Moonlight Madness! - 14
Normally it’s either too snowy or too warm to go skating on the ponds and lakes around Revelstoke. Not last week, when a cold and dry high pressure system caused Revelstoke to freeze over. Once word spread you could skate, everyone flocked to the Flats to take advantage of it. The ice was crystal clear in many places, and you could even see wildlife underneath. Then the snow came and winter as we know it is back — and for powderhounds, it’s not soon enough. Alex Cooper/Revelstoke
What’s new this winter in Revelstoke? Alex Cooper
editor@revelstoketimesreview.com
Winter has finally arrived in Revelstoke in the form we know it — a blanket of white covering the city. This weekend is opening day at Revelstoke Mountain Resort and pretty much the official start of winter in Revelstoke, even though people have been out playing in the mountains and on frozen ponds for several weeks now. To mark the occasion, we touched based with all of Revelstoke's major winter recreation groups to see what’s new this winter.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort The big question on many peo-
ple's minds is, "Will RMR open this weekend?" The answer, as of Monday morning, was a resounding “Yes” from general manager Rob Elliott. Prior to the recent snow, the cover on the upper mountain was thin. There was a metre of snow at the top of the Stoke, 60 centimetres at the top of the Ripper but only a few centimetres at the top of the gondola. Fortunately, 46 centimetres of snow fell over the weekend, and with more in the forecast, opening day is a go. The Stoke Chair will be open, and the Ripper Chair is a maybe. What's new on the mountain this year? More glading was done on the upper mountain. The TallyHo Glades on the southside were doubled in size, meaning more tree skiing over there. On the Ripper
Chair, more glading was done in the Glades of Glory. The resort also modified Chopper to cut out the flat bit half-way through. The resort has expanded its backcountry offerings with the new BCA Avalanche Ranch at the top of the gondola. The ranch is a new transceiver-testing area where people will be able to learn and hone backcountry skills before heading out of bounds. At the base, the retail store has doubled in size and the resort will now be offering bootfitting to customers.
Revelstoke Snowmobile Club Expect the trails to be a little bit smoother this year thanks to the Revelstoke Snowmobile Club's brand
new groomer — a Prinoth BR 350. According to new president Daniel Kellie, the club is the first in western Canada to purchase a new groomer. It is expected to show up in town in early December. The machine was purchased for about $300,000, with $100,000 coming from the tourism infrastructure fund and the rest through a loan from the Revelstoke Credit Union. The club installed a webcam on the Boulder Cabin, allowing sledders to get a look at conditions before they head out. The Yamacam is sponsored by Yamaha and can be seen on the club's website. Visitors will also be happy to know the club now accepts debit and credit cards, making it easier for buying and selling tickets. The club is hosting its annual fundraising dinner with Team

sworn on to the Revelstoke Board of Education at their meeting last Wednesday. Bill MacFarlane and Leslie Savage are joining incumbent trustees Alan Chell, Jeff Nicholson and Elmer Rorstad on the board after the five were acclaimed during the recent elections. Macfarlane is a former city councillor and former president of the Revelstoke Teachers Association, where he formed part of the BC Teachers Fed-
eration's bargaining committee during the 2011-12 labour negotiations. "Based on my past experience in working life I thought I had a lot to offer to the position," he said. He said he wants to work on the relationship teachers have with trustees and the province and to be an advocate for the public education system, including long-term sustainable funding. "As a teacher I was an advocate for public education and as a trustee I'm going to be an advocate for public education." Savage is probably best
known in Revelstoke for writing a food column for the Revelstoke Current. She comes to the position after many years as a teacher at both the grade school and postsecondary level. She said she wants to promote a STEM curriculum — science, technology, engineering and math. She also stressed the importance of leadership in the schools, saying that her best days when she was a substitute teacher were when the principal would greet each student by their first name at the start of the day. "I'd like an approach in which the leadership is very
visible and is very much in touch with what's going on, not just through reports," she said. Savage plans on starting a blog called Imagine Tomorrow that will be hosted at Stanford University's edublogs.org and will make herself available to the community at Sangha Bean for 1.5 hours prior to each board meeting. "What I hope to do is encourage a conversation about schools and education amongst parents and teachers in Revelstoke," she said. "Anybody that has any kind of issue about the schools, I'd be happy to talk to them. That's my plan."
School enrolment continues slow decline Alex Cooper
editor@revelstoketimesreview.com
Enrolment at Revelstoke schools continues to decline, with the biggest drop in numbers coming at Revelstoke Secondary School. The numbers were presented to the Revelstoke Board of Education by superintendent Mike Hooker at last week's board meeting. There are 367 students at RSS this year, down from 389 last year. Those numbers don’t
include 19 international students, up from 11 last year. Enrolment at Begbie View Elementary is up slightly to 247 students, from 239 last year. Enrolment at Columbia Park Elementary is down slightly, to 201 students from 207. At Arrow Heights Elementary, enrolment is up to 121 students from 114 last year. The report also includes class-size averages. Kindergarten classes have an average of 19 students, grade 1–3 have an average of 21 students,
and grades 4-7 have an average of 24 students. That compares to averages of 17, 20 and 25 respectively last year. While class sizes from kindergarten to grade three are similar at all three schools, AHE generally has smaller classes from grades 4–7. Class sizes at Revelstoke Secondary School range from an average of 20 in applied skills classes to 27 in physical education. Hooker noted there are two more students entering kinder-

