Donations needed to fill hampers BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
With about 400 Christmas hampers to be packed this year, now is the time to donate food, toys, cash and more to the Creston Ministerial Association’s annual project. For over 40 years, the association has filled hampers each Christmas season — with a peak of 485 requests in 2012 — to offer some holiday cheer to those in need. And last year, it took about 300 volunteers lifting, packing and sorting to make it all happen. “We provide an exceptional experience to people coming to the rec centre,” said Tom Greentree, Erickson Covenant Church pastor and ministerial association president. “Last year, we had an incredible volunteer turnout.” Volunteers may come solo or in groups — sometimes large ones. To help with organization, groups should contact Rev. Shelley StickelMiles of the Trinity United Church at 250-428-4015. Far more significant than a good time for volunteers, though, is the work they are doing. “The other side that is important to me is that it’s our own community we’re serving,” Greentree said. The information will also become a valuable planning tool for other community groups, including the Town of Creston’s Official Community Plan that will be updated in 2015. While the Better Life Project is specific to residents from Yahk to Riondel, it is part of an international movement to survey people about their quality of life. The “Happiness Index” started in the Asian country of Bhutan, but is spreading around the globe to countries including England and the United States. Paper copies of the survey are available at many locations, including Kootenay Employment Services, the Creston Valley Public Library, Creston and District Community Complex, Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and local schools. December 5 2014 is International Volunteer Day
PAWS would not like to single out one wonderful individual to honour this month, but express our thanks and appreciation for everyone, young and old, past and present (and future for those yet to step forward!) Whether at home baking for our bake sales, getting ready for a concession, distributing posters, or finding doggie costumes for the upcoming annual Santa Pics: we are thankful for every minute you are able to spend on our behalf. I am not forgetting the caring souls who find their way to the shelter - come hot or cold, wind or snow - to care for the animals, clean out kennels, and prepare food. No one flinches at having to walk dogs outside when its snowing; we all love to play in the wading pools in the summer, but snow is different! The cat volunteers who brave claws from frightened cats brought in to the shelter having been discarded and cuddle them back to being adoptable. Those who foster a litter of tiny kittens found out in the cold. Those folks adapting their skills to caring for the found rabbit or goat! Along with those maintaining the shelter, they do it all. I must not forget the office people who man the phone and listen to the pleas to find their lost pet and many other dilemmas. And to finish, the volunteer board of directors for giving up their time to keep PAWS operating and toeing the bureaucratic line. A truly remarkable bunch. Thank you to all and to those in Creston who make it a great place to live and volunteer.

Hampers
From page 1 In streamlining the hamper process, only those who want a hamper will receive one; well-meaning friends or neighbours have, in the past, signed up people who weren’t interested. Anyone wanting a hamper simply has to call a Creston Ministerial Association church or social agency by Dec. 12. The hampers can be picked up at the Creston and District Community Complex on Dec. 16, after volunteers have spent Dec. 15 sorting and organizing donations (which should be brought to the rec centre by noon). The hampers also include non-food items, such as books, through the Creston Valley Public Library and Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy’s Book Under Every Tree campaign, which collects new books at a variety of locations. Children’s toys can also be donated at Pyramid Building Supplies — simply visit the store, pull a tag with an age and gender from the Christmas tree, buy an appropriate gift, and return it unwrapped to Pyramid. The ministerial association purchases gift cards for perishable food items, such as turkeys, and the program usually costs close to $25,000, so cash donations are vital to its success. Last year, the Advance donated over $9,000 received through its community Christmas card, in which donors’ name are printed in its Christmas edition. This year, the Crest View Village Auxiliary, along with food and toys,

Joanna Wilson, now starting her 10th year, and I welcome our new and independent councillors,” he said. “A week ago, we went through a two-day council orientation facilitated by Dr. Gord McIntosh from Vancouver Island and his comment to me midway through our 12-hour meeting was, ‘You have a solid and well-rounded, independentthinking team.’ For this I thank each of you as citizens who voted for this great council.” Louie acknowledged that the LKB election included elements

The children, he said, served as his inspiration. “We must treat each child in the community as if they are a chief,” he said. He also gave thanks to his supporters, including his wife and children. “Saying thank you just doesn’t seem sufficient,” he said. “I also
want to thank Mayor Toyota for becoming a mentor and a close friend.” Louie and Toyota each referred to the importance of a document signed by their councils in 2010, a Memorandum of Understanding and Friendship. Among its stated purposes, it says, “The parties have mutual respect for each other’s mandates, policies, values and areas of jurisdiction. “The parties share mutual interest in sound governance of the region and recognize that each have distinct authorities and responsibilities toward their members and residents and acknowledge that the interests of all persons living in the communities are best served by working together in the spirit of co-operation.”

