STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Red Deer County 2015 capital and operating budgets, tabled during county council’s Nov. 25 regular meeting, will see a $6 million decrease in spending. The 2015 operating budget sees a $1 million increase, and will rise from $45.4 million to $46.4 million. Outside funding requests account for about $3 million of that amount. Special levies remain unchanged: Community Services at 0.4000; Protective Services at 0.5000; and Environmental Services at 0.1590. Fewer large-scale projects will mean a drastic decrease in capital spending in 2015, from more than $27 million down to about $20.5 million. The county says overall service levels won’t be affected by the decrease, as a number of one-off items were contained in the 2014 budget. A new Protective Services building and Gasoline Alley storm water improvements were among them. Mayor Jim Wood said the budget is indicative of the county’s positive financial position.

“We continue to undertake major road and infrastructure projects without compromising our reserves or unfairly burdening our ratepayers,” he noted in a county release. Director of corporate services Heather Gray said council’s strategic plan was strongly considered by administration while preparing the budget, with administration working to “ensure adequate resources are available to achieve success.” A $1.1 million contribution to the Sylvan Lake Multiplex Redevelopment Project over two years is among the budget’s key initiatives. Others include a road paving program at $6 million, bridge repair projects at $4.1 million, an airport capital expansion request of $1.7 million, and a Canada Winter Games facility request for $500,000. Public input is now being sought before the budget returns to council for approval Dec. 9. The draft budget can be viewed in its entirety on the Red Deer County website at rdcounty.ca. “I would like to thank the staff and council for their hard work in creating this progressive budget,” said Wood.

Volunteers Wanted Sylvan Lake Seniors Lodge is looking for volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels program. Also needed is a co-ordinator to organize the drivers. As a volunteer, you will be providing the community the opportunity to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and empower people to fight back. To get involved, contact volunteer@cancer.ab.ca or 403-347-3662. Volunteers are required for Friends of the Library committee. Do you enjoy the library? Would you like to make a difference? We are looking for enthusiastic friends to support the library in many different ways. As I stood in my office munching on Ritz Crackers, I suddenly remembered that a year ago today I made the steadfast decision to commit to being a pesco-vegetarian. To define the term pesco-vegetarian, it’s a vegetarian category that involves eating a mostly plant-based diet, but also eating fish and seafood. I do eat eggs and I do drink milk sometimes, I just don’t eat anything that crawls or walks on land. The main source of inspiration to cut meat out of my diet came from my research into what goes on in some slaughter houses, as outlined in the documentary ‘Vegucated’. After watching the documentary, I not only stopped eating meat, I stopped wearing anything made from leather or fur. That meant refusing to wear the leather gloves my mom had given me, as well as the Danier leather jacket I had hanging in my closet. In the winter time I simply stick to wearing many layers of fleece and wool. If I wear anything that resembles leather, please know it is not real! My eyes were opened to the horrors that take place in some slaughter houses to innocent animals. I was horrified at the brutal treatment some pigs, chickens and cows are subject to. I saw pigs being shot with stun guns then falling over and twitching in shock as they died. Eating plant-based meals came easy to me, as every time I was tempted to eat meat, I remembered the fear and torment some animals endure right before their death. A challenge I have faced is eating dinner with my meat-eating husband and the rest of my meat-eating Chinese family. Eating dinner at home, I have seen a lot of different cooked animal parts on the table. During these times, I usually just stick with eating rice and whichever raw vegetables are available. I remember at one point making bean, kale and egg stew, which turned out to be very tasty, especially with melted cheese and sour cream added. I was sure my family wouldn’t want to

try it as it did not contain meat, but much to my surprise, some of them did try it. Some of them even liked it. One of the most fun things about being a vegetarian is grocery shopping, which entails buying fruits and vegetables that are healthy for you. I have found a love for avocados and making vegetarian caesar garlic wraps. I have met people who are baffled at my decision to not eat meat and who have gone on to ask me strange questions such as if I would ever eat scientifically manufactured meat. I simply reply no.

