Public support sought for rail trail Body Waves Esthetics & Tanning Salon By Lachlan Labere

There’s still opportunity for the Shuswap to become a hub of one of the most ambitious trail projects in the province, provided more people get onboard. The Shuswap Trail Alliance is asking the public to help in the push for government support of the Shuswap-North Okanagan rail trail concept that could potentially link Sicamous to other communities along decommissioned rail lines extending to the U.S. border. This includes a connection to the famous Kettle Valley Rail Trails. The District of Sicamous, the cities of Enderby, Salmon Arm and Vernon, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District and the Splatsin First Nation are already backing
the plan, and this summer were successful in garnering support from the Union of B.C. Municipalities for a resolution calling on the B.C. government to “facilitate public acquisition and ownership of abandoned transportation corridors,” and to work with UBCM to develop a funding mechanism, such as a province-wide parcel tax, to help governments or community groups purchase and maintain corridors for public recreational use. Still, for this to be successful, the Trail Alliance’s Lori Schneider Wood says communities along the proposed corridor better have a vision and a plan in place. “I’d guess… there’s maybe a 20 per cent chance of pulling this through right now without having the government levels all say-

She says Sicamous, in particular, should be onboard 100 per cent, as the com-
munity could benefit financially from being the northern trailhead or hub. The trail alliance has an action form people can fill out and submit to their local government officials as well as the province. It can be found at http://www. shuswaptrailalliance. com.
Continued from front sheriff’s office.” Dugdale is largely familiar with city hall because his mom, Louise Dugdale, works there. “His main thing has been to bring something back to Enderby,” said Louise. “I am very proud of Rick and what he has accomplished.” And Dugdale is looking beyond Go With Me. He wants to see this region become a destination for motion pictures. “The North Okanagan is very versatile. There are many different looks. You can look like mid-California to northern California or Oregon,” he said.

Snow forces film shoot inside “The airport and hotels that are quality also work for the area, and there is crew here.” The North Okanagan is also more geographically condensed than other communities, and that’s important in a business where time is money. “The logistics here are manageable. You can shoot in Vernon and go to Enderby in 30 minutes but it can take two hours to go from the North Shore to Tsawwassen (in the Lower Mainland),” said Dugdale. However, Wednesday’s snowfall created some challenges for a script that didn’t call for white stuff. “It wasn’t a huge rewrite but there was some tweaking. We moved inside to control

the conditions,” said Dugdale. But even with that, crew members had to sweep snow off a tree in a Regent Avenue yard. “We will be seeing the tree out of the window so we don’t want to show too much snow,” said Dugdale. Residents keep walking past the set, often stopping to speak to the actors and crew. “We want people living here to enjoy the experience. We don’t want, ‘Damn, Hollywood was here and left,’” said Dugdale. “I love people taking it in and educating themselves about the industry. If we can inspire one kid to go to Vancouver and learn (the trade), we have done our job.”

Milfoil growth sees unexpected increase By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAFF
It’s green, invasive and it’s growing. That’s what Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors heard at their Nov. 13 board meeting in a report from the Milfoil Planning Committee Meeting. “Milfoil growth in the Shuswap has generally been on a historical decline but has increased this year,” noted a report to the board.” Consistent with previous years, the Shuswap program will focus primarily on public, high-use swimming beaches, with lower priority given to private foreshore, particularly given the challenges of maneuvering around private docks.”
At the Oct. 8 Milfoil Control Planning Committee, environmental services co-ordinator Hamish Kassa advised the 2015 program will, as in other years, include rototilling, harvesting, public information, surveillance and harvesting. He also noted the capital reserve account will be increased to facilitate the purchase of a new harvester, as the current machine is due for replacement in 2019. That machine will be retained as a secondary resource when heavy growth occurs. “Maybe over time we’ll be able to figure out what contributes to the growth of this weed; I see some of the beds were so thick this year,” said Area E Rural Sicamous-Malakwa
director Rhona Martin. “We know it, we’ve had the conversation but we need to bring it to public’s attention.” Martin said CSRD directors decided many years ago that they were going to eradicate milfoil, but soon realized how difficult the
weed was to deal with. “The lake is a very vital part of the community and the pictures we saw were disgusting,” she added. “I want people to be aware… if we’re not vigilant, other things could take hold, and not just at the cost to recreation.”

