that are $4.25 cost $2.95 in Greenwood or Midway. Just why is it so expensive to live in Grand Forks? 1954 Grand Forks boxers had a good time Saturday evening when they didn’t lose a single bout to an outside boxer. The local contestants included Bobby Lawrence, Stevie Acres, Ricky Docksteader, Ernie Howe and Don McRobb. 1959 Three hundred and sixty-six marriage registration applications were filled out by couples of the Doukhobor faith at the hearings held by Magistrate Evans in Grand Forks last week. 1964 A plaque honouring the many volunteers during the years the library has functioned in Grand Forks was presented to long-time worker Mrs. E.S. Reynolds by board chairman Alan Clapp at the official opening of the library on Sunday. 1969 Grand Forks City Council has written to the Railway Transport Commission stating an objection to the proposal made recently to ship coal from the East Kootenays to Vancouver via a U.S. rain line. 1974 It will be up, up and away on Dec. 16 for 36 students and chaperones. Mr. and Mrs. Gumley of Grand Forks Secondary are traveling to Africa this Christmas. 1979 Re-elected mayor with 708 votes is Y. “Sugi” Sugimoto, with 448 votes cast for Peter Abrosimoff. 1984 Off to the Michael Jackson concert in

Vancouver this weekend, the winner of the Gazette’s Thriller contest, is 16-yearold Jeff Brown, a student at GFSS. 1989 Heart transplant recipient Dave Pickard of Grand Forks is scheduled to be released from Vancouver General Hospital this weekend. 1994 MLA Bill Barlee, saying Grand Forks is too dependent on the forest industry, feels the town needs to work on economic diversification and value-added wood products. “Some of our economic competitors around the globe are concentrating on value-added. We have not. We are still essentially hewers of wood and drawers of water,” Barlee said. 1999 A whopping two-thirds of Grand Forks voters turned out to cast ballots at last week’s election, choosing Lori Lum as new mayor. In the rural area, voters picked long-time resident and farmer Tony Lodder as new Area D director for the regional district board; Joe Tatangelo was declared Area C director. Greenwood Mayor Arno Hennig was reelected and Midway Mayor Jim McMynn retained his position by acclamation. 2004 It was the culmination of a three-year project this week with the installation of the bailey bridge across Sutherland Creek at Christina Lake. The task was handled by personnel from the Canadian Forces 44th Field Engineering Squadron from Trail. 2009 Grand Forks city council turned down the latest version of the woodstove bylaw. Coun. Chris Moslin, who sits on the Boundary Air Quality Committee which spearheaded the bylaw, said he will be bringing the issue back in six months. In defeating the bylaw, council members cited concerns about a possible $500 fine, and the use of city staff as “officers” to enforce the bylaw.

Hooge new tourist manager CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

Christina Lake didn’t go too far when hiring a new tourist manager. Ron Hooge has lived at the lake for 18 months after living in Grand Forks for over 38 years. Although it may seem a tourist manager for such a beautiful and popular destination as Christina Lake might be somewhat superfluous, Hooge told the Gazette he will be RON HOOGE plenty busy in his new role. “I owned five businesses in the area before retiring,” he said. “I came out of retirement recently to take on the position of tourist manager.” Hooge has received several accolades through the years. In fact, he and his wife received the City of Grand Forks inaugural citizens of the year award. “It was a unique honour for us,” he said. Hooge said he was offered the position after joking about how he wanted his grandson’s job at the tourism centre because the grandson was leaving in December. “I made a joke that I would love his job but I’m too old because it’s a grant position for students,” he said. “I left it at that. Then I got a call a little bit later from someone who had heard about that, telling me to come down for an interview.” Hooge was officially hired at tourism manager on Nov. 3. The following day he was off to Vancouver for the Visitor Centre Networking conference put on by Destination BC where he got to join 114 tourist managers from all over B.C. “The conference was really great,” he said. “It informed us about the direction Destination BC is going. It was a very enlightening day there to be with those managers. It was a good introduction to what I’ll be doing.” Hooge will work for the Christina Lake Tourism Society in close conjunction with the Christina Gateway Society. “Right now I’m developing an inside business plan for a gift shop at the Welcome Centre,” he said. “We’re adding, if it works out well, souvenirs of Christina Lake at the gift shop. We have lots of artisans and things made locally at the gallery in town. “Last year, we had 20,000 visitors. A lot are international and from the States. Many of them would like to have something to carry back in their suitcases. We’re hoping to get some little items.” Hooge is also spearheading a membership to get more Christina Lake businesses on board with the tourism society. He’ll also work as an ambassador for the Lake at various events. “It’s easy to sell the Lake,” he said. “It’s a great place to relax and just let go and party and have a good time at the lake. That’s what we’re all about.” Hooge said he has plenty of experience working in public relations. He added that he is happy to be in the position of tourist manager. “After a good rest of a year and a half, it’s nice to be back.” Hooge said Christina Lake is working on ways to improve tourism and attract even more people to the Lake both as visitors and as potential residents. “We’ve been developing our online service now quite extensively and doing our website on why you should come to the Lake. We’ve got Winterfest coming (in January) and the great Homecoming event. They always say (Winterfest) is bigger and better than ever but that’s totally true. They’ve added some more things.” Hooge has been hired to a half-time, year-to-year contract. He will work out of the Welcome Centre as well as his home depending on what is needed. “It’s exciting to be in this position,” he said, although he admits he’s still learning the ropes. “I’ve promoted Grand Forks for a long time so I’m certainly (ready to help promote Christina Lake). If 20,000 people are driving to the Lake to get away from the pressures of life for that ultimate holiday, then we’re already living in holidayland. It’s beautiful.”