I stand by my decision to become a vegetarian, and often question why an animal must die just so I can consume it when there’s a whole variety of delicious vegetables out there that can be consumed. I have never seen a carrot quiver in fear of being killed. All in all, I am proud to say I am a vegetarian, and have been for a year now. I don’t miss eating meat as I never particularly liked chewing through a steak. I would much rather munch on carrots or broccoli and know that no animal has suffered just so I can eat it.

Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce proposes to again sponsor sports car races on the ice of the lake this winter. It was felt that this event proved to be popular in past years when it was here, and that it should be continued. Last year the races were not held because the Central Alberta Sports Car Association, which were co-sponsoring the races, were not able to obtain insurance to cover races at a reasonable rate. However, as the Central Alberta body is now affiliated with the national association, insurance coverage is available at much lower rates, and it is

planned to re-organize the event to be held early in the near year. ♦ ♦ ♦ Officers for the coming year were elected at the Fish and Game meeting, held in the W.I. Hall on Dec. 7. They are as follows: President - Ray Albert; First Vice President - Fred Walker; Second Vice President - Bill Lund; Treasurer - Mike Podgurski; Secretary - B. C. Learned. ♦ ♦ ♦ At the noon luncheon of Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce, President Bill Tennant presented an Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association award to Warren Dunford, editor of Sylvan Lake News, for second prize for best editorial page in its class in the 1964 competition of the association.

Significant progress in pursuit of enhanced health care STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care update issued earlier this week acknowledges the significant progress that’s been made in the town’s pursuit of enhanced health services

over the past several months. A business plan for a Provincefunded Family Care Centre (FCC) was recently submitted to Alberta Health, and includes the provision of a number of core medical services, including, but not limited to, medical assistance for non-life-threaten-

ing injuries, observation beds and extended hours. Discussions from meetings resulted in a number of additions being made to the business plan, including programs relating to mental health, seniors care and children’s lifestyle management. “We believe that this broader approach to patient care, with a stronger focus on prevention and health management by individuals with intervention and guidance from the right health professionals, will be a strong addition to the extended-hours clinic, and could exceed our original

Urgent Care Centre vision which will pave the way for enhanced health care,” notes Urgent Care Committee chair Susan Samson in the update. With Alberta Health’s approval of the business plan, future steps will involve securing a physical space for the clinic and operational planning. Samson said a timeline on the approval process is hard to predict. The update can be read in its entirety online at sylvanlake.ca/urgentcare.

Suspects wanted in early-morning apartment robbery STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake RCMP are asking for the public’s help in locating three suspects involved in a robbery at a Hinshaw Drive apartment on Sunday (Nov. 30). The victim was walking up stairs to his apartment at around 1:45 a.m. when he was attacked by a man who struck him in the face several times. The victim received a large gash on his chin as a result of the attack. Three suspects fled with jewelry and the victim’s car and car keys. The first suspect (pictured) is described as a Caucasian male with long, straight blonde hair and a full beard. Police say he has a normal voice, and was wearing a beige jacket, brown boots and blue jeans. His jacket has a green crest in the left chest area. The second suspect is described as

