surroundings of Cranbrook itself. Coming from the Lower Mainland, access to nature is there, but you have to seek it. “Here, it’s the exact opposite. It’ll be a little bit of an ongoing transition-period for me, but I am loving it.”
Tough winter driving conditions are a part of life in most of Canada. The seasons change, you put on winter tires, slow down and drive to conditions. However, this week, as anyone who has ventured out onto East Kootenay highways can tell you, conditions have been particularly challenging. A Facebook group called Taking Back East Kootenay Highways is pointing fingers at the highways contractor Mainroads, saying that they are not doing a good enough job keeping the highways in the area safe through the winter months. Robert Campbell is one of the administrators of the group. “It seems to us that not enough attention is being paid to roads after major incidents,” he said. That means making sure that roads are sanded and additional clearing is done days after a storm, he says. “We all understand there are limitations to what sand and gravel can do, but they are not doing enough. Look at the roads this week. Would those conditions be acceptable in a parking lot where owners are liable? I don’t think so.” As of press time, Mainroad was unavailable for comment on the situation. This week the group began circulating a petition stating the following: The undersigned petitioners, residents of the Province of British Columbia, request that the Honourable House demand the Government of British Columbia to: 1. Relieve “Mainroads Contracting” from its role in highway maintenance for the East Kootenays of British Columbia and elect a different contractor for at least one term. 2. Conduct a thorough review of the monitoring and enforcement of highway maintenance contractors.

Crown counsel cross-examined Cheyenne Learn on Thursday in Cranbrook Supreme Court following testimony in his defence of the shooting death of Tammy Ellis in 2007. Learn testified his version of the events leading up to the shooting on Wednesday, while crown counsel Lianna Swanson got the chance to challenge that evidence in front of Justice Dev Dley. Learn was convicted of second-degree murder in 2009, but the decision was overturned on appeal in 2013 and he was awarded a new trial. Learn insisted he can’t recall certain parts of the incident on the night of the shooting on Dec. 17, 2007. Swanson made a number of suggestions in an attempt to pin down the reasoning behind some of his decisions, but Learn said his memory through the night was spotty because of intoxication. Learn said he couldn’t remember entering the residence of the event, but remembers being inside at one point. He also testified he didn’t recall loading the gun, pointing the

gun, pulling the trigger, or leaving. He testified his next memory was laying on a road with his bicycle on one side and the gun — a sawed-off shotgun — on the other side. He said he didn’t realize he was on a bridge overrunning a creek, and that he couldn’t say why he tossed it away. Swanson opened her cross-examination by referring to the transcript from the first trial and pointing out inconsistencies in that testimony and the one he delivered on Wednesday.

Salvation Army Kettle Campaign underway A r n e P e t rys h e n Townsman Staff
With Christmas Day fast approaching, the Salvation Army’s Kettle Campaigners are also out in the cold weather spreading their holiday cheer and gathering donations. The funds raised will be used by the local Salvation Army to provide for food programs in Cranbrook and area. “We’ve started our Kettle campaign,” Silver Pocha, Christmas Kettle Coordinator said. “We started on Dec. 1 and we run Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in six locations here in town.” Kettles and those manning them will be out right up to Dec. 24 at 2 p.m. “All of the money that’s raised in the Kettle Campaign stays right here in Cranbrook,” Pocha said. “We have a couple different ways you can donate as well.” You can text HOPE1019 to 45678 which will make a $5 donation through your phone bill. The text option was around last year, but wasn’t widely
promoted. Then there are also online kettles at fillthekettle.com. “That’s nationwide and you can pick the local Cranbrook kettle and donate to that,” she said. The Christmas Kettle campaign started in 1906. “It’s definitely something that’s very widely recognized in Canada,” she said. “We can always use volunteers. People can phone down to the office here at 250-4263612. We’re happy to get people scheduled. We like to do two hour slots as the minimum.” The funds go into helping with the school lunch program. “Everyday over 100 lunches are delivered to schools free of charge for children here in Cranbrook, and some in Marysville,” she said. It also goes to help with lunches at the Salvation Army. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday there are lunches, and Wednesday night there is supper. It also goes to help
with emergency food for people and emergency shelters. “So it all stays in Cranbrook here,” she said. “It helps to support people in the com-
munity that need it.” Canada’s first Kettle was used in St. Johns, Newfoundland in 1906. So they’ve been around for quite a long time in Canada.
Petition calls for improved maintenance Continued from page 1 3. Collect and publicly distribute detailed statistics related to single or multi vehicle accidents, injuries, and fatalities for each highway maintenance region. Campbell says there will be volunteers out there with the petition in the next month or so, at malls, stores and even door to door in some areas. “The Legislature will not accept online petitions so we urge anyone to print it out and get signatures,” he said. “We don’t have a goal but we hope that in the next four to six weeks we can at least get a few thousand signatures and then present it to MLA Bennett.” The group has already made

