Pumptalk, the two largest factors that influence gas prices are crude oil costs and taxes. Following that is the cost of refining, distribution and marketing— which are all costs of operating, along with all marketing and operational expenses at the retail level. The website state that crude oil prices are affected by several factors including: weather, supply and demand, U.S. crude oil inventories, cost of production and refinery infrastructure, and global crises. Petro-Canada.ca said that the price of gasoline at the station is determined depending on the mode of operation. Some Petro-Canada branded facilities are independently owned and operated, while others are company owned and operated by a lessee or agent. Grand Forks Petro-Canada is a corporate owned store. “Prices for the independently owned and operated sites are set by the operator. Prices for the company owned and lessee or agent operated sites are set by

Petro-Canada,” the site said. “Although an independent retailer may be able to choose the price at their retail site(s), the need to remain competitive with the surrounding market means that ultimately the local market dictates the maximum price.” According to the federal government’s website for Natural Resources Canada, the average cost of regular gasoline in Canada (Dec. 2) was 112.3 down 2.1 from the week before and down 13.1 from last year. Diesel is down 5.7 from last year, while auto propane is down 5.1. Natural Resources Canada states that the overriding factor for determining retail gas prices is always the local market. “Every gas station wants consumers to buy gasoline from them,” the site said. “They will try to attract businesses by lowering their prices by a small amount. The other stations watch their competitors very closely and will match the lower price almost immediately.”

Data invaluable

The City of Grand Forks deer collaring program is underway thanks to the efforts of members of the deer committee as well as ministry representatives and veterinarians. The collaring involves tranquilizing the deer and putting on a collar to track the ungulates through the attached GPS. There are many who suggest that we leave well enough alone. They claim that we are hurting these animals. Even though the deer admittedly act a little skittish with their new collars, there is no proof that they are in any increased physical or mental anguish. With residents voting 895-589 in favour of a deer cull, that could be the next step. Hopefully the new council, under advisement from the deer committee, considers carefully before undertaking any such program. Whether it’s due to our bountiful valley and friendly nature, or that we’re encroaching on their lands, the deer aren’t leaving. Culling 20 or 30 won’t make any difference in the long run when the local deer population is in the hundreds. They’ll come back soon enough like they did in Cranbrook, who are mulling their third deer cull. At least the data gathered from the deer collaring program will give councillors and other decision-makers better information before they decide whether to proceed with a cull.

There is much to be learned from Poloz

Work for free. That was the advice that Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz offered to Canada’s youth when asked by reporters how young people can find work. “I bet almost everyone in this room knows at least one family with adult children living in the basement,” Poloz said in an interview in early November. His advice to those young, basement dwelleers was that, instead of heaping discouragement on themselves by looking for (and failing to find) work that pays a reason-

able wage, they should seek out internships in their areas of interest and work for nothing. That way, he added, they will gain experience and be able to beef up their resumés and/or portfolios. Obviously, Poloz, the most powerful figure in the Canadian financial world, has come up with this advice because of his own discouraging work experience. Having searched for solutions to Canada’s chronic unemployment problems and repeatedly failed, he has given up the search and now offers advice for free instead. There is much to be learned from Poloz. Canadian voters should take note. They might wish to apply Poloz’s advice to would-be politicians. Before electing someone to an office that pays a decent

salary, voters should require politicians to work for free for six months or a year, learning the ropes and helping to craft meaningful legislation. Then, if they still want to run for office, they can present their resumés and portfolios to the public for adjudication. Pre-election TV advertisements featuring candidates’ intern accomplishments, as dull as that might be, would still be better than the attack ads that now clog the airwaves. According to an article in the Sept. 6 edition of The Economist, internships in the financial sector, the professions, the arts and government have practically become a necessity for anyone wishing to secure a paying job in those sectors. So much so that organizations have sprung up that promise

to find an internship for anyone willing to pay a fat fee. These realities, the article states, strongly favour the children of the well-to-do since their families can afford to buy them an internship and support them while they work for nothing and search for the perfect job. Everyone else has to support themselves stocking the shelves of Wal-Mart or manning the deep fryer at Burger King. to the editor

