Mount Baker Secondary School teacher David Hill welcomes the players from 16 teams from around the province Thursday, Nov. 27, as the 4A Girls Volleyball Provincial Championships got underway at MBSS and the College of the Rockies. The opening ceremonies Thursday morning featured the athletes’ entrance, words of welcome from SD5 Superintendent Lynn Hauptman, MBSS Principal Viveka Johnson, St. Mary’s Band Chief Jim Whitehead, and performances from the MBSS band and choirs. Action then immediately got underway. Teams are split into four pools — each team plays three round robin games with all teams advancing to the playoffs. See Friday’s playoff schedule on Page 9.

Weekend has potential for ‘truck-destroying’ avalanches ARNE PETRYSHEN

Avalanche Canada issued a special public avalanche warning which includes the Rockies and the Purcells that will be in effect from Friday, Nov. 28, to Monday, Dec. 1. The warning comes as strong winds and warm temperatures bring high avalanche danger to the regions. “In many parts of the B.C. Interior we’ve had over a metre of snowfall in the past week,” Joe Lammers, public avalanche fore-

caster at the Avalanche Canada. “This new snow is overlying some of the weak crystals that formed during the recent dry cold spell that every one remembers.” He suspects much of the backcountry is in the midst of a natural avalanche cycle, with the potential for large destructive avalanches in many regions. The weekend weather is supposed to break with clear skies and cool weather. “Natural avalanche activity will likely taper off and the warn-

ing signs will be less obvious,” he said. “That said I’m certain human triggered avalanches will still be a very real possibility. “I should point out that the avalanches we could see could be large enough to destroy a truck.” Areas the avalanche centre is especially concerned about include Caribous, the North Columbia, the South Columbia, the Purcells and the Lizard Flathead.

Second eyewitness on the stand in Learn trial TRE VOR CR AWLEY

A second eyewitness to the shooting death of Tammy Ellis ended testimony at the trial of Cheyenne Learn on Thursday in Cranbrook Supreme Court in front of Justice Dev Dley. Crown counsel Lianna Swanson solicited testimony from the owner of the residence where the shooting took place, and defence counsel Brent Bagnall was able to cross-examine. The court also heard from Leonard Lau, an RCMP firearms expert, in the afternoon who testified about the modifications and operation of the sawed-off shotgun used in the shooting.

In the interest of protecting the privacy of the homeowner’s identity, she will be referred to as L.N. Learn is on trial for second degree murder in the shooting death of Tammy Ellis on Dec. 17, 2007. Learn was convicted in the first trial in 2009, but an appeal overturned the decision in 2013, and Learn was awarded a new trial. The day began with L.N. continuing her testimony from Wednesday afternoon, who established her version of the timeline leading up to the shooting and her interpretation of Learn’s level of alleged intoxication.

The Fickle Ways Of Winter

Cold weather coming this weekend Arne Pe trys hen Townsman Staff

Cranbrook was spared the heaping piles of snow that many areas around the Southwest and Southeast Interior received overnight Wednesday, but the cold is coming. Doug Lundquist, weather preparedness meteorologist at Environment Canada noted the weather would on

be on a downward trend from Thursday high of eight degrees. “It’s going to be a big shift from the warm temperatures down to much colder weather for the weekend as an arctic front is going to move through Friday evening,” he said, noting that it will likely get to -17 degrees on Sunday morning. But that will start to again

turn around next week. “Then gradual warming next week, that is warm air moving in from the west again,” he said. He said that weather would affect the whole region. “The difference is in the Southwest region where it snowed so much the message is really clean up everything — get rid of all the ruts

and problems with your roads before the really big freeze comes, because if that freezes solid it’s going to be a real headache.” He said it won’t be as much of an issue in Cranbrook and area, as there’s not as much snow. “But certainly we want to make sure our roads are well prepared for colder weather if there’s still snow on them

or ice,” he said. Lundquist said theseason has so far been average for temperature, but it’s been a record setter for wetness. “I think you’ve been wetter than normal — you had some snow then it melted,” he said. “Normally you have, in the 90 day period, little more than 75 mm of precipitation. You’ve had nearly 125 mm. So way above aver-

onna Grainger from the East Kootenay Foundation for Health says the annual holiday fundraiser, the Starlite Campaign, is one of the most beautiful campaigns she has ever been involved with. And that’s because it began with a gift from the heart and has carried on in that spirit. Begun seven years ago when the East Kootenay Regional Hospital was undergoing renovations, Grainger says that a new direction was being sought for the Festival of Trees. “We wanted stars to represent all the people of different faiths and backgrounds who are a part of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. We looked at having a star made in Calgary but it was too expensive. But along the way, one of the maintenance people from the hospital heard me talking about it and said he could make me one. I didn’t think too much of it, but a couple of weeks later someone said, ‘have you seen what the maintenance team has done?’ I went down to see and there were the stars. They did it on their own time and they do it every year. “They don’t want their faces out there, this is just their way of giving. They never want to see those stars go out.” With that kind of start, the Starlite Campaign has become a holiday tradition. With each $5,000 interval another star on the roof line