phone calls to the office of Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett, complaining about the state of the roads. Bennett’s office has sent out a statement: “Thank you for your email concerning the roads. We are taking your email very seriously and have brought your concerns to the attention of the Manager at Mainroads. “We have also been in contact with the Senior Management of the Ministry of Highways. We have been assured that Mainroads has 3 graders working to remove the ice on Highway 3. After the ice has been removed Mainroads will be applying sand or salt depending on
temperature with liquid calcium to improve traction. “The cold weather has been a challenge to remove the ice and Mainroads is working on it.” “There is no question that at this time of year there are a lot of complaints about highway conditions,” said Columbia River Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald. “And there have been tough weather conditions lately. But there is also no question that contracts are getting tighter and tighter and it’s bound to show up. Roads simply aren’t being maintained well enough. The quality of road maintenance just isn’t there. When people’s lives are at stake, the province has to pay attention.”

KCT director looks to make a difference Continued from page 1 Olstead considers the Cranbrook arts community to be vibrant, exciting, determined, and involved. “I went to see the Cranbrook Community Theatre production of ‘Halo’ during my first week living in Cranbrook — and was overwhelmed. There’s amazing talent here, and amazing young talent, which needs to be recognized. I was blown away by the sophistication of the stage design, and I love that great old Studio Stage Door Theatre. If anything, it just confirmed that I am in
the right place, in all ways.” Olstead’s career in theatre operations is deep and detailed. “I was the Operations Director at the Kay Meek Theatre (Vancouver) for eight years. KCT’s a similar-sized venue, as far as audience size goes, but there are considerable differences. “There’s a much broader range of ages and demographics and styles that happens here in Cranbrook, versus my experience in West Vancouver. So it’s a little bit tougher.
“The Kay Meek Theatre had the advantage of being fairly focused, where here you have to figure out the entire broad range of cultural tastes. Which is great. It only proves what a multi-dimensional city Cranbrook is!” Olstead also lists London’s Royal Albert Hall on his resume, where he spent two and a half years as Front of House manager. “I was in charge of all of the staff in the frontof-house operations, and then I worked throughout the building in different capacities. I saw the Cream reunion

from 20 feet away. I saw Eric Clapton a number of times. Probably one of the more complex events we hosted was the Cirque de Soleil, which came in every year; we had to re-do the entire interior of the hall! “It was a neat venue to work in, since they accessed a wide variety of different potentials. We did a number of concerts with Sting there. The concerts themselves were always fabulous, but for me the real professional growth from the Albert Hall was all the problems and difficulties of delivering events, time and again. Anything that could go wrong; from trying to get camera feeds, or trying to get the technical side to work properly — we had to work with that almost on an event-toevent basis: how to problem-solve those different areas. It was very good learning ground.” Olstead had the opportunity to oversee high-calibre events in place during his first week on the job in Cranbrook, including performances by country star George Canyon and an evening with CBC personality Stuart McLean.
I believe Cranbrook should be a major player in the national events-hosting world. It has the facility, it has the community, it has the accommodations, and it has viable populations in the surrounding regions to reach out to in order to increase the audiences.” Galen Olstead “There’s a fair amount of time trying to figure out: what’s the venue? Who are the people involved and who are the people who really care about it? What’s the community? It’s really nice to already have things set up in place, to see that interaction, to give you some guidance. “Like anything, you start to see a fresh perspective; not being in the community, not being part of the theatre to begin with, you see where things are really working well, and you
start to see where things can be improved.” Olstead is not only impressed with the theatre itself, but with the depth of artistic activity within the area, which (per capita) often outranks larger centres such as Kelowna, or even Victoria. “One of the first impressions I had of Cranbrook’s current artistic mindset came from a survey done this past summer by the Key City Theatre’s marketing staff. What really resonated there was there’s a huge local demand for live theatre. One of the first things I’ve been looking at to bring into the KCT are theatre events which wouldn’t otherwise be presented here. Which would add to the community. Local director Paul Kershaw is already handling an upcoming production of Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” in January, which Olstead is looking forward to. “It’s a brave project, it’s a difficult project — and there are very few places which undertake this type of performance. I’m eager to see how Paul brings it to life!” Olstead’s imagina-
tion is fired with the promise of the future for both the Key City Theatre, and the Cranbrook community as a whole. “The Key City Theatre is a top-line venue. The staff is fantastic. Fantastic volunteers. Fantastic board of directors. For the most part, I’d say 95 per cent of the theatre is already running really well. But, like anything, you see certain areas which might need some tweaking — both in events programming and in how we connect with the community. We need to do a bit of work on the infrastructure; the lights, the stage, and what happens on stage. Our capacity needs to be built up more. My major focus right now is to develop that capacity. “And hopefully, with doing that, we can see those really top-level events brought into Cranbrook. I believe Cranbrook should be a major player in the national events-hosting world. It has the facility, it has the community, it has the accommodations, and it has viable populations in the surrounding regions to reach out to in order to increase the audiences.”
Ice jams causing flooding concerns For the Townsman
Ice jams in Joseph Creek in Cranbrook were creating the potential for some flooding issues in low lying areas Thursday afternoon. “The several freeze thaw cycles we have seen over the past month have created a lot of weak ice which is now breaking up and causing Joseph Creek to back up in several locations around the community,” said Chris Zettel, Corporate Communications Officer for the City of Cranbrook. The Public Works department is advising that Joseph Creek is close to coming over the bridge at 1A Street South and 15th Avenue
South around the apartment buildings across from Mount Baker Secondary School – a traditional flood area. Public Works were to have crews working Friday to remove ice jams in key locations along Joseph Creek to allow the water to flow. Residents traditionally affected by flooding are asked to prepare for the potential to see some flooding over the next few days. Empty sandbags are available beside the Public Works yard on Cobham Avenue for those who want them. Residents will be responsible to fill the sandbags themselves.
The City of Cranbrook will continue to monitor the water over the course of the weekend and keep the public up to date on any changes. Residents are advised to please stay away from any creeks, including Joseph Creek and lakes including both Elizabeth and Idlewild Lake. Ice conditions on both lakes will most likely be very poor and someone may be able to fall through. The weather forecast is calling for warmer temperatures and the potential for some light snow or rainfall over the next couple of days.

