McNeill council sworn in J.R. Rardon Gazette staff PORT McNEILL—In what was as much a celebration of the retirement of longtime mayor Gerry Furney, Port McNeill’s new mayor and council were sworn in Monday night before a standingroom only crowd in coun-
cil chambers. Incoming Mayor Shirley Ackland was joined by councillors Jay Dixon, Shelley Downey, Aaron Frost and Graham MacDonald in the brief ceremony, which was both opened and closed by Furney — who served on the Town’s first council
and who spent 39 years as mayor before choosing not to run for office again this fall. “This is a day in history,” Ackland said in a room bedecked with photos of past councils, nearly all of them bearing Furney’s likeness. “We’ve been very fortunate to have a
mayor as long as we have leading our town and putting us on such a good foundation. As he’s said many times, it’s a job he’s enjoyed, serving this community, because he really cares about all of us who live here.” Then, turning to Furney, Ackland added, “We hope
we do you proud.” Ackland is the lone returning member from the most recent municipal government, having served the past six years on council. Both Downey and Frost, though, return

Gazette staff A clam discovered in the waters of Quatsino Sound 10 years ago has been recognized as a new species, and its home waters were honoured in the name given to the unique bivalve. Thanks to the sharp eye of Royal BC Museum Curator of Invertebrates Melissa Frey the specimen was found within the Royal BC Museum’s collection,

where had lain undisturbed since 2004. “When I first saw the specimen, I suspected it was special – turned out there appeared to be no similar species from this coast in the existing taxonomic literature, suggesting that indeed this species was new to science,” Frey said. The clam, collected by Fisheries and Oceans Canada at about 1,000 metres depth off of Quatsino subscriptions: 250-949-6225
Sound in 2004, is now a one-ofa-kind find. The discovery “goes to show how little we know about the ocean environment that sustains us,” said Jackie Hildering, the local marine researcher who blogs as the Marine Detective. “The relevance of the discovery is that, when one considers 95 per cent of the ocean has yet to be seen by human eyes, it’s not surprising to
see this kind of discovery — it forces us into a proper humility.” Hildering pointed out that the unique conditions around North Vancouver Island are conducive to the evolution of separate species, but discovering these unknown species requires an expert eye.

Museum notes new species in Quatsino Sound from Page 1 “We know more about the moon than our own oceans,” she said. “We’re at the stage of not only finding new marine organisms, but we’re finding new marine ecosystems. “It shows how little we know about our life-sustaining seas. It shows we should proceed with caution, yet we have this onslaught.” The museum said that the discovery of a new species of marine invertebrate is rare; Frey estimates it occurs about twice per year for British Columbia ecosystems. The first telltale sign that the clam is unique is in its shell, which

The species’ scientific name, Ascetoaxinus quatsinoensis, is a tribute to both its curious shape and its home. The find also highlights the importance of museum collections. Worldwide, millions of specimens are collected and deposited into museums for longterm, safe storage. From there, experts have the opportunity to borrow and study the samples for scientific research. The process to identify stored specimens can take years, or even decades,
Trevena opens doors
Gazette staff PORT HARDY— MLA Claire Trevena opened the doors of her Port Hardy office to constituents at an open house event last week. The Transportation Critic explained that her office was temporarily closed earlier in the year but, with the addition of Port Hardy Councillor Fred Robertson to the staff, the local office has resumed its regular hours. “I think its important to have that connection,” said Trevena. Robertson said that
he would be available at the office Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and that calls from local constituents to the Campbell River office outside of those hours would be relayed back to the local office and the MLA. Trevena said that she was in the local area every two weeks, usually out in the community, but said she was always happy to meet and discuss concerns. To contact the MLA call 1-866-387-5100 toll free or email MLA Claire Trevena chats to constituents Claire.trevena.mla@ at her open house event in Port Hardy leg.bc.ca. A O’Toole earlier this week.

due to the large volume of materials collected and the limited number of experts. . “Resulting discoveries highlight why our natural history collections are so valuable. Sometimes people question the purpose of keeping preserved
animals,” Frey said. “But hidden within our collections are opportunities for discovery: new records, new attributes – even new species. Ultimately, these collections allow us to better understand and steward the spectacular diversity living
within the ocean.” The only sample in the world of this new species of clam is now taking its place among the thousands of specimens at the Royal BC Museum, adding to the collective knowledge of B.C.’s coastal waters.