Please return ‘borrowed’ ladder Editor, The Gazette: I would like to take this opportunity to say a BIG THANK YOU to the fine citizen(s) that had to borrow my extension ladder from the back of my building downtown early evening of Dec. 1. I know you must have needed it more than I did at that moment as all I wanted to do was provide heat inside my building for my staff and customers. I hope my water doesn’t freeze and burst the pipes. It’s a nasty business having to lay

people off just before Christmas. Your emergency was obviously more urgent than mine, so you are welcome for the use of my ladder and all I ask is you return my ladder as soon as you are finished, so I can complete my repairs. Insurance is a nasty thing and I know it was an error in judgment not to ask. But on the other hand, if it was stolen it just got a whole lot harder to make a living. Dave Bachmier, Grand Forks

Editor, The Gazette: My constituency office in Castlegar has recently heard from many concerned seniors who did not receive their pension cheques as usual in October and November. When my assistant followed up with Service Canada, she was told that the Service Canada regional offices had received thousands of complaints from seniors who found themselves in the same situation. Service Canada explained that they suspended the pension payments of individuals who have not updated their mailing addresses, whose T-4 pension slips had been returned to Service Canada as “undeliverable,” and who Service Canada could not get hold of in any other way. Unfortunately, this heavy-handed approach has meant hardship for many seniors who rely on their pension cheques for the basic necessities of life. It can take Service Canada upward of seven business days to release a cheque once they are able to make contact with a pensioner. In the meantime, rent cheques are late, cupboards are empty, and people are panicked because of money shortages. When my assistant questioned the need

for such extreme action, she was told that this “T-4 return policy” was implemented for “security reasons,” so that cheques did not continue to be sent to an individual who was deceased, or had moved away. This may sound reasonable, but the reality is that some of the seniors my office have spoken to have had no such changes. They are being punished because of an administrative situation that could have been handled much more simply. One constituent wrote to me about her experience when she contacted Service Canada: “I spoke with a very polite man but the only reason he could give me for the ‘glitch’ was that I could not be found because they had no physical address—really. I was born in this country, I have lived my whole life in B.C., I have worked from the age of 18 years in B.C. I retired in 2001 and have been receiving my pension cheques uninterrupted. The last time I moved was 1981.” I would encourage any pensioner who has not received their cheques to contact my Castlegar office for assistance: 250-365-2792, 1-800-667-2393, alex.atamanenko.c1@parl.gc.ca. Harm—or change?

Is it time to challenge the conventional wisdom about alien or exotic species? Not surprisingly, a growing number of biologists are questioning whether aliens are truly detrimental to ecosystems and whether pristine ecosystems actually exist. Fred Pearce, a freelance author and journalist based in the United Kingdom (U.K.) and environmental consultant for New SciRousing entist magazine, asks, “Are our ideas about the Rabble what we label as pristine nature faulty?” ROY RONAGHAN Pearce reminds us that, “The good news is that nature emerges as resilient and adaptable, able to bounce back from the worst we can throw at it.” The general public has been indoctrinated to believe that non-native species are inherently bad and when they show up in an ecosystem they must be removed regardless of the costs of doing so. Mark A. Davis, chair of the biology department at Manchester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and author of a book titled Invasion Biology, holds the view that we should learn to love most exotic species because they are here to stay and many of them do no harm. In fact, an exotic species that truly fits the definition of an exotic or an alien species is the honeybee. British settlers brought bees with them in the early 1600s for the honey and the wax they produced. No one questioned their first entry to North America or the regular arrival of new stock to replace those that have died in vast numbers, probably because of pesticides. Davis states that the belief that the spread of exotic species will drive native species to extinction rarely happens except in insular environments such as lake ecosystems or islands. He claims that the opposite occurs--that the introduction of an exotic species adds to species richness in an ecosystem. Does the presence of exotics signify a “degraded” ecosystem? Davis claims that there is no such thing as a healthy ecosystem or a sick ecosystem. Ecosystems are just where we find them and they have no particular goal or purpose. “They’re just the species and the physical and chemical processes taking place.” The late Stephen Jay Gould, evolutionary biologist, scientist, professor at Harvard University, and author argued that the movement of species around the world should be seen as part of the evolutionary process rather than a destructive force. In 1998, Gould claimed that the discussion of native plants “encompasses a remarkable mixture of sound biology, invalid ideas, false extensions, ethical implications and political usages.” Dov Sax, biologist in the Department of Evolutionary Biology at Brown University, Providence Rhode Island, believes that the human population will be unable to control the exotics that reach ecosystems everywhere through global trade and travel. Sax suggests that our future landscapes and waterscapes will be home to “novel ecosystems.” agglomerations of species that have never been seen before. The human population likes to think that nature was pristine and untouched until a couple hundred years ago, but that idea has been refuted by Erle Ellis, a geographer at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and some colleagues who have calculated that one-fifth of the landscapes around the world were first modified by humans some 5,000 years ago rather than in more recent times, as is the common belief. Does any of the foregoing information matter to those of us who live in the Boundary region where the management of the watershed is in sharp focus? Is there any better time than the present to examine the way we define healthy ecosystems and what the flora and fauna they contain, if we need to define them at all? Will we change our minds about how ecosystems work? Now may be a good time to heed the words of Mark Davis: “It’s very important to distinguish harm from change.”