Crown cross-examines Learn on the stand Continued from page 1
Right before the shooting, Learn testified Ellis had come outside the house and yelled at him for five minutes, insulting him and making derogatory remarks about his intimacy issues with his ex-girlfriend. Learn said he had trouble hearing Ellis, and it was like she was speaking in a tunnel. He later testified that his vision was like a grey haze when he was inside the house directly before the shooting. Swanson questioned those specific details, noting he didn’t
mention them during his first trial. The weapon itself — originally a shotgun rifle — was sold many years ago, but Learn happened to reacquire it in it’s sawed-off state with the intention of restoring it. Though he had other rifles stored at his parents’ home, the shotgun was stored in an old army box in his trailer in four parts that required assembly in order to fire properly. Learn testified that he had brought it out five days
before the shooting with the intent of showing it to his ex-girlfriend, who was dealing cocaine at the time and wanted a firearm for protection. He also testified that he had never put it together at any point in the time he owned it, or even checked to see if it would fire properly. In terms of intoxication, Learn testified he had three coolers and was mixing rum from a 375-ml bottle into a two-litre seven per cent bottle of a different kind of cooler at his trailer the night of the incident.
go over to the house because he was concerned about B.L.’s cocaine trafficking and drug use, and wanted to disable her vehicle with the shotgun, using three shot shells — one with birdshot and two slugs, which he doesn’t recall taking from the storage box. Swanson questioned his level of intoxication based on the co-ordination it takes to ride a bicycle for approximately three kilometres to the residence. She also challenged his reasoning, noting that if he wanted to disable B.L.’s vehi-
He had testified that he was trying to get clean and had abstained from drugs and alcohol for a few days prior, but said he relapsed on that particular night. Swanson challenged that testimony by saying he was drinking because his ex-girlfriend broke up with him. His ex-girlfriend, who will be referred to as B.L. as her identity is protected by a publication ban — was over at a friends house where she was staying temporarily with Ellis. He said he made the decision to leave his trailer and
cle, he could’ve slashed the tires, put sugar in the gas tank or smashed a window. She also challenged the effectiveness of disabling an engine with a shotgun shell containing birdshot without having access inside the vehicle to pop the hood. Defence counsel had a brief re-examination, establishing that he had previously testified in his appeal that he began feeling the affects of the alcohol he was drinking earlier in the evening. Crown and defence counsel will make their final submissions on Friday.
Green Party chooses Bill Green as federal candidate C AROLYN GR ANT
There is a federal election coming in 2015, and although no one is quite sure of the date yet, the Green Party in Kootenay Columbia will be ready. Bill Green of Kimberley will be the Green Party candidate in the next federal election, after being acclaimed in the contest for the Kootenay-Columbia riding nomination. Shortly before the scheduled December 6th vote, the other contestant, Keith Page of Nelson, withdrew from the race. “I am very excited to start campaigning now for the 2015 federal election,” said Bill Green. “And I’m really happy that the Kootenay-Columbia Greens have selected a candidate early so we are ready for whenever the next election may be called.” Green previously ran for the Greens federally in 2011. He believes that this riding may be ready for a change from years of Conservative MPs. “Conservative MPs represent the Conservative Party. Do you want someone who can really speak to the needs of the East Kootenay?” Green asked.
Green feels that adding Nelson-Kaslo area to the riding gives it a more progressive lean, giving the Green Party a better chance. “I believe there is a growing dismay with the present government,” he said. “People are thinking that it’s time for a change. The key is to convince them that the Green Party is the change they should make.” Green also believes that MP David Wilks will not get away with skipping debates and forums this time around. “The long gun registry is behind us. That’s no longer an issue. There are a broad range of issues and David Wilks will have to address them. He has to show up and speak to his government’s record.” Green says he will be ready to run in January. “My intention is to begin running really hard in January,” he said. “We do have an advantage right now over the Liberals and NDP as they don’t have candidates in place yet. We know there has to be an election by fall, but it could be called in the spring or early summer. We have to be ready.”

