This flatdeck truck wowed the Truck Light Parade viewers Friday night as the annual procession of lit up trucks and other vehicles kicked off the Christmas retail season in Campbell River. See page 4 for more pictures.

The Rivercorp board of directors has decided to move forward without its chief executive officer. Vic Goodman is leaving the municipal economic development corporation, a lightning rod for criticism during last month’s municipal election campaign and frequently criticized for a lack of visible results. But none of that was touched on in an announcement released Monday. “Vic Goodman has led Campbell River’s economic development corporation since the summer of 2011, and his work has supported many initiatives that have enhanced our community and region by promoting local economic advantages to businesses, investors and visitors,” says Rivercorp vice-chairman Bruce Woytuik. “We recognize how fortunate we have been to have had the benefit of Vic’s experience and dedication, and we all extend our thanks and our best wishes to Vic for the Continued on Pg. 5

he said at the time, feminism had “ruined his life.” In 1991, the Parliament of Canada established Dec. 6 as the National Day of Remembrance for these women. Gloria Jackson, Coordinator of Community Based Victim Services with the Campbell River Family Services Society (CRFS), says society in general has come a long way in terms of genderbased violence since then, but we’ve still got a long way to go. “I’d like to think that it is changing. I’d like to think that we have made some headway over the last 30 years,” she says, citing the current situations of celebrities accused of violence being held accountable by the public in ways they may not have been before. “(Jian) Ghomeshi, and (Ray) Rice, and Bill Cosby just wouldn’t have been talked about 30 years ago,” she says, “so things are changing.

They responded to 90 sexual assault situations. The currently accepted estimates, according to Jackson, say that approximately one quarter of

all domestic violence situations and one tenth of sexual assaults are reported to the police. That means there were possibly upwards of 1,700 domestic violence altercations and 900 sexual assaults in our community last year. “It’s definitely still something we need to work on in our community, in our country, in

Step up if you see it happening around you. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is a global initiative running from

Nov. 25 to Dec. 10, culminating with International Human Rights Day, which, according to Jackson, is extremely fitting. “This issue,” Jackson says, “is about being respectful to other people. It’s about men respecting women. It’s about women respecting men. It’s about respectful relationships. Everybody,

Rolling out the holiday cheer

The Downtown BIA’s annual Big Truck Parade rolled through Campbell River last Friday night. Hundreds gathered downtown in sub-zero temperatures to watch trucks of all shapes and sizes show off their lights and other festive decorations. The parade started on the Island Highway at the bottom of Rockland Road and continued on along the Highway and down Shopper’s Row, before winding up at Spirit Square.

Here’s to shopping in person

Erika (left) and Pirkko Anderson of Coho Books welcomed customers to Campbell River’s first Cider Monday with cups of warming cider. A number of downtown businesses decided to take up the Cider Monday cause in response to the more widespread Cyber Monday, a day that sees a surge in shopping online. Cider Monday emphasizes the point that small businesses and the community benefit more from people going out to shop at local retailers, rather than sitting at their computers. Plus, this week you would have received charming smiles and tasty hot apple cider.

Our View

It’s the season of shopping and giving Well, the Christmas retail season is officially underway what with Friday’s spectacular Truck Light Parade followed by Starlight We say: As the Shopping. buying frenzy It was bitterly cold Friday with a takes hold so, too, biting wind driving frigid air. But it didn’t “dampen” spirits as definitely one does the giving of the best Truck Light Parades went off without a hitch. So, now we settle into the Christmas period in earnest not only because shopping becomes a priority in our

lives but also because the giving season begins too. Many charities are at work during the build up to Christmas what with Angel Trees, Kettle Campaigns, Hamper Funds and, of course, the Mirror’s own Pennies for Presents. All of these charity efforts are valuable contributors to the needy in our community and the work done by a whole range of community organizations is to be commended. The pattern of shopping and giving going hand in hand in our community is well established. And kudos to Campbell Riverites who support these many worthwhile campaigns. Our region has pulled through some tough

times in recent years and although there’s been no powerful rebound, we are hanging in there. This is a good time of the year to reflect on the good things we have as we remember those amongst us who don’t have it as good. Keep supporting local charities, they do good work. As you whittle away at your shopping list keep your local shops in mind as well. This week’s Cider Monday put on by downtown stores serves as a reminder that they are a big part of our community too and deserve your support as well.

