Places

Fifty shades of Gray (Creek) Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Seventy-eighth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Gray Creek, on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, is one of the more puzzling local place names, with several theories about its origin. Here’s what we know: Perry’s Mining Map of 1893 labelled the settlement Grays. The spot also shows up as Ironton on an early preemption map, presumably after iron deposits in the area, although that name didn’t gain much traction. For many years, the community was known interchangeably as Grays Creek, Gray’s Creek, Gray Creek, and (probably erroneously) Grey’s Creek. Grays Creek was officially adopted in 1903, based on an 1898 CPR map, and wasn’t changed to Gray Creek until 1947. However, the post office opened in 1908 as Gray Creek. The first newspaper mention of Gray’s Creek is in The Ledge of June 3, 1897: “Some very rich strikes are reported on Crawford creek. Samples of large cube galena were brought in last week … from a find lately made on the divide between Gray’s Creek and Le France [sic]

creek, supposed to be a continuation of the great Gordon Dyke discovered by Jack Redding in July ’95 …” Another early mention appeared in the Nelson Tribune on March 3, 1899: “John P. Redding of Kaslo has transferred … an undivided one-eighth interest in each of the mineral claims Gold Reef, about two miles from Crawford Bay on Gray’s creek, and the Gordon, about five miles from the same bay.” Redding’s name in these examples is significant, as we’ll later see. The first use of Gray Creek without the apostrophe is in the Tribune of September 23, 1899, in a legal ad for timber rights taken out by Harry Houston: “Commencing at a post about two and a half miles up from the mouth of a creek running into Crawford Bay on Kootenay lake, and known as Gray creek …” The creek itself first appeared on J.W. Trutch’s 1871 map of BC, but without a name. On Perry’s 1893 map, it’s called Baker Creek, a name subsequently given to another stream east of the Gray Creek Pass. According to an unpublished history of the area by Kathleen Lymbery, an 1895 map called it Louise Creek, although it’s not clear

which map she was referring to. Croasdaile Creek, named for landowner/developer Henry Croasdaile (18461915), is said to have been known as Gray Creek before the name was given to the much larger neighbouring stream. Frances Roback of the Gray Creek Historical Society notes: “Gray Creek appears named on maps while other creeks here often weren’t. Gray Creek often was the only named creek between Crawford Creek and LaFrance Creek. It’s reasonable to suppose that as Gray Creek was a major part of the East-West Kootenay route across the divide historically, mapmakers would be more likely to name the creek.” So who was it named after? Folklore suggests an old prospector named Grey, who was related to novelist Zane Grey. Another guess is civil engineer and land surveyor John Hamilton Gray (18531941), whose father was among the Fathers of Confederation. By March 1892, Gray was in partnership with Montagu Davys and Charles E. Perry (who created the above-mentioned map) in a surveying, real estate, and mine brokerage business with offices in Victoria and Nelson.

Reminding you to Recycle!

What are YOU saving for?

Tom Lymbery created this welcome sign. This is the side seen heading north on Highway 3A. The other side declares Gray Creek a metricfree zone. Photo by Greg Nesteroff

Gray was later chief engineer of the Kaslo and Slocan Railway. In early 1898, he and the railway’s president visited the future site of Kuskonook and decided to survey a townsite. Nothing, however, ties him

specifically to Gray Creek. There is another, stronger candidate for the namesake: Aulden S. Gray. More on him next week. — Thanks to Frances Roback and Tom and Sharon Lymbery.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS

PETS on PARADE COLD WEATHER AND YOUR PETS THIS WINTER The Trail Regional BCSPCA would like to discuss pets and cold weather this month. “Cold weather conditions can pose a serious risk to your pet,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA. “Extra caution should be taken to ensure that your pet stays warm, safe and healthy this winter.”

below freezing. Ensure your own cat is protected from the elements and be on the look-out for abandoned cats that need shelter, food, water or medical help. “When the winter weather comes, we need to take extra care to ensure that our pets and the animals in our community are safe,” says Chortyk.