“Bill is clearly the best candidate for Kootenay-Columbia and I look forward to working on his campaign,” said withdrawing candidate Keith Page. “I’ve been nothing but impressed with his dedication to our communities.” “I am very apprecia-
tive of Keith’s campaign to win the nomination,” added Green. “I think that it was great that we had a nomination contest and I certainly learned from Keith’s views, as well as from all of the people I met at the 8 meetings held throughout the riding
over the last six weeks.” In place of the planned nomination meeting on Saturday, Dec. 6, the Kootenay-Columbia Greens are holding a campaign launch event in seven communities around the riding, linked by videoconference. The
event runs from 5 to 6 pm upstairs at the Kimberley Public Library. “I’m campaigning to win this election, and Greens across the country have shown that Greens can get elected and bring a wide range of important issues forward at all levels of gov-
ernment” said Green. “Most importantly, I want to give real representation to the people and communities of this riding in Parliament. We need to revive our democracy, we need a smart economy, and we need strong communities.”

O
A renewal of generosity
ne of the blogs I read pretty regularly is by Peter Enns, an evangelical scholar of the Old Testament. He usually has some pretty good things to say—and he has a weird sense of humour which appeals to me. The other day, he posted something about St. Nicholas. The rector of the church he attends handed out a card with an icon of St. Nicholas on the front The back contained some brief facts about this saint: “Nicholas was born in the 3rd century in Asia Minor. He used his entire inheritance to help the poor, sick, and children in need. He gave in secret, expecting nothing in return. He attended the Council of Nicea in AD 325. He is greatly loved for his faith, compassion and care, and is venerated in both East and West.” Enns continues, “OK, that’s pretty cool. He gave away his entire inheritance to those in need. I never knew that. I thought he had elves helping him or something, but I guess I got that part wrong.” Enns continues, “Nicholas saved young women from slavery, protected sailors, spared innocents from execution, provided grain in a famine and rescued a kidnapped boy.” He ends, “That really hit me and made me feel stupid and cheated for never having been taught this as a child.” I’ve written about St. Nicholas before, but let me do so again. We need to hear stories like this about people for whom living a life of love and compassion seems to be such a natural thing. St. Nicholas’ Day falls on December 6
every year. People in northern and eastern Europe still celebrate this day by giving gifts and engaging in other festive activities. In the Netherlands, where I was born, it is called Sint Nicolaas Day or Sinterklaas Day. Over time, St. Nicholas has become the modern–day Santa Claus. The sad thing is that St. Nicholas would never recognize himself in this fat, jolly man with a white beard. As Enns puts it, “He probably had better things on his mind than making sure nice children get Rev. Yme an X–Box or an iPad.” We honestly don’t have Woensdregt many historical facts about St. Nicholas. We know he was a priest and later became a bishop. He seems to have been quite well off, and travelled around the country helping people, giving gifts of money and other presents, and doing so anonymously. A famous story about St. Nicholas is how he helped a poor man who had no money to give to his three daughters on their wedding day. St Nick dropped bags of gold into the stockings which the girls had left to dry by the fire. Although this story is most likely to be legendary, it does capture the spirit of generosity and wisdom displayed by this ancient bishop. In a very funny monologue as a host on Saturday Night Live, Chris Rock notices that “there are no sacred days anymore. We commercialize everything. Look what we did to Christmas! This is Jesus’s birthday! Now I don’t know Jesus, but from what I’ve read, Jesus is the least materialistic person to ever roam the earth. No bling on Jesus! He kept a low profile, and we
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
turned his birthday into the most materialistic day of the year. As a matter of fact, we’ve turned it into a whole season of materialism.” Indeed! We could use some of the spirit of St. Nicholas at this time of year. We are being swamped by consumerism. We spend money we don’t have on stuff we don’t need. We have lost our way. St. Nicholas shows us again the grace which is found in giving freely and generously to people who are truly in need. Joy is discovered not in the pile of presents stacked under the Christmas tree, but in giving of ourselves to other people in community. There are so many ways in which we can do that this season. The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle appeal is present everywhere you look. There are giving trees and giving fairs and other projects and programs to give gifts to children who otherwise would get nothing. There are opportunities to give to charities in the name of a friend or family member. Even beyond giving tangible gifts, communities like Cranbrook and Kimberley need people who give of themselves as volunteers to meet various kinds of needs in our communities. Volunteers make life better for all of us. Without the spirit of volunteerism and giving, so much of what we take for granted simply wouldn’t exist. St. Nicholas exemplified this spirit of giving. So let me wish you Happy St. Nicholas’ Day! May the spirit of the good bishop fill your lives in this season and throughout the year. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Opinion/Events