Lilgert appeals conviction Gazette Staff

A Grand Forks resident is back in the news regarding a high profile case from eight years ago. Karl Lilgert is appealing his conviction last year in a fatal B.C. ferry sinking. Lilgret was found guilty last year of criminal negligence causing death and was sentenced to four years in prison but was released on bail pending his appeal. According to CTV, Lilgert turned himself into Grand Forks RCMP recently as part of his bail conditions. Lilgert was navigating officer on the Queen of the North vessel when it missed a turn and struck an island near Prince Rupert in 2006. Two passengers, Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette, have not been found since.

Lilgert was originally charged in 2010 and the jury had been deliberating since last week. According to Vancouver radio station News 1130, “The Crown alleged Lilgert neglected his duties when he missed a turn and then failed to take evasive action or slow the ship down, while Lilgert testified he was doing everything he could to navigate the ship through rough weather, and his lawyers blamed unreliable equipment and poor policies within B.C. Ferries.” In his appeal, Lilgert’s defence lawyer, Glen Orris, said that the judge “made numerous errors when instructing the jury, resulting in an unfair trial.” Orris asked that Lilgert’s release be extended until the B.C. Appeal Court makes a decision, which the court granted.

‘Time to move on’

The City of Grand Forks has lost another chief administrative officer (CAO) with the departure of Doug Allin. Allin met with the current council on Friday and parted ways with the city by “mutual agreement.” There is no official word on “why” Allin is no longer with the city. There has been a great deal of speculation on the streets and on social media on why he left. The fact that he chose to leave right before the regime change at City Hall leaves many to speculate he had concerns about how his role might change in the future. However, most in the know figured that Allin would not be with the city for very long. He is young, ambitious, hard-working and professional. He may not have been popular with everyone but it’s clear Allin got the job done and accomplished a lot in his short time with the city. Some of his biggest accomplishments were streamlining the city staff and workers and bringing about a respectful workplace policy. He was also very good at working with the province and other big players. He encouraged growth and development in the city with the award-winning “Open for Business” program. He also worked very well with Mayor Brian Taylor and the rest of council in bringing bylaws and policies up to date. As Allin said to staff, it was “time to move on.” And his leaving would be in the “best interest of the community.”

A short article in the Nov. 12 Vancouver Sun has revealed the latest trend in body part augmentation, a desire among many women to increase the size of their rear ends through exercise, plastic surgery and padded underwear. This compulsion for developing behemothic butts is, according to the article, the result of the growing popularity of those divas who proudly parade their posteriors in front of the paparazzi: Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé,and Nicki Minaj among others. Their derrieres have apparently become “de rigueur.” My cousin Louise was ecstatic when she read the arti-

cle. “Finally,” she proclaimed at a recent family gathering, “a little respect!” She then turned coquettishly away from me displaying her ample backside. “Now who’s the sexy one?” she asked rhetorically. Surprised by the sudden expanse of Spandex in front of me, I found myself at a loss for words, though I was sympathetic. Forty years ago, in her teens, Louise had acquired the nickname “Bubble Butt.” It was a time when thin was in, and Louise was anything but. Or more precisely, she was everything butt. While other girls counted calories with near anorexic intensity trying to out-Twiggy each other, Louise happily fortified herself with ice cream and Twinkies. Then one May afternoon Hugo Koshnikoff blurted out the hurtful nickname in front of her Grade 10 Auto Mechanics classmates. It was a

