Mayors want to increase PST 0.5% bump would pay for transit improvements By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgnews.com
Metro Vancouver mayors have opted for a half-per-cent hike in the provincial sales tax to pay for more transit – over the protest of Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read, who voted against it. “With all the problems with TransLink, I don’t believe they’re going to spend the money properly, Read said Thursday. Along with West Vancouver Mayor Michael Smith and Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, she voted against the proposal to raise the PST in Metro Vancouver from seven to 7.5 per cent. See Mayors, 5

Pilot recovering after crash landing Engine died moments after take-off at Pitt airport By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
The Transportation Safety Board has found that mechanical problems caused Tuesday’s emergency landing of a Cessna 152 at Pitt Meadows Regional Airport and won’t pursue the incident any further. Tuesday, just before 3 p.m., the 23-yearold pilot took off southbound on Runway 18, headed to the Langley airport, when
the engine developed fuel problems. The pilot pulled a 180-degree turn, trying to make it back to the runway, which goes north-south, but only made it to the taxiway, metres from the Fraser River. The plane crashed on landing and bystanders jumped to rescue the pilot, who remains in hospital. Jeep Mandair, of Pacific Aviation Academy at the airport, said the plane belongs to his company and the pilot was a former student trying to gain flying time in order to get his commercial licence. The plane, though, was rented as a private category plane to licenced pilots and
was not used for providing lessons. “It started to choke and he immediately decided to turn left and make a forced landing. He barely made the pavement, Mandair said. “If he wasn’t a good pilot, he probably would have gone into the river. Mandair talked to safety board investigators and said while the plane was warmed up for several minutes and water had been drained and the engine was running smoothly, some water could have remained at the bottom of the carburetor.

Bob Peever of B.C. Hydro surveys the spill from the Hayward Lake Reservoir and Ruskin Dam, Thursday. The gates were opened, creating one of the largest spills in 20 years, 815 cubic metres a second, owing in part to recent rainfall. The only higher spill took place on Nov. 10, 1989, when the average daily spill was 1,100 cubic metres a second.
Reinforcing the Ruskin Dam Detailed report surveys all of B.C. for seismic risk By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
T
he big one could hit anytime, crumbling shorelines, snapping pipelines and sending entire parts of B.C.’s coast beneath the grinding techtonic plates. The Ruskin Dam will have a better chance of withstanding such a quake by 2017 when upgrades to it will be complete. A recent B.C. Hydro study of seismic conditions in B.C. shows for most of the corporation’s big dams, the risk of a cataclysmic earthquake remains the same or lower because of the constant efforts at strengthening the facilities. That applies to the Ruskin Dam – a massive structure on the Stave River that produces power for more than 30,000 Metro Vancouver homes. It is getting its own seismic strengthening as part of a complete rebuild.
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Renovations should be done by 2017. “It’s not that the [Ruskin] area is more safe. It’s just that our dams are designed to withstand the major earthquake,” explained Judy Dobrowlski, with B.C. Hydro. “Big earthquakes happen here, of course, given our proximity to the major subduction zone, which is off Vancouver Island. So there’s no change in our understanding of the hazards. It’s just how our facilities are improved to continue operating.” The study does say, though, that the effects of a quake on parts of Vancouver Island and along Bridge River in the Lilloett area could be worse than anticipated. The study is the culmination of six years
of work by a cross-section of experts, including seismologists, physicists and geologists. The team studied the history of seismic events across B.C. and adjoining regions and identified where major seismic activity could occur. It developed prediction models and determined resulting seismic ground motions at the various dams. “This methodology is now a best-in-class model for calculating earthquake hazards for utilities,” says a release. Dobrowlski said B.C. Hydro has always done seismic studies, but this is the largest, most wide-ranging one ever done. Its data will be shared with municipalities as they plan infrastructure and development. “Because it’s such a large, comprehensive thorough body of work, it provides more clarity about the seismic hazards across the province.” Once the $750-million renovation of the Ruskin Dam is done, it will be able to withstand a one-in-10,000 year earthquake. Seven old piers and gates are being replaced by five larger, stronger gates, and six new piers, creating a completely new appearance of the structure. The new gates will weigh twice that of the old ones and have double the amount of steel. A wider, two-lane road and pedestrian

walkway will replace the narrow one-lane passage on top of the dam. An innovative feature is a new asphaltlike material developed for a buried wall. The material can absorb shocks and can self-heal, preventing leaks from developing in the anchoring wall in the softer soil on the north side of the dam. That wall will attach to a longer buried wall of plastic concrete. Still to be installed are the guts of the operation – three new turbines to replace those from another age. The first turbine, or generator, is 84 years old. The second is 76 years old and the newest turbine was installed in the 1950s. The rebuild has reached the halfway point and the contractor that will install the new turbines has just moved on to site. The turbines, eight per cent more efficient, will be installed one at time to allow the dam to keep operating during the refit and to keep producing power for Metro Vancouver. The whole rebuild is comparable to changing a car’s tire while still driving down the road, said Dobrowlski. Steady progress is being made towards the 2017-18 completion date, she added. “There are always surprises when you’re retro-fitting an old facility that was built in the 1930s.”

