Man charged with RCMP assault back in court The man charged with assaulting a police officer is awaiting his next court appearance. Ryan Kozuchar, 23, is back in provincial court March 30, 2015. The alleged incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. June 21, on the Barkerville Highway when police conducted a traffic stop of a suspected
impaired driver. The officer made the legal demand for the driver to provide a sample of his breath as part of the impaired driving investigation. The driver allegedly refused to provide the required breath sample and was advised that he was under arrest for refusing to provide a

breath sample. At this point, it is alleged that the then 67-year-old driver and his 23-year-old male passenger (Kozuchar) became combative and began striking the officer multiple times to the head. The police officer radioed for emergency backup. A second officer arrived on scene and came to his aid at which point
the suspects fled into a residence. Additional police personnel arrived quickly on scene and began tending to the injured officer while awaiting the arrival of BC Ambulance Services. The injured officer was transported to G.R. Baker Hospital where he was treated for non-

a.m. and arrested the two males with the assistance of the police dog. The 23-year-old male suspect sustained a minor laceration to his leg after he was bit by the police dog during the arrest. He was transported to G.R. Baker Hospital by police where he received three stitches to his wound.

Avalanche warnings in effect human-triggered avalanches remains. “The slow start to the winter, with cold temperatures and low snowfall, gave us a weak snowpack,” Avalanche Canada Public Avalanche Forecaster Joe Lammers said. “Now we’ve finally had a good storm and people are ready to ride. But all that new snow fell on a relatively fragile structure. This weekend there’s going
to be pent-up demand for powder snow. It will be essential to take things slow and exercise cautious decision making.” Recreational backcountry users are recommended to stick to simple, lowangle terrain, avoid big, steep slopes, minimize exposure to overhead hazard, and re-group in safe zones away from avalanche run-outs. Avalanche Canada issued a special public avalanche warning for the mountains of B.C.’s interior, including the North Rockies, Cariboos, North Columbia, South Columbia, Purcells, Kootenay Boundary, South Rockies and Lizard Range and Flathead. This warning applies to recreational backcountry users and remained in effect as of press time Tuesday. Heavy snow, strong winds and warm temperatures this week have resulted in high avalanche danger ratings across the regions. But the main concern is when the weather clears and the temperatures drop. The danger ratings will go down as natural avalanche activity decreases but the potential for large and destructive

Talk tax hikes and they will come
uring the election questions were asked of me – I said I would try to answer them. Not exactly sure where to start – the City of Quesnel has general taxation, where as the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) is a service provider to residents in its district. We have, as one person pointed out, firewalls between our services. I actually felt it was more a criticism as opposed to positive. I always liked the fact that we have firewalls. Regional District residents know what a service costs, i.e. fire protection. For instance, an area wants to have street lights so a circle is drawn around an area and the costs are identified; a question is then asked of residents within that boundary Are you in favour of street lights at a certain cost per year? If they vote yes, then the installation of the street lighting proceeds, those residents pay – if no, of course there is no cost as no function will exist. We have feasibility funds to do the cost analysis with those benefitting are the only ones that pay for a service.

GUEST VIEWS
There are many examples of services offered in the region. Of course some are regional (the Library network) others are sub-regional (recreation) where those within the function pay. I am not even certain that most people even realize that there is a Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Hospital District (CCRHD)– every taxpayer contributes. As taxpayers we contribute 40 per cent to the capital cost of new construction or improvements to existing hospitals
whether in Williams Lake, Quesnel or 100 Mile House. The CCRHD has a board just as the CRD does. The same elected people represent the CCRHD and are responsible for those capital projects and health concerns to the respective Health Regions. For instance Quesnel is represented by Nothern Health, Williams Lake and 100 mile are represented by Interior Health. Have I confused you yet? Once a year when you receive your tax notice – do you actually look and see what services you are paying for? The CRD has held town hall meetings for years, they are usually not well attended. I wonder why? Personally I have said
many times bring a major tax increase into the equation and residents will attend. In the New Year I will try to discuss the Cariboo Regional District further. If you have any concerns or questions perhaps you can let me know. I don’t do facebook but you can give me a call or submit your concerns to the Cariboo Observer. A little early – but I would like to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas, all the best for the upcoming holiday. Hope to hear from you in the New Year. Driving in a winter wonderland Around this time of year, Cariboo residents watch the weather more frequently. In a winter wonderland, taking precautions and staying on top of weather alerts, planning ahead, staying warm and being extra cautious on roads is the ‘key’ to road safety. As we shift gears in weather, one of the best ways to stay safe is by keeping your vehicles in shape for winter driving. On many of B.C.’s highways, winter tires are mandatory until March 31. They are defined as those labelled with either the winter mountain/snowflake symbol or the mud and snow (M+S) designation.

