Play putting new spin on Cinderella BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
The familiar story of Cinderella will take on some new twists when the play runs at Prince Charles Theatre from Dec. 4-6.
Writer and director Frank Goodsir said that the production — “a locally written comedy with music” — allows the Footlighters Theatre Society cast and crew to “change dialogue to fit a scene or an actor playing in that scene. And we get to choose our own music!”

Homelinks students may have earned a temporary reprieve on Nov. 18 after the School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board rescinded an April 22 resolution that secondary students be supported through the Prince Charles Secondary School’s learning centre in the Pathways building by June 2015. Retiring South Rural trustee Annette Hambler-Pruden made the motion to rescind the resolution because, seven months later, no consultation with Homelinks parents (a stipulation of the April resolution) has taken place. “The timelines are just too tight and it doesn’t include the broader community,” she said at the meeting, seen in Creston via videoconference from Nelson. Hambler-Pruden said the program currently has 7.75 full-time equivalent students in grades 11 and 12. “Once the uncertainty of the program is cleared up, there will be a lot of people interested in it,” she said. The process begins with a facilities review, currently taking place across the district (for which a town hall meeting was held Monday at Prince Charles Theatre). See HOMELINKS, page 5

The program trains volunteers to work oneon-one with children who are struggling with some aspect of their reading. All tutoring is done at the school during regular school hours. A three-hour training session in basic reading strategies is required. The children are chosen to participate in the program by their teachers (with

Each child receives one-onone tutoring for 30 minutes three or four times per week for eight or more weeks to practice and improve their reading. Parent and community volunteers are needed at each school to support the students. The volunteer commitment is one and a half hours one morning or afternoon a week for eight to 10 weeks. Newly elected Lower Kootenay Band (from left) Coun. Sandra Luke, Chief Jason Louie and Coun. Destyni Basil at friday’s meet and greet.
Louie wins second term as LKB chief BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Jason Louie was re-elected Nov. 19 and will continue as chief of the Lower Kootenay Band for a second term. Also elected were Destyni Basil and Sandra Luke. In what he describes as one of the highest percentage turnouts in memory, Louie topped a ten-candidate slate with 45 votes, with Basil and Luke tying for second with 30 votes each. “I’m still here to represent everyone, even the ones who didn’t vote for me,” Louie said in a meet and greet session at the LKB gym on Friday. Louie told about two dozen people in attendance, including Creston Mayor Ron Toyota and Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks, that it was Basil’s father who originally encouraged him to run for band council in 1996. “I didn’t really know what that meant,” he said. “But I was nominated and elected as a council member.” On that council was Anne Jimmie, who has retired as a councillor. “Anne has become an aunt to me,” Louie said. “I lost my aunt six years ago and Anne has filled that road. She is my mentor. She says she will stay involved and support our band and community, and embrace her role as an elder. That’s very important.” Basil, originally an LKB resident, returned to the community “a couple of years ago” and becomes the youngest member of council. “I am excited to be more involved,” she said. “I just want to learn. I’m a curious person and need to know how things are and the way they work.” A heavy duty mechanics student at College of the Rockies, Basil was clearly pleased to become a councillor. “I’m still kind of shocked — I’m just so pumped,” she smiled.
Luke returns to council after a two-year break. “My loss two years ago prepared me spiritually,” she said. “It was good to take time off. I’ve had two years to figure out what I want to do.” On the night of the election Luke was in Cranbrook, “singing and drumming with the Métis association,” and it was only when she was leaving that she got a phone message: “Congrats!” “I didn’t know who the other two were who were elected at the time but it’s cool,” she said. “I’m eager to get back in there and work, not just with band council, but the new Town of Creston council and RDCK.” With the announcement that Coun. Robin Louie has resigned, Luke encouraged fourth place finisher Jared Basil (with 26 votes) to run in the byelection. “You were really outspoken and people listen to you,” she said. After what he said was an often bitter election campaign, Louie said he wants to involve elders more in community decision making. “I want to encourage our elders to come to our meetings. They should be watching over us,” he said. “We know our community is divided. But if we had a council that is divided it would make things that much harder.” He said that the LKB has become more connected to the Creston Valley than ever before. “Some initiatives will be announced in the future and they will be for the better.” LKB members will vote in the New Year on a land agreement proposal that would see the community sell some land adjacent to the RDCK landfill site and receive two parcels of land on Kootenay Lake in return. Louie said economic development will not include a push for a casino. “We have agreed that we don’t want a casino in our community,” he said. “But we will focus on issues that will generate money and jobs for our people.”