cruel thing to do, of course, but back then everyone had a nickname. Hugo himself was often referred to as P-U-go because of a frequent body order problem. He then tried to correct everyone’s perception by dousing himself with cheap aftershave. It didn’t work. The nickname was merely elongated to P-U-go Wash-it-off. A certain amount of selfawareness is a good thing when it comes to one’s physical appearance, of course. How many times have we wished others would consider what they look like before going to Overwaitea in ragged sweat pants and too-tight Tshirts, neither of which quite cover the bottom of their bellies or the top of their butts. Still, this new desire to aggrandize the gluteus maximus seems to be a step backwards in the pursuit of healthy attitudes toward one’s appear-

ance. At a time when society is attempting to halt the objectification of women, it hardly seems productive to add another body part to the list of bits and pieces that require alteration and enhancement. The media already bombard us with visions of ideal physiques for both women and men that are almost unattainable without surgery and/or extreme dietary and exercise regimes. The time and effort required to achieve them is so daunting that most people eventually give up and put on the sweat pants. With luck, the pursuit of humongous haunches will, like all fads, fade. Unfortunately, like every pursuit of physical perfection, it will leave behind behinds of abnormal girth gracing many women whose passing fancy for a full fanny failed to fulfill them as they had hoped. I hope Louise will not be too disappointed.

How can we afford an additional recreation facility? Editor, The Gazette: It was good to see the letter from Dylan Zorn, president of Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society, explaining the society’s thoughts on why citizens of the City of Grand Forks should continue paying taxes to both the city and RDKB to support continued existence of the ski hill. Perhaps now would be an excellent occasion to reveal more of the story of the ski hill and what they have planned. From the ski hill’s website, you can click on a link for “Master Plan Approved by Ministry.” The link takes you to the B.C. government website and a document approved by the government entitled “Phoenix Mountain Resort Master Plan, Community Alpine Ski Resorts – Type 1, Nov. 1, 2012.” The 54-page document reveals the ski hill admits a continuing need for funding from lotteries and/or taxpayers to help pay regular operating expenses; acknowledges the granting of additional land by the provincial government; and sets out a 25-year ambitious development plan to expand and enhance the ski hill, and to turn it into a year-round recreational facility. There is no indication of how the development plan will be financed, or the source of funding for future operating expenses once the land is developed. From the RDKB website, the Jan. 30, 2014

agenda for board of directors includes attached minutes of the Boundary Economic Development Committee dated Dec. 10, 2013. Ms. Barb Cornelius (administrator) and Ms. Ciel Sander (vice-chair) of Phoenix Mountain Association made a presentation to the committee. Minutes reflect they were “...requesting financial assistance from the regional district in a manner similar to how the Grand Forks arena, aquatic centre and curling rink are funded.” And “Ms. Cornelius questioned the process for having a referendum to establish a service and requested that if a referendum were held that it not be held in conjunction with the local government elections in November, 2014.” It is requested the Phoenix Mountain Ski Hill inform city taxpayers of their intention whether or not to pursue development of the additional lands granted by the province, how such development will be financed, and source of continued funding well into the future for operation, maintenance, repairs and replacement of this enhanced infrastructure. Considering the City of Grand Forks cannot afford the infrastructure already existing within its city boundaries, how can we be expected to afford an additional recreational facility outside of city boundaries? Sylvia Treptow, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: Do we really need a $35,000 sculpture paid for out of school funds? The plan is to place it on public land in Midway. The project would see the creation of a basalt sculpted talking/story circle erected in the entwined tree park in Midway. The place supposedly might have the potential for learning and storytelling for the communities of the Boundary; sculptures are interesting pieces of art. The questions is if we can afford this—we cannot afford opening the GFSS cafeteria and open now-closed washrooms on top floor of GFSS. These closures was for the purpose of saving money. We have over $1 million in surplus in our school district coffers not attached to anything. The money the government gives to public education is borrowed money, which we the taxpayers pay interest on through taxation. So here is a $1-million surplus sitting in a bank account collecting interest at the credit union. This is the only district in the province that

has a four-day week. The savings revolve around heating, cleaning the schools and operations of buses. Just think if they managed to shut Beaverdell school how much more of a surplus they would have. If it was not for the people organizing and standing up to the board through many presentations that school would be closed today. The school has kindergarden to Grade 3. Another issue is drugs. This town has a serious drug problem and you can be sure it is reaching into the schools. We need a system in place in the schools so less children turn to drugs. Now that would mean a drug and alcohol councillor and youth worker, which cost money. Through this election and past elections, trustees state they need more funding from the government. Remember it is about the kids. Val Rich, Grand Forks