Hydro demands break records with cooler temperatures BC Hydro predicted province-wide electricity demand to reach near-record breaking highs by Monday evening. Decreasing temperatures have resulted in a significant increase in overall provincial electricity use. Electricity demand peaked at nine, 346 megawatts on Sunday evening between 5 – 6 p.m. This was 1,550 megawatts higher than the peak demand on the Sunday the week before. The power required to serve this increase in demand is equivalent to running three of the four turbines at Mica Generating Station at maximum capacity. Generally, BC Hydro sees the highest demand for electricity between 4 and 8 p.m. on weekday evenings
– the time of day when people come home, turn up the heat, do their laundry, make dinner, and switch on the T.V. BC Hydro expects demand to stay high until temperatures increase later this week with a peak of about 10, 100 megawatts on Monday night. The highest hourly peak demand ever was recorded on Nov. 29, 2006, when consumption reached 10, 113 megawatts between 5 – 6 p.m. New generating units at Mica will help to meet peak demand . To ensure that B.C. continues to have the electricity it needs, especially during periods of peak demand in the winter, two new generating units are being installed at Mica Generating Station
– one of the largest generating facilities in BC Hydro’s system. Mica was originally designed to hold six generating units, but only four were installed when the station was constructed in the 1970’s. The two new generating units will provide an additional 1,000 megawatts
of capacity to the system. The fifth unit will be online before the end of the year. The sixth unit is currently under construction and will be in-service in late 2015. Saving energy at home during cold snap To offset increasing heat requirements,
there are a number of easy ways British Columbians can save on their daily power use, including: • Washing clothes in cold water. • Turning off the “heat dry” function on the dishwasher. • Using a programmable thermostat to heat their house only when they are home.

The best road conditions are after the roads have been plowed. Sometimes, some of us are in a hurry when the snow plow trucks and operators are out in full force clearing our roads, but it is important to keep in mind a few things. A plow truck’s flashing lights indicate to motorists that it is removing snow and spreading sand or salt on the road. This is why it’s important to keep a safe distance, as trying to pass or crowding puts drivers and snow plow operators at a risk of collision. There’s probably nothing more frustrating than shoveling out the driveway and the snow comes right back. Reduce your chances of getting plowed in by clearing the snow at the end of your driveway in the direction traffic flows so that the grader can grab the snow and reduce the blockage. Lastly, the most important safety feature in the vehicle, is the driver. As previously stated, part of being safe, is planning ahead. One way to do this is by checking www.drivebc.ca before you get behind the steering wheel. The Commercial Vehicle (CV) Route Planner is also a free online feature that provides truckers with locations and details of potential clearance restrictions. In conclusion, planning ahead, driving smoothly, leaving plenty of room between cars, examining your vehicle’s safety, plowing your driveway, and being cautious of your surroundings - gives cars, motorists, and their families, the safety and peace of mind they need for this holiday season.