Stolen travel trailer recovered POLICE BRIEFS

By Craig Lindsay

Stolen trailer recovered

On Nov. 30 Grand Forks RCMP received a report of a stolen travel trailer from East Lake Drive at Christina Lake. The date of the theft is unknown. The trailer was a 1980 Prowler. “The trailer was subsequently recovered in town (on Dec. 2),” said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison. “Charges are pending of possession of stolen property on the matter.” The matter is still under investigation with three people being involved in the theft. “The trailer showed up on some property here in Grand Forks and was subsequently seized,” he said.

ATV on road

On Dec. 3 at 7:50 p.m. on Central Avenue in Grand Forks, police officers spotted a person driving a small quad ATV on the road. “The quad was driving west-bound on 73rd Avenue and proceeded to cross Boundary Drive into the parking lot of the Shell gas station,” said Harrison. “A constable driving a marked vehicle noticed the driver getting off of the ATV.” The ATV driver was identified by police and found to be prohibited from driving. “He was therefore charged under section 95 of the Motor Vehicle Act with operating a motor vehicle while prohibited,” said Harrison. “He was also charged with driving without insurance, driving without a helmet, and driving with no headlights.” The vehicle was towed. The suspect involved was a 32-year-old male from Grand Forks. Harrison said that you are only allowed to drive ATV-type vehicles on streets with a special restricted use permit as well as licence and insurance.

Driver charged

On Dec. 6 at 10:35 p.m., a female driver from Grand Forks was found operating a vehicle on Second Street apparently under the influence of liquor. “As a result of that she was given a demand to provide breath samples,” said Harrison. “She failed to provide the breath samples and that resulted in a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and 30-day vehicle impound.” The driver, a 42-year-old female from Grand Forks, was also charged with having open liquor in her vehicle.

MVA with injuries

On Dec. 7 at 12:44 p.m., RCMP responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries on Highway 3 near Wilgress Lake. “Apparently, a white 2006 Toyota Tundra was eastbound on Highway 3 and entered into the passing lane attempting to pass a blue 2006 Nissan Armada heading in the same direction,” said Harrison. “The driver of the Toyota Tundra lost control of his vehicle and contacted the driver side of the Nissan Armada. Both vehicles lost control and spun out.” There was approximately $10,000 damage. The driver of the Armada received a minor injury to her shoulder. “As a result, the driver of the Toyota Tundra was charged with speeding relative to conditions,” said Harrison. “Apparently, the conditions were quite icy and slushy when this person attempted to pass and did so in an unsafe manner.” The person charged was a 52-year-old male from Elko (near Cranbrook). The injured driver was a 39-year-old female from Robson (near Castlegar).