Council bids farewell
Gazette staff PORT HARDY— Councillors bid their farewells and paid tribute to the late Deb Huddlestan at the final regular meeting of the 2011-14 Port Hardy Council last week. With the passing of the deputy mayor, the first order of business was to nominate a new acting mayor, with coun. John Tidbury receiving the nomination. The councillors held a moment of silence for Huddlestan and expressed their shock and sadness at her passing. The councillors also paid tribute to each

other during council reports, with each councillor reflecting on the relationships and achievement of the previous three years. In last month’s election incumbents Jessie Hemphill, Rick Marcotte and Tidbury were returned to the table. They will be joined by Pat CorbettLabatt, Dennis Dugas and Fred Robertson on the new council. Councillor Nikki Shaw did not run for re-election, and coun. Janet Dorward was defeated by Hank Book in her
run for the mayor’s seat. “Losing the election was disappointing,” said coun. Dorward, “but losing (Huddlestan) within hours was devastating.” The new council held its inaugural meeting earlier this week, after the Gazette went to press, and holds its first regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the Municipal Hall.
Variance In one of its last acts the council granted a variance approval to Daryl St. Claire. St. Clair had fallen foul of zoning restrictions with the construc-
tion of a metal-framed carport at his home and sought an exemption to allow him to complete the structure. Director of Corporate Services Jeff Long told council that, under the current rules, the structure did not meet setback restrictions and also placed the home in excess of the 40 per cent buildings-to-lotsize restriction. Long explained that staff had contacted neighbours and received only support for the construction, and St. Clair had obtained approval from the strata for the shelter. Council approved his request.
Paws for a cause
Elena Rardon Gazette staff PORT HARDY—The 4Paws Rescue Society held a pancake breakfast at the Port Hardy Civic Centre last month to raise funds and celebrate the work they have accomplished since their establishment as a society early this year. 4Paws is a volunteer-based, non-profit society based in Port Hardy that serves dogs in the Tri-Port area. Its mission is to provide a more humane community by offering programs for spaying and neutering, emergency care assistance, flea control and food and shelter. The society also provides adoption,

fostering, and unplanned litter assistance, as well as education and outreach. The hot breakfast Saturday was served by the Junior Canadian Rangers, who also helped with set-up and take-down. “The JCR (Junior Canadian Rangers) have been a huge help here today,” said Susan Emerson, one of the event’s organizers. She labelled the society as a group of eight, plus plenty of volunteers. “This is a non-profit organization,” Emerson said. “All the proceeds we make go straight back into the Tri-Port area.” 4Paws held a fundraising dinner in January, but this is their
first pancake breakfast. Alex Shorre, another organizer, says that she hopes it becomes an annual event, noting that the event raised more than $2,000 for the society. While passing out raffle tickets, Shorre took the time to point out a few posters on the wall, celebrating the society’s accomplishments. “We’ve had over forty dogs spayed and neutered this year,” she said. “And 21 dogs we’ve rescued. All of this was accomplished through fundraising.” For more information, or to volunteer or make a donation, visit the 4Paws website at www.4pawsrescuesociety.ca.

Worth remembering Dear editor: On a recent bright morning under sunny skies the Remembrance Day ceremony was held at Carrot Park. It was a great turn out this year and on behalf as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion I would like to thank everyone who took the time out of their busy lives to come and participated in the act of Remembrance. To see all of the different groups of people who attended both young and old makes me glad to consider myself a citizen of Port Hardy. Many thanks to the paramedics who provided such excellent first aid to the two people who were in need during the ceremony. We do hope that they are feeling much better now. The Ladies Auxiliary would like to send a great big thank you to Craig and his staff at Overwaitea and Pat from the Old School House Store for their generous donations to our open house luncheon which was held at the Legion after the ceremony and to which all adults that attended the ceremony were invited. It sure was nice that so many people were able to attend. Alison Flannigan Port Hardy
Going to the dogs Dear editor, Monday, Nov. 17, I had an unfortunate run-in with a German shepherd charging at myself and my dog (attack mode). I stood my ground with a deep, firm yell and my dog froze. The dog I believed either listened to my firm tone or, because my dog froze and she was on her leash by me, didn’t bite. A year ago this October I was attacked up at the top of Rupert Street and an article regarding this was written up by the Gazette. More people are becoming victims of dog incidents around town due to vicious dogs, strays or careless owners. What I also learned was how many victims don’t bother to officially report these incidents. They don’t realize that if it’s not formally reported, it makes it harder for another person who has been brutally attacked to seek justice if it’s the same dog or dogs. It could save a small child or another dog’s life if you take the time to report it (it’s like building a case). I’m at a loss on how to protect myself or for other people’s sake. I’d rather see information in the paper on how to protect ourselves rather then the growing gruesome dog attacks that occur. They seem to go unpunished or too lenient towards the dog owners that should have been more responsible. Again, though it falls back to the victims reporting it to the District of Port Hardy in writing, along with a stamped, dated copy by the District, it is important to obtain a copy for themselves! Nisga’a prove their critics wrong VICTORIA – It has been 15 years since I wrote a commentary objecting to the B.C. government pushing aside its own hard-won treaty process to reach an unprecedented land-andcash settlement with the Nisga’a Nation for their ancient Nass River territory. My objection, and that of many others, was the imposition of a parallel state with collectively owned land enshrined for all time. This was an ailing NDP government rushing to enable a property ownership system that has demonstrated little but failure and suffering around the world. The Nisga’a are proving me wrong, and this was again demonstrated at a little-noticed ceremony at the B.C. legislature last week. The B.C. government had just passed amendments to allow a gas pipeline through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park,

