Two dead in three-vehicle collision south of Eckville STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A three-vehicle collision on Hwy 766 south of Eckville resulted in the deaths of two people last Friday. Sylvan Lake RCMP were called to a multivehicle collision at 5:25 p.m., and arrived to find three vehicles involved. A Chevrolet pickup truck heading south crossed the centre line and collided head-on with a Nissan Armada SUV heading north. A north-bound Ford van collided with the Chevrolet following the first collision. Upon their arrival, emergency services found two people dead: a 30-year-old woman from the Condor area, and a 46-year-old Benalto man. The man had been driving the truck, while the woman had been driving the SUV. A passenger in the SUV — a 56-year-old Rocky Mountain House woman — was removed from the vehicle and taken to hospital in Red Deer

with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the male driver of the truck wasn’t wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, and was ejected from his vehicle. The female SUV driver was wearing a seatbelt, but died from fatal injuries suffered in the incident. None of the Ford van’s occupants were injured. The incident occurred two kilometres south of Eckville on the Medicine River crossing bridge deck near Township Road 39-2. A traffic collision re-constructionist was on scene following the collision, which resulted in the road being closed for more than four hours. Police say roads and weather were not to blame for the collision. Alcohol, they believe, may have been a factor. Names of the deceased and injured aren’t being released.

Seniors discuss housing, social issues at forum STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A forum to discuss seniors housing and social issues in Sylvan Lake saw strong participation with about 35 seniors in attendance last Wednesday. Participants broke into groups, and were joined by members of the Sylvan Lake Seniors Advisory Committee, to provide their thoughts on everything from resources available to seniors in Sylvan Lake to ideal living conditions. The purpose of the forum was to gather feedback to be compiled into a report that will be distributed publicly among seniors groups and organizations around town. Brittney Buehler, FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) seniors services co-ordinator and member of the advisory committee, said the forum proved hugely successful in that regard. “It was a great turnout,” she said. “It was interesting to see their point of view.” The idea came for the meeting resulted from a Sylvan Lake Lodge Foundation board retreat, where it was determined certain questions would need to be answered to assist with future planning. Those questions were posed to the groups of seniors at last Wednesday’s forum, and produced useful feedback, according to Buehler.
“Everybody was sharing lots of great ideas,” she said. Participants were asked what seniors services they were aware of in Sylvan Lake, what seniors services they would like to see in Sylvan Lake, and what type of housing they think the town needs. “We wanted to hear what the seniors in Sylvan Lake had to say about housing and to see their awareness of different services that are available to them in Sylvan Lake,” said Buehler. Responses were recorded, and will be integrated into the report, she added. Increased recreational opportunities, providing more care for caregivers and having single-floor housing with the absence of stairs were among them. Being close to shopping and transit were also important considerations for many in attendance, said Buehler. Overall feedback provided throughout the evening was positive, she added. “There were a lot of responses saying we don’t need to leave Sylvan Lake for anything, so that was good,” she said. Future changes will make the town even more accommodating for seniors, she feels. “With the Seniors Centre going into the Multiplex (NexSource Centre), next year and the year after will bring great changes for Sylvan Lake, and I think a lot of seniors will be even happier.”

