There are many yardsticks by which families measure the official start to the Christmas season: Putting up the tree, lighting the house decorations, participating in the madness of Black Friday or the sudden and almost magical appearance of Christmas oranges at Overweightea. For others, the spirit of Christmas is

imbued in the festive act of singing and the kickoff to the holidays is tied to the first Wednesday in December, when the doors to Nakusp Secondary School are thrown open for the traditional Rotary Christmas Carol Sing. Emcee and local Rotarian Kees van der Pol welcomed guests to the evening of song and music by reveling in the marvel of being able to host the 28th annual carol sing in Nakusp.

NAKUSP’s 510 Broadway St W, Nakusp, BC (250) 265-3662

“28 annual Christmas carol sings; it’s truly amazing. This is going to be some night tonight,” Van der Pol exclaimed as he quickly got the ball rolling by leading the enthusiastic audience through the familiar carol, “Jingle Bells.” The program for the festive event was filled with a variety of highlights that showcased local musical talents, with occasional interjections of opportunities for the audi-

ence to share in the singing fun. Performers included the Senior Singers, accompanied on piano by Donna Denning; the Arrow Lakes Community Choir who was joined by the Fauq Singers; and the Arrow Lakes String Ensemble, featuring the talents of Marilyn Massey, Rosemarie Parent, Sheila McGinnis, Tasha Bjarnason, Tom Tatlock and Ruth Orcutt.

The Nakusp Falcons had a great weekend. On Friday night, Nakusp Minor hockey put a float in the “Light Up Parade” which most players rode along on or walked beside. They took home the first place ribbon. The Falcons Atoms team hosted Boundary to a Saturday noon hour game which they were bound and determined to win so they can head into the Christmas break with a 5 and 5 record. They seemed to have no problem in doing so. The final score was 9-3 for Nakusp, with seven of those goals being scored by Dakota Fizzard and the other two by Evan Fehler and Thomas Steenholff. On Saturday, the Falcons played host to the Castlegar Jr. Rebels. The first period saw end to end, fast paced hockey but both goalies would not allow any pucks in. Castlegar went up 2-0 early in the second period and the score remained 2-0 at the break. During the break, our newest hockey players the Jr. Falcons, had their hockey debut. They played a 10 minute game and the score was a tie at the buzzer. Fol-

lowing the initiation game, the netting was raised and Nakusp Minor Hockey spectators participated in the second annual Teddy Bear/Toy Toss. All toys were donated to the Nakusp Community Services Holiday Hamper Program. After the long break, both teams hit the ice to finish the second half of the game. Castlegar lead 3-0 early in the third period. Devon Coates got the Falcons on the scoreboard at the 15 minute mark of the third, unassisted, but the Rebels matched that right up. The Falcons would not give up and the coach decided to shuffle the lines up a bit to get something happening. Winger Aidan Hascarl won a battle in the corner, came up with the

puck and put his first ever career goal in the net. Coates would follow that right up with his second of the game. With only one minute left in the game, Falcons pulled the

goalie and put a sixth attacker on the ice to try and tie the game. Falcons could not put the puck in the net and the game remained 4-3 for the Rebels.

NSS boys enjoy free trip to Grey Cup Christmas Gift? And the opportunity to participate in Skills 4 Life Trisha Shanks Arrow Lakes News

Two Nakusp Secondary School students and their fathers found themselves seated in the stands for Grey Cup held in Vancouver on November 30. Cameron Mackintosh and Tim Barisoff were selected from all of the NSS students based on teacher recommendations by the principal, Natasha Miles. The boys and their fathers, local business owner Coleman Mackintosh and NSS staff member Ken Barisoff left Nakusp Saturday to catch their 37-minute flight from Kelowna to Vancouver. The entire weekend was sponsored by the BC Lions, who partnered with the Ministry of Education and Pacific Northwest LNG. On Sunday the foursome attended the Grey Cup, featuring the Calgary Stampeders against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The boys got to head onto the field for the halftime show with

pop group Imagine Dragons. Cameron said, “That was my best memory of the weekend. They’re my favourite band.” Tim agreed, “It was a great time, there were lots of kids from all over the place.” He is referring to the large group of participants who attended the summit on Monday. Singing loud for all to hear is the best way to spread Christmas cheer • Continued from page 1 The Nakusp Secondary Band was also featured on the program bill, but had a last minute brush with potential disaster when band conductor Patrick MacGibbon unfortunately fell ill prior to the event. Van der Pol, determined to include young musicians in the evenings lineup, made a last minute and “very gentle call” to Marilyn Massey, who, after hearing the situation, immediately volunteered to conduct the group through their five song set list. MacGibbon’s charismatic contribution to the carol sing was dearly missed, however, thanks to the skilled guidance of Massey his band was