Campaigning by Starlight

The East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s major fundraiser of the year is underway of East Kootenay Regional is lit. “It’s been a glorious way to highlight the generosity of donors and makes a significant impact for funding medical equipment and/or patient comforts at hospitals and health care sites in the region,” Grainger said. Last year the EKRH Starmakers erected a surprise extra-large star on the highest roof point at the East

Kootenay Regional Hospital. On November 28 that Star and stars for Eagles Nest RV Resort (Judy’s Star) and the BMO (Bank of Montreal) will light up to signify the start of the annual campaign. “We made some smaller starts to go across the roof line and in future years, other stars will go across the new ER.” This year, the Starlite Campaign is focusing fund-

raising on new equipment for the new six-bed ICU currently under construction at EK Regional. The goal of this year’s Starlite Campaign is $150,000, but the overall goal for the ER fundraising is $1 million in 17 months. The campaigns are sort of separate and sort of combined. “It’s not too often a foundation has to combine fundraising campaigns (annual and capital) together but

being as unique as we are in the East Kootenay, Starlite and the ICU working in conjunction makes this holiday giving season even more meaningful,” said Grainger. “The ICU treats the sickest of the sick — trauma, strokes, heart attacks. This ICU is incredibly important for the whole region. Every year, we’ve been very successful. Our campaign to raise a million dollars for the

age in the wetness category.” He said it was two days of rainfall in that really put it over the top. “There were two days in a row of record rainfall in September that that amounted to over 40 mm,” he said. Those days were Sept. 2, which had 11 mm of rainfall, and Sept. 3, which had 32 mm. Those records go back to 1968.

mammography was finished in 13 months” Regional health care auxiliaries, although independent from the hospital, do support the Starlite Campaign. For instance, Grainger says, the Kimberley Health Care Auxiliary is about to give $40,000 this year, with a goal of assisting in the ER equipment fundraising. Much of the funding raised by the Starlite Campaign goes back out to the region as well, Grainger says. “EKFH put out $530,000 in funding across the region since the Starlite Campaign began, so money that we got in has already gone back out.” Donations can be made at your local hospital or healthcare facility, through Canada Post – EKFH, 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC or online: www.ekfh.ca. For more information or to schedule a presentation about the Starlite or ICU campaigns contact Donna Grainger, EKFH Executive Director at 1-877489-6481 or email: donna. grainger@interiorhealth.ca. Grainger reminds you that a gift to health care helps light the path for others. “Whether it is your wish to support your local community or bring the best in Intensive Care to the regional hospital, a gift to the Starlite Campaign truly benefits the quality of care for you, your friends and family. “And holiday giving is a great opportunity to remember someone with a gift to health care.”

Learn trial continues through third day Continued from page 1 Crown counsel also went through a series of scene photos with L.N., and presented the gun that was used by Learn in the shooting. “That’s it,” confirmed

L.N., who was visibly shaken after looking at the firearm. L.N. testified that, around 11 p.m. the night of the incident, Learn kicked open the

door, entered the house and stepped into the living room and shot Ellis after the two had a five-minute argument outside the residence. L.N. testified that Learn did not appear to

“I would hedge my bets and suspect that the Kootenay-Boundary region, the South Rockies and the North Rockies should at least be on our radar,” he said. Lammers said they don’t have steady data streams coming from those areas, which makes it difficult to predict the danger. Another problem he mentioned is the variability from region to region. “It’s just really important for people to be aware of their localized danger,” he said. “And when in doubt just reel it back. The snowpack structure is complicated at this point. My advice to backcountry travellers is if you’re heading to the backcountry, I would just stick to low-angle terrain. I’d watch your overhead hazards. I wouldn’t regroup in the run-out zone of the avalanche slide paths.”

Lammers encouraged people to take it easy this weekend. “If you have a bad feeling about the terrain that your group is heading into, I’d speak up,” he said. “It’s a long season with lots of great riding ahead of us. You’ll want to be around to enjoy it.” It’s also a good time to brush up on using avalanche gear. He noted each backcountry user must be equipped with essential avalanche safety equipment — an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel. It is also important that everyone has avalanche training and has practiced using the equipment. For the avalanche forecast, check www.avalanche.ca. Bagnall began his cross-examination late in the morning, digging into the relationship dynamics between L.N. and Learn’s ex-girlfriend, known as B.L. and Tammy Ellis. L.N. testified that it seemed unusual that Ellis and B.L. grew so

close so quickly, despite having known each other for less than a few weeks. L.N. also testified that Ellis had a personality that was assertive, outspoken and impulsive and had a tendency to insert herself into other people’s relationships around her. L.N. also said that both Ellis and B.L. did not speak highly of Learn when he was not in their presence. In the afternoon, Lau took the stand to offer testimony as an expert

