PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE

ICF awaits funding Local politicians still doubt trains will re-start JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Julian Fell says he has been blacklisted by the Island Corridor Foundation. Fell is the Regional District of Nanaimo’s representative to the ICF’s board of directors. In a close vote, the RDN decided in August to give the ICF almost $1 million to help the effort to revive passenger rail service on the Island. Fell, along with directors representing Bowser, Nanoose Bay, Qualicum Beach and Parksville, voted against the funding request, but the motion passed on the strength of the RDN board’s Nanaimo contingent. “The ICF board met in October and they didn’t invite me,” Fell, who represents Errington/Coombs said this week. “I appear to be on their black list.” Fell was asked what he knew about the ICF’s progress toward restoring passenger rail service on the Island, which was halted in 2011 due to safety concerns. “You’ll have to ask them (the ICF),” said Fell. “They don’t return calls — mine or anyone else’s.” ICF CEO Graham Bruce returned a call from The NEWS within 15 minutes on Tuesday. Bruce said former RDN and Nanaimo city councillor Ted Greves resigned from the ICF board in July and the ICF board had not approved Fell as a member by the October meeting. “There’s a process that needs to be followed and that’s what (the ICF board) is doing,” said Bruce. The ICF has been seeking funding from both the provincial and federal governments after regional districts up and down the Island agreed to kick in a total of about $7 million. Matching funds from Victoria and Ottawa were supposed to give the ICF more than $20 million, money Bruce said would be enough to get the track operational. See SERVICE COULD BE HERE, page A7

FLOODING AND HEAVY RAINS FORCE EVACUATIONS

State of emergency declared CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

A severe storm pelting the Island with heavy rains and wind has resulted in evacuations, power outages and elementary school students being pulled out of classes. Seven people and three pets were rescued Tuesday night after a State of Local Emergency was declared by the regional district for Parry’s RV Park on Martindale Road, located on the banks of the Englishman River. Arrowsmith Search and Rescue’s Michael Addiscott said there have been no reported injuries from the

flood. He said crews were called to the scene at approximately 5:30 p.m. “Water levels have risen about four feet,” said Addiscott, noting emergency personal were “chest-deep” in water. He said the RV park’s close vicinity to rising tides and the river make for a difficult situation. Addiscott, a swiftwater rescue team member, said first responders spent the night in zodiac boats ferrying park residents from 12 homes, with just a few bags in tow, to a dry harbour. Addiscott said the residents spent Tuesday night in a nearby motel and there is no indication, as of press time Wednesday, when they will be al-

lowed back in their homes. “One of the biggest concerns wasn’t just the water,” he said. “It’s also that the water might get contaminated.” Addiscott explains septic fields can often become contaminated by vehicles leaking fuel and the many other chemicals people have laying around their homes. “That all gets picked up by water,” he said. “Contamination is huge.” Addiscott said the cost of damages incurred is unknown. Parksville Volunteer Fire Department and the Oceanside RCMP also attended the scene.

Stanhope emotional about chair position

CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

Joe Stanhope reclaimed his position as chair of the Regional District of Nanaimo board Tuesday night — 2015 will be his 13th consecutive year at the head of this board table. As no other names came forward, Stanhope, who represents French Creek, took the chair by acclamation after being nominated by Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay. “It’s overwhelming,” Stanhope told The NEWS, holding back tears. “It suddenly just clicked — there’s a lot of people who support me here.” Stanhope said he was expecting to see some opposition, but was pleasantly surprised that nobody stepped up to vie for the position. “You just never know,” he said. “There’s always people interested (in the chair position).” Stanhope said top of mind will be bringing new directors up to speed with regional district processes and balancing the budget. Meanwhile, recently-elected Lantzville Mayor Colin Haime ran unopposed for the deputy chair position. Haime said he’s looking forward to working together on a regional basis with neighbouring municipalities and electoral areas. Haime was previously Lantzville’s mayor from 2003 to 2011, and he sat as his community’s RDN director during that time. See WESTBROEK WANTS NAME CHANGE, page A6

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY

Qualicum fire hall leads nation The building is expected to be the most environmentally-friendly fire hall facility in the entire country when it is completed this summer AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