OPINIONS
BCTS should avoid conflict
Quesnel Cariboo Observer
O
ne has to wonder if B.C. Timber Sales has been watching the ongoing protests faced by Kinder Morgan in Burnaby? If it has, then the government agency should clearly recognize the negative publicity that can occur when residents upset over a project are willing to have themselves arrested. It makes for great headlines. Given what is happening in Burnaby, you would think BCTS would want to avoid a similar conflict over its proposed road and logging on Cherry Ridge in Cherryville. “It’s certainly been discussed and some people are keen to do that,” said Hank Cameron, Cherryville’s new regional district director, of residents possibly blocking construction crews. Even if BCTS is completely within its mandate to construct a road and sell timber rights, nothing good can come out of a dispute with the community. It could cost significant dollars if the matter proceeds to court, and certainly hard feelings will be left in Cherryville. With road construction barely started, now is the time for BCTS to back off and enter into dialogue with the community. No one is opposed to logging, but they want assurances that harvesting won’t trigger a slide in the valley below. BCTS should let residents proceed with a watershed assessment and the agency should release reports from a 2012 slide. If BCTS is correct and there is no risk to residents, then those documents should be public. With snow impacting progress of the road and logging not anticipated until next fall, BCTS has time to get involved in constructive and open dialogue. Unfortunately if that doesn’t occur, Cherry Ridge could become another Burnaby Mountain. –Black Press
Nisga’a prove their critics wrong I
t has been 15 years since I wrote a commentary objecting to the B.C. government pushing aside its own hardwon treaty process to reach an unprecedented land-andcash settlement with the Nisga’a Nation for their ancient Nass River territory. My objection, and that of many others, was the imposition of a parallel state with collectively owned land enshrined for all time. This was an ailing NDP government rushing to enable a property ownership system that has demonstrated little but failure and suffering around the world. The Nisga’a are proving me wrong, and this was again demonstrated at a little-noticed ceremony at the B.C. legislature last week. The B.C. government had just passed amendments to allow a gas pipeline through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park, the first co-managed provincial park in B.C. history. Another bill enabled the Nisga’a Lisims government to impose industrial property tax on liquefied natural gas production. Legal documents were signed so
Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views the Nisga’a legislature can do the same this week. In recent years, the Nisga’a disposed of concern about collective land restrictions by adopting a private property system. And Supreme Court of Canada decisions have repeatedly answered protests about the establishment of a parallel state – that’s what it is, so get used to it. The Nisga’a have moved to assemble four fee-simple tidewater sites for LNG terminals, joining the Haisla Nation at Kitimat in reaching aggressively for a modern economy through gas export. The Nisga’a have partnered with TransCanada Corp. on a 900-km pipeline to supply the $11-billion LNG project led by Petronas for the Prince Rupert port. And they don’t intend to stop there. “We want to be
1887 paddling trip down the B.C. coast from the Nass Valley to Victoria to present the Nisga’a territorial claim, where the tribal leaders were turned away on the steps of the legislature by Premier William Smithe. It would take until 1910 for Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier to promise a settlement, and until 1949 for Nisga’a Chief Frank Calder to be elected to the B.C. legislature. In 2000, when the treaty received royal assent in Ottawa, Gosnell took part in a ceremonial burning of the Indian Act and got to work on implementing selfgovernment. And on Nov. 27, 2014, B.C. Liberal, NDP and independent MLAs voted unanimously to open the way to an industrial future for the Nisga’a. “That’s what being alive means to me today,” Gosnell said. “You’ve got to have big dreams. Maybe all those dreams won’t come true, but at least you have the ability to dream big. And boy, are we ever dreaming big.” Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@ blackpress.ca

The signing ceremony was briefly disrupted by one of a small group of Vancouverbased Nisga’a who have been using modern protest tactics against this decision. Nisga’a President Mitchell Stevens has patiently and repeatedly explained that Nisga’a legislature rules were relaxed to allow every hereditary chief to speak to elected leaders on this pivotal move. After that it received the required twothirds majority support. Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who carried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, moved slowly with the help of an ornately carved cane to speak at a reception. He seemed genuinely surprised that he has lived long enough to see the fruits of generations of labour. Gosnell recounted the