Some cold weather safety tips: • Make sure you thoroughly clean the pads of your pet’s paws after they’ve walked on sidewalks or roads to remove any coarse salt that can cause irritation. For your own sidewalk, choose a pet-friendly, non-corrosive de-icing compound readily available through retail outlets; • Use pet-safe propylene-based antifreeze instead of ethylene glycol antifreeze, which is toxic to pets and wildlife. A mere tablespoon of ethylene glycol antifreeze can kill a cat or small dog; • “Think and Thump” before starting your car. Cats and wildlife gravitate to warm engines during cold weather. Banging on the hood before getting into your car can avoid a tragic ending for an animal seeking refuge from the cold; • The SPCA is vehemently opposed to keeping pets permanently outdoors and strongly urges pet guardians to keep animals inside during cold weather. However, if domestic or farm animals are kept outside, ensure they have access to shelter that is off the ground, provides protection from wind, cold and dampness and is properly insulated. Regular checks to ensure drinking water has not frozen over are also a must; • Sadly, every community has many abandoned and free-roaming cats that are forced to fend for themselves. The struggle for survival becomes even more desperate when temperatures drop

Elections

Number of women elected in West Kootenay holds steady Greg Nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

The number of women elected to local office in West Kootenay/Boundary this month was about the same as three years ago, but several firsts were established. Overall, 62 women were voted in as mayors, councillors, regional directors and school trustees (45.6 per cent of the total) compared to 64 in 2011. Nearly 73 per cent of women who ran for office this time were elected, compared to 68 per cent last time. Seven of 16 municipalities will have female mayors — breaking the previous record of six set in 2011 — while 30 women will serve on councils, down from 32 in the previous election. Women will form a majority on six municipal councils, the same number as before. A woman was chosen as mayor in seven of the eight communities where one ran. Nelson elected Deb Kozak as its first female mayor, leaving Trail and Warfield as the only places that have never had a woman serve as mayor. However, there were encouraging signs on both of those fronts: for the first time, three women were elected to Trail council — Lisa Pasin, Carol Dobie, and incumbent Eleanor Gattafoni Robinson — and for the second time, a woman topped the polls (Pasin). Only one woman — Dianne Langman — ran in Warfield, but she also finished at the top. Rossland elected its second female mayor in Kathy

Moore, although she will be the lone female on council, as fellow mayoral challenger Jill Spearn was the only other woman in the race. Rossland’s loss of three women from council will be the highest drop of any local municipality. On the flip side, Grand Forks saw the greatest increase, going from one woman in 2011 to four in 2014. New Denver mayor Ann Bunka and Fruitvale mayor Patricia Cecchini were both returned by acclamation, while Nakusp mayor Karen Hamling was re-elected. During the next term, Hamling will become the village’s longest serving mayor, beating former mayor Rosemarie Johnson’s record of 12 years. Meanwhile, Kaslo elected its second woman mayor in longtime councillor Suzan Hewat and Slocan elected its fourth in Jessica Lunn, who narrowly defeated fellow incumbent councillor Hillary Elliott. For the last two terms, Slocan has had an all-female council. That streak has been broken, but women will still hold a majority of seats. The greatest number of elected women are in Nelson and Grand Forks, with four each, while the fewest are in Midway, Rossland, Salmo, and Warfield, with one each. While it took Nelson 96 years to elect a woman as mayor after they became eligible to run, women have formed a majority on council since 2008. Seven women secured seats as regional district directors this time, up from five in 2011, while 18 were elected school trustees, down from 21.