Recycle program changing
CSRD: Moving to industry-led program. The new year will bring changes to Columbia Shuswap Regional District recycling depots. The regional district’s residential recycling program is transitioning to a new, industry-led recycling program managed by Multi Materials BC (MMBC). The CSRD will receive financial compensation through its agreement with MMBC to operate the residential depot collection program. Similar to other return-to-depot programs such those for tires, electronics and paint recycling, the CSRD’s Solid Waste Management Plan dictates if there is an industryled program in place, the management and costs associated with delivering the program should be the responsibility of the industry. “MMBC’s obligations include funding many aspects of the depot-collection program, which is currently funded entirely through taxation,” says CSRD environmental services team leader Ben Van Nostrand. “Transferring to the MMBC model shifts the costs and responsibilities to industry, rather than the taxpayer.” Some business organizations, including the Canadian Federa-
tion of Independent Businesses, the BC Agriculture Council, the B.C. Bottle and Recycling Depot and the Canadian Newspaper Association are opposed to the program proposed by MMBC. They argue the program punishes business with high fees,

Businesses are exempt from the fees if they have under $1 million of retail sales, generate less than a tonne of material or operate out of a single retail outlet, while generators of one to five tonnes per year pay flat fees of $550 or $1,200. The new MMBC program will allow residents to recycle additional items that are currently not accepted in the program, such as aerosol containers, Styrofoam, film plastic (plastic bags) and disposable drink cups. These items are in addition to the existing collection of paper

and cardboard, plastic and tin containers and glass. The new program will require residents to sort their recycling into six different categories, and recycling depot sites will be staffed with hours of operation to ensure only recyclable products are accepted. The new sorting categories are: • Containers (includes plastic, metal, and paper that contained liquid (i.e. disposable coffee cups) • Paper (includes printed paper, cardboard and packaging of dry goods) • Plastic bags • White Styrofoam • Coloured Styrofoam • Glass. The MMBC program is for residential use only and businesses will have to find alternate collection options. Check the CSRD website for program information, depot locations and hours of operation. Protest part of democracy
Is there a place for acts of conscience in our society? Protesters on Burnaby Mountain have proven they feel strongly enough about stopping a proposed Kinder Morgan oil pipeline that they are willing to be arrested. No doubt there are many who will dismiss their protests as foolish and misguided. But there are those, too, who will view their actions as heroic and principled, and will privately wish they had the courage to take a stand against something they feel, on a very deep and fundamental level, is wrong. To those arrested, it is all the price of making a statement. It is not a price they wish to pay. It is one they feel compelled to endure. Their actions force us to assess where we stand on the issue – or indeed any issue that disturbs us. How many of us would be willing to put our comfort and name on the line, to back our word – easily given – with unequivocal action? And what would be the tipping point that would compel each of us to similar protest? Many of us leap to label protesters as ‘wing-nuts,’ and bandy the term ‘professional protester’ as though the existence of such a thing would nullify all right to protest. Dissent is not popular in our society. The conventional wisdom is that governments always have good and just reasons to act as they do, that lies are never told to voters and that business interests always act for the good of humanity. Anyone who believes otherwise is swiftly dismissed as a ‘conspiracy theorist.’ Yet we have discovered time and time again that governments can be wrong, and that conspiracies – sometimes on a grand scale – do exist. Protests may be discomfiting, but without the right to dissent, without the right to protest, we have no business pretending we live in a democracy. -Peace Arch News