Dalke takes on dangerous animal challenge T r e vo r C r aw l e y Townsman Staff

Nikita Dalke got in on another hunt and faced down a dangerous animal challenge in the latest episode of Extreme Huntress. The Kimberley resident competed in a reality hunting competition over the summer in Texas, which was filmed at the 777 Ranch and broken up into several episodes that air online. In the latest episode, Dalke got in on a hunt with fellow competitor

Margaret Botha, who has yet to bag an animal since the beginning of the competition. Botha, from South Africa, was on the hunt for a deer, but was unable to find her animal out on the range. “I though the hunt was pretty good even though we didn’t see anything,” Dalke said. “We didn’t see anything or saw signs of anything, but I thought it was a good hunt.” The wind had also kicked up, which made

Bagnall cross-examined very briefly, noting that the end of the shotgun barrel looked like it had been machined and not sawed-off. He also noted that the shotgun shell recovered at the scene looked like it was old and exposed to the elements. The trial will continue on Friday with testimony from an RCMP officer who attended the scene of the shooting.

It was really getting to her.” Also out on the ranch was Kasi Geraci and Christie Pisani, while Erika Bergmark was hunting a fourhorned sheep with Amanda Caldwell. Despite an initial miscommunication on what sheep she could shoot, Bergmark was able to get a second opportunity at her management animal, and she was able to bag her animal. The dangerous ani-

mal challenge was a highlight of the episode, as the ladies had to use a 375 bolt-action Ruger to shoot a paper target of a Cape buffalo rigged up on a pulley system. The target would cross the shooter from right to left, and the ladies had to load, aim and fire all while a judge stood behind them shouting as a distraction. The gun itself was a little intimidating, with a forceful kick after pulling the trigger. “I’ve shot shotguns before that are a little too long for me and I can deal with it, but that thing was way too long,” said Dalke. “I could barely reach the trigger.” The challenge was split into three rounds: the first round, the shooter had to shoot twice. The second round, the shooter had to shoot once, and the third round, the shooter needed just one shot. Dalke was the first up. “It sucked being the guinea pig,” she laughed. “It would’ve been nice to watch one of the other girls go first, get an idea of what to expect with the kick.” Next episode, Botha will head back out with Dalke as her partner for another hunt for a Sika/ elk hybrid animal.

Canada Music Week celebrated in Cranbrook

For the Townsman

Last Sunday, November 23, at the Knox Presbyterian Church, 34 music students present-

ed a varied, well prepared programme of Canadian music, featuring piano, strings and voice.

Following this delightful show, Katherine Nimmert and Wendy Guimont presented awards for composing,

adjudicated by Geoffrey Haynes. This year we had over 30 compositions submitted, the highest number in many

years. Following this, the E.K. Music Teachers’ scholarships were awarded to students

achieving the top two highest marks in their category, for the Royal Conservatory of Canada exams.

Thank you to all the students, teachers and parents for all their help for this event.

Tomson Highway presentation at KCT caps Human Day tour F o r t h e To w n s m a n

Beginning this week, School District 5 (SD5) is proud to partner with the East Kootenay Humanity Network (EKHN) to promote the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Day of December 10 by “touring” six famous humanitarians through SD5 schools. Human Rights Day was proclaimed by the UN in 1950 following the December 10 adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, authored by Canada’s John Peters Humphrey, past Director of Human Rights for the UN. “It’s an important day to celebrate”, says Amy Cross, consultant for the EKHN. “This is a declaration that recognizes a broad range of political, civil, social, cultural and economic rights. It’s also led to the addition of other protections over the years including that of children, women, victims of torture and persons with disabilities.” Trustee Trina Ayling, SD5 representative on the EKHN, agrees with its importance and explains that the tour consists of life-size cut-out of famous humanitarians. “We’re encouraging students to take photographs, or “selfies”, with the celebrity cut-outs and hashtag or post them to the Humanity Network website along with a short message about what human rights mean to them. We want to build awareness around what these important individu-

Tomson Highway als did, how their efforts impact the freedoms we enjoy today and what it means for tomorrow. But we also want it to be fun, interactive and relevant to how kids communicate today.” Short bios will accompany each of the “celebrities” and the road show will complete its Cranbrook leg of the tour at the Key City Theatre (KCT) on the evening of December 9. The peak of the tour is a free presentation by award-winning author and lecturer, Tomson Highway, who will be speaking on racial diversity and harmony in Canada at the KCT on December 9 at 7 p.m. According to Cross, the focus of the annual EKHN keynote speaker this year is about raising awareness of issues related to ‘Humanity’ and the exploration