Summer is the season when property owners notice bats in their buildings. They may find guano on the deck, hear bats in the walls, or smell a build-up of guano. The Kootenay Community Bat Project, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund, has received hundreds of calls over the years with these issues. In many cases, landowners are happy to leave bats where they are. However, for landowners who would like to have bats move out of their buildings, now is the time to do something about it. “With the decline of natural roost structures in the wild, such as large trees or undisturbed rock crevices, some bat species have adapted to use buildings for their roost sites” says Juliet Craig, Coordinating Biologist for the bat project. “Groups of related females can form large colonies called maternity roosts where they get together to have their one pup. These colonies may use attics, walls, chimneys, siding, barns, sheds and other structures.” Under the BC Wildlife Act it is illegal to exterminate or harm bats. In order to get rid of bats, the best strategy is to wait until they have left the building and seal up all the entry and exit points. continued on page A9

However, in summer months, bat pups can become trapped inside. In general, bats in the Kootenays leave buildings in the late summer or early fall. They use fall roost sites where they mate and then go into mines or caves to hibernate. Although there is a possibility that bats can use buildings over the winter, it is unusual. “There are several approaches to managing bats in buildings” continues Craig. Some landowners don’t mind having bats and simply leave them be or clean up the guano once a year. Others want to ensure that the bats are no longer using the building. In those

cases, this is the time of year to check that bats are no longer inside the roost and then work on sealing up all entry and exit points.” One of the most important strategies in excluding bats from a building is to install a bat-house nearby. These wooden boxes comprised of various chambers provide the bats with an alternative habitat. They are less likely to be persistent in entering their old roost site in a building if they have somewhere else to roost. To find out more about how to do a bat eviction, bat-house plans, or bat biology, visit kootenaybats.com and download the Frequently Asked Questions booklet. Or call 1-855-9BC-BATS ext. 14.

Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada. Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts. In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager. Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland • 3.6L V6 PentaStar Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Cayenne goes back to the future

By Zack Spencer

In 2003, Porsche Cars North America shipped a number of its shiny, new, Porsche Cayenne SUVs from head office in Atlanta to drive the Sea to Sky highway here in BC. The day started with a long explanation as to why the famed sports car maker was getting into the SUV game. History often repeats and here again in 2014, Porsche shipped roughly fifty new Cayenne S and SE Hybrids to the same scenic highway. This time around there was no explanation as to why this second-generation model exists: the Cayenne currently accounts for roughly fifty present of all Porsche sales. Looks When the second generation Cayenne came out in 2011 it was a departure from the previous model. As head of design for the current Cayenne, Ingo Scheinhuette, told me: “Even though the new model was larger than the original, many people thought it looked smaller.” In an effort to make the new 2015 facelift look more masculine, the goal was to make the Cayenne look more planted and wider. To do this, the entire front end, including

the front bumper, grille, headlights, and front fenders have a more polished look. The daytime running lights have four LED marker lights that are also mimicked in the tail lamps, plus bi-xenon lamps are now standard. The front air intakes are wider and the hood looks more integrated into the design. Around the back, the rear window spoiler, hatch, bumper and exhaust tips are all new. The lights are more sculpted, the bumper has been raised and widened and the exhaust tips now pop through the lower valance. If the goal was to make the Cayenne more masculine, mission accomplished. Inside What hasn’t changed, thankfully, is the interior. Three minor changes include a three-point sports steering wheel as standard equipment across the entire Cayenne line that includes paddle shifters and heat. The other changes include standard navigation and a slightly more sculpted rear seat. The rest of the interior is pure automotive perfection. The level of fit and finish has yet to be surpassed in this class and the logical multi-button layout looks intimidating at first but is easy to master after

a few days. What Porsche has done in the industry is move the needle on what

Zack Spencer

is expected in premium products. In many ways, the competition looks frumpy and rather dated, even after four years on the market, the Cayenne is still fresh. Drive With pressure on automakers to improve fuel economy and lower their carbon footprint, this latest 2015 Cayenne receives two new S models. The base S used to be fitted with a V8 engine, now a smaller 3.6L V6 with two turbocharges helps to produce an extra 20hp but saves fuel. This

