It was a coming together of cultures in late November on the Castlegar Campus as Selkirk College hosted its annual Intercultural Fair. Hundreds of students, staff and special guests gathered in The Pit on November 20 to take in the sights, sounds, tastes and trivia of the many different cultures represented at Selkirk College. Put on by Selkirk International, the two hour lunchtime event featured food from around the world, colourful dance, demonstrations and interactive games. “A day like this is important because we get an opportunity to meet the other students and find out more about their culture,” said Gurpreet Kaur, a student from India who is taking the

advanced diploma in Nursing Gerontology. “It’s also important to show the Canadian students our culture, it’s helpful for others to see what kind food we eat and what kind of dress we have.” Kaur arrived to Castlegar in March to start the twoyear program. “I was planning for an education in Canada and I searched it on Google,” she said. “ I found Selkirk College and saw that they were starting this program for the first time. It looked like a nice program and a nice place. I am a nurse graduate in India and have already worked one year in a clinical setting, so this is my postgraduation study. My main focus is to get an international education.” One of the highlights of

the afternoon was a colourful and energetic dance performance by 20-year-old Japanese student Yu Matsuoka. “The dance is called Yosakoi,” said Matsuoka, who is in taking the English as a Secondary Language Program. “I started dancing one and a half years ago. I’m very happy to preform it today because I wanted to spread my dance because it is an important part of Japanese culture.” Matsuoka has been taking in as much Canadian culture as possible over the last three months and said it was nice to share a little of her culture and explore others at the same time. “It’s important because I don’t have class with Indian students,” she said. “Today

I had an opportunity to see the Indian culture. It’s also important to talk to the many Canadian students too.” Both students agreed that Selkirk College has been a great place to learn and get a better understanding of Canada. “It’s a very nice place,” said Kaur. “I have many friends in Saskatchewan and Ontario who are doing the same thing and they tell me about problems they face. We face nothing here, it’s a blessing to be part of Selkirk College. NaNoWriMo novelists tackle ‘now what?’ revision event National Novel Writing Month ended November 30 but this year was the best ever for Kootenay writers, according to the event’s coordinators. “It really was a region-wide event,” says Karina Cram, comunicipal liaison. “We had 16 first-timers from places like Sparwood and Golden. A half dozen regulars showed up at the Nelson library write-ins. And weekly draw prizes went to writers in Revelstoke and Kimberly.” But the fun isn’t over. NaNoWriMo’s Now What? revision event starts in January and features webinars, chats

on Twitter and blog posts aimed at helping November novelists through the initial editing process. “November was great to get my story on the page,” says participant Jasmine Georget. “In January and February I’m looking forward to ripping my story apart, altering it and stitching it back together into something even better!” To help participants, Hall Printing in Nelson and Trail is offering NaNo writers discounted printing before January 31. “It’s wonderful news,” says Deb O’Keeffe, co-municipal liaison. “A lot of Wrimos

needed somewhere to print off those two hundred page NaNo manuscripts!” Anyone who missed NaNoWriMo can sign up for April’s Camp Wrimo at campnanowrimo.org. Beginning April 1, this creative retreat is a less vigorous version of November’s event in which writers set their own word count goals and work on any writing project they wish, including plays, scripts or manuscript revisions. Students across the West Kootenay boundary are asked to put on their creative thinking caps and join a one-of-akind junior business competition. The Junior Dragons Den is launching for a second year through Community Futures of Greater Trail and again includes a Grade 8-10 category and a Grade 11-12 senior group. This year, the witand-brain challenge has opened up to include college, university and trades school students who might have a trick or two up their sleeves. “There is really no limit for what can be submitted, and can include absolutely everything from hair extensions to cell phone apps,” said John Reed, entrepreneurial services coordinator for Community Futures. “It’s super fun and we are looking for people to come out and view the show,” he added. “It’s live electronic voting so when you vote for your favourite, that accounts

for 20 per cent of the mark the junior dragons will get for their presentation.” The Feb. 28 deadline for entries is coming up fast for the big night, which is slated for May 1 in downtown Trail’s Charles Bailey Theatre. There’s already a business education class at J.L. Crowe Secondary burrowing down to come up with ideas that range from low tech innovations to more complex and high-tech notions. “Right now we are in the concept stage and students are sharing their ideas in class,” explained Grade 10 teacher Deborah Dovgala. “Other students are allowed to share their concerns about an idea but no one is allowed to be a ‘dream buster.’ It is a true Inquiry Project (collaborative research).” The students are excited about sharing their thoughts, she continued, and have been coming up with ways to improve the concepts of their peers. “It is super fun,”