By-pass is a long time coming Editor: Open letter to Minister Todd Stone and Minister Coralee Oakes, re: Nov. 21 Observer. I am responding to a request for input which appeared in the Cariboo Observer on Nov, 21. I might mention that I have been an active member of the provincial Liberal party for a number of years now. Also, a few years ago, was the Staff/Sergeant in charge of the Quesnel RCMP Detachment. I have therefore considerable experience in accident investigations, traffic flow, and highway obstructions and bottlenecks. I will get to a potential hazard with the current situation, as I see it.
Letters to the Editor
Currently, as you enter the Quesnel city limits along Hwy. 97 from the south, you encounter a four lane stretch of highway, with two lanes going north, and two lanes heading south. After a distance of 3.8 km, you come to the bridge crossing the Quesnel River, and the highway narrows to just two lanes. You now enter the downtown area, and follow Hwy. 97 with just one lane northbound, through the downtown area, for a distance of 3.1 km. All the traffic, commercial, logging trucks, vacationers, local residents, etc., heading as far as the Yukon and Alaska, have only this one bottleneck of a lane with which to pass through
the downtown core of the city. Bumper to bumper traffic. After 3.1 km, you leave the downtown area, and come to another four lane stretch, two lanes each way. This area is called the Two Mile Flat and all the sawmills, plus one pulpmill are located along it. A serious problem as I see it, is the fact that along this one lane bottleneck through the downtown area, is our hospital, with the Fraser Village housing for seniors, located just south, and next to it. You have our hospital and the Fraser Village boxed in with Hwy. 97 on the east side, and the Fraser River on the west side. The danger as I see it, is the fact that the
commercial vehicles hauling chemicals and other hazardous materials, drive by our hospital and Fraser Village, on a regular basis. There are a number of intersections with traffic lights along this stretch and if a serious accident happens, be it a rearender, and a chemical spill occurs, it would be a disaster. It would be impossible to evacuate the people from the hospital and the Fraser Village in time. There are also a number of apartments along this stretch of highway, with many seniors residing there. A few years back, my letter calling for a bypass was published in the Quesnel-Cariboo Observer. Several other
letters have been written and published also. About two weeks ago, a local columnist Bert DeVink had his entire column devoted to this matter We want a By-pass. I well recall that around 2002 or 2003, our then Premier Gordon Campbell promised that the highway from Hope to Prince George would be four-laned within 10 years time. Now, after almost 11 years, we are still waiting, and have perhaps 60 or 70 kms. that have been completed, of this 635 km stretch. A far cry from the promise made. While billions are being spent on the lower mainland with bridges and roadways, over and under passes, etc., we
in the interior are left sucking the proverbial “Hind tit.” (Pardon my English.) From what people have told me, a by-pass, to pass by the downtown area, would need to start at the top of Dragon Lake Hill somewhere, and then slice at an angle towards the Barkerville junction north of the city, with another bridge crossing the Quesnel River. This opinion can only be verified by qualified engineers. A by-pass is many years overdue, and serious consideration must be given to it. The natives up here in the boondocks (or country bumpkins) are becoming restless. Paul Drescher Quesnel

Santa Shuffle to help the needy For the first time in Quesnel, the Salvation Army is launching the Santa Shuffle and Elf Walk, Dec. 6 beginning at LeBourdais Park, 10 a.m. and follows the River Front Trail. Sponsors include the Running Room and locally supported by Cariboo Country, The Goat and Big Country Printers. This merry event helps the Salvation Army to assist families and individuals in need during the Christmas season and throughout the year. Pledges raised for Santa Shuffle and Elk Walk will support people in our community who may be struggling to make ends

Good Cheer opens Another year has rolled around and Good Cheer has once again opened its doors for donations and sign ups to receive the much appreciated hampers for the Christmas season. The operation has moved this year to the old Liquidation World location in Maple Park Mall. Those wishing to have their name added to the Quesnel Good Cheer roster and those donating non-perishable food, cash donations and toys as well as gifts for teenagers can do so at the south entrance to the mall, watch for signs. “More than 200 teenagers were among those on the list of recipients in 2013 and I don’t believe we had gifts for all of them, so we’re really looking for that age group,” Good Cheer coordinator Dianne Greenwood said. In 2013, 801 hampers were filled with the donations Good Cheer received. “All the good work by Good Cheer volunteers to help feed the needy is based on the generous community donations,” Greenwood said. “We have no other source for filling the hampers.” The depot is open Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. To call the depot, phone 250-747-0065. Donations must be in by Dec. 17 as hampers go out Dec. 20 – 21.

Poppy Fund donation Andrew Sherstan, 14, right, hands over $500 to Legion Poppy Fund chair Helene Boudreau, left. The money represents 10 per cent of Andrew’s pay checks. He chose to donate this money to the Legion Poppy Fund because it seemed to be a good place to put his money, especially as both his great grandfathers served in the Second World War. With this donation, Boudreau said it pushes the 2014 campaign to $30,100, the most collected in the past three years.
Diversity at work