The many homeowners living on Maple Ridge’s flood plains have been keeping a close eye on the rising North and South Alouette rivers, the relentless rainfall, and hoping their houses don’t flood – as Rhys McCormick’s did. McCormick uses electric pumps to keep his basement on 232nd Street dry, but when B.C. Hydro shut off the power on Thursday morning, he was flooded. He said other neighbours on automatic pump systems likely faced the same problem. McCormick received notice of the planned outage in the mail last Friday, and acquired a gas pump. The weather was dry for the morning, but when the afternoon rains came and he needed the pump, it didn’t work.
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Rhys McCormick bales water from one of his basement doors Thursday afternoon. He said that with the recent rains, and the ground saturated, Hydro should have considered the flood potential for residents in the low-lying areas, and rescheduled the work. “Circumstances have changed in the past two days, when we got two feet of water dumped on us.” “I told them that they’re flooding my basement, and the guy laughed at
me,” he said. Even 20-30 millimetres is a lot of rain – and that was forecast for Thursday night. B.C. Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer said the utility company is replacing 10,000 poles throughout the province this year, and gives advance notice to customers before a power outage. The advisory about the Maple Ridge outage went out on Nov. 28.
Those who cannot be without power are advised to make alternate arrangements, such as acquiring a generator. At the suggestion the work should have been postponed because of the recent rain, she responded: “It’s Vancouver ... ” McCormick was among 875 Hydro customers without power for most of the work day on Thursday, in the area of 232nd Street, north of Fern Crescent. The power was scheduled to be back on by 4 p.m. With rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for Thursday night, city workers were anticipating the closure of 224th Street by Friday morning. The closure will likely occur north of 136th Avenue, as the area is completely saturated and can’t take more rain, said city manager of communications Fred Armstrong. Even a small amount of water covering the road surface can create a situation where drivers can’t see where the pavement is, and they will drive into the ditch, said Armstrong. City crews have been watching the rising North and South Alouette rivers, ready to take action if they top their banks. City crews responded to roads flooded by clogged storm water drains during Wednesday night’s storm. “People have been really good about reporting problems,” Armstrong said, noting there were six complaints about drains that needed to be cleared. The city is asking residents to ensure their street’s storm drains stay clear of leaves and other debris, to avoid flooding.

‘Residents want more’ Tax from front
If taxpayers approve the tax hike next March, the new tax will raise another $250 million yearly for TransLink and cost the average homeowner another $125 a year. The new money will help pay for the mayors’ vision for transportation over the decade. Read, though, said there’s no priority list in the vision saying when each part of Metro Vancouver will get its projects. The mayors’ full $7.5-billion 10-year package of upgrades – unveiled last June – includes a Broadway subway, light rail in Surrey, 11 new B-line express bus routes, frequent SeaBuses and a 25-per-cent hike in bus service, plus more money for HandyDart and West Coast Express. The Vancouver subway or Surrey light rail project could take all of the new tax money, leaving Maple Ridge with nothing, Read said. “I want to be able to say exactly, this is what the increase is for and absolutely – this is when you’re going to get it. “It’s not palatable any
other way. The proposed referendum question will list key projects that would be built with the dedicated tax. It asks: “Do you support a half percentage point (0.5 per cent) increase to the provincial sales tax in Metro Vancouver, dedicated to the Mayors’ Transportation and Transit Plan, with independent audits and public reporting? Read said it wasn’t easy voting against the new tax, given she supports the mayors’ vision for transportation improvements, and acknowledged that the tax hike is likely the fairest way to raise money. She and the two other mayors were outvoted 18-3. “For me, this was a governance issue, she said. “The province has basically downloaded the political accountability on to the mayors. She has no problem with being accountable, but said mayors then also need more responsibility in overseeing TransLink. “Everything in my core says Maple Ridge residents will not sit well with having to pay more taxes and see-
ing very few services.â€? She doesn’t know if the referendum will pass when Metro Vancouver residents vote next spring, assuming the provincial government OKs the question. Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart called the plan “an enormous jump forwardâ€? that the region cannot afford to reject. Read added that in Maple Ridge, TransLink’s service optimization plan, which has reduced some bus routes if they’re not used, doesn’t give people enough time to begin using transit. “My sense from the public is that they don’t feel that they have enough options ‌ shuttles coming every two hours.â€? But she says Maple Ridge will eventually get a rapid bus service. “We need a B-line that is truly an express bus. We need a fast B-line.â€? People are looking for a rapid system, with signal priority, she said, to connect quickly between Maple Ridge downtown and the new Evergreen SkyTrain in Coquitlam.