INFILM facts weren’t sterling

Re: Sterling observations (Mirror, Nov. 26) While Mr. Campbell’s opinion is clearly based on his belief or view, it is regrettable that with some due diligence on his part he could have been provided with verifiable facts upon which to form his opinions. In Mr. Sterling’s view Vancouver Island North Film Commission (INFILM) is lacking in due diligence. The fact of the matter is INFILM provides due diligence through contract deliverables with all its financial supporters. Not only are our services and deliverables reviewed by Rivercorp but by all eight of our funding partners. Mr. Sterling inquires “why isn’t Comox Valley paying a share”. In fact INFILM has a five year funded service contract with the Comox Valley Regional District currently committed until 2019, as well as agreements with the City of Nanaimo through the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District, the Town of Qualicum Beach, the Province of British Columbia through Creative BC and ongoing funded projects with the Nanaimo Regional District and the City of Port Alberni Economic Development office. Finally, Mr. Sterling is “concerned that we are not getting full value for our tax commitment.” I offer the following facts enclosed in the 2013 annual report to Rivercorp: INFILM facilitated 98 location requests in 2013; 20 of those productions received packages featuring the Campbell River Region; 10 of those productions were based out of Campbell River; $556,000 in local economic impact for 2013; $55,348,060 total accumulated economic impact to Campbell River up to and including 2013. Stephanie Tipple, President, INFILM

Nisga’a Nation proves their critics wrong

Tom Fletcher B.C. Views

It has been 15 years since I wrote a commentary objecting to the B.C. government pushing aside its own hardwon treaty process to reach an unprecedented land-and-cash settlement with the Nisga’a Nation for their ancient Nass River territory. My objection, and that of many others, was the imposition of a parallel state with collectively owned land enshrined for all time. This was an ailing NDP government rushing to enable a property ownership system that has demonstrated little but failure and suffering around the world. The Nisga’a are proving me wrong, and this was again demonstrated at a littlenoticed ceremony at the B.C. legislature last week.

The B.C. government had just passed amendments to allow a gas pipeline through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park, the first co-managed provincial park in B.C. history. Another bill enabled the Nisga’a Lisims government to impose industrial property tax on liquefied natural gas production. Legal documents were signed so the Nisga’a legislature can do the same this week. In recent years, the Nisga’a disposed of concern about collective land restrictions by adopting a private property system. And Supreme Court of Canada decisions have repeatedly answered protests about the establishment of a parallel state – that’s what it is, so get used to it. The Nisga’a have moved to assemble

four fee-simple tidewater sites for LNG terminals, joining the Haisla Nation at Kitimat in reaching aggressively for a modern economy through gas export. The Nisga’a have partnered with TransCanada Corp. on a 900-km pipeline to supply the $11-billion LNG project led by Petronas for the Prince Rupert port. And they don’t intend to stop there. “We want to be part of the Canadian business establishment,” said former Nisga’a Nation president Joe Gosnell. The signing ceremony was briefly disrupted by one of a small group of Vancouver-based Nisga’a who have been using modern protest tactics against this decision. We weren’t consulted, it’s a desecration of victims of a volcanic eruption, it’s a threat to eelgrass beds, and

so forth, say well-rehearsed young men with video cameras running. Nisga’a President Mitchell Stevens has patiently and repeatedly explained that Nisga’a legislature rules were relaxed to allow every hereditary chief to speak to elected leaders on this pivotal move. After that it received the required twothirds majority support. Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who carried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, moved slowly with the help of an ornately carved cane to speak at a reception. He seemed genuinely surprised that he has lived long enough to see the fruits of generations of labour. In 2000, when the treaty received royal assent in Ottawa, Gosnell took part in a ceremonial burning of the Indian Act.