Qualicum Beach is building the country’s most environmentally-friendly fire hall. “Our goal was to be 75 per cent more efficient than the next most efficient fire hall in Canada; right now we’re at about 73 per cent,” said project manager Walter Hoogland. In that calculation, he included the installation of solar panels on the roof, for which they are waiting for a $400-$500,000 grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund. The energy efficiency measures include everything from LED lighting, low flow toilets, reused materials, in-floor heating, lots of windows to decrease light use and as much local material as possible. “The goal was to source everything within 500 kilometres,” Hoogland said, listing off materials from much closer, including the concrete and finishing cedar from Coombs, the cladding from Nanaimo and the extensive glass from Victoria. The building will not be officially LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, but will still meet or surpass the LEED requirements. Mayor Teunis Westbroek said Questions come up about the efficiency aspect will cost certain costs, or the more up front but save operating size of the budget, but I costs in the long term. think those are usually The need for a new fire hall answered has been talked about for years TEUNIS WESTBROEK in Qualicum Beach and got rolling in 2007 when the current site — 150 Rupert Road, by the roundabout — was chosen. Council developed a financial plan in 2009 which includes a one per cent property tax increase (average $14 per property) every year for five years, starting last year. That will bring in about $500,000 and Westbroek said they never stop looking for ways to save money and applying for grants to help cut down the amount they will eventually have to borrow. The total cost is estimated at $6.5 million, which John Marsh, acting as chief administrative officer at the time, previously said includes absolutely everything, right down to the furniture. Along with expansion space, the new hall will include facilities for the volunteer fire fighters, including a fitness gym, day-use room with kitchen, lots of storage and properly designed rooms for gear and breathing apparatus, including hazmat decontamination. Built to post-disaster standards, the building

would also be crucial in any major emergency like an earthquake, acting as an emergency services hub and potentially providing shelter. Westbroek said the town’s fire hall working group, led by Hoogland, was instrumental in planning the project and deciding what it should include, working by consensus. “The working group really did their homework,” said Hoogland, wanting to thank the three civilian, or resident members specifically: Jason Davies, Greg Husband and Sandy Vogstad. The group also included senior town staff like Director of Planning Luke Sales, Director of Engineering Bob Weir, and eventually the chosen architect and engineer. Each member of council also attended at least one of the monthly meetings, Hoogland said. The group developed four basic design options and chose the one with the best traffic flow, where fire trucks enter the property on the east side, drive around to the back of the building and enter four, extra-long drive-through bays, exiting straight out onto Rupert Road. Hoogland said the group found the location to be ideal, providing the best access to town, the highway and surrounding communities for the increasingly important mutual aid work they do.

“There hasn’t been a lot of opposition,” Westbroek said. “Questions come up about certain costs, or the size of the budget, but I think those are usually answered.” “We did everything through consensus and got everything we needed for these guys for the next 50 years,” Hoogland said on a recent site tour in the mud and driving rain. They were scheduled to have a 100-ton crane lifting large sections of laminate pre-fabricated floor panels, but the wind was too strong and part of their shipment was delayed by ferry cancellations due to the wind. Weather is often an issue on big projects, said Dennis Brooks, construction manager with general contractor Windley Contracting. They are about a month behind schedule, due to the weather and some design changes, but everything is progressing nicely, Westbroek said. Construction started this summer and with the use of pre-fabricated components, Brooks said things will come together very quickly when the weather cooperates. The goal is to get the bulk of the structure up before Christmas, which will give them a sheltered, controlled environment to work in for the next six months, hoping to finish by the summer.

“What happens in one area affects the entire region,” said Haime. “I’m looking forward to working with Joe in a position other than as a director … He’s someone I respect, who has a wealth of history and knowledge about local government.” Alongside Haime, new additions to the board include Qualicum Beach mayor Teunis Westbroek, Nanaimo mayor Bill McKay, Nanoose Bay director Bob Rogers and Nanaimo councillors: William Yoachim, Wendy Pratt, Ian Thorpe and Jerry Hong. Westbroek, returning to the board after a three-year hiatus, was already toting new mo-

tions at the RDN’s first meeting of the year. “My first notice of motion is going to be to change the name from the Regional District of Nanaimo to the Regional District of Benson-Arrowsmith to better reflect the area,” said Westbroek. “That way people won’t think we’re all part of Nanaimo.” Representatives from Qualicum First Nation, Snaw-Naw-As (Nanoose First Nation) and Snuneymuxw attended the meeting pledging their support to the board, and vowing to work in partnership with the new politicians. Judge Justine Saunders swore in the new board.

OCEANSIDE TAXI BOUGHT ALLIANCE TAXI EIGHT MONTHS AGO

Only one cab company here Police urge residents to ensure they have a safe ride home this holiday season CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

Parksville Qualicum Beach has eight taxi cabs servicing more than 40,000 people spread over 500 square kilometres. And Oceanside Taxi is the only gig in town. Owner Joti Gill said his business amalgamated with their former competition, Alliance Taxi, eight months ago. Gill said he purchased Alliance’s four cab licences during the transition, doubling his company’s stock. He said Oceanside Taxi services the area from Nanoose Bay to Qualicum Bay and westward to Whiskey Creek, 24 hours per day. As soon as you get in a cab, it’s $3.50, and you are then charged $2 a kilometre. Comparatively, Nanaimo’s Yellow Cab starts at $3.15 and users are charged $2.18 per kilometre. Gill said the average wait time for a cab is 15 to 20 minutes. But Dan Brodeur, general manager of the Rod and Gun, the region’s only nightclub, said some nights customers wait up to 45 minutes for a cab. “I’m not in the cab business whatsoever so I