Zen Essentials teacher’s first book of poetry BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Kuya Minogue, resident teacher at the Creston Zen Centre and Advance columnist, has released her first book of poetry. Zen Essentials is the culmination of more than a decade of writing that started when Minogue was taking a course.
“In 2003 I never imagined I was a poet,” she said last week. “I was a published writer, but certainly not a poet. I took a Zen writing course, writing every day — faithfully. Then, about three years later, I read a piece that I had written and a friend said, ‘This is a poem.’ ” It was that observation that made her look at her writing in a different way.

another startling development. A newly written scientific paper discusses the potential uses for a form of graphite (the stuff in pencils — remember them?) called graphene. It is an extraordinary material with many unusual properties. It can be made into sheets thin enough that scientists are referring to it as the first two-dimensional object. It is also the best conductor of electricity, apparently, and has peculiar properties that might allow it to be developed for use in storage cells. It’s impossible to know what role graphene might play in our future, but advances in other fields have been remarkable. The efforts to find practical alternate energy sources that might be translated into largescale use might not be quite as organized and intense as the Manhattan Project that led, for better or worse, to huge advancements in nuclear power, but they are almost certainly more important. While it seems like a (nonpetroleum-carrying) pipe dream, this desperate search for clean energy, the simple fact is that energy is created all around us, right down to a molecular and even atomic level. There doesn’t seem to be an inherent reason — even the objections of traditional energy producers — why other sources won’t be tapped, ones that don’t pollute to the same extent, and that are renewable, or even inexhaustible. These days we live in, I think, aren’t as dark as many would like us to believe. And a brighter future might be closer than we think. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.

Candidate says she understood financial report To the Editor: For the record, according to Lorne Eckersley’s column (“This is the Life: Balance created”, Nov. 20 Advance) I had a “bizarre misunderstanding of town finances.” That is entirely untrue. What is bizarre is that certain people have not read the town finances that are available and believe they are something different than what is available in print from the town website. Especially Mr. Toyota — at the mayoral candidates’ forum, he was entirely unaware of the total of the invoices over $25,000 (totalling close to $18 million), listed in the 2013 financial statement (although he signed off on them), and instead just resorted to what was listed in the 2013 annual report and claimed I was wrong. I look forward to a retraction of Mr. Eckersley’s statement, and maybe, for transparency to the public, a printed copy of that list of invoices over $25,000. Rhonda Barter (MacLellan) Creston Following is Advance publisher Lorne Eckersley’s response to Barter’s letter: At the mayoralty candidates’ forum, Rhonda Barter referred to a financial page from the Town of Creston website, implying that its $18 million total indicated out of control, or at the least, mysterious, spending. She said she had been unable to receive satisfactory answers about the information. An explanation on the prior page of the financial report indicates that many of line items are not actual expenditures, but reconciliations. The first, and largest, transaction on the list is a transfer of $4.6 million to Raymond James Ltd., an investment firm (most town funds are held in secure interest-bearing accounts until they are needed to cover expenses). The second-largest figure was a $4.34 million payment to the contractor for a budgeted upgrade to the waste water treatment plant, a large portion of which was covered by an infrastructure grant. A large portion of a $4-million transfer to the Regional District of Central Kootenay was money collected by the Town of Creston on behalf of the RDCK, as were a number of other transfers, including the provincial school levy. Only a portion of a Town of Creston property tax collections is actually designated for town use. Other items on the list included payroll deductions for federal and provincial taxes and the municipal pension plan. All payments on the list are included elsewhere in the audited financial statement. Citizens who do not understand accounting statements can get detailed information from the town’s financial department on request.

