Swim meet a ‘cracker’ for economy Travis Paterson News staff
The annual Christmas Cracker at Saanich Commonwealth Place, one of the biggest swim meets in Canada, is expected to draw 700-plus swimmers to the District this weekend. Hosted by Pacific Coast Swimming, the event serves as an economic boost as hundreds more friends and family from across the Pacific Northwest arrive for the fun, said PCS director of athletic development Rod Barratt. “It is very competitive at the top end – you’re going to see some elite times,” Barratt said. “The Christmas Cracker usually produces a few of Canada’s top-10 finishes from the year – but it’s also unique because clubs bring the whole team.” With no minimum time standard, the Cracker creates a carnival atmosphere. Swimmers of all levels gather at Commonwealth Place, which is set up with three 25-metre pools going at once, a rare competition configuration. And of course, every swimmer receives a Christmas cracker, handmade by the 100-plus local volunteers helping with the event. “So many competitions in sports are so serious, it’s part of why we started this 12 years ago, to bring a fun aspect,” Barratt said. Hundreds of litres of hot chocolate was served, while many people lined up for photos for a photo with Santa on his sleigh.

Sisters Reya Jamieson, from right, Hannah Jamieson and friend Lauren Poppitt stand with the 1,000 paper cranes they created to bring awareness to and raise money for leukaemia research. Ten mobiles (hanging 40 cranes each) will be raffled off this Saturday (Dec. 6) at Royal Oak middle school’s Christmas Craft Fair, where the girls are in Grade 6. The craft fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
1,000 cranes for leukemia Grade 6 students to auction off cranes for unique fundraiser Saturday Travis Paterson News staff
It took nearly two years, but Royal Oak middle school twins Reya and Hannah Jamieson, and friend Lauren Poppitt, have folded 1,000 paper cranes. It’s all part of a project the Grade 6 students started when they read the Japanese story Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes in Grade 4. That was two years ago and now that they’ve finished they’re hoping to raise $10,000 for leukemia research, starting with Saturday’s (Dec. 6) Christmas craft fair in the gym of their own Royal Oak middle
school, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “There wasn’t anyone we knew with leukemia we just liked the story and started doing the origami,” Reya said. “We love making tiny things.” “When I first started it took me about three or four tries to make a crane, now it’s about three minutes,” Lauren said. The trio isn’t selling the cranes but are raffling off 400 of them in the shape of mobiles, which is how they’ve come to deal with so many. Ten mobiles in total are being raffled away for $10 per ticket, with the money going to leukemia research through a partnership with Imagine a Cure for Leukemia. Dealing with so many cranes presented a challenged, which the girls solved when one of them came across origami dangling from a mobile. “We played with it and thought
40 cranes per mobile looked good, and the math worked, as 25 mobiles makes 1,000 cranes,” said the twins’ mom, Mimi, who’s since perfected the craft of craning and has contributed a few along the way. Millions have read the moving story of Sadako, the 12-yearold girl from Hiroshima who dies of leukemia related to the city’s 1945 bombing. But rarely does a student, or students, attempt to match Sadako’s goal of folding 1,000 origami cranes. Though in Grade 4 at the time and not yet at Royal Oak, the trio set a deadline for the Royal Oak Christmas craft fair, knowing they’d be able to sell them there one day> They knew of craft fair through the twins’ big sister Naya, a former Royal Oak student (and crane contributor). With the craft fair looming, Reya

and Hannah’s living room near Beckwith Park is alive with 1,000 cranes. Or more. “The first 200 we made in the summer between Grades 4 and 5 we put in storage. But when we recounted last year we thought we’d be at 500, and we were missing about 200,” Hannah said. Unfortunately, the impressive looking mobiles will not be for sale on demand at this weekend’s craft fair, but they are available. “We’re looking to do it by order, but we want to hang on to some because the girls had initially thought they would be used differently,” Mimi said. “The hospital we offered them to couldn’t accept them, and we’re not ready to let them go yet, so we’ll make more.” To learn more visit onethousandcranesvictoria.ca. reporter@saanichnews.com

United Way’s loaned employees inspire good Saanich resident Erin Coverdale promotes unique partnership that allowed her to take leave for non-profit Travis Paterson News staff
Erin Coverdale’s contributions with United Way started out small. She was 18 when she began working with HP Advanced Solutions in Saanich, fresh out of Spectrum Community School, and she signed up to donate every two weeks through the United Way salary deduction program. Five years later, the 23-yearold Saanich resident is now a leadership donor and volunteer at United Way Greater Victoria, as well as the chair for HP Advance Solution’s 10-person United Way employee campaign committee. “A lot of people have heard of United Way but don’t understand how it works,” says Coverdale, also a volunteer on the UnitedNOW Council. It wasn’t until Coverdale worked for United Way as a loaned representative (meaning she was working with