Not reasonable The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled, in a split vote, that police don’t need a search warrant to look at the contents of an arrest suspect’s cell phone. Officers have to meet several conditions first, including taking detailed notes on how they searched and what they found. Police in the U.S. need a warrant to conduct such a search, and rightly so. This is a major issue of privacy. Historically, police have had the right, during an arrest, to search a person’s purse or carry bag for evidence related to a suspected crime, or for weapons. A cell phone could be a weapon, as seen with the Boston Marathon bombings. And one could contain information compromising public safety, or be used to evade law enforcement. But should cell phones, or any mobile digital device be an exception to those historical rules? According to the Supreme Court decision, prompt access to a cell phone could help locate an accomplice to a crime or preserve evidence that would be otherwise lost. A review of recent calls or text messages may help locate the other perpetrators, preventing further crimes. Only recent e-mails, texts, photos and the call log will be available, according to the majority judges. The minority, however, felt that cell phones are different than carry bags and should be treated differently. They are computers, and search warrants are required to check those in homes. Cell phones contain vast amounts of personal information, which is why they have password access. Section 8 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms provides everyone in Canada with protection against unreasonable search and seizure. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association is correct in this case, that because the capacity to discover private information on a cell phone is so much greater than if being frisked, a warrantless search is unreasonable. – The News Tell us what you think @ www.mapleridgenews.com

You’re never too old to go back A few months ago I made a decision to return to school in order to complete Grade 12 and, thereby, receive a graduation diploma. I’m sure it will come as no surprise to many of my long standing critics that I never stayed in school Sidewinder long enough to learn Sandy Macdougall some of the basics about English language composition. Well, I’m just going to surprise all of you by completing the requisite courses and, hopefully, receive high marks in the process. I began Grade 12 in September 1956 at Maple Ridge Senior Secondary, but part way through the year I moved to Vancouver to live with my birth father. I attended Kitsilano High School for a few months before deciding that I was better suited for traveling and partying and more exciting things in life than attending school. I guess I don’t have to tell you how brain-dead and stupid that turned out. I spent the next few decades of my life looking back with regret. That little blip in my education stood in the way of almost anything I had ever hoped to achieve.
Q
uestion of the week:
You might well wonder why it took me so long to get around to doing what I should have done 57 years ago. I can only tell you that the reasons for this unseemly delay are many and complicated. I was working and couldn’t take the time off; then I was married and had children to support; then I was too old, anyway. I think you can get it by now. Another excuse was that I thought I was already about as smart as a man needs to be to succeed. After all, I had owned a few small and almost successful businesses. I had also worked for a few years in real estate. Of course, there was my great, or, not so great, success in municipal and federal politics. And I would be remiss if I left out my career as a reporter and columnist. All of this was done without benefit of a completed high school education. So for about 57 years, I let my ego stand in the way of improving myself and my value as an employee, father, husband, and member of the community. Then a funny thing happened. A couple of years ago, my grandson’s wife went back to school to earn a graduation diploma. At that time, Maria was looking after her two children, her husband, all of the normal stuff any mother undertakes, and making sure the kids got to soccer, dance and ball games on time. Despite
Do you support local businesses when shopping for the holidays? Yes: 77% – No: 23%
all of this, she found time to get back to school and graduate. With Maria’s success, I was left with no excuses. Other than writing this, I am retired and have plenty of time. So I made initial inquiries concerning what courses I would be required to take. I was informed that I needed English 12 and History 12. The English course is mainly composition. So, when I have successfully completed that assignment, I will be a much better writer. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. The history course is based on the 20th Century. This should be relatively easy since I managed to survive through 60 cent of it. A few weeks ago, we received our midterm report cards. I was fairly satisfied with my marks, but I wasn’t sure if I had to take the report card home for my wife to sign. Trying to explain to two of my greatgrandchildren that grandpa was going back to school was hilarious. They think I’m way too old. The main purpose behind writing this is the possibility that there are others out there who, for one reason or another, left school without graduating. I’m here to tell you it’s never too late to go back. Sandy Macdougall is a retired journalist and former district councillor.

