Canada Post mail carrier, Kevin Durham, makes deliveries on Tupper Street on Thursday morning. Canada Post says home deliver will be discontinued in Chilliwack in the new year. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS
Canada Post sets end date for home delivery Jennifer Feinberg The Progress Chilliwack’s door-to-door mail delivery service is limping to the finish line. Canada Post notified its staff in Chilliwack this week that more than 12,000 addresses with home delivery will get switched over to community mailboxes by the fall of 2015. The Posties are none too happy and urge Canadians to make their views known. Peter Butcher, president of the Upper Valley local of Canadian Union of Postal Workers, was told Wednesday as he was sorting mail for his rural route. At least eight delivery routes will be lost, but no staff layoffs are expected.
“We’re still fighting this,” Butcher said. “We’d like to see door-to-door service remain intact.” They knew the switchover was coming. The news was announced a year ago, and most of Sardis and townhome complexes use CMs. But they did not know it would be so quick. “But I have no idea why Chilliwack was picked to end delivery next year, which is only the second year in a five-year process.” There is massive opposition to the delivery eradication across the country, Butcher noted, and citizens should let their MP and Canada Post know how they feel. Canada Post is embarking on a consultation process through the mail. They brown envelopes
containing the surveys requesting feedback. “This morning, we informed employees at our Chilliwack LCD Main depot that home addresses in the area — postal codes starting with V2P — will be converting from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in Fall 2015,” said Canada Post spokesperson Daria Hill in an email. The changes are coming as part of the Five-point Action Plan by the Crown corporation, but will not affect apartment dwellers who get their mail in the lobby. Info packages with a mail-in survey are arriving soon to allow people to express “their priorities and preferences” about the new delivery method of their mail, said Hill.
But some citizens are “angry and upset” by all the problems it will cause, Butcher added citing: theft, snow removal, frozen locks, to poor lighting and safety, downloading of costs onto municipalities. There are “serious implications” for seniors and those with mobility challenges who have specifically chosen to live where they live so they can get home mail delivery. Almost 400 groups and municipalities have passed resolutions or raised concerns about the cuts, especially the end of home mail delivery, he said. But Canada Post reps said they will work with city planning departments to pick “suitable locations” for the new mailboxes. Continued: MAIL/ p5

“Mommy, all I want for Christmas is to have our snowman back.” A thief with sticky fingers has done a number on a Chilliwack family’s Christmas spirit after their beloved decorative snowman was stolen from outside their front door. Katrina Eng is putting a message out to her community to see if anyone has seen their five-foot-tall Frosty. “We would love to get him back.” The snowman is brown, she said, which makes him unique, and covered in wicker vines, almost antique-style, with little white lights, a waving mechanical arm and a springy orange nose. It’s put a damper on their Christmas spirit, she admits. Someone took off with “Frosty” as they called him, brazenly coming to the back of their townhouse complex to do it. “I came home from work and it was gone,” Eng said. It was a big blow to their Christmas spirit. “They had to unplug it first. It’s pretty big and cumbersome, so they would have needed a truck. You couldn’t carry it down the street.” It was in three pieces that were ziptied together. The snowman had a motor inside to run the mechanical arm that waves. She made a police report, but there’s been no sign of the snowman they’ve had for five years since picking it up for halfprice at a Boxing Day dale. “It was the kids who picked it out.” The Engs had just served a massive Christmas dinner for 400 people at Evans elementary the day before the theft. They cooked 31 turkeys for the students, teachers, parents and special guests. And then this happened. “It felt so good and I was starting to get in an awesome Christmas mood,” Eng said. “And then the Grinch stole it. Our kids just want the snowman back.”