United Way but still paid by her employer) in 2013 that she began to understand the extent of United Way’s reach in Greater Victoria. “Until then, I hadn’t realized how many types of social issues are in our community, and the number of struggles people are dealing with here in Victoria,” Coverdale says. “It makes you grateful and it motivates me to help more. It’s also comforting to see the support that is there for people, especially when you learn the many tragedies people are dealing with, things you wouldn’t have seen.” She says the four-month experience as a loaned representative away from her communications job was a busy one. “One of the things I did was to help dispel any misunderstandings and lack of knowledge, and to touch base with where donations are going and how they impact the community,” she says.
It meant organizing a lot of people and staying on top of changing situations, particularly event details. “It can be stressful, but it’s very rewarding and it’s helped me in my role (at HP), especially the presentations. You really learn to get messages out and to motivate.” The United Way Loaned Representative program is a 16-week program during which the candidate works on some of the 400 United Way workplace campaigns across the region. By participating, companies benefit from public recognition as a committed donor and community supporter. The employee works under the supervision of a professional United Way fundraiser to develop skills including sales, customer service, teamwork, interpersonal, public speaking and leadership. Child poverty not a quick fix Everyone is gearing up for the Christmas season, that wonderful time of year focused on giving. There are food drives collecting for the food bank, and campaigns of all kinds to help those in need, including toy drives trying to ensure all children have something waiting for them under the Christmas tree. This is a great thing, and it is good-hearted Seasonal that both organize charity alone people and contribute to them. But the best they can won’t solve hope for, and it is a good growing goal, is to alleviate some of the need. The sad fact is, the issue of child poverty is not going to be solved by a once-a-year campaign. According to the annual report released by First Call, a coalition of advocacy groups, child poverty is on the rise in B.C. rather than declining. The B.C. Child Poverty Report Card says 153,000 children were living below the poverty line in this province in 2012. Last year, the report said 169,240 children. First Call set out 19 recommendations in their report with a goal of reducing the provincial child poverty rate to seven per cent by 2020. The recommendations cover a range, from raising the minimum wage to increased child tax benefits and rescinding cuts to Employment Insurance. But what they all have in common is the need for provincial and federal governments to address the problem. Back in 1989 – yes, 25 years ago – all political parties in the House of Commons collectively vowed to end child poverty in a decade. We’re still waiting. And, obviously, it’s not an easy solution to come by, but when we see the enormity of the problem of child poverty, it is clear it is time for upper levels of government to join in the fight to make some long-term change. We can’t wait another 25 years. What do you think? Give us your comments by e-mail: editor@saanichnews.com or fax 250-386-2624. All letters must have a name and a telephone number for verification.

Blood donations came when needed On behalf of Canadian Blood Services, I’d like to sincerely thank residents of this community who responded to our recent urgent appeal for blood. When it really counted, you stepped up and helped ensure we could continue to meet patient needs across the country. We are fortunate to have such dedicated donors, some of whom experienced longer donation times during this critical period. Thanks to you we are no longer in a critical situation. That doesn’t mean our work together stops here; the need for blood is constant. We look forward to welcoming regular donors back again soon. If you’re a new donor we hope you will consider making blood donation a regular part of your life. We want donors to have the best experience possible. We’ve heard your suggestions and will continue to improve. To begin, we’ve introduced wi-fi in our permanent clinics, created a new website that is mobile friendly, introduced a mobile app called GiveBlood and started publishing
our weekly inventory online so it’s even easier for you to take action. We have also introduced a new eligibility quiz to help you determine if you can donate. To learn more visitblood.ca. Once again, thank you for your recent support and for helping to save or improve the life of a fellow Canadian. Mark Donnison Vice President, Donor Relations Canadian Blood Services

Gingerbread builds homes in Saanich Tammy Schuster Black Press
Gingerbread families are helping build real homes for families in Victoria. Until the end of December, Good Earth Coffeehouse is selling packages of its rich, soft gingerbread cookies in support of Habitat for Humanity. “The cookie sales directly affect our community,” said Nicole Baker, assistant manager of the Royal Jubilee Hospital location of Good Earth. “And they’re really good,” she added. Good Earth will donate $1 from each three-member cookie family sold to support a four-unit townhome project being built at 4000 Cedar Hill Cross Rd. by Habitat for Humanity in Saanich. Habitat expects to have four real-life families
move into their build by next summer. “Sales have exploded in the last four years,” said Good Earth co-founder Nan Eskenazi, referring to the cookies. “They are really delicious and they connect our customers to a charity that does good things right in the community.” Last year, cookie sales reached 6,000, but this year Good Earth wants to sell a record 10,000 cookie packages. The Royal Jubilee Hospital and Uptown locations of Good Earth Coffeehouse are selling the cookie families now for $6.75 each. You can also order gingerbread families online at goodearthcafes.com/gingerbread-families.