can’t understand what they are going through,” said Brodeur, noting Oceanside Taxi has a large area to cover. “But we’re a big source of income for them … they have eight cabs but who knows how many are on shift.” Parksville’s Upper Deck Sports Bar manager Darrell St. Pierre said “in peak seasons there seems to be a shortage (of cabs).” However, St. Pierre said wait-times typically aren’t a problem otherwise. Gill said having eight taxi cabs is a number based on population and controlled by the transportation board of B.C. He admits “December is very busy” as well as most Friday and Saturday nights. According to the Regional District of Nanaimo’s transit schedule website the last weekday bus leaves the Parksville Exchange at 10:01 p.m. and the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre at 10:29 p.m. On Saturdays the last bus leaves at 7:01 p.m. and 7:29 p.m., respectively. On New Years Eve transit will run a “modified free service” from 8:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said “police will be out in full force this holiday season ensuring people find safe rides home and if they aren’t willing to do that, they can deal with it on the roadside.”

Qualicum Bay person injured in landslide One person was airlifted to hospital Wednesday afternoon after a landslide hit Little Qualicum River Estates, according to RDN officials. RCMP visited each home in the subdivision and

residents were advised to evacuated the area; they were referred to an emergency reception centre at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. Keep checking www.pqbnews.com for updates.

25K Islanders without power

CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1

First responders were on the scene until 11 p.m. Tuesday night. Meanwhile, many Parksville Qualicum Beach residents were left in the dark Tuesday. According to BC Hydro, at peak times more than 8,200 people went without power. BC Hydro spokesperson Karla Louwers said Horne Lake, Errington and Bowser were “the hardest hit areas.” Louwers said nine additional crews have been working on restoring power and by Wednesday morning only 50 homes were without power, most of which were in Bowser. On Vancouver Island, more than 25,000 people were without power. Environment Canada issued a wind and rainfall warning Wednesday morning for east Vancouver Island, forecast-

ing gusts up to 90 km/h and rainfall to range from 40 to 70 mm. Wind and rainfall warnings are issued when significant risk is expected from damaging winds and high rainfall.

It’s a huge endeavor — We don’t move down that pathway unless we have to ROLLIE KOOP

Louwers said power was on and off throughout the area due to the weather, tree-related outages and restoration work. On Tuesday, both Errington and Bowser Elementary were dismissed early due to power outages at the

schools sending nearly 500 students home before schedule. “This isn’t a common occurrence (sending students home early),” said School District 69 Superintendent Rollie Koop. “It’s a really challenging process.” Koop explained district officials had to rely on one rotary phone and personal cell phones to contact all the parents of the students who were dismissed early. “It’s a huge endeavor,” he said. “We don’t move down that pathway unless we have to.” According to Environment Canada, the wind and rainfall are supposed to subside by the weekend. Up Island, Courtenay declared a State of Emergency due to flooding on Tuesday.

Service could be here three days a week CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1

Bruce said the information that’s now in the hands of senior government officials from the ICF requesting funds is “very, very thorough. They are doing their review.” Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre has consistently said he doesn’t think that amount of money will be enough to do the required repairs. “I don’t believe for $20 million you are going to get a passenger rail service up and running from Victoria to Cour-

tenay,” Lefebvre said this week. “This is a dog that’s not going to hunt.” As a city councillor, Lefebvre was Parksville’s rep on the RDN board for three years and he will continue in that role as mayor. He said, like Fell, he would like some answers from the ICF. “What we can’t get is an activity report from anybody at the ICF . . . about what work they have been doing since 2011,” said Lefebvre.

Bruce said the ICF would use the $20 million to replace 104,000 railway ties from Victoria to Courtenay. He said that work would take nine-12 months and start in Victoria, working its way north. Bruce said the schedule would see twice-daily service service from Nanaimo to Victoria and return service from Qualicum Beach to Victoria (stopping in Parksville) on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Eve Flynn has returned to the chair’s position of School District No. 69’s Board of Trustees after a vote Monday during the new board’s inaugural meeting on Monday. Flynn, who won Area E by acclamation in November’s election, was previously school board chair from 2008-2011. On Monday she said her first order of business isto get to know the new members of the board and their strengths, and to tackle the budget in January. “The budget will be key to the activities in spring,” she said. During this process, Flynn said the board will also evaluate the recent reconfiguration of schools in the district. In particular, they’ll look at how the transition back to a K-7/ 8-12 is going and how the model is working for students. Barry Kurland, who was acclaimed in Area H, was seclected as vice-chair. From left, Chair Eve Flynn, Trustee Julie Austin, Trustee Jacob Gair (background), Vice-chair Barry Kurland and Trustee Elaine Young were sworn in as the new school board for School District No. 69 (Qualicum) on Monday.

