Adams also personally addressed each outgoing council member, including Ryan Mennie who was unable to attend Tuesday’s ceremony. “To Walter (Jakeway) – I extend best wishes to you and Eunice for good health as you move forward in your next adventure,” Adams said. “Coun. Ryan Mennie – thank

you for stepping up to represent families. As you have moved on in the best interests of your own family (moving to Alberta), please accept my appreciation for your six years of service on council and much success, health and happiness for you and your family.” Adams then recognized Moglove and Storry, who spent six and nine years on council respectively.

Campbell River’s city council officially took office Tuesday night at a swearing in ceremony at the Community Centre. New mayor Andy Adams and councillors Michele Babchuk, Charlie Cornfield, Colleen Evans and Marlene Wright, along with returning councillors Ron Kerr and Larry Samson, took over the reins of the city in front of family and friends and a large crowd of community spectators. City Clerk Peter Wipper explained the importance of the evening to a nearly-full Community Centre gymnasium. “Even though council has been elected, they are not permitted to take office until they swear their Oaths of Office and Allegiance,” Wipper said. “This is important because it sets out council’s moral and legal responsibilities. Council will swear and sign their oaths before a judge.” Returning to do those honours was the Hon. Judge Brian Saunderson, who received the Oaths of Office and Allegiance first from each councillor and, lastly, from Mayor Andy Adams. Following the swearing in of council, outgoing Mayor Walter Jakeway presented the Chain of Office, which is worn around the mayor’s neck, to Mayor Adams. Adams then presented Jakeway and outgoing councillors Claire Moglove and Mary Storry each with a small gift on behalf of council and the city for their years of

Gravel Dan has been apprehended. Between Nov. 23 and Dec. 3, a man calling himself John, John’s Driveways or Gravel Dan was going door to door soliciting business to either resurface driveways or bring a load of gravel to driveways and appeared to be targeting seniors, Cpl. Poppy Hallam of the RCMP said. He was described as Caucasian, approximately six feet tall with short greying blonde hair, sometimes wearing a beige jacket. A media release was sent out warning the public about this male, and the Campbell River RCMP received many tips and were able to locate him on Galerno Road, near Francis Street. A 50-year-old Campbell River man was arrested without incident for fraud and failure to comply with a probation order. He was due to make a court appearance yesterday. At least three people paid this male cash to complete jobs which he never returned to do and there may be more people out there. The Campbell River RCMP are asking the public to call if they had contact with this male and have not yet spoken with police about it. He will be facing several fraud charges and several probation charges.

Adams promises change in inaugural address Kristen Douglas

Campbell RiveR miRRoR

“There will be a number of changes.” That was the message Mayor Andy Adams had for the community during his inaugural address Tuesday night at the Community Centre. Adams pledged to turn council’s attention back

to the forest industry, bank on the successes of the aquaculture industry, and deal with homelessness and other social issues. He also promised to keep the taxpayers’ best interests in mind when it comes to spending. “No one likes tax increases and I acknowledge the burden that

the taxpayers have had to endure,” Adams said. “The message from voters was loud and clear that taxes are a major issue. It is the responsibility of this council to heed that message and be fiscally prudent as we move forward. “There will be many requests for enhanced services, funding for

more programs and more facilities, but we need to remember what the community has gone through and focus on finding both efficiencies within city operations, and new revenues, before entertaining initiatives that will impact taxation.” Adams noted that it will be a busy few months for council, which does not have a lot of time to get its feet wet before financial planning for 2015 will have to get underway. He said his hope is, in subsequent years, to begin budget meetings in December so that city staff and council know early on in the year what they have to work with. But the first change to

take effect will be how and when council meets. Adams said that starting in 2015, council meetings will be moved from Tuesday to Monday nights. “This will enable members of the media to be able to report on the decisions of council in a more timely manner – this is the first step in improving communication with the media and the public,” Adams said. “In-camera meetings will be conducted prior to open council meetings where possible so that in-camera information may rise and report and be open to the public without delay.” Adams said he is looking forward to moving ahead with the new