Boundary Adjustment
PUBLIC NOTICE What is What is the Boundary Adjustment about? The Town of Creston has requested the Province of British Columbia to adjust the legal boundaries between the Town of Creston and the Regional District of Central Kootenay for the portion of Erickson Street and Ash Road, shown outlined on the sketch plans below. This change would only affect the public right-of-way (i.e., roadway), not private property. The purpose of the boundary adjustment is to redefine the boundary along Erickson Street to the northern edge of the road right-of-way, thus giving ownership and responsibility for the entire roadway to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. In exchange, the Town acquires a portion of Ash Road along the Town’s north boundary line. Map 1: Erickson Street - West

Two losses for Thunder Cats Cinderella BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
After a couple of weeks tied for third in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats are in fourth place after losses to the Summerland Steam and Osoyoos Coyotes. Friday’s 4-3 loss to the Summerland Steam had an average start, said head coach Jeff Dubois, and goals by Nichols Kovacik, Carson Cartwright (unassisted) and Marcel Fuchs put the Thunder Cats ahead by the middle of the second period. “At that point, we kind of let them back in it,” said Dubois. By the end of the period, the Steam had scored again, then tied the score midway through the third period. Jack Mills scored the game-winner on a power play with 7:29 remaining. Dubois said the team’s level of preparation, focus and work ethic were lacking on Friday, and they turned that around the next night in Osoysoos in a game that resulted in a 1-0 loss against the league’s top team, “a good offensive team in their own rink.” “We went in and played a real hard 60 minutes and generated some opportunities,” he said. “We just couldn’t score.” This weekend, the Thunder Cats host the Beaver Valley Nitehawks on Friday, taking on a team that beat them 2-1 in their last game. “They’re also the team that knocked us out of the playoffs last year, so I think there’s always a bit of extra motivation there,” said Dubois. And on Saturday, the Thunder Cats visit the Fernie Ghostriders, whom they last beat 4-0 in Creston.

“We know how to handle those teams and what we need to do to be successful,” said Dubois. •For the Osoyoos and Summerland games, the Thunder Cats were missing one of their top defencemen, Maverick Lynes, who saw his first Junior A action on the weekend, playing three games with the BC Hockey League’s Trail Smoke Eaters.

ities review with any thought of closure in mind,” Rebecca Huscroft, board chair and South Rural trustee, told the Advance. SD8 Supt. Jeff Jones said that facilitating the Homelinks project has been “bigger than expected,” and that the open-ended timeframe will be easier on staff. “We’ve bumped into many, many roadblocks when we’ve tried to support Homelinks over
the last five years,” he said. After the April 22 resolution was rescinded, a motion by retiring Town of Creston trustee Mel Joy was carried, resolving to review the Homelinks and other district learning programs in Creston following the facilities review. “It broadens it to the family of schools instead of Homelinks,” she said.