OPINION
Former fisheries officer pens insightful read Author and retired fisheries officer Randy Nelson spent the better part of 35 years chasing and, more often than not, catching poachers with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO). Over the course of his career he also dealt with a good number of polluters and politicians. In his book, Poachers, Polluters and Politics – A Fisheries Officer’s Career, Nelson has chronicled some of his experiences dealing with angry, axe-wielding, rockthrowing, shotgun-blasting fishermen, evasive, uncooperative corporate cronies, and, as he so eloquently puts it, a number of political “brown-nosers and bobbleheads,” not to mention the occasional charging grizzly. There are some 94 stories in the book that provide a unique insight into the lives of fisheries officers such as Nelson and the communities in which they served. Many of the stories deal with specific incidents. Others deal with long-term issues that continue, even to this day, to affect both the
THE GREAT OUTDOORS James Murray DFO and the fish stocks in B.C. Firm but fair and always passionate about his job, Nelson describes in unbiased detail the many different people and situations with which he was confronted. He pulls no punches when talking about his dealings with First Nations, private corporations and government bureaucrats, as well as groups and individuals within DFO. He readily admits to having challenged the status quo throughout his career. In reading the book, one also gets the distinct impression that Nelson spent a considerable amount of time coming up with new and innovative ways to
catch bad guys. It is equally clear Nelson was able to earn the respect and admiration of his fellow officers, as well as the people he dealt with in the various communities where he was posted – including, in some instances, the same people he had charged with offences. Poachers, Polluters and Politics – A Fisheries Officer’s Career is an interesting, entertaining and enlightening read. However, having met Nelson and spoken with him a number of times, I find the man even more interesting than the book. Modest and unassuming, Nelson is also the most decorated fisheries officer in the history of B.C. Not only that, all the profits from the sales of his book go to The Fallen Officer’s Fund for the families of fish and wildlife officers killed in the line of duty. (According to statistics, a fisheries or wildlife officer in North America is eight-times more likely to be killed on the job than a police officer.) What impresses me the most about Nelson is that he
never fails to call things the way he sees them. “Corporate greed and the push for profit will often trump concerns for the environment. Today, most companies understand the public’s awareness of the environment and will spend millions to convince the public that they are good environmental stewards. Any time a large company initiates an ad campaign, you can almost be certain they have recently been caught on the wrong side of the law, or are trying to avert a bad reputation. Companies that take their environmental responsibilities seriously rarely need to advertise.” Nelson also notes how budget cuts and enforcement downsizing have left B.C. open to fish poachers with little risk of getting caught. Randy Nelson will be at Hidden Gems Bookstore at 331 Alexander St. NE on Saturday, Dec. 6, between 11 a.m. an 3 p.m., to chat with people and sign copies of his book. If prompted, I’m sure he will also be willing to share a few stories.

Riparian area rules raise questions By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAFF
A bylaw complaint in the South Shuswap sparked a conversation among frustrated directors at the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s November board meeting. The development in question concerns construction in a floodplain area that began prior to the introduction last spring of the Area C official community plan. In the ensuing discussion, Development and Planning manager Gerald Christie advised directors that property owners in the regional district are not always getting the right advice. “There seems to be prevailing attitudes from qualified environmental professionals (QEP),” he said at the November board meet-
ing. “Some QEPs and non-QEPs are providing advice that may not be to the best interest of the landowners.” On the other hand are landowners who, given the correct information, tell the professionals to go ahead anyway. That led to a conversation on who handles Riparian Area Regulations (RAR). Senior planner Dan Passmore explained, where there is no building permit regimen in place, the only mechanism that applies is board approval. “Without an approval from CSRD, it’s basically a self-policing thing,” Passmore said. “But no development is supposed to be happening within 30 metres of the high water mark.” To Area D Falkland/ Salmon Valley/Ranchero director Rene
Talbot’s comment that the province advises they will not enforce RAR rules on private land, Christie advised in areas where there is no OCP, the province is indeed required to enforce their own rules. “It is not up to us to do something if we don’t have an OCP,” he said. Area F North Shuswap director Larry Morgan said there is a prevailing attitude in his electoral area to go ahead and worry about the consequences afterward. Area C south Shuswap director Paul Demenok agreed and suggested the board look at including funding for educating the public on the development process in upcoming budget discussions. “In Area C, we seem to spend a lot of time on bylaw enforcement issues, things
that could have been nipped in the bud,” he said. Area E Rural Sicamous director Rhona Martin suggested composing a list of questions to hand out to people who are panning on developing a property within regional district borders.