LNG tax scheme not enough: NDP Tom Fletcher Black Press
As negotiations for B.C.’s first large-scale liquefied natural gas export project reach their critical days, NDP leader John Horgan has a message for investors: expect to pay more tax under an NDP government. Executives of Malaysian state energy company Petronas were in Vancouver Monday for what may be their final meeting with B.C. officials before deciding whether to proceed with an $11 billion investment in a pipeline and LNG processing at the Prince Rupert port.

In his quarterly financial update last week, B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the low and fluctuating price for natural gas in a shale-gas-rich North American market still indicates the Asia export market is viable. “The proof of that, of course, will be final investment decisions from proponents,” de Jong said. editor@saanichnews.com

New species of clam discovered New discovery of marine invertebrate species rare: Royal B.C Museum expert Royal B.C. Museum curator of invertebrates Melissa Frey is happy as a clam about her latest discovery. Thanks to a sharp eye and a specimen found within in the museum’s collection, Frey has discovered a new species of clam which lives deep “When I first off the coast of Vansaw the specimen, couver Island. “When I first saw the I suspected it was specimen, I suspected special.” it was special – turned - Melissa Frey, Royal out there appeared to no similar species B.C. Museum curator be from this coast in the of invertebrates existing taxonomic literature, suggesting that indeed this species was new to science,” Frey said. The clam, collected by Fisheries and Oceans Canada at about 1,000 metres depth off of Quatsino Sound in 2004, is now a one-of-a-kind find. The first telltale sign that the clam is unique is in its shell, which has unusual scalloping, or curved projections, on an edge. Further unique traits not so plain to the naked eye were also identified by Dr. Graham Oliver, a bivalve expert at the National Museum of Wales, who, with Frey, co-authored a recent article in the journal Zootaxa announcing the new species. The species’ scientific name, Ascetoaxinus quatsinoensis, is a tribute to both its curious shape and its home. The discovery of a new species of marine invertebrate is rare; Frey estimates it occurs about twice per year for B.C. ecosystems. editor@saanichnews.com

The 2015 model year vehicles are rolling into dealerships, with just a few stragglers set for later arrival in the New Year. This week, the Driveway team takes a look at what’s new, in print and online at drivewaycanada.ca, starting with our chief test driver Zack Spencer.

New Year’s Resolution: Hot rides and buys for 2015 Here are what I consider to be five important cars for 2015.
This sixth generation Explorer marks the 25th anniversary of the iconic SUV, with over 350,000 sold in Canada so far.
Mazda MX-5 2015 Jeep Renegade Over the last few years Mazda has been introducing There is no question that the merger of Fiat and vehicles with its new Skyactiv technology but there is Chrysler has helped to introduce many new vehicles. one car that will signify the culmination of all the things The small car segment is a perfect example; the Fiat Mazda does well, the next generation MX-5 (Miata). 500 and its variations has been a plus The MX-5 will come in 2015 as a 2016 for Chrysler’s bottom line. Built in Europe model and all eyes are on Mazda to see on the Fiat 500L platform, this smaller what it can deliver. The bodywork is more Jeep Renegade replaces the Compass dramatic and having seen it in person, and Patriot models. Powered by either the dimensions look fanatic but the new a 160hp, 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder front grille might take a while to adapt too. or a larger 184hp, 2.4L 4-cylinder, Jeep The two-seat cockpit is roomier, thanks to claims that this compact crossover is a wider body and longer wheelbase but still a capable vehicle because of two the overall length is 105mm shorter and by Zack Spencer available all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems. 20mm lower. The standard models will be available with front-wheelThe 2.0L Skyactiv direct injection 4-cylinder will power drive (FWD), with either a 6-speed manual or 9-speed this lightweight car and power will go to the rear automatic transmission. wheels though a 6-speed manual transmission. Engine Styling is all-American; the signature Jeep grille is maroutput has not been announced, neither has the price, ried perfectly into the boxy design, as too are other Jeep but expect the car to be competitive with the 2015 styling cues. The interior is has a rugged, yet upscale model on price. design that features all of Jeep’s latest technology, Ford Explorer including the award winning Uconnect infotainment The sixth generation Ford Explorer will arrive in 2015 system. Pricing has not been announced but expect it as a 2016 model, now with new 2.3L EcoBoost engine shortly as it is due at dealerships very soon. available on the base and XLT trim. This replaces the older 2.0L Ecoboost and provides a 270hp, a 13 per cent bump over the last version. The 290hp 3.5L V6 is carried over but the Sport trim and new Platinum trim will be fitted with the 365hp Ecoboost V6. Ford claims that styling is the number one purchase consideration so the shape was retained but new grille and LED headlamps help refresh the look.