From page 1 “There is a greater pool of musical talent willing to come out and audition for parts,” he said. “We even had teenagers come out who were willing to sing. For Cinderella we had 39 adults and teenagers audition for 21 roles in the play — it made casting more difficult. “There were five of us on the audition committee, so we discussed the merits of each actor before the final decision was made. While I listen to my committee and did change my mind on occasion, that final decision is mine.” With the Christmas season upon us, the Footlighters’ production promises “an evening of fun for the whole family,” and many of the families attending will be watching their children on stage. Working with students is something that comes easily to Goodsir. “I enjoy working with the children — we have kids from grades 1-8, so it is a challenge to keep them all engaged with what is happening on the stage. As a teacher I always used drama in any of my classes, so it was natural for me to write shows that involve kids. I’ve also enjoyed watching the printed words come to life. The adult cast has been marvelous at taking their parts and making them their own. Some have often used their own time to rehearse scenes outside of our scheduled rehearsals. “Of course the most fun is when we put the whole thing together —
adults, children, costumes, makeup, lighting, scenery, props. That’s the most wonderful feeling, especially when it works. And it always has!” While the adult cast members are encouraged to be spontaneous with their dialogue, Goodsir reminds them that it is a family show. “This is a family show involving children so they must watch their ad libs. This cast has been very good about that.” Music and humour are emphasized in the seasonal production. “The seniors who make up at least 50 per cent of our audience will especially enjoy the songs we have picked. Most of them are from my era but the children enjoy singing them as they are brand new songs to them. And the audience always gets a kick out of the local jokes. It’s good, clean humour!” Among the highlights, he said, will be the performances of Lady Petunia (Brian Lawrence) and Lady Violet (Jason Smith), Cinderella’s two ugly — “and I mean ugly!” — stepsisters. “Just watching Brian go through the agony of learning to walk in high heels has provided us with a lot of fun at rehearsals!” Befitting to the Christmas season, Goodsir said the show has been wonderful to work on. “Everyone from the cast to production crew have been so cooperative. Many things are done before I even have to ask or go do them myself.” Tickets are $10 (adults), $8 (seniors/ students, and $5 (under 12), available at Creative Fix and Kingfisher Used Books.

But others might, and I think it’s important that we have a sense of that. Laura says that the survey should let us know “how our own community is doing in different domains of wellbeing and how we stack up to other parts of the world.” It’s an observation that resonated. With the Town of Creston about to embark on a new official community plan, results of the survey can be an important tool as we discuss how we want our community to evolve in the coming years. We might be surprised that there are areas that we don’t have to put much emphasis on, where we are quite satisfied with what we already have. And it might give us direction to improve areas that we think are already pretty well covered. I think we live in a pretty darn good community. But I also know that it can be better in many ways. This survey will give us a chance to spend a few minutes to evaluate our own perspective, and the results will give us some insight into how our friends and neighbours feel about life’s intangibles. I will happily participate in any effort that encourages us to measure our worth in ways that aren’t strictly economic. We can use the occasional reminder that life isn’t only about money, and how much we have or don’t have. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.
Looking ahead to spring of 2015, there seems to be an abundance of new plants coming to market, and a good number of compact shrubs suited to a variety of uses in the landscape. Usually new plants appear and are trialled in demonstration gardens around the northern hemisphere. Then they are showcased at larger trade shows, introduced to more nurseries and production is ramped up to meet future demand. Nowadays, for every plant with a trademark, royalties are collected and sent to the breeder. The new plants are promoted and advertised to the general public in magazines and articles. I try to keep up with the new offerings and bring in a selection every spring. I look for heat tolerant plants (for our summers) that are cold hardy to zones 2 through 6 (Peace River to Creston). I like plants that offer at least two or more seasons of interest — nice spring flowering plants with an interesting leaf colour or texture for later in the year, or perhaps good branch structure or distinctive bark for winter interest. If it had a fuzzy leaf or perhaps an odour that the deer would find unappealing, that would be good for some of the choices. Long-term, some of the outstanding plants make it into our collective
some improvements in growth habit, production or even resistance to the skin of the fruit cracking. Only a few weeks ago I was harvesting some multicoloured carrots. Apparently, they haven’t always been bright orange. In any case, they washed up nice and made for a really neat dish, different taste and interesting presentation. If this all sounds like good news to you, I’ve saved the best for last. There has been even more research and development done in the way of flowers. Every flower breeding company, and there seems to be quite a few, have released dozens of new varieties. This is one area that is hard to keep up with. Better colours, better growth habits, stronger root systems, disease resistance, tolerance of the summer heat or the cool, wet springs — these guys never stop. My favourite seed company offers 277 colours and mixes of pansy seed. I pick three. For my part, I select a few new flowering annuals to trial in the greenhouse every spring. It helps keep them looking fresh and challenges me to grow new crops. This keeps life at the nursery just that much more interesting. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