council that was chosen by the voters. “During the campaign I asked for your support to elect the best possible candidates for council, that represent a balanced cross section of experience, ideologies and perspectives – a united council that works together, represents our community, respects our quality of life and is aggressive in setting a course of financial sustainability,” Adams said. “I believe the group here with me tonight will do exactly that.” Adam said with the birth of a new council comes an opportunity for healing, change, and a change in attitude. “Now is the time to re-build our revenues,

control expenses, provide conservative investment in our community and infrastructure while ensuring that taxes are stable and competitive. Now is also the time to re-build the respect and confidence in City Hall, city management and staff, as well as the mayor and council,” Adams said. “During the campaign my wife and I received a tremendous amount of support but unfortunately, we were also subject to some very rude, insulting, defamatory and false comments and innuendo. This will not be tolerated by any member of council or staff. “While we all have our ideas, opinions and beliefs, please be mindful that we should treat each other in a manner that we ourselves wish to be treated. “Campbell River is an incredible community. Let’s stay positive and respectful of each other.” For more on some of the initiatives that Adams put forward in his speech at Tuesday’s inaugural council meeting, see upcoming editions of the Mirror.

Our View

Black Friday has become a symbol of greed Anyone with a television in their home was likely bombarded with Black Friday information. We say: Our Whether it was commercials local businesses announcing “amazing deals” on the day following the US Thanksgiving holiday, should not be or news reports on the crazy shopping neglected sprees, stampedes and altercations that occur across North America, Black Friday always seems to capture the consumer spotlight.

It’s really such a shame. While everyone enjoys a deal now and then, Black Friday, much like Boxing Day, has become a symbol of greed. And shoppers being pushed, shoved, and trampled in the rush to spend aren’t the only ones hurt by these kind of events. As millions of Canadians headed across the border, local, community businesses were also dealt a financial blow.

Dollars spent across the line is money taken out of our communities. Local shops and services — be it a specialty store, restaurant, or others — lose a ton of business during these US “shopping frenzies.” Supporting your local business is more than just a concept. It actually helps make the local economy, and therefore the community, stronger. Of course all business is out to make a profit, but spending money locally is one small way to ensure your community continues to thrive.

Letters

Loose dogs posing a threat I recently rescued a small dog from Victoria that was very anxious and not socialized to be with other dogs. Since then, I have invested much time and money to see that he is trained to get along with others. Needless to say, he is always leashed and is getting better at sitting and staying down when other dogs pass. Where it gets stressful for both of us, however, is when thoughtless dog owners feel it is okay to allow their dog offleash and run free in the neighbourhood I walk in. Tonight my dog and I were approached by an uncontrolled and unsupervised large dog as it ran towards us. All I could do was pick up my dog while I watched the owner working on his car oblivious of the scene. Two blocks later, nearing my house, another thoughtless woman, allowing her two large dogs to wander unleashed outside her house, watched as one bounded towards my dog and I. Again, I had to pick him up and yell, scream, and swing at the dog in front of us, while the woman slowly made her way to us (due to the fact this dog wasn’t trained to recall). Without a word to me, she gathered her dog and walked away. Continued on Pg.7

Mike’s Musings On Twitter: @PaperguyDavies

miked@campbellrivermirror.com

I sat down for a chat recently with Gloria Jackson, Coordinator of Community Based Victim Services with the Campbell River Family Services Society to talk about domestic abuse and gender-based violence. Fun topic to spend an afternoon thinking about, right? Well, as much as I enjoy telling feelgood stories of non-profits helping educate school kids, realtors painting the downtown businesses’ windows for the holidays and taking photos of trucks all decked out in Christmas lights, I think it’s important to sometimes force yourself to think about the unpleasant things in this world, because that’s the only way we’ll make it a better place. I’m working on at least one follow-up