I am humbled by your overwhelming support. I had the privilege of running with sincere candidates who all showed their commitment to our city by running for office. Congratulations to all those who were elected. I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and I will do my best to represent the values and concerns of all of our citizens.

garten than expected to graduate this year, providing hope that Revelstoke's long enrolment decline is going to bottom out and plateau. "It's only a couple more years where we'll continue to go down slightly down, but not long before we level out and RSS levels out between 350-400 students," he told the board. Class composition numbers, which used to be the subject of public reports, have not yet been released.
Our evening was a great success because of your support.

Lights were installed on the Mickey Olson Loop this fall, meaning it will now be possible to ski at night without a headlamp. The Nordic club put up 89 light standards over a six-kilometre loop at a cost of $220,000, with funding coming from the Columbia Basin Trust, tourism infrastructure fund, and Economic Opportunity Fund. The lights are programmed to turn on as it gets dark and turn off at 9:30 p.m. The club has a full-time manager this winter. Natelle Fitzgerald will be running the ticket office and handling marketing for the club. She’ll also look after the club’s new fleet of rental skis, which was bought in collaboration with the Revelstoke School District. The club is entering the big time by hosting a BC Cup race on Jan 24-25. The BC Cup is the highest level of racing in the province. Up to 400 racers are expected to show up, with double that many people cheering.

First blast of snow leads to multiple Trans-Canada crashes Alex Cooper
editor@revelstoketimesreview.com
The first snowfall of winter led to a multitude of crashes on the Trans-Canada last weekend. There were 16 in total according to the RCMP, three of which resulted in highway closures. The chaos began on Friday, Nov. 21, with three crashes west of Revelstoke, including one that sent a man to hospital. "Roads are slippery and snowy. We've had four or five motor vehicle incidents so far," Staff-Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky told the Times Review that morning. "(They are) directly attributed to snow and winter conditions, but it's more attributed to speed, lack of winter tires and not slowing down for winter conditions." The most serious crash happened when a westbound tractortrailer crossed the centre line and struck an eastbound Ford F250 pickup truck near the Enchanted
Forest tourist attraction west of Revelstoke at around 6:30 a.m. The two occupants of the semi were uninjured, but the lone-occupant of the F250, a 65-year-old B.C. man, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke. The crash closed the highway for several hours. *** The second closure happened on Friay at around 10 p.m. when a tractor-trailer jack-knifed and blocked both lanes of traffic about 25 kilometres east of Revelstoke The highway re-opened at 1 a.m to single lane alternating traffic and both lanes were open by 4:30 a.m. No one was injured in the crash. *** The Trans-Canada Highway was closed most of Saturday after a semi crashed and took out a power pole thatmorning. The incident took place three kilometres west of Three Galley Gap at around 8:30 a.m. when the