of these issues to create harmony, generate conversations and build welcoming and inclusive communities in the Kootenays. “We enjoyed a lot of participation last year, especially from students, when we asked what mountains mean to our communities. We wanted to do something along the same vein but make it fresh and new. Thus, the travelling road show was born.” The six “celebrities” of the road show include Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Canadian born John Peters Humphrey, Nellie McClung and Buffy Sainte-Marie. The road show began on Tuesday, November 25, at Amy Woodland School and continue into the Elk Valley following the December 9 Tomson Highway presentation at the KCT. It will also make appearances along the way at various East Kootenay community locations. For school tour dates and times and for a link to the EKHN website to view their list of community appearances, please check the SD5 homepage at www.sd5.b.ca. Tickets to the Tomson Highway presentation are available at the Key City Theatre and are free of charge. Presentation begins at 7 p.m. For inquiries into the Humanity Network, please contact Amy Cross at amycross@thehumanitynetwork.ca

irst there was Black Friday. Businesses tried to entice us into their stores by promising us great deals. These days, we are told that it’s called “black” because this is the time at which businesses finally turned a profit for the year. A little research shows that this name is quite a recent phenomenon. It seems to have started in the 1950’s when factory managers called it “Black Friday” because so many employees phoned in sick after the American Thanksgiving blowout on Thursday. The current understanding is quite a successful attempt of rebranding! But it’s not my intention to moan about the consumerist impulse of this weekend. After all, no one forces any of us to go shopping. Then came Cyber Monday, created by marketing strategists trying to lure people to shop online on the Monday after Black Friday. This is even more recent—it didn’t start until 2005. I was amused to see Canadian Tire ads inviting us to come in on Red Thursday. There seems to be no end to marketers finding creative ways to draw us into their stores. What started me going on this was a television ad I saw about something called “GivingTuesday” (without the space). I had never heard of it before, so I went to the website (givingtuesday.ca) to check it out. It’s on the Tuesday after Black Friday, which falls on December 2 this year.

The home page invites us to “Imagine a day dedicated to giving back … around the world, across Canada and in your own community! Just as Black Friday kicks off the holiday shopping season, GivingTuesday is the opening day of the giving season.” That caught my interest immediately. I believe very deeply that being generous is a deep and profound part of what it means to be human. We don’t live out what it means to be a human being unless we give. That’s not Rev. Yme just a theological statement, Woensdregt although that’s certainly where it started for me. That statement is also backed up by increasing numbers of studies which are showing that generous people are happier and lead more fulfilled lives than those who are not generous. The website goes on to say that “GivingTuesday is a global day of giving. After the sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, GivingTuesday is a time to celebrate and encourage activities that support charities and non–profits. Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering time, helping a neighbour or spreading the word, GivingTuesday is a movement for everyone who wants to give something back.” GivingTuesday began only two years ago in the US, and came to Canada last year. Various polling groups wondered whether it made any difference at all. They discovered that Canadian online giving

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

increased by anywhere from 91% (CanadaHelps) to 421% (Blackbaud, a provider of nonprofit software and services). The more I surfed the website, the more excited I got. “Giving is a lifelong commitment, and a giving day is a special celebration, a reminder to all of us to think of others and our communities as well as ourselves … GivingTuesday is more than a moment, it’s a movement.” The website provides lots of help to people who are looking to increase their happiness by giving. It suggests ways to get involved; it allows us to search for specific charities; it provides links to different organizations; it helps us find out about the “First Time Donor’s Super Credit,” which was announced in the 2013 federal budget (which gives you an amazing tax credit for being a first time donor). The best thing of all is that anyone can get involved—individuals, families, companies, groups, organizations. The website provides all kinds of resources. The thing that really caught my attention in that television ad I mentioned was the tagline, “I dare you to give.” I have given to different charitable organizations my whole life long. It is a source of deep joy for me to be able to do that. So let me end with that same tagline: I dare you to give. I dare you to discover the joy that can be yours as you reach out beyond yourself to bless others in the same way you’ve been blessed. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

‘Scratchers’

My name is Fuji (in the tattoo world). I am an apprenticed tattooer that works in a licensed shop in Calgary. I moved to Cranbrook two years ago and I purchased a home that was zoned commercial with the intention of opening half of it as a licensed tattoo and piercing facility. After only months of living in Cranbrook I realized your town has a super serious issue with what we like to call “scratchers” who work out of their basements and kitchens with no responsibilities and or restrictions due to their ignorance to the laws and health boards, even if they claim to work in their so called sterile environments (my last count

was 25). My question is this. I myself have moved on to Calgary due to not having enough clientele to survive as have others I know. I still live and own in Cranbrook so I commute to work five days a week but others, like Conner, Pin Up, and the other few legit tattoo shops around town still have to pay their bills, pay the city, honor the codes, jump through hoops and believe it or not feed themselves in the process. To many, you see tattooing as an easy trade, a quick way out or just simple and fun, not really a job, I know this because many people I know have what they call “real” jobs. For a week I’d like to see you step into our shoes.