Prior to the just passed municipal election, I made sure to be highly educated about all the candidates. I attended both all-candidates’ meetings, read the platforms in the Grand Forks Gazette, and listened to the interviews with some candidates on the radio. I knew everyone’s platform inside and out, what they represented, and even some of their Guest in the past history. I could intelligently Spotlight discuss any part of the election. Yet when Nov. 15 rolled around, I had JACOB NOSEWORTHY to stay at home; I could not vote as I am only 17. Despite any knowledge that young people have about politics, they are forced to wait until the first election after the arbitrary date of their 18th birthday. While many young people’s knowledge of politics far surpasses the average voter, they are continually barred from voting and expressing their opinions about the government by voting, a fundamental right in a democratic country. While many reasons contrary to allowing people younger than 18 to vote have been brought up over the years, they are all easily proved wrong. A common topic that is brought up when discussing the voting age is youth apathy. Many people believe that youth are apathetic towards politics and have no knowledge of it, so hence we should not be able to vote. I believe that is incorrect in two main ways. The first way in which it is incorrect is the fact that all youth are not apathetic towards politics. As has been proven by organizations across the country such as the Model United Nations and Youth Parliaments, numerous youth from coast to coast are incredibly interested in politics. Secondly, if someone is apathetic about government, there is no magical switch in their brains that flips at 18, and makes them start caring. There is no reason that an 18-year-old should be able to vote, but not a 16- or 17-year-old. A second common complaint about lowering the voting age is that young people do not pay taxes, or work. This complaint is completely incorrect. Every day a young person goes out to buy something, they pay the exact same GST and PST as everybody over the age of 18. However, youth have no say in deciding the taxes citizens pay, such as not being able to vote in the provincial HST referendum in 2011, despite paying the HST every day. While most people under 18 do not pay property taxes or own homes, that should not disqualify us from voting either. If paying property taxes is a requirement, does that mean anyone over 18 that still lives at home with their parents should have their vote stripped away as well? Finally, many people under 18 do work. A search around many local businesses after 4 p.m. or on weekends reveals how many people who do not have the right to vote do work, and contribute to society just as much as anyone else. Finally, many people believe that young people do not need to vote because their parents will vote on their behalf. Before women’s suffrage came to Canada, the common belief was that women should not need to vote because they have their husbands to do it for them. The faulty “logic” behind that statement is also the “logic“ to why until 1918 in Canada women could not vote either. It is complete draconian thinking and false. I believe the voting age in Canada as a whole should be lowered to at least the age of 16. It is unfortunate an arbitrary age must be set, but that is how the laws of a democratic country work. For Canada to be considered a true democratic country, the voting age must be lowered, to allow young people to be able to have their say. – Jacob Noseworthy is a Grade 12 student in Grand Forks.

We wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS to you and to let you know how very much we appreciate everything that you have done for the City of Grand Forks during your 33 years of service! To state that you will be missed is an extreme understatement. You are one of those rare people who instantly became a friend instead of “just a co-worker to many. You have made such a difference to the City with your unending optimism and knowledge. You always showed a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty and have proven that it does not take a loud voice to accomplish tremendous things. Working with you was an absolute pleasure, both because of your caring for the community and because of your kindness. Know that your work has been greatly appreciated, and that you have made such a big difference. Thank you for your dedication for all the hard work that you did. It has been a joy to work with someone so passionate, calm, and professional all at the same time. We truly wish you all the best! From Council, Management, and Staff at The City of Grand Forks

Sending fighter-bombers is hypocrisy

Editor, The Gazette: An open letter to Prime Minister Harper I want you to know that I consider your attack of Putin at the G20 meetings was a disgusting example of bullying that shames Canada and all Canadians. To use that forum, while hiding under NATO’s skirts, is reprehensive in the extreme. The situation in the Ukraine was indeed engineered by outside forces, but

if you have looked at the facts and yet concluded that Russia did the engineering then your education was a waste of time and money. If on the other hand you know that the “get Putin at any cost” is a scam and a fraud, and you continue to support that position, then you didn’t learn ethic behaviour or logic. Grand Forks Gazette