New plants coming in spring conscience. Others don’t. Some novelty plants are just a little too strange to become popular. Pink blueberries were a poor seller. Other plants weren’t quite winter hardy enough.
Nursery Notes Evan Davies They might grow fine in the landscape but if I have to grow them in pots for a few years first, the winter losses from frozen roots means nurseries have to work twice as hard for half the number of saleable plants. I call these production hiccups. For 2015 there will be some new clematis and grape vines, and a colourful new assortment of hydrangeas and roses, to name a few. If you are an avid vegetable gardener there has been a stunning new variety of colourful and nutritious additions to all the seed catalogues. Even heritage seed and heirloom varieties are now more available than ever before. I noticed one seed company has introduced Heirloom Marriage plants that are hybridized from popular old varieties. They offer

Women’s bodies are not ‘public property’ To the Editor: I am very disturbed by the column “The Teen Take: Do You Know the Proper Woman?”, written by LoRae Blackmore (Nov. 13 Advance). I am not sure if it is meant to be sarcastic, but I take great offence at you implying that once a woman steps out of the privacy of her home her body becomes “public property” for men to do what they see fit, to touch and cat call at will, without consent, or repercussion. You say that if a woman wears the wrong clothes or makeup, or walks a certain way she will be raped, and if she neglects certain preventative measures, it’s her own fault for getting attacked. Excuse me, but no matter what a woman wears, it is never an invitation for rape and what an awful thing to believe, especially for a young woman such as yourself. To imply that a “proper woman” never uses birth control is just foolish, women before us have fought long and hard to make damn sure we have the right to choose when to become a parent. Now, we have rape pregnancies, and it is all the fault of the woman? Give me a break! Finally, if your most “worthy goal” you could ever achieve is to “gain approval and admiration of men”, then you really need to go back under the rock you crawled from! I truly hope that this column was written in jest, because it is very disturbing, especially written by a young woman. You will not go far believing this, my dear. We do not need the approval of men to make it in this world, and our bodies remain our own property always! Kyersten Kerr West Creston Response to the above letter at www. crestonvalleyadvance.ca/opinion/letters: Kyersten, knowing LoRae as I do, she agrees with you 100 per cent. She’s likely glad that if you thought she wasn’t being sarcastic, you were offended. After seeing the initial reaction to Jian Ghomeshi’s story, it caused many people to wonder if society didn’t still hold to these old conceptions of women she described in her column. Thank you for reaffirming that our bodies are our property. Michelle Mungall Nelson-Creston MLA
Self-worth does not hinge on ‘morality’ To the Editor: (Re: “Be fair to both sides”, Nov. 20 Advance) One of the columns in the newspaper has made stark the mental gymnastics people go through to justify and perpetuate rape culture. In North
opiNioN LiNe
American society, women have been demeaned and objectified as a form of advertising, girls are increasingly reporting rituals of self-harm and eating disorders, and studies show 54 per cent of college women have reported rape — one such example being the protests at one U.S. college in support of Emma Sulkowicz, who was forced by administration to continue to attend classes with her rapist, rather than expelling him. There are a myriad of things wrong in what was stated last week, but I don’t want to acknowledge that behaviour. I want to instead address this to young people of any gender identity who might be reading: Your body is not an object, your sexuality is not shameful, and you are not here to please others. Respect of your identity and gender is not earned; a decent human being understands others deserve full respect and bodily autonomy by existing, no matter their physical appearance or what clothes they might wear. Your body is here to support you, for you to enjoy and to express your identity as makes you feel happy and confident. Your self-esteem is not shameful, and your self-worth does not hinge on the opinions of others or their arbitrary “morality”. Please do not pay any mind to slurs like “slut”, “whore” or any other form of insult directed at your sexuality. As long as the sex you are engaging in is enthusiastically consensual, there is nothing shameful. You can have one partner forever; you can have a new partner every week; you can be asexual and never have a partner. Any of these options are healthy. The next time someone tries to police your identity with their unhealthy and toxic “moralities”, please crush these views under your heel with the knowledge that you are the only person you need to please. I’d like to add to women of any age reading: Please stop shaming each other. Stop buying into the destructive notion that we must exist with permission, within sexual and visual parameters, to be a “good” woman. Protect each other, support each other and stop tearing other women who are different than you down. The media has sunk its teeth well enough into the self-esteem of young women without the older women in their lives damaging their self-worth further. Asha Wainionpaa Creston
Canada a partner in illegal wars To the Editor: Lest we forget, Canada has been making and selling war weapons, and has been a dependable silent war partner for 30-plus years for America’s illegal wars. In fact, the U.S. couldn’t wage war without Canadian investment and input. Canada makes a hefty profit from war. Our retirement funds and Canada Pension Plan are invested in war, so locked in legally that we can’t divest our savings from war investments. Harper’s Conservatives have upped the war/military profile on media, with parades, the 1812 war reenactment and now a national holiday to honour our soldiers. Are we going to honor all the foreign maimed and dead on their polluted lands, as well?
War is not romantic or honourable, defending some peoples’ rights (but not others’). War is about death, misery, trauma, insanity and accelerated climate change. War is about stealing other nations’ resources, and poisoning land and people for centuries with depleted uranium. For the folks who believe in the “second coming” (Harper and his petro-religion cronies), war in the Middle East is pitting fundamental Christians against fundamental Muslims, forcing their conception of Armageddon upon the planet. As if love- and tolerancepreaching Christ would choose these warmongers as the “chosen ones” and leave the rest of us six billion “unchosen” to die in the fiery flames of hell. It is time to reject these life-threatening war cultists! Choose and vote for peace and prosperity, not war and austerity. Susan Eyre Yahk