“IF IT Y SA DOESN’T E’S EUGEN ST IT ’S JU NOT THE SAME”
and fold for amazing versatility. The same 1.8L 4-clinder engine with 138hp will power this vehicle, either with FWD or AWD, through a continuously variable transmission or 6-cpeed manual. Pricing will be introduced closer to the introduction this coming spring. Built in Mexico, the HR-V will give Honda the same leg up that the original CR-V did for the small SUV segment. Chevrolet Volt It might surprise many people that the best selling electric car in Canada is the Chevrolet Volt, not the sexy Tesla Model S. There are many reasons for this, mainly the fact that the Volt provides all-electric transportation for 65 kms but with the aid of a small 4-cylinder generator to extend the range over 300 kms. This car has all of the upside of an electric car with none of the range limiting restrictions. In 2015, Chevrolet will introduce the second generation of Chevrolet Volt, one that hopes to improve on the usability of the car in terms of comfort and electric driving range. General Motors will showcase the next generation car in January at the Detroit Auto Show and the company’s CEO has stated that the new car “will store more energy in its battery pack with fewer cells, yet go further on a charge.” General Motors claims that 80 per cent of current Volt owners commute entirely on electric power, so any improvement to range will help increase this number. The Volt isn’t a huge volume seller for General Motors but this new model will help the company to showcase what it can do technologically. General Motors has the capability to produce some the most advanced cars on the road.

Safety Tip: On average, there are almost double the crashes resulting in injury or fatality in B.C. due to driving too fast for conditions in December. In poor conditions, slow down, increase your following distance and give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination.

Honda HR-V Coming in 2015 is another SUV, smaller than the CR-V, helping to define the new subcompact SUV market. This little runabout is built off the excellent Honda Fit platform and will include many of the features that make that car a standout. The first is the interior of the HR-V. It will also feature Honda’s Magic Seats that flip