B.C. urged to end ‘shadow system’ of substandard foster care Jeff Nagel Black Press B.C.’s Representative for Children and Youth has issued yet another stinging rebuke to the province for allowing substandard conditions in 31 cases where youths in care ended up critically harmed or dead. Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond latest review of children in care focuses on those with complex medical, psychological or behavioural needs and paints a tragic portrait of a system she says is “in disarray” because of government’s failure to fund an adequate model. “We’re compounding their challenges by isolating them and giv-
ing them this kind of substandard treatment,” she told reporters Wednesday. One youth dubbed Dean came from a violent, unstable family and mentally ill mother who considered killing him, according to the new report. He was diagnosed with various behavioural disorders and hospitalized for self-harm before entering government care and being placed in a foster home at age 15. The foster father didn’t want his own kids exposed to Dean so the youth was kept in a separate rental home that the dad staffed with workers he met through Narcotics Anonymous or the local coffee shop, with no criminal record
checks conducted. One night worker turned out to be a sex offender who abused the boy, Turpel-Lafond said, calling it an example of a “shadow system of care” where kids who need the most attention are cast aside. “When we put the neediest kids in these ad hoc group homes that are one-offs where someone can hire someone from the Starbucks lineup or from their Narcotics Anonymous group to care for a child, that’s not good care.” It’s particularly troubling the province knew of that care plan and agreed to it, Turpel-Lafond added. Of the cases reviewed, seven children were sexually assaulted, eight were physically assaulted,
while others were suicidal, had drug overdoses or self-inflicted injuries. Two died. She noted the Ministry of Children and Family Development continues to use hotels in all regions of the province to house some children in care who have not been placed elsewhere. “You basically go to sleep in a hotel with one worker and wake up with another worker,” said TurpelLafond, who wants the province to disclose each time hotels are used. “Sometimes the kids sleep overnight in the after hours office [of the ministry], which isn’t even as good as a hotel – they’re sleeping in an office.” Her chief recommendation is the
province stop putting children with complex needs in inappropriate placements and that new residential services be created that aim for a loving family-style environment, not institutionalization. Letting at-risk kids drift toward poverty, homelessness, jail, abuse and untreated mental illness is much more costly than a comprehensive, fully funded and properly supported residential care system, she said. She’s also urging a hybrid approach of shared guardianship that lets parents and other family continue to participate in the upbringing of a child who must be in government care. Cat calendars help support Ena’s Community Cats
Close the door on potential scam, say RCMP
Jenna Hauck The Progress Nietzsche is once again owning the spotlight. The famous celebrity cat who “works” at The Book Man is gracing the pages of the fourth annual Chilliwack Cats for Charity calendar along with nine other felines. This year, he’s Mr. March and Mr. December. He’s also featured on the front of the calendar, plus his furry ginger-coloured face will keep you smiling into January 2016 with the calendar’s added bonus month. The annual fundraiser put on by The Book Man brings in about $2,500 to $3,000 every year to help cats in need. This year, funds will go towards Ena’s Community Cats, run by local cat lover Ena Vermerris. Formerly with Chilliwack Animal Safe Haven, Vermerris now runs her own charity where people who cannot afford to take their cat to the vet can get help with spaying, neutering, deworming, flea and mite problems, and small injuries — all at cost. “It’s an incredible help, and it allows me to help people with a very low income, or those who are disabled,” says Vermerris of the fundraiser. “I cut down the price of the spay and neuter so that it gets done.” Along with Nietzsche, the other working cats featured in the calendar include Martin from Video Tonite, Alex from Ann Davis Transition Society, Bailey and Ninja from Kim Mallory Studios, Daisy from Little Mountain Greenhouses, Jax from Sarah Sovereign Photography, Mr. Bibs from Minter County Garden,

Frisky from Country West Supply, and Gatsby from the Abbotsford Book Man store. Chilliwack photographers Ian Meissner, Sarah Sovereign, Leah Riley, Kim Mallory, and Nicole Kornelson, and Vancouver photographer Todd Holbrook took the images for the 2015 calendar. The Book Man partnered with Marcom Signs and Graphics which printed the calendars at a discounted rate. Amber Short, co-owner and manager at The Book Man, organizes the calendar every year. She’s currently distributing them to some
of the many local businesses where they’ll be available for purchase. The calendars have even been sent overseas. “They are going everywhere,” says Short. “I just mailed three to Europe — one to England and two to the Netherlands.” The 2015 calendars cost $16.95 each, and all proceeds will go towards Ena’s Community Cats. “I can’t thank Amber enough for what she’s doing,” says Vermerris. “I am very blessed to have this support.” “It makes me happy,” says Short.
PRE CHRISTMAS SALE!
“Makes her happy?” says Vermerris. “It makes me extremely happy.” The 2015 Chilliwack Cats for Charity calendars are available at The Book Man (Chilliwack and Abbotsford), The Scruffy Tail Pet Food & Supplies, Raining Cats and Dogs, Animal House, Oly’s Pet Connection, Minter Countr y Garden, Little Mountain Greenhouses, and Video Tonite. Also available at The Book Man are cloth bags featuring two art illustrations of Nietzsche. Proceeds from the bags also go to Ena’s Community Cats.
“Individually it’s hard to see how you can make a difference, but collectively it happens and I can see it,” says Vermerris. “It gives me an incredible amount of pleasure to do this.” If people want to suggest other working cats for the 2016 calendar, they can contact Amber Short at The Book Man at 604-792-4595. People struggling financially and who help with care or treatment for their cats can call Ena Vermerris at 604-858-9045, or 604-8192727. photo@theprogress.com twitter.com/PhotoJennalism
It may be the season for generosity, but Chilliwack RCMP are reminding residents to still be careful, especially when asked for money at your door or over the phone. Local RCMP have received at least two reports during the last week of a male showing up at a residence and asking for money. In these instances, the male reported that he needs a ride to the hospital and money to pay for various things, including the ambulance or to get a vehicle out of impound. “It seems this person is using people’s good nature to get money for them and is using this as an opportunity to steal other items,” said Cst. Ashley St. Germaine. The suspect was described as Caucasian, approximately 25 years old, dark curly hair, approximately 5’9” and of slim build. She recommended the following steps to protect residents from a potential scam: • If you don’t feel comfortable opening the door for someone, at any time of day, don’t • If someone shows up at your house and won’t leave phone the police Continued: SCAM/ p9

City officials have always worked with Canada Post in this way, as they already have Community Mailboxes in place in Sardis and Vedder Crossing, with a mix of CMs and endof-driveway private mail boxes. They have not had any inquiries from the public on the subject, staff said. Canada Post reps specified that “no regular full-time or part-time employee” will lose their job as a result. “As we have stated throughout this process, we will reduce our workforce largely through attrition as people leave the company,” said Hill. Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Mark Strahl has pledged to help constituents if possible. “My office stands ready to assist anyone with mobility issues should the need arise,” he said. But the MP also reminded people that Canada Post has “a mandate to operate on a self-sustaining financial basis” and to not be a burden on Canadian taxpayers. “Canada Post has an obligation to align its business with the realities of the digital age in order to protect Canadian taxpayers,” Strahl noted, adding that Canadians are changing the way they communicate and do business, with letter mail in dramatic decline. “About two-thirds of Chilliwack residents already receive their mail in a community mail box, apartment lobby lock box, post office box or at the end of their driveway on rural routes,” he wrote in an email to The Progress. “These customers will not be affected at all by Canada Post’s delivery changes.” As Canada Post
transitions from home delivery to secure community mail box delivery, the corporation has committed to working with people with mobility issues to meet their needs. It’s all because of the numbers. Canada Post has seen letter mail volumes plummet, with 1.2 billion fewer pieces of mail delivered in 2013, compared to 2006. The plan: http://www.canadapost.ca/cpo/mc/ assets/pdf/aboutus/5_ en.pdf