Editor, The Gazette: A few weeks ago, I was in a local fast food restaurant where I witnessed something I wish I hadn’t. While sitting there, I watched an elderly man (75+) walk up to the counter to place his order. He was quite slow in deciding what he wanted and paying for it. There were two young men behind him (mid twenties), clearly put off by having to wait, shaking their heads and rolling their eyes. When the ordering was complete, the young men happened to sit a table away from me where I couldn’t help but hear the comments. “Those old &$%#@*% piss me off, they’re so #@&%*#*%# slow.” It saddened me to hear that, and I wondered if they ever thought about who the elderly are. They are the parents of all of us younger people. Without them, none of us would be here. They are people who have worked all their lives, ex-

perienced and endured a lot. Many of them have lost a great deal, a partner, a home, their health, their freedom to get around, and in some cases take care of themselves. I work in a care home with the elderly, and I am reminded every day of how lucky I am to have my health and the ability to do simple things like dress and feed myself, not to mention the joyful things like dancing. Many of us take these abilities for granted until we no longer have them. This brings me to the answer to “who are the elderly?“ We are all the elderly, in 40 years, 20 years, or five years, unless we pass away early for some reason. There is no escape from getting old, we will all be there some day. Try to pause before being impatient with the elderly. They deserve to be respected and treated with kindness. Remember, they are all of us. Dave Jackson, Grand Forks

other countries and people is against all Canadian values. You make a huge cry (and photo ops) about the killing of two Canadian soldiers while simultaneously sending fighter-bombers to Iraq to kill soldiers and we don’t know how many women and children. Hypocrisy of the worse order. I want you to know you do none of the above in my name. Jack Blower, Grand Forks

Tax not fair

Editor, The Gazette: On Nov. 5, a letter was published saying “Isn’t right to deny vote in the city.” I live in the city and when I use services provided by the regional district such as the swimming pool or the arena, I must pay a user fee. Also if I take waste to the landfill site, I pay an exorbitant fee for garden waste or branches, material they compost and use to bury the garbage, saving them from digging sand for that purpose. Sometime I use the roads maintained by the regional district but otherwise I receive nothing from the district that I can see. On my $2,048 2014 tax bill, there is $463 for “regional services tax” and I cannot vote at the regional district, I have checked with friends in Area D and they do not pay taxes to Grand Forks. This does not seem fair either. Maybe we can make this one big municipality where everybody can vote for any of the candidates. Paul Pinard, Grand Forks

The Christina Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) will be holding their Christina Lake Watershed Management Plan Annual Review on Dec.3, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., which will be facilitated by Area C Director Grace McGregor. This event is for anyone that is interested in learning about the state of the watershed from the experts, as well as those who want to learn about all the programs and projects the CLSS has undertaken over the last year. Get your questions answered by experts, and you will be able to provide the CLSS with ideas on initiatives that you would like them to consider for 2015. These discussions will take place at the Christina Lake Community Hall, and lunch will be provided. Contact the CLSS by phone: 250-4472504, or by email: clss@shaw.ca.

Christina Lake. “The vehicle hit black ice and skidded on the road and went down a 10-foot embankment and rolled over,” said Harrison. “There was extensive damage to the vehicle; however, no one was injured thankfully.” The driver of the Ford Ranger was a 74-year-old male from Pass Creek, B.C.

Truck stolen

On Nov. 16 at 4:26, RCMP received a report of a theft of a truck. “A red 1986 Ford Ranger had been stolen from behind Magnum Auto on Central Avenue,” said Harrison. “The vehicle was stored at that location with no insurance. It was last seen on Friday (Nov. 14).” Harrison said police believe it might be related to an incident that occurred a week or more ago involving a vehicle stolen out of Trail area and recovered here. “Police chased the other vehicle and the guy got out and ran away on foot and we didn’t catch him,” he said. “We think he may have gone and stole this vehicle but we’re not sure at this point.”

Break-in

On Nov. 17 at 8 a.m., RCMP received a complaint at their front desk regarding a break-in at the Loomis office on Industrial Road. Members attended and found several boxes had been cut open, said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. “The building was locked and all the windows were locked and there was no sign of how entry was made,” he said. “The alarm was set but didn’t trigger. At this point they aren’t sure what was missing if anything. They are obviously having their security system checked. There was an indication that someone got into the building.” Anyone with any information on the break-in is encouraged to call Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.

Drunk driver chats up police

On Nov. 17 at 10:40 p.m., RCMP officers were at the PetroCan station in Grand Forks when a resident who had driven into the station came up and started talking to them and the gas station attendant. “They noticed that the man had a strong odour of liquor on his breath,” said Harrison. “As a result they gave a demand for a roadside screening and he

refused to provide a sample; therefore, the immediate roadside prohibition documents were served on him.” The vehicle was impounded; police found open alcoholic beverages in the vehicle. He was issued a violation ticket for open liquor in his vehicle. “As a result, he ends up with a 30-day impound of his vehicle and a 90-day privilege to drive under the immediate roadside prohibition,” said Harrison. Multi-vehicle accident

On Nov. 22 at 11:10 a.m., RCMP received a report of a motor vehicle accident with damage over $1,000 that occurred on 72nd Avenue. “There was three-vehicle collision which occurred in front of Home Hardware on 72nd Avenue,” said Harrison. “A red Chevy Blazer turned left on Third Street, spun and hit two pick-up trucks parked in front of Home Hardware. The driver was not injured.” All vehicles were driveable. The driver was a 79-year-old female driver from Grand Forks driving a 1996 Chevy Malibu.