driver of a westbound tractor-trailer unit lost control, crashed into the power pole, and then rolled over on its side, blocking both lanes of traffic. The driver was issued a ticket for driving without due care and following too closely. BC Hydro was called to the
scene to repair the downed pole and power lines. It took them almost all day to conduct the repairs. The highway opened at about 4:20 p.m. after an almost eight hour closure due to the downed power lines. *** The RCMP is reminding drivers to drive according to road con-
ditions, especially considering the slushy and wet road conditions. Grabinsky said many of the crashes were due to aggressive driving, such as speeding, following too closely and dangerous passing. Three-quarters of all accidents involved commercial transport trucks.
'Level playing field' for B.C. liquor stores Tom Fletcher Black Press
VICTORIA – B.C. government liquor stores are losing their wholesale price advantage next spring, but will also have the option of opening Sundays and evenings with chilled offerings to help them compete with private stores. The change to a single wholesale price for every product takes effect April 1, the same date B.C. is permitting private or government liquor sales in separate facilities inside grocery stores. Attorney General Suzanne Anton said the change is to create a "level playing field" for liquor retailing in B.C., after private store operators complained that the existing system gave government stores an unfair price advantage. Currently the Liquor Distribution Branch, the government monopoly wholesaler, sells products to government stores at cost and sets a minimum price for all retailers. The wholesale price for private retail stores is 16 per cent less than that retail price, rural agency stores pay 12 per cent
less, and stores that sell only B.C. wine get a 30 per cent discount. A new wholesale price structure for the thousands of products sold in liquor stores will be the same for all retailers, set to retain the $1 billion in revenues the province takes in annually from liquor sales. Anton said she doesn't expect substantial changes in retail prices. The B.C. Government Employees Union, representing government liquor store staff, welcomed the Sunday openings and increased hours to help their stores compete. "The move to a single wholesale price will only be in the public interest if it protects and expands over time provincial revenue," said BCGEU president Stephanie Smith. Premier Christy Clark said the government's liquor policy review showed "people really like their government liquor stores" because of the wide selection and well-trained staff. Clark agreed with Smith that government stores are well positioned to compete with private outlets, which are generally not unionized and pay

Mark McKee will take a seat at the head of the table, flanked by Connie Brothers, Scott Duke, Trevor English, Linda Nixon, Aaron Orlando and Gary Sulz. When they sit down for their first official meeting, they'll immediately have some important work to do. Here's five issues they'll have tackle in their first few months on the job: The budget. City finances were a big issue during the recent election campaign. Almost all councillors ran on a platform of reducing debt, limiting tax increases and finding spending efficiencies. There were no calls for program cuts, and only Orlando said he'd be

willing to increase city staffing if it helped the economy. There's no set date for the budget to be presented to council, but I imagine the new council will want to see the first draft sooner rather than later. They have until May to pass a budget, but the goal lately has been to pass it earlier in the year. The big question is how quickly the new council will look to make their mark on the budget. Will they push for big changes right away, or will they take their time and wait until they learn more about city programs before making any moves? We’ll find out in a few months. The Big Eddy Waterworks. The city is already moving on addressing this issue, having hired a consulting firm to study the waterworks and prepare a report for council. The report will be used to apply for Building Canada Funding in order to offset the cost of upgrading the waterworks so it meets Interior Health and firefighting standards. An initial report is expected to go to council before Christmas, with the final one due in mid January. The deadline to

apply for funding is February 18, so council will have to make some quick decisions. The biggest issue they'll face is getting approval from the Big Eddy Waterworks ratepayers. It won't be a cheap fix and Big Eddy residents and business owners will have to pay their share of the repairs. Union negotiations. The city is in the midst of negotiations with the Canadian Union of Public Employee local. As well, the firefighters' contract is expired, though negotiations haven't begun with them yet. The results of these negotiations will have a significant impact on city spending, since staffing is one of the city's single biggest expenses. Vacation rentals. The first two public hearings for vacation rentals take place on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. There are two homes looking to be zoned for vacation rentals — one at 1585 Birch Drive and another at 1000 First Street West. It will be interesting to see what kind of responses the city gets on these applications and how council responds, especially if the public submissions oppose the applications. There

are other vacation rental zoning applications being processed by the city that will be going to council in the coming months, so these first decisions will set the tone for the rest. Senior management. Council will have to resolve the situation between Tim Palmer, the city's Chief Administrative Officer, and Alan Mason, the director of economic development. As it stands, the two don't get along and their relationship came to a head late last month when Palmer suspended Mason with pay, only to have his decision overturned by council. Palmer was forced to issue an apology and he was stripped of his authority over Mason. If I'm on council, I want to make sure all my senior management staff get along and work as a team. The two men either need to resolve their differences and learn how to work together, or one of them has to move on. Given Mason's history in the community and the fact Palmer was the one who was reprimanded, council might be thrust into the tough – and expensive – decision of finding a new CAO.