TIMELINE from page 3 Minister of Children and Family Development Stephanie Cadieux issued a statement saying the review doesn’t reflect her ministry’s latest improvements, including the new sixbed Maples Adolescent Treatment Centre in Burnaby. Cadieux called Turpel-Lafond’s proposed three-month timeline for action “unrealistic” because the ministry is tackling other priorities, including the hiring of 200 more front-line child protection staff.

Turpel-Lafond said the government has had adequate time to act – it’s been nearly two years since she issued similar recommendations after an 11-year-old boy with complex needs was tasered by police. “I’m certainly not happy that I continue to see children in this state,” she said. “They need to get on this.” Of B.C.’s nearly 9,000 children and teens in care, 1,300 have complex needs and nearly 900 of them are in contracted placements that often have inadequate oversight.

In April, Bolko faced further charges of possession of stolen property, possession of a firearm, possession of a break-in instrument and breaching his probation. These charges were related to Bolko possessing a stolen Ford F-350 in Chilliwack. The following month, he was sentenced to 81 days in jail, followed by 18 months of probation and a lifetime weapons ban. Bolko has more than 15 criminal charges dating back to 2001, mainly in Chilliwack.

R AESIDE
It’s a familiar refrain this time of year. No, not the holiday wishes. Rather, the plea to motorists and pedestrians to take special care while they’re on the streets. This week two pedestrians died in separate incidents in the Lower Mainland. They join a stark and growing statistic: Every December in B.C., an average of seven pedestrians are killed and another 269 are injured. The dark rainy weather, slippery streets and poor visibility all conspire to make driving more difficult. There’s little we can do about that. But what we can do is make the extra effort to see and be seen. ICBC has a few suggestions. They’re made every year, but they’re worth repeating. To motorists, remain attentive at all times. Not only is it illegal to use a handheld device while driving, the consequences can be deadly. Pay particular attention around intersections where 75 per cent of all pedestrian incidents occur. Watch while turning left or right for pedestrians who have already begun to cross. And remember that the rain makes the roads more slick. So build in a bit more braking time. For pedestrians, never assume that just because you see the vehicles, their drivers see you. Headlights, traffic and other distractions compete with your visibility. Fight back by ensuring you are dressed to be seen; wear reflective clothing, a reflective arm band, or carry a light. Keep your eyes and ears open and focus on what’s happening around you. That means pulling out your headphones, or putting the phone away while crossing a busy street. But the most important point is to never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact and always err on the side of caution; the consequences of an accident are far graver for the pedestrian than for the driver. The holidays are a hectic time of year. We all have places to be and things to think about. But they’re also meant to be a happy time; don’t let an accident or injury spoil that. ~ Greg Knill, Chilliwack Progress
L OCALLY G LOBAL
Avian flu carries potential economic sting With the sudden outbreak of bird ‘flu, the poultry industry is understandably on edge. There are at least eight farms under quarantine between Chilliwack and Abbotsford because of the highly contagious, high-pathogenic H5N2 virus. This brings back nightmare memories of the 2004 outbreak of the high-path H7N3 which spread over 42 Fraser Valley farms and nearly a dozen backyard coups. Some 17 million chickens, turkeys and other domestic birds were slaughtered. The current outbreak is already having an economic sting especially with losses from the looming Christmas market. Some 155,000 birds have been or are being humanely slaughtered. When diseased animals are ordered slaughtered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) under the Health of Animals Act, compensation of loss
is provided to farmers. The CFIA undertook testing of infected birds at the National Centre for Foreign Animal Diseases and confirmed that the strain causing the current influenza outbreak is a highly-pathogenic H5N2 virus. According to CFIA, H5N2 is a subtype known to affect both Margaret wild and domesEVANS tic birds and the highly pathogenic strain causes severe illness and death, especially in poultry. The low-pathogenic strain of the virus causes less severe illness, lower egg production, and lower rates of mortality. It triggered outbreaks in B.C. in 2009 and Manitoba in 2010. Avian influenza viruses are divided by subtypes based on
two proteins found in the viruses. These are hemagglutinin, or “H” protein, and neuraminidase, or “N” protein. There are 16 H types and 9 N types which create a total 144 possible combinations. The CFIA stated on its website that the H5 and H7 subtypes of the virus are of particular concern, given their ability to mutate from low pathogenic to high pathogenic after they infect domestic birds. These two H-types have been known to cause serious disease or mortality in domestic poultry. Low pathogenic H5 and H7 viruses are quite common in wild waterfowl. To try to prevent further spread, the CFIA has set up a primary control zone bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the south by the United States border, on the north by Highway 16, and on the east by the border between British Columbia and Alberta. Basically it sweeps across all of southern B.C.