a Caucasian male with short hair of an unknown colour, and is said by police to be very muscular. He was wearing a jacket at the time of the incident, and didn’t speak. The third suspect is described as a short and skinny Caucasian female with a full-sleeve arm tattoo. She wore a red tank top, running shoes and dark blue sweat pants, and wasn’t wearing a jacket. The victim’s car, a four-door black 2014 Mazda2, bears the Alberta licence plate K65217. RCMP on Tuesday released a composite sketch of the first suspect, and are asking the public to contact them with information on any of the three suspects involved. Information may be provided by contacting the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment at 403-858-7200, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Mellisa Hollingsworth’s illustrious skeleton career came to a close at the end of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia in February, and for the first time in almost two decades, the 34-year-old Eckville native is now embracing life away from the track. Hollingsworth’s 19-year career took her all around the world, establishing herself as one of the sport’s best along the way. A bronze-medal win at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was just one of many career highlights that fuelled the competitive mentality and desire to succeed that she still carries today. “You can’t be afraid of failure — that’s the wrong kind of energy,” she said. “You have to take thing one day at a time, and if you have an ultimate goal, you surround yourself with people you want to be like who can help raise you up. “Maybe you’re not successful on the first try, but who is? Not very many people.” Now pursuing a career in real estate, Hollingsworth has spent more than a few years on the road traversing the globe and travelling from competition to competition. It was during those travels she says she learned the true value of teamwork. “You’re dealing with different personalities on your team, you’re travelling through Europe and you’re gone for five months and living out of a bag with people that you learn to get along with,” she said. “I was lucky that we had an amazing team with interesting characters through the 19 years. “I learned how to interact with them, and yet I was competing against them.” Hollingsworth first entered the sport at a time when it was relatively unknown, and before it was added to the Olympics fold. Since then, she’s seen it grow significantly, and she’s proud of

the role she played in its evolution. “I was able to evolve as the sport evolved, and it’s been an Olympic sport for four different Olympics now,” she said. “I’m most proud to (have been) a part of that.” Hollingsworth now shares her life story with audiences across the country, where she describes overcoming adversity with both personal determination and the support of others. She encourages people to support others in the same way she was supported throughout her career, in both victory and defeat. “That’s one thing I love to share with kids when I go into schools,” she said. “If you see someone who’s having a bad day, go and ask them what’s up, or be a bit chummy with them, because people don’t understand the power that they have with positivity.” After failing to reach the podium at her home Olympics in Vancouver in 2010, Hollingsworth felt like she’d let her country down. Support from every corner of the country, however, quickly helped her get back on her feet and continue doing what she did best. “It’s pretty easy to beat yourself up, and you want to crawl into a hole and never re-surface,” she said. “To my surprise, there were thousands of letters that came in from Canada saying how proud (people) were of their Olympic athletes, regardless of being on that Olympic podium.” Hollingsworth says she’s proud of all she accomplished in the sport, and greatly values what it’s taught her about life both on and off the track. She’s also grateful for the life it gave her. “The people you get to meet along the way and the lessons that you learn — it’s all about the memories that you’ve made,” she said. “I think it’s been a pretty cool life.”

My Best Friend’s Closet an alternative way of shopping for clothes JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Women and children entered the big walkin closet known as My Best Friend’s Closet at Gospel Chapel Nov. 22, where they happily modelled outfits and picked through a variety of clothing to take home. At this event, there were no price tags attached to any of the clothes. If the outfit fit, the ladies wore it home. “The pressure isn’t there when you don’t have to pay money,” said Ashley Butcher, who attended to look for a new outfit. “You just get to graze. You feel very comfortable, and there’s no feeling of not wanting to look at something because you don’t want to buy an extra large.” Kelly Mykyte, who founded My Best Friend’s Closet, said her husband helped her with the idea as she has a love for clothes and felt driven to share her passion for fashion with others by helping them find clothes they need at no charge. “I really love fashion and clothes,” Mykyte said. “I wanted to do something good with my obsession with clothes.” During the event, there was no limit on what women could try on and take home. It was clear they were having a great time co-

ordinating outfits with each other. Some of the women peruse the selection of clothing while making use of the occasion to get to know, and socialize with, one another, Mykyte said. Others, she added, may have spent their budgeted money on clothes for their children, and come to find clothes for themselves. “It might be a tough month or they’ve used all their money for their kids’ clothes, and they are fine, they just can’t afford that new outfit,” Mykyte said. “When they come to My Best Friend’s Closet, all can benefit.” Mykyte said she’s sometimes wondered whether anyone really needs anything from her vast collection of clothing. Then she’s received phone calls from people in need of help. “I’ve been sort of discouraged sometimes because I feel like does anyone actually need this stuff, and then someone will call and ... it’s exactly what they need,” she said. Mykyte is inviting anyone in need of new clothes or a new outfit to arrange an appointment with her by calling 403-391-1148. “We want to show that we care and that we’re out to help people,” she said. “I think that as long as you’ve helped one person, you’ve succeeded.”