New postal outlet not needed To the Editor: I inquired as to why Canada Post has opened a second outlet in our town of 5,000 people while discontinuing home service to 10,000 homes across Canada. The excuse of Saturday service and longer hours could have been accomplished in current post office. It seems to me to be an attempt to get postal workers dispensed with in favour of lower paid retail clerks. If a second outlet was needed, why not at the other end of town? Doug Johnston Creston
Machines sacrifice democracy for speed To the Editor: (Re: “Machine will speed up Creston election results”, Nov. 13 Advance) I was dismayed to discover that the town of Creston made the decision to proceed with electronic voting machines in the recent municipal election. Experience with different types of these machines has proven that they are easily hacked or manipulated to achieve a desired result. It is particularly egregious to hear the reasoning for this decision as being the speeding up of election results. Is anyone prepared to sacrifice the observability and verifiability of the voting process in a democracy for the sake of a few hours? Does anyone think that technology is always a better way to go, or indicates progress in some way just because it is new? If you feel that way, I suggest you watch the HBO documentary, Hacking Democracy, on Vimeo, (vimeo.com/2058220) or order the DVD from Amazon. I hope that all council members will revisit this decision, and give it some sober second thought. Linda D. Morris Lakeview

Update on three Creston Mountain trails
Last week, we took a walk on the Balancing Rock, Creston Mountain and Fern Forest trails to gather some additional details on them and on
their surroundings. These trails come together at a swamp and are joined together by a boardwalk that, two years ago, was in pretty bad shape. I discovered, to my delight, that the boardwalk upgrade was completed with new planks and steel mesh to reduce the slippery conditions on it when wet. Thanks to the Rotarians and for this improveMcMackin friends ment and repair completed in August.