My point is this trade is absolutely the most challenging trade I have been involved in. Yes, I carry two red seals amongst my years of experience. My question is, when is Cranbrook going to have enough respect for its struggling legitimate small business owners and operators that it will enforce the laws in place that are at their disposal to clean up the illegitimate scratcher tattoo facilities around town and create both more work for the licensed people and make room for those colleagues of mine to hire and grow ? Step up Cranbrook your state of blissful ignorance is a complete insult . Fuji, Under The Gun Ink, Calgary and Cranbrook resident

The Kootenay Central Railway: Part II

JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

has been over a month since last we left Dr. Hugh Watt — physician and politician of Fort Steele — campaigning to have a new railway built. It was to be called the Kootenay Central Railway and, perhaps most importantly to Dr. Watt and numerous others, the tracks would pass through Fort Steele, a town on the decline ever since the CPR bypassed it in favour of Cranbrook. Let us recap what has happened to this point in our tale. Nothing. (Which may cause some to wonder at the purpose of the previous article, but that is not important now. That was past history. This is 1901. Always look ahead.) Let us look back. A petition, signed by Hugh Watt, M.D., N. Wallinger, J. Laidlaw, A.C. Nelson and 44 others of Fort Steele, arrived at the B.C. Parliament in early 1901. It was for the power to construct, equip, operate and maintain a line of railway for the carrying of freight and passengers from Elko (or a point nearby) to Fort Steele, and thence on to the town of Golden. It also included the power to expropriate lands for the purposes of the Kootenay Central Railway Company, and all other usual rights, which were many and varied. The petition was duly granted in June ,1901 (it would be extended twice more over the years), the vital first step for the fledgling company. It was a logical plan. The CPR had the Trans-Canada line running to the north and the Crow’s Nest line to the south, but nothing joining them. Coal, goods and passengers along the southern route were required to travel to Calgary and back through B.C., via Golden and Kamloops, in order to reach the west coast. Travelling

Colvalli, the southernmost depot of the Kootenay Central (photo 1920s, J. H. Cameron)

The proposed route and town sites of the CPR – Kootenay Central Railway – Herald, Oct. 5, 1911 to the coast from the states of Washington or Idaho, required a three day journey: a train ride to Nelson, a boat at Slocan Lake, a train to Nakusp, a boat to Arrowhead and a train to Revelstoke and beyond. Furthermore, the construction of the KCR would open up almost 200 miles of mining, lumbering and agricultural land between the U.S. border and Golden. What was needed was the money for construction. Enter Clement Hungerford Pollen. C. H. Pollen was a pedigreed En-

glishmen of considerable means. A “gentleman engineer” by trade, he was 32 years of age at the time, having come to the area in 1897, during construction of the Crow’s Nest railway. He farmed at Ta-Ta Creek and later lived and maintained an office in both Cranbrook and Fort Steele at various times and, to the elation of many, took a decided interest in the KCR, replacing Dr. Watt as president of the company by 1903. There were other investors, of course, a conglomerate from

England, apparently, but the company still required some serious aid from both the Dominion (Federal) and Provincial Governments in order to undertake construction, and herein began the dance. Nearly a decade later Mr. Pollen, upon reflection, stated, “It would have been inconsistent with western precedent had the Kootenay Central gone through its promotion in a course of easy stages. It has had its share of obstacles.” Aside from raising funds, the initial task was to undertake the surveying of the proposed route, which began in 1903. The buying and selling of real estate along the proposed line began shortly thereafter and the promises of the date of construction — well, they began in 1901, and carried on for many, many years. It was thought to commence early in 1903, in the autumn of 1904, the spring of 1905, and so on and so on and so on. Many well-known local dignitaries lobbied the government in order to gain support. It seemed things were always looking up but nothing really ever happened. The Cranbrook City Council and Board of Trade did their best in the hopes that the southern depot of the KCR would be located in Cranbrook.

Long & winding road Ice head to Pacific Northwest for first time since 2012-13 season Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

It has been a while since the Kootenay Ice made the more-than 800 kilometre trek to the Pacific Northwest, but that’s where the team heads in hopes of building upon its recent road success. “It’s a long ways to go, so that makes it difficult,” said Kootenay Ice alternate captain Austin Vetterl Wednesday prior to practice. “You’re not used to playing in those buildings. They’re not familiar and of course, those States teams are always good as well.” The Ice remain 3-90-0 away from Western Financial Place, but head coach Ryan McGill is looking at a smaller, more recent sample size for his team’s road performance. “It has been difficult away [from home]. But since Sam [Reinhart], [Tim Bozon] and everybody has been together in their right spots, we’ve won our last two road games in, for sure, one tough building in Medicine Hat,” McGill said referencing his team’s shutout of the Tigers and 4-2 defeat of Lethbridge (Nov. 15). “Going into the States isn’t easy. It’s a little different. We only play them once a year and we’re not used to that. I think what we have to do is we have to not worry about the other team. We have to

worry about ourselves. I think our guys have done a good job of worrying about themselves the last six, seven, eight games.” The Ice open the trip with a Friday-afternoon matinee against the surging Portland Winterhawks. “They’re very skilled,” said Kootenay Ice forward Matt Alfaro Wednesday. “They have [Nic] Petan, [Chase] De Leo and guys like that. We’ve got to shut them down.” Petan, a 2013 second-round selection of the Winnipeg Jets (43rd overall), is third in scoring for the Winterhawks with four goals and 25 points. De Leo, a 2014 fourth-round pick of the Jets (99th overall) is second in team scoring with 15 goals and 30 points. After losing six consecutive games and digging a deep hole in the