I find myself content with the candidates elected by the voters of our community for new Mayor and Council. I’m especially happy that three of candidates I voted for will now be sitting at council meetings. However I find it a sad that outgoing Mayor Wayne Stetski and Council could not have been awarded more time. Three years is not enough time to make changes. I would like to thank Mayor Stetski, Councillors Sharon Cross, Gerry Warner for their three years’ service, and Bob Whetham for his six years of service. Prior to the last election of 2011 all of you came forward spending countless hours of fact finding and research which brought about change to our sewage infrastructure. I especially thank you for helping shut down
T
the sewage effluent discharge into Hillbar Creek which flowed over top our well. Also for bringing cleaner water to the cows that graze on the City Irrigation Site. In my view you also saved the City a hefty lawsuit from the underground sewage effluent flow that washed out the CPR tracks at Fort Steele. I am looking forward to the new Mayor and Council continuing the improvements that our previous Mayor and Council have started on our sewage infrastructure. I still have concerns, such as how all the chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. are removed, as no one has given me a satisfactory explanation as of to date. There are still areas where the cattle are drinking out of watering dugouts that need to be tested often for E.coli and fecal bacteria counts. Lagoon 2 continues to leak hundreds of thousands of cubic metres of sewage efflu-
ent into the ground, possibly putting Fort Steele ground water at risk. TSE “treated sewage effluent”. I do not consider the sewage effluent treated until it is returned to the same quality as before passing through a municipality! Mayor Stetski, Councillors Sharon Cross, Gerry Warner, and Bob Whetham, your stay was short. However you showed up at the right moment in time and made changes that this City desperately needed. I and my family sincerely thank each and every one of you and all the voters that gave you that opportunity to make these changes in 2011! We wish you the very best in the years ahead. When I came to, I was struggling deep down in the lake … I fought my way up to daylight and swam ashore to see Huxtable walking by the side of the track. He was bleeding and quite badly hurt by his fall from the cab.” Some of the many rocks scattered on the tracks measured fifteen feet across, causing the locomotive to partly reverse direction as it plunged into the lake, dragging the coal tender directly behind the engine and two others cars — one also loaded with coal — into the cold, murky water. Both Bert Huxtable and Harry Gammon, recovering from their ordeal, and Ted Gummer and William Long, both unscathed, quickly realized that not only was there no sign of Bob Eley, but that the passenger train was due along the line in a very short time. A runner was sent to flag it down and managed to halt it in time. A search of the crash scene found no trace of fireman Eley. Only the top of the locomotive windows were visible in the water and the interior appeared to be at least partially filled with coal thrown from the tender. By late afternoon the decision was made to bring in a professional diver from Vancouver. He arrived Sunday and began searching for the fireman’s body the following day. On Wednesday afternoon he uncovered Bob Eley’s feet submerged beneath a large heap of coal and debris in the lake, some distance from the engine. The body was extricated on Thursday and brought to Cranbrook.

Calm & collected Canuck Reinhart named to Team Canada selection camp ahead of World Junior Championship Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Kootenay Ice captain Sam Reinhart (pictured last season) was named to Team Canada selection camp for the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship Monday.
The Motherland calls Valiev headed for Team Russia’s World Junior camp Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
No matter when you talk to Kootenay Ice defenceman Rinat Valiev, hard work always comes up in conversation. It’s no secret the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect focuses on putting forth his best effort each and every day he is at the rink, whether that be in practice or during a game. Last Friday, that effort landed the 19-yearold native of Nizhnekamsk on the selection camp roster for Team Russia ahead of
the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship. “I have been waiting for that roster for the last two weeks,” Valiev said Thursday afternoon on the concourse of Western Financial Place, taking a pause from his pre-practice warm-up with Tim Bozon. “I’m so excited to go there.” Valiev was one of 14 defencemen named to the 38-man roster for Team Russia’s World Junior Championship selection camp, so he still has a ways to go before solidifying a spot for himself. “I have to work so

hard everywhere,” Valiev said. “I don’t know if there’s something special I have to do. I just work hard and show my best game.” Valiev has quietly put forth a strong performance to start the 201415 WHL campaign. After missing the first 12 games of the year with a lower-body injury, the Russian rearguard is chugging along with 19 points in 16 games since his return. Though he doesn’t claim to have any insight into the approach of Russian management, Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill believes his defenceman’s familiarity with the North American ice surface will provide a leg up when it comes to making the final roster. After a year in Malmo, Sweden, the World Junior Championship returns to Canada, hosted in Toronto and Montreal later this month. “It’s a smaller ice surface, which he has tremendous experience on right now,” McGill said Thursday. “Things happen quicker and he has obviously accustomed himself to being a good player in our league
Sitting on the Kootenay Ice bus outside Everett, Wash., last Sunday, Sam Reinhart received a call he had been anxiously awaiting. The 19-year-old Kootenay Ice star was one of 29 players named to Team Canada selection camp for the 2015 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship Monday morning. “It’s been on my mind for quite some time,” Reinhart said Thursday afternoon prior to Kootenay Ice practice at Western Financial Place. “I’m obviously looking forward to it.” With 17 forwards on the preliminary roster, there are no guarantees for Reinhart. That being said, as one of only four returning forwards from the 2014 squad, the North Vancouver native and second-overall selection of the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres is about as near a lock as they come. “From what I learned where things happen quick.” Valiev has been in North America since the 2012-13 season when he skated in 36 games with the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League. He joined the Kootenay Ice for the 2013-14 campaign. “I will feel more comfortable,” Valiev said. “It’s a big difference with the ice. It’s hard to feel better [about your game] when you’re changing ice.” The 6-foot-2 defenceman was one of only four North American-skating Russian defencemen named to the selection camp, joined by Nikita Zadorov (Buffalo, NHL), Ivan Provorov (Brandon, WHL) and Damir Sharipzyanov (Owen Sound, OHL). “His personality, his commitment to getting better, all those things are what you want in a teammate,” McGill said of Valiev. “Hopefully they’ve done their research enough that he can endear himself to that staff.” Team Russia will host a camp in Novogorsk
last year, it’s a tough tournament to even get to the medal stages,” Reinhart said. “It takes a big effort out of the group to buy in to the process.” Team Canada hasn’t medalled at the World Junior Championship since earning bronze in 2012. With such a wide array of experience, Reinhart is hoping to take on a leadership role this year as Canada strives to end its medal drought. “There’s quite a few of us with experience from the tournament last year and I know that’s an important thing,” Reinhart said. “We did have good leaders last year as well, and we learned a lot from them. That’s a big thing in a tournament like this.” In net, Zach Fucale of the Halifax Mooseheads returns, while Chris Bigras (Owen Sound, OHL) and Josh Morrissey (Prince Albert, WHL) represent the two returners on the blueline. Joining Reinhart for a
return engagement up front are forwards Frederik Gauthier (Rimouski, QMJHL), Connor McDavid (Erie, OHL) and Nic Petan (Portland, WHL). There are plenty of obvious assets Reinhart brings to the table, evidenced by an 11-game point streak that has seen him register 23 points for the Kootenay Ice. There’s no questioning the two-way ability of Kootenay’s star captain. But Ice head coach Ryan McGill, who served as an assistant coach with Canada’s 2014 World Junior Championship entry, believes it is the intangibles that set Reinhart apart, not only at the major junior level, but on the international stage as well. “I know this for a fact, whether he is named captain or whether he is considered a leader,” McGill said Thursday, “[the tournament] is in Canada -- [Sam] doesn’t fizzle or have any phase to pressure. He is calm,
he is collected. Nobody can ever see on his face whether you’re up by a goal or down by a goal. He’s always the same player. “Those are the intangibles that mean more to me. I know how he’s going to compete in the games. He’s going to try to be the best player on the ice. He’s going to make his linemates better…The pressure of being in Canada -- he can handle it better than anybody I know. Yes, I’m a little biased, but he backs up my words.” The Buffalo Sabres prospect was steady at last year’s tournament in Malmo, Sweden, tallying two goals and five points in seven games. Team Canada selection camp opens Dec. 11 in Toronto. Reinhart will head east Dec. 10 following a Dec. 9 meeting between the Kootenay Ice and Medicine Hat Tigers. Reinhart is one of 14 WHL players named to Team Canada selection camp.