Julie Austin, who was re-elected in Area F, accepted nominations for both the positions of chair and vice-chair. Trustees Elaine Young and Jacob Gair, both new to the school board for Area G this year, did not receive nominations. All trustees were sworn in by Secretary Treasurer Erica Bailey. “As a trustee, you are in a position of trust,” said Bailey to the new board members. She also encouraged them to work together and remain diligent

in their job of overseeing the education of the district’s students. The new board held its first meeting the next day, and business included talk about some surplus funds due to the teachers’ strike, the establishment of a French Advisory Committee and the release of the district’s financial statements. What’s in a name?

I

f you give your organization a big-enough sounding name, can you purport to speak for thousands, even if you aren’t much more than a coffee klatch? It would be good for democracy here if there was a Parksville residents’ association with hundreds of members from all points in the political spectrum, with well-publicized and well-attended meetings, a website and an active executive with a mandate to put together position papers for city council and staff to consider. Selfishly, it would be good for us too — a go-to source for comment about the affairs of the city. A real residents association with an active membership could organize debates during elections, help voters focus on some issues and perhaps even increase interest in municipal politics. The considerably smaller community of Qualicum Beach has a few such organizations. Is it coincidence the voter turnout in Qualicum Beach last month was north of 60 per cent and in Parksville it was less than 35 per cent? We think not. A search for the Parksville Residents’ Association (PRA) on the web is pretty much a fruitless exercise. There is no link to this supposed association from the city’s website. The city lists a number of links for organizations, but not the PRA. The PRA is apparently a member of something called the Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition — that’s the extent of the PRA’s existence on the web, aside from some mentions in news stories. And the PRA is not a member of the Federation of Oceanside Residents’ Associations. The PRA, or at least the person who sent us the news release (see story in Tuesday’s edition of The NEWS), wants the new city council to conduct a town-hall-style meeting about the water treatment plant. Fair enough. Good idea. The scope and price of the current proposal may need to be scaled down considerably. This suggestion was raised a number of times during the election campaign. What standing does the PRA have to call for this kind of meeting and to allege the process has been “secretive”? Perhaps no standing is required. Hmmm, does that mean we can get a few buddies together once in a while, call ourselves the World Residents’ Association and expect standing at the United Nations? Cool, we see a trip to Manhattan in our future. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters CHECK YOUR SOURCE

The letters by Jim Drummond (Nov. 25) and the Dec. 4 letter by Janet Thony about GMOs require context. Genetically engineered crops (aka GMOs) and derived food involves complex science and are unfortunately also severely misunderstood by the public. The Internet is chalk full of false information about GMOs and the average person is unable to differentiate between the real science and the prolific pseudo-science that is designed to generate fear. Some of the best sources of good information are national and international food safety, health and science bodies. Some of the best sources are the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, Health Canada and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. A good review of GE crops can be read in the 2010 National Academy of Science report-Impact of GE crops on Farm Sustainability in the U.S. (available free on-line). A global perspective comes from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the British Royal Society and every other respected organization that has examined the evidence has come to the same conclusion: consuming foods containing ingredients derived from GM crops is no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques. Critics of GE crops and derived food often claim European science says something different. Readers might want to check the European National Academies of Science Advisory Council 2013 report, Planting the Future (available free on-line):

www.pqbnews.com

QUOTABLE:

“My first notice of motion is going to be to change the name... to the Regional District of Benson-Arrowsmith...” TEUNIS WESTBROEK, see story page A3

“There is no validated evidence that GM crops have greater adverse impact on health and the environment than any other technology used in plant breeding. There is compelling evidence that GM crops can contribute to sustainable development goals with benefits to farmers, consumers, the environment and the economy.” These statements from global expert organizations clearly demonstrate the overwhelming consensus on the safety of GE crops and derived foods. I encourage people to seek out these organizations if they want to learn the real science of GMOs. ROBERT WAGER, VANCOUVER ISLAND UNIVERSITY Nanaimo

FAIRWINDS CATSPAN During the recent November cold weather, CatSpan was contacted about kittens crying on an empty lot on Evanshire Court in Fairwinds. We hoped to try and catch them quickly before they froze or starved to death. We thought the property was owned by the people who called us about the kittens, and tried to feed them there to get them used to our traps. CatSpan is dedicated to humanely and safely trapping feral cats/kittens and getting them the care they need. We do so without harming cats or any other wildlife. Unfortunately the property where we fed was private property. The owners may have mistaken our intent — which was to rescue kittens — with some other purpose. We couldn’t put a sign up where we were, as we can’t leave a cat vulnerable in a trap and known to the public, sadly enough there are people who harm animals. Ultimately our traps were taken and so was the food.