which has a high concentration of poultry operations. All movement of domestic birds in, out, and around this zone is strictly controlled and requires a CFIA permit. This includes not only birds but poultry products and by-products and any material that has been in contact with captive birds. Both the province and poultry producers fully support the CFIA’s decision and they are all working in cooperation. The poultry industry produces significant economic benefits for B.C. Including chicken and turkey producers, processors and satellite industries, the B.C. poultry industry generates about $2.4 billion in economic output contributing $712.4 million in GDP to BC’s economy. In 2011, there were 331 chicken farms in British Columbia producing about 154 million kilograms of meat and generating $351 million in farm cash receipts.
Chicken producers contribute an estimated $37.9 million to total municipal, provincial, and federal taxes. At least seven countries have imposed trade restrictions on B.C. poultry. Where the virus came from is still under investigation but wild birds, especially waterfowl, are natural reservoirs of influenza viruses. They may not be affected by the disease but they can transmit it to domestic birds. Once in the barn, the disease can spread extremely quickly and without comprehensive biosecurity measures it can be spread through contaminated manure, litter, clothing, footwear, vehicles, equipment, feed and water. Avian flu is not a risk to human food safety so long as all poultry is properly handled and cooked.

Leaving a legacy of clean energy There has been much talk lately on whether B.C. should forge ahead with the building of the Site C Dam. The NDP argue against it while other people say we should avail ourselves of green energy from independent power producers. Some say we need neither and I would disagree with them. In my opinion, doing nothing would be very shortsighted and would repeat a costly mistake made by the NDP government of the 1990s. Back then, the NDP government froze BC Hydro rates for purely political reasons and starved BC Hydro of the financial resources needed to expand and maintain the province’s aging hydro dams and keep electricity distribution and transmission systems in top working order. BC Hydro has more than $14 billion worth of infrastructure upgrade and renewal projects
that have either already been completed, are in progress or under consideration, including the $8 billion Site C dam project. These infrastructure renewal projects, including Site C, along with conservation efforts and acquiring renewably-sourced electricity from independent producers, are key to restoring B.C. to electricity self-sufficiency and allowing our province to regain its status as a net electricity exporter; something which has always been to the financial advantage of the province. However, we must also prepare for increased energy demands that go beyond Site C. For example, new mines and port expansions, and the likelihood of an emergent LNG industry, that will consume more electricity than our current and planned generating capacity. Repeating the NDP’s mistake of the 1990’s and postponing
investments in our province’s valuable but rapidly aging clean energy assets, including site C, is short sighted and not fair to future generations who will end up paying the price. We must move ahead with Site C as well as independent renewable energy projects so that we can meet the future needs of a growing province. Staying the course with the forward-thinking policy of electricity self-sufficiency will allow us to leave a legacy of clean energy for future generations at affordable hydro rates. Let’s not allow ourselves to fall into the same shortsighted trap the NDP did in the 1990s. The true cost of such a mistake is inestimable and it should not have to be borne by future generations due to negligence on our part. David Field, Co-spokesperson B.C. Citizens for Green Energy
Canada can do more on TB At the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Lima, Canada is a pariah. We are seen as a holdout and a failure, a problem that the rest of the world is forced to deal with. It’s a dark period for our international reputation. But that’s not the only story. While our climate record is indeed a failure, we still have much to be proud of
as a nation, especially when it comes to aid for the less fortunate. Especially for global sufferers of Tuberculosis. In 2010, while the world still reeled from the consequences of economic collapse, Canada launched TB Reach. The purpose of TB Reach is to improve tuberculosis detection, and it has been very successful, at times
doubling local case detection of the hardest to reach sufferers– those poorly serviced and living in remote populations. TB Reach has provided grants to 145 projects in 36 countries, and has helped save millions of lives. But the clock is running out on TB Reach. Although funding runs out this year, the federal government has been silent on the fate of our
internationally lauded fund. It is in danger of being abandoned, just when Canada needs to show that we are not just a disappointment to our global neighbours. Climate is a divisive and complex issue, but saving the lives of those suffering from TB is simple and cheap. More than ever Canada needs to fund TB Reach. Nathaniel Poole

Re: Tories take action on poverty: Strahl (Progress, Dec. 10). Just a quick comment regarding Mark Strahl’s recent letter. So typical of our politicians to glean the most favorable highlights. If one was to read the whole letter by Mr. Morley (Children are counting

on us, Progress, Dec. 3) you would see that those children between the medium income and the poverty line actually increased by two per cent. It would be so nice if Mr. Strahl would be more forthcoming with the facts. Terry Belyea

Verdict Hyundai has done it again, delivering a very attractive car, full of features, at an attractive price. 2.4L models range from $23,999 to $32,999 in the top Limited trim. This model has most of the features found in the top 2.0L turbo but without the added power. The base 2.0L turbo starts at $30,999 and the top Ultimate model, seen here, is $34,799. Both the Limited and Ultimate get the forward collision warning system and lane departure safety features, plus they also get adaptive cruise control. For 2015, the Sonata is a big step foreword in design. The added safety features will be attractive and the constant pushing-of-the-envelope from Hyundai is welcome.