Church robbed

On Nov. 23 at 6:30 a.m., RCMP received a call from Gospel Chapel about the robbery of a laptop computer from inside the building. “It appears at this point that someone may have hidden in the church and then when people left and locked up, they stole a laptop computer and departed because there are no signs of entry,” said Harrison. The matter is currently under investigation.

Collision

On Nov. 23 at 7:03 a.m., police responded to an accident with damage over $1,000 on Highway 3 at Sleepy Hollow Road. “(There was) a single vehicle collision at the top of Spencer’s Hill near Sleepy Hollow Road involving a blue Ford Ranger,” said Harrison. The Ranger had its back end in the ditch and was partially blocking the left hand lane, he added. The driver, a 47-year-old female from Fruitvale, was not injured other than saying her neck was a bit sore. “Every year when we hit the snowy and icy weather we always have accidents in that particular area,” he said. “It seems that that part of the road is really slippery.”

Wednesday’s Puzzle Solved Last week’s puzzle solved

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, Spotlight Films will be presenting Whiplash, a psychological thriller/ intense drama written and directed by novice director Damien Chazelle. This is a film about tyranny, passion that morphs into obsession, and a secret to be revealed. It focuses on Andrew Neyman (Miles Teller, The Spectacular Now, Divergent), an aspiring young jazz drummer who enrols in a prestigious music conservatory—his ambition, to become one of the greats. While at the conservatory he comes to the attention of its most respected but notorious and borderline psychotic instructor Terence Fletcher (J.K. Simmons, Juno, The Closer) who has him transferred to his jazz band. What ensues is a compelling and intense interplay between the two as Andrew’s passion spirals out of control and he is driven to the edge of his ability…..and his sanity in his attempt to please the ruthless teacher. En route to his goal, Andrew decides his girlfriend Nicole (Melissa Benoist, Glee) is a burden to his career goal and dumps her. There is a great conversation between Andrew and his uncle Frank (Chris Mulkey, Captain Phillips) which provides some valuable insight into Andrew’s character.

Wilson said they are encouraging businesses to sponsor a tree. “There will be about 10 trees that will also be decorated by businesses and displayed throughout the winter,” he said. “It should be quite beautiful. As you drive through town you’ll see the big tree lit up and you’ll see about 10 little trees lit up at Gyro Park.” Head parade organizer Beverly Osachoff said preparations are going well for this year’s version of the parade which will have the theme, “Not a creature was stirring…” “We’re very excited to be adding some new things to our most popular parade event,” she said. “This year the city and chamber are going to be doing a tree-lighting ceremony. We’ve changed the route slightly to accommodate that.” Osachoff said the parade is a great way to kick off the holiday season. “It’s going to be a beautiful event,” she said. “We’re always excited to do it because it seems to be everybody’s favourite parade event of the year. It’s always nice to have some cheesy fun in the middle of the dark, cold winter.” The downtown business association sponsors the parade, while the Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce and the City of Grand 8th Annual Community Christmas Hamper Program

For any of you who think of J.K. Simmons as the warm, fuzzy dad in Juno, the reassuring dude in the Farmers Insurance Group ads or the voice of the yellow M&M, brace yourselves. His performance is Oscar calibre. Teller, 27, who has played drums since he was 15, developed blisters on his hands due to the unconventional style of jazz drumming. Some of the blood was on the drumsticks and the drum set….and that is how you dedicate yourself to your art. This film, shot in 19 days, is based loosely on Chazelle’s own experience as a wannabe jazz drummer. Good thing he decided his forte was film making. To date Whiplash has won seven awards, including Audience and Grand Jury in the dramatic category at Sundance and has been nominated for three awards including Best Actor for Teller at the Gotham Awards. It also scored a hefty 96 per cent with Rotten Tomatoes and 87 per cent with Internet Movie Database. Whiplash is guaranteed to keep you riveted. If you enjoy a well done flick (despite the jazz pretense) you may well save yourself a good deal of regret by catching this movie….seriously. Whiplash will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the GEM Theatre.