New outlook the inspiration for More’s latest exhibit STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Dave More’s Vanishing Point exhibit is currently on display at Sunworks in Red Deer.

JEFF STOKOE/RED DEER ADVOCATE

Benalto artist Dave More has always been intrigued by Canadian skies — so much so that he’s made them the focus of his most recent exhibit currently on display in Red Deer. Vanishing Point features 13 of More’s climate change-related works, borne of his observation that the sky may not be as friendly as he once thought. That particular revelation came to More on July 14, 2000 — the day a tornado killed 12 people at a campground beside Pine Lake. “I was out painting that day, and the sky became this apocalyptic thing that I wound up painting,” said More. “It turned out I actually painted the cloud or one of the clouds that formed to become the tornado.” That particular painting remains in More’s own private collection, and isn’t part of Vanishing Point, which is currently housed at Sunworks in downtown Red Deer. It did, however, provide the inspiration for plenty of his other works. “In the past, I’ve been painting skies as these benign, beautiful cathedrals in the sky, and everything was lovely,” he said. “They were just sort of a symbol of the prairie, and suddenly they were killing us.” For years, More struggled to portray his new outlook through

his work, but in 2010, he finally came to terms with it, and began creating what would eventually become Vanishing Point. “These paintings have a lot of symbols in them,” he said. “There will this massive storm passing, and it’s interesting because the viewer can either interpret it as the storm has just passed, or it’s coming. That’s the nature of the reality we’re facing.” He hopes his paintings will help awaken people’s minds to the very real threat of climate change. “(There are) little hints of symbolism of what we’re used to, what we hold dear and what is tradition, but being threatened,” he said. “It’s kind of an artistic way of making a statement in that sense.” While More considers the exhibit to be “all Canadian” — portraying scenes from Quebec, New Brunswick and all across the prairies — many of the paintings are locally influenced. The Medicine River, Blindman Valley and a small abandoned church near Eckville are just some of the local features that find themselves part of More’s work. Vanishing Point was presented to the public on Nov. 8 with about 200 people attending throughout the day. The exhibit is on display in the Coconut Room, located in the Sunworks upstairs area. Downstairs is a separate exhibit featuring 17 of More’s forest- and garden-related works. Both are open to the public. Vanishing Point wraps up Jan. 3.

Students learn foundational skills in anti-bullying presentation JASMINE O’HALLORAN–HAN SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

École Our Lady of the Rosary School students participated in an interactive presentation and learned how to deal with bullying Nov. 19. Through the presentation, Abbey Cruikshank, public awareness co-ordinator for Central Alberta Refugee Effort (CARE), discussed topics such as friendship, the definition of bullying, where bullying can take place and the difference between bullying and disagreements. By watching a Dr. Seuss video that emphasized not excluding others just because they are different, and by answering questions on what bullying is, students learned of the importance of kindness. “The hope is that they will learn how to be kind in general,” Cruikshank said. “We hope that they will carry (kindness with) them through everything and every interaction that they have, and to always think about being kind first, and then deal with any situation that comes up.” Cruikshank said she wants students to learn to recognize their feelings in a safe place so they will be equipped to deal with them in a positive way, and not just keep quiet about how they feel. She also said bullying extends beyond school walls and is a community responsibility. “I think taking care of the issues of bullying is a community effort,” Cruikshank said. “It’s a community issue and it needs to be dealt with in a community way. The school is a great resource and a great centre, but it is a community effort.” The presentation ended with the recognition of Gr. 1 student Shay-Lynn Harkins for her kind gesture to another student recently. When she noticed another girl alone and crying, Harkins invited the girl to play with her and her friends. “I asked if I could help the little girl and she said yes,” Harkins said. “She wanted to be alone for a couple minutes, but then she came and played.”

