Culture centre society folds BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Hope for a multipurpose arts and culture centre took a step back last week when volunteer directors announced they are returning Community Works grants of $70,000 and folding the Friends of the Ingham Centre for Arts and Culture Society. “It is with deep felt disappointment that we have come to the decision to not accept the areas B, A and C grant monies,” spokesperson Dave St. Germain said at the Dec. 4 Creston Valley services committee (CVCS) meeting the community complex. Red Jade Martial Arts founder teaches and learns in Israel BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Red Jade Martial Arts founder Neil Ripski went to Israel in October to teach for two days at the Tel Aviv University — and ended up becoming a pupil himself, not realizing how different that part of the world really is. A former Creston student, Tomehr ben Johanan, is in the martial arts program at the university — where, Ripski said, anyone goes who wants to be a coach studies — and was instrumental in having Ripski visit. As one of only a few teachers in the world, Ripski was hired to instruct drunken boxing, a type of Chinese martial art that imitates a drunkard’s movements. “I just got lucky and learned something no one else learns,” said Ripski, who will teach a similar workshop in Rome in the winter. “It wasn’t part of the plan.” In Tel Aviv, he taught high-level teachers from other martial arts, and a few who actually taught martial arts in the military. “Through martial arts, they learn about themselves so they become better people,” he said. Martial arts students in Canada can also do that, but are much more concerned with doing it right than delving into the philosophical side. “Here, we question it more: ‘Where do I put my hand? What do I do?’ ” said Ripski. But then, in Israel, residents are much more used to looking at a bigger picture, with politics and religion — avoided by many Canadians — key topics in any conversation. “It’s all they talk about all the time,” said Ripski. “It’s survival. Even in their own country, people are killing each other over religion. ... Everyone is hungry to talk about it. It was like that all through the workshop.” But religion is more than just a concept — that focus can be quite personal. “There’s no way to ignore it,” Ripski said. “People are actively referred to by their religion a lot. Someone will say, ‘I was talking to this Jew the other day…’ ”
As if talking about it weren’t enough, the danger of life in the Middle East was driven home particularly well when Ripski went to the Dome of the Rock, a site holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians. “It’s the most hotly contested piece of real estate on Earth,” he said. During his visit, Muslim youths were in a tower throwing stones at people of other denominations, while a person with a megaphone stirred up the crowd. As army officers began discussing the situation, ben Johanan suddenly steered Ripski away from the area — the officers began shooting tear gas into the crowd moments later. “It was pretty wild,” Ripski said. “It was the most potential violence I’ve ever been near.” Of course, the trip had less dangerous portion, too, including a visit to the Dead Sea and the location where the Dead Sea scrolls were found, and King Herod’s palace at Masada, where Ripski and ben Johanan enjoyed coffee at sunrise. They began training in the ruins, and while they were there, a young Israeli man and his little brother came up to them. The boy trained in kung fu, as well, and they spent an hour or so demonstrating their skills. “Even with a language barrier we became ‘kung fu friends’,” said Ripski. On the Via Dolorosa, the street Jesus is said to have walked to his crucifixion, he saw one pillar a few feet high, carved 2,000 years ago by Romans. “These were the guys that crucified Christ!” Ripski said. And other powerful sights defied a simple description. “We went to the Wailing Wall, and it’s not normal,” Ripski said. “There’s spiritual power there.” The visit was one that Ripski won’t soon forget, and a reminder that belief systems are volatile — something he’s happy to pass on to his Creston Valley students. “Just be open-minded. Don’t go anywhere with assumptions.”

From page 1 The society had an agreement with the owners of property at 1507 Canyon St. to purchase the former auto centre for arts and cultural purposes. “We have informed the Ingham family that we will not be proceeding,” he said. St. Germain was accompanied by fellow directors Penny A.P. Anderson and Simon Lazarchuk. In a letter to the regional directors, St. Germain wrote, “The building is located in the Town of Creston and as a board we realize that without the support within the town it would be a monumental task to finish and sustain this project.” Some improvements were made to the building under an agreement with the Ingham family, and the Community Works grants were intended to make further renovations. The building has housed occasional art shows but currently is in use only for the CIDO community radio station. The Ingham centre, with the involvement of town council candidate Anderson and a $50,000 grant through retiring RDCK Area B director John Kettle, became a focus of controversy on social media during the recent election campaign. Large campaign signs for Anderson and the Action Creston team were in prominent display in the building’s windows. “Although it is too late