Looking for lost Tiger
Tabby: A much-loved cat missing following accident. By Tracy Hughes
MARKET NEWS STAFF
In the wake of a car crash last Friday, Rachel Richter’s boyfriend was taken to hospital, but the family is also now missing their much-loved cat, Tiger, who could not be found at the accident scene. On Friday, Nov. 21, Richter’s boyfriend lost control of his Toyota Tacoma truck and it rolled off the road near
Linberg Road in Sorrento. In the car with
Tiger him was Tiger, a grey tabby.
“After the truck was rolled and my boyfriend taken to hospital, our cat was no where to be found,” said Richter. “The truck is totaled and was taken to the impound and the employees at the impound lot assured us that there was no cat in the damaged truck.” Richter is hoping there were people at the scene of the accident, who may have an idea of where Tiger may be.
“We can only hope that Tiger found a warm home close by. He is a declawed indoor cat, so for him to survive in the wild would unfortunately not be possible. “He is the most friendliest, social cat you’ll ever meet,” she says. They are hoping someone may find the cat and return him to them. Richter can be contacted at 587-435-7224.

How parents can prepare for sniffles and restless nights (NC) Fall is here and with the chilly weather comes the dreaded cold and flu season which can last many months. For parents this can mean sleepless nights, unhappy children and stress from not knowing what to do. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the sniffles and restless nights: - Ensure you and your family are washing your hands regularly. Teach your children the importance of washing their hands, especially after sneezing and coughing, to help stop the spread of germs. - Being sick as a child is not fun. To help ease their pain, look into products that will reduce their discomfort. The Braun No touch + forehead thermometer can take your child’s temperature without even touching him or her,
allowing the child to sleep through the whole process. Ask for this thermometer at your favourite mass retailer or pharmacy. - Keep surfaces clean. Use disinfectant to clean commonly touched surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom to keep them free of germs. Stock up on supplies. Make sure you have plenty of facial tissues, fluids, vitamin C and cold/flu medication to help you and your children through the illness. - Invest in a humidifier. Research has shown that maintaining indoor humidity levels between 40-60 per cent reduces the survival of flu viruses in the air. For example, the Vicks Starry Night Humidifier – available at Toys R Us, Walmart, Target, and Loblaws, Jean Coutu, Rexall and

Pantomime, a family affair Get ready for gags, hoots, belly laughs and giggles as Shuswap Theatre puts a musical Scrooge on stage. Even while Shuswap Theatre’s successful The Odd Couple was running, Bah, Humbug! was in rehearsal. A much-loved Christmas tradition is back, with a fun-filled musical pantomime based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. It features all the familiar characters, including Ebenezer Scrooge, the ghost of Jacob Marley and the Cratchitt family, except that Tiny Tim is now a teenager with a bit of attitude. He thinks he’s funny, but his family is not so sure. But Shuswap families can be sure they’ll be entertained by the on-stage antics of Bah Humbug! The guest director is Paul Kirkwood-Hackett from Asparagus Theatre in Armstrong. He is supported by Jaeden Izik-Dzurko as pianist, with choral rehearsal assistance from Peter Blacklock. Randy Brogden and Darby McEachern-Corley are responsible for the set design. Mike Nash plays the principle female role – Scrooge’s old girlfriend, Belle, who is doing her best to care for London’s orphans. Scrooge comes to life in talented Jason Smeltzer, with Randy Brogden entertaining as Marley’s ghost. Bah Humbug! features a cast of 24 in this Christmas musical that will draw guffaws from everyone. Tickets are available at the door. Shows take place Dec. 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7:30 p.m., and Dec. 6, 7, 14 matinees take place at 1:30 p.m.