article to the piece in this past Wednesday’s paper, which was entitled, “Campbell River no stranger to domestic violence,” where I will explore a few more aspects of the topic, but for now I’m just going to tell a quick story. About 15 years ago, I was leaving a New Year’s Eve party on Alder Street shortly after midnight. I’d had a few beverages, but no one would say I was intoxicated in any sense of the word. I was going to walk home when I was stopped in my tracks before I got two houses away from the gathering. The scream was faint from the sidewalk, but there was a power to it that is hard to explain if you haven’t heard it. It was terror. I walked up to the front door of the

house. There were whimpers of “no” and “stop” and a sound I hadn’t heard since my last hockey fight – the unmistakable sound of fist on face. Then a body hitting a wall. I went back next door to the party to get backup. This would simply not do. We broke through the front door of the house, ran up the stairs and into the bedroom the screams were coming from. We pulled him off her as she cowered in the corner trying to protect her head and face. A good sized chunk of her hair was still in his closed fist as we brought him to the living room. The girls stayed with her in the bedroom to comfort her while the boys kept him on the couch and waited for the police.

I don’t know where they are now. I hope they both got the help they needed. I do know that I don’t regret a single thing I did that night – except maybe that I lingered at the door considering what to do for a minute before going back to the party for help. I’m certainly glad I left the party when I did and was able to intervene in this degeneracy. Let me be clear: I’m not advocating home invasion. I’m saying that the least you can do is tell your buddy that his joke about beating his girlfriend if she doesn’t have dinner ready when he gets home from work isn’t funny. Be more than a bystander. Let’s change the world.

I understand the desire to have your dog off leash, but if you cannot control him (i.e. have 100% recall - that means your dog comes when you call him every time), do not allow him to wander the streets…please! Mayor says economic development needs to be more accountable KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Campbell River’s new mayor will work with Rivercorp in a review of the organization. Mayor Andy Adams said he will liaise with the board as it conducts an internal review of its priorities and ways to revitalize economic development activities. “I will take on the task of working with the Rivercorp Board in looking at options for organizational structure and how to align their initiatives with council’s Strategic Plan,” Adams said during a speech at council’s inaugural meeting Tuesday evening at the Community Centre. The review was announced by Rivercorp Monday at the same time the eco-

nomic development arm revealed that its board of directors has decided to move forward without chief executive officer Vic Goodman. Goodman, who had been with the organization since 2011, and the board came to an agreement to change leadership in late November. Rivercorp vice-chairman Bruce Woytuik has said Rivercorp has no immediate plans to fill Goodman’s position and will first complete the internal review before deciding on how best to move forward. Adams said Tuesday that no matter what the end result, the city needs to do better. “Economic development will need to be more focused, results orientated, and accountable,” Adams said. “I

look forward to sitting down with the Rivercorp board and collectively set a new direction.” But while the future may be uncertain for Rivercorp, other promotional organizations do hold some promise. “We are fortunate to have some excellent work being done at the Visitor Information Centre, InFilm, the Creative Industries, and Tourism (Camp-

bell River and Region),” Adams said. “But there is more we can do with tourism to promote Campbell River.” Rivercorp is responsible for economic development, including Tourism Campbell River and Region, and the Campbell River Visitor Centre. Rivercorp is located inside the Enterprise Centre which is across the street from City Hall.

Get on the Luv Train Party on Quadra Saturday night with the Motown sounds of Luv Train.