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON The Christmas Season is upon us bringing with it a vast potpourri of thought, emotion and experience. For some it’s full of ritual, memories, family, food and joy. For others, it’s lonely, empty and depressing— for a variety of reasons. We live on a planet that is broken and breaking more and more with each year. We have no answers that make a lasting effect. No one is able to find the right switch or the perfect formula to turn things around. That’s why Christmas happened. We don’t know the date, but we celebrate the event on the December 25. But what are we celebrating? The birth of a baby…but not just any baby! We wouldn’t know the story at all except for the Bible. There we read about shepherds, wise men, a young couple trying to stay warm in a stable while giving birth to a son.

Angels show up to sing, and a star lingers overhead. This is not just another birth! The story tells us that the angel said to Joseph, “you shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.” “Sins” is a brief description for the brokenness, and loss, and pain, and suffering that we experience on planet earth. Another text says that He was “made flesh and dwelt among us.” He came to bring joy, peace and good will to men. He is the reason we celebrate. May this time of year bring you the joy that it is truly all about. Santa can’t bring that gift, but that’s what Jesus is all about. May you be blessed by his presence this season. Stuff a Bus organizers hoping for another successful year STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A simple concept has resulted in literally bus loads of food and Christmas gifts being collected for Sylvan Lake charities over the past 14 years. Stuff a Bus, put on by Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Sylvan Lakebased bus drivers, will return to Sylvan Lake on Saturday (Dec. 6) to collect food, toys and money for the Sylvan Lake Food Bank and the Christmas Bureau. Organizers are hoping this year will be the event’s most successful ever. “The seats are usually filled on the buses,” said driver and event organizer Wayne Stade. “That’s the idea of stuffing a bus.” Stade created the event about 14 years ago after being inspired by another driver’s similar event in Red Deer. It’s fairly simple to organize and put on, yet generates plenty of support for important community organizations, he feels.

And town residents have always proved immensely supportive. “People are willing to give at Christmas time, and it’s an easy way for them to give,” said Stade. People who see the buses typically pick up extra food or items while they’re inside the grocery store, and drop it off at the bus on their way out, said Stade. Participating stores have also been supportive and co-operative, he added. “The businesses are really good to let us park there,” he said. School buses will be parked and manned by drivers at Sobeys, No-Frills and Walmart from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Extremely cold weather caused last year’s event to be rescheduled to a week later than planned. Stade doesn’t anticipate that will be the case this year, and said weather “has to be really bad” for it to be moved to a later date. About $3,000 in food and cash was raised last year, along with a large number of toys for the Christmas Bureau.

Impressive season for Lakers junior girls volleyball SUBMITTED SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

The HJ Cody Lakers junior girls volleyball team recently wrapped up its impressive season, which saw them end league play in third place, qualifying them for playoffs. The first set of playoff games had them facing Ponoka, in which they had a very commanding win of 2-0. That brought them to face the first-place Wetaskiwin team, who hadn’t lost a single game all season (8-0). In the first set, the Lakers lost by two points, but then won the second set, bringing them to the always-tense third set, in which they held their own, only losing by two points. By beating Ponoka earlier in the evening, the Lakers qualified to go to finals the following week and try for one of the top two spots in order for a chance to play in provincials. Nov. 13 was the final for the playoffs. Four teams played in two different schools — the top two teams played at one school and the third- and fourth-placed teams were at another, playing to see who went to the bronze medal game and who went to the gold medal game. The Lakers were up against Lacombe going three sets with them, but in the end lost by three points in the third set. This had them staying in the school they just played in to sit anxiously and await the arrival of the losing team

from the other school to see who they would play in the bronze medal match. Much to the surprise of the players, coach and parents, the Wetaskiwin team walked into the gym. Coach Sarah Steinbach could be overheard saying to her team, “This is our redemption match, ladies!” The Wetaskiwin team did take the first set with another really close score. The Lakers then regrouped under the leadership of their coach and won the second match, again going to a nail-biting third set. The Lakers came out on top, fully controlling the third set and leading to a huge celebration on the court and from the parents in the stands. “Our JV ladies had a very successful season built on the girls’ willingness to push themselves and continually improve each one of their skills,” said Steinbach. “We were a team of 13 ladies which made the competition to see the court that much more demanding. Each one of these girls contributions lead to the success they experienced in playoffs. The final game of the season (the bronze medal game) felt more like the gold medal game, and the girls should be very proud of all the success they experienced this season.” Players and parents would like to send a huge thank you to Sarah Steinbach for her time, efforts and commitment to them all season.