WESTERN PLOWS & SANDERS
WESTERN PLOWS & SANDERS
By Richard Rolke BLACK PRESS
An Okanagan native is picking up a camera and joining the fight against a looming invader. Brynne Morrice, who grew up in Vernon and is an actor in New York City, is filming the documentary, The Threat of Zebra Mussels in B.C. “This is really a story that needs to be told,” he said during an interview from New York. It was during a visit to the Okanagan two years ago that he became aware of the possibility of zebra and quagga mussels, which originate from Europe, taking hold in the valley and changing the ecosystem. “I was curious and looked it up. I became concerned. If it gets into our lakes and rivers, it will be devastating,” he said. “I came back home this summer and nothing has been done at the government level.” It was then that Morrice decided to tap into his skills as an actor and a producer and launch a documentary along with his sister Eilidh Morrice-Ashdown and filmmaker Crystal Arnette. However, the first challenge was a lack of funding

But that was resolved by seeking donors on the Kickstarter website. “We had no idea if anyone would donate so we shot low (at $2,000). But within three days, we shot past $2,000,” said Morrice. “We are now at $3,000 and if we can raise an extra $2,000, we can do a couple of other things like travelling to Arizona and Texas.” For Morrice, it’s important to show the damage quagga and zebra mussels have already caused across North America. “Razor-sharp and foul-smelling mussel shells pile up on beaches. Native fish populations all but disappear as the filter-feeding mussels decimate the
lake plankton, which form the foundation of the food chain (in the Great Lakes, where the mussels first took hold in North America, the lake trout population has declined by 95 per cent).” Most of the B.C. filming for the documentary is completed.
It’s anticipated the documentary will be completed in January and then it will be posted on the Internet. “The assertive goal is to get people to watch it and then call their MLA, MP and mayor and say they are concerned and they want inspection stations.”

Glycemic index helps manage and prevent diabetes LIVING WELL Thirty per cent of the next generation will develop diabetes at some point in their lives. Chances are diabetes affects of will affect someone you know. To lower the risk of diabetes, the Canadian Diabetes Association recommends people eat a low Glycemic Index (GI) diet and engage in
active living. Dr. David Jenkins, a Canadian nutritional sciences professor, developed the Glycemic Index. It ranks carbohydrate-rich foods by how much they raise blood glucose (sugar) levels. When you eat food containing carbohydrates, glucose breaks down during digestion and gives you energy. After you eat, blood glucose level rise. Foods that increase glucose levels quickly have a higher GI rating. Foods that do so more slowly
have a lower one. Generally, the lower the rating, the better the quality of the carbohydrate and the greater the overall nutritional benefit. Low GI foods are usually low in calories and fat, while high in fibre, nutrients and antioxidants. Choosing low GI foods more often has many health benefits. Prevent obesity: Low GI foods digest more slowly and stay in your stomach longer. This makes you feel full longer, resulting in consuming fewer calories
and making it easier to control weight. In addition, low GI foods do not cause blood glucose levels to spike. Prevent type 2 diabetes: High GI foods may increase the body’s demand for insulin and raise the workload of the pancreas. Some researchers believe that eating a diet rich in high GI foods for many years may cause the pancreas to wear out, resulting in type 2 diabetes. Eating low GI foods can ease the demand on the pancreas.
Manage diabetes: Eating low-GI foods helps control blood glucose and improves the body’s sensitivity to insulin. These foods do not break down into sugar as quickly and can keep blood glucose from spiking which allows the body to keep up with insulin demands. For those with diabetes, controlling blood glucose plays an important role in preventing the serious complications of the disease. Prevent heart disease: High GI foods
can raise cholesterol and triglyceride levels, increasing the risk of heart disease. In contrast, consuming low GI foods keeps blood glucose and insulin levels in check. Some evidence suggests low GI foods reduce total blood cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol, while increasing heartfriendly, good HDL cholesterol. Including lower GI foods in your diet can be easy. Eat more whole grain pasta, legumes, vegetables and low-fat
dairy products. Try using vinaigrette dressings instead of creamy dressings. They are lower in fat and the acidity of the vinegar slows digestion, lowering your meal’s GI. Choose breads that contain a high proportion of whole or cracked grains, stone-ground whole wheat flour, oats, bran and seeds. Aim to include at least one low GI food in each meal. - The author, Laura Kalina, is a community nutritionist with Interior Health