CatSpan is a local registered charity, which operates on the generosity of donors and the loss of the traps and the opportunity to rescue these kittens has been quite a setback. One of the traps was specifically for kittens. The trapper — a senior and a laborer — bought that trap with hard earned money to help CatSpan rescue cats. We respectfully ask whoever took our traps to please contact CatSpan and return them, especially the kitten trap. You can contact us at nanoosecatspan@gmail.com or call the numbers on our website to let us know how to make arrangements to get the traps. We would also like to thank the Fairwinds Community Association for their help and the residents we spoke to that offered support and help locating the kittens. Our apologies to the owners of the vacant lot for trespassing — if you were the ones who removed the traps — and for not leaving a note explaining why we were there. For those who don’t know of our work, our intent was to TNR (trap, neuter, return) provide vet care for the kittens and relocate them or socialize for adoption. True feral cats (wild) are neutered so they can’t reproduce. We try to return them to their colonies where they are fed or they are placed in barn homes. You can find out more about CatSpan on Facebook or our website, www. catspanferals.com/ If you would like to help, either by donating money, replace our kitten trap or to support our work in the community we would be most grateful. Donations can be sent to CatSpan, P.O Box 64 Nanoose Bay, B.C., V9P 9J9 or online via CanadaHelps.org We are a registered charity. SHAWN HOOPER, CATSPAN Nanoose Bay

quickly. With this in mind, Hyundai has backed away from the fluid approach to a more sculpted design that shares some styling cues from the top-of-range Hyundai Genesis. The front features a squarer grille opening, edgier bumper and front chin-spoiler. The base model is fitted with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has and 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels with LED daytime running lights, halogen headlamps or HID lights on the limited trim. The performance oriented 2.0 Turbo Sport model, seen above, comes with a two-toned front spoiler, 18-inch wheels, standard HID headlamps, quad exhaust tips and a lower diffuser on the rear bumper. The top trim levels of both the 2.4L and 2.0 Sport have a blacked-out section of the front grille which signifies the car comes with adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system.

Verdict Hyundai has done it again, delivering a very attractive car, full of features, at an attractive price. 2.4L models range from $23,999 to $32,999 in the top Limited trim. This model has most of the features found in the top 2.0L turbo but without the added power. The base 2.0L turbo starts at $30,999 and the top Ultimate model, seen here, is $34,799. Both the Limited and Ultimate get the forward collision warning system and lane departure safety features, plus they also get adaptive cruise control. For 2015, the Sonata is a big step foreword in design. The added safety features will be attractive and the constant pushing-of-the-envelope from Hyundai is welcome. The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 185hp or 2.0L Turbo with 245hp Fill-up: 9.8L/6.7L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $23.999-$34,799 zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Drive Both the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and the 2.0L turbo have been carried over from the last model but they have been modified to produce better torque delivery and fuel economy. Hyundai has dropped the horsepower output from 198hp to 185hp in the 2.4L and limited the torque to 178hp. The 2.0L turbo also receives a horsepower drop from 274hp to 245hp and the torque drops from 268 lb.-ft to 160 lb.-ft. Hyundai claims that the torque is lower in the RPM range and the fuel consumption is improved. The experience behind the wheel of the turbo is still very invigorating but not as hectic as the last model, it delivers a more usable driving experience. Power is smooth and refined; the turbo feels like a V6 without the accompanying fuel bill.

Import brands dominate Canadian Car of the Year Awards While I didn’t expect the Volvo V60 Polestar to eclipse Ford Mustang GT, it was certainly good to see Volvo, a company with a great history that was teetered on the brink of extinction, back in the winner’s circle.” Bob McHugh

’’

The 2015 Canadian Car of the Year competition moved in to its final phase with the announcement of the final fifteen “Best New” category winners by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, better known as AJAC. These category winners were chosen by 73 Canadian automotive journalists following a recently completed hands-on, five-day, backto-back evaluation drive event, known as “TestFest”, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The testing is both detailed and a challenging process that generated 1,640 evaluation drives, approximately 106,405 data points and 500 category ballots. “TestFest is the most intensive new vehicle evaluation process on the planet,” said CCOTY Co-Chair, Gary Grant. “No other organization employs such stringent testing methods to determine their car of year award winners. Data driven and Canadian expertise: that’s what makes an AJAC winner”. The 2015 Canadian Car of the Year “Best New” award winners are: City Car: Kia Soul EV Small Car (under $21k): Honda Fit Small Car (over $21k): Volkswagen Golf Family Car (under $30k): Subaru Legacy 2.5i Family Car (over $30k): Hyundai Sonata

Drives-U-Crazy

When the snow falls, watch out for drivers who couldn’t be bothered to sweep the white stuff from the roof of their car before setting out in the morning. They are a danger to themselves and other road users. When the car heats up that snow generally slides down in a block over their windshield causing one-car white out conditions, long enough for them to collide with you! overall Canadian Car of the Year. The RLX is an amazing sophisticated automobile that could yet win a new technology award. There were just two entries in all-electric City Car category and the Kia Soul EV was a clear winner. I’ve heard both small car victors Honda Fit and VW Golf talked about as the potential overall winner. The double wins for Subaru and Hyundai were a bit of a surprise (to some) but it was certainly nice to see