New year going to be extraordinary
To the Editor: It is now T minus 319 days and counting until our next federal election on Oct. 19, 2015, which could very well be the most historic in Canadian history (although provincial and municipal elections are just as important). As for me, I am a conservative activist and progressive thinker. In the not-toodistant future, I believe we will eliminate poverty, hunger, disease, famine, war, pollution, global warming, racism, bigotry and anti-Semitism. But first, we must defeat terrorism, in particular, ISIS (Islamic State, formerly Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham), which is the most evil and sinister enemy since fascism, along with its extremist ideology that has nothing to do with the Islam faith. In this way, world peace can be preserved for future generations. I also believe in complete equality between men and women, helping the poor and destitute, defending freedom and democracy, and coming to the defence of those in society who are unable to fend for themselves. To conclude my letter, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in Creston a merry Christmas, regardless of your faith. Peace on Earth, good will to all men, women and children of the world. Have a happy St. Nicholas Day (Dec. 6); I will see you at the Santa Claus Parade. And happy Hanukkah (Dec. 17-24)! Best wishes in 2015. It will be an extraordinary year, indeed! Allan Clement Creston
Human error will always be with us To the Editor: (Re: “Pharmacist Has Support”, Nov. 20) I was struck by the kindness and compassion expressed by Alex Ewashen in his letter regarding the recent tragedy of a lost loved one and the pharmacist involved. I do not know either party, but I feel the same. Mike Ramaradhya, I too urge you not to abandon your profession, nor must any other persons involved. Human error has been with us since the beginning of time and I daresay, will always be with us. Those of us who walk this earth are not immune to committing human errors, nor are we immune to being victims of the same. Our history is full of human error, especially by those who provide service and care to the human race: doctors, nurses, paramedics, firemen, policemen, even airline pilots, bus drivers, train engineers — not to mention millions of motor vehicle drivers such as myself. Several years ago, members of my family suffered the loss of a loved one through an error in medication, a 59-year-old wife, mother and grandmother admitted to hospital with fatal side effects in the way of lung damage. Within a week, the ventilator she had been on was shut off. Not a word had been said to her about her fatal condition, but as her young family said goodbye, tears rolled down her cheeks — she knew the end had come. The devastated family, although full of anguish at the
untimely death of their loved one, chose not to seek vengeance on the internal medicine specialist responsible for her care. They knew that years would be spent in anger and pain and not a shred of it would bring her back. One final thought: If all the people who have committed a human error were banished forever from their work and professions, how many good, life-saving people would we have lost by now? As Alexander Pope wrote so long ago, “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” My condolences to the Lambert family — may you find it in your heart to forgive and thus find the peace and comfort offered to you in your sorrow. Protection for seniors inadequate To the Editor: (Re: “MLA Must Deal with Increasing Pad Rent”, Oct. 16 Advance) One in five seniors in British Columbia rent their homes. Fifty percent of them struggle to pay their rent, and approximately 12,000 seniors in B.C. spend more than half their income on housing. At the moment, there is inadequate protection for seniors living in manufactured homes, as well as assisted living facilities and seniors supportive housing in the current versions of the Residential Tenancy Act and Manufactured Home Act. Both could be strengthened and rebalanced to better protect senior tenants. To that effect, the BC NDP has raised this issue in the last two provincial elections, and was part of the reason we have repeatedly called for an independent seniors’ representative. Because it would be inappropriate to discuss personal financial matters through this public medium, I encourage anyone who is experiencing difficulty with housing, or having issues with their landlord to contact my office by their preferred method (www.michellemungall.ca or 1-877-388-4498). My staff and I are able to assist you in navigating your tenant rights, as well as connect you to community and provincial resources providing additional assistance. Being proper is a choice To the Editor: (Re: “The Teen Take: Do you Know the Proper Woman?”, Nov. 13 Advance) What if men and women acknowledged the reality of, and responsibility for, their influence on each other — instead of consensually descending into mutual emotional disaster? What if, instead of tempting each other like devils, men and women didn’t wanted to trip and crash one another? What if men and women felt divine love inside, and, instead of using their freedom and power to spiritually assault each other, they wanted to help and protect? What if, instead of using sexuality as merely entertainment, men and women freely chose to keep it in its natural healthy environment? What if sexual stimulation — at any level — wasn’t a matter for business, ego, power, the public, or competition with friends? See PROPER, page 8

Kettle helped RDCK Area B To the editor: (Re: “This is the Life: Balance Created”, Nov. 20) John Kettle put the “people” back in politics. He set the bar for all Regional District of Central Kootenay directors for communication with his constituents. He lived on his phone. He attended thousands of local meetings. He invented the newsletter for his area, to give residents a place to promote their activities and get the latest information on rural issues — something the local paper does not do effectively. If you think fire protection for all residents, safe water and community halls and parks are not “quality of life” issues, then you can’t appreciate John’s 12 years of service. If you don’t enjoy driving on newly paved surfaces in Lister, Canyon and Erickson, then you can shoot your mouth off about John being friendly to the provincial Liberals. If you’ve never run for office yourself because you don’t care that much, then you need to think before you write criticism in the paper. John Kettle sheltered all of Area B, all 5,000 residents, under his big, black hat. Thanks, John! Signe Miller Canyon
The Kootenay Lake Annual BC Family Day Fishing Derby 2015 has been CANCELLED due to an extreme decline in fish stock. After much discussion we, as concerned anglers, have had to make the very difficult decision to postpone the Kootenay Lake BC Family Day Fishing Derby 2015 until at least 2016. As many of you are aware for the last few years fishing on Kootenay Lake has been getting progressively worse to a point that now you are lucky if you can catch a fish over 3 pounds that is not full of worms. How did it get this far? Last January there was a lot of talk about the IHN virus found in the Kokanee and Jeff Burrows, Senior Fish Biologist for the Kootenays (250-354-6928), claimed, “That sort of scenario will sort itself out over time”. Let’s hope he’s right! Now the lake is practically empty of anglers and fish, a real blow to our economy. The results from our 2014 survey estimate that close to half a million dollars was spent over a three-day period from our derby alone. Not only is this an environmental issue but also a big economic issue for the area. Please note that we do not run the derby for profit and all our derby revenue is donated. www.ctrcanadaderby.com