Driver passes ambulance

On Dec. 5, an RCMP officer saw a driver passing an ambulance with its lights and sirens activated. “It was one our constable had never seen before and he was totally incredulous as he saw it happen,” said Harrison. “The officer issued a ticket to the driver for passing an ambulance that was responding to a code 3 to an ambulance call. In other words, full sirens and lights. This person decided they were going to pass the ambulance not realizing that behind them after they tailgated and then passed the ambulance was a marked police car.” As a result, the person was charged with failing to give right of way to an ambulance. “In the province of B.C. you don’t pass emergency vehicles that are responding with lights and sirens, you don’t impede them,” said Harrison. “In fact, you are required to pull over to the side of the road whether the emergency vehicle is approaching you or over taking you. You must give way to an emergency vehicle. You certainly do not pass them.” Harrison added that drivers are expected to slow down if they are driving past an emergency vehicle on the side of the road with its lights flashing and proceed with caution when passing. “This is a reminder to people that when emergency vehicles are being operated (with lights and sirens on) you must give way to them,” he said. “Let’s face it, someone’s life may be on the line and they’re responding to it. If you’re impeding them in anyway or causing a dangerous situation you might be putting someone’s life at risk.”

plan and what actions we first put in when we put the plan in,” she said. “This annual review helps us review everything we’ve done, even stuff we haven’t been able to do to date, and where we’re going. So it helps us provide guidance for the next year and what we’re going to do in the watershed plan.” In her speech, LaCroix talked about the plan and the highlights from the recent year for the stewardship society such as fisheries enumeration, water quality sampling, youth programs and aquatic invasive species monitoring and educational program. “I also talked about some of our projected projects such as we want to do a wetland and riparian demonstration site which we want to start in 2015,” she said. LaCroix said the CLSS is also excited about a documentary on zebra and quagga mussels that Christina Lake is a part of. The short documentary film, called The Threat of Zebra Mussels in B.C., is being filmed by Brynne Morrice from Vernon at various lakes in the province. “The film crew will be coming down here in the beginning of January and will be interviewing key people,” she said. “There will be a welcome event at the welcome centre. They’ll interview us and film the lake and what we’re doing here and what are

concerns are.” The film is being produced with the hopes of getting the provincial and federal governments to take action against the invasive mussels. Heather Ling, senior stewardship assistant, talked about the different invasive species and their effect on various ecosystems. “I talked about the different invasive species in Christina Lake including the fish species and the plant species,” she said. “I also talked about our education program which happened at the boat launch at Texas Creek and through our interactive gallery.” Ling said the students at the boat launch saw 286 watercraft owners this year. “They were looking to see if they (boats) were coming from areas where zebra and quagga mussels are present,” she said. “Luckily, we only had one scare with a boat from California. It had been out of the water for six months so we weren’t too worried about it, but we still did a report on it.” At the end of the review, participants broke off into different groups and worked on brainstorming suggestions and ideas for helping protect the watershed. “It was a great day; very informative,” said LaCroix. “We all broke off and worked on action items for implementation that’ll provide us with guidance moving forward. It was excellent.”

Colleen Ross Living an abundant and simple life

Colleen Ross relaxes on the deck of her Grand Forks home.

leen had no desire to continue studying at that level as she felt her credibility was that of a farmer and not as an academic. As a newcomer into Colleen’s home, and for the first time in my life eating organic food, I have come to learn so much more about what I am consuming on a day-to-day basis. My awareness and understanding of growing foods organically has most certainly increased my sensitivities around the values of organic agriculture, food and farming. To be living in a home where almost everything is organic including the salt and pepper and all the spices and herbs that go on our food, the fruits and vegetables, the tea we drink as well as the wine and beer we serve, is a testament to Colleen’s preservation of living consciously and living intentionally. Colleen believes that her work at the international and national levels better equip her with the knowledge and understanding of what needs to be done at the local level. She is convinced that her experience in working with groups in places such as India, west and south Africa, Japan and Asia, Spain and many European countries brings a greater depth to her role as a newly elected city councillor in Grand Forks. Having moved to Grand Forks because of the beautiful region, soil and farming opportunity, Colleen has made this her home community and intends to invest herself in a meaningful way where she can make a difference.