You can pay a fortune for a premium brand but you needn’t break the bank to buy wheels with style.
Chrysler 200 (starting MSRP $19,945) Chrysler stunned the marketplace with the introduction of its completely new 200 Sedan, resetting benchmarks for style, panache, and performance within a fiercely competitive segment. And with a starting MSRP of just $19,945, the 200 undercuts many of its competitors, yet its real strength is found in its range of trim levels and power options. The base engine is a 2.4L four-cylinder affair that feeds 184 horsepower to the front wheels through a segment-exclusive nine-speed automatic transmission. Going upscale in the 200 brings with it Chrysler’s powerful 295 horsepower Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine paired with the nine-speed autobox and all-wheel-drive traction. Standard features include eight airbags, Keyless Enter ‘n Go, and Chrysler’s Uconnect 3.0 multimedia centre. Options include Blind Spot Monitoring, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, and Active Park Assist. With four distinct trim levels, the Chrysler 200 can match the wherewithal of many pocketbooks while employing the latest in safety and technology to deliver an affordable upscale driving experience. Fuel Economy: 2.4L I-4 10.2L/6.4L100km city/highway 3.6L V6 12.4L/7.5L100km city/highway
Acura TLX (base MSRP $34,900) The four-door Acura TLX Sedan replaces the former TSX and TL sport sedans, merging their respective strengths into a single product positioned as the brand’s mid-level contender. With a base sticker of $34,900, the TLX delivers plenty of sport-inspired luxury built around a 206 horsepower 2.4L four-cylinder power plant fused to an eightspeed automatic transmission. Propulsion is directed frontward unless the V6 Technology Package and Acura’s Super-Handling AllWheel-Drive system with torque vectoring are opted for. In which case, all four wheels share in 290 horsepower produced by the 3.5L SOHC i-VTEC mill. A sophisticated nine-speed automatic transmission further contributes to the engaging performance of the V6-powered TLX. In addition to a more rigid body structure, the TLX provides increased safety and collision avoidance with the use of technology such as Jewel Eye LED headlights, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, and Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Warning. Comfort and convenience essentials include the availability of premium 10-speaker audio along with voice-activated navigation. Fuel Economy: 2.4L I-4 9.6L/6.6L/100km city/highway 3.5L V6 11.2L/6.9L/100km city/highway
Audi A3 (base MSRP $31,100) Looking remarkably like the highly successful Audi A4 Sedan despite casting a shadow 245mm shorter, the new A3 Sedan is sure to capture the attention of entry-level Audi buyers that scorn the A3’s hatchback design despite the vehicle’s praiseworthy
driving dynamics and general practicality. Pricing for the new A3 Sedan starts at $31,100 with the 170 horsepower 1.8L TFSI I-4 power plant turning the front wheels through the auspices of Audi’s six-speed S tronic automatic gearbox. Upping the ante to $35,900 secures a 220 horsepower 2.0L TFSI I-4 connected to all four corners via Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive technology. Diesel power is also available in the A3 Sedan, though paired only with front-wheeldrive. Option combinations include Audi’s Styling Package, Navigation Package, and their sport-oriented S line Package. Audi has always been a technology leader, and the A3 Sedan shares in that reputation with a vast array of onboard safety and protection systems. Fuel Economy: TBD
Mercedes-Benz C 300 Sedan - C400 Sedan (base MSRP C 300 $43,000 - C400 $51,400) Despite slotting beneath the venerable E-Class in the Mercedes-Benz hierarchy of sedans, the new C-Class Sedan takes on a notably formal appearance and a more upscale demeanor for 2015. It’s also lighter and more powerful thanks to the extensive use of aluminum and a pair of revised engines. The C 300 receives a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 power plant capable of 241 horsepower. Need more oomph? A 3.0L twin-turbo V6 places 329 horsepower under the hood of the C 400. Both engines feed all four wheels through Mercedes-Benz’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive technology. The sole use of 4MATIC is a Canadian-market exclusive. Along with new sheet metal and a lavishly-appointed cabin, the C-Class is equipped with the latest generation of COMMAND by Mercedes-Benz. This highly sophisticated infotainment/navigation system is lifted directly from the S-Class flagship. Audiophiles will appreciate the availability of Burmester surround-sound audio components, which are hand-made in Germany. Fuel Economy: C 300 10.9L/7.5L/100km city/highway C 400 11.1L/8.4L/100km city/highway
BMW 228i – M235i (base MSRP 228i $36,000 - M235i $48,750) Reminiscent of the legendary 1968 BMW 2002 Coupe, today’s 228i and M235i Coupes combine the outstanding driving dynamics of the stubby BMW 1-Series Coupe, which they replace, with a sleeker, more aggressive interpretation of the iconic brand’s ethos. The 228i is the tamer of the pair, but with 241 horsepower and 258 lb.ft. of torque, its 2.0L twin-turbocharged I-4 engine delivers highly spirited performance nonetheless. If outright exhilaration is the target, the M235i is the ticket. Its twin-turbocharged 3.0L I-6 mill produces 322 horsepower and 332 lb.-ft. of endless torque. For true driver-oriented motoring, both vehicles can be fitted with a 6-speed manual gearbox in place of the new 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive traction is also available, but can only be paired with the automatic transmission. With the availability of a manual gearbox backed by a choice of turbocharged power plants, the new BMW 2-Series may just be the “ultimate driving machine.” Fuel Economy: 228i 9.1L/5.6L/100km city/highway M235i 11.2L/7.1L/100km city/highway

An autobiography of life in Africa
Self-published book From Here to There recalls Shelagh Levey’s life in Africa and England before settling in Saanich.
From There to Here: England, East Africa, Jamaica & Canada is a recently published book by Saanich resident Shelagh Levey. Levey describes the book as “an amazingly honest and straightforward account of a woman born and raised in England who then goes on to live and work in East Africa, Jamaica, and Canada.” Levey identifies as an ordinary person, a local who has had an opportunity to make the most of what turned out to be a rich and meaningful life. The first section of the book is chronological in that it recounts Levey’s childhood during and after the Second World War. After qualifying as a teacher and teaching in England for two years, she was seconded to Tanganyika (now Tanzania) by the British Colonial Office. During this unique period leading to self-government, Levey had many extraordinary experiences and adventures not normally available to a young, white woman. She was charged by a rhino when climbing in a rainforest, almost eaten by a lion, and threatened by an elephant.
Editor’s note: Are you a resident of Saanich and interested in submitting your self-published book for Reader’s Corner? Cordova Bay resident Shelagh Levey.
Levey was married and her first child was born in Africa before the family moved to Jamaica and finally Canada. The second half of the book recounts the last 45 years of life and events on the Saanich Peninsula, where Levey taught in five Victoria schools and volunteered for several organizations. In writing the book, she describes how her values and attitudes have changed throughout life. She explores many current issues like education, politics, health, spirituality, environmentalism, animal rights, changing social mores, and societal and personal attitudes to aging. “It is a frank and honest book that will resonate with a wide audience,” Levey says. From There to Here: England, East Africa, Jamaica & Canada can be purchased at Tanner’s Books in Sidney, and at Ivy’s Book Store in Oak Bay. It is 250 pages and richly illustrated with numerous pictures and maps. Contact Levey directly at karibu123@gmail.com. Shelagh Butterworth Levey Cordova Bay