The HJ Cody Lakers junior girls volleyball team ended an impressive season with a bronze medal. Back row: Coach Sarah Steinbach, Regan Eisler, Ceanna Muller, Emma Dunsmore, Morgan Lockyer, Jessie Stormoen. Front row: Sara Vick, Erin Matthews, Bailey Kentz, Meg Meier. Missing: Maddy Dodman, Abby Tucker, Kaitlyn Simpson, SUBMITTED Danielle Smith.

Month-long Movember fundraiser comes to a close STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

McWade, Deshon Lennard and Dwayne Stoesz, who joined myself, Joe Furman and ‘Mo Sista’ Shannon Smelt to form the Sylvan Lake News Movember team; and to Serenella Salon and Spa and Sylvan Lake Barber Shop, who provided free shaves to our Mo Bros at the end of the month. Credit must also be given to the many other groups, organizations and individuals who held their own fundraisers and Movember-related activities. Mo Bros and Mo Sistas from all corners of the community worked hard to support the cause! But it must be noted that even though Movember has come to an end, the problems it seeks to address persist. Prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health issues don’t simply disappear at the end of November, and require attention very much year-round. Visit ca.movember.com to find out how Movember aims to address those issues, and learn of the many ways in which you can get involved.

A four-week frenzy of of moustache growing has come to an end as we bid farewell to Movember for another year. We’re happy to announce that our Sylvan Lake News Movember team raised more than $1,200 in the monthlong fundraiser for men’s health initiatives. And quite a journey it’s been. More than 30 days ago, we set out with the goal of raising money — any amount — for the Movember cause. With the participation of some hardworking teammates, and the generosity of those who supported us, we managed to exceed our own expectations, and along with other participating groups in the community, helped to keep the Movember conversation going. At times it wasn’t easy. And at Joe Furman was one of the Sylvan Lake News Movember team members who enjoyed a free shave times, the annoyance of having a moustache seemed to make simple courtesy of Serenella Salon and Spa at the end of last month. Making a difference

- An enthusiastic group of Lighthouse Christian Academy high school students, led by their principal Mr. Krause, recently served the inner city of Los Angeles with the Dream Center ministry, where approximately 80,000 individual and family needs are met through food, medical, shelter, addiction and spiritual help, which is freely offered each month. Upon returning home, the students were encouraged to make a difference by serving in their local community. SUBMITTED

The checkstop, put on by the Sylvan Lake RCMP and Victim Services Unit, will see motorists stopped on 47 Ave. between Shoppers Drug Mart and McDonald’s, giving them the opportunity to donate money, toys and food. Lions recognized for exemplary sportsmanship STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Three Sylvan Lake Bantam Lions football players were chosen to attend a Central Alberta Football League banquet for each team’s allstars in Red Deer last month. Burkley Theriault, Carson Lethbridge and Sebastian Auger were joined by coaches David Berg and Vic Sloboda for the occasion, where, on behalf of their team, they received the Players’ Choice Sportsmanship award for displaying the highest level of sportsmanship

among the league’s 13 teams. “We are very honoured and proud of our players, as (sportsmanship) is something our coaches are always striving to promote with our players,” said team manager Diana Zenert. “This clearly shows it’s working.” The Lions received the award as a result of votes lodged by other teams in the league. Each team was represented at the banquet by a number of players determined by their final league position. The Lions finished sixth out of 13 teams, and were allowed to send three all-star players.

Spencer’s Game of Thrones surpasses fundraising goal STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A unique fundraiser that saw toilets mysteriously appear on some Sylvan Lake lawns over the past six weeks has now come to a close, but not before raising a whopping $4,600 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The Game of Thrones was the brainchild of Coreen Spencer, who created it as a means of raising the $2,500 needed to fund her participation in the 2015 Ride to Conquer Cancer bike ride. The game required Sylvan Lake residents to pay a $25 fee to have one of three colourfully-painted toilets removed from their property, before being given the chance to assign it to another property at a cost of $50. That process repeated until weather made it difficult to do so. At the end of it all, Spencer nearly doubled her fundraising goal. “It was not uncommon to be moving one, two or three toilets a night, or at least one a couple of times a night,” she said. “A couple of people even hoped to get a throne back because they had more than one person they wanted to send it to.” After the toilets were painted and decorated, strong community

participation quickly followed. Some people were perplexed by the appearance of a colourful toilet on their front lawn, but the majority of toilet recipients were happy to play along, according to Spencer. “For the most part, people were very receptive and had some good laughs over their new lawn furniture,” she said. “Sometimes people would be annoyed that a toilet showed up on their lawn, but once I explained that a friend sent it to them as they thought they would also enjoy the game, they were much more receptive.” The toilets, fastened to pallets for maximum stability, were transported silently in the night by Spencer with the help of her husband David. Together, the pair managed to place them on the lawns of unsuspecting Sylvan Lake residents without getting caught. “We had several close calls of people just coming home, just leaving or sitting in their living rooms while we crept around their yard,” said Spencer. “Several times I told people I felt like a naughty teenager up to no good.” Because of the fun and money that was generated by the fundraiser, Spencer decided to extend it past its initially planned end date of the town’s first major snowfall.

Now finally over, it’s proved more successful than she could have ever imagined. “It has been a great time, and I am very thankful for all the people who so willingly took part in the Game of Thrones,” she said. Money raised goes directly to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, and ensures her participation in the 230-kilometre Ride to Conquer Cancer bike ride, which winds through the

foothills of Alberta in August of next year. At press time, Spencer was leading the province in fundraising. She’ll participate in the ride for the fifth time. Further donations are still being accepted, and may be made by searching Spencer’s name on the 2015 Alberta Ride to Conquer Cancer website.

Nova Bouchard reads the Sylvan Lake News from the comfort of a ‘throne’ delivered to her front lawn in Coreen Spencer’s Game of Thrones fundraiser for the Alberta Cancer Foundation.

An overview of important tax savings for Canadian families BLAINE CALKINS, MP WETASKIWIN SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Workshop

- Nanci Valley and Patricia Poirier were accompanied by their little ones as they learned how to make homemade baby food during an infant nutrition workshop at Community Partners Nov. 25. JASMINE O’HALLORAN-HAN

Over the last month, there has been a lot of commentary surrounding the recent tax cuts announced by Prime Minister Harper. These cuts, as many of you know, are geared towards families — this is a positive step for hard-working Canadian families. Here are some facts about the initiatives: For one, the Family Tax Cut or Income Splitting will allow higher-earning spouses to transfer up to $50,000 of taxable income to their spouses who are in a lower tax bracket. Additionally, this credit is capped at $2,000 for couples with kids under the age of 18, and will be claimable in the 2014 tax year.

Second, our government is increasing the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB). For kids under the age of six, starting Jan. 1, 2015, parents will receive a benefit of $160 per month for EACH child under six — an increase of $60 dollars per month. This amounts to a benefit of almost $2,000 per child. Third, we have expanded the UCCB to children ages six through 17. Starting Jan. 1, 2015, parents will receive a benefit of $60 dollars per month for kids aged six to 17, totalling $720 dollars per child for the year. Fourth, we are increasing the Child Care Expense Deduction Limit by $1,000 dollars — effective in the 2015 tax year. This means for children under the age of seven, parents can now claim $8,000. For Children seven through 16, parents can

claim $5,000, and $11,000 for children who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. Additionally, last month the Prime Minister announced our intention to double the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit and make it refundable. These measures are a positive step forward for Canadian families, but the opposition disagrees. If we examine some of the numbers you can see clearly the opposition parties are offside with Canadian families. For example, a couple that is a two-income couple with a seven-year-old and a three-yearold, with one parent making $95,000 and the other earning $25,000, the tax measures our government has announced and introduced since 2006 would save this family about $7,285 in 2015. Furthermore, by calculating JUST the UCCB measures for this family starting in 2015 until the oldest child reaches 17 years of age, this family would benefit almost $14,000 dollars. Justin Trudeau has said that our plan will not benefit single parents. He is misleading Canadians. 30 SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Beginning with the end in mind

The Christmas tree is up, lights twinkling, all bright and lovely in the bay window of my living room. The lace curtains, which aren’t really curtains at all, but lengths of lace bought cheaply by me at IKEA about 100 years ago, are gone, replaced by really good, expensive window coverings that amaze people, me included. The tired, dirty blue rug in the living room has been torn up and gone to a place where such tired, dirty blue rugs go, never to be seen again. In its place is my new floor made of veneer or something, all shiny, new and clean and hardly walked on at all, and definitely not urinated on by a misbehaving puppy. And I am proud and happy and pretty sure I didn’t spend too much because of the deal I got. Well, the guy said it was a deal, and who am I to judge?

I am sitting at the piano, on my brand new piano bench, which has been a work in progress work thing in the garage for several months. I am dressed simply, but nicely, playing Christmas carols effortlessly and my fingers glide over the keys like I know what I’m doing and all my latent musical talent is bursting forth sort of naturally, like it is supposed to. I have the old coal oil lamp, the one that apparently belonged to my mom, lit, and it casts a really cool glow over me and the piano bench and the new floor and the tree and it is all good. Okay, so none of the above has really happened and, who knows, some of it may never happen, but in his book, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey says, “begin with the end in mind.” And, so there you go! I’m beginning, at least. After all, you

gotta start somewhere. I thought about getting the tree out the other day when the three little boys came to visit, but other things got in the way, and before I knew it, their mom was back to scoop them up and take them to their skating thing. I was left with a basement full of toys, and three dozen slightly burned cookies — minus about a dozen that got eaten, some by me, some by other adults, but mostly by two little boys. The baby is only seven months old and too young to eat slightly burned double chocolate chip cookies, eating instead some concoction of banana and apple sauce,

fed to him by me with this little tiny plastic coated spoon that was almost, but not quite, hidden in my knife and fork drawer. He certainly gobbled up the stuff anyway, sitting on my knee, covering me and him with the gooey concoction and rewarding me in the end with a big, wide open-mouth grin. “You are so cute,” I tell him, sounding so grandma like, all mushy and gooey, kind of like the baby food. But seriously, I can’t believe how happy I feel when he nestles his dear little head in my shoulder. It’s like nothing else matters much! Anyway, as far as playing Christmas carols, my music teacher gave me three new ones to learn. They are not new, of course, but old, but the point is, they are new to me and, at this moment, which still happens to be in November, I cannot play them

very well at all. But, I’m figuring by my next lesson, I will rock! And then I will learn three more, and before Christmas arrives, I will skim through the book, and will be labeled by friends and families as a Christmas carol player extraordinaire. True, I have that objective every year, and somehow it never happens because I get all busy with other stuff and am exhausted and flop on the couch to watch another Christmas special on the Hallmark channel, managing to find the Christmas spirit through stuff that may or may not be make believe. I like to think the stuff I watch is real and true and good, and Christmas magic does really exist. Well, actually, I don’t think, I know. It is true! I am a believer!

- Sparks and Brownies visited Sylvan Lake Lodge last week, where they spent time making Christmas ornaments, singing Christmas songs and chatting with Lodge residents. Plenty of new friendships were made throughout the evening. SUBMITTED