Two schools step up to the plate Congratulations to Correlieu senior secondary school cafeteria and Quesnel junior secondary school cafeteria for their leadership in creating a diverse workplace Dengarry Professional Services would like to congratulate Correlieu senior secondary school cafeteria and Quesnel Junior school (QJS) cafeteria for creating a diverse workforce. This has been shown through their commitment in hiring an individual with developmental disabilities. These businesses are being rewarded with Diversity@Work Stickers to place on their door or window. Both schools recognize the value of a diverse workforce and the contributions people with developmental disabilities can give to the workplace and the community. BC EmployNet has initiated the window sticker program across B.C. to recognize employers who have shown their belief in diversity in the workplace by hiring a capable individual who also happens to have a disability. Many people with developmental disabilities are eager to be employed, want to earn an income, be a contributing member to their community and valued in their jobs. Real work for real pay enhances independence, financial security and fosters a sense of belonging. Part of the goal of recognizing businesses that demonstrate their belief in a diverse workplace is to inform consumers who may in turn choose to use their purchasing power to support such businesses. So, again, we are pleased to congratulate and recognize Correlieu and QJS cafeterias for their efforts and leadership in this area. If you have any questions about the Diversity@Work program, contact Stephanie Pomeroy or Tim Hall at 250-992-7900 ext.6.

Luna Clinic celebrates 10 years of service to the community
Women's Clinic with a heart

or the past 10 years, public health nurses have been reaching out to women through the Luna Clinic, held every Thursday at the Women’s Resource Centre (WRC), providing reproductive health procedures such as pap tests and breast examinations and support along with other information and services about such issues as birth control, STI screening and morning after pills. “I knew so many women who didn’t get pap tests,” former street nurse and retired health nurse Kathy Wrath said. “We expected to see a majority of young women but we saw middle-aged women, older women and of course young women.” When Wrath first envisioned a clinic for women outside the traditional doctor’s offices, there were many Northern Health and other government programs in place to support such a venture. Together with the B.C. Cancer Agency and Canadian Centre for Disease Control who provide supplies along with the free room at the WRC, Rath and her fellow public health nurses set up shop to serve women 10 years ago this month. “Its a relaxed, open environment where women can feel comfortable taking their time, asking all their questions and have the vitally important screening to ensure their health is maintained,” public health nurse Cristina Ferreira said. Over the years, the relationship with physicians has steadily improved and public health and current street nurse Reanne Sanford said its much like a partnership
where women are being referred by their doctors to the Luna Clinic for these very personal procedures if they so chose. All results are forwarded to the client’s doctor, if she has one. “For many in the community, it’s difficult to find a doctor taking on new patients, but we work closely with our clients and should they need to follow up with a doctor as a result of our screening, we have a system for processing results,” Sanford said. Wrath said one of the biggest changes she’s seen in the past 10 years since Luna Clinic opened its doors, is the acceptability of nurses doing these procedures, with special training and certification. Sanford added that some women who come to the clinic begin to be empowered when they go and see their own doctors about health issues. The Luna Clinic, in 2014, serviced 87 women from all walks of life and all socio-economic backgrounds. “We capture the population who don’t go to their doctor for these services,” Ferreira said. The free, drop-in Luna Clinic is open from 12 – 3 p.m. Thursdays and staffed by specially trained public health nurses. The clinic also has the benefit of on-site Stop the Violence counsellors where clients can be referred to should they want that service. As well, the clinic is located conveniently close to Amata Transition House and those clients can safely access the clinic services.

CAPSULE COMMENTS With Jessica Joly B.Sc. (Pharm)
We always wish we had advance warning of a serious illness about to befall us. There is….for diabetes. It’s called prediabetes and is a sort of early alert system that says you might be moving toward a full diabetes diagnosis. This can be picked up by certain blood tests ordered by your doctor and if it shows you have prediabetes, lifestyle changes can be made to possibly avoid the disease. People have various reasons for not getting their flu shot each year. They may say it’s not perfect so why bother? Flu vaccine has saved many lives over the years and yes, it isn’t perfect, but with so few side effects and it’s worth the effort. We encourage everyone, especially healthcare workers to get their flu shot this year. Speaking of vaccines, there is a lot of work going on right now to find a vaccine against Parkinson’s Disease. An Austrian company has developed a vaccine that is in very early clinical trials. It has been well tolerated and the results have been positive. Money for the research has been provided by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. There has been much in the media about taking baby ASA for 5-10 years to reduce your risk of getting bowel, stomach and esophageal cancers. We know we can reduce cancer risk by stopping smoking and losing weight but this ASA method is showing promise. BUT, DO NOT start taking this drug without your doctor’s approval. It has side effects which can be damaging. Before you take it, talk about it. Good advice to follow with any medication.