CSRD refrains from declaring region GMO-free By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAFF
They listened politely but Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors did not fulfill a request put forward by a delegation from the City of Salmon Arm’s Environmental Advisory Committee. Warren Bell, John McLeod and Hugh Tyson addressed the board at its Nov. 13 meeting, ending the presentation with a request for a resolution declaring the regional
district as a non-GMO zone and to support the labelling of GMO produced foods. The third member of the delegation to speak was McLeod, a longtime farmer in the area. Area E Rural Sicamous-Malakwa director Rhona Martin expressed support for labelling GMO foods and asked McLeod if all the farmers in the regional district would support the committee’s request or would there be opposition.
He replied that some would likely be opposed, describing them as good farmers not meaning to do harm. “I have used every chemical known to man; it’s about how we think we can control nature,” he said, pointing out the dangers of tinkering with food products and referring specifically to how dairy farmers used to treat mastitis in cows with penicillin and had to move to sulfa drugs when penicillin was no
longer effective. “We’ve created a bacteria so powerful it would kill a 2,400-pound cow in 24 hours.” But former Golden mayor, Christina Benty stated the issue is one of a federal nature. “I deeply appreciate your concern. I am worried about GMOs too, but I don’t support benign resolutions that are without the ability to enforce,” she said. “And we could be held to account.”

The other directors agreed and voted unanimously to accept the presentation as information only. McLeod later said he was disappointed.

that if all other ingredients must be listed on labels – sodium, sugar, carbs – why is a GMO designation not included. “I’m surprised and disappointed that some directors choose to take direction from the federal government rather than polling the electorate they represent,“ he said.

Province offers funds for replanting The province is committing $8.4 million for a seven-year tree fruit replant program that supports grower’s efforts to meet consumer demands for high-value, high-quality B.C. fruit. Premier Christy Clark announced the details of the program with representatives of B.C.’s tree fruit industry.
“It’s about providing certainty for B.C. fruit growers,” said Premier Clark. “And making sure we continue to showcase the best tree fruits in the world, both here at home and internationally.” Beginning April 1, 2015, through to the 2021 season, growers will be able to apply for the new program. The Salmon Arm Bulldogs Boxing Club will be taking 10 boxers to the Dan Vasser Memorial/Washington State Silver Gloves. This is not a small event; more than 180 participants are expected. The invitation came following a competition in Cranbrook where five Bulldogs attended – Dominic Barbosa, Pamela Wocknitz, Devon Baird, Dan Gawley and Kali Gawley – all putting in topnotch performances. “I am so proud of my athletes,” said head coach Peggy Maerz. “They represented Salmon Arm well, they were polite friendly ambassadors of our community, making friends with opponents. It was wonderful to watch.” Although the entry fee in Washington is just $10, the cost of travel and accommodations creates an obstacle to attending. These eager athletes are working hard in the gym and actively fundraising. They just completed a five-kilometre run for pledges that put them close to the halfway mark. The help of volunteers and local businesses made this a huge success. A fellow Boxing