T
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
he Island Equipment Owners Associations’ 16th annual Truck Light Convoy and Food Drive, is on Saturday, Dec. 6th, 2014. Every year the Island Equipment Owners Association gets together, decorating their commercial trucks in the Christmas Spirit with thousands of lights, and then travel as a convoy through the streets of the Capital Region. In past years there have been up to 80 trucks participating. This event supports the Mustard Seed Food Bank, Westshore Christmas Hamper Fund Society and the Sidney Lions Food Bank. As there is not an opportunity to stop and collect food items along the route, multiple donation drop-off sites will be set up along the entire route. As a participant in the Truck Light Convoy it is overwhelming to see, that regardless of the weather, thousands of people line the streets with anticipation of the big trucks all decorated in Christmas Lights. Children from 2-92 cannot help but feel the Christmas Spirit as the convoy rolls by. People on the streets
applauding the colorfully displayed big trucks. Not only is there excitement for the children, but I think there are just as many adults pumping their arms for the big horns to blow. As loud as they are it is part of the excitement of the Truck Light Convoy. At 5:45 the trucks leave Ogden Point, arrive in Oak Bay Village at 6:30, at 7:00 they arrive at Yates and Blanshard, 7:30 they will arrive at Helmcken and Trans Canada overpass, at 8:00 they will arrive at Goldstream and Veterans Memorial Parkway and at 8:30 they arrive at Western Speedway. Santa will arrive at Western Speedway by truck! We always caution the public that timing is approximate as the logistics of organizing this event is dependent on a number of factors. Everyone is invited to gather at Western Speedway for the conclusion of this fun event. Admission to the Western Speedway is by cash donation, or a non-perishable food item. Coffee, hot dogs and hot chocolate are available for the public, by donation. This is a must see event for the whole family, Proud to support the Goldstream Food especially children! “Its definitely the funnest meet, I’ve been in it since I was seven and it’s an environment that energizes you,” said 14-yearold Lauren Crisp, who will be in the company of 300 or so PCS teammates. “When we travel to meets it’s usually between 10 and 25 of us, and I think this weekend is half of all the PCS members. “Besides, Santa comes, where else does that happen?” Don’t get Crisp wrong. Like many swimmers this weekend the Grade 10 Mount Doug student will be chasing down a personal best, or close to it, as the U14 provincial record holder will compete in a series of events including her specialty, the 200meter backstroke. Crisp is longlisted to accompany Team Canada to Australia in the new year and her times this weekend will affect the
selection process. “This is it, I’m here everyday, eight times a week, and you have to have a lot of friends here or I don’t think I’d be able to do what I do, yoga, strength training, mental training, and nutrition, all for swimming,” Crisp said. Every swimmer receives a Christmas cracker, hand made by the 100-plus volunteers who help organize the weekend. There’s also some swanky prizes, such as iPads and other technology goodies. Each year the Christmas Cracker fills neigbhouring Royal Oak restaurants and hotels, such as the Howard Johnson hotel on Elk Lake Drive, which is down to a handful of rooms this weekend. The Mount Douglas Rams senior boys football team seeks a remarkable fourth consecutive AAA provincial title at the annual Subway Bowl this Saturday, Dec. 6. The Rams (11-0 on the season and 2-0 in the playoffs) look to keep the streak alive when they take to the field at Vancouver’s B.C. Place Stadium against the South Delta Sun Devils. Go Rams! The Saanich Junior Braves welcome the Peninsula Panthers tonight (Dec. 5) for the annual Pink in the Rink game and fundraising evening for local breast cancer programs and research. Expect plenty of giveaways, jersey auction and of course, great hockey. High school basketball action tipped off with a roaring start this week. Coming up on the Saanich courts Tuesday (Dec. 9,) St. Michaels University Blue Jaguars senior boys visit the Lambrick Park Lions, Mount Doug Rams host Belmont Bulldogs and Pacific Christian Pacers welcome the Vic High Titans. SMUS senior girls also visit PCS at 5:45 p.m. The junior circuit is in action Wednesday, and senior play continues Thursday, Dec. 11 when St. Margaret’s visits the Claremont girls at 5:45 p.m. Lambrick Park senior boys visit Mount Doug at 7:30 p.m. Head to Commonwealth Place this weekend to catch the Vikes swimming squad racing in their last competition of the year. The 12th annual PCS Christmas Cracker meet begins Friday (Dec. 5) and continues through Sunday. The University of Victoria Vikes premier mens rugby squad celebrated a 35-17 victory over the Castaway Wanderers
on Saturday (Nov. 29) reclaiming the Barnard Cup on home turf at Wallace Field. It’s the Vikes first Barnard Island championship since 2008, ending James Bay Athletics Association’s fiveyear win streak from 2009 to 2013. The Wanderers had not appeared in the Barnard Cup final since 2006, when they lost to the Vikes. The Vikes are now off-field for the December break, returning on Jan. 17 when they host the UBC Thunderbirds for the second game of the Wightman Boot series. The upstart T-Birds won the first leg 30-19. On the soccer pitch, Vancouver Island Premier League’s Saanich and Prospect Lake U17 and U18 boys have both come out strong this year with the U17s tied for first, and the U18s in third. Both teams will look to climb the ranks this weekend at the U17s fight for top spot against Oak Bay/Peninsula while the U18s host the Juan De Fuca/ Sooke squad. Gorge/Lakehill takes on the upper Island Riptide Saturday, Dec. 6 at Reynolds Park and again Dec. 7 (field to be determined). Some game times and fields were still being set at press time; for details visit. leaguelineup.com/welcome. asp?url=vipl. Victoria Eagles Baseball, whose midget and premier teams are based at Lambrick Park, raised more than $2,000 in a Saturday bottle drive for a South Island woman in need of a double lung transplant. Tami Walker, a 47-year-old wife and mother of three, has severe and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, or CTEPH and must remain in Vancouver for three to six months following the transplant. “Eagles baseball players receive a lot of community support in playing the game that they love. Helping Tami Walker and her family in their time of need helps our young men learn the value