Inconvenience was worth it for upgraded community complex
At lunch the other day, some of the staff were reminiscing about the times before and during construction and having a bit of a laugh. Yes, we have finally reached the stage where you can laugh, meaning enough time has transpired where humour replaces horror. We still remember just prior to construction how small exploratory holes were opened up in a few places in walls and ceilings and we griped how it looked tacky having these holes not covered because, hey, we were always proud of the place. Little did we know at that time that when the ceiling was completely torn off, you really didn’t notice the hole anymore. We all supported the decision made from the get-go — to keep the facility open to the public as best as possible throughout the process. I know there are a few wedding albums out there that show the Creston Room reception being held on plywood floors with no ceiling but it was also amazing how understanding most people were and how you could decorate a warehouse setting and make it look pretty good. Remember how our programmers Andrea and Brooke were sequestered in the old building inspector’s office across the lobby from the main office? You would see their bright shiny faces through the windows, occasionally with dust masks on, and eventually really close together when their office got sliced in half to make the data
room. We also laugh (because it wasn’t us) at the maintenance foreman’s office under the bleachers where you didn’t need to put your lunch in the fridge and you occasionally arrived to find a
There is an endless supply of different types of homes available for purchase, including condos, townhouses, detached homes and acreages. The key is to decide what you can afford and which amenities you prefer before heading out shopping for a new home. Your best first step is to seek the advice of a mortgage professional and get preapproved on a mortgage. That way, you already know what your price range is — and, therefore, which type of home you’re in the market for — before you begin shopping. Budgeting is also an important part of preparing yourself for the purchase of a home. If you save for a down payment and upfront costs, such as closing costs and emergency reserves, much sooner, you’ll be sure to save enough to cover the many expenses facing a new homeowner, including moving, utility hook-ups, tools, maintenance supplies, window coverings and more. Once you have the money available to make your home purchase a reality, the next step is finding a good real estate agent to guide you in your purchase. The agent you choose will be able to help you weigh the following options to help decide what type of home is right for you: Condo A condo makes a great first home because it typically costs less than a townhouse or a detached home, which translates into a smaller down payment and mortgage payment. It can also be an excellent choice for an older person that still wants to own their own home, but doesn’t want some of the responsibili-
ties that come with it, like lawn care, clearing snow and maintenance. But there are, however, monthly strata fees you must take into consideration when budgeting for a condo.
ing so long. I still feel bad about that but luckily that person knows she can hold that chit on me until I am well into a nursing home and I can’t quip my way out of it. We had our own cross to bear in the admin office — from the massive sheet of plywood that had to be slid open and closed each day to serve patrons, to the pieces of concrete block we would find on our desks throughout the day right through to having to put someone on hold because you couldn’t hear them above the jackhammering, stapling and concrete sawing. We covered all the seasons, as well — from the battle station call to arms during a sudden downpour that had miniature tsunamis spreading across the Canyon or Erickson room floors to office temps sometimes in the nineties, right through to everyone protecting their under-desk ceramic heaters, waving others away with a ruler while hissing, “My Precious!” and a crazy look in their eyes. There are lots of construction tales, good and bad, beginning from when we dug the first geotech exploratory hole Oct. 30, 2007, through to today when we are in the midst of upgrading Rotacrest Hall. The bottom line is: Time eases all sorrows, you have to crack a few eggs to make a cake and every other applicable philosophical quote — we landed in a pretty good place. puddle of pop on your desk from someone’s spill on the bleacher seats that seeped through the cracks. I have to take my hat off to our fitness patrons and instructors who were in a constant state of flux; never knowing what room or temperature they were facing. It didn’t matter that staff were constantly sweeping or mopping; the fitness people always had dirty hands from doing floor exercises. At one point, they were working out in the Creston Room but in order to go to the washroom, they had to pass through a construction door and into an area that, because the front of the building was gone, was less than ideal temperature until you reached the powder room. Unfortunately, for one patron, the door latched behind and there she remained until the rest of the class started to wonder why it was tak-

Townhouse If the condo life is not your forte and you’re not looking for a big yard to maintain, a townhouse may be your best home purchase option. Townhouses can give you a little more room and some yard space, but at a lower cost than buying a fully detached home. Many townhouses also come with monthly maintenance fees unless they are freehold townhouses. In situations where you pay a monthly fee, however, you won’t have to worry about outdoor maintenance or snow removal. Detached Home If it’s privacy you’re seeking as well as a larger yard, a detached home is your ideal choice. The majority of homes in Creston would be considered single detached homes so they are a popular choice. With a detached home, you own the lot freehold and there are no strata fees. One thing to consider is the added cost and work of maintaining the home, caring for the yard and snow removal.
Acreage Acreages are similar to detached homes with the main difference being the size and location of the lot. Generally they are located out of town boundaries so property taxes can be considerably lower. One thing to take into consideration, though, is the added costs that come with this over owning a detached home in town. The home will most likely require its own septic system, water supply, more costly yard care and snow removal, and may be farther away from the conveniences of town. The upside is often more privacy, more room and often fewer restrictions on land use. Other Considerations The size of the home and property (if you decide not to opt for a condo) are also important things to consider before you head out shopping. While everyone has their dream home in mind, this is not always a practical purchase choice, especially if this is your first home purchase. When it comes to location, think about in which area or neighbourhood you’d like to make your purchase, and which home features are absolutely essential — including what you can live without and what aspects are entirely out of the question. Whichever home choice is right for you, home ownership is a truly fulfilling experience, and can be an excellent financial move. Buying for wine lovers easy in Creston Valley
Purchasing gifts for wine lovers is easier than you might think. They (or we!) tend not to be snobs, just regular folks who enjoy a glass of wine with their meal or social occasions. And they tend to enjoy local products, which makes it just that must easier.
La Dolce Vita Lorne Eckersley
Choices have expanded recently, with news from Skimmerhorn Winery that Al Hoag has added spirits to a lineup that already includes a good selection of wine and the popular port-style Old Koot. Earlier this year he fired up his copper still to produce Proof Positive, a spirit distilled from grapes, and Cherry Bounce, a kirsch flavoured with cherry juice, cinnamon and cloves. And now, with winter settling in, he’s added Apple Pie Moonshine! It is an eau de vie made from McIntosh apples, with cinnamon, cloves and a bit of brown sugar making it taste, as Al says, “like a slice of apple pie.”
The wine shop in Erickson is open through Dec. 21, Wednesday through Sunday, and also features the full Skimmerhorn selection of wines. Kootenay Crush white blend, Marechal Foch, the popular Foch-Pinot Noir blend called Devil’s Chair, Pinot Gris, Ortega and Autumn Tryst are all good choices. On a chilly day, the fireplace warms the room and adds ambience to the friendly welcome visitors always enjoy. Next door, the tasting room at Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery might be closed for the season, but there is plenty of activity going on behind the scenes. A harvest that was spectacular in quantity and quality is now being turned into wines that will be released next year. Fortunately, Baillie-Grohman wines are available in liquor stores throughout the area, and Creston’s BC Liquor Store has a fine display of its products right beside the VQA shelves. Available wines include Cab Franc and Pinot Noir Estate, both big-time award winners this year. The Cab Franc earned one of only five platinum medals in the 2014 BC Wine Awards. The Pinot Noir? No biggie — just a gold medal as the top Pinot Noir in the entire province! But wait, as the old TV ad used to say. There’s more! BG blends — Recolte Blanc

and Recolte Rouge — have become hugely popular and, let’s face it, there aren’t many wines that will pair up with your turkey dinner more nicely than lovely
Blanc de Noir that features a cranberry aroma! Grab a few bottles if you find them — they are sold out at the winery. More exciting news from BaillieGrohman owners Bob Johnson and Petra Flaa is that a sparkling wine — a Creston Valley first — is bottled, labelled and ready to go, pending a thumbs-up from the liquor control board. Bob says it might not be available until early in 2015, but it’s sure to be a hit — stock up when it hits the shelves in local stores! Finding wines made at Wynnwood Cellars, just north of Wynndel on Highway 21, is a little more challenging. A lot more actually, after a good year in the wine shop left it pretty much sold out. But a great harvest — with the maturing vineyards producing double the quantity from previous years, and with fantastic quality — bodes well for 2015 and beyond. I’m betting a call to the winery might allow the canny shopper to purchase a gift certificate or two to ensure the wine lovers on your list don’t miss out on new releases. Meanwhile, check out private liquor stores in the area and inquire about Wynnwood wines — you just might get lucky! As I’ve mentioned in the past, we buy nearly all our wine directly from wineries, so some of my recommendations aren’t always easy to find. But labels to look out for include Serendipity, Oliver Twist, River Stone, D’Angelo, Perseus, Burrowing Owl and Summerhill Pyramid 1030 Canyon St. Winery. 250.428.9334 Continued on page 13

short drive away to the shop on Highway 3 in Erickson. Wine and spirits lovers also appreciate gifts of books, food and art, and locally there is always a good selection to choose from. Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books are always good sources of reading material and Kingfisher has a section of wine and recipe books that is always worth checking out. Who doesn’t love receiving a gift basket? Tigz Designs on Canyon Street offers a great selection, some of which include local wines and juices. They can also create custom gifts for that special someone. Morris Flowers always has excellent gift ideas, too. On 10th Avenue North, Brandy Hunt’s Creative Fix features her original artworks, hand-painted furniture and, right now, some very cool wineand booze-related humour signs at really low prices. A visit to the Harris family’s organic farm in Lister is a perfect opportunity to stock up on Kootenay Meadows cheese products that are always a hit when paired with wine. Or without wine, too, for that matter.
From page 12 I’m a little partial to the latter, being in the midst of research for a book I am writing about Summerhill and the Cipes family. Summerhill is Canada’s first all-organic winery and is also a leader in biodynamics and sustainable practices. The fact that all of its wines spend some time aging in a pyramid that is an exact scale model of Egypt’s Great Pyramid is a bonus, and the owners believe that without a doubt that it adds to the quality of their wines. Winemaker Eric von Krosigk is especially brilliant with sparkling wines. I am a huge fan of Cipes Blanc de Noirs and Cipes Rose, as well as the ever-popular Cipes Brut. Summerhill sparkling wines have won awards all around the world, and for good reason. Of course wine doesn’t only come from wineries and stores. Creston Valley Winecrafters has a great selection of kits that allow for wine and beer lovers to roll up their sleeves and participate in the making of their favourite quaffs. Kits have improved by leaps and bounds in recent years and U-brew fans have increased dramatically in response. Friendly, expert help is only a

And shoppers should not miss out on the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, where a huge array of gift ideas awaits. Be sure to stop by the booths of Tabletree and William Tell for proof that delicious bottles don’t have to include alcohol. Locally made juices are always a hit in our family, and some will surely make their way to Calgary for our Christmas celebrations. For the beer lovers on your list, and there is probably more than one, the Beer Gear Store in Columbia Brewery is open Monday to Friday year-round and it has a huge array of clothing and gift items. And beer, too! The real point to all this is that shopping can be fun, and local, too. Chances are that if you drop into the spots mentioned here, or any local shops, for that matter, you will find unexpected surprises and service from people who are also your friends and neighbours. It’s a fine way to get into the spirit of the season. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance. Give a greener Christmas
E
ven though we love to shower our friends and family with gifts and special treats at this time of year, many of those holiday traditions aren't very loving to our planet. Canadians exchange more than two billion holiday cards each year. It's estimated that we spend about $4 billion on wrapping, decorations, and gifts, which already come heavily packaged — and most of it gets tossed in the trash. This year, make a difference with these ideas: • Instead of holiday cards, why not send a short personal e-mail to everyone on your list? Or visit Hallmark's website to
choose an e-card for the person you love. • Visit second-hand stores for items like a sweater with the tags still on, a serving dish that matches their kitchen, or a toy that's barely been used. Wrap it in newspaper comics, or in a pillow case with a cloth ribbon tied on. • Give an experience instead of a package. Take your kids to the museum or the nearby ski hill, or invite your best friend to high tea. • Got a foodie on your list? Bake them some cookies, or sign them up for a cooking class. • Give a charitable gift in
their name especially one that matches their interests. World Vision, for example, will send your gift to a family who needs it the most. You can buy and send fruit trees, or school supplies, or soccer balls to delight a whole team of grateful kids. —www.newscanada.com

“Real Christmas trees are also grown locally and are 100 per cent biodegradable, unlike artificial trees, which are often transported halfway around the world and are made from non-biodegradable petroleum based product that requires a lot of energy during the manufacturing process." When selecting a pre-cut Christmas tree, Grant offers the following tips: "First, brush your hand across the needles. The fewer needles that come off, the fresher the tree. “Next, check for sap seeping from the cut on the trunk. Seeping sap is another indication of freshness. “Finally, when cutting the tree yourself, look for a straight
trunk with few gaps in the branches.” Once you get the tree home, there are certain things you can do to ensure your Christmas tree stays fresh throughout the holiday season. “It is essential to cut a couple of centimetres off the bottom of the trunk to provide a clean surface for the tree to take up water. If a fresh surface is not created, the tree will not take up water,” said Grant. “It is also vital that the tree is watered every day and kept away from any heat sources to avoid drying it out.” As you prepare for the upcoming holiday season, remember that nothing compares to the smell of a real tree in the home! —Ontario Forestry Association
Real trees the best choice
he winter season is around the corner and Canadians will soon begin searching their basements, garages and sheds for various Christmas decorations. Yet, when it comes to the most important decoration — the Christmas tree — homeowners often don’t consider the benefits of choosing a real tree. Carla Grant, executive director of the Ontario Forestry Association, explains why real trees are better than artificial trees, and offers some excellent tips for finding that perfect tree. "Christmas trees are grown on farms specifically for the holiday, and while growing, are a carbon sink, and provide wildlife habitat and soil and water retention,” said Grant.

Bring personality into your holiday décor
t is true that if you let your personality shine through, there are endless possibilities to create your own one-of-akind holiday statement this year. “Discover a decorating style that's perfect for you and go with it,” says décor and lifestyle expert Janette Ewen. “Do you prefer glitz and glam, or are you more of an outdoorsy type? Find what speaks to you and base your decorating around that concept.” Put your own unique spin on it, says Ewen, with these quick and easy tips: Colour bright If you're in love with one specific look or colour, then commit to it and go all out. For example, specialty décor
items like those from places like Pier 1 Imports, will make you stand out in a crowd. Ewen points out that this retailer's line called Season's Sparkle Collection looks stunning all on its own. Layer silver table linens with silver chargers, napkin rings, holiday accents and more to make a simple, yet elegant statement. Themed Christmas trees Themed trees are fun and easy to pull off. Start by picking a core ornament that you love and get about 20 ornaments, depending on the size of your tree. Choose two or so accent ornaments and get 10 of one and five of the other ornaments. Finish with coordinating tree picks. And who says
you have to stick with just one statement? Set up your main tree in a common space, and then keep guests guessing with smaller trees in unexpected places.
Small changes can make a big impact Pick your favourite two or three rooms in your home and add a few key pieces to transform the space, while staying true to your budget. When in doubt, remember to focus on the high-traffic areas, such as the entryway, living area or dining room. Don't forget the kitchen. With all the cooking – and eating – that lies ahead, you'll want to add some fun into one of the busiest rooms in the home.
Compliment away There's a lot of work that goes into holiday decorating so with your hosts, friends, and neigh-
bours, be sure to acknowledge it with appreciation wherever you go. —www.newscanada.com