A week after relocating to Sylvan Lake and starting my job as a reporter, I made the bold decision to go ahead and delete my Facebook account. I did this for several reasons — some of which included being tired of looking at the endless advertisements cluttering up my News Feed and wanting some privacy from prying eyes. tion, as well as others highlighting family events. I felt successful in doing this, but realized that the only way to truly preserve a photo is to actually print it out. Out of curiosity, I clicked through the many conversations that I had been a part of. This took me down memory lane to the person I was 10 years ago. Re-reading those conversations led me to feel embarrassed, immature and clueless, among an array of other things. I stumbled upon a conversation I had with an ex-boyfriend, and with his profile still attached, much to my surprise he had actually gotten mar-
ried. This surprised me as the topic of marriage came up once when I was with him and I still remember how awkwardly he reacted. Let me just say I wish his wife the best of luck in being married to him. Deleting my Facebook account proved to be a good move as I didn’t realize how much of a distraction and how disruptive it was. There are many good things with Facebook — it enables you to find and keep in contact with your long lost friends. But for me it was time to say goodbye. I’ll admit I felt a bit alone after deleting my account and then delet-
ing the link on my laptop and iPhone. But deleting my account allowed me to broaden my horizons to interacting with people face to face in the real world ... again. I honestly don’t miss being within the virtual world, but what I do miss is my friends from university, who I would converse with in person at school. Facebook is what it is, you just have to decide whether you want to converse with people face to face or within an online virtual world. Just remember, you might not be getting as much privacy as you think.
Scouts need help funding trips of a lifetime Dear Editor, We are pleased to introduce two local Scouts/Venturers who are going on a couple of journeys of a lifetime. Our Scout will be attending Pacific Jamboree (PJ) in Sooke, B.C., while the Venturer is going across the world to World Jamboree (WJ) in Yamaguchi, Japan. PJ will be a week-long camp sleeping in tents dealing with all sorts of weather and adventures creating some awesome memories to share for a lifetime. The camp will capacitate approximately 5,000 youth and leaders from all over Canada, taking on lots of badge trading and adventures that some youth will not have ever done before, meeting new friends near and far and making friendships of a lifetime. Here is a little bit about AJ Sandulac: He has been involved in the Scouting organization for six years, starting out in Beavers, and working through the Cubs program. He’s now in his first year as a Scout. AJ received a Certificate for Meritorious Conduct for saving his mom’s life at home when he was only eight years of age. He will be working towards his Chief Scout Award in three years as well. The one attending WJ will be gone for three weeks to a country that we can only talk about as amazing! She will spend four days in Hong Kong where they will do some sightseeing and accustoming themselves to the climate changes and life in another country. From there they will fly to Yamaguchi, Japan to stay in tents with upwards of 30,000 other young adults and leaders for 10 days. After the jamboree is completed, they will go to a host family for three days and do some more sightseeing
and learning about the culture and traits. What an experience she will come home with. Jocelyn Mosset has been involved in the Scouting organization for ten years, and has achieved many goals and achievements. To name a couple, she has received the Medal of Maple for excellence in volunteering to the community, scouting and schools. Jocelyn also received her Chief Scout Award, which is the highest award you can obtain in Scouts. Currently, Jocelyn is working toward receiving her Queen Venturer and Duke of Edinburgh Awards in two years. She recently received the Council Commissioner Good Service to Scouting Award. These two have been working hard at raising the funds to send themselves to these camps and could use some extra help from the locals of Sylvan Lake. They will be doing bottle drives in the evenings or on a weekend trying to raise some additional funds. They are also looking for any donations of any denominations to help offset the costs to go to these camps. The PJ camp is approximately $2,000, while the WJ camp is $6,200. If you would like to donate bottles or cash, they would be forever grateful. Contacts are as follows: Cinzia Cappella - 780-718-2818 (AJ Sandulac); Deanne Mosset - 403 350-6848 (Jocelyn Mosset). Thank you in advance for any help you would like to offer to these youth! Cinzia Cappella and Deanne Mosset, Sylvan Lake
Paying the price for someone else’s actions Dear Editor, Recently there has been a change in the dress code at a Sylvan Lake school stating that girls are no longer permitted to wear any sort of tight pants, including skinny jeans, unless they have on a long shirt. This new rule is due to the misbehaviour of a boy who took a picture of a girl’s backside and posted it on the internet. Now girls are being punished for something one boy did. In my opinion, this is an unfair way to solve a problem that could have been solved in other ways. All the time, I hear people say
things like “boys will be boys,” or “it’s her own fault,” and it just isn’t fair to the female population. I myself have been told to be careful of boys because they only want to be with you for your body. Why should we, as women, have to be careful and be the ones to look out, when, really, boys should be taught why it’s wrong to mistreat a girl and the consequences of their actions? I seriously hope that people take this into consideration and our society has a turn for the better. Sophie Brooks, Sylvan Lake

Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Kerry Towle said her decision earlier this week to leave the Wildrose Party and join the Progressive Conservative government wasn’t an easy one, but it was one she felt needed to be made. “I just felt that some of the decisions being made were taking our party in a way that was not in line with what my constituents elected me to do,” she said, speaking at a news conference in Edmonton on Monday. “I felt that I had done all that I could in the role that I was in.” Towle admitted the decision was one of the hardest she’s ever had to make, and made it only after extensive conversations with constituents and family members. “My constituents were coming to me asking me to give this government and Mr. Prentice a chance, and felt that I could do more with them than against them,” she said. “I’ve listened to them (constituents), and I’ve made the decision, but it was incredibly difficult.” Little Bow MLA Ian Donovan also made the switch, and with Towle, was welcomed by Premier Jim Prentice on Monday. Both, Prentice said, are individuals he’s “admired from a distance.”