Revelstoke Community Foundation celebrates 15 years of giving back Contributed by Revelstoke Comunity Foundation
The Revelstoke Community Foundation celebrated its 15th anniversary this year. Originally created as a legacy project for the City of Revelstoke’s 100th anniversary in 1999, the foundation’s endowment is drawing closer to a significant milestone of $2 million. This has been made possible by the generosity and trust that individuals, families and the corporate community have provided to the Community Foundation. The directors of the foundation are truly appreciative of all the donors. The Community Foundation continues to support many different areas. It is this flexibility that differentiates the foundation from many other non-profits and charitable organizations. In the spring of 2014 grants totaling $33,550 were provided to: — Community Connections Food Bank — Community Connections family programs — Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy — Revelstoke Multicultural Society
— Revelstoke Hospice — Revelstoke Childcare Society — Revelstoke City Museum — Revelstoke Railway Museum — Revelstoke Bear Aware — Revelstoke Arts Council — North Columbia Environmental Society — United Church — Revelstoke Women’s Shelter Society — Royal Canadian Legion — Revelstoke Homecoming 2014 — Revelstoke Theater Company — City of Revelstoke Youth Action Committee — Revelstoke & District Humane Society The foundation’s scholarship endowment fund provided $20,375 in scholarships and bursaries to graduating students from Revelstoke Secondary School in 2014. Of particular interest is the W Earl Campbell challenge. Campbell is a former resident of Revelstoke. In 2002, Campbell started with a $2,500 challenge that netted an additional $5,783. He has repeated with many challenges since 2002 such that the now named Hillcrest Campbell Award Fund has increased to over $50,000. The Campbell Family will match the
donations of others up to $12,500 during 2014. Asked why he is doing this: “It is very simple. I would never have been able to complete a university degree over five years without financial support,” he said. “I established a bursary to assist students going to UBC from outside Vancouver. In over 15 years, no Revelstokian ever received the award. We decided that we needed to assist not only RSS academic winners, but those who needed financial assistance as well.” Tuesday, Dec 2, has been designated “Giving Tuesday” across Canada. We encourage individuals, businesses and charities to get together to give back and support the causes that they believe in. Join all Canadians to celebrate the second Giving Tuesday by donating to your favorite charity. If you cannot afford to donate financially then perhaps think about volunteering. There are so many programs that desperately need volunteers or your expertise. Your donation will make a huge impact and you will feel wonderful doing it. So think about giving back on Tuesday Dec. 2.
What does financial literacy mean? Lisa Nguyen
Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy
November is Financial Literacy Month. What does that mean? The federal government's Task Force on Financial Literacy defined it as, "Having the knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible financial decisions." Sound like something you can relate to? The City of Revelstoke, in partnership with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy and with funding by Columbia Basin Trust has launched a new project on financial literacy. But what does this mean for those living in Revelstoke? As part of the project, we will be offering learning opportunities aimed at empowering individuals and families so that they can make informed decisions. This November, we invite you to increase your awareness of financial literacy, especially with Christmas and holiday spending just around the corner. Christmas, and many other occasions involving gifts and spending can add a lot of stress and anxiety to our lives.

“I dread the impulsiveness and rushing of holiday shopping,” explains single-parent Michelle Cole, chair of the Poverty Reduction Working Group. “If possible, I avoid buying an item the first time I see it in the store. By walking out and sleeping on it, I give myself the time to determine if this is a gift I can genuinely afford to give. At the very least I walk around the block to think about it before I go back in the store to make the purchase.” This could be a great time to take stock of our spending and check in to see what our needs and wants truly are. Perhaps you may even want to create a budget for yourself so that you don't fall into the trap of overspending in December and dealing with debt in January. Let's save ourselves from that now! Here are some ideas to help you through the holiday season: — Re-gift! Take a look at what you have at home — you may have the perfect gift right under your nose. — Make a budget and stick to it. With holiday parties to buy new
clothes for, gifts to give and events to attend it may be wise to plan ahead to stay financially ahead. — Be intentional with your gift giving. Are you giving because you feel obligated? Look at non-consumer alternatives — memories are possessions too. Take advantage of sales. Moonlight Madness is on November 28, why not check it out and find some deals? Now the next challenge will be to carry this throughout the year. We can help you with that. Keep your eye out for upcoming workshops and programs. All learning opportunities are free of charge and child minding can be provided upon request. Still interested in learning more? We have a survey for feedback on topic ideas for our winter program, Money Skills. Find the survey at fluidsurveys.com/s/ money-skills. There is a prize draw for completing the survey. Maybe you could use the prize or re-gift it! Questions? Please contact Lisa Nguyen with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy at cbal.lisa@ gmail.com or 250-805-2305.