of giving back,” said Eagles chairman Martin Winstanley. Local wrestliers from the district-wide Victoria Commonwealth Bulldogs team (based at Cedar Hill middle school) travelled to Courtenay on Nov. 29 for the Island Novice meet. Sekou Tatem and Danny Shupbach led the boys with first place finishes in the 41-kilogram and 63-kg categories, respectively. Also impressing were Saanich’s rising martial arts stars, the Shew sisters, as Zena (34-kg) and Kiana (40-kg) each placed first. Around UVic The University of Victoria Vikes Varsity Council has named its November athletes of the month, with women’s rower Becca Zimmerman and men’s field hockey midfielder Brenden Bissett taking the individual titles and the Vikes men’s crosscountry squad the team title. Bissett was vital to the Vikes’ draw with West Vancouver, which gave the Vikes their first point of the season, and was also called up to the Canada men’s national team roster for a New Zealand Tour in December. Zimmerman helped contribute two medals to the Vikes’ tally at the Canadian University Rowing Championships Nov. 1 and 2. The next week, Zimmerman, who is a captain with the Vikes, raced for Team BC in the women’s pair at National Rowing Championship. The annual UVic Vikes cross country team Christmas tree fundraiser is at Centennial Stadium through Dec. 22. Tree chipping is available Jan. 3 and 4. ... Racquet Club skaters seek Skate Canada qualifying spot in Montreal Travis Paterson News staff
Six members of the Racquet Club of Victoria figure skating club are in Montreal this weekend (Dec. 5 to 7) for the Skate Canada Challenge competition. Novice pairs Tessa Jones and Matthew den Boer, and Sarah Kedves and Lucas Pallard, and novice ice dance team Ravie Cunningham and Cedar Bridgewood are each hoping to qualify for a spot at the Skate Canada
Nationals in Kingston, Ont., in January. All three teams competed last year at the Skate Canada Pre Novice Nationals Competition in Regina, Sask., so this is not their first foray at a national event, said director of skating Deena Beacom, who’ll travel to Montreal with the athletes. “The skaters work everyday, sometimes twice a day, with only one day of rest a week,” Beacom said. “They are all very focused and have their goals set.”
“Training has its ups and downs, but these skaters have the determination to weather any storm that comes their way,” said club coach Matt Willis. Beacom and Willis just returned from the Vancouver Island Interclub competition in Port Alberni, where the Racquet Club brought home the team trophy for most overall points achieved on the Island. Improv comes gift wrapped Christmas classics recalled for unique holiday show Andrea Peacock Black Press
The era is the 1950s at Christmastime. But all other details of a unique live show remain unknown to both the audience and the cast until showtime. Miracle on Paper Street, put on by Paper Street Theatre, is a fully improvised Christmas play. Each time it is performed it is a completely different, because it is the audience of the night that chooses the name of the play just moments before the curtain rises. The only thing everyone know is that it will be set in the 1950s. “I thought it would be fun to do a throwback to those old 1950s Christmas classics . . . like Miracle on 34th Street or It’s a Wonderful Life,” said Dave Morris, director of Paper Street Theatre. “The beauty of working in improvisation is that we can do anything. Any title that an audience member can imagine … [we can] make it feel like a 1950s Christmas movie.” The only prop on stage is a lamp post that can be turned on or off, and the only costumes they have are 1950s suits and dresses. Despite not being able to rehearse specifically for the shows, Morris said the group spent two months preparing. “We start with our research period where . . . we watched a lot of movies together and talked about what we noticed and what we saw, how it sounded, how it looked and what the themes were in all of these movies and where we should be looking for themes in our work.” Since they do not know what characters they will be playing, Morris said the actors focus on the style and themes of what they are trying to achieve. “We work on improvising scenes that have that warm Christmas feeling,” he said. “We know the story will be something about the joy and wonder and happiness of Christmas, but we don’t know any of the plot points, which is the fun part.” Many of the 10 cast members have been working together at Paper Street Theatre for the past four years, and Morris said the entire cast is comfortable improvising together. “The first rule of improv is to say yes. Whatever your partner does, you watch and you listen and you stay aware of what they’re doing, and then you
THE SHELBOURNE PLAZA
accept what they’re doing as truth,” said Morris. “With our company, we’ve been working together and working on those skills for so long, that accepting is second nature.” Morris said the uncertainty of an improv show is what makes it exciting and fun for both the audience and the cast. “The audience and the performers are in the same boat the whole time.”