Programs to keep our community strong QWRC is one of Quesnel’s bright stars on the path to social justice The Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre (QWRC) since 1981 has been an important facet of Quesnel’s lively social scene. An overview of their current projects and initiatives merits utmost respect. As a non-profit society, with a strong volunteer component, it is one of several community stars brightening what could be a very dim sky. The QWRC is planning a coming remembrance of the massacre of 14 female engineering students at Université de Montréal on Dec. 6, 1989. The world-wide response to the memory of the Montreal Massacre is an acknowledgement that senseless violence will not be tolerated. It was perpetrated by Marc Lépine, who yelled “I hate femi-

The Centre will be hosting a memorial luncheon on Friday, Dec. 5, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The Centre provides a number of programs, Stopping the Violence counselling and outreach for victims of violence, a drop-in program and the Bridging program that helps women who need a boost to return to work in confidence and pride. The Luna Women’s Wellness Clinic runs Thursday afternoons out of the Centre. To raise awareness about and prevent future bullying and violence, the Respectful Relationships program is now implemented at Quesnel Junior Secondary school. Connecting Our Community Giving Costs Less than You Think The federal and provincial governments provide generous tax incentives to encourage individuals to support their charity of choice but most donors grossly underestimate the true value of these savings. This is partly attributable to the fact that federal and provincial tax credits are calculated separately and not shown as one total amount on an individual’s tax return. In BC the charitable donation tax credits are calculated as follows: • For the first $200 of donations being claimed by a BC tax payer, the combined federal and provincial tax credits total 20.06% (15% federal and 5.06% provincial); • Any donations exceeding the first $200 on the tax return receive combined federal and provincial tax credits totalling 43.7% (29% federal and 14.7% provincial); • Tax credits can be used to reduce the amount of tax the donor owes for the year; and, • The total amount of charitable donations claimed for the calendar year cannot exceed 75% of the net income of the tax payer. If your donations exceed this 75% limit, you can claim the remaining donations on the tax returns during any of the next five years. While tax savings may not be the major incentive for charitable giving, they should not be overlooked when contemplating what size of gift might be possible. The charitable donation tax credit also applies to gifts given through wills and can be a very important tool in reducing taxes owing at death. To find out more on how you can give to the Quesnel Community Foundation, visit our website at www.quesnelfoundation.ca or email qcf@shaw.ca Note - This information is for general information purposes only and is not intended to be legal or tax advice. FHL week eleven showdowns T
he morning after the best rendition of “Danny Boy” ever, two dandy games are played as BCS stage a terrific comeback to edge GM 7-6 as Bear hold off Serenity for a Steve Dodge 4-3 win. PAPERBACK WRITER You need to be on quite the roll to be compared to “Proud Mary” and that is what BCS is, as they kept on rolling, rolling, rolling over Fraser River. This time however they were actually behind at the half and even with their scoring leader’s departure, managed to cue the comeback for the 7-6 victory. Leading the charge was Justin “Time” Rasmussen who engaged the quadra-track for a quartet of goals and an assist as his much more experienced line mate Colin oscopy Keis also scored and added a pair of assists. Speaking of ever being experienced, three players with a combined age of 150 also sparkled as Rocking Chair Rod Albers knitted a pair of mesh ripplers with Senile Scott Fairless and Bruce Geezer Broughton combining for five assists. Throwing his team on his back in an attempt to halt the BCS win streak was Fraser River’s Captain Kevin Hesslegrave who scored the hat trick and added a pair of assists in his usual spectacular style. Also having a successful game were rear-guards Warren Duck Dynasty Dagenais with two assists and a crushing bodycheck as Kris Haymitch Hayman scored another beauty and dished out a pair of helpers. Meanwhile in the new rink, the two cellar dwellers waged a battle that left Bear with only seven skaters as they extended Serenity’s swoon with a 4-3 oxygen starved victory. The Builders actually had the early lead as Grant Adams Johannesen pounced on a juicy rebound for his second goal in Movember. Bear fought back for a short lived lead of their own as Kerry Small Irishman Fitz-Gerald hammered one in from the point before Lee Pavel Naeth showed his amazing patience before popping one into the peanut butter section. Just after that Serenity’s friendly giant Wade Trevor Fenton tied it up on a perfect feed from Jeff Courtnall Needham and it looked like the teams would head to the half tied at two’s. That’s when Jim Lumme Scott