There will be a four-week new curler clinic beginning Jan. 6 with a registration fee of $25. If you’ve ever been interested in learning the game this would be a perfect introduction. The club held the first ever

Famous Fritz Open Meatspiel on Saturday, with the Ronmark rink coming in first place. There was also a “turkey shoot” in which players all got to throw a rock and whoever was closest to the frozen turkey ended up winning it. This was a fun way to kick off the bonspiel season for some of our local teams, and we extend our appreciation to sponsors Famous Fritz and Century 21 Veitch Reality. The rink also just held the seniors mixed bonspiel from Nov. 17-19, and look forward to the 52nd annual ladies Valentine Bonspiel Feb. 6-8 and the 70th men’s Butterfly Bonspiel March 5-8. Local emergency services (police, fire and ambulance) have concerns that many rural properties cannot be located by street number in an emergency, especially at night and in bad weather. The Regional District of Central Kootenay urges all property owners to identify their homes by a visible number at the entrance to their driveway. (Bylaw RDC-2391 Civic Addressing Bylaw)
For your safety, we offer two-sided reflective green street number signs for a cost of $20 (tax included). A portion of this fee will be passed on to our local community association to fund their hall.

Cards of Thanks
Cards of Thanks
Thank You
to the doctors and nursing staff at Creston Valley Health Care and Swan Valley Lodge for the excellent care our mother, Maxine Trahan, received during her recent illness. Thank you to all the friends and relatives who sent support and good wishes to Maxine. Special thanks to Sheila Ruby.
Darryl, Lynn, and Terry Trahan
Thank You The family of Charlie Opper would like to express their deep appreciation to Dr. Griffioen, and numerous other doctors and nurses who attended to Charlie in the past four years during his difficult walk with cancer. Without your excellent, professional care this journey would have been impossible. Marg Brown and Jennifer Hutzkal, your assistance was exemplary and we are greatly appreciative. Many thanks to Lindy Ek and his ambulance crew for their great job, in a difficult situation, to transport Charlie to the Palliative Care Unit at Creston Valley Hospital. Thanks also to Dennis Kemle and staff at G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel. Your loving, caring, gentle spirit in helping us through with all the funeral service arrangements will be cherished. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Murray Meikle and Les Munn who came to our rescue on several occasions. We are especially grateful to Pastor Rick and our church family at Creston Baptist for all your prayers, love, support and an abundance of gifts of kindness as you journeyed with us. Thank you to all those in the community for showing your love and care through prayer, delicious food, beautiful flowers and cards, phone calls, visits, emails and text messages. We have been blessed by your thoughtfulness. Charlie will always be missed but never forgotten as he rests in peace with his Lord and Saviour.
God Bless, Linda and Family

Top Ten Reasons
to Advertise in a Newspaper 1. Advertise to Reach New Customers. Your market changes constantly. Advertising is tremendously helpful in directing customers to the product and services they need, and helps put you ahead of your competition.
4 OUT OF 5 PEOPLE WITH DIABETES DIE OF HEART DISEASE.
2. Your Competition Isn’t Quitting. You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition. 3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back. A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%. 4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image. 5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient. Direct has the advantages - demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar. 6. Advertise to Generate Traffic. Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales. 7. Advertise to Make More Sales. Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful. 8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate. Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow. 9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.
Better your odds. Visit getserious.ca
10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.

Eye catching hues on shiny new wheels
When it comes to picking a shade to best represent your vehicular product, sometimes silver or a black just won’t do. There were some standout hues on vehicles displayed at the recent LA Auto Show, goodness knows which, if any of them, will make it your local showrooms. Here are a few vehicles that not only had flair, but the paintwork to match.
2015 Ford Edge
If the name “Electric Spice” doesn’t grab your attention, then the actual colour itself will. You could label it as bright gold. But not a gaudy gold. Yes, it’s bright, and probably will repulse some crossover shoppers, but it doesn’t look half bad on the 2015 Ford Edge.