the first co-managed provincial park in B.C. history. Another bill enabled the Nisga’a Lisims government to impose industrial property tax on liquefied natural gas production. Legal documents were signed so the Nisga’a legislature can do the same this week. In recent years, the Nisga’a disposed of concern about collective land restrictions by adopting a private property system. The Nisga’a have moved

The Nisga’a have partnered with TransCanada Corp. on a 900-km pipeline to supply the $11-billion LNG project led by Petronas for the Prince Rupert port. And they don’t intend to stop there. “We want to be part of the Canadian business establishment,” said former Nisga’a Nation president Joe Gosnell. Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who carried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, recounted the 1887 paddling trip down the B.C. coast from the Nass Valley to Victoria to present the Nisga’a territorial claim, where the tribal leaders were turned away on the steps of the legislature by Premier William Smithe. In 2000, when the treaty received royal assent in Ottawa, Gosnell took part in a ceremonial burning of the Indian Act and got to work on implementing self-government. And on Nov. 27, 2014, B.C. Liberal, NDP and independent MLAs voted unanimously to open the way to an industrial future for the Nisga’a. “That’s what being alive means to me today,” Gosnell said. “You’ve got to have big dreams. Maybe all those dreams won’t come true, but at least you have the ability to dream big. And boy, are we ever dreaming big.” Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca.

Bluegrass quartet strings along audience A review by J.R. Rardon PORT HARDY— The Tishomingo String Band did not come into Saturday’s show with Junowinning credentials or a familiar catalogue of hits the audience could latch onto. Still, they managed a big win by employing a simple bit of musical honesty in the second event of the North Island Concert Society’s second show of
the 2014-15 season at the Civic Centre. Va n c o u v e r - b a s e d Tishomingo sells itself as a bluegrass band. And the quartet of Devon Wells on banjo, brothers Jacob and Chris Russell on mandolin and guitar, respectively, and Russell Sholberg on double bass definitely gave the crowd a taste of both traditional and original bluegrass during Saturday’s show. But the foursome ranged
far afield from bluegrass into approximations of jazz, country, pop and various fusion arrangements of all of these genres. This is a group not strong on vocals. Lucas Russell’s raw, oddly toneless, Tom Waits-like growl and Wells’ high end-challenged tenor provided most of the lead vocals, though the threeand four-part harmonies mask this deficiency. Instrumentally, the group is tight and proficient.
Opening the first set with a mix of traditionals and originals from their two recorded CDs, including the recently released Dangerfield, Tishomingo received polite but unremarkable response. The intricate, tempo-bending original Sunderland’s Waltz perked the crowd’s interest, and the band seemed to capture listeners with the Earl Scruggs banjo classic Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
Coming out of intermission, Tishomingo took a risk by dividing its forces. Jacob Russell played a series of three solo songs in the Ottawa Valley folk vein. He then stepped aside as Wells, Chris Russell and Sholberg took the stage for four numbers that Russell described as, “A sort of country jazz; I don’t really know what it is.” When the full band returned to finish out the show, they stuck with their
Celtic Xmas returns Just for you
Gazette staff Between this week’s snow and reported sightings of a certain red-and-white clad gentleman on the North Island, Christmas is fast approaching. And this weekend will see the return of another festive favourite as the Team Charlton Highland Dancers take to the stage for their annual Celtic Christmas performances. The popular dance recital will see around 55 local dancers, from 4-year-old beginners to seasoned high-schoolers, perform traditional dances and self-choreographed pieces in a pair of shows this weekend. The local contingent will be joined once more by champion dancers Mellisa Carnegie and Ross Armour as well as piper Alan Walters. Shows will take place Saturday, Dec. 6, 6:30 p.m. at PHSS, and Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Gate House Theatre, beginning at 11 a.m. Tickets are available from the Flower Shoppe in Port McNeill and Cafe Guido in Port Hardy. The shows will crown a successful year for Teresa Charlton’s school of highland dancing. Two dancers from the school

strength — instrumental numbers — and loosened up noticeably onstage, with comfortable banter and successful calls for the audience to join in clapping and singing along. Paying tribute to influences ranging from Django Rheinhardt to Bob Wills, and throwing in classic Balkan folk and Scottish fiddle songs, Tishomingo kept the audience — and perhaps themselves — engaged and interested.