On this Saturday Dec. 6 the 8 p.m. the Quadra Island Legion will be celebrating 50 years of Motown as well as local Realtor Heidi Ridgway’s 50th Birthday! She grew up to the sounds of Motown and has danced all her life. She is currently choreographing a children’s play on Quadra. So for the big 50, she searched the Island for a band to bring the Funk to the dance floor. She scored big when she discovered Luv Train. DJ NoEgo will also be spinning some reggae and dance classics to keep the dance floor hopping. There will be prizes for best “Motown” costume. So think 1960-1970’s styles but feel free to come as you are.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets available at the Music Plant in Campbell River and Inspirations on Quadra or Call Heidi 250 -2022217 for more info or to volunteer. Luv Train comes in like a runaway train serving up high energy blues as well as R&B and Motown sounds of the 60’s. A highly entertaining style , gutsy vocals , brilliant harmonies with Grooves 2 Good 2 Loose. The southern Vancouver Island band was formed in 2008 by Larry and Virginia Blatchford, when they met Ryk Ryce at One Human Family Gospel Choir. Ryce was recovering from a deadly bout of spinal meningitis and Blatchford was suffering

with Kidney failure. Knowing music is a healer, they decided to play all the songs they had always loved. Currently they are one of few bands chosen to host the legendary ‘Sunday Blues Jam at

the Queens in Nanaimo’. They have participated in many festival, concerts ,and special events over the years bringing fun, polished music to an enthusiastic audience and dance floor. www. luvtrain.ca”

AVAILABLE FEBRUARY Triumph – Washington Cabernet Sauvignon or ‘King Cab’ brings the structure with firm tannins and adds complexity with aromas of cassis and black currant. Cabernet Franc adds spice, with a peppery nose and red fruit undertones. Merlot rounds things out with an approachable plum and cherry characteristics and a softer rounder body. Together they create a harmonious blend.

AVAILABLE MARCH Trio Blanca – California The three grapes that make up this blend are distinct characters indeed. Chardonnay is the popular and adaptable grape with apple and melon characteristics. Chenin Blanc reflects the soil well in its chalk and citrus aromatics, while its acidity anchors its structure down on the palate. Finally the Muscat grape with a perfumed nose and distinctive ‘grapey’ flavour gives the blend a refreshingly fun and juicy addition.

AVAILABLE APRIL Super Tuscan – With Grape Skins – Italy Coined ‘Super Tuscan’, this full bodied wine consists of Cabernet Sauvignon and the native Sangiovese, and has firm tannins, notes of cherry and currant and a long finish.

“All of the money raised by generous local businesses and employees in Campbell River is used for programs to help people in Campbell River,” confirmed Signy Madden, Executive Director of United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island. “When you donate money to the United Way Community Fund, you are directly helping people in your community - your neighbours, co-workers, friends and even your family.” Many local businesses are participating in this year’s United Way employee giving campaign, including London Drugs, TimberWest, ABC Recycling, Coastal Community Credit Union, TD Canada Trust, Royal Bank, Scotiabank, CIBC and BMO. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are still needed to reach the target of just over $1 million. Individuals and businesses who would like to donate can do so on the United Way website at uwcnvi.ca. Since 1958, United Way Central and Northern Vancouver Island (UWCNVI) has been mobilizing collective action to strengthen our community’s social support network so that every person has access to the help they need during a crisis and for the long term. Thanks to the hard work and generosity of thousands of community heroes, this year UWCNVI invested in eight life-changing programs that give hope to 1,870 people in Campbell River.

Kinsmen Club gives the gift of heat MIKE DAVIES

CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The $25 to $30 per day that it costs to heat the cold weather shelter downtown beside the Fire Hall has been taken care of for the year, thanks to a $3,600 donation from the Kinsmen. “It’ll cover the biggest portion for the year, anyway,” said Pastor Art van Holst of Radiant Life Community Church. “We’ve had some other groups give us some money towards it,” he said, so they

should be just about set for the year in terms of the diesel that powers the heaters for the shelter. “We like to be a part of the community, and put our efforts towards bettering it,” said Gus Murray of the Kinsmen. “There needs to be somewhere for these people to stay, so this is really a worthy project,” Murray said. “Last year was the first year (for the shelter) and there were absolutely no deaths on the street. That is awesome. We’re

O

ne of Campbell River’s long-standing Christmas traditions is back for its 33rd year this December. The annual Christmas Light Tour, which is open to the entire community free of charge, takes place on Sunday, Dec. 14. The event, which is a partnership between the Willow Point Lions Club and Campbell River Transit, takes Campbell Riverites via city bus by the biggest and brightest Christmas light displays the community has to offer. Tom McKenzie of the Lions Club said last year the event was so popular that 11 buses were filled and 13 cars followed behind. The event has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1982.