You’ve had that dream. Driving past the old house, somewhat neglected but with all those interesting old features: stained glass, wood floors, dormer windows. What if you bought it, fixed it up, returned it to its former glory? Not just a home but a unique historic home. Then the questions start. Will it be too expensive? What renovation challenges will we face? What are some hidden problems lurking we may not know about? What does a heritage designation mean? Can we do the work ourselves or will we need expensive contractors? Victoria resident Nick Russell, a heritage home enthusiast, lives in a Toronto Street house built in 1891 that he changed from sad to stunning. He’s an advocate of of older homes, attracted by the ambience and atmosphere of such structures. “If the basics of the structure are solid it can be restored,” Russell said. A few of the features that Russell enjoys in older homes are the high ceilings, large windows, pocket doors and original fixtures. He is especially drawn to old window glass. “The imperfections that creates a slightly distorted look, an almost magical view (of the world),” Russell said. Russell is also aware of the problems that a buyer can face when purchasing an older home. He advised to look for “good bones” and to imagine what the house will look like when renovated. New buyers in the older home market are often put off by stories
Do you have a house-hunting story you’d like to share with us? Email: editor@ saanichnews.com To advertise in HomeFinder, call Oliver Sommer at Email: osommer@ blackpress.ca
Heritage home enthusiast Nick Russell stands outside his Toronto Street home. they’ve heard of unexpected repairs that crop up after moving in. A home inspection should find any problems in a home before you make the decision to purchase. That information will alert you to work that is needed and extra budget issues you need to factor into the home purchase. Russell’s house, when first seen, had ugly and potentially hazardous asbestos shingles on it. What seemed like a big problem was
“much easier to fix than feared.” A specialist roofing company removed the shingles in a single day. If there’s a misconception out there, it’s that age alone creates a heritage home, which is in fact a designation from the city. The designation can actually provide a financial benefit, as there are incentives available though the Victoria Heritage Foundation (online at victoriaheritagefoundation.ca) to assist with renos to those proper-

ties. Some buyers fear such a designation will prevent needed changes to a house. Russell said that isn’t so. A heritage designation prevents wholesale changes to the look of a building but doesn’t stop you from upgrading a kitchen or fixing old wiring and plumbing issues if they exist. Russell said you have to remember that “a house is not a museum, it is a place to live in.” editor@saanichnews.com