Tag an angel before Sunday Reporter

With four more days left until the Angel Tree comes down, there are still more than one hundred tags left on the tree. The tags have the names of Campbell River children, from ages between birth to 18-years-old, in need this holiday season. The Downtown BIA’s Angel Tree project relies on the generosity of people in the community to pull a tag from the tree and purchase what they can of the child’s wants and needs that are listed on the tag. The gifts are then returned to the Angel Tree – which is located in the lobby of the Discovery Inn – wrapped by volunteers, and delivered in time for Christmas. Dawn Hamilton, who has been co-ordinating the Angel Tree for the last six years, said every year there is “a bit of

panic” around the halfway mark when there are still around half of the tags left on the tree. This year, of the 346 tags available, 186 tags had been taken as of Tuesday morning when the Mirror went to press. That left 160 tags still remaining. Hamilton noted that the amount of kids with tags is up this year over last. The kids whose names appear on the tags were selected for the Angel Tree by several local social agencies whose case workers put the children’s names forward. The age of the child is then transferred on to a tag and the cards specify the basic needs of the child such as toiletries and diapers for the babies and items such as jackets, socks and underwear. The wants are typically toys, colouring books, or games, but vary depending upon the

Chopper flies in to aid Elk Falls Suspension Bridge project KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The much-anticipated suspension bridge over Elk Falls canyon is one step closer to completion. Last Friday, a helicopter flew in the four

anchors that will hold the suspension bridge in place. The chopper brought the large towers in one by one and each piece was lowered down onto the rocks above the canyon where construction crews awaited their arrival.

The bridge, a project of the Campbell River Rotary Club, has been delayed because of evolving plans and the precision needed to drill into the rocks to anchor the bridge. Lorrie Bewza, president of the Rotary Club

and suspension bridge project chair, said Friday that the bridge – expected to be complete in the fall – could be finished sometime in early 2015. Bewza is hoping it will be open by spring. Once complete, the suspension bridge will stretch 64 metres long and hang 60 metres above Elk Falls. There will also be two new viewing platforms on either side of the bridge. The first platform as users come off the new trail between Elk Falls and the new 80-stall Elk Falls parking lot, will be wheelchair accessible and offer a front facing view of the falls. “The elevated walkway and stairs will connect from the start of the suspension bridge to an elevated and cantilevered viewing platform that will give visitors a direct view of Elk Falls from the top all the way down to the canyon floor,” Bewza told the Mirror in September. “This view will be spectacular.” The project is being

m a d e p o s s i bl e by $124,500 in funding from the Campbell River Rotary Club, $150,000 from BC Hydro, as well as a federal government grant for $86,650. The project has also received a grant from Island Coastal Economic Trust, funded by the provincial government, in the amount of $325,000. Bewza said Rotary has received “exceptional support and assistance from BC Hydro” over the past five years the group has been working on the suspension bridge project. Hydro, which has been working in the area on the John Hart Generating Station Replacement project, has provided Rotary with copies of topographical and geotechnical reports which Bewza said saved the Rotary Club time and money. Above, a helicopter flies in the first of four towers to anchor the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge. Below, construction crews on the Elk Falls Suspension Bridge project secure one of the bridge’s four towers that were dropped off via helicopter above Elk Falls Canyon on Friday. A

s a high school student, singersongwriter Georgina Nicoll performed regularly around Campbell River as a member of the young Celtic band The Island Girls. Now, after traveling the world, earning two university degrees, and generally living life to the fullest, she has recorded her first solo

album, and is coming home for a CD release concert on Saturday, Dec. 6, 7:30 PM, at the Little Red Church in Comox (2182 Comox Ave). Nicoll’s style is a blend of folk and pop, featuring vocals and piano with guest musicians on cello, drums, and backup vocals. Her poetic lyrics flow through memorable melodies and carefully crafted arrangements, and her natural, engaging stage presence draws the audience in to the stories her songs relate. Special guest for this performance is local

singer, songwriter and fiddler extraordinaire Ali Romanow, who will open the evening with a showcase of her own original compositions. Nicoll is certainly no stranger to the stage. As well as touring across Canada and Europe with The Island Girls, she has performed with choirs and musical theatre groups in Ontario, Alberta and BC. She is an alumni of Cantiamo Chamber Ensemble, and currently sings with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir. She has also written and arranged music for local choirs, including the Campbell