THE NEWS/letters What about the kids? Nancy McConnell · University of the Fraser Valley: Re: Still no funding for youth shelter (The News, Dec. 10). This place needs to be funded as well as more services are needed in Maple Ridge for youth. There is an epidemic here amongst young people addicted to oxy’s; they are dying. Something needs to be done. We need to wake up and smell the roses. Iron Horse is needed and funding should be provided with no red tape involved. It is truly unbelievable that this facility has to close. What is going to happen to the kids who utilize this important service?
Expand delivery Ed Nicholles: Re: Residents fed up with mail theft (The News, Dec. 10). If residents truly are fed up, they should write to their MP Randy Kamp and demand Canada Post use its millions of dollars in profits to expand door to door delivery.
Too expensive Lorenzo Girotto · Garibaldi Secondary School: Re: Mayor asks for definite SkyTrain B-line (The News, Dec. 10). Sorry, but the property taxes in Maple Ridge are way too high as it is, while showing little value for the cost residents have to bear. Come up with a better way to fund this.

Our dikes are for everyone Editor, The News: My wife and I have enjoyed the dike system in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge for many years. We feel blessed to have such an opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty and share this with our community. It is common to see dogs off leash along the dikes. Our own dogs are off leash, but leashed up when we are approached by children, cyclists, runners or other walkers with dogs on leashes. Recently, we had problems with horses on the dikes, by North Sharpe Road access. I grew up with horses and have always enjoyed riding when presented the opportunity. But the large waste piles left behind in the middle of the dike pathway and horse owners walking side by side, taking up most of the dike, forces others to be close to steep edges. Our puppy is well behaved, but terrified of horses. We no longer walk on dikes where horses are permitted because

Murray back as SB chair Eleanor Palis vice-chair again By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com
School board chair Mike Murray and vicechair Eleanor Palis were both returned to their positions after the seven-member school board held a pair of votes on Wednesday. New trustee Lisa Beare, the top votegetter in the November school board election, ran against incumbent Murray for the position of board chair for the coming year. Palis was opposed by newcomer Korleen Carreras. Beare and Carreras both were members of the Voice team during the election, along with incumbent Ken Clarkson and Cherie Delainey – the latter who was not successful on Nov. 15. That team was supported by the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association and CUPE,
and ran on a platform of taking a strong stand against inadequate government funding, and offering more stakeholder involvement in decision making. Despite any divisiveness resulting from the election campaign, Murray said the board enters its term with good dynamics. “We spent some time with each other at new trustee orientation and BCSTA (B.C. School Trustees Association) event,” he said. “It’s a group of very open trustees, clearly interested in hearing what each other has to say.” Murray said he prefers to take a collaborative approach to being board chair. Unlike municipal governments, where the mayor is elected separately from the rest of council, the board chair and the vice are both chosen by their peers, for a one-year term. It’s a procedure that works well, said Murray. “I think it is a good
process, because what it does emphasize is shared leadership,” he said. The trustees were all given their committee assignments, and Murray each will be put in a leadership position, on some body or group, he said. The board will not meet until 2015, in what will be a busy year. After the strain of a teachers strike, people in education have to pull together, said Murray. “Rekindling our relationships with our key partners,” is the first goal, he said. “Not just teachers and CUPE – parents, students, principals and vice-principals.” He said the new board gets a fresh start with recently hired superintendent Sylvia Russell. Education funding will be another priority. “Identifying how we can collectively advo-
cate better, and we want to meet with g o v e r n m e nt again on that,” he said. A facilities plan will be on the agenda early in the year, and the board first must “map out the consultation process.” Murray allowed that where to built new schools, or school closures, can be an emotional issue for parents. And the board will enter budget dialogue, beginning with the impacts of its previous budget decisions, including cuts to school secretaries and charging fees for using the school bus. “It will be important for us to collect that information for two reasons – one is to inform our next decisions, and two so that we can convey the impacts of the cuts we’ve had to make, to our funders [government].”