In addition, AJAC will also present 2015 awards for Best New Technology (January 15 / Montreal Auto Show) and Canadian Green Car of the Year (March 24 / Vancouver Auto Show). Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Subaru were all double winners and, as usual, there were a few surprises. You can look at the voting and scoring details plus all the collected data on performance (acceleration, braking, fuel economy, etc.) on the AJAC web site (ajac. ca). You can also look back on previous winners going all the way back to 1985, when the Volkswagen Golf (an omen perhaps?) was a winner. A few weeks ago, I made some winner predictions for the seven categories that I managed to drive all entries, while at Testfest. Three proved to be right on the mark, two were runner-ups, but sadly, my Toyota Camry Hybrid and Chevrolet Tahoe choices were completely off target. The Acura RLX Hybrid was my most disappointing non-winner, as I also considered it a good candidate for

Clay Mates show modelling clay can be artistic Multi-media pieces dominate show JESSICA SKELTON

reporter@pqbnews.com

Rose Gauthier, Lynn Orriss, Joyce Grenon and Pat Hart of the Mid-Island Polymer Art Guild — A.K.A the Clay Mates — are here to show that modelling clay isn’t just for kids crafts. “There’s probably more time put into it than a painting,” said Orriss, who herself is a painter. “Yet it’s still seen as more of a craft than an art form.” This year, the group is holding a show at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply. On display are decorative boxes, pieces of jewellery and wall hangings of all shapes, sizes and colours. The main attraction, however, are art journals filled with acid-free paper and fronted by covers sculpted from clay. “There’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into these,” said Bonnie Luchtmeijer of the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply. In particular, the Clay Mates use a polymer clay. This pliable substance can extruded, moulded or sculpted into pretty much anything, explained Gauth-

ier. She also said that this particular clay doesn’t need the high temperatures of a kiln to set. Instead, the artists simply put their pieces into a regular kitchen oven at around 250-300 degrees. Orriss also added that the clay is versatile in the fact that one can put glazes on it, polish it, paint it before or after firing it. It also lends itself well to other media. In fact, many of the Clay Mate’s show pieces include beads, wood, metal, wire, paint and more to augment the clay. “The techniques are endless,” said Grenon. The Clay Mates started learning all these techniques around 10 years ago when Vickie Turner brought the group together and introduced them to polymer clay, Orriss explained. Although Turner has since moved to Eastern Canada, Orriss said the group is still going strong. “She really got us going,” said Gauthier. Orriss said while the group varies in size depending on the season, she, Gauthier, Grenon and Hart (who hail from Parksville and Gabriola Island) continually make up the core of Clay Mates. They get together once a month at one of their home studios to share new ideas

Craft fair gets set for second weekend Thirty-three different vendors to fill Hall JESSICA SKELTON

Susanne Vignault of Moondance Tie Dye is the organizer for the annual Errington Craft Faire. This is the third year she has stretched the show over two weekends, with each having different vendors. “I got tired of saying no to everyone,” she said.

Even if you went to the annual Errington Craft Faire last week, the second installment of the event this Saturday will have plenty of new handmade items for you to browse. That’s because the Errington Hall will be filled with 33 different vendors. “You have to come twice to see everything,” said organizer Susanne Vignault. Vignault, who has organized the event for five years, said this is the third time that the annual fair has stretched over two weekends. “I got tired of saying no to everyone,” she said. “I had a waiting list the size of the Hall.” She also said that having different vendors each weekend has helped introduce variety to the show. According to Vignault, the Errington Craft Faire started around 30 years ago as an event in which only vendors from Errington were allowed to sell, and many of those people would come year after year. Some of those vendors still have booths at the

show, and Vignault said those are who you’ll see this weekend. “It’s a real social event,” she said, comparing it to meeting up with old friends. Now, however, Vignault says that the first weekend of the Errington Craft Faire is mostly reserved for people who are new to the show. Also, no matter if you’re new or returning, Vignault said nobody can rent more than one table at the event. “We’re trying to keep it as big as possible and keep variety,” she said. This weekend you’ll find a selection of fibre arts, jewellery, candles, soap, baking and more. Also, each vendor has donated one of their items into a basket draw. To enter, simply fill out the ballot form you’ll receive from each individual vendor you buy something from. As always, the fair is also a fundraiser. All proceeds from booth rentals will go to the Errington Hall. The last Errington Craft Faire of the year is this Saturday Dec. 13. Doors open at 10 a.m. and admission is free. There is also a concession stand. For more information, call 250-954-2922 or email susanneandguy@shaw.ca

THE MESSIAH AT KNOX UNITED CHURCH DEC. 14

Classic spin on an old favourite Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra joins Parksville & District Community Choir for the first time JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pbqnews.com