Verdict Hyundai has done it again, delivering a very attractive car, full of features, at an attractive price. 2.4L models range from $23,999 to $32,999 in the top Limited trim. This model has most of the features found in the top 2.0L turbo but without the added power. The base 2.0L turbo starts at $30,999 and the top Ultimate model, seen here, is $34,799. Both the Limited and Ultimate get the forward collision warning system and lane departure safety features, plus they also get adaptive cruise control. For 2015, the Sonata is a big step foreword in design. The added safety features will be attractive and the constant pushing-of-the-envelope from Hyundai is welcome. Drive Both the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and the 2.0L turbo have been carried over from the last model but they have been modified to produce better torque delivery and fuel economy. Hyundai has dropped the horsepower output from 198hp to 185hp in the 2.4L and limited the torque to 178hp. The 2.0L turbo also receives a horsepower drop from 274hp to 245hp and the torque drops from 268 lb.-ft to 160 lb.-ft. Hyundai claims that the torque is lower in the RPM range and the fuel consumption is improved. The experience behind the wheel of the turbo is still very invigorating but not as hectic as the last model, it delivers a more usable driving experience. Power is smooth and refined; the turbo feels like a V6 without the accompanying fuel bill.

Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada. Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts. In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager. Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

The U.S. and Canada might get a wide variety of unique and exotic cars, but there are a few cars that never made it to our showrooms and appear now only has special imports. 1972 Lancia Stratos HF – The Lancia Stratos HF is a monster of car. In the concept stages, the Stratos was an attempt by Bertone to get its foot in with Lancia, who had previously worked with Pinin Farina for design. The legend states that Bertone re-bodied a Lancia Fulvia and drove it

to Lancia’s headquarters. Impressed with the Stratos prototype, Lancia agreed to collaborate with Bertone to create their next generation rally car. The Stratos was built around a Lancia chassis, with a Ferrari Dino engine positioned behind the seats. The rolling chassis was finished off with an aerodynamic body fitted by Bertone. The Lancia would go on to have a legendary career, winning the World Rally Championship from 1974-1976. 1973 Chevrolet Firenza Can Am – American automotive manufacturers have made

a number of performance cars exclusively for Europe and Australia, but have you ever heard of an African performance car? Meet the Chevrolet Firenza Can Am, a Euro-American mash-up that was never sold in either of those markets. Built to compete with Ford’s inferior Capri Perana, the Can Am began its existence in Britain as a Vauxhall Firenza frame, which was then shipped straight south to Port Elizabeth, where it was paired with a power train straight out of an American legend — the 1969 Camaro Z/28. With a lightweight

body and nearly 300 horsepower, the smell of burning rubber was a no-cost option, and I’m sure there was plenty of that. The car was limited to a run of 100, which were built to satisfy homologation requirements for Argus Production Car series, 30 of which are still known to exist. 1969 Ford Escort RS1600 – While the latter part of the 1960s might have been the middle of the Mustang’s heyday, Ford was busy building fast cars all around the world. One of those cars was Ford’s venerable Escort, which was one of the

top selling cars in Europe at the time. Of course, Ford engineers weren’t satisfied with a compact coupe with 1.3-litre engine, so they contacted the blokes

over at Cosworth and developed the Escort RS1600. While the Cosworth engine may have put out only 113 horsepower, the tiny Escort was barely tipping the

scales at 1,800 pounds, making the RS1600 one of the coolest cars cruising the UK at the time.

1969 Nissan Skyline GT-R – The Nissan Skyline GT-R is arguably the most iconic sports car to ever come from the islands of Japan. While the GT-R is most commonly idolized in its mid-’90s guise from the Fast & Furious franchise, our pick is the original — the 1969 Skyline GT-R. Introduced at the 1969 Tokyo Auto Show, the GT-R was a Nissan Skyline sedan that was stripped out and given the special treatment by the boys in the Nissan Skunks Works team. The heart of the GT-R is a Nissan racing V-6 engine putting out 160 horsepower, allowing the GT-R to outrun its Eu-

ropean rivals. Other cool upgrades included wide wheel arches, rally wheels, front and rear spoilers, and of course, the now-iconic GT-R badges. 1986 Porsche 959 – The Porsche 959 is a perfect example of what happens when some German mad scientists in Porsche decide that the 911 Turbo isn’t just quite enough. Built to be the ultimate Group B rally car, Porsche decided to slap an all-wheel drive system and a twin-turbo 2.8-liter boxer engine in a highly modified 911. In order to fulfill the FIA’s homologation rule, Porsche built 337 examples for consumption by the public. Of course, the EPA and Porsche weren’t quite on the same page, and the 959 was never legally sold in the U.S. However, several example of the 959 have made their ways to our shores, most notably the “Gates 959,” which was stored by U.S. Customs for 13 years and was key in the passing of the “Show and Display” law.