Access over the swamp, provided by the boardwalk, offers an experience not available on any of the other popular trails easily accessed from Creston. Skunk cabbage plants with their bright yellow spathes, lady ferns with their six-foot fronds and devil’s club, with that “don’t touch me” look are, in season, easily viewed close at hand from the boardwalk. The predominate graceful lady ferns give one the experience of being in a verdant southern everglade, minus, of course, the crocodiles, or is it alligators? The swamp and the boardwalk may be accessed over two trails: the Balancing Rock Trail and the Fern Forest Trail. Both provide moderate hiking access to the Creston Mountain Trail that continues up the lower slopes of Creston Mountain to a prominent viewpoint above the Wildlife Interpretation Centre. (The following distances are approximate and the times variable depending on hiking speed.) The Balancing Rock Trail takes off to the right, west of West Creston Road at a pullout just a few hundred meters south of Highway 3, 10 kilometres west of the Highway 3/3A junction on the north side of Creston. The “balancing rock”, a glacial erratic, a predominate feature of this trail, is 1.4 kilometres (0.86 miles) in trail distance from the trailhead. Elevation gain is about 860 feet. The trail reaches the swamp in 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles). Shortly before reaching the balancing rock, there is a bench under a pine tree and just a few feet beyond, the trail makes an easily missed hard right to the north. Hiking time to the rock would be, more or less, a halfhour, and to the swamp about 45 minutes. At the bench one gets a panoramic view of the marshes, the winding Kootenay River and communities of Wynndel and Creston far to the east. Shortly beyond the rock, keep left. The Fern Forest Trail takes off from the south side of the Highway 3 bridge over Summit Creek 11 kilometres west of Creston and about one kilometre west of West Creston Road. Trail users need to park at the pullout just east of the bridge and walk to the trailhead on the south side of the bridge. Elevation gain is about 860 feet, the length is about 1.6 kilometres (one mile) and time is 45 minutes. After ascending through a dense evergreen forest to the height of land, the trail passes through an open forest of coniferous and deciduous trees, crosses an old road and then descends somewhat to follow along the swamp until it reaches the boardwalk and junction with the Balancing Rock and Creston Mountain trails. The swamp-side portion can be a bit soggy in early summer. At the registry box, a short distance up the trail, the Trans Canada Trail branches downward to the right and continues west for several kilometres above and along the south side of Summit Creek, crossing a logging road and continuing through a damp coastlike forest with huge moss-cov-

ered boulders, rock walls and cascading streams. The hike up Creston Mountain to the rock overlook, starting from the Balancing Rock trailhead at West Creston Road and continuing on the Creston Mountain Trail, for the average hiker would be rated as a twohour hike. The overall distance is about 0.4 kilomtetres (0.23 miles) and elevation gain is around 2,100 feet at about 3,900 feet elevation above sea level. From the overlook, just past the “End of Trail” sign, this elevation of nearly 4,000 feet gives a fantastic view of the Kootenay River valley. Far below, one can pick out the red roof of the Wildlife Interpretation Centre and the mosaic patterns in the ponds and marshes and farmer’s fields. In spring, the valley is carpeted in verdant green but the view is fantastic any time of year. The Creston Mountain Trail reaches the top after several series of switchbacks spread out along its route. Some of the trail is quite steep and passes near some cliffs and steep inclines, requiring strict vigilance of trail conditions, location and hiker discretion. After reaching the first overlook, the route heads shortly into a birch grove, which in summer provides dappled shade that extends about 1,000 feet along the mountain slope. From one of the overlooks, in spring, one can view a mass of white flowers in the tops of Virginia cherry trees. Further along, the trail enters a shallow ravine where in spring and early summer a small brook descends the trail a short distance before it flows down the slope. This watercourse is an indication that the junction to the Holly Falls Trail is coming up in about 15 minutes. The Holly Falls Trail takes off to the right on a bit of a
level stretch. On the left, high on a large evergreen tree, is a white sign indicating “The Falls”. Just beyond this junction, the Creston Mountain Trail passes by another overlook at the top of a cliff. The Holly Falls Trail, approximately 200 meters in length, enters a rocky alcove where a stream splashes off the rock above, dropping about 30 metres. The rocks are covered with rich damp moss and are very slippery. One may find the area by the falls even too cool on a summer’s day. In winter, the falls is often a frozen column, draped with long icicles. In summer, the falls may dry up and not run again until there are some good rainfalls. Holly Falls has been named after a plant growing in the area. The Creston Mountain Trail ends at a rocky lookout with a captivating view of the Kootenay River valley, the marshes, farmland and the communities of Wynndel and Creston. To those of you for whom hiking is a new thing and, actually, to all hikers, I would say you will find that these trails, like most others, are not like city sidewalks. And the weather may be a bit more severe than what you are used to. Some of the trails may have water running down them and from late fall through spring this may have frozen and made the trail, in spots, very slippery. So, wherever or whenever you hike or walk, be sure to go equipped with extra jacket, gloves and even ice grips, and, of course, nourishing food and water. Trail conditions can change dramatically, and you are responsible for your own safety and comfort! Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. PCSS boys second in zone SUBMITTED
The Prince Charles Secondary School seniors boys volleyball team hosted the Kootenay Zone championships on Nov. 14, a qualifier for the B.C. provincial championships. The round robin playoff included Kimberley, Invermere and Creston, with Kimberley ultimately winning. In the first match, Creston came out flat against Kimberley and lost in two sets. Creston was nervous and struggled with their passing. Kimberley took advantage of the free balls and hit a lot of good attack spikes. In the second match, Creston again started slow against Invermere and lost the first set. Creston was hitting their marks and had gained momentum by the end of the set. They served strong and their attack spikes started to hit the floor. In the second set, Creston’s serving was very strong and their spikes were hit with authority. Invermere was no match for the surging Creston team, which took the second set with ease. The Creston boys took charge in the third and final set, defeating Invermere and solidifying a place in the finals against Kimberley.