COMMUNITY UPDATE DECEMBER 5, 2014

The local transit manager at the time, John Leavitt, had just arrived from the Lower Mainland where the public transportation system partnered with BC Ferries to help seniors and disabled persons who couldn’t get around on their own, to look at the lights. McKenzie said people would hop on the ferry and there were buses waiting on each side, one to take people around Nanaimo and one that drove around Horseshoe Bay. Leavitt found the event to be so successful that he figured he would give it a try in Campbell River. In the beginning the tour was exclusive to people with disabilities and seniors and in those first years, transit was putting three or four buses on the road – a far cry from last year’s count of 11 city buses. Since then, the event

has evolved and grown to include the entire community. McKenzie said the tour is popular with the community because it saves people time and gas money. “People don’t have to go and search for the best lights themselves,” McKenzie said, “because we’ve already done that.” The Christmas Light Tour departs from the Sportsplex at 7 p.m. and takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Following the tour, everyone is invited back to the Sportsplex for coffee and refreshments starting at 8 p.m. While the event is free of charge, the Lions are encouraging everyone to bring a non-perishable food item for the food bank. For more information about the Christmas Light Tour, call Campbell River Transit at 250287-7433.

Hydro project road closures begin next month

struction is complete, (the bridge) will be removed and an earth berm will be installed to allow for public vehicle traffic,” Watson said.

KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Crews working on the John Hart Generating Station replacement project are preparing to start tunnelling which will set the stage for the new underground generating station. To accommodate the single tunnel that will be replacing the three penstocks, two entrances – one to the south and one to the north – upstream of the surge towers are being created. At the southern portal, project contractor Aecon SNC-Lavalin Joint Venture has dug a 25 metre (82 feet) deep hole in the ground. Stephen Watson, spokesperson for BC Hydro, said the portal is about 18 metres wide at the top and narrows to eight metres at the bottom. “The tunnel will begin to be excavated and blasted out at the far end and bottom of the portal,” Watson said in a project update report. Tunnelling on both the southern and northern portals is expected to get underway in mid-December. At the northern portal, overburden removal and excavation is still continuing and a laydown area has been levelled off to the left of the surge towers.

Environmental considerations

Excavators dig out a 25 metre deep hole that will make way for the new underground tunnel and John Hart Generating Station.

Watson said removal of the overburden from both portals “has generated the highest intensity truck traffic anticipated, as up to 15 trucks have steadily circled through the site.” Trucks have been hauling up and down both Highway 19A and Highway 28 to sites at Middle Point and Farwell Road. Meanwhile, Brewster

Lake Road is still scheduled to be closed in the new year. “Intermittent road closures, i.e. 15 minutes, to Brewster Lake Road are expected to begin in January and last through March 2015,” Watson said. “This is to allow for the tree clearing and bridge construction. In April, the planned three-year road closure is

Mitigation plan is being developed for run-off from Surge Tower Road. n Acid rock drainage tests for both portals completed and indications are that those locations are not acid-creating.