Living with Colleen has not been without its challenges and occasional fright. She can be a bit rough around the edges for this city girl, preferring to keep things simple yet tasteful. Her cupboards and freezers are overflowing with foods that have been dried, canned or frozen. In her busy life she insists that she must be self-sustainable, otherwise she asks, “What’s the point if I can’t feed myself yet I talk about sustainability?” Without doubt, Colleen walks the talk. Colleen’s greatest love, though, is her three adult children, Jessica, Melanie and Isaac, and one grandchild who was born while her daughter lived here for eight months. Sadly for Colleen, Melanie and her little family returned to Ontario recently. All three children have graduated from university and have chosen paths that clearly indicate their shared love and respect for others, and the environment. All of Colleen’s children are either farming now or plan to be in the near future. Colleen’s obvious desire is to entice at least one of them to join her on her little farm here in southern B.C. During the winter months, when not planning for next year’s crops, or working in the community as a board member of the local agriculture society, or attending council and community meetings, you might find Colleen on one of the local cross country ski-trails, or traversing down local ski hills.

More than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour, including hazardous environments, forced labour, armed conflict, drug trafficking and prostitution • 130 million children are denied primary school education. 70% of them are girls • There are 250,000 child soldiers in the world. 40% of them are girls, often forced to be sex slaves to male combatants • 2.5 billion, i.e. a third of the population, do not have access to proper sanitation. Over 1 billion have no facilities at all • Indigenous peoples make up 5% of the world’s population, yet constitute 1/3 of the world’s impoverished rural people. Their life expectancy is up to 20 years less than their non-indigenous counterparts • Globally, only 17% of parliamentarians, 13% of national lawmakers and 3% of the global corporation CEOs are women • The majority of the world’s women can’t own, inherit or control property, land and wealth on a equal basis with men Sources: International Labour Organization, United Nations, UNICEF, UN Women

The principles of all human rights are infused throughout the work of the United Nations. From the original UN Charter in 1945, to the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, to legally-binding treaties that protect vulnerable groups such as women, children, minorities and the disabled, the UN has established, and continues to enhance and defend, international standards for human rights.

No matter where you live in the world, who your parents are, what your background is, or what kind of government you have, human rights are your rights. They allow you to fully develop your human abilities and contribute to the world. When one person’s rights are abused, we are all diminished. It is our collective responsibility to advance and speak up for human rights, to expose wrongdoing, and to protect the most vulnerable. And everyone has – you have! – that power.

The Braves went up 3-0 after two periods with goals from Tanner Stolz, Sean Collins and Kurtis Redding. Tucker Brown scored the only goal for the Bruins at 8:10 of the third period with a power play goal to cut the lead to 3-1. Collins scored a late empty netter with nine seconds left to give Spokane a 4-1 lead. Jacob Mullen stopped 38 of 41 Spokane shots for the Border Bears. Grand Forks continue their homestand with games Friday against Nelson and Saturday against Sicamous at the Jack Goddard Memorial Arena.

It was another tough weekend for the Border Bruins as they continued their losing streak which now sits at 11. Grand Forks lost three games this week in a busy homestand that saw the team play three games in four days. The Bruins lost to Spokane 4-1 Thursday, Beaver Valley 4-0 on Saturday and Fernie 8-4 Sunday. On Sunday against the Fernie Ghostriders, Grand Forks got off to a strong 3-0 lead early led by a pair of goals from Josh Gladman and a single from Matt Lucero. The ‘Riders, who are second overall in the KIJHL with a 22-4-1 record, then stormed back with three straight of their own to tie the game 3-3 in a high-scoring first period. Fernie piled on a pair of goals in the second to take a 5-3 lead into the third period. Joey Guzzo scored a power play goal at 18:14 of the third to cut the Ghosties lead to 5-4. Unfortunately, that was it for scoring for the Bruins as Fernie finished the game with three unanswered goals for the 8-4 win. Jacob Mullen was in net for GF and stopped 44 of 52 shots. Grand Forks Gazette