quickly. With this in mind, Hyundai has backed away from the fluid approach to a more sculpted design that shares some styling cues from the top-of-range Hyundai Genesis. The front features a squarer grille opening, edgier bumper and front chin-spoiler. The base model is fitted with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has and 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels with LED daytime running lights, halogen headlamps or HID lights on the limited trim. The performance oriented 2.0 Turbo Sport model, seen above, comes with a two-toned front spoiler, 18-inch wheels, standard HID headlamps, quad exhaust tips and a lower diffuser on the rear bumper. The top trim levels of both the 2.4L and 2.0 Sport have a blacked-out section of the front grille which signifies the car comes with adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system.
The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 185hp or 2.0L Turbo with 245hp Fill-up: 9.8L/6.7L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $23.999-$34,799 zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca
Drive Both the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and the 2.0L turbo have been carried over from the last model but they have been modified to produce better torque delivery and fuel economy. Hyundai has dropped the horsepower output from 198hp to 185hp in the 2.4L and limited the torque to 178hp. The 2.0L turbo also receives a horsepower drop from 274hp to 245hp and the torque drops from 268 lb.-ft to 160 lb.-ft. Hyundai claims that the torque is lower in the RPM range and the fuel consumption is improved. The experience behind the wheel of the turbo is still very invigorating but not as hectic as the last model, it delivers a more usable driving experience. Power is smooth and refined; the turbo feels like a V6 without the accompanying fuel bill.

Import brands dominate Canadian Car of the Year Awards These category winners were chosen by 73 Canadian automotive journalists following a recently completed hands-on, five-day, back-to-back evaluation drive event, known as “TestFest”, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. New” category winners is the eventual 2015 Canadian Car of the Year and 2015 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year and these announcements will
be made at the Canadian International Auto Show, in Toronto, on February 12, 2015. In addition, AJAC will also present 2015 awards for Best New Technology
(January 15 / Montreal Auto Show) and Canadian Green Car of the Year (March 24 / Vancouver Auto Show). Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Subaru were
all double winners and, as usual, there were a few surprises. You can look at the voting and scoring details plus all the collected data on performance (accelera-
tion, braking, fuel economy, etc.) on the AJAC web site (ajac.ca). You can also look back on previous winners going all the way back to 1985, when the Volkswagen

Golf (an omen perhaps?) was a winner. A few weeks ago, I made some winner predictions for the seven categories that I managed to drive all entries, while at Testfest. Three proved to be right on the mark, two were runner-ups, but sadly, my Toyota Camry Hybrid and Chevrolet Tahoe choices were completely off target. The Acura RLX Hybrid was my most disappointing nonwinner, as I also considered it a good candidate for overall Canadian Car of the Year. The RLX is an amazing sophisticated automobile that could yet win a new technology award. There were just two entries in all-electric City Car category and the Kia Soul EV was a clear winner. I’ve heard both small car victors Honda Fit and VW Golf talked about as the potential overall winner. The double wins for Subaru and Hyundai were a bit of a surprise (to some) but it was certainly nice to see Porsche recognized for two outstanding products. While I didn’t expect the Volvo V60 Polestar to eclipse Ford Mustang GT, it was certainly good to see Volvo, a company with a great history that was teetered on the brink of extinction, back in the winner’s circle. All voting for Canadian Car of the Year is done by secret ballot and the esteemed accounting firm KPMG tabulated the results. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc. ca

Trial set for Chilliwack suspects in ‘boxed drug lab’ smuggling case Dan Ferguson Black Press A seven-day jury trial has been set for one of two Canadians charged with trying to bring a meth-lab-in-a-box across the Aldergrove border crossing. Calum James Buchanan, 40, is scheduled to stand trial Jan. 26. Buchanan and Lola Crystal McKay, 24, both from Chilliwack, were arrested at the Aldergrove border crossing on Sunday, Nov. 23 after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers discovered the chemicals in a 1994

The crossing was shut down in both directions for about an hour while a haz-mat team removed the chemicals. The two were supposed to appear before a Whatcom County Superior Court judge in Bellingham to set a date on Dec. 5, but McKay failed to show. Her court-appointed public defender said McKay may have had trouble crossing the bor-

der back into the U.S. following her release and return to Canada last month on a promise to appear. The judge has issued a warrant for McKay’s arrest. Court documents show Buchanan told investigators he was going to be paid $500 to deliver the lab to a third party in Canada while McKay denied any knowledge. If convicted of possession of meth chemicals with intent to manufacture, the pair could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years and a fine of up to $25,000 U.S.

Holiday gift ideas for the garden lover You may have already discovered this reality: when it comes to gardening gifts, passionate gardeners are very particular, so here are some suggestions that you might find helpful. There are so many great gardening books available today. It is well worth a browse in the gardening section of your favourite book store. Gardeners love quality books with great information and lots of coloured photographs. The Sunset Western Garden Book is probably one of the most useful. You might also
consider a gift subscription to one or more excellent gardening magazines, like Canadian Gardening, Fine Gardening, and my favourite, the RHS magazine called The Brian Garden. MINTER At the high end of gardening gifts, a greenhouse is a present to be enjoyed for many years. My advice is to buy the best quality which
usually means aluminium and glass construction. Greenhouses are a great way to extend the growing season and a useful place for winter storage of less hardy plants and bulbs. The latest trend in Europe is a conservatory added to the home. It’s a wonderful way to bring the outside inside and makes an awesome living space. A less expensive alternative is a windowsill greenhouse, which, by the way, makes a perfect spot to grow almost anything. If your gardener has a greenhouse, accessories
such as heating pads, quality watering accessories, like the world famous English Hawes watering cans, and maximum-minimum thermometers are always appreciated. Attracting wildlife to gardens has become quite a trend these days. Birdbaths and birdbath heaters, feeders and bird houses are great gifts for children and shut-ins. Birding is the number two leisure activity in North America, and birding accessories are a nice