notched his first of the campaign on a seeing eye shot from the point with seconds to go before Zamboni time. With work calling Jyrki away the Bear boys were down to eight skaters which soon became seven when Derek Hedican Burdikin popped out his shoulder on an end to end rush. From then on a rope-a-dope strategy ensued as the two Bear defense men played the final 20 minutes as one long shift. Luckily for Bear, Brody Momesso Neighbour scored an insurance goal before Serenity’s Cliff Ronning Hunik made it a one goal game as time wound down. Catch me if you can WHITNEY GRIFFITHS Observer Reporter Victoria hosted the Provincial Championships for cross country running at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre, Nov. 1. Quesnel sent 10 talented young athletes from Correlieu Secondary school to participate in this event. Racing for the boys were runners Cole Dinsdale, Kondrad Teetzen, Dylan Cathcart, Dane Jacobsen, Ryan Elder and Jared Fisher. Dinsdale took the led for the Correlieu boys. It had previously been his goal to be placed somewhere in the top 25 at this event but Dinsdale was still recovering from an injury suffered at the beginning of the season making it more of a challenge. This determined athlete was not going to allow an injury to hold him back despite his late start and though he did not get the placing he had previously set his eye on, Dinsdale brought in a 54th place out of 235. There was another injury for the Quesnel boys team, runner Konrad Teetzen also was late to the cross country running season having suffered an eye injury. It wasn’t until one week before zones in October that Teezten had received the doctors permission to even begin training and in a flash this runner was up and preparing himself for the competition. With injured runners and a young team, having three Grade 10’s on their six-person team being pitted against boys one or two years their senior, the Correlieu team had their work cut out for them. The scores for team races are calculated by taking the scores of the top five runners on each team. There were 24 team competing in the boys division and the Correlieu boys team raced in for a
12th place win. For a team to compete the rules dictate that there must be at least five runners from the same school and unfortunately for the girls they were unable to make this requirement. Although they could not race as a team the Quesnel girls were still able to compete individually. It was a triumphant race for Grade 11 runner Olivia Baptiste. Baptiste placed 14th out of 225 senior girls and, not only that, she raced by the competition to place first for the North Central zone. Also racing in with high ranking results was Kyra Teetzen. Teetzen, running in for the 55th spot overall, followed only a minute behind fellow Correlieu runner Baptiste. Teetzen was the third runner across the line for the North Central zone. Taking spot 107 overall and running in for 11th place for Quesnel’s zone is competitor Mia Kozak. Grade 9 runner Avery Drew was the lone competitor coming for Quesnel Junior School. She raced alongside her older counterparts with great success coming in only a few seconds behind Teezten in 65th place overall. Drew also raced in for ninth place for her age. Despite not having a team to compete it was a successful event for the girls, with all racers finishing in the top half of the field. Next year coach Pat Marsh is hopeful they will have a team in place for the girls, with the goal of competing for the top 10 team awards as well as having stellar individual results. But with the snow on the ground the racers unlace their runners and pack them away until next years events.

November 30 - December 6, 2014 ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, expect to be called into action several times this week. You may prefer to avoid the spotlight, but that won’t be the case this week. Make the most of this opportunity. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, all of a sudden you are so busy it can be difficult to find a few moments to rest. Thankfully, you are able to keep up with all of the activity. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, seek advice from a trusted confidante as you contemplate a major lifestyle change. This person will provide valuable insight as you look to make the best decision possible. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, going solo on a project may not seem like the ideal situation. But you don’t want to be distracted this week, so going it alone is the best way to tackle the tasks at hand. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, following your gut may not always work out, but this week everything works out for the best. Curb impulsiveness as much as you can, though.
Football fever With all the Grey Cup excitement winding down it’s time to recap the Gold Pan’s football success. The Correlieu Clansmen had a late start to the football season but quickly made up for lost time. Playing six games and finishing with a three and three record. The team celebrated a victory, thrusting their helmets in the air in triumph, at their final game of the season against Vanderhoof. Contributed photo