Ice set for home-and-home with Spokane Chiefs
Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor
For the second time in a week, the Kootenay Ice play three games in three nights, including a home-and-home battle with the Spokane Chiefs. “You try to narrow your focus knowing you’re playing six periods against an opponent,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill Thursday afternoon. “You try to challenge yourself and your group to understand the intensity level is going to be up. It’s a great rivalry. “You try to get your players to understand, playing the game inside the game might have an advantage for you. That’s just doing all the little things and maybe getting inside the head of your opponent.” The Chiefs will visit Western Financial Place Friday night at 7 p.m., before returning home
to welcome the Ice to Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena Saturday. Spokane holds the slightest edge in the fivegame season series, having claimed a 4-3 victory Oct. 25 at home, while falling to the Ice in overtime Oct. 3 in Cranbrook. The last time the two teams met at Western Financial Place, it was Jaedon Descheneau blowing the roof off the rink, scoring with three seconds to play in overtime to give the Ice its first win of the 2014-15 campaign. Ice captain Sam Reinhart will look to extend his 11-game point streak, which is the longest active streak in the WHL heading into Friday’s contest. The 19-year-old Buffalo Sabres prospect has yet to be held off the scoresheet since his return from the NHL, tallying six goals and 23 points. “It’s always an op-

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASA stood poised to usher in a new era of exploration Thursday with the premier launch of its new Orion spacecraft, but gusty winds repeatedly held up the countdown. “No show-stoppers,” launch commentator Mike Curie stressed, noting the team had until midmorning to send Orion on its way. It’s the first attempt to send a spacecraft capable of carrying humans beyond a couple
of the shuttle-flying days. “Go Orion!!” urged a hotel billboard in nearby Cocoa Beach. Curie noted Thursday was the 16th anniversary of the launch of the first U.S. piece of the International Space Station, by shuttle Endeavour. “That was the beginning of the space station, and today is the dawn of Orion,” he said. Orion is aiming for two orbits on this inaugural run. On the second lap around the home planet, the spacecraft should reach a
of 20,000 mph and an environment of 4,000 degrees. Splashdown will be in the Pacific off the Mexican Baja coast, where Navy ships already are waiting. NASA’s Mission Control in Houston was all set to oversee the entire 4 1/2-hour operation once the rocket was in flight. The flight program was loaded into Orion’s computers well in advance, allowing the spacecraft to fly essentially on autopilot. Flight controllers could intervene in the event of an
peak altitude of 3,600 miles, high enough to ensure a re-entry speed

The Wreck of the 3885 Continued from page 7
The death of Bob Eley, a man, according to his obituary, of exemplary character and of a quiet disposition, aroused great sympathy in the community. The funeral at the Baptist church on the corner of 11th Avenue and 1st Street, was largely attended. Among the hymns, somewhat ironically, was the tune “Rock of Ages.” A cortege of almost one hundred people followed by 25 cars followed the hearse to the General Cemetery where Bob was laid to rest. His now weathered gravestone (pictured above) carries the inscription: In the midst of life we are in death.” Things gradually returned to normal for the survivors of the crash, all of whom continued working the rails for years to come. It is safe to say that nothing was ever quite normal again for Mabel Eley and her four young children. The day after the accident Mrs. Eley was quoted as stating, “I must bear up for the sake of my little ones – Bobby’s children and mine. It has been so willed that Bob died in the performance of his duty…We cannot help but think of the terrible calamity that would have ensued had it been not Bob’s train but the passenger that was following a few minutes behind that had plunged through that rock slide into the lake.” As for the badly damaged locomotive No. 3885, it and the other cars were removed from the lake within days. The engine was sent back to the Montreal Locomotive Works from whence it came. Its fate from that time to now is unknown. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll say what is on your mind, and others will give you a quick response. Confusion could be the outcome if they haven’t thought through their responses. Be spontaneous and open-minded. You might be surprised by how everything works out. Tonight: Chat with a friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might be swallowing some anger over a personal issue. Don’t use shopping as an outlet, because doing so would end in regret. You also are likely to change your mind about your choices, so be sure to keep your receipts. Tonight: Pay bills, then decide what you can afford. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) After a few difficult days, you might feel as if you finally are back in the swing of things with your daily routine. A friend or loved one could shock you with his or her news. Absorb what you are hearing, but don’t take his or her words as being written in stone. Tonight: TGIF!
CANCER (June 21-July 22) You have accomplished a lot this week, and you could feel yourself slowing down. A problem with a loved one could result in his or her creating some distance between you. Express your gratitude if he or she decides to open up and share with you. Tonight: Indulge yourself. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might feel pushed by an associate, but understand that a cold shoulder doesn’t explain where you are coming from. A flirtation also could cause you a problem. Do your best not to mix business with pleasure. Tonight: Do what you want -- just don’t be alone. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Clearly an interaction with someone you respect could put you on edge; you might not know why until you speak with a loved one about it. Indulge this person, as he or she is consistently there for you. Make time for a spontaneous get-together. Tonight: A force to behold. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Honor a change of pace. You can
Tundra
intellectualize to your heart’s content yet still have plenty of time for a fun conversation. The combination will help you relax as your weekend begins. A loved one could be unpredictable. Strap on your seat belt. Tonight: Take off! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Try not to color someone else’s day as somber; projecting your mood onto others can cause a lot of problems. Fortunately, you will be able to turn this attitude around. Anger could build on the homefront, but you will know what to do. Tonight: Your home is your castle. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might want to see what is happening with some associates before you decide that a project isn’t likely to work out. Get the full story, and then make a decision. Avoid actively communicating while doing anything that requires your attention. Tonight: Remain anchored. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You will want to have a long-overdue discussion with a co-worker whom you see almost
daily. You might even be exercise buddies! You’ll discover how much you have in common, and you’ll wish you had more time together. Why not make plans? Tonight: Surprises surround you. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Be more forthright with a loved one. Try to be gentle in your choice of words and attitude; otherwise, you could come across as being harsh. Understand what is happening within you. Perhaps you need to plan a vacation. Tonight: Let off some steam. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Keep your own counsel, if possible. You might be taken aback by what is going on behind the scenes. Touch base with a family member or a loved one to get more information. Curb an impulse to go spending for now. Tonight: Make it your treat. BORN TODAY Business magnate Walt Disney (1901), singer/songwriter Little Richard (1932), comedian Margaret Cho (1968) ***