Dress lending program to help ease grad financial burden STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A new program at HJ Cody School is aiming to ease the financial burden of graduating high school by providing graduation and prom dresses to students in need. But organizers need the community’s help, and are asking for donations of gently-used prom dresses within one or two years old. The more dresses received, the wider range of students the program is able to help, said HJ Cody career assistant Mandi Hyatt, who created the program. “We’re hoping that we can possibly just have a selection here at the school to be able to help students who for some reason can’t afford one,” she said. “I just want all students to have the same positive experience, and to feel included and supported. This is one way that we could help do that.” Hyatt said girls spend upwards of $500 on dresses for the occasion. That’s a figure she feels not all students and parents can or should have to spend. “(Costs are) just kind of growing and growing,” she said. “If you can cut them back, cut them back, and we just thought that hopefully for those students that can’t keep up to that, then we would be able to assist.” The program is currently in its formative stages, but Hyatt already has several dresses in the collection. While graduation isn’t until June, she’s hoping donations will begin arriving soon as many girls begin buying grad dresses in January. MONDAY

Others, she said, have already bought theirs. Students who wish to borrow a dress for the occasion will be able to submit a request in private, she added. A similar program has been running successfully in Olds for the past several years, and provided the inspiration for the program at HJ Cody. Hyatt said the school has typically held “one or two” spare dresses for students in previous years, and would be happy if the program supported even just a small amount of students in future years. “If we can help two or three girls a year, that’s amazing for us,” she said. Currently, the program is focusing on providing dresses for girls, though it may expand in the future to encompass tuxedos for boys. The latter are typically rented at a cost around $150, said Hyatt. Those who wish to donate a dress to the program may drop it off at the school or arrange to have it picked up by contacting Hyatt at 403-8872412 or mhyatt@chinooksedge.ab.ca. Monetary donations to the program are also being accepted, and may help fund tuxedo rentals for boys, or hair and makeup for girls. Hyatt stressed that the program — which organizers are calling ‘Belle of the Ball’ — is open to all students, regardless of financial standing. “We’re not going to discriminate,” she said. “If somebody comes to us wanting help and we can help them, then we’re going to help them. “We want them to know we’re here, we care, and we want to make it a memorable day.”