Exciting games for Heat fans By Scott Koch CONTRIBUTOR
The past Junior Hockey Weekend started with a visit to Chase by the 100 Mile House Wranglers on Friday, Nov. 21. At the end of regulation play, the teams, in an entertaining contest, were tied at 5-5. In the first, Chase got on the board with Tyler Mork scoring on the power play assisted by Logan Mostat and Trevor Okino. Then 100 Mile scored four straight to complete the period. No scoring in the second, but Chase on the power play from Mostat, assists to Cody Hodges and Okino got things started. Another 100 Mile marker gave them a 5-2 lead prior to three
straight for the Heat. Mork from Alex Durbeniuk, Hayden Orton from Hodges and Travis Beaubien and then Mork on the power play for a hat trick from Kolten Moore and Mostat. In the first overtime, 100 Mile potted the winner to take two points down the road, Chase got a point for the tie in regulation. Saturday, Nov. 22, the Heat took on the Kamloops Storm at McArthur Park Arena. Badly outshot the Heat took a 5-2 loss. In the second, it was Wes Matsuda from Austin Willier and Zach Fournier and in the third Moore from Braden Hughes and Travis Churchill. Kamloops scored on the third of 13 power-play opportunities as the Heat spent

Sunday afternoon the 23rd saw a rematch at Art Holding Memorial Arena. Into the third period the Storm were up 3-0 when injury returning Captain Kaleb Boyle got his first from Beaubien and Okino.
His second came from a beauty of a pass from Okino with Mostat also assisting. That was all the scoring as this barn-burning event ended 3-2 for Kamloops. Not much for points but some positive signs as the Heat fight back
from a rash of injuries. Four regulars still remain out of the lineup with significant injuries. Next up the Eagles from Sicamous on Friday the 28th before the Heat travel to Kelowna on Saturday for a contest versus the Chiefs in the Little Apple.

GARY GRANT CARSCADDEN 1937 - 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Carscadden, our loving husband, dad, uncle, pop pop and friend. After a short stay in Bastion Place, Gary passed away on November 15, due to complications suffered from a stroke on September 16. He was 77. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary, son Todd, daughter Lara (Doug), grandson Nigel and numerous nephews and nieces. Gary was born on March 12, 1937 in Storthoaks, SK. In the summer of 1959, while playing baseball, Gary broke his leg, and while in the hospital he met Mary, when she provided nursing care to him. They married two years later. In 1970, Gary and family moved to High River, AB. In 1972, the family moved to Kamsack, SK, where they lived for 19 years. Gary worked in the insurance business. Later, he worked as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor at the Kamsack Union Hospital, and as a parts man at JD Farm Equipment. A celebration of life will be held on November 28, 2014 in the Mountainside Room at Bowers Funeral Home from 3 until 5 pm. Jack Bowers, a long time friend, is the celebrant, and tributes and anecdotes will be shared by friends. The deBoer girls will sing special songs as part of the celebration. Cremation will be followed by a private interment in Mt. Ida cemetery with her husband Bruce who predeceased her in 2004. Doreen was born in Vegreville, AB on October 7, 1935. The family later moved to Grimshaw. She married Bruce McCaig in 1954 and they relocated from Calgary to Salmon Arm in 1958. She first worked at the Bank of Commerce prior to opening her flower shop, the House of Flowers, in 1974. Left to remember Doreen are her special friends Gary and Cheryl as well as a cousin by marriage Muriel Murrant of Peace River. Additionally, there are more people that can be counted who enjoyed her loyal long time friendship. Doreen gained great respect for her artistic ability with flowers and for her prowess and love of baking. Her pies, cakes and bread earned her many awards at the Fall Fair, where she convened the baking section for many years. She loved hosting dinner parties, both casual evenings with friends and extravagant dinners complete with hand written menus and fabulous table settings. Of course the evening would not have been complete without suitable beverages. A very few lucky brides also had their wedding cakes prepared by Doreen. She was an avid reader and very proud of her skills as a wordsmith. She was a well-rounded reader with wide ranging interests. Her full size, unabridged dictionary held pride of place in her living room. Her extensive library brought her a great deal of satisfaction. A love of animals was Doreen’s trademark. She was especially fond of marmalade cats but no matter the colour any stray cat received her love, a home and veterinary care. Doreen had a sense of humour like no other and she always said if you couldn’t laugh, especially at yourself, there was no use in living. Her idea of humour closely paralleled that of Maxine, her favourite cartoon character. This attribute stood her in good stead when facing the challenges that life threw at her. She lived life on her own terms and fiercely defended her right to make her own decisions. Doreen was not shy at showing her enthusiasm for living life with passion and sharing her opinions. She often expressed her gratitude to those who helped her remain in her home. Memorial donations in memory of Doreen may be sent to the Shuswap Branch of the SPCA or to the Shuswap Community Foundation. Email condolences may be sent to Doreen’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com . Arrangements are in the care of Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium, Salmon Arm.