U.S. Division to open the regular season, the Winterhawks are 7-2-01 in their last 10 games, pulling back into the U.S. Division race. Sound familiar? After dropping seven consecutive games over the last two weeks of October, the Ice are 8-2-0-0 in their previous 10 outings as they battle back into the Central Division mix. On top of that, the Ice have only lost one game in the month of November, going 8-1-00. Vetterl has experienced this kind of turnaround before and knows what the outcome was the last time this team went through it. During the 2012-13 campaign, the Ice started the season 4-13-0-0, before pushing back to eventually finish 35-352-0 and in the WHL playoff picture. Vetterl arrived during the midst

From where we’ve come from at the start to now, all things are pointed in the right direction. “Two years ago when I got here, everything was in disarray. I don’t think we were buying in. We started to buy in and we started to win. It’s the same this year. I don’t think we were buying in at the start of the year. Now we’ve all bought in, so I think that’s the biggest thing to preach to the young guys and everyone new here or old here. If we buy into the system and play our way, we’re

We’ve got to prove that to a lot of people out there.” In addition to buying into the system of head coach Ryan McGill, the Ice have started getting some additional secondary scoring from guys not named Reinhart, Bozon, Luke Philp

or Jaedon Descheneau. Sunday afternoon in a 7-3 win over the Moose Jaw Warriors, Alfaro centred the team’s third line, flanked by Jon Martin and Levi Cable. The trio combined for four goals in a third-period comeback victory. “We know the top two lines are going to get points here and there,” Alfaro said Wednesday. “To really win games in the third [period] and close games, the third and fourth lines have to contribute a lot. “We’ve had some chemistry. Last year we played a couple times together and it kind of just clicked again. We know where each other is going to be and we work hard.” Alfaro chipped in

with a goal and two assists, while Martin grabbed one goal and three helpers. Cable sent two pucks to the back of the net, earning one assist as well. Provincial playoff picture set at Mount Baker Girls 4A volleyball round robin in the books

Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

With round-robin action in the books, the playoff picture is set at the 2014 4A B.C. Girls Provincial Volleyball Championships. Cranbrook’s Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS) will face a tough test as they take on the tournament’s topranked Argyle Secondary School Pipers in the first round of playoff action Friday at 10 a.m. (Court 1, MBSS). The MBSS Wild battled hard but fell into fourth place in Pool D after losing three matches to Lord Tweedsmuir

Secondary (20-25, 2729), Handsworth Secondary (18-25, 25-17, 6-15) and Oak Bay High (27-29, 18-25). With third place in Pool D on the line Thursday afternoon, the Wild and Oak Bay High School Breakers went back-andforth in a tightly-contested opening set. After falling behind late in the set, the Breakers stormed back to steal a 29-27 nail-biter from the Wild. Needing a second-set win to push the match to a third and decisive set, the Wild came up empty-handed as Oak Bay maintained its first-set momentum en route to a 25-18 victory.

In Pool A, the topranked Argyle Secondary School Pipers took first place after rolling to three straight-set victories. In their closest match of the day, the Pipers edged the Earl Marriott Mariners, who finished second in Pool A after defeating Terry Fox Secondary School and Mount Boucherie Secondary School. The Terry Fox Secondary School Ravens, claimed third in Pool A with a straight-sets triumph (25-14, 25-17) over the Mount Boucherie Secondary School Bears, who rounded out Pool A in fourth. She is sometimes a little shaky in the morning time and when walking around she staggers a little but by the afternoon she is back to normal. Her reflexes are good and she still can jump and climb. Tinkerbell is very affectionate and cuddly and loves to be held. She gets along good with other cats and would be okay in a home with a dog who will not bother her.

I need a home. WINX is a handsome brown tabby, he has short hair and is neutered and up to date on vaccinations. He is around 3 years old and came to our shelter as a stray. Winx is very happy and friendly, but he is adventurous and likes to roam. He would like a home where he could spend some time outdoors as well as coming inside. Winx will make a great mouser and also a very friendly companion.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Sometimes there are too many choices on your plate. You easily could feel this way today, and these opportunities keep coming in. You finally might have to say “no” to several options. You have a lot to consider because of recent developments. Tonight: Not to be found. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A last-minute burden could mar your morning. Others count on your ability to handle hassles and keep the peace. Unfortunately, a partner could feel put off by one of your choices. Let it pass; he or she will adjust. Tonight: Invite friends over for leftovers. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Reach out to someone at a distance. The news you hear could be quite interesting, but you still might be surprised by it. You could be fielding calls and adapting your plans for a good part of the day. Use the daytime hours to do some shopping. Tonight: Out and about.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Be sensitive to a friend or partner who often offers to help you a lot. You could be dragging from the recent pace and need a timeout. Make it OK to say “no” to invitations from loved ones for now. Keep reaching out to someone at a distance. Tonight: Read between the lines. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Your enthusiasm is hard to dissipate, yet a family member still might find a way to rain on your parade. As a result, you could withdraw. A close loved one is likely to make a gesture soon enough. Recognize where you might have overreacted. Tonight: With a favorite person. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You seem to have a lot of ground that you need to cover quickly. Some of you will be working, while others will be snacking on leftovers and shopping Black Friday deals. You might be happy not to be around the hectic pace. Tonight: Go along with a friend’s request. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Keep reaching out to a child or