Bantam A Tyees lose Another Mascia close one on the road to B.C. Fitness Championships

Team now looks to get back on track, travels to Trail for annual Tier-2 tournament

The KLP Construction Bantam A Tyees played a familiar foe on Saturday, the Comox Valley Chiefs, although this would mark the first meeting of the season between these two long time rivals. The Chiefs were still looking for their first win in Division 1 play, and the Tyees were trying to back to their winning ways after a tough weekend at home. The Comox Valley Sports Center is known for its large ice surface and hard, fast ice. The Tyees were hoping these factors would favour the fast and skilled squad from the north. The Tyees seemed to enjoy the extra time and space that the ice surface provided, as they dominated the first period. They moved the puck at will, spreading out the Chiefs defenders and creating numerous chances. Damain Rennie would open the scoring for the boys in black, as he picked off an errant pass at his own blueline and found himself alone with the Chief goalie. With one quick fake the goalie was down and the puck was in the net. The Tyees would carry that one goal lead into the second period.

Momentum is a very mysterious and elusive mistress, one that can stay for long periods of time and then vanish like a ghost. This was the case in the second half, as all the energy and good work the Tyees were trying to build on, just vanished. The hometown Chiefs found their skating legs and pinned the Tyees in their own end for long periods of time. Tyees starting goalie, Matt Johnson, was called into action, as he turned aside shot after shot from the attacking Chiefs. The home team was able to tie the game early in the third on a perfect cross-crease setup. This goal energized the Chiefs – it was as though they could smell the blood in the water. The pressure proved to be too much as the home squad took the lead late in the period to secure a 2-1 victory. The Tyees don’t have much time to lick their wounds as they travel to Trail, for a the annual Trail Tier-2 Bantam tournament this weekend.

The fitness division consists of a posing round and a dance routine demonstrating strength, endurance and flexibility. Deadline looms to register for Nordics’ January programs Many people across the world claim that cross-country skiing is the best form of exercise. Cross-country skiing uses all your muscle groups, they say, so you can strengthen your upper and lower body and your core as well as your cardiovascular system. Here on the island, crosscountry skiing also offers many other health benefits associated with gliding through snowy meadows and forests in the fresh

mountain air. The Strathcona Nordics would like to take you out into those meadows and forests every weekend this winter. The club’s skier development programs offer a set of 10 weekly sessions where you can work on cross-country ski skills in a fun atmosphere with a group of peers and develop the confidence to tackle the trails for the first time or to take yourself to the next level. They have programs for

beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers; for children, youth, and adults; and for recreational skiers and racers. The Strathcona Nordics recreational programs begin the weekend of Jan. 10 and 11 in the Nordic Area of Mount Washington, but they do say not to delay in registering, because programs usually fill up before the Dec. 31 deadline. Visit StrathconaNordics. com for more information A group of young skiers enjoyed the Strathcona Nordics “Rabbit” program. Register and to register. this month for January programs.

There are some collectors in Campbell River who have boxes of the original plug and will not part with the lure. Many collectors will buy and sell the Lucky Louie and some lures will fetch close to $100. There are pictures of anglers all around Campbell River catching a Tyee and chances are the Lucky Louie was the plug fished. On the fly, egg patterns are working on the local rivers and some nice fat cutties are hitting pink, orange and red flies. Catch and release these fish if hooked. Any silver bodied flies will work and the minnow imitations are working, as there is no bug hatch.

We need more rain to get the rivers back in shape. It may be a little early for the steelhead fishing on the Gold River.

The Lucky Louie plug that was made years ago is still fished today on a regular basis because it catches fish. The lure today is fished on a consistent basis in the Tyee Pool Campbell River. Local fishing guides use the plug at various depths of water and some even take off the shine and fish it as a dull white finish, anglers hate to lose the plug while fishing because of the cost factor and plugs purchased online or at sport shops are expensive.