to salvage this project, we hope that in the future decisions and support will be given to projects based on their merit and community value and not on personalities or being part of a particular group,” St. Germain wrote. He also expressed concern about what he described as “speculation that the process for application of the Community Works grant may be flawed,” adding that “because of the process we went through, we were able to see the long-term reality of the project.” CVSC chair Larry Binks objected to any suggestion that the application process is flawed. “Our (RDCK) staff vetted everything,” Kettle said. “All contracts were in place. I hope that other groups will step up and fill the void.” Creston Mayor Ron Toyota commented that while rural RDCK areas have gas tax money to grant at their discretion, money from that fund can be used only for infrastructure by municipalities. “The lack of support in town extends beyond the town council,” St. Germain said, adding that Toyota had indicated that the Town of Creston would not contribute to the project at a previous meeting. Binks shut down further discussion between Toyota and St. Germain, saying that the CVSC meeting was not the place “to air your dirty laundry.” “Thanks to all of you for the efforts you put into the community and arts and culture,” he told the group.

Thunder Cats third in division after three wins BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
With five points earned on the weekend, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats have reclaimed third place in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division, a position in which they were tied with the Golden Rockets earlier in the season. This came about after they won three weekend games — the first time they’ve done that this season — beating the Kimberley Dynamiters, Golden Rockets and Columbia Valley Rockies. Head coach Jeff Dubois said he expected the team to be capable of that around now, although Friday’s 4-2 in Kimberley started out a bit slow against the faster Dynamiters. Kyle Richter — in his second weekend with the team — scored the first goal at 9:10 in the first period, eventually earning 12 points in five games by the end of Sunday’s game.
“He’s provided everything we hoped for offensively,” said Dubois. The second period was scoreless, but goals were added by Carson Cartwright, Marcel Fuchs and Dylan Hogue in the third period before the Dynamiter responded with two goals of their own. “We got stronger as the game went along,” said Dubois. The long bus trip to Golden got Saturday’s 4-3 win off to a slow start, as well, with Richter scoring once in the first period, for a 2-1 Rockets lead after the second. Connor Ward and Lien Miller-Jeannotte (power play) scored in the third period, maintaining the lead until Nic Noseworthy tied the score on a power play, with nine seconds remaining. The game went into a scoreless overtime, and Tyler Podgorenko scored the gamewinner in the second overtime period. “It was a game we had circled as wanting to make up some ground on them, and show them
we were able to compete with them,” said Dubois. Ward’s third-period goal was a big one, he said, helping the Thunder Cats stay in the game. “He’s been one of our best guys, I think, from the start of the season,” said Dubois. “He’s playing his best hockey right now.” On Sunday, the Thunder Cats hosted the bottom-of-thedivision Columbia Valley Rockies, resulting in a 9-3 win. Although the score appears lopsided, “it wasn’t like it was a blowout from start to finish,” Dubois said. “It was competitive.” Fuchs scored Creston’s first goal on a first-period power play, with the Rockies responding late in the period. Cartwright scored at 15:36 in the second, followed by two Rockies goals before Jack Berger and Ward’s goal gave them a 4-3 lead. Richter scored the first Thunder Cats goal just over two minutes into the third period. Goals by Alec Wilkinson
r ice Naughty oN
(power play), Richter, Justin Post and Jackson Bruce-Fuoco (power play) followed. Richter’s second third-period goal was assisted by Podgorenko and affiliated player Jake Livingstone, the 15-year-old younger brother of Colby Livingstone, a Creston native who played with the Thunder Cats in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. “He was setting up plays all afternoon,” said Dubois. “He’s a real promising prospect and I’m sure he’s going to be playing here one day full-time.” The Thunder Cats keep adding to their roster, with forward Ryley Bosman dropping down a level from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He was one of the top prospects at the Thunder Cats’ summer camp in Calgary. “He’s a real big body and he skates real well,” said Dubois.
The Thunder Cats play once this weekend, visiting the Rockies on Friday. With 34 points, the Thunder Cats are 20 ahead of the Rockies, and have had three really close games, said Dubois, in the last four. “You try to be cautious, and try not to read too much into the score on Sunday,” he said. “It’s the kind of situation where you let your guard down and end up regretting it.” On Tuesday, the Thunder Cats will host the Dynamiters, who currently sit one point behind them in the division standings. The Fernie Ghostriders and Golden Rockets currently top the division, with 46 and 30 points, respectively. “We’ve beaten them twice at home and we want to keep it going in terms of our home ice being a place where it’s real difficult for teams to come in and get wins,” said Dubois.