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a middle school student, and one of my friends is depressed. She and her family are atheists, and they have been repeatedly harassed about it to the point that her worst fear is dying and going to hell. I’m really scared for my friend. When we found out she was thinking about suicide the first time, we got her to go to the school counselor, who, instead of telling her that she was depressed and needed psychological help, told her she had made mistakes and needed to be more careful. This only decreased her already low self-esteem. Now she thinks she’s a coward. My friend is also painfully lonely and convinced that everyone hates her. I do not trust the school to help, and neither does she. Everyone says she’s just being dramatic. I have no idea what I am supposed to do. -- Powerless Dear Powerless: First understand that harassing someone for her religious beliefs (or lack thereof ) is bullying and should be reported to the school authorities. It is very difficult when a student doesn’t conform to the dominant attitudes of the school, and it takes a great deal of courage to stand your ground. She is fortunate to have you on her side. Is there a sympathetic teacher or coach she can talk to? If the bullying continues, her parents should speak to the school board and even the local police. We assume her parents are aware of the bullying. If not, please tell them immediately. Your friend’s well-being is at stake. Dear Annie: Our extended family is relatively small, and we all live nearby. We gather for annual holiday dinners. Four of the seven women have a very close relationship, with frequent telephone calls, personal contacts and shared vacations. When the family gathers for the holiday dinners, these four women separate themselves from the remaining family and have a raucous time together with their private jokes, etc. They go to another room and make no attempt to include others in their “clique,” so the other three women and the remaining family are left out of this merriment. The men don’t seem to mind. However, we, the three excluded women, feel this behavior is rude. It makes us feel isolated and offended. After one such holiday, a comment was made to a clique member that they should attempt to socialize outside their group, but their behavior hasn’t changed. One of the offended females is questioning why she and her spouse should even attend these gatherings. Do you have any suggestions as to how to handle this situation? -- On the Outside Looking In Dear Outside: Are the parents around? Mom or Dad should make it clear that this rude, exclusive behavior is inappropriate for family gatherings and will not be tolerated. If there is no authority figure whom these women will listen to, your best option is to ignore them. It would be a shame for these family gatherings to disintegrate because a few people are terminal adolescents. Don’t treat them as if they are the cool kids in high school. Talk to the other family members. Have the interesting and amusing conversations they will be jealous to have missed. Dear Annie: You’ve printed several letters about what to do with old photographs. Every photo has a meaning to someone. And all those photos are history to a family. As a hobby, I scan all family photos and put them into a separate folder on my computer. I then edit them and burn them to a CD. If the family has five members, I burn five CDs. The best part is, I do a family movie with music and burn that to a DVD so the family can watch it on TV. I also tell everyone to put the CDs and DVDs in a safe so they are protected from water or fire damage. -- Mesa, Ariz. Ten Reasons to Advertise on a Newspaper Website 1. Frequency: The online newspaper Web site user accesses the Internet almost twice as much as the general user. 2. Credibility: The credibility of the newspaper brand
extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets.
3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach.

7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products, “Where I prefer to receive information about companies, and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise. At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35. 8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns. 9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium. SOURCE: Newspaper Association of America