-- to host the two one-act plays which were supposed to open Thursday. While set to be performed at the Powder Springs, a scheduling mix up has meant cancelling the first week of production. “We’re looking for the community to step forward and help us find a venue,” said Imogen Whale, who is directing the play Louder, I Can’t Hear You. Whale, along with Martin Ralph (who is directing Boy’s Play) indicated that they are willing to work with whatever space may be available. Rather than selling tickets, admission will be by donation with half of the proceeds being donated to a yetto-be-decided local not for profit. “There’s 30 plus people who have volunteered their time,” said Ralph. “We feel that in a community like Revelstoke someone will step forward.” In the meantime, Ralph said the Revelstoke Theatre Company is resilient – and they are confident a venue will be found in time for a December 4 opening. “We’ve been practicing what we’ve been calling ‘guerilla theatre’ for some time now,” Martin said. Whale, too, was looking at the positive aspects of the last minute change of venue. “It’s a real chance to play to the audience,” she said. It’s also Whale’s first time directing a play. “I had amazing support from my [directing] mentor Lyn [Kaulback],” she said. “It’s neat to be part of a club where you can put in an application in the summer to direct a play.” Whale, who is directing Louder, I Can’t Hear You, describes the play as “pretty hilarious. It’s about a woman who is constantly ignored. It’s almost a farce.” In contrast, Ralph’s Boy’s Play is a

much more emotional look at relationships. “It’s about two young men who come from troubled lives, living with the reality of feeling unloved. They spend a weekend camping and they both making decisions that affect the rest of their lives – I really can’t say much more about it without giving it away,” he said.
While both plays are likely to evoke different emotions, each looks at human relationships. “The ironic thing is we haven’t seen each other’s plays yet,” said Martin. Louder, Boys will run December 4, 5, and 6. Location TBA.

With all types of comedy and a wide range of topics, Roman Danylo Live has a little something for everyone.
BC Hydro does not expect project work to affect recreational use of the Illecillewaet dyke pedestrian trail. However, please make your safety and the safety of your pets a priority and be mindful of heavy equipment working in the area. Excavators and dump trucks will access the drainage ditch from Downie Timber yard, Vernon Avenue, spur roads from Downie Street, and the corner of Willow Street and Edward Street. The maintenance project work is expected to take a couple of weeks and be completed by early December 2014. 4424