Cats edge Nitehawks, lose to Ghostriders BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats had mixed results on the weekend, enjoying a 2-1 victory over the Beaver Valley Nitehawks but suffering a 6-3 loss to the Fernie Ghostriders. The Thunder Cats are hanging on to fourth place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League with 28 points, one behind the Kimberley Dynamiters. The Fernie Ghostriders and Golden Rockets top the division with, respectively, 40 and 36 points. Friday’s game against the visiting Nitehawks got off to a slow start. “The first period was a little tentative,” said head coach Jeff Dubois. “But we raised our level in the second and third.” Neither team scored in the first period, but the Nitehawks scored early in the second, followed by a power-play goal by the Thunder Cats’ Alec Wilkinson at 17:59. Newcomer Kyle Richter scored the game-winner on a thirdperiod power play with 14 minutes remaining.
www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 27
Richter hails from Vancouver Island, where he’s played for three seasons with the Westshore Wolves in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League. Friday and Saturday were his first games with Creston. “Kyle fit right into the lineup,” said Dubois. “He’s gotten off to the start we thought he would, producing some offence for us. … He’s a pretty dynamic offensive guy.” Saturday’s game in Fernie started well, with Richter and Trevor Beaton (unassisted) scoring for Creston in the first period. The Ghostriders scored twice in the second before Richter scored for Creston, but the Thunder Cats were down 4-3 after another Fernie goal. Early in the third period, a power-play goal by Fernie shut down the Thunder Cats’ momentum, and they allowed two more goals for a 6-3 loss. “Fernie is a good offensive team,” said Dubois. “They come at you in waves. … It was certainly a bit of an eye opener as to what it’s going to take to win games in that rink.” Saturday was the first game for Tyler Podgorenko, who played with the Thunder Cats last season and has been playing Junior A hockey in Saskatchewan. “For a guy coming in and playing his first game, there were a lot of positives for him,” said Dubois. It was also a good night for the fourth line of Jack Berger, Mason Mazur and Dylan Hogue, who provided consistent energy. “They definitely did what we asked of them,” said Dubois.

The Creston Children’s Choir and Blossom Valley Singers in their 2012 Christmas concert.
Choir and guests offering A World of Christmas BY WIN DINN
Harmony, light, song, peace, family and friends are all words that evoke the emotions that surround us this time of the year. Coincidently, these are all the things you’ll find at the annual concert by the Blossom Valley Singers. A World of Christmas will engage and delight you. With traces of old and longtime favourite carols, wonderful new arrangements, a smattering of languages, and a cornucopia of rhythms and styles, you’ll be immersed in the glory of a choral Christmas. The concerts, a Creston tradition, offer the best of the season to valley residents. At 7 p.m. Dec. 12 and 2:30 p.m. Dec. 14, the Prince Charles Theatre will ring with the
joy of this strong choir of 50-plus members led by Anita Stushnoff and accompanied by Monte Anderson (and some surprise appearances by other instruments, too). Joining the Blossom Valley Singers are Key of She, Kelly Mehrer, Gail Southall, the brass ensemble and, on Friday night only, the Creston Children’s Choir. It is with deep regret that Footlighters has decided to postpone its much-anticipated production of Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast until the spring of 2017. “There were a variety of challenges, including music and costumes,” said president Brian Lawrence, who was slated to direct the musical. “Delaying the show for two years will allow the production team to overcome these challenges and offer the kind of quality show that Footlighters wishes to produce and that our supporters have come to expect.” In its place, Footlighters will be producing the fabulous hit musical Carousel, by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein —the musical team behind The Sound of Music — directed by Frank Goodsir with assistance from Lawrence. Simone Wiebe will be the musical director. Auditions for the show will be held at the Snoring Sasquatch at 7 p.m. Dec. 9. This show, which Rodgers claimed has some of his best music, opened on Broadway on April 19, 1945 and ran for nearly 900 performances. It has been revived on Broadway four times since. This production is set for April 16-18 at the Prince Charles Theatre, concluding the day before the 70th anniversary of Carousel’s original Broadway opening.
The story involves Julie Jordan, a young factory worker, who goes to the carnival and meets Billy Bigelow, a young barker. They fall in love and marry. Billy loses his job, and when Julie is about to have a child, becomes involved in a robbery, and is killed. Billy goes to heaven. Years later, he is permitted to return to Earth to see his daughter graduate from school. Besides Julie and Billy, other characters include Carrie Pipperidge, who is betrothed to Mr. Enoch Snow. When the show jumps 15 years, they have a number of children including both boys and girls from teenagers to a small child (aged about six). There is Mrs. Mullin, the owner of the carousel; Nettie Fowler, Julie’s cousin; Jigger Craigin, the villain of the show who convinces Billy to take part in a robbery; and, of course, the Starkeeper. A large chorus of both men and women are also needed. Songs in the show include the hauntingly beautiful Carousel Waltz, If I Loved You, You’ll Never Walk Alone, When the Children Are Asleep and June Is Bustin’ Out All Over. Rehearsals will begin in mid-January. Lead actors will be rehearsing two or three times a week. There are many smaller parts; those who join the chorus or want extremely small parts will, for the first eight weeks, only be rehearsing once or twice a week.