Minter’s top tips for giving a green Christmas present for those who enjoy this hobby. During winter cold spells, the birds would appreciate some help too. There are a whole host of gardening gift ideas like quality tools, gardeners’ soap and richly toned wind chimes. There are also ergonomically designed tools for easy of use. For those gardeners who are finding it a little more difficult to kneel down and get back up, handy kneelers, which double as a seat, are awesome. Complete gardening ‘wardrobes’ are
available from gardening hats, gloves, aprons and footwear to knee pads and garden tool belts. A gift certificate to a favourite gardening store is also a valued treasure. Water in the garden is very popular these days, and everything from pre-formed ponds to pumps, fountains, filters, waterfalls and LED underwater lights are huge hits as gifts. A ‘vanishing water’ feature, with water bubbling up through pre-drilled basalt stones, is a big thing. A pump and kit that houses this beautiful patio feature makes a wonderful gift to be enjoyed for
years. Research has revealed that of all the gifts people receive, flowers make folks the happiest. Longlasting and perfumed Christmas bouquets with seasonal fragrant greens are a real treat anytime over the Christmas season. Gardeners love plants best of all, and there are some wonderful new hardy plants they can enjoy in the late fall and winter. The new ‘Gold Collection’ Christmas rose (Helleborus niger), winter blooming jasmine, viburnums and ‘Yuletide’ camellias are fabulous. Peeling bark
maples, coral bark maples and contorted filberts and willows are a joy in winter. Everbearing raspberries like ‘Raspberry Shortcake’, the new improved haskap berries, figs and espaliered dwarf fruit trees will be the ‘hottie’ foods for 2015. By stepping out of the box a wee bit, there are some wonderful European garden tours being offered, for example Don Burnett’s ‘Beauty of Britain’ tour, including the Chelsea Flower Show, this coming May 2015. Garden makeovers are all the rage today, and a gift certificate for a quality garden designer is

also a wonderful gift. Tickets to the Northwest Flower and Garden Show in Seattle this coming February 11-15 would be a treasured gift - tickets can be purchased online or at some local garden stores. Tickets or season passes to some of our wonderful Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island gardens would also be a splendid idea. Most gardeners appreciate something unique and different. Quality and usefulness are perhaps the two most important criteria to keep in mind. I hope this helps. EXPLOREPENTICTON.COM FOR EVEN MORE EVENTS

Even strength E h excellence ll When you hear special teams is crucial to team success in hockey, it’s not necessarily true, writes Jacob Bestebroer
The Chilliwack Chiefs and their Mainland division rivals, the Coquitlam Express, renew hostilities Friday night at Prospera Centre. Puck drop is 7 p.m. on Teddy Bear/Toque Toss Night, with fans invited to throw stuffies and hats on the ice when the home team scores its first goal. PROGRESS FILE/ JENNA HAUCK
Larson leads Chilliwack to win The Chilliwack got a two goal night from speedster Jake Larson as they beat the Salmon Arm Silverbacks Wednesday night. The BCHL match at Salmon Arm’s Shaw Centre saw the visitors fall behind 1-0 at 9:23 of period one on a power play goal by Silverback forward Josh Laframboise. The Chiefs equalized 28 seconds later on a goal
by Tipper Higgins, then surged ahead at 15:15 on a Brandon Potomak snipe. A shorthanded goal by Colton Thibault got Salmon Arm even, briefly, early in period two. But a Mason Boh tally at 10:19 restored Chilliwack’s lead, and Larson struck 50 seconds later to make it 4-2. A power play goal by Bryden Marsh at 16:31 got the Silverbacks back
within one heading to the third period. Despite out-shooting Chilliwack 9-3 in the final 20, Salmon Arm couldn’t put the puck past Chiefs stopper David Poirier. The backup goalie was making his second straight start, stopping 29 of 32 shots to earn his fourth win. Larson sealed the deal in the final minute with an empty netter.
In addition to his goal, Potomak picked up two assists, giving him 17 points in 14 games as a Chief. Larson (first), Thibault (second) and Poirier (third) were named the three stars. The Chiefs (20-9-01) host the Coquitlam Express (11-15-1-4) Friday in their last home game before the Christmas break.
Chiefs left out of Canada West mix
Two Chilliwack Chiefs came up short in their bids for a Canada West roster spot. Jordan Kawaguchi and Vincent Desharnais failed to make the roster of the team that will play in the upcoming World Junior A Challenge in Kindersley, SK. The Chilliwack duo attended a tryout camp this week in Calgary, competing against other BCHLers plus skaters from the Alberta Junior
Hockey League (AJHL), Canada West forward spots Saskatchewan Junior along with Kurt Keats Hockey League (SJHL) (Powell River), Marcus and Manitoba Junior Vela (Langley) and Sheldon Rempal (Nanaimo). Penticton’s Demico Switzerland and the United Hannoun and Tyson Jost States joining Canada East occupy two of the 13 in Group A. Denmark and
Russia join Canada West in Group B. Canada West and the United States are the only teams to have won the WJAC. Canada West has won the event three times, the last being in 2011 in Langley, B.C. The United States has won the event five times. National Hockey League players who have played in the WJAC include Vladimir Tarasenko, Beau Bennett, Nail Yakupov, Kyle Turris, Joe Colborne, Mikhail Grigorenko, Reilly Smith, Jaden Schwartz, Justin Schultz, Hampus Lindholm, Elias Lindholm, Riley Nash, Dmitri Kulikov, Calle Jarnkrok and Slava Voinov.
Wednesday’s d d 5-3 win in Salmon Arm was the Chilliwack Chiefs eighth win in 10 games and has given them a five point cushion atop the BCHL’s Mainland division. With Nanaimo struggling a bit as of late the Chiefs, with a record of 20-9-0-1 also have the league’s second best winning percentage. The Chiefs are at 68.3 per cent, trailing only the Penticton Vees at 85.5 per cent. When you look at some of the different team stats, the Chiefs, as you would expect are near the top of the league. They rank fourth out of 16 teams in both goals per game (3.72), and goals against average (3.17). They are tied with Nanaimo for the league’s best record in overtime (5-1). They own the league’s best home record, officially 12-1-0-0 but actually 13-1-0-0 as one of the games played at Prospera Centre during the BCHL Showcase was technically a road game. But strangely for a team that is earning close to 70 per cent of the points available to them, where you won’t find the Chiefs near the top is in special teams. Their power play ranks 13th at 18.2 per cent and their penalty killing is 12th at 76.3 per cent. What that means though is that at even strength the Chiefs are very good. When you factor out all the goals scored on special teams, the Chiefs have outscored their opponents by 22 goals when playing at even strength (note: goals scored while either team has a goalie pulled for an extra attacker is considered even strength). That’s the fourth best total in the league. Four teams stand out when looking at even strength team scoring. Penticton leads at plus 56
followed by Nanaimo (+37) and Vernon (+29). After thatt there is a sharp drop off to Alberni Valley who comes in at fifth (+3). The point here, I think, is that when you hear someone make the point that having strong special teams is crucial to team success in hockey, it’s not necessarily true. It certainly can be something that some teams rely y on for success, but bad special teams does not necessarily equal bad teams and good special teams does nott ensure your team’s record will be good. The Chiefs wrap up the pre-holiday portion of theirr schedule with three games in three days this weekend. Friday night they host the Coquitlam Express on whatt is always a fun night, the annual Teddy Bear / Toque toss. When the Chiefs score their first goal, fans can toss a stuffed animal or a toque on to the ice which will then be given out to local charities. If your closets are void off stuffed animals, some will be available for purchase att the game. Fans can also bid on the Chiefs game-worn red, white and blue retro jerseys the team has worn occasionally y this season. This will be done silentt auction style with the opening bids set at $100. The Chiefs will then be in Trail Saturday before playing an afternoon game Sunday in Penticton. The first game after the break will be the Chiefs annual Fill The Rink for the Food Bank night on Dec. 28. Tickets for that game against the Surrey Eagles, a 5 p.m. start, are just $6 with a donation of a non-perishable food item.