In comedy, almost anything can happen. Roman Danylo is no stranger to this, with a successful 20-year career that has taken him from the stage to television and theatres around the world. There was a show in Victoria about 20 years ago where a surge of adrenaline hit him and he ran up to the second story balcony and jumped about three metres onto the stage below. There was a stretch of nine shows at the Adelaide Fringe Festival where he somehow ended up having to do one-armed push ups each show. The run ended with Danylo very, very sore. At one show, the opening act was the Extreme Bikini dance team. At another, the only source of lighting was a buffet table heat lamp. Then there was the show where he got to share the stage with one of his idols, Martin Short. “It’s really amazing when you idolize somebody and watch somebody growing up doing their characters, and suddenly you find yourself with that character,” Danylo told me. “He’s right across from you, staring at
you, talking at you. That’s a very strange moment, it’s like stepping into the TV.” Danylo, who is from Calgary and based in Vancouver, is bringing his show to the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre this Saturday, Nov. 29. Called Roman Around the Country, the show features a mix of standup, sketch comedy and imrpov, complete with audience participation. Danylo launched the show in 2008 after the five-year run of his CTV and Comedy Network TV show Comedy Inc. ended. The show was a mix of sketch comedy and improv; at tapings the cast would perform each skit twice — first as written and then with improvisation. “We would do a second take where we would improvise everything we’d do in our lines and experiment with the entire form of it, which was always way more interesting. Suddenly things would come alive,” he said. “I think people tangibly feel that when things are happening for the first time. That’s why the improvbased stuff is most exciting.” A typical show begins with what Danylo describes as a “Seinfeld-esque” standup routine. “Every day observations kind of
Contributed
thing,” he says. He’ll incorporate some jokes about Revelstoke, a town he’s passed through many times but hasn’t spent a lot of time in. The second half is where the improv happens. To help him out, Danylo is bringing Denise Jones, the artistic director of the Vancouver Theatre Sports League with him to Revelstoke. For a little more help, they’ll be inviting audience members onto the stage. “We do a lot of interacting with audience members, so you never know what they’re going to do when they get on stage,” he said. “It’s your job to make them look good. We role with whatever they do, so that’s a lot of fun.” Danylo said he loves coming to smaller towns, where the atmosphere is looser than at big, important gigs like a TV show taping. He called it the “Holy Grail of performing.” “What happens when it’s a big deal show like a TV taping, the comedy gets very tight and the performance gets tight, but it’s really not the best show,” he said. “What happens when you get to the smaller towns, I find I put on a better show for people. That’s what I find fun about it.” Catch Roman Danylo at the

Revelstoke retailers celebrate 33 years of Madness! Judy goodman
Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce
This year marks the 33rd season of welcoming the holidays with a night of ballistic shopping! This tradition, founded in 1981 by the then owner of Style Trend Clothiers, Mark McKee, and a group of downtown merchants, began as Midnight Madness. The shops closed in the afternoon to prepare for deep discounts and store specials. It is rumored that many of the owners and their sales team sported pajamas for the event! Moonlight madness is the same day as “Black Friday” in the US, but the date is the only similarity. This event is home grown with history in our community and is about a night out with your friends and family! Throughout the years there have been many activities including music, movies and mayhem throughout downtown. This year’s event is designed to bring back the excitement of those early years. The Chamber of Commerce, Community Economic Development, Public Works and the Tourism Infrastructure Committee have

Crime Stoppers entry box for an autographed Dan Hamhuis Canucks jersey will be at Pharmasave from 6–9 p.m. — entries are by donation, $5 minimum. As part of Welcome Week you can attend a free Yoga session at Balu at 4:30 PM or check out Stoke FM’s cool new studio from 6–9 p.m. — send out a ‘shout’ on the air, learn how to create your own show, and find out about volunteering at our community radio station. Alpine Village shops are offering shoppers hot apple cider and cookies while others are keeping it simple like “The Big Guy” at Work’ n Play Clothing and just putting everything on sale for this event! Moonlight Madness is a great tradition upheld by Revelstoke’s retail leaders, as noted below, who continue to work together with the Chamber of Commerce to make this promotion happen! These folks are planning great deals and staffing up so that shoppers can take full advantage of some serious retail therapy!
Next up! Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, December 6th at 4 PM. Register your float or entry at www.revelstokechamber.com or visit the Information Centre at 301 W Victoria.

Grizzlies get three of four points as they hit halfway point Cassandra Federico
Special to the Revelstoke Times Review
The Revelstoke Grizzlies took three out of a possible four points this past weekend with an overtime loss on the road, and a huge win over their division rivals on home ice. On Friday night, Revelstoke travelled to Armstrong to take on the North Okanagan Knights. Despite being outshot 48-24, the Knights were victorious, beating the Grizzlies 4-3 in double overtime. North Okanagan opened the scoring at 18:38 in the first period. The Knights would also scoop the second goal on a powerplay at 11:00 in the second period. The Grizzlies had many scoring opportunities in both periods, but they couldn’t capitalize on any, leaving them trailing the Knights 2-0 going into the third period. Revelstoke came out strong in the third period, with a goal only 26 seconds in scored by Louie Federico, assisted by Josh Pilon. At 17:52 Ethan Waitzner tied the game with help from Pilon and Riley Creighton. Tristan Simm scored to take the lead at 12:25, assisted by Kieran Brunetti. The Knights responded with a power play goal from Trent Redschlag at 7:10 to even the score. Neither team would take the lead back in the third period, sending the

game into overtime. Less than a minute into the second period of three on three over-
time, Logan Geefs scored to take the win for the Knights. The Grizzlies were back home
on Saturday night to take on division rivals the 100 Mile House Wranglers. The Grizzlies were
looking for revenge on the Wranglers, after their 3-2 loss the last time the Wranglers were in town.