The Parksville & District Community Choir will put a classic twist on an old favourite for their 45th annual Christmas Concert this weekend. The choir will sing Handel’s Messiah and for the first time, they will be accompanied by The Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra, led by Karl Rainer. “It’s going to be much more like the original,” said the choir’s director Ann Barber. “Handel intended it to be for a smaller chamber orchestra.” The opportunity comes in part thanks to choir member Kathy Larson, who takes cello lessons with NCO’s music librarian, principle cellist and chair of the board Diana Fletcher. Larson said she brought her connection to the Nanaimo music group to Barber’s attention, who then took over the job of organizing a show with the NCO. “Handel’s Messiah is one of the most famous great pieces,” said Larson. “With the orchestra, it will be amazing.” This isn’t the first time the choir has sung Messiah or been accompanied by an orchestra. Larson said the group’s archives show the choir first sang the piece in 1974 and has performed it every few years since then. Barber also said that former director Dr. John Lewis used to lead Messiah with an orchestra made up

Pianist Margaret Nelson will play the harpsichord continuo while accompanying the Parksville & District Community Choir in their rendition of Handel’s Messiah.

of musicians from the mid-Island. In more recent years, however, that accompaniment has narrowed to a handful of musicians, including Bryn Badel who will again join the choir this year on piccolo trumpet. The choir’s regular pianist Margaret Nelson will also be there, only this year she’ll be playing the harpsichord continuo. “It’s not a real harpsichord,” she admitted, revealing that she’ll be playing on an electronic version for the concert. However, Nelson isn’t too upset about using the non-traditional instrument. She said that the keys on a real harpsichord distinctively drop when struck — the keys move a feather plectrum to pluck a string inside the instrument— and she hasn’t trained her fingers to play like that. Instead, the pianist will be in

familiar territory with the electronic instrument which she describes as much more touch sensitive, like the keys on a piano. Still, Nelson said the electronic harpsichord has that plucky sound of it’s traditional counterpart. “If you’re hearing the clicky sound, it’s the harpsichord,” she said. Along with playing a new instrument, Nelson’s part in this year’s Messiah will be a far different experience from the last one she played in 2009. That year she said she played “the entire orchestra” on her piano, but this year she’ll be “much more in the background.” The Parksville & District Community Choir will also have some vocal accompaniment this year. The 55 voice choir will be joined by returning guest soloists Andrea Sicotte Rodall from Duncan and John Doughty from Victoria, as well as first-time soloists Kristy Gislason and Stephen Barradell from Victoria. According to a news release, all of the soloists have impressive vocal training and have performed with orchestras, opera, choirs and ensembles. “It’s difficult music. You need really good soloists,” said Larson. The audience will also be invited to sing along on some familiar choruses. Some scores will be available for those who wish to sing, but supply is limited. Handel’s Messiah will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2:30 p.m. Advance tickets are available at Mulberry Bush Bookstores in Parksville and Qualicum for $20. Any leftover tickets will be sold at the door for $22. For more information, call 250-752-8130.

MAKING MUSIC: Back row, from left, Chaney Vigneault, Dylan Vigneault, Michael Meszaros and front row, from left, Alexina Jokuti, Keenan Bevan, Maxine Creery and Zac Vigneault are part of the Youth Engagement Program’s music group in Errington. “It’s fun,” said group leader Susanne Vigneault of the free, no-commitment program. “It’s an opportunity to get out and play with other people.” Susanne said the music group could use some more youth aged 11-18 to join them on Thursdays from 7-8 p.m. at the Errington Hall. Anyone who is “able to play basic chords” or wants to sing is welcome, she said.

Harps and art at the MAC The McMillan Arts Centre (the MAC) is playing host to an afternoon fundraising event for The Oceanside Community Arts Council on Dec. 17 and you’re invited. Patt Scrivener’s Christmas from the Harp concert is the main attraction of the day, and there will also be some complimentary Christmas refreshments. The MAC’s galleries will also be open for visitors to browse their Winter Wonderland exhibit. This features artistic inspirations of winter by more than 30 members of the OCAC. There are painters, photographers and potters on display. Work by stained-glass artist Robert Lineham will be there as well, and can be found in the windows of the Oceanside Gallery. According to a news release from the MAC, Lineham

is self-taught and has been doing glass work for thirty years. He has recently done a series of Celtic Knots and finds working with glass to be satisfying and challenging at the same time. “I like to design windows with enough colour to be visually attractive both in the day and backlit from an outside window, while still being visually pleasing when viewed at night from the inside,” he said. The fundraising event will be Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 1:30–3:30 p.m. and admission is by $5 minimum donation at the door. The Winter Wonderland exhibit will continue until Dec. 21. KSS boys basketball win home opener Kondors beat 49ers 78-49 with home court advantage Tuesday night in Qualicum Beach T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com

The Kwalikum Secondary Kondors came out flying for their home opener as the senior boys basketball team took on the Ladysmith 49ers Tuesday night. Jesse Goring, Grade 12, led the way in scoring for the Kondors with 19 points as they cruised to a 78-49 win over the 49ers. Ryan Becker, Grade 12, chipped in with 18 points while Lucas Sposato, Grade 11, had 16 points to boot. “I thought we played a lot of good, high tempo basketball,” head coach Butch Gayton said. “We were aggressive on defense and created a lot of turnovers. That can be demoralizing to a team, especially one like Ladysmith that didn’t quite have the amount of players on the bench I think they would have liked.” Holding a 39-24 lead at the half, the Kondors busted the game open in the second, outscoring the 49ers 39-25 again. Sposato scored 10 of his 16 points in the game during the second half, leading the way for KSS in the final two quarters.