Drivers being reminded of theft preventative measures JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Vehicle theft continues to be a problem throughout the region, with most thefts reported easily preventable, say police. In Lacombe County, many vehicle thefts occur as the result of owners leaving keys inside with doors unlocked, according to Lacombe County senior peace officer Julian Veuger. And it’s not just vehicles that are being stolen: Thieves also target any items of resale value inside. “People are trying to make money and they are out stealing stuff to sell so they can support (drug) habits,” Veuger said. “If there’s something on the seat that’s worth breaking the window and taking, obviously they are going to do that.” Veuger warns people against leaving running vehicles unattended, and encourages people to be aware of potential witnesses to their daily car starting routines. “Even leaving your vehicle running out in front of your house, people watch and they see that,” he said. “If people get into a routine where every morning at 8 a.m. they go out and start their car and let it run for 20 minutes before they go, thieves see and watch that. It’s not uncommon for them to know routines of people.” Simple preventative measures include locking vehicle doors, removing all valuables from sight and avoiding leaving keys in a vehicle, Veuger said. But an open and running vehicle in front of a residence is not the only place of opportunity, he added. Store parking lots can be a gold mine for theft, he said, especially during the Christmas season. Parents leaving their children unattended in a vehicle raises concern as well, and creates not only a thieving opportunity, but also a public safety risk. “Definitely avoid leaving children in a vehicle in the winter time,” Veuger said. “It’s irresponsible as a parent to leave your kids exposed. People stealing vehicles may not care or even see your children in the back seat.” Tinted windows may add further risk to the potential for intentional or unintentional child abduction, he added. “If (thieves) see a door unlocked, they will take off with the vehicle and not necessarily be aware of an infant or children inside.”
Four calls for fire department The following is a list of calls responded to by the Sylvan Lake Fire Department between Nov. 17 and Nov. 24: • Nov. 17 - 4:19 p.m. - Alarm no fire (detector), Jarvis Bay Dr. • Nov. 18 - 12:33 p.m. - Motor vehicle collision, Hwy 20 and Herder Dr. • Nov. 18 - 10:14 p.m. - Structure fire, 45 St. • Nov. 19 - 1:19 p.m. - Motor vehicle collision, Fieldstone Way
JESUS PROMISES THE HOLY SPIRIT John 14:15-17 “Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”
The Holy Spirit loves the truth. He reveals the truth to you. Jesus said if you know the truth, the truth will set you free. Jesus says a true disciple will keep His words and will know the truth and the truth will set them free. ( John 8: 31-32) So the Holy Spirit wants to make you free......by revealing the truth to you...... no more lies and false doctrine......but God Himself teaching you!
SPIRIT
Jesus leaves us the Holy Spirit when He was taken up to heaven. Not many of us knows Him and rather out of ignorance or fear ignore Him. We treat the Holy Spirit just like they treated Jesus before He was crucified. We pay no attention to His Presence or what music He likes. What pleases Him (the Holy Spirit) and makes Him manifest? He feels rejection just like you and me. The Holy Spirit lives in our broken heart, but brokenness is very hard for us. We focus rather on our circumstances that brought the brokenness like the loss of a family member etc. But the Bible says the Holy Spirit lives in a broken heart and is very near such a person. See, not all of us can bear a broken heart, but even that has a purpose. (Isaiah 66:1-2) and (psalm 34:18) It is the resting place of the Most High. WHAT AN HONOR!
So we must make sure that we don’t crucify the Holy Spirit as they did crucify Jesus. We do this by ignoring the Holy Spirit as a person and ignoring Gods presence during worship, or even at home or at work. But take heart, God Almighty made it very easy to receive this great friend - the Holy Spirit. Only believe .........that Jesus Christ died for your sins on the cross. The Holy Spirit wants you to feel His presence, have fun with Him and ......sense what pleases Him to manifest. This great friend is waiting to have fun with Him. He only wants you to belief He exists. Open your heart, humble yourself and receive Him everyday and feel His Presence!! Jesus left us with one big secret........God is Spirit. ( John 4:24) Love His presence daily and make Him feel welcome on earth!! Rudi Niemand Frontline Worship Center, Sylvan Lake

Becoming free to live life the way it’s meant to be lived SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The following story was submitted by the Sylvan Lake Family Violence and Bullying Coalition and Building Bridges sub-committee as part of its month-long campaign to raise awareness of family violence and bullying, and the resources available to help cope with them: Donna’s story: At first, he made a big show of being protective of me — he told me he would always ‘look after’ me. Little did I know that what he really meant was that he wanted to make all the decisions, and I was expected
to go along with it. We had our good times, but once we were married, his desire to control everything became more obvious. He never actually hit me, but his behaviour left me constantly on edge. He would push me, throw things at me, call me names, and humiliate me in front of friends. These episodes would often be followed by him apologizing. He constantly demanded that I prove I loved him. He acted like a loving father to the outside world, but at home he did very little for our daughters. I had to do everything — all the housework, all the care for our kids. Even when I
Be environmentally friendly RECYCLE YOUR PAPER!