MOONLIGHT Revenge they got by beating the Wranglers 6-3 in front of an excited crowd at the forum. The Grizzlies were first to get on the scoreboard with a goal from Federico, assisted by Pilon and Waitzner at 10:10 of the first period. The Wranglers evened the score at 14:43 in the second period. Kyle Baron then took the lead back for the Grizzlies at 12:23 with help from Kenny Batke and Pilon. The Grizzlies went into the third period with a 2-1 lead on the Wranglers. Their one goal lead didn't last long, when Travis Roche tied the game for 100 Mile on the power play goal. Revelstoke responded to restore their lead at 13:03 when Kenny Batke scored on a bouncing shot from the neutral zone. Derek Miskiman got the assist. Revelstoke kept the momentum going with another goal from Tyler Chavez Leech assisted by Steven Fiust and Carter Huber at 8:11. Fiust added a fifth goal three minutes later to give Revelstoke a three goal lead. Nick Hendrick narrowed Revelstoke’s lead with a third goal for the Wranglers at 4:26. To finish off a scrappy third period, Jeff Bochon drove to the net, and scored an unassisted, short-handed goal with less than two minutes left in the game to give the Grizzlies a 6-3 win. Coach Ryan Parent felt that the Grizzlies played two good games this weekend, but they were lacking in a few areas on Friday Night. "Despite out shooting the other team substantially, I think we needed to focus a bit more on some specific

areas in the offensive zone," he said of the Friday night game. He felt that the team improved their play on Saturday in the areas they were lacking on the previous night, which lead to a more successful outcome. "The guys were much more determined [on Saturday], and I liked their compete in both the offensive, and defensive zones" Parent noted. He praised the play of new goaltender Aidan Doak on Saturday night. "He has proven to be a strong asset to our team" Parent said. The Grizzlies are one game away from reaching the halfway point of the regular season. They currently are sitting in fourth place in the very tight Doug Birks division, two points back of Sicamous and three points behind 100 Mile. Parent is happy with how much progress the young team has made in the first half of the season. "We are playing the right way now, and we need to keep forging ahead, and playing hard," he said. Parent stated his hopes for the second half of the season. "We want to be a strong presence in our division, and I think the way we are going now is in that direction, so we need to continue going in that direction," he stated. The Grizzlies will be travelling to Sicamous this Tuesday November, 25 to take on their division rivals. On Friday they are heading to Princeton to take on the Posse. The Grizzlies will be back at home on Tuesday, December, 9, when the Kamloops Storm are in town.

New rules coming for local election spending Tom Fletchers Black Press
VICTORIA – Municipal election campaigns are like mushrooms that pop up every few years, with voters still in the dark about who’s fertilizing them with how much money. That’s why the B.C. government waited until the first elections for four-year municipal terms were
held to examine how campaign spending should be regulated, says Coralee Oakes, B.C.’s minister for community, sport and cultural development. Oakes promised there will be new rules on spending and donations from property developers, unions and other donors to municipal council and school board candidates by the next province-wide municipal vote in 2018. A legisla-
ture committee started working on it in October, with recommendations due by Nov. 27. “What we found is that for a lot of the organizations, if you’re not in election mode, they are not formed,” Oakes said. “So we knew that if we were to do stakeholder engagement, we need to do it when the elections were happening.” Some urban municipalities see substantial campaign donations
from special interests, with only the requirement of disclosure long after votes are counted. In Vancouver, where developers and civic worker unions spend heavily, Mayor Gregor Robinson’s Vision Vancouver party and challenger Kirk Lapointe’s Non-Partisan Association were pushed to voluntarily disclose their major donors before Saturday’s vote. Imposing campaign reform on
local governments is an awkward task for the ruling B.C. Liberals, who have refused to give up their multi-million-dollar advantage in corporate donations over the NDP and other challengers. NDP leader John Horgan said Monday the opposition will soon table its annual private member’s bill calling for the elimination of corporate and union donations from provincial campaigns, as has been done in other provinces and at the federal level.