is the same engine that is used in the smaller Porsche Macan Turbo. Accelerating up through the mountains was a snap but the sound from the engine and interior vibration isn’t as smooth as the old V8. The second new drive system is the plug-in SE-Hybrid that can run on pure electric power up to 30kms before the supercharged Audi-derived 3.0L gasoline V6 kicks in. This model can run on the 95hp electric motor alone, for greatest efficiency, or the electric motor can be used for additional punch for spirited moves. The combined output is 416hp and 435 lb.-ft. of torque. This is the very first plug-in hybrid in this class of vehicle. Last year the Porsche Panamera sedan came equipped with this system and accounted for roughly 11 percent of overall sales but that was a rear wheel drive only car, this Cayenne is all wheel drive, which should appeal to more buyers. Verdict The greatest challenge for the SE-Hybrid is the already practical and thrifty diesel Cayenne that delivers nearly as much torque and fantastic economy. Nothing can compete with pure electric driving for carbon reduction but it comes at

a cost. The SE-Hybrid starts at $86,800 and the Diesel starts at $71,330, which leaves a ton of extra cash left over for those costly Porsche options. The new turbo V6 equipped Cayenne S now starts at $83,700, which poses a problem for buyers of the $82,200 Macan Turbo. Both start at roughly the same price but the Cayenne comes with boatloads more interior space, 20 more horsepower and the same Porsche crest on the hood. The smart money is on the Cayenne over the rather cramped Macan, there is actually room for the family dog in the back. More than ten years have passed since the first Sea to Sky highway Cayenne introduction and it is still the handling and performance mid-size champ. Now with more features, a sumptuous cabin and efficient power to spare. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca The Lowdown Power: 3.6L turbo V6 with 420hp or 416hp hybrid. Fill-up: Hybrid can run up to 30km on pure electric power. Sticker price: $33,700-$86,800

News / Places Young pianists honour Canada Music Week SHERI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser

Most Canadians have probably heard at least one Leonard Cohen song over the years. But what about compositions by Violet Archer, Linda Niamath or Clifford Poole? They might not be household names, but they are well known and well played Canadian composers in the conservatory world of music. Their contributions along with a plethora of the country’s music writers were honoured from coast to coast this week in Canada Music Week recitals. Twenty-two young pianists from Castlegar to Rossland through Trail and the Beaver Valley gathered in the Muriel Griffiths on Nov. 17 to tickle the ivories and fill the room with the sound of home grown compositions. Following performances from the upand-coming pianists, ages six to 16, a trio of local teachers from the Trail/Castlegar Branch of BC Registered Mu-

sic Teachers Association handed out yearly awards and scholarships for grade levels one through 10. The s t u d e nt s were recognized for achievements in classical, contemporary idioms, theory and basic rudiments from the Canada Conservatory and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Castlegar teen Caleb Kavaloff was on hand to receive a number of awards including a certificate for achieving Level 5 Conservatory Canada certification as well as First Class Honours in Theory 1 and a special mention with a bronze medal for the highest mark in BC for Basic Rudiments. After nine years of studying piano, Kavaloff, dedicates five hours each week to practising the instrument. He plans to continue his musical journey indefinitely because the 13-year old said it’s one of his favourite hobbies and a good skill to have later in life. Keeping with the nationally recognized music week, the Trail/ Castlegar Branch of

music teachers maintain their dedication to educational, cultural and artistic development of their students. Anyone looking for a qualified teacher can visit www.bcrmta. bc.ca and click on the link for the organization’s history, a list of events and the instructors’ contact information. Canada Music Week began decades ago by Greater Trail’s Helen Dahlstrom, a registered piano teacher who taught countless youth how to play the keyboard and the theory behind the music. Dahlstrom built up the event from her home in Rossland, chairing the celebration from 1970 to 1992. She started a national music-writing contest and created Canada Music Week Magazine before making the week’s activities better know to members of the Canadian Federation of Registered Teachers Associations and to the music world at large. After a long and well-lived life, she passed away in July 2013 at the age of 96.