The Prince Charles Secondary School senior boys volleyball team, from left: (back row) Coach Rick Czar, Jordin Czar, Braeden Holland, Jamond Dortman, Mitchell Bell, Abdual Samai, coach Len McCord; (front row) Zach Tomich, Darien Bergman, Donovan Osterreicher, Andrew Armstrong.
In the best-of-five final, both teams struggled to get their legs under them but the score stayed close throughout the set. Kimberley had some key hits in the end and took the first set 25-23. Creston came out very strong in the second set, spiking the ball well and digging up just about every ball thrown their way. Creston took the second set handily 25-18. The third set saw a seesaw battle again.
Creston again dominated the hitting game, but Kimberley started to dig up some of the attacks and took the third set 25-20. Kimberley took control of the fourth and final set early with great serving, and although Creston started to come back in the middle of the set with great hits and digs off the floor, Kimberley again put a string of serves together and took the final set 25-17, and the match 3-1.

PCSS boys earn silver medals
Bowling
SUBMITTED
The Prince Charles Secondary School junior boys have renewed a heated rivalry with Jaffray junior high in the 2014 volleyball season. The Bulldogs beat the Rebels 2-1 in a typically tense three-set final at the Mount Baker invitational tournament Nov. 1 in Cranbrook. The Creston team had beaten all comers in the matches leading up to the final with the exception of a 2-0 round-robin loss to Jaffray. PCSS swept Selkirk of Kimberley, David Thompson of Invermere, Parkland of Cranbrook and the host team, setting up their shot at revenge against the Rebels in the final. Jaffray and PCSS hooked up again two weeks later in the championship match of a tournament hosted by the Selkirk Storm in Kimberley, with the Rebels prevailing in that one. The Bulldogs didn’t return home empty-handed, however, receiving silver medals for their efforts.

Local emergency services (police, fire and ambulance) have concerns that many rural properties cannot be located by street number in an emergency, especially at night and in bad weather. The Regional District of Central Kootenay urges all property owners to identify their homes by a visible number at the entrance to their driveway. (Bylaw RDC-2391 Civic Addressing Bylaw)
For your safety, we offer two-sided reflective green street number signs for a cost of $20 (tax included). A portion of this fee will be passed on to our local community association to fund their hall.