River Children’s Choir and Island Voices. She is now based in Victoria where she wrote and recorded the collection of original songs that make up her brand new album, titled “A Little Courage”. Tickets for Saturday’s concert are $15, available at Bop City Records (211 Simms St. in Courtenay), at the door (cash only), or online at www. GeorginaNicoll.ca. Also visit this website to hear samples of Georgina’s music and order the album, or download her songs from cdbaby.com, iTunes, Amazon and GooglePlay.

Logan’s pair lifts Storm past Kings Connor Logan scored twice, including the game winner in the third period, to power the Campbell River Storm to a 3-2 win over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings Sunday night at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. With the victory the Storm claimed three out of a possible four points in their home-and-home series with the Kings. The Glacier Kings won 2-1 in overtime Saturday night on home ice. Logan snapped a 2-2 tie at 5:52 of the final stanza on Sunday with a two-on-one break set up by defenseman Devyn Grant. “I took the puck wide and heard Welshie (Tyler Welsh) calling for it. I tried to pass it across but it hit the defenseman’s skate and went in five-hole,” said Logan, who is now tied for the team lead in scoring with 36 points. “This was a huge win for us. They (Comox) have had our number a bit lately so we wanted to prove we are still top guns and I think we pulled it off tonight.” The contest remained scoreless through the first period and well into the second, thanks to outstanding goaltending by Jesse Michel of Campbell River and Comox Valley’s Blake Pearson. Logan finally broke the deadlock at 14:02 of the middle frame, sliding a shot under a sprawling Pearson. Ty Madden tied it less than two minutes later, but Gavin Rauser put the Storm back on

top with a short-handed marker after a beautiful setup by Gage Colpron. Liam Shaw equalized for the Glacier Kings with just 28 seconds left in the second period, setting the stage for Logan’s heroics in the final frame. Final shots on goal favoured the Storm, 37-25. With the win Campbell River increased their lead to eleven points over the second place Glacier Kings in the North Division standings, and also pulled back into a tie with the Victoria Cougars for first overall in the VIJHL. Both teams have 45 points after 26 games. Comox Valley won Saturday night’s game when Dylan Sampson scored ‘bar-down’ 46 seconds into overtime. Michael Olson notched the lone goal for the locals, an unassisted effort in the first period. It was another goalie’s dual between Michel and Pearson as the Storm outshot the Glacier Kings 36-19. This weekend also marked the debut of a couple of new additions to the Campbell River lineup – forward Daine Elphicke, acquired in a trade with the Princeton Posse of the KIJHL, and defenseman Trent Johnson, who played here most of last season. “It’s great to be back. I love it here and the fans are awesome,” said Johnson, who returned to the Storm after a stint in

New Hampshire. “These two games this weekend (against Comox) were like the playoffs, both decided by one goal and a lot of fun to play in.” Storm head coach Lee Stone was pleased with the effort from both of his new players. “Elphicke had a fantastic weekend. He’s phy s i c a l, f i n i s h i ng checks, blocking shots, and getting under the other team’s skin. He’s a playoff-style player,” Stone said, “Getting Trent (Johnson) back is really going to help our

power play. “He is exceptionally calm with the puck, exits the defensive zone really well, and just doesn’t turn it over very often.” The Storm continues their busy schedule with a road game in Victoria tonight (Wednesday) against the Westshore Wolves. They return home Friday for their annual ‘Teddy Bear Toss Night’ against the Oceanside Generals, before winding up the week in Courtenay, taking on the Glacier Kings one more time.