able to carry on. “And look how well they did without him,” Van der Pol teased. The Annual Christmas Carol Sing is made possible through the efforts of members of the Rotary Club of Nakusp, choral volunteers and assistance from School District 10, Overweightea and the Arrow Lakes Fine Arts Guild. Local Rotary president, Bill Tobey, was invited to speak and shared with the audience his favourite words of the Christmas holidays: Peace on Earth, and good will towards men. “These words can be said in any language and in any culture,” Tobey explained. “They can be said in any re-

Yaremchuk was joined centre stage by current inbound youth exchange Nakusp Secondary student, Patricio Morfin, and helped lead the audience through the delightfully international carol, “Feliz Navidad.”

Our View

No quick fix Everyone is gearing up for the Christmas season, that wonderful time of year focused on giving. There are food drives collecting for the food bank, and campaigns of all kinds to help those in need, including toy drives trying to ensure all children have something waiting for them under the Christmas tree. This is a great thing, and it is good-hearted people that both organize and contribute to them. But the best they can hope for, and it is a good goal, is to alleviate some of the need. The sad fact is, the issue of child poverty is not going to be solved by a once-a-year campaign. According to the annual report released by First Call, a coalition of advocacy groups, child poverty is on the rise in B.C. rather than declining. The B.C. Child Poverty Report Card says 153,000 children were living below the poverty line in this province in 2012. Last year, the report said 169,240 children. First Call set out 19 recommendations in their report with a goal of reducing the provincial child poverty rate to seven per cent by 2020. The recommendations cover a range, from raising the minimum wage to increased child tax benefits and rescinding cuts to Employment Insurance. But what they all have in common is the need for provincial and federal governments to address the problem. Back in 1989 — yes, 25 years ago — all political parties in the House of Commons collectively vowed to end child poverty in a decade. We’re still waiting. And, obviously, it’s not an easy solution to come by, but when we see the enormity of the problem of child poverty, it is clear it is time for upper levels of government to join in the fight to make some longterm change. We can’t wait another 25 years.

The Happy Homemaker C H ANTELLE C ARTER Seeing as it’s cookie… I mean, Christmas season, I thought I would share a couple of my favourite recipes that have been a hit amongst my friends and cookie exchange goers alike. I try and make these as gifts every year for my neighbours and friends but they tend to disappear before I can get them out the door. I feel these recipes should come with a warning! Christmas Crack (Warning: Highly Addictive) Ingredients: •Cooking spray •35 to 40 saltine crackers •1 cup butter •1 cup light brown sugar •8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips (about 1 1/3 cups) Directions: Preheat the oven to 425 F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil, spray with nonstick spray and arrange the saltines salt-side down in a single layer. In a medium saucepan, melt Ryan Willman Reporter

the butter and brown sugar together and boil until it turns a caramel color, a few minutes. Remove from heat and pour over the crackers, covering them evenly. Put the pan into the oven and bake for three to five minutes, or until just bubbly, watching carefully. Remove from the oven and pour the chocolate chips over the crackers. When the chips melt a bit, spread them over the crackers with a knife. Transfer the pan to the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until completely cold. They will form one big sheet. Break up into pieces. Store in an airtight container. Bailey’s Irish Cream Truffles Ingredients: •1/4 cup Bailey’s Irish Cream liqueur •1 Tablespoon butter •12 oz. semisweet chocolate •2 egg yolks •1/4 cup heavy cream Directions: Melt chocolate, Bailey’s and heavy cream

together over very low heat. Whisk in yolks, one at a time — mixture will thicken. Whisk in butter. Refrigerate overnight, or until firm. With spoon make small balls. Roll in powdered sugar, cocoa, chopped nuts, sprinkles, etc. Place in festive little cupcake or candy wrappers and put in little candy box or plastic wrap with some ribbon. Makes 1 dozen truffles. I would also like to remind you all to bring a dozen of your favourite cookies, along with the recipe, to the News Office before 5 p.m. on December 17 to enter into our Ultimate Cookie Competition. We are holding an Open House on December 18 from 1 to 3 p.m., so that you can meet and mingle with the staff, drink hot chocolate, and vote on your favourite cookie. All submitted recipes will be published in our Christmas edition, as well as the Ultimate Cookie Champion receiving a beautiful gift basket donated by Treasure Trove Kitchens & Gifts. So warm up those ovens Valley Friends and get baking!