Peeking through the long lens of Driving Television

Driving Television is a slickly produced, fast-paced car show, designed to help regular folks make a sound decision when making the second biggest purchase of their lives – buying a car. When Driveway’s lead test driver Zack Spencer is not writing for you here, he’s in front of the camera co-hosting the top-rated, independently produced, Canadian show with Lacey Elliott. You won’t find me in front of the lens, having looks suited only for print, but recently I spent a day behind the DTV camera, observing Zack and videographer Brian Chow. The action took place in Whistler for the launch of the 2015 Lexus NX. First up was a presentation about the product, and specifically the technology featured in the compact crossover vehicle. While some journos present yawned occasionally and jotted a few notes, Zack wrote feverishly, asking many questions. “They sometimes last an

hour or longer but these presentations are extremely important to my day’s work,” advises Zack. “The print guys can take the thumb drive with all the info on it and check it at their leisure later. But I need to leave the room with all the facts and have my questions ready to go.” Minutes later, he’s conducting an interview with Lexus Canada Director Cyril Dimitris, about the importance of this new entry to the fastest growing market segment. The print and online writers have already left for a day on the scenic back roads and a jaunt along the Sea to Sky Highway. We’re striking out on our own. “We do up to 30 launches a year and some manufacturers want people to drive up to 400 kilometres. I always say we are either driving or shooting but we’re not doing both so most manufacturers are happy to let us do our own thing.” Just 15 minutes later, Zack is up Whistler Mountain, doing a standup shot talk-

ing knowledgeably to the camera about the NX. Yes, he really was taking notes while many of the rest of us were nodding or slurping the coffee at the Four Seasons Resort. A steep mountain road outside Pemberton was the perfect spot to show off the car in a beautiful location. Well, it was in the breaks between heavy logging trucks passing by. The next couple of hours were spent driving up and down the road to capture in car commentary from Zack. “When we first started (12 years ago) we had to shoot with large TV cameras from the roadside for externals or stuff a camera into the dash to get my remarks while driving,” explains Zack. But new technology has changed all that. Brian shoots with what looks like a regular digital still camera. “The old TV cameras would cost about $100,000 but you can now get great DSLR cameras, designed for video, for around $10,000.”

The rain and windstorms have started and it won’t be long before the temperatures start to dip. Northern BC and the Interior have already experienced the cold. At the coast, it seems every year the first snowfall creates chaos and adjusting to the conditions is a big challenge for many people. That said; driving in the winter season generally presents

more problems than driving in other seasons wherever you call home. The vehicle and the driver must be prepared as well as possible to cope with these kinds of driving conditions. In winter driving, braking and stopping the vehicle, of course, cause the most difficult moments. The tires play a critical role in stopping the vehicle, and they need even more care and attention than in the other seasons.

Most SUVs have a passenger car tire classification with M+S stamped on the sidewall, for Mud and Snow and are considered allseason tires. If it is not, your vehicle must be fitted with tires suitable for any type of climate, even the most severe ones. In winter the pressure of the tire must also be controlled more frequently. This is because a reduction of the outside temperature

causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, accelerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a value around 1-2 PSI for each 5° C decrease in temperature. Contrary to popular opinion, a lower inflation pressure than normal does not improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more liable to damage.

Always remember that in any season and with any temperature, insufficient pressure is always the main cause of tire damage. Here is some advice to always bear in mind it is during winter driving conditions: Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions.

Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the pavement. Do not use the cruise control in winter conditions. Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your brakes to deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Don’t get overconfi-

dent in your 4x4 vehicle. Remember that your fourwheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive vehicle.

versation about these float pods so I bought two sessions and brought along a friend to enjoy it with me. Without going into too many details on the experience, I floated for 90 minutes in my private room. Note: do not rub your eyes! When it was all over, I was very relaxed. I am so glad the V60 T6 R-Design was the chariot home because I wanted the feeling of serenity to last as long as possible. The V60 certainly facilitated this state of being. Driving the 2015 V60 wagon can be likened to a floatation tank experience: but don’t close your eyes and turn off the lights to enjoy the tranquility! It glides effortlessly and handles brilliantly in whatever environment I put it in. Thanks to the R-Design Sport chassis, which has been lowered 15 mm, and spring stiffness is 15 per cent higher compared with the Dynamic chassis in the standard V60. That said, it’s stiff in all the right places. The dynamic handling on the sinuous roads made me realize just how much I missed driving the Swedish brand’s vehicles. The smooth-revving 3.0L, turbocharged I-6 engine also helps sweeten the deal. With 325 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque being produced (with Polestar Performance software tuning), it’s no sleeper. It’s then linked with a sixspeed Geartronic automatic transmission with advanced Quick Shift, and a Sport Mode Haldex electronically controlled all-wheel-drive with Instant Traction. I was hoping for some snow on the ground so I could play in it a little, but alas, my request was not

Pick of the Week: Volvo Cars’ safety expert Anders Axelson knows that brilliant ideas can pop up in the strangest of circumstances. A visit to Legoland with his twin daughters in 2007 inspired Anders to turn an amusement park ride into an efficient test method in Volvo Cars’ quest for better protection in run-off road crashes. “Watching people being thrown in all directions during a ride in the ‘Robocoaster’, I suddenly realised that those rapid, random movements resembled the violent forces occupants in a run-off road crash are exposed

to,” says Anders Axelson. “The industrial robot manufacturer ABB had the technology and the knowledge to programme a machine designed for precision work to move a car seat around in a seemingly random pattern. It worked brilliantly,” says Anders Axelson. A vehicle seat and restraint system is mounted on the multi-axial industrial robot.