A local hockey player got a chance to meet her hero at a recent tournament in Calgary. Brittney Konkin, who attends Grand Forks Secondary, got to not only meet former five-time Canadian Olympian Hayley Wickenheiser at the World Hockey Festival on Nov. 28-30, but her team, the West Kootenay Wildcats, won their division. “We went to WickFest in Calgary,” she said. “It’s a world hockey tournament that Hayley Wickenheiser puts on. She’s an Olympian. Natalie Spooner and Megan Nicolson (former Olympians) were there as well and I got to meet all three of them.” The tournament featured 80 female teams with several different divisions and tiers. Konkin’s team played in the Bantam tier 1 division and managed to take top spot. The team played four round-robin games and went 2-1-1, beating Snakebite from Edmonton, winning by disqualification over Prince George, and losing to Sherwood Park from Edmonton. In the final, the Wildcats faced Sherwood Park from Edmonton, the team that beat them in the roundrobin, and won 2-0 to take the title. “We did really good,” said Konkin. “I was really proud of my team because we really played as a team. I felt I played good and really helped the team.” Konkin said she and the team improved over the course of the tournament. She said she was really nervous before the final game but after the first period she started to relax and play well. “I wasn’t playing that well at the start but then I stepped it up,” she said. “We won and I was really happy.” Konkin said she and her teammates got to meet Wickenheiser and the other Olympians

Passes can be purchased at PHARMASAVE #106 in Grand Forks, or by mailing a cheque to:

Christina Lake Golf Club Box 268, Christina Lake, B.C. V0H 1E0 or phone 250-447-9313

during the opening ceremony and then again at one of the autograph sessions. “They were talking about what it was like in the Olympics and what it was like to train,” recalled Konkin. “Hayley Wickenheiser watched some of our final game and congratulated us afterwards.” Konkin said she found it very inspiring to meet and talk with the Olympians. “Especially when they talked about the Olympics and what they were feeling,” she said. “They inspired me a lot.” Konkin has played with the Wildcats for three years now. She has to travel to Castlegar twice a week for practices with the team, which is an under-15 girls rep team featuring players from across the West Kootenays. “We are doing really good,” said Konkin, who plays left defence. “We won our first tournament. We’ve been winning most of our games. I think we’ve only lost two games all season.” The team plays in the Okanagan league, which features teams from Kelowna, Kamloops, Prince George and Williams Lake.

Seals a tradition for over 100 years SUBMITTED

to the Grand Forks Gazette

Every year more than a million British Columbians opening their mailboxes are greeted by B.C. Lung Association Christmas Seals, a sure indication that the season of giving is just around the corner. A Christmas tradition for over 100 years, the seals represent a proud tradition of yearly giving by British Columbians who support clean air and healthy lungs. In the early days, funds raised

helped to combat tuberculosis. Today, the Christmas Seal Campaign helps the lung association fight new battles against lung cancer, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoking and air pollution. “Christmas Seals are a symbol of hope for the one in five Canadians with lung disease,” says Debra Lynkowski, president and CEO of the Canadian Lung Association. “We thank all of our donors for their generosity and ask Canadians who are concerned about healthy lungs and healthy air to join the generations of donors who celebrate their health and happiness with an important donation to our Christmas

Seal campaign.” The Christmas Seals fundraising campaign continues to be a vital source of funds to support the work done by the lung association all year long. This year’s fundraising goal is $1 million. Those wishing to make a donation can do so by calling toll-free 1.800.665.5864. Supporters can also visit www.bc.lung. ca for more information or to donate online. Locally, contact Michele Caskey, volunteer director for the B.C. Lung Association, at michele.caskey@gmail. com, or 250442-3055.