Festival attendee Chantal Broughton said, “It’s better to have it downtown with all the businesses open.” This is the first year that the stalls and entertainment have been set up on Broadway; in past years it has been held at the gazebo park on Eighth Ave. “This is the best we’ve ever had. I would love to see it expanded even further down

Broadway next year,” Mayor Karen Hamling. She estimated the crowd to be more than 400 people. Several hundred people descended on the courthouse block of Broadway—circulating through the stores, open later than usual for the Moonlight Madness event— singing carols under the lamplight and keeping warm around supervised burn barrels specially decorated for the occasion. Christmas music was piped in from an excellent sound system set up on the patio of the Broadway Deli, inside which local photographer Deb Booth was having a wine and cheese meet and greet. Overwaitea was cooking up smokies on the grill. Nakuspians were spoiled for activities, from sampling chili for the cook-off contest benefitting the Heart and Stroke Foundation, to buying borscht, mulled wine, hot chocolate with handmade marshmallows and

Community bus fills up for the food bank TRISHA SHANKS Arrow Lakes News

For one day in December the community bus is parked outside of Overwaitea Foods to drum up additional support for the local food bank during the Christmas season. This year, Ann Miskulin was busy grilling hot dogs to offer those who made a cash or a food donation. The bus was waiting to collect and cart off the extra donations desperately needed at this time of year. Miskulin, is the Food Bank Coordinator for Arrow and Slocan Lakes Community

Services, explained, “Overwaitea is great. They set everything up for us. All we have to do is bring the bus and have somebody here to man the hotdog stand. That’s it. They donate the hot dogs, too.” For Nakusp and area residents going through hard times, the food bank is a valuable resource. During the Christmas season, up to 30 volunteers collaborate to wrap presents, sort and pack the hampers and check the expiry dates on everything. “Come to our office, you can put someone’s name on the form

Many of us enjoy having a drink while socializing, relaxing and celebrating various special events. However, it’s important to know that as we age, many of us become keenly sensitive to the effects that alcohol has on our bodies. This substance is absorbed and distributed throughout the body’s total water content. With age, we tend to lose lean body mass, resulting in more body fat buildup while less water remains in the body to dilute the alcohol, according to representatives of the BC Ministry of Health. On the other hand, not all seniors are made the same and the end results can vary according to our age and gen-

— just make sure that those people will accept it.” Miskulin adds. Some people might be too proud to receive the charity. Local hampers must be picked up in person — deliveries are only done in Edgewood and Fauquier. As of now, there are no formalities to regulate who gets a Christmas hamper. “We are not there to say yes or no. If you have your name in, then you get a hamper. der, health status and other determining factors, all of which need to be taken into account. A primary reason why some older persons begin drinking to excess include the loss of a loved one, lack of meaningful employment, one’s overall poor health or lack of mobility. Any of these factors point to facing life altering changes and wherever possible should be attended to without delay. The Centre for Addictions Research of BC advises that older persons in general who choose to drink would be wise to pay attention to the following suggestions: • Drink the suggested amount below — fewer than 10 drinks weekly for women and fewer than 15 for men. • Avoid consuming alcohol when you are also taking medications or check with a health professional for further information and advice.

those who are able to give today, whether it be food or cash. And to make it a fun event. A big thank you to the people of Nakusp who donate — Overwaitea, the stores. Everybody’s been great,” Miskulin stated. The food bank operates year-round with access to free food every Friday between 10 a.m. and noon. The program is designed to assist each household once a month for a pickup and all items are prepackaged into hampers for singles and families. Call (250) 2653674 ext 213 for more information.

• Note that a standard drink has 13.6 grams of alcohol within its contents. In the case of five ounces of wine, this means 12 per cent alcohol, and with 1.5 ounces of liquor this amounts to 40 per cent alcohol. Within 1 bottle of beer (12 ounce size), five per cent alcohol is present. If you know of someone who needs help, a variety of options are available on a confidential basis. Examples include contacting a registered nurse at the Nakusp health unit, a physician or HealthLinkBC. Further information concerning alcohol consumption is available via the Alcohol and Drug Information and Referral Service (free and 24/7). Also, individual and family support group representatives can supply meeting place details including those in Nakusp and surrounding areas.