This Saturday, high school student volunteers from Garibaldi and Thomas Haney secondary will bring a little Christmas cheer to families who use the Friends in Need Food Bank.
About 15 students at Garibaldi, and a similar number at Thomas Haney have been organizing a Christmas luncheon, explains Jackie Ponomariov, Garibaldi’s Key Club editor – a group affiliated with the Kiwanis Service Club. This Saturday at the
Garibaldi cafeteria they will offer a hot dog lunch for 110 children between the ages of two and 12, and some 200 people, including parents. There are new presents wrapped up for everyone, Santa will appear, the school band will play Christmas carols, and

Norden the Magician will entertain. “This is the biggest event of the year for Key Club so everyone is extremely excited, said Ponomariov. She explained that both high schools held toy drives to provide presents for their young guests. “I am happy to report that we have raised a total of 200 toys this year to give out to the kids at the Christmas dinner, she said. “For the first time, many of our new members will get to experience the smiles on those kids faces and the joy of their families. John Cowan, the Kiwanis member who oversees the Key clubs, volunteers at the food bank and is on a firstname basis with many of those who use it. “Working at the food bank, I can tell you there’s a lot of families in need, he said. “They don’t want to be there, and they’re good people. He said it is great for the students to be involved in such a hands-on way in their community service. “It shows them at a very early age how important it is to do things for other people, and serve the community, and the satisfaction that brings, said Cowan. Ponomariov agrees. “This organization builds our youth for tomorrow and future generations.

Mayors compete for donations Read, Becker seek support at holiday train By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com
The mayors of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows have only been elected a few weeks and already they’re at each other – in a friendly sort of way. Nicole Read and John Becker have agreed to a challenge – to see which city can bring in the most food and cash, per capita, when the CP Holiday Train stops in both cities, on Wednesday, Dec. 17. Which one raises the smaller amount has to display the flag of its rival in its city hall for the next month. “The CP Holiday Train event raises money for local food banks all across Canada, and in Maple
Ridge and Pitt Meadows the Friends in Need Food Bank relies on this fundraiser to fill its shelves well into the New Year, when donations dry up,” Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read said. “Mayor Becker and I decided to take advantage of this unique opportunity to issue this community challenge and honour the work of our local food bank volunteers.” This is the first year the holiday train will stop in Pitt Meadows, doing so at Harris Road to mark the city’s 100th anniversary. The train usually stops at the Port Haney station in Maple Ridge, where Christmas lights and music entertains the crowds who show up with donations of food and money for the food bank. The Port Haney stop will be at 7:30 p.m., fol-
lowed by the stop in Pitt Meadows at 8:45 p.m. Maple Ridge seems to be the early favourite to win the challenge. A separate event, the Maple Ridge Fire Department Boot Drive on Saturday, Dec. 13, will boost Maple Ridge’s contribution. All the proceeds from that drive, when fire-
fighters are out at local malls, will be poured into Maple Ridge’s contribution to the CP Holiday Train on Dec. 17. Donations can also be made at Maple Ridge city hall, where nonperishable food items can be left in a bin, while cash donations can be left with the receptionist. Entertainment on the
train this year includes Blue Rodeo recording artist Jim Cuddy along, with Santa Claus. Since 1999, Canadian Pacific’s Holiday Train has raised close to $9.5 million and 1.5 million kilograms of food. Each Holiday Train is about 300 metres long, with 14 rail cars decorated with LED lights.

This maintenance work will improve the water quality; however, during this cleaning process some residents could experience water pressure drops and milky or dirty water. You may take the following steps to correct the problem: MILKY WATER: Open tap slightly to bleed air from the water lines. DIRTY WATER: Turn an outside tap on until the water becomes clear. with financial backing from the Aquilini Group, the Vancouver family business that owns the Vancouver Canucks and extensive real estate and farm holdings. Eagle Spirit is proposing a pipeline from the Alberta oil sands to an upgrader that would produce synthetic crude oil for export by tankers, likely from the Prince Rupert area. Black announced last week that engineering firm Hatch Ltd. has completed a design and feasibility study for a refinery at an estimated cost of $22 billion, making it one of the 10 biggest in the world. Black said he sees obvious similarities with the Pacific Future proposal, which describes new technology and carbon capture to reduce its environmental impact. Kitimat Clean proposes a new refining process that avoids production of petroleum coke, a coal-like byproduct of conventional heavy oil refining that is used in steel making. Black said the entry of Pacific Future, headed by an executive of Mexican conglomerate Grupo Salinas, shows the business case for a B.C. refinery is sound and there is capacity for more than one plant. All proposals for B.C. North Coast refining await the fate of the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project, which received a federal environmental certificate this year and awaits approval by the federal cabinet. All proposals also face opposition to pipeline and tanker transport of heavy oil. Pacific Future has appointed Atleo as a senior advisor for partnerships, months after Premier Christy Clark appointed him as an advisor for dialogue between First Nations, government and industry. Black said his next steps include negotiating “acceptable compensation for his project with the Kitselas and Haisla First Nations for use of their traditional territory.