RENNISON, WENDY JANE (nee Fuchko) November 21, 1956 – November 14, 2014 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Wendy Jane Rennison. She was predeceased by her parents John and Eileen Fuchko. She is survived by husband Mike and children Rory and Erin. Wendy was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on November 21, 1956, moving to Tsawwassen at the age of twelve. She finished High School at Delta Secondary School and completed her Diploma in Communications from Kwantlen College in 1982. She married Mike in 1985 in White Rock, BC. After the arrival of Rory and Erin, the family moved to Armstrong in 1994. Wendy worked in the publishing industry as a typesetter, writer and editor. After the move to Armstrong, she worked as a secretary in the School District. She was always involved in the kids’ activities. An avid walker, she could be found morning and evening, walking the streets of Armstrong, taking time to talk to whomever she met. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at VGH Bone Marrow Transplant Program and the Palliative Care Unit. We were very lucky to have such a dedicated compassionate group of people, helping with Wendy’s care. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations to the BC Cancer Agency. Substance abuse needs more attention FROM THE HILL Colin Mayes
Sicamous Business Directory
I am always puzzled by the national media’s focus on trivial issues and missing the more important challenges facing society and gov-
ernments. Our society is being under-minded by substance abuse and very few people are talking about it. One in five Canadians (21.6 per cent) has a substance or alcohol abuse problem. Substance abuse costs us $40 billion per year in Canada. Eighty per cent of federal offenders have a history of substance abuse issues. Six million Canadians are in recovery. Contrary to the solutions of the NDP and Liberals
to legalize marijuana, because they say it is just a soft drug, studies found that 40 per cent of people that start using marijuana move on to harder drugs. Marijuana is proven to cause physiological side effects such as schizophrenia and paranoia. Smoking one joint has the same impact on the health of your lungs as smoking 20 cigarettes. We all know families that have lived these realities with their children.
The leader of the Liberal Party, Justin Trudeau, needs to ask these parents if legalizing marijuana is a good public policy. Both terrorists that murdered Canadian soldiers just a few weeks ago had substance abuse issues. It is easier to radicalize a person that is not mentally stable due to substance abuse. A large percentage of crime committed in Canada is linked to substance abuse and the cost to our health system is
immense. An RN told me that 70 per cent of emergency room cases in a Calgary hospital were related to substance abuse. Our Conservative government has funded money for more drug enforcement and for programs to help people kick their addictions. The RCMP’s D.A.R.E. Program to educate school children is to the credit of members willing to take time to organize this
Auto Repair
program. We as citizens must take this seriously and start educating our children and work at the community level to reach out to our friends and neighbours. I have heard of grandparents taking care of their children’s children because the parents had drug addictions and could no longer take care of their own children. They thought that after raising their own children they would now have time to relax and enjoy their grand-
children. Instead, they now have to be parents again. I was surprised to hear that a number of families in the riding have to deal with this issue. Legalizing marijuana or any drug addiction is just going to manifest this problem. The solution lies with our society to take a stance and work together in becoming a drug-free community. I believe we can do it, one person at a time.