Tundra

loved one who delights in your company. Ask more questions about a money matter. If you feel as if you are being given an unfair offer, just say so. A little upheaval might be necessary to clear the air. Tonight: Off to the gym. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Tension builds, and you see no way around what is happening. Take a deep breath, go out and take a walk. Work on detaching as much as possible before making any decisions. You could be making a judgment that might not be valid. Tonight: Cut loose with a loved one. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) A conversation could open a door to more opportunities. The person with whom you are speaking seems to have the ability to think outside the box. Use his or her natural abilities to help you structure a new path. Curb any negativity. Tonight: Lounge around at home. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Be careful with whom you choose to let in close enough to have knowledge of your

many assets. Your friends could seem as though they are snubbing you, but they actually just might be busy with various Thanksgiving activities. Tonight: Meet a pal at a favorite haunt. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll be all smiles in the morning, especially as a loved one or potential sweetie can’t seem to get enough of you. Enjoy the moment! A boss or older friend could be very difficult to deal with. Ignore his or her flak, yet remain gracious. Tonight: Make it your treat. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might feel somewhat unresponsive in the morning. Take a nap, and you will come back feeling energized and ready to throw yourself into the moment. Someone could disclose some important information. Keep it hush-hush for now. Tonight: Be a social butterfly. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I have had a best friend for nearly 20 years. However, in the past six or seven years, “Gloria” has become very self-absorbed and selfish. She refuses to show any reciprocity for favors or kindnesses. She seems to have time only for doctors, workouts and different physical therapies. She says she wants others to take care of her and threatens to hurt herself if she doesn’t get enough attention. Gloria says she values my friendship, but I guess it’s only when I am doing her a favor. I have decided that I’ve had enough and will break off all communication with her. Do I owe her an explanation, or should I simply be unavailable when she makes her once-a-month phone call? In the past, I’ve told her how she makes me feel, but she shrugs it off and does nothing. I don’t want to be mean, and I worry that telling her off would only make me feel better. What is the right thing to do? -- Soured on Her Friendship Dear Soured: Is Gloria well? If she spends all her time seeing doctors and getting physical therapy, it sounds as though she has medical issues. This, of course, does not excuse her from behaving like a caring human being, but it may explain why she is so self-involved. Since you are ready to terminate the friendship anyway, it would do no harm to ask Gloria about her health, and also let her know that her attitude has eroded the relationship. We hope she is willing to work on this. Dear Annie: I read with interest the letter from “J” about a remedy for seasickness. I had a similar experience that may be of interest to your readers. Years ago, I was a young Air Force officer in navigation school. I was on a training flight with instructors, two pilots and 12 students when we encountered severe turbulence. Almost immediately, you could see people turning green and starting to get sick. The pilot apologized for the turbulence, saying it would last a while, and if anyone was not feeling well, they should take a piece of newspaper and open their flight suit and stick the newspaper next to their stomach. He said it would “stabilize your body temperature.” Almost immediately, everyone grabbed a newspaper, opened their flight suits and pressed the paper next to their stomachs. We endured the turbulence for over 30 minutes, and not one person got sick. Whether it was a psychological ploy by the pilot or a valid solution, it worked. In over 4,000 hours of flying time, I have used this remedy now and then and have never gotten sick. Thought you might want to pass it along. -- Dave S. in Plattsmouth, Neb. Dear Dave: We’ve never heard of this, but if it works, we’re all for it. And it should keep printed newspapers in business. Winwin. Dear Annie: The letter from “Karyn,” the server who insists on calling her customers “honey” or “sweetie,” absolutely infuriated me. She said they love it and life is too short to worry about such things. Well, respect is eternal. Such familiarity has bothered me my whole life. I am not your honey or sweetie. It does not convey proper respect to someone who is paying good money to eat in your establishment. I also have always disliked being referred to as “you guys” when I’m dining with my husband, who will promptly smile at the server and say, “My wife is NOT a guy,” getting his point across without being a jerk about it. If Karyn has regular customers who don’t object to such names, fine. I have no problem with that. But please reconsider how you greet people you don’t know. Some of us take deep offense at this. I would never leave a smaller tip, but I would certainly think twice about returning. -- Melody Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Cranbrook’s Evah McKowan: ‘Janet of Kootenay’

Veni. Vidi. Purchaci.” So opens a novel about Janet Kirk — a lone women who is braving the wilds of the frontier.