going to take a lot of money to keep the arts centre in operation. An art gallery and arts and crafts co-op had both eventually failed on Canyon Street, and they were both entrepreneurial efforts. What would make the Ingham different? I believe there is a need for an arts centre of some sort in Creston. But I was never able to find any personal enthusiasm for the Ingham centre. I just couldn’t, and it wasn’t for lack of trying, envision it in operation. I like the idea, I told others, but I wouldn’t put a cent of my own money into it. A few weeks ago, rumblings began to surface that the Friends of the Ingham was about to fold. It couldn’t have been an easy decision, with $70,000 from Regional District of Central Kootenay areas A, B and C in the bank. But I admonished one person who was involved with the group, saying that for two years its prime mission was to build community support for the project. You are further behind than when you started, I told him. In a letter presented at last week’s Creston Valley services committee meeting, there is a snipe toward the Town of Creston: “We hope that in the future decisions and support will be given to projects based on their merit and community value and not on personalities or being part of a particular group.” The comment seems to refer to the recent election and the Action Creston team’s involvement in it and the Ingham centre. It might be convenient to lay the blame of the society’s failure at the feet of the Town of Creston (and me, probably, because I made the issue public) but I think the truth is that this project didn’t die. It never came to life. Lorne Eckersley is the publisher of the Creston Valley Advance.
The nursery was closed for the season around freeze up in midOctober. I put the leftover trees and shrubs together, pot to pot, in an area out of the wind and sun. I make sure they are well watered in. Once they have frozen up safe and sound, I need only check the greenhouses out for snow and ice buildup. I am quite happy that I’m not baby sitting a crop of poinsettias through a cold and windy fall. One of my first jobs in a greenhouse was helping to throw out a couple acres of holiday pepper plants that hadn’t sold for Christmas. It was followed by another week of throwing out frozen primulas as a few greenhouses farthest from the boiler hadn’t been able to stay above freezing one night. There isn’t a lot of forgiveness growing tropical plants at this time of year. I am happy to have a short break from the greenhouses and nursery before Christmas. Once I’ve put a solid plan together for the next year, supplies are ordered. I get to spend some time in the orchard with my dad. I still have about a thousand cherry trees to farm, as well as an
YouTube. At farmers markets I attend through summer, folks are still amazed to find out that our cherries are picked and sorted by hand. “What other way could we do this?” I ask myself as a grower. The last few years, they have been training sweet cherries to grow upward on an vertical axis in Washington — the idea being to be able to drive a machine in under the branches and collect the fruit with as little damage as possible. How this will work out in economic terms is anyone’s guess but they are onto something. Labour costs keep going up. There is an ad for a blueberry harvester (machine) in front of me stating that handpicking a pound of blueberries runs about $0.60/pound and for a 50-acre field about $0.15/ pound with a machine harvester. The difficulty for machine harvested sweet cherries may be in having them come to market stemless. On the other hand, perhaps this could be seen as beneficial. I hope you all have an enjoyable pre-holiday season! Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Nursery Notes Evan Davies later on. So I start now. This time of year there is less snow on the ground. It is cold enough to be dry. As long as the wind isn’t howling, it’s not too bad. While we prune the trees I get filled in on the family news. I also like to reflect on the year that has come and gone. There is research being carried out in Washington state on growing and harvesting stemless sweet cherries by machine. Sour cherries or pie cherries grown for processing have long been shaken from the tree by machine harvesters. There are some pretty neat videos of this uploaded to