Silver medal at AAA Championships for Timberline Girls The Timberline Senior Girls Volleyball Team finished their great season with a Silver Medal at the AAA girls Championships in Parksville last week. The Wolves went through the round robin with straight-set victories over Hugh McRoberts (Richmond), Clayton Heights (Surrey) and Caledonia (Terrace). In the first round of the play-offs, Timberline faced Windsor of Vancouver, winning the best of five match in

three straight, which put the Wolves in the quarter-final match against Dover Bay. “My girls were on fire and Dover could not stop our attack,” said head coach Terry Philp. “Our season goal was to medal at the BC’s this year, so we knew we had to win just one more match to be guaranteed a medal,” after they beat Dover and advanced to the semi-final. That match would be against Little Flower Academy of Vancouver,

who Timberline beat in another straight-set victory and were on their way to the final versus South Delta. “Our game plan was to come out with the same kind of aggressive and emotionally charged play that had gotten us to that point,” said Philp. “We were so excited and emotional at achieving our goal,” Philp said. “We knew that we were in the final and had nothing to lose. All the pressure was on South Delta who was the num-

ber-one seed in the tournament.” Timberline took the first set of the final, but according to Philp, “after that, South Delta raised their game to a whole new level and won the next three sets. My girls battled hard, but they were simply better than us.” “We returned home with silver medals around our necks knowing we gave it our all. You can’t do more than that and I am thrilled with our result,” Philp said.

Fair Trade Global Market returns to Campbell River on Saturday Are you looking for a different shopping experience this Christmas season? Would you like the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of gift items that support producers in the developing world? You can do this and more without even leaving Campbell River. If you want to purchase items that will be appreciated, are a little bit different and won’t be forgotten when the holiday season is over, why not consider coming to the Fair Trade Global Market? This fun and festive event will be held in the

Timberline Secondary School gym on Saturday, Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Enjoy shopping for unique and beautiful items while supporting fair trade initiatives from around the world. This is the seventh year the market has been held at Timberline – the event has been well attended and continues to grow in popularity. Vendors who have attended in past years enjoy coming to Campbell River due to the support they have received for their products and services. This year, about 30 vendors will be be par-

ticipating in the market. They will be selling products from many different countries. Comercio Justo, a Cumberland based organization that promotes fair commerce in Guatemala will be returning again this year with quality woven textiles among other items. The always-popular Ten Thousand Villages store from Victoria will be back with a wonderful assortment of fair trade food products, unique Christmas ornaments and musical instruments as well as storybooks, cookbooks, jewelr y and scarves. Innovative

Communities will be selling bags, blankets and other interesting products from Nepal in support of their work in the village of Lachachowk. Canadian Women for Afghanistan, an organization that supports advancing education for Afghan women and their families will have pashminas and jewelry for sale. Bitengye Designers, a group of Ugandan widows and other women who support their families through sewing, will have a variety of products on hand. The C. R. Grandmothers to Grandmother

group will be at the market again this year. They will be selling a variety of items including “It’s a Wrap” reusable sandwich wrappers, wonder-

ful beaded bags, delicious baked goods and centerpieces made from seasonal greenery. Young people from Timberline’s Outdoor

Club will be helping throughout the day and will help with the clean up when it is over. Timberline students from the Foods program will prepare delicious goodies and proceeds from this will support school programs. Take a break from shopping and enjoy some delectable treats along with a hot cup of fair trade coffee or tea. This year, organizers are requesting a small donation at the door to help ensure that this great event can continue to come to Campbell River (no charge for children).

September 19, 1949 November 21, 2014 Lou, fondly referred to as Dr. Lou-Little by the guys at Long Hoh, was blessed to be surrounded by family, friends and his beloved pets when he decided to soar. We will miss him like crazy and felt honored to have been part of his life. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the Palliative Care doctor, the nursing team and his friends and golf buddies who checked in on and visited him. (You know who you are).