“We’ve got a couple of kinks to work out,” Gayton said. “I thought we executed well enough tonight and put a lot of good pressure on their team to cause some turnovers to get transition baskets. If we can hammer out the offensive side of things, we should start to see a well rounded game for ourselves.” Coming off a big come-frombehind win over the AAA Alberni Armada, the Kondors beat the 49ers in their first home game of the season and move to 1–0 in league play on the season. “I think that we really set the tone early on,” Gayton said. “Our three headed monster of Goring, Becker and Shane Craven, those three guys can really cause a lot of problems for other teams with their speed and quick hands on defense.” “They created the majority of turnovers on defense and turned them in to fast break layups for us.” That trio of guards will be the focal point of a quick and aggressive KSS defense this season. The Kondors have a bit of size in the paint with Grade 11’s Sposa-

to and Connor Haywood, to go along with Grade 12 Wylder Carson-Austin. “We aren’t going to be the biggest team on the floor every game,” Gayton said. “We’ve got some big guys but our bread and butter is with our quickness.” “Our big guys can get up and down the floor too, so when we create scoring chances off defensive turnovers, we put ourselves in an excellent position to win games.” The senior boys will now travel to Courtenay this weekend for a tournament at Mark Isfeld Secondary, where they will take on the Ladysmith 49ers once again in their opening game of the tournament. “We’re starting to pass the ball more as a team,” Gayton said. “Our guards are starting to see the floor better on offense and even our big men are getting in there, passing the ball well within the offense. We’re making good strides and it’s early in the season, so that’s always nice to see. As the season goes along, we’re hoping to keep getting better each week.”

VIJHL HOCKEY

Gens hope to get over injuries and changes T YSON TAYLOR

sports@pqbnews.com

With the off-ice distractions seemingly behind them, the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals will look to right the ship on the ice this week. They will be in Victoria, taking on the Victoria Cougars tonight and a familiar face in PJ Heger. Heger was recently traded from the Gens to the Cougars for future considerations. The move saw the Gens lose their leading scorer, as Heger had 13 goals and 10 assists. “It’s tough, there’s no doubt about it,” Heger said after the trade. “I made a lot of

good friends and really enjoyed coming to Parksville. It’s a beautiful place and I’m going to miss it. But this is a good chance for me to continue to improve as a hockey player with the trade to the Cougars and I’m excited about the new opportunity that’s in front of me.” There was a flurry of action off the ice with the departure of president Sylvain Giroux and general manager Lou Gavel. Rob Gaudreault, who takes over as head coach and general manager, still has a bit of room left to make some deals. “We’ll see what happens,” Gaudreault said. “We don’t have many cards left to

bring guys in but we’ve got a few to use. It’s a different situation than being the assistant coach but I’m up to the challenge of trying to make this team better and give these kids the best chance to go out there each night and have some fun while trying to win some hockey games.” This week the Gens are dealing with a smaller roster and injuries. A pair of defenseman are on the shelf as Chandler Bruyckere is dealing with a shoulder injury and David Biagioni is dealing with an upper-body injury. Forward and Parksville’s own Jarrett Weme is getting over a shoulder injury of his own and should be

back to 100 per cent hopefully this week. “It’s been a bit of a struggle with this injury, for sure,” Weme said. “Just when it feels like I’m ready to get back out there, it sort of comes back and bothers me. It’s at the point now where it’s nowhere near as painful but when I get bumped; it’s just like a little brother punching you in the arm constantly. I’m close though, shouldn’t be too much longer.” On the road Thursday, the Generals are still looking to beat the Comox Valley Glacier Kings for the first time this season. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. See PHOTO, page A37

SCHOONER COVE YACHT CLUB

Schooner Cove sailing T YSON TAYLOR

sports@pqbnews.com

It was cold and clear with a very light breeze as skippers and crews of the Schooner Cove racing fleet tested their skills in race six of the Fall Colours Series. A short six-mile course was selected because of the light air and all six vessels stayed close to the line during the pre-start sequence. It was a down wind start with Shingebiss being the first boat to deploy a spinnaker even before the start signal. As the fleet crossed the start line for the first leg of two miles, more sails went up to get maximum advantage of what little wind there was.

As each boat rounded the down wind mark, spinnakers came down and head sails went up to begin a painfully slow two mile leg followed by one mile cross wind. One final crosswind leg took the fleet to the finish line. The seventh and last race of the series is scheduled for December 14.