Forks sponsor the light up. Thanks to the sponsorship of the downtown businesses, entry to the parade is free, said Osachoff. “That enables us to keep it free for anybody who wants to participate,” she said. “Of course, everyone is welcome. We love to encourage any individual, group, business, come one, come all.” Osachoff said there will be prizes awarded for the best entries. “You get extra points for following the theme,” she said. “The judges love that. The theme of the parade is ‘not a creature was stirring…’ We love to see creativity. Lots of lights, bling and music always wins extra favour with the judges. The idea is for people to come out and have some free family fun and support our downtown businesses. (Businesses) will be open late for shopping.” Santa will, of course, be the big star of the parade and he will making the trek from the North Pole to take his place in the parade. People can find out more information at the parade’s Facebook page. Anyone interested in entering the parade can request a registration form at gfparades@gmail. com or contact Beverly at 250-442-9662.

The Grand Forks Secondary senior girls basketball team got off to a strong start at the Kootenay single “A” girls regional volleyball championships recently at Selkirk College in Castlegar. The Wolves swept through the round-robin with wins over Golden, Nakusp and Fernie Academy to earn the #1 seed from Pool B. Unfortunately, GFSS ran into Boundary Central in the first round of the play-off round, a team they had not beat all season. BCSS fought back from down two sets to one to beat GFSS in five sets and advance to the semi-finals. The Wolves came back to beat Fernie Academy to finish fifth. Vanessa Pavan (#9) and Emma Tkach go for the block for GFSS in their round-robin game against Nakusp. Craig Lindsay photo

Bruins goalie Kiernan Matsuba tries to hold down the fort as the Rebels in black buzz around the net in the first period of Friday’s game at the GF Arena.

The visitors scored two early goals once again in the second to take a 5-1 lead. Pearson scored the Bruins final goal at 12:52 of the second assisted by Lukas Peters and Josh Gladman. Starting netminder Kiernan Matsuba was pulled after giving up five goals on 12 shots. Mark Pearson fared a little better, turning away 17 shots out of 20 after replacing Matsuba early in the second. The Border Bruins were back in action Tuesday night (after press time) at home against the Nelson Leafs. The

team then travels to Fruitvale on Saturday for a match-up against Beaver Valley. Veteran forward Lincoln Lane leads the Bruins with 27 points in 25 games including six goals and 21 assists. Centre Michael Rand is second with 13 goals and 22 points. Third in team scoring is Matt Lucero with 19 points including nine goals. Captain Tucker Brown leads the team in penalty minutes with 63. Jacob Mullen is the top goalie for the Border Bears with three wins in 17 games and a 3.91 goals against average.

Active living is a key to happiness

Active living is a key component to happiness and good health. Our mind and bodies are built to move and interact. Newborn to 99, we need to keep moving our bodies and engaging our minds. There are limitless opportunities and ways to achieve an active lifestyle. You don’t have to be an athlete or a social butterfly. Simply go for a walk and say hello to your neighbours. Take swim lessons, learn to curl or enroll in a cooking class. Show up for a community drop-in program like badminton or pickle ball. Go to a Bruins game or participate in public skating. Whatever you do, do what “moves” you. There is much going on at GFREC providing loads of opportunities for engaging socially and physically. We are here to help you “find your fit.” Action at the arena This weekend there will be an out-

After being crushed by Castlegar at home 8-3 on Friday, the Bruins looked a lot a better a day later on the road in Castlegar. Mind you, they still lost but this time by only a 4-3 margin in overtime. Of course, some would say that it’s better to lose by a lot because at least you didn’t let the game ‘slip away.’ At the Castlegar Complex, the Bruins fought back from a 3-0 deficit heading into the third period and scored three unanswered goals to force overtime. Scoring for GF were Michael Rand, Lincoln Lane (assisted by Rand) and Mitch Pearson. Unfortunately, the Bruins gave up the game-winner at 4:09 of overtime to Bryan Lubin of the Rebels. Jacob Mullen was solid in net for the Bruins, stopping 38 of 42 shots. On Saturday, the visiting Rebels crushed the Border Bruins 8-3 in an inter-divisional match-up Friday night at the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena. The Rebels went up 2-0 quickly with Cal Owens scoring 34 seconds into the game and Ryan Rosich scoring two minutes later. Bryson Yee brought the Bruins within one (assisted by Mitch Pearson and Stephan Shikaze) at 14:49. Rebs went up 3-1 12 seconds later with a goal by Mike Bhatoa. Grand Forks had several chances to get even in the first period but couldn’t finish.