The Chilliwack Chief’s and St. Mary’s Elementary school raffled off a 60-inch TV during a Dec. 3 home game against the Langley Rivermen. The TV was donated by Musicworx Audio Video Unlimited to raise money for the UFV/Chiefs scholarship education fund and St. Mary’s Playground Project. Shannon Lins won the TV. $2267.07 was presented to St Mary’s School.

Albert, born in Vancouver and raised in Chilliwack, attended local schools and was self employed in various local businesses; The Cue Ball, Interior Fire and Safety and Western Cylinder Repair. Early in his youth he excelled in horsemanship which led to competitions, events and shows where he won numerous awards and made many friends. As a teenager he learned to fly at the Chilliwack Flying Club acquiring his private pilot’s license. He furthered his passion for flight by obtaining a commercial and IFR license, eventually gaining employment at the Chilliwack Flying Club where he was, for a time, Chief Flying Instructor and Manager. One of his greatest joys was riding and long distance touring on his motorcycle. He endured hundreds of thousands of miles either alone or with like minded friends, successfully completing numerous and challenging long distance rallies, one of them being The 3 Flags Classic, Mexico to Canada, of which he accomplished at least 15 times. His reward for these personal challenges was a collection of belt buckles, pins and plaques, yet Albert’s greatest reward was in the friendships and memories made. In later years, Lake Chapala, Mexico held great attraction for Albert, so, in 2006 he bought a piece of property at the lake and with a new dream in his pocket, he parked his RV on the lakeside and called it home. He was predeceased by infant son, Stephen and parents, Harold and Ethel Eversfield of Eversfield Poultry Farms, Chilliwack. He is survived by partner Ellen Stack, Lake Chapala and is deeply missed by former wife Erica who will remember Albert for his compassionate, tender and generous heart. He also leaves his faithful canine companion, Zak, who kept vigil at the door for many days waiting for Albert’s return. Rest in Peace ~ Until we meet again.