Writing to a friend back home, the “I came; I saw; I bought;” opening refers to Kirk’s purchase of 80 acres of unfarmed land. The rest of the story explores issues of isolation, land settlement, independence, survival, romance, and the myth of the untamed west; typical themes for frontier fiction. The story of Janet Kirk however, is far from typical. In fact it is quite

BOOKNOTES

Mike Selby special. The parcel of land she buys is in Creston. The book’s author is from Cranbrook. The story is about our home. ‘Janet of Kootenay’ was first published in 1919, written by Evah McKowan. It is written is the epistolary style — a story told in a series of letters. ‘Dracula’ is perhaps the best known

book written in this style. (This type of writing is no easy feat — Jane Austen was defeated by it). Published by the firm of George H. Doran in New York, ‘Janet of Kootenay’ received glowing reviews in the ‘New York Times Book Review’, the ‘New York Tribune’, the ‘Atlanta Constitution’, and Philadelphia’s ‘Evening Public Ledger.’ Closer to home, the ‘Manitoba Free Press’ and the ‘Lethbridge Daily Herald’ strongly recommended it. Evah McKowan was born in 1885, the eldest of four daughters. In 1900 her father moved the entire family from Carlisle, Ontario, to Cranbrook, hoping to take advantage of the

Janus: The Kootenay Central Railway Part II Continued from page 1 By 1909, C.H. Pollen, still president, undertook the process of selling the company to the CPR. By early 1910, with the CPR at the helm, construction began on the southern end at a point known as Colvalli (near the eastern side of the present day Koocanusa Bridge), in order to connect with the line descending from Golden to the north. The town of Canal Flats slowly emerged, the town of Fort Steele continued to die. Finally, on December 28, 1914, after year of waiting, the Kootenay Central sent its first train into Fort Steele, too late, of course, as we know now, although, at the time, there was a great deal of jubilation in the little community. By 1915, the rail line was in regular use between Colvalli and Golden, Hugh Watt had been dead for almost a year and Clement Hungerford Pollen was a major in the 54th Battalion, fighting a war in Europe. He

would eventually reach the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and die in 1934, in Surrey, England. The CPR-KCR remained in constant use. In 1962, the CPR undertook reconstruction of the line, bringing in crushed rock from the Sullivan mine at Kimberley, in order to widen the right-of-way, thus permitting the laying of heavier rails in order to handle heavier loads. Although the former Kootenay Central Railway line remains in regular use today, the end of an era was marked in May, 1962, when the tired, old KCR passenger coach, in use for 47 years, was quietly retired in Cranbrook. Heated by a pot-bellied stove and lit by a coal oil lantern, the coach and its twin had travelled up and down the line since January, 1915, but no-one wanted to ride the train anymore. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

new lumber boom. The teenage McKowan took a job teaching at Kimberley’s North Star Mining School until 1903, when she began to teach regularly in Cranbrook. In July of 1908 she married Harry McKowan, one of the owners of Cranbrook Sash & Door. The happy couple soon had three daughters, which they raised in their home at 31710th Avenue South (which still exists.) Unfortunately any details about writing ‘Janet of Kootenay’ are lost to history. A study of McKowan conducted by S. Leigh Mathews for her Early Canadian Women Writers series also came up short of facts. Although Mathews interviewed all nine of McKowan’s grandchildren, none of them knew any details concerning the creation of ‘Janet.’ She was simply “Grandma,” and not a famous writer. McKowan did write a series of articles about writing, and one gives a clue as to what may have gave her the writing bug. In a 1922 article for the ‘Manitoba Free Press’ she confessed

that “it is almost impossible to gaze at the mountains glowing like living coals in the sunset; to follow a mountain trial when the tamaracks and cottonwoods are touched with the yellow of autumn … without wanting — as my little girl once put it — to tell the world about it.” The success of ‘Janet of Kootenay’ led to the follow up novel ‘Graydon of the Windermere,’ which appeared in 1920. Similar to ‘Janet,’ this new book has a former Toronto parson beginning a new life in the majestic Windermere Valley. Advertisements and flyers promised readers a third novel, but one never appeared. Reasons for this are also lost to history. McKowan was no slouch though. Not only did she take over Cranbrook Sash and Door after her husband died, but she ran the BC Chapter of the Canadian Authors Association, the Cranbrook Women’s Institute, the Cranbrook Girls in Training, the Canadian Society for the Control of Cancer is

Cranbrook, and the Creston Valley Ladies’s Liberal Association. She also played numerous sports and was an avid painter. She also may have written the great Canadian novel. ‘Janet of Kootenay’ is an awesome start to our very own literary heritage. (Full disclosure: my great grandfather Charles Selby worked

for McKowan’s husband at Cranbrook Sash and Door. Oddly, no one in my family ever mentioned Evah McKowan or her books. Of course there is also the real possibility that they did and I wasn’t listening. Although she passed away five years before I was born, I like to think her third book was called ‘Mike of Cranbrook.’)