was really sick, he refused to do anything to help. But at the same time, he tried to control how I dealt with the kids and how they related to me and each other. He’d sabotage my attempts to create routines and often told the kids to ignore rules I tried to set. For example, if I told the kids it was time for bed, he’d say ‘we don’t need to listen to her, do we?’ Basically my whole life came to revolve around making him happy. At some level, I thought the abuse was my fault — I was inadequate and couldn’t cope well as a mother. I was ashamed to tell anyone. As our daughters got older, I started noticing how his behaviour was affecting them. My eldest shut herself off from everyone and became very withdrawn. Meanwhile, our youngest was copying his behaviour and became demanding and difficult. I began to read books about self-esteem and relationships. They reminded me that I deserved something more than the treatment I was receiving from him. One day, after bursting into tears in front of my doctor, I blurted out what had been going on at home. She was very kind. She spoke about ‘domestic violence’ — I’d never thought that was what I was experiencing. With the support of an agency providing services to victims of domestic violence, I found the strength to leave. It wasn’t easy, and took a lot of planning. I made a couple of attempts to leave, but he would beg and cry and tell me how much he’d
miss me and the kids. I caved in and stayed. But after one horrible incident, in which he pushed me up against the wall and threatened to kill me, I decided I had to get out. I picked the kids up after school and we drove to my sister’s place in another community. There, I rang him and told him I wasn’t coming back. He just exploded. I had to endure his guilt-trips, intimidation, pleading, anger and rage, reminding myself that I deserve something better. The worse he behaved, the clearer it came to me that I had to stick to my decision. With the continued support from my support worker, I was able to focus on the future. I went to court and applied for an emergency protection order to protect me. To see that the judge took his aggressive behaviour seriously made a big difference, and he was forced to back off and stop harassing me. I’ve found a new house and a part-time job. I am slowly rebuilding my relationship with my daughters. We go to counselling together and talk about how we can relate to each other better. It’s taken a while for them to accept my authority as their mother, after years of him getting them to think they can just ignore whatever I say. But nothing will ever be as stressful as the day-by-day stress of living with his demands, moods and criticisms. I am finally living the life that I was meant to live — free from violence, confident and happy. Strong showing from Lynn at Phoenix golf tournament STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
ment in Phoenix marked his last of the year, he’s already got his eye focused on next season. “I like to take the winters off and just kind of work out and get ready for next season,” he said, adding the competition that exists among golfers is one of the things he likes most about the sport. “When you golf competitively, it’s usually the same guys you are playing against. You get to know people quite well.” Throughout his competitive career, Lynn has had plenty of support from family, friends, neighbours and teachers, and he wants them to know he’s grateful. His ‘poppa’ Ken Lynn was present for the tournament in Phoenix. Teachers, including HJ Cody athletics director Jason Chatwood, have been very accommodating with his sporting pursuits, he said, and have offered plenty of helpful advice.