Junior girls win gold at regionals CRAIG LINDSAY

Grand Forks Gazette

The Grand Forks Secondary (GFSS) junior girls volleyball team traveled to L.V. Rogers in Nelson for the West Kootenay championships and came away with top spot. The girls played well in the round-robin, finishing second in their pool after beating Stanley Humphries (Castlegar) and splitting with Mt. Sentinel (South Slocan) and the host Bombers. In the quarter-final round, the Wolves met Boundary Central (Midway) and won in two straight games. In the semi-finals, GFSS squared off against J.L. Crowe (Trail) also in two straight. In the final, the Wolves face Nakusp who had knocked off perennial powerhouse Mt. Sentinel. “We won the first game handily in the best of three but Nakusp came back to win the second with some inspired defensive play,” said coach David Dunnet. In the final game, GFSS got out to an early lead at 6-4. After some long rallies, the Wolves held the lead and got to game point at 14-11. “On the final point, Shay McPeak hit the winning spike (back Row L-R) David Dunnet (coach) Rachel Steinbach, Riley Steinwhich was unreturnable,” said Dunnet. “Every player bach, Shay McPeak, Charity Starchuk, Georgia Grenier; (front row Submitted photo made important plays that contributed to the wins. After two years of volunteer effort and support, Phoenix Mountain put into service this past fall, an Italian-made four-wheel drive centre articulating machine designed for steep slopes. The tractor was donated to Phoenix Mountain by Steve Buzikievich of Summerland and although it didn’t have a motor, one was found in Bonnington, B.C. thanks to Tom Brach, a parts dealer for European tractors. The Phoenix Mountain Alpine Ski Society wants to thank everyone who helped the project come to fruition.

Kurtis Reid Day

March 8, 1952 November 15, 2014 With such sadness we say Goodbye to a wonderful man. Kurt passed away peacefully in Kelowna after many health battles over the past few years. Kurt was an adventuresome, fun loving, hard working and very sensitive man. Kurt travelled in his early years and had many great stories of his year spent living in Australia and New Zealand. Kurt worked for many years in the logging industry, he loved his time spent working on the ocean as a boomman both in Gibsons and Stewart B.C. Later in life Kurt decided to change careers and became a very successful realtor. Kurt and Lee met in 1977 and it was love at first sight for both. After 37 years they were still as much in love as the day they met. Best friends forever. Referred to as “the lovebirds” by the nurses in the hospital. Kurt had a passion for the ocean, boats and fishing. He was so happy to have gone on a West Coast fishing trip with two great friends where he caught the biggest fish and the stories would light up his face for the rest of his life. Predeceased by son Paul in 1990. Survived by his soulmate Lee, sons Mike (Sheri), Adam, parents Ches & Edy Day, siblings Laurie (Jim), Linda (Perry), Dale (Debbie), “Brother George” (Wendy). In-laws Gwen Furniss, Lynne & Verne Sjogren and Wendy & Don McDermid. Numerous aunts & uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews. No service by request. Kurt’s remains will be spread at his favorite fishing spot in Shearwater off “The Blue Dawg” next fishing season.

Gertrud (Trudy) Papp

It is with great sadness we announce the loss of our mom and grandma Gertrud (Trudy) Papp. She passed away at Hardy View Lodge after a long battle with Parkinson’s on November 18th, 2014 with her family by her side. Trudy was born December 1st, 1938 to Steve and Marie Szeidl in the small town of St. Jonas, Hungary. Trudy was predeceased by her husband Steve Papp on September 18, 2009, both parents, her sister and brother. Left to mourn are her daughters Lisa (Jack) Anderson and Kathy Papp; her grandchildren, Sandra Poznikoff (Lee), Andrea Poznikoff (Vance), Colin and Devin Anderson and many, many relatives in Hungary. Trudy grew up and received her education in Hungary. She met and married Steve in March of 1965 and followed him to Canada, where they began their life in Whitehorse Yukon. Trudy enjoyed the outdoors, she loved to garden, walk, camp and fish. Trudy loved to cook and bake which was enjoyed by everyone especially Steve. In 1980; while on vacation, Trudy decided she really liked the Grand Forks area and began looking at properties, her intentions were a surprise to the entire family but when her mind was made up there was no changing it. We moved here in July of the next year. Trudy worked as a chambermaid for a local hotel and then as a sales clerk at the Grand Forks Delicatessen on a part-time basis, leaving lots of time to dedicate to her husband, children and grandchildren. A funeral service was held on Monday, November 24th, 2014 at Grand Forks Funeral Home with the burial following at Evergreen cemetery. The funeral arrangements were entrusted to Deborah Baker of Grand Forks Funeral Home, Grand Forks, B.C. Happily reunited with her loving husband, Steve.