Shoeboxes help brighten the holiday season O nce again, the Shoebox Project for Women in Campbell River will be accepting donations of shoeboxes filled with personal items at their three drop-off locations from now until Dec. 12. The shoeboxes will be given to women who have accessed shelter or outreach services this past year in the Campbell River area and will help to brighten the holiday season for them. Shoebox coordinators Alison Skrepneck and Susan Dyson are asking members of the community to fill shoeboxes with personal items that a woman might like - lotions, hair care, makeup, brushes, combs, and personal care products or items – things that a woman would enjoy but may not have access to or the means to purchase for herself in times of difficulty. The small act of filling a shoebox, decorating it and including an inspirational card has a big impact on the woman who receives it. A special gift, just for her, will not only brighten her day during difficult times, but it will also let her know that someone in her community is thinking about her, and remind her that she is not for-

n Coastal Community Credit Union in Discovery Harbour. n Serendipity in the Garden on Shoppers Row. n Sundance Java Bar in Sunrise Square at Willow Point. This is the second year for the project in Campbell River. “Last year we were overwhelmed by the response. It was so heartwarming to see the love, thought and care people put into making the shoeboxes for the women. We heard that the women loved the shoeboxes,” said Skrepneck. The Shoebox Project for Shelters is a charitable initiative and believes that a small gesture can make a big difference. Started in Toronto by four sistersin-law in 2011 it now operates in 30 cities across Canada. In 2013 thanks to the generosity of hundreds of Canadians 9100 shoeboxes were delivered to women in shelters and outreach programs in 26 communities. Last

year Campbell River doubled their goal and 155 gifts were delivered to women in the community. It is expected that number will be surpassed this year. The shelters provide emergency and transitional services to women who have fled an abusive or dangerous living situation, women living with mental illness, newcomers to Canada, and women living in poverty who are unable to access safe, affordable homes. The Shoebox Project delivers boxes to women who are homeless for any reason. Donations to the Shoebox Project are also accepted, by visiting the website at www. shoeboxproject.com and clicking on the “Donate” button. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $10. (Please note that tax receipts cannot be issued for the donation of gift boxes). For more information go to www.shoeboxproject.com, or call Alison at 250-203-9360 or Susan at 250-914-4498.

“Betty” Elizabeth Margaret Doidge March 27, 1926 - November 21, 2014 Betty passed away peacefully in her sleep on the evening of Nov 21 2014, after living with Alzheimer's for many years. Throughout her time at New Horizons she was always a joy to visit and she taught us the strength of our spirit. Predeceased by her loving parents Mr. & Mrs. Jenner, her wonderful and devoted husband of 67 years "Bill" William Doidge, her beautiful and loving only child Patricia Smart, & her one and only amazing brother Roy Jenner. Survived by her loving and devoted son-in-law Ernie Smart (Trudy), grandchildren Jennifer Wasilenchuk (Chris), Tricia Campbell (Adam) and great grandchildren Sophie & Heydon Campbell. Betty was born in Winnipeg, where she met the love of her life in a roller rink on Jan 20/44. Shortly after on May 2/44 they were engaged, then married in Victoria on Sept 15/44. And together they lived "Happily Ever After". Betty lived life to the fullest, she was a work hard, play hard kind of gal. Everything she did in her life she gave it her all and then some. Whether it be her vegetable & flower garden, her dancing, canning many varieties of foods, knitting & sewing, or lending a helping hand, she did it all with grace and perfection. Betty was definitely a true Canadian Hockey Fan, watching the game was more often than not a family affair. She had a love for so many things in life, a few being, spending her summers in Lake Cowichan, the fishing season in Sooke, and the winters down South. Most of all, she was know for being the life of the party, laughing, sharing fun stories, and singing along with the music. Even though she was struck with Alzheimer's, when you put the music on she always knew all of the words. She won the Best Singer Award at New Horizon's. She was an inspirational woman with so many beautiful stories and memories that we will cherish in our hearts. Thank you Betty for sharing all that you are with us. You remain in our hearts forever & always, we will see you again.... xo The family would like to express our heart felt appreciation to the staff in the Special Care Unit at New Horizon's for taking special loving care of Betty over the past 6 years. It was at Betty’s request to have no service for her passing. The family will be honoring her request and in lieu of flowers to the family we would ask that you would be so kind to make a donation in her name to the SPCA or Alzheimer's Society.