It is with great sadness that the family of Beverly Porter announce her passing. Beverly passed away peacefully after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her previous husband, Brian Porter, her father, David Glenn and her mother Alice. She leaves behind her husband Bill Zarubin, brother James Glenn (Cheryl) from Duncan, sister, Sharon Powell (Dan) from Port Alberni, nieces Kathleen Glenn (Doug) from Duncan, Jenn Giles (Tyler) also from Duncan and her very special longtime friend Doreen Kirpatrick from Youbou, BC. Beverly was born in Duncan, and moved to Grand Forks in the early 80’s. Soon after, she started what turned out to be a very long career working at City Hall. She very much enjoyed her work, her co-workers and serving the people of Grand Forks. Although, a private person she was a loyal and good friend to many. Beverly was also an active member of St. John’s United Church and volunteered for many local charities. Her family is very grateful and thanks all of the staff at Boundary Hospital for the excellent care they provided. A celebration of life will be held in the spring when flowers start to bloom. In lieu of flowers; donations can be made to St. John’s United Church or a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Deborah Baker of Grand Forks Funeral Home,t gffh@shaw.ca.

John J. Ogloff John Ogloff passed away peacefully at his home on December 7, 2014 at the age of 70. John was born on November 21, 1944 in Grand Forks, BC, the son of John and Mabel Ogloff. John was the youngest of 3 siblings. John was predeceased by both his parents, his wife Loretta earlier this year in April, his sister Gertie and sister Florence. John is survived by his daughter Deenna (Dwayne) Schroeder, son Robert (Tamara) Ogloff, granddaughters Hayley & Isabella Schroeder and the twins Ariana and Zachary Ogloff. A memorial celebration of his life will be held on Monday December 15, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Grand Forks Funeral Home with an open house to follow at John & Loretta’s house at 5680 Kenmore Rd. John found it tough these past few months since Mom passed away and is finally home to be with his soulmate. On behalf of our families, we thank everyone that has called, stopped over, and brought food during this difficult time.

Peter Perepelkin July 9, 1941 – November 28, 2014

The work is done. The business is closed. The boss has left the building. Suddenly on November 28, 2014, during his visit with his stepson’s family for American Thanksgiving in Detroit, Michigan, Peter Perepelkin passed away and became a bright star in the firmament. He is survived by his wife and partner Joy Osgood; sister Evelyn (Allan Markin) of Penticton; sister Teresa (Brent Verigin) of Aldergrove; nephew Quentin Markin (Heather McCormick) of Sydney, Australia; niece Allison Markin of Penticton; nephew Brenden Verigin of Aldergrove; stepson Chris Osgood (Jenna) and grandchildren Mackenzie, Sydney, and Max of Detroit, Michigan; stepson Mitch (Melody) Osgood of Medicine Hat. Peter was predeceased by his wife Florence (Bloodoff) and children Larissa and Keith. Peter grew up in Winlaw, BC. After graduating from high school in Slocan City, he attended UBC, receiving his Bachelor of Education degree. Following a period of teaching at the Midway High School, he purchased Clark’s Clothing Store in Grand Forks. Peter’s strong business sense resulted in the creation of His ‘N Her Fashions, an anchor store in downtown Grand Forks for 40 years. Across the street he opened Sunlite Travel, serving local and regional clients successfully for many years. Peter was a world traveler, but he never lost his strong connections with his community. Peter was a proud champion of Grand Forks, promoting the city and its beautiful surroundings at every opportunity. And the opportunities were many. He was active in the travel industry, attending many conferences, where he was an enthusiastic participant in planning and strategic activities. He was a highly respected member of the Retail Council of BC, serving a term as president. He served many years on the Grand Forks Credit Union Board of Directors, and he was instrumental in creating the “Sasha” brand for Grand Forks, which prompted thousands of travellers to stop in Grand Forks for a world-renowned bowl of “Grand Forks Borscht”. Peter was an active member of the Grand Forks Rotary Club, where he was an enthusiastic supporter of Rotary’s principle of “Service above Self”. Above all, Peter’s values were rooted in family. Despite several tragic events in his own family, he never wavered from his dedication to his immediate and extended families. He was generous with his love and support, and was always forthcoming with encouragement and enthusiastic optimism. He was loyal to family and friends; he was a man you could count on for judicious and wise opinions and advice. He had a big heart. According to Peter’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will take place in the spring, his favourite season. A date in May will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or to a charity of your choice. Rest in peace, Peter, and may “choirs of angels” sing you into eternity. You will be in our hearts forever.