Sylvan Lake’s Jaxon Lynn proved his worth among some of the country’s top junior golfers with a tied fourth-place finish at the 2014 Maple Leaf Junior National Championship in Phoenix, Arizona Nov. 15 and 16. The invitation-only tournament saw Lynn, 17, competing against golfers from all across Canada. He held his own by shooting 72-72 at the two-day tournament at Phoenix’s Legacy Golf Club. “It was good competition, because it was from all across Canada — it wasn’t just Alberta,” he said. “It was a cool experience.” High-calibre tournaments aren’t anything new for Lynn, who’s competed in Calgary, Lethbridge, Banff, Medicine Hat and Niagara Falls, picking up no shortage of wins along the way — one of which arrived at provincials in early October. A member of Team Alberta, he’ll continue hitting balls at an indoor driving range in Calgary throughout the winter, before heading to a tournament in Palm Springs, California in March. Lynn attends HJ Cody School and is a member of the Sylvan Lake Golf and Country DYNAMITE Club. Obituaries NICHOLSON Delores July 11, 1947 to Nov. 19, 2014 It is with loving memories but sad hearts the family of Del Nicholson announces her passing on November 19, 2014 at the young age of 67 years. Del cherished her family and friends with her entire heart. Her strong Carlyle, Saskatchewan roots inspired her love of gardening, cooking and of course the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Del is survived by her husband Jim, daughter Desrae (Trevor), son Derek (Nadine) and grandson Keane. She was a caring and hard-working woman who did everything on her own terms, right up to her last breath. Her spirit will stay alive forever. A Celebration of Life will be held in Del’s honor at the Alliance Community Church, Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Friday, November 28, 2014 at 2:00 PM. Cremation entrusted to the Rocky Mountain Crematorium, Rocky Mountain House. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations in memory of Delores may be made to the Alberta Kids Cancer Care Society or the SPCA. Condolences may be forwarded to: www.sylvanlakefuneral home.ca SYLVAN LAKE AND ROCKY FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATORIUM, your Golden Rule Funeral Homes, entrusted with the arrangements. 403-887-2151. BOTTRELL Robert Ridley (Bob) After a courageous battle with cancer, Bob (Robert) Bottrell died peacefully on November 19, 2014 at the Red Deer Regional Hospital at the age of 66. He leaves behind his sons Damian, Tyler and Kent, grandchildren and their families. Bob was born on March 13, 1948 and grew up in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He worked in the mines near Flin Flon for many years before moving to British Columbia then settling in Central Alberta, where he resided for the past 15 years. Bob will be fondly remembered by his friends in Sylvan Lake. He always wore a smile and his signature welder’s cap which earned him the nickname of ‘Bob the Builder’ in town. He enjoyed working with his hands and would take on many building projects, such as building fences and landscaping. Most recently, Bob worked driving taxi in Sylvan Lake. He enjoyed this job as it allowed him to befriend many people and share his views on life… with those around him. Bob requested to be cremated. His ashes will be interred by his family, at a later date, in the Flin Flon area. The family would like to recognize the strong friendships that Bob built in Sylvan Lake and for the support showed by these friends with his battle.

Sylvan Lake 4-H Multi-Club year underway ANWYN RUBLETZ AND ALIYAH POITRA SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Our Sylvan Lake 4-H Multi-Club held its first meeting and elections on Oct. 6. Our executive for this year includes: President Kalis Currie; Vice-President Jessica Routhier; treasurer Kyah Poitra; secretary Megan Routhier; and club reporters Anwyn Rubletz and Aliyah Poitra. Members also include Courtney Hache and Damien Baylis, and our Cleaver Kids are Austin Routhier, Cole Baylis and Kailen Poitra. The projects that we have chosen to explore this year include crafts and foods. We also have a couple of members interested in a canine project. Next year we are
hoping to find someone who would be interested in helping us offer a small engines project, as we have quite a bit of interest in it. If you know someone who could volunteer for a couple of hours a month, please email Alana Routhier at arouthier@chinooksedge.ab.ca. Our second leader, who is quite wonderful, is Kendall Currie. We are so fortunate to have her commitment and enthusiasm. If anyone else is interested in getting involved, please contact us as soon as possible. We meet Mondays at 6:30 p.m. (first Monday – business meeting, third Monday – crafts project, and fourth Monday – foods project). We are done by 8 p.m. and usually enjoy a snack.