Plane from front
“It choked the airplane. It happens, by the way, to a lot of pilots, even in normal conditions.” Often, that water can be burned off in normal operation of the plane, but this time it happened at the wrong time. If the pilot had just a few more seconds before the engine conked out, he likely would have made it back to the runway or least safely landed on the taxiway. But by that time, the airspeed had dropped too much. “He barely just passed over the bench where people sit and watch the river.” Once he got over the taxi way, the plane came down hard, smashing the front end and causing a fuel leak. However, there was no fire. “The plane is a write-off,” Mandair said. He added the pilot, who was trained at the airport, should be out of hospital in a week. Ridge Meadows RCMP say the man was from Langley and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg and broken jaw.

quickly. With this in mind, Hyundai has backed away from the fluid approach to a more sculpted design that shares some styling cues from the top-of-range Hyundai Genesis. The front features a squarer grille opening, edgier bumper and front chin-spoiler. The base model is fitted with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has and 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels with LED daytime running lights, halogen headlamps or HID lights on the limited trim. The performance oriented 2.0 Turbo Sport model, seen above, comes with a two-toned front spoiler, 18-inch wheels, standard HID headlamps, quad exhaust tips and a lower diffuser on the rear bumper. The top trim levels of both the 2.4L and 2.0 Sport have a blacked-out section of the front grille which signifies the car comes with adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system.
Verdict Hyundai has done it again, delivering a very attractive car, full of features, at an attractive price. 2.4L models range from $23,999 to $32,999 in the top Limited trim. This model has most of the features found in the top 2.0L turbo but without the added power. The base 2.0L turbo starts at $30,999 and the top Ultimate model, seen here, is $34,799. Both the Limited and Ultimate get the forward collision warning system and lane departure safety features, plus they also get adaptive cruise control. For 2015, the Sonata is a big step foreword in design. The added safety features will be attractive and the constant pushing-of-the-envelope from Hyundai is welcome. The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 185hp or 2.0L Turbo with 245hp Fill-up: 9.8L/6.7L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $23.999-$34,799 zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca
Drive Both the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and the 2.0L turbo have been carried over from the last model but they have been modified to produce better torque delivery and fuel economy. Hyundai has dropped the horsepower output from 198hp to 185hp in the 2.4L and limited the torque to 178hp. The 2.0L turbo also receives a horsepower drop from 274hp to 245hp and the torque drops from 268 lb.-ft to 160 lb.-ft. Hyundai claims that the torque is lower in the RPM range and the fuel consumption is improved. The experience behind the wheel of the turbo is still very invigorating but not as hectic as the last model, it delivers a more usable driving experience. Power is smooth and refined; the turbo feels like a V6 without the accompanying fuel bill.

he rain and windstorms have started and it won’t be long before the temperatures start to dip. Northern B.C. and the Interior have already experienced the cold. On the coast, it seems every year the first snowfall creates chaos and adjusting to the conditions is
a big challenge for many people. That said, driving in winter generally presents more problems than driving in other seasons wherever you call home. The vehicle and the driver must be prepared to cope with these kinds of driving conditions. In winter driving, braking and stopping the vehicle cause the most difficult
moments. The tires play a critical role in stopping the vehicle, and they need even more care and attention than in the other seasons. Most SUVs have a passenger car tire classification with M+S stamped on the sidewall, for mud and snow and are considered all-season tires. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle. Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles, but it won’t help you stop any faster. Many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump them in attempting to stop. controlled more frequently. This is because a reduction of the outside temperature causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, accelerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a value around 1-2 PSI for each five degrees C decrease in temperature. Contrary to popular opinion, a lower inflation pressure than normal does not improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more liable to damage. Always remember that, in any season and with any temperature, insufficient pressure is always the main cause of tire damage. Here is some advice to always bear in mind it is during winter driving conditions: use brakes carefully; brake early; brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions. Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the pavement. Do not use the cruise control in winter conditions. Relaxing flotation device on four wheels
Whistler – Each morning, I wake up to my inbox clogged with a plethora of messages boasting of “great deals.” And while I swiftly send most to the trash, I often entertain the idea of not paying full price for a meal, or getting my mani/ pedi at a 75 per cent off, or occasionally splurging on a spa treatment. Not to mention yoga classes at a fraction of the cost. One message in particular from West Coast Float caught my eye recently and gave me an excuse to take the Volvo V60 T6 R-Design wagon for a longer drive up to Whistler. The image accompanied with the text looked like something out of a sci-fi movie. There was this woman, floating in lagoon-blue water, in a rather interesting contraption. Beside it were words like “sensory deprivation,” “relaxation,” and “salt.” A colleague had mentioned to me in conversation about these float pods so I bought two sessions and brought along a friend to enjoy it with me. Without going into too many details on the experience, I floated for