Girls receive many mixed messages To the Editor: (Re: “Be Fair to Both Sides”, Nov. 20) In my opinion, LoRae Blackmore (“The Teen Take: Do You Know the Proper Woman?”, Nov. 13) was using satire to identify the mixed messages that young women receive from society. Women have to walk a fine line in order not to be judged or criticized. Girls are given Barbie dolls at an early age, which may give them the idea that the ideal female body type is extremely thin with blond hair. No wonder some young women develop anorexia. Some young girls’ clothes are miniature versions of adult fashions. One of my granddaughters was given a toy makeup kit at the age of four by a relative of my son-in-law. Some movie stars and popular singers are terrible examples, such as Miley Cyrus. Also, there are many negative or even evil influences on the Internet. I heard on the news last week that one in four females in the U.S.A. will be assaulted in her lifetime. Only a small percentage of assaults are reported and even fewer are prosecuted. If a woman does report an assault, she may be judged for wearing seductive clothes or associating with the wrong people. The recent news reports about alleged sexual assaults by famous personalities such as Jian Ghomeshi and Bill Cosby seem to show that some (not all) men have no regard for women as individuals with feelings. Boys and men can also be victims of sexual assault. I heard Ms. Blackmore give a mature and insightful talk last March 8 at an International Women’s Day event in Creston. She was invited to be the guest speaker at an event in Nelson recently. I was not able to attend but my daughter, who lives in Nelson, did attend and she was very impressed. I am glad the Advance now has a column in which teenagers can express their point of view. If we listen to people of different age groups, cultures and religions in a non-judgmental way, perhaps we may evolve into a tolerant, caring and compassionate society in Creston, Canada and the world. LKB election disappoints resident To the Editor: I am a Lower Kootenay Band member. I have resided on Lower Kootenay Band for the past 34 years; my son is Robin Louie, my daughter is Trina Williams and my adopted son is Jamie Porter. I have eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. This year’s band election started off with receiving campaign emails from the chief for re-election within two weeks prior to the nomination meeting, followed by my brother’s campaign letter. My response to the first email was, what is happening to the Lower Kootenay Band custom elections? How did I get on this email list? If you walk your talk, there should not be a need to campaign. I requested to be removed from the email list.
OPINION LINE
In the 34 years, I was never approached in person or via email to request my vote, especially by a chief who is looking for re-election. There were 10 candidates who put forth their names for this election, with five who were young and three who returned to Lower Kootenay. I was impressed and not surprised by these people who put forth their names. There were six candidates who did not campaign or have anyone campaign for them. At the allcandidate forum, this has been in place for the past eight years. My opinion on this is, with or without a forum, everyone who is voting or who has been asked for their vote for personal reasons already know who they will be voting for. Just a note, for those that live off the Lower Kootenay Band, the community really does not benefit from services that are provided within the community, for those who reside on Lower Kootenay don’ t use some services or choose not to. The election resulted in the one with the highest number of votes becoming chief councilor, with one new councillor and a former councillor. Before the rumors begin, soon after the band election results, my son Robin voluntarily resigned from band council. His letter was well written and delivered to the band membership homes, posted for everyone to see. This had saddened some of those who had voted for Robin in 2012. I am proud of Robin for the decision he has made, and it is true what he has written and no longer are his hands tied; his voice is stronger as Robin Louie. I am not surprised as to the outcome of the band election. I was hoping for a grassroots person and two very new people for councillor and chief. That is my opinion. The external is what public sees — road maintenance, housing repairs and more are day-to-day operations and are carryovers that don’t change because of who is elected into office. What does change is communication with the band membership and internal issues that the public or those that reside off reserve are unware of. LKB membership on the reserve is about 125. Carol Louie Lower Kootenay
Support appreciated To the Editor: On behalf of the Creston branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, I extend thanks and appreciation to the churches, service organizations and residents of the entire Creston Valley for their generous and ongoing support of our poppy campaign. Recent events bring home the importance of our military personnel and reinforces the remembrance and respect that they so richly deserve, past and present. Thank you to everyone who took the time and braved the cold to attend this year’s cenotaph service. Attendance at the services is growing, which indicates an ever-increasing understanding of the meaning of Remembrance Day. “At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.” Branch 29 supports community projects and youth activities, as well as programs for our valley seniors. We have about 400 dues-paying members, but unfortunately only a small percentage can be classed as active and involved. A more involved membership would ease the workload and responsibilities of those striving to keep our legion alive. Ian Currie, Chair Poppy Campaign

Watching winter wildlife
Winter? When is winter? For me, winter is when summer ends. When trees begin to drop their leaves, when plants stop growing, when birds quit laying eggs and fly away, when butterflies and other insects quit flying and crawling about, when bears are done munching apples in the orchards, summer is over and winter has arrived. When growth, reproduction and produc-
tion come to a halt, summer and winter hold hands. Autumn is the meeting of summer and winter. It introduces us to winter. Winter is ushered out with spring and because spring just can’t stop exploding, it brings on the summer season. However, when winter comes, life doesn’t end. Plants are only dormant while they hold last summer’s abundance ready to transform into summer’s verdure and varied colors. Squirrels sleep off cold winter days. Dormant butterflies, caterpillars, chrysalises and insect eggs lay secluded in sheltered crannies. Plants’ “foundations” draw warmth from nearby tree roots, from earthy depths, from warm seeps and from warm basement walls. For some wildlife, winter only slows them down and brings change to their habit. For some humans, watching