At our second meeting on Nov. 3, we were presented with a donation from the Legion for $500 by Steve Dills. We are so thankful for the support. We set dates for our Christmas party playing laser tag on Dec. 5, and our public speaking competition on Feb. 1, 2015. We are planning on participating in the Santa Claus Parade as well. We did a bottle drive on Nov. 1 and were able to earn over $200 in support of our club activities. We volunteered at Bethany on Nov. 15 to help with Bingo and Happy Chefs, where we learned to make bread pudding (the recipe was called ‘You’re pudding me on’). On Nov. 17, we made Christmas trees
out of hangers. It was so much fun! We had six hangers each! We attached them all together, then we had a small box of Christmas tree lights that we taped on. Next we had some garland that we wrapped around the hangers. We all oohed and aahed as we watched the Christmas trees light. It was so beautiful! Last Sunday we did the Rotary Skate-athon. Every one that came got a small piece of paper that counted by fives all the way up to 100, so whenever we did five laps, we came to the side and a few Interact members would mark our card. We had to get a donation for our Skatea-thon. A great thanks for everyone who donated some money for our 4-H club.
Red Deer West 4-H Beef Club kicks off 2014/2015 club year PARKER DEPALME AND KYLE BELICH SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Red Deer West 4-H Beef Club kicked off the 2014/2015 club year with our organizational meeting on Oct. 20 at Ridgewood Hall. We voted our new executive board, which consists of: President Shannon
Bickley; Vice-President Jenaya Moore; secretary Courtney Armitage; treasurer Reid Depalme; club reporters Kyle Belich and Parker Depalme; historians Paulina Wolswinkel, Jayden Bickley and Emilee Bickley; parliamentarian Wacey Townsend; and general leader Dana Depalme. This year, we have 24 members in our club. Six of those are new to beef 4-H.
We had weigh-in on Nov. 1 at Burnt Lake Auction Mart. Thank you to Mel Glencross for the use of the auction mart and Dennis Magill for running the weigh scale for us. We weighed in 24 market steers and 10 carcass steers. Female projects this year are nine heifers and 12 cow/calf pairs. Our first club activity will be on Dec. 8 at Lazer Force with our gift exchange and
potluck supper. Our club will then prepare for public speaking and presentations in February. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors and supporters. Our club has many great opportunities with your support. We are looking forward to another great year of 4-H.

Former mayor appreciated for role in promenade creation
Improved emergency care access needed Dear Editor, I think we need a hospital in Sylvan Lake, because whenever someone gets injured, we have to drive them somewhere else instead of getting them care sooner. For example, one time my dad hurt his head really badly and he was bleeding everywhere and we had to drive to Red Deer’s emergency room to get him care. What I am saying is that if we get a hospital, injuries can be taken care of
a lot more quickly than driving to Red Deer. It also comes to mind that Sylvan Lake’s population has increased a lot over the past few years, and the chances of a car crash or something like it will begin to increase too. It will be a good idea to get a hospital in Sylvan if there will be more accidents in the future. Seth Myhr, Grade 6, Sylvan Lake
Dear Editor, Thanks to former mayor Susan Samson for her prominent part in creating the lakeside promenade and park we now all enjoy. Even though it was a controversial project at times, she was always a good communicator, willing to talk to people throughout the process regardless of their views. The current mayor needs to take a page from her book. I tried contacting him several time this past summer regarding matters of concern, but he did not reply even once. His smiling pictures in the newspaper do no earthly good if he cannot

take the time to communicate with people personally. A final comment regarding the supposed Lighthouse Park behind the new marina development that has closed off lake access to the public: Tall walls of expensive condos now block the lake views with only a long, narrow sidewalk connected to the minuscule sliver of land that is supposed to be the park. The old lighthouse should never have been torn down, and a permit should never have been issued for this fiasco. Craig Little, Sylvan Lake