tures. With room for five inside, a cargo area of 692 litres, and an overall impressive execution, I didn’t want to give this bright red wagon back. Though I wouldn’t call it a deal with a price as tested of $58,700 (then again, the base V60 T5 FWD starts at $38,900), it is the real deal: an incredible wagon that gives you all the pleasure of driving without the salt in your eyes. wagon can be likened to a flotation tank experience: but don’t close your eyes and turn off the lights to enjoy the tranquility. It glides effortlessly and handles brilliantly in whatever environment I put it in. Thanks to the R-Design Sport chassis, which has been lowered 15 mm, and spring stiffness is 15 per cent higher compared with the Dynamic chassis in the standard V60. That said, it’s stiff in all the right places. The dynamic handling on the sinuous roads made me realize just how much I missed driving the Swedish brand’s vehicles. The smooth-revving 3.0L, turbocharged I-6 engine also helps sweeten the deal. With 325 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque being produced (with Polestar Performance software tuning), it’s no sleeper. It’s then linked with a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with advanced Quick Shift, and a Sport Mode Haldex electronically controlled all-wheel-drive with Instant Traction. I was hoping for some snow on the ground so I could play in it a little, but, alas, my request was not answered. Maybe next time. Have a sustainable Christmas By Kevin Gillies
W
ith Christmas quickly approaching, so too are the mounds of wrapping paper that make their way into the recycling box after a flurry of gift opening. The holiday season can tend to be a crazy rush and the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society is hoping that rush doesn’t lead to a lot more waste. “Once people get into the Christmas rush, they tend to trade sustainability for convenience,” said Kim Day, executive director of Ridge Meadows Recycling. “If you plan ahead to ‘Make Memories, Not Garbage,’ you can focus on the things that matter, not just things.” She suggests people make gift lists in advance to help think of nonwasteful gifts: • courses, classes, or workshops will teach a new skill and give the gift of time to focus on learning; • tickets to a play, movie, speaker series, or concert are gifts that delight when they’re given and when the event takes place; • homemade crafts or the offer of time babysitting, dog walking, or sharing one of your skills is a lovely way to show you care; • holiday baking or appetizers that are always a welcome treat and can save the recipient time and money while hosting a holiday event. The society suggests that, when wrapping gifts, people use cloth or paper gift bags that can be used repeatedly, or use cloth gifts such as tea towels, new dish cloths, clothes, and ribbon as wrapping for other gifts.

When unwrapping gifts, pay attention to what will happen to the gift wrap.
Other ideas include using children’s artwork for wrapping special gifts or giving gifts that don’t need wrapping. For people using wrapping paper, the RMRS suggests they pay attention to what kind of wrapping paper is bought and used as plastic gift wrap or foil printed paper is not recyclable. Only buy paper wrap that can be put in the blue recycling bag. When unwrapping gifts, pay attention to what will happen to the gift wrap. If you unwrap presents carefully,
most wrap can be reused for many years to come. Remove all ribbons, bows, and other decorations to store and use again next Christmas. Sort paper wrap into blue recycling bag. Remember that mixing plastic and foil print wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons in with your paper wrap makes it difficult, if not impossible, to recycle the paper wrap. The paper manufacturers cannot accept loads with a high level of contamination and unfortunately mixed loads sometimes end up in
the dump. Taking the time to sort out these non-paper items means the paper can actually be made into new paper products. ••• Also this year, if your recycling pickup is on Thursday, there is a special Saturday pickup planned for you. Thursday pickup residents can set out their recycling by 7 a.m. on Dec. 27 and it will be picked up. And for people who have made the switch to environmentally friendly LED Christmas lights, old lights can be dropped off for free at recycling depots, in bins located at

So if Santa brings you a new cell phone, new electronics, appliances or a new computer, you can recycle the old items for free at the depot. Plus there is free depot drop-off for the Styrofoam, cardboard and plastic packing the presents came in. The recycling depot (0092 – 236th St., just off River Road in the Albion Industrial Park) is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but open late (till 7 p.m.) Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Garbage drop-off is available next door at Metro Vancouver’s Transfer Station, which is operated by SSG Holdings (604-466-9277). ••• The First Haney Scout group, which is participating in this year’s Waste Reduction Challenge, are selling Christmas trees seven days a week in the Cap’s cycles parking lot at the corner of Lougheed Highway and 216th Street. When the holidays are over, people can bring their stripped Christmas trees by for chipping, by donation, for the Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue team. The chipping will take place next to Planet Ice from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekends of Jan. 3-4 and Jan. 10-11. The scouts will also provide curbside pickup service of discarded Christmas trees to be chipped for a recommended minimum donation of $10. • To arrange pickup email the scouts at scoutchipping@gmail.com or call 604-244-2850.