Laura Irwin
Laura Margaret (Green) Irwin passed away peacefully on 10 December 2014 in Cascade Hospice in Chilliwack, British Columbia. Laura is survived by her Husband Charles Ross Irwin; her 4 children: Colleen (Dave) Porteous, Stewart (Taralee) Irwin, Maggie (Matt) Reno, Andrew (Paige) Irwin, and 14 grandchildren: William, Scott, Rachel, Rebecca, Braiden, Sam, Brighton, Alex, Jackson, Lydia, Cody, Sean, Mackay, and Brielle. She is also survived by her Brothers, Donald (Judy) Green and Lyle (Ardell) Green. Laura was born in April 1950 in Lethbridge, Alberta, to Margaret MacKay (MacMillan) and John Woodrow Green. In 1957 her family relocated to Ocean Falls, British Columbia. Laura attended high school in Provo UT, and Hobbs, New Mexico and began her university studies at BYU University in Provo. After moving to Vancouver, BC in 1968 she met Charles Ross Irwin, and they were Married April 1, 1971. In 1978 Laura and Ross moved to Dawson Creek where they lived for 11 years, and then moved to Chilliwack in 1989 and remained there. Laura loved her work as a Kindergarten and Grade One teacher, from which she retired in 2007. Even after her retirement she taught the youth in the seminary program, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved sewing and gardening, and loved to take her Grandchildren out on fun excursions. Above everything she loved to go to the temple and loved working in the Vancouver Temple with Ross, and had dreamed that one day they would be able to serve a mission for the Church. She was a dedicated and always sacrificing wife and mother and a Proud Grandmother. She lived her life to be able to serve those around her and loved when she was able to be a part of the growth of her children, their friends, or her students. Laura was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma in Sep 2011, and was told that she only had months to live. She is loved by her family and will be sorely missed, until we are able to greet her again. We rejoice in the knowledge that she is no longer in pain, and that she will be able to join her parents and other loved ones, that are waiting to welcome her into paradise. Funeral services will be held on December 15, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Tyson Road in Chilliwack, BC. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Chilliwack Hospice Society. McLean’s (604) 847-3477 12/14F_IO12

August 25, 1934 – December 6, 2014
Ann Peters It is with mixed emotions that we announce the passing of my wife Ann Peters nee Enns into glory, to be with Jesus Dec. 8, 2014. She was born in Russia 1922. Emigrated to Canada with her parents in 1930. They came to Sardis B.C. in 1937 and then to Mission in 1939. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in her teens and was baptized by emersion with her parents in what was then known as the North Abbotsford M.B. Church. Besides helping her parents on the farm and in the home she worked in one of the canneries in Mission. Later she went to Vancouver to do housework and there trained and worked as a telephone operator. In 1951 she married the love of her life Henry Peters and moved back to Abbotsford to join and help him develop a small mixed farm there. It was during the 50’s that she with her husband were blessed with the birth of three sons, and in the early 60’s took in two foster daughters with Downs syndrome. As the family grew and the opportunity arose the Peters moved to a larger farm in east Chilliwack in 1969. Here the sons attended school, grew up and married. Ann and Henry with the girls moved off the farm to Promontory in 1981 In 2002 Ann began to show early signs dementia. It was very hard for her to give up the care of her two foster daughters after caring for them for 37 years. In 2007 Ann and Henry moved into an assisted living facility due to Ann’s progressing illness. As it progressed slowly she was moved into residential care in May of 2013. After 19 months in this care the Lord Himself took her home to be with Him. We are most grateful to all the staff that so lovingly cared for Ann at the Cascade Lodge. She was predeceased by her parents Abram and Elisabeth Enns, her sister Kay Borstel and brothers Abram, Peter, and Neil She is survived by her grieving husband Henry, her son Allen and wife Barb, son Jim and wife Connie, son Dean and wife Edith. As well as grand children Amy and Steve Arnold, Sherrisse Peters, Cathyann and Brent Bessey, Stacey and Felise Peters, Dan and Jen, Ryan and Christen, Eric, Kevin and Tyler and eight greatgrandsons. The two foster daughters Beverly Young and Rhonda Conconi. The memorial service will take place at the Alliance church on young Rd. Wed. Dec.17 at 1:30 P.M. Les was born August 25, 1934 in Owen Sound, Ontario and sadly left us on December 6, 2014. He is survived by his wife Wilma, his four children; Ron (Cindy), Joanne(Leroy), Chris (Louise), Angelene and Wilma’s three children Eric (Leanne), Lisa (Ken), Kendall (Donna Lee) and his other daughter Keron. Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings Gordon (Natalka) and Joyce, sisters-in-law Allison Stacy and Brenda Mitchell plus numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Les had a long and interesting life. As a young teenager he lived in Hamilton, Ontario apprenticing as a baker, then the family moved to Edmonton, where he worked various jobs. He was in the Canadian Army, PPCLI and was in the medical corps. After discharge, he went to Valemount, B.C. where he lived for many years raising his family. To support them he worked for CN, the Ministry of Transportation and several sawmills. In the late 80’s he moved to Chilliwack. Here, he was a drug and alcohol counsellor at the Chilliwack Lake Prisons and then ran a half-way house in Surrey. Freeway driving was not for him, so he completed a home-care nursing program at FVC, which enabled him to obtain a position with Fraser-Cheam Home Support until he retired at 65. Then he devoted his time to farming his Diamond M farm. All during his busy life, he had time to become actively involved in the IWA as Union Rep. on the board of the M2W2 Prison Ministry, the Knights of Columbus as Grand Knight for one and a half terms, the Metis Associations of Chilliwack and Abbotsford, where he was instrumental in getting them active. Interested in children and education, he ran for School Board Trustee in the 2011 election. He was on the Aboriginal Enhancement Committees in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Mission School Districts, where two Agreements were signed and a third is pending. In his younger years, he did a great deal of hunting, trapping and fishing. In later years, it was camping and travelling with Wilma. Lately his illness prevented much physical activity so did a lot of reading, especially Metis history. We will miss him terribly; he always had time for everyone, a friend to many, on the phone offering advice or solace. Many thanks to the ER staff at Abbotsford Gen. Hospital for their efforts and kind words. Prayers will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 8909 Mary St. at 7:00 PM on Friday, December 12. Funeral Mass will be at St. Mary’s on Saturday, December 13 at 11:00 AM In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lung Association of B.C. would be appreciated. McLean’s (604) 847-3477 12/14F_IO12