A new gate at the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area protects the dike section that was gravelled and graded in the spring.
Barb Houston
This year was a good one for the Creston Valley’s northern leopard frogs.
Breeding helping to maintain leopard frog populations FISH AND WILDLIFE COMPENSATION PROGRAM
The spring and summer of 2014 have been very good for endangered northern leopard frogs in the Creston Valley and East Kootenay. For a second year in a row, captive breeding at Vancouver Aquarium was successful (allowing for the second release of tadpoles in the Columbia marshes following the first release in 2013), breeding was confirmed at two ponds at the upper Kootenay reintroduction site, and to top off the positive news, the number of northern leopard frog egg masses detected in the Creston Valley was the highest since records began in 1997. “It has certainly been a very rewarding year for members of the northern leopard frog recovery team,” says Dr. Purnima Govindarajulu, chair of the recovery team, and small mammal and herpetofauna specialist with the B.C. Ministry of Environment. “Collectively, we feel we are making significant strides forward in ensuring that the northern leopard frogs will remain part of the B.C. landscape for generations to come.” A total of 39 egg masses were found in the Creston Valley by biologists funded by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) — almost double that of the previous record count of 22 in 2012. Finding so many egg masses bolsters the recovery effort for one of the most at-risk amphibians in the province. The reintroduction of northern leopard frogs to the East Kootenay has hinged on finding and protecting a sufficient number of egg masses in the Creston Valley. “This year’s record-breaking find of egg masses is related to the relatively high number of egg masses in 2011 and 2012, as those eggs have turned into frogs that are now of breeding age,” says wildlife biologist
Barb Houston, who manages the northern leopard frog project for the FWCP. “The population in the Creston Valley is likely increasing due to a combination of factors, including efforts to protect egg masses from predators with mesh cages, changing land management practices with the support of land owners and possibly because the frogs now have a higher resistance to the fungal disease chytridiomycosis.” Over the last four years, about 30,000 tadpoles have been moved from the Creston Valley to Bummers Flats north of Cranbrook. Surveying, funded by Columbia Basin Trust and the Aboriginal Fund for Species at Risk through the Ktunaxa Nation, found evidence that breeding has been successful at Bummers Flats. The high number of egg masses found in the Creston Valley has also allowed the FWCP to supply tadpoles to the Vancouver Aquarium to support their captive assurance colony. This colony is an insurance policy of sorts, where the tadpoles have been reared and bred in captivity, with the progeny used to support endangered northern leopard frog recovery efforts in the Columbia marshes. In the 1970s, populations of northern leopard frogs across Western Canada declined sharply, especially in B.C., and the Rocky Mountain population is listed as endangered by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). The species is also on the provincial red list. “While the population remains extremely fragile in the province, the record number of egg masses found, together with the successful reintroduction results in the East Kootenay, certainly allow us some cautious optimism for the northern leopard frog,” added Govindarajulu. “We look forward to making similar progress in 2015.”
Gate keeping CVWMA dike in good shape
CRESTON VALLEY WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY
Approximately three kilometres of dike along the south end of Duck Lake off Channel Road within the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area (CVWMA) was gravelled and graded in the spring. It took 2,800 cubic yards of gravel, or 280 regular dump truck loads, to repair the damaged section of this provincial flood protection dike at a cost of $60,000. To ensure the dike remains in good condition for years to come, the CVWMA has installed a gate at the southeast
corner of Duck Lake that will be used for seasonal closures to vehicle traffic during periods of unfavourable weather and dike conditions. The most effective way of preventing damage to the dike is to limit vehicle access when the dike is saturated with water and during freeze and thaw periods. Closures at these times will be temporary and also depend on the conditions of the dikes south and west of Duck Lake. Closures will apply to vehicles only; pedestrians will be welcome to continue using the dike. Duck Lake is a unique and special place. These are the only dikes within the CVWMA
where vehicle access is allowed and it is frequented by a wide range of users for recreational opportunities such as hiking, bird watching, fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing. The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Authority asks that everyone respect the area by keeping dogs on a leash and packing out garbage. It would also like to remind people that ATVs, dirt bikes and snowmobiles are prohibited within the CVWMA boundary, unless a permit is issued. If you have any questions or comments, please contact the CVWMA at 250-402-6900 or askus@crestonwildlife.ca.