32 -- Friday, December 12, 2014 -- THE NEWS - www.mapleridgenews.com
Nicole’s Story I started smoking pot at the age of 13. I thought life was one big party. I was what people called a “functioning” drug addict. I had a son at the age of 28, and that’s when I fully understood the meaning of the word “love”. Through the years, I still partied – HARD – every time my son left with his father for the weekend. When my son was almost 10, his father and I agreed that he would go and live with him. This was the hardest decision of my life. Little did I know, the pain of this decision would soon be too much to handle. I became very sick from the pain of my addiction and heartache, and was told that heroin would take that away. Within 6 months I lost my job, my car and my house. I was constantly in trouble, on the run and in hiding from the police and I ALWAYS wound up getting caught. I was so sick and angry; I fell to my knees and I said out loud, “God, if you’re real, please give me a sign. I can’t do this anymore”. The next day, God sent me a sign. I dropped on my knees and started crying – shocked that God first of all existed and that He gave me – a nobody – a sign. It was then and there that I started trying – trying to do my chores, trying to do everything I was supposed to. When I finished treatment, there was a spot for me in the Genesis program at The Salvation Army Caring Place. That was almost 2 years ago. Being in this program, I now have a relationship with God, I have REAL friendships, and I’m surrounded by people who sincerely want the best for me. My son is allowed to come and visit and stay on weekends and we have a real relationship. I know who I am now in Christ.

Dirt bike champions Local teens win national motocross indoor titles By Neil Corbett sports@mapleridgenews.com
Two Maple Ridge teens became champions in indoor motocross over the weekend. The Future West Canadian Arenacross championship is a twomonth long series that raced through tracks in Armstrong, Cloverdale and wrapped up in Chilliwack last week. Jaiden Scott,13, won the Open Junior B class, and Liam Bowden, 14, took the beginner class. Scott won the Rock Star Energy nationals in Kamloops earlier this year, so his accomplishments are starting to stack up. Having had such success as a Junior B racer,
he will jump to Junior A next year. From there, only wins in the intermediate class stand between him and turning pro. He made the jump from a 100 to a 250 c.c. bike this year, which is like going from a carousel horse to a thoroughbred. He’s loving his Kawasaki 250 F, and the advantage it gives him in the critical holeshot – right off the starting line. Scott finished the prestigious series with two first-place finishes, one third and enough other high finishes to score him the most points in the series. Bowden has been riding dirt bikes since he was six years old, but this was his first year competing. Racing against adults, he surprised himself with his consistent high finishes. “He has never raced before, and just went out there and kicked butt,” said Jaiden.
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
Jaiden Scott (left) and Liam Bowden both took firsts in the Future West Canadian Arenacross Championship. Jaiden also was still in kindergarten when he got his first pocket bike. Now he’s a sponsored racer, and Holeshot Motorsports racing gives him parts, gear and graphics. He credits his father with giving him a passion for the sport.
“He taught me how to jump, and how to stick landings,” he said. “We would practice at the track every Tuesday, and go racing on weekends.” Scott’s dad Kevin started racing last year, and was the top beginner
in the series. They have created a course on the back of their property on 256th Street to practice on. Kevin said the sport is great for riders old and young, and can be as social as it is competitive. “It’s a real family-oriented sport.”

last discussed all the changes that happen in your body as you age, including bone loss, cardiovascular and flexibility changes among other systems. I would now like to focus and expand on one of them: muscle loss. Muscle loss, if left unchecked, can occur at a rate of nine per cent per decade, and since so much of your body’s function depends on muscle strength levels, it is vital to reduce muscle loss (called atrophy) in order to maintain our independence as we age. The two main causes of muscle loss are nutrition and inactivity. Some of the recent research indicates that the loss of appetite and hunger response as a result of age causes an approximate 25 per cent reduction in food intake between 40 and 70 years of age. Many vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin D) play key roles in healthy muscular and neural functioning, as well as bone health. If you suspect that you fall into this category, you should consult your family physician. Muscle contractions from exercise cause the release of muscle growth hormones. These growth factors activate specialized cells in muscle (called satellite cells), which cause protein synthesis and an increase in muscle density. Aerobic exercise and resistance exercise play a major role in the prevention of muscle innervation problems, which lead to muscle atrophy, so by exercising you can maintain the muscle mass you have, or even build muscle, and you will stimulate bone

Maitland ensured his first-place finish with a victory over Ron Laxdal’s rink of Wally Phillips, Arnie