Getting into the

HOLIDAY

Spirit

Mission Healthcare Auxiliary volunteers Marie (left) and Justine helped set up The Cottage Thrift Store on First Avenue for the Christmas season. The holiday season is just around the corner. Millions of people around the world will be celebrating Christmas with family and friends, and will be thinking about others in their community a little bit more. Whether it’s writing greeting cards, decorating your home, or humming a holiday tune, everyone has their own unique way of getting into the Christmas spirit. In Mission, traces of the holiday can be seen on colourful wreaths on doors and bright lights that shine in the night. There are numerous special events throughout the community to celebrate the occasion. Lifetime Learning Centre Society is hosting a Christmas Tea on Dec. 3. This annual event is open to everyone and runs from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost to attend is by donation. There will be a Christmas Dinner on Dec. 17 at Lifetime Learning Centre Society, 32444 Seventh Avenue. There will be turkey and all the fixings.

The lunch runs from 12 to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed for both events. If you would like to help, or for more information call 604-820-0220. Christmas events at Chartwell Cedarbrook Chateau run throughout December. There are crafting events on numerous days and there will be carolling in the courtyard on Dec. 14. Everyone is welcome. St. Paul’s Presbyterian Youth Choir will sing for residents on Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. Some give back to their community by volunteering their time. At The Cottage Thrift Store, run by the Mission Healthcare Auxiliary, volunteers have already decorated the shop and lined the shelves with Christmas ornaments, outfits, and unique gifts for people on your list. Mission Community Services Society’s Christmas Bureau is also in need of volunteers. If you can help, call 604-826-3634.

A vision for Mission Seniors Mission is an ideal location for seniors to live — a community with affordable land values, great indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities, and a small community feeling. One of the amenities many Mission seniors are looking to is a new and expanded seniors centre which will retain and attract vibrant and engaged seniors in our community. The seniors centre envisioned is a multi-generational facility which will be a focal point for activities serving to build on social and cultural assets that seniors bring to Mission. Programs would be augmented by providing health, benefit, pension, income tax, and access to community services to seniors. The centre would focus on seniors. With most, but not all, senior activities occurring during the day, evenings would see seniors, youth and community organizations utilizing the facility for meetings, educational programs (such as computer training) and social activities that span the generations.

It could provide an opportunity for young and old to mix, share experiences, and generate common understandings through programs such as “adopt a grandparent”, as well as numerous learning experiences. Space would be available for seniors to socialize, watch hockey games, read, play cards, and other evening activities. A commercial kitchen would provide the ability to operate a lunch program, launch a kitchen training program, as well as catering to evening activities booked into the facility. The operating model would have the facility owned by the District of Mission and operated by the Mission Seniors Centre Association. The centre would be part of a mixed use development which includes market affordable condominiums, rental units, and subsidized rental units for seniors above the seniors centre. It is an exciting vision for the future of Mission seniors and will be a major contribution to the wellbeing of our community. Seniors provide a lifetime of experience

and expertise. The seniors centre would offer an opportunity to bridge generational gaps and bring together people of all ages in a facility that offers a vast array of activities for all to share. Our vision for an inclusive, multi-generational activity centre for seniors is very much in tune

with the October 2014 United Nations International Day of Older Persons, the theme of which is “Leaving No One Behind: Promoting a Society for All.” Submitted by Bob Ingram

Why I Chose Cedar Valley Manor Initially I decided to buy a suite at Cedar Valley Manor because a friend of mine, who thinks things through very carefully, had already bought a suite. My friend was attracted to the simplicity of life at Cedar Valley Manor as well as the safety and security associated with the ongoing involvement of a trusted, community based non-profit organization with a long track record in providing high quality housing for seniors in Mission. And MASH, the Mission Association for Seniors Housing, which owns Cedar Valley Manor as well as The Cedars, was just that organization! We both loved the idea of never having to worry about the roof over our heads, the yard, or our

appliances ever again. If anything goes wrong with any of them, MASH will repair or replace them. I was also very attracted to the idea that life will be easier for my kids too – I don’t want them to have to worry about me - and now that I am living in a community of friends and neighbours with lots of support around, they won’t have to. Plus, in 10 years when I will be 75, who knows what might happen? If it ever comes to the point where I can’t drive not only will I have this great community, there’s also a bus stop right outside. Just constructed, I love the fact that everything at Cedar Valley Manor is brand new. Though there are still a few teething issues with a couple things,

the people here have been fantastic in making sure everything is (or soon will be) just as I had pictured it. The simplicity of the life lease is something else that really appealed to me at Cedar Valley Manor. Not wanting to continue to play the real estate game, here I get to know that my interests are protected, and that MASH is looking out for me. It makes me feel at ease, so I can focus on the things I want to for the rest of my life! Cedar Valley Manor really is the place that I’ve been waiting for. My other friends here feel the same way too, and they just love it. One of my friends said she was in seventh heaven! Gail Brunsch, Long time Mission resident.

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off. How it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle. Look for the solution in next month’s puzzle section of Living 55 Plus.

Enjoy the freedom of

Dental Implants These people have something to smile about. They used to wear dentures, which caused discomfort, an inability to eat many foods and a lack of condence when it came to smiling and talking. Now they enjoy the freedom of NobelSmile dental implants, which are as close to natural teeth as you can get. People who lose a tooth want to replace it with something permanent, says Dr. Lui, instead of something they have to remove. “Once you give someone new, permanent teeth, you can see their personality shine through again.”