Winter wildlife
From page 10 Watching winter wildlife can be a very, almost non-purposeful activity. Many times I have had memorable winter watching opportunities when not even expecting them, when just going on a walk, hike or some other kind of outing for the sake of exercise or to accomplish some task, say, gathering wood. The snowshoe hare (varying hare) is one to sit tight and watch someone go by a half-dozen times, gathering wood, before that someone happens to see them. Then, many surprises show up on trips and outings specifically geared to find birds or other winter wildlife. Each year, many people across the continent participate in the Christmas Bird Count. One such event is held annually in the Creston Valley and will take place this year, on Dec. 27. It begins at 8 a.m. with a launch at the Redeemer Lutheran Church’s basement. It takes some effort to put this together each year and the one to get information from is Sharon Laughlin at 250-428-7289. Watching winter wildlife can simply mean getting out there some way or another, for a little while or a longer while. Look where you would find wildlife — where there is food, water and/or shelter, things birds and animals also need. Look where there are running or open waters, cones and tender tree buds, fence posts, isolated posts and trees, and fruit and berry-bearing trees and shrubs — rose hips, mountain ash and even snowberry. And don’t forget to check out the birdfeeders. Take warm water, wear warm clothes and boots, and take a lunch if necessary. Otherwise, if you don’t, it may turn into a mishap, a “bad” happening. Take a friend, too! Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. He can be reached at 250-866-5747.

It’s probably one of the main calculus 11, social studies 11, chemistry reasons students volunteer. 11, and AVID (Advancement Via Extracurriculars are mainly for interests, Individual Determination) 11/12. like soccer or the school play, but colEvery night, there is always some new leges love when you have that, too. And work for pre-calculus. It’s ridiculous! I probably almost every student has a job, understand that the school year started because they need money for all their late, but I think we deserve at least a little wants and needs. bit of a break. Social studies isn’t my best My volunteering includes many class, so I always need to put extra effort things, like the Teen Action Committee.
The Teen
Take
This keeps me busy all the time, and I do something with it at least once a week. It’s hectic. I also write for the paper (obviously, because you’re reading this column) because of the TAC. I’m also involved in some extracurriculars, such as this year’s school play and my school’s yearbook committee. Yearbook committee is especially draining, because sometimes uploading photos is a hassle. I also have my play practices every Tuesday and Thursday, so that’s another commitment. I really don’t know how I’m managing. And, of course, I have a job. But, I love it, so this one’s a good thing. It almost feels like it’s a break from all the other commitments, and just a time to do regular things that I love, with all of my great coworkers. So, yeah. The life of a teenager is a difficult one. This is just one way to let you know that the life of a teenager isn’t just roses and daisies. The adults that understand that teenagers are busy are so great, because then they don’t expect us to get everything done all at once and give us a good amount of time to get things done. Teenagers are just as busy as adults. My mom always says that education is a teenager’s job. But there are so many other things that are also very important. So, you could say I’m stressed out, and this article was a great stress reliever for me and I’m glad I could rant. Everyone has their troubles in paradise, but everyone can always get through them. Elizabeth Nygren is in Grade 11 at Prince Charles Secondary School. The Teen Take is a column co-ordinated by the Teen Action Committee.

Judokas earn gold medals CRESTON JUDO CLUB
Two members of the Creston Judo Club won gold medals at the prestigious Stevetson Judo Club tournament on Nov. 22 in Richmond. After going undefeated in the round robin in the under-60 kilogram U-14 division, Kyle Qualiteri won gold when he beat a much higher ranked and older blue/green belt in the final match. Also going undefeated in the round robin competition was Kaeden Rendek, who won gold in the U-16 division for under-50 kilogram competitors. Rendek also brought home Creston’s third gold medal of the day when the 14-year-old competitor won against much older and higher ranked participants in the U-18 division. For information on the Creston Judo Club, contact Sheila at 250866-5269 or Pam at 250402-2096. The Club trains Mondays and Thursday from 5-6:30 p.m. for juniors and 6:30-8:30 pm. for senior students. Valley supports Eastern Star lunch fundraiser
www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 15
ORDER OF THE EASTERN STAR A large crowd enjoyed the Order of Eastern Star annual Kountry Kitchen, held in the Masonic Hall in October. The deli table, bake table and 50/50 draw continued to be popular, and were followed with a light lunch. This year’s draw win-
ners were Don Holmes (first prize, three nights and dinner for four at Springbrook Resort), Colleen Murray (second, Mane and Nails beauty salon combo), Myrna Johnson (third, Red Flyer combination wagon and sleigh) and Linda Cunningham (fourth, $100 Overwaitea Foods gift certificate). The 50/50 draw
was won by Richard Miller of Invermere. The Eastern Star extends its appreciation to everyone who helped make the event so memorable, including the businesses who sold tickets, displayed posters and donated prizes, and, last but not least, all the people who attended the function on Oct. 25.