Eagles net home sweep Gazette staff PORT McNEILL—The North Island Eagles hockey program enjoyed a solid weekend of play at Chilton Regional Arena last weekend, with the midget squad rolling to a pair of impressive wins and the bantam and peewee squads cruising to individual victories in Vancouver Island Hockey League Division 3 play. Midgets Goalie Nyck Ruel enjoyed a strong weekend in net, posting a 3-1 win over Nanaimo Saturday and a 7-0 shutout of Comox Valley Sunday. The wins allowed the midgets (5-2-0) to leapfrog Nanaimo into second place in the Division 3 standings, just a point behind
Juan de Fuca. Thomas Symons had two goals in Saturday’s win, both assisted by Brandon Purdey, and Cameron Grant also found the net. On Sunday, Sean Pineda scored two goals and Grant, Purdey, Emma Mitchell, Alex Scott and Darryl Coon all had singles as the midgets spread the wealth against Comox. Bantams Tanner Roberts scored two goals and Bree-Anna Henderson, Michael Perez and Devin White also scored as the Tier 3 Eagles rolled to a 5-1 win over Victoria Racquet Club’s Tier 2 club Saturday. The win left the bantams (2-3-1) in a
fourth-place tie in league play, just two points behind secondplace, Tier 2 Juan de Fuca with three games in hand over the Grizzlies. Peewees Rhys Dutcyvich scored five goals and Mathew Saunders and Luke Gage added two apiece as the peewees raced past Cowichan Valley 10-4 Saturday. Chelsea Noel added a goal and Ryan Patterson and Liem Wadhams contributed assists in the big win. The peewees improved to 2-2-2 in league play, placing them in the middle of the North Island Eagles peewees Avory Collins, left, and Keenan Jack league standings but just two points behind league-leading try to slow the charge of Cowichan Valley’s Dylan Langer (7) during their Division 3 league game Saturday. Minor club raises major funds Gazette staff PORT McNEILL—A prize offer from twotime Stanley Cup winner Willie Mitchell proved plenty of incentive for Port McNeill’s Minor Hockey players to boost the club’s finances. Mitchell offered a chance for one of Port McNeill’s teams to join him, Vancouver
Canucks general manager Trevor Linden and others in a skatearound at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. Each team was asked to raise at least $1,500 to qualify, and most of the teams have wildly exceeded that goal. “It’s gone 10 times beyond what we expected,” said Glenn Moore, association
vice president. “We’ve had teams raise six and seven thousand.” The contest ran through the month of November. The winning team will be selected during a pizza party and draw at Gate House Theatre this Saturday. This day of action was established by parliament in 1991 and marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. It has been 25 years since this tragedy and the day has since come to include remembrance and action against all violence against women. For info, call NICCC at 250-949-8333.

Vigil against violence
gets eliminated band and choir programs in schools. Murray’s first online auction, in 2012, raised more than $20,000 to provide seed money for the program, which began in January of 2013 and which is wrapping up its second year in Port McNeill. Offshoot programs have started up in Port Hardy and Sointula. The auction closes this Sunday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. Auction items can be viewed and bids placed at georgiamurray.net/ auction.

North Island Life Celebrating the season Gazette staff The big man in red took time out of his busy schedule to pop by a series of North Island events last weekend. And local artists and artisans made sure he felt welcome as Port McNeill hosted a craft bazaar and a festive play to usher in the
season. Port McNeill lit its community Christmas Tree Saturday night followed by a special performance at the Gate House Community Theatre by the after-school drama program. Here’s some of our favourite moments from the weekend...
Clockwise from above: Santa’s (Josiah Waines) true identity is revealed by the nefarious Owl Hoot Gang during a Christmas play put on by the Gate House Community Association’s after-school drama program Saturday; Mad Hatter Cheryl Verbrugge (left) and Angela Kingcott share their knitwear during the annual Christmas Showcase of Arts and Crafts at the Community Hall Saturday; Santa confronts the nefarious Owl Hoot Gang in order to save Miss Kitty (Moriah Purdy) during the Christmas play; Santa applauds the community Christmas tree in Port McNeill during Saturday’s lighting ceremony at Pioneer Mall; The Bead Lady (Carol Ellison) had a number of colourful Christmas ornaments on display during the annual Christmas Showcase of Arts and Crafts.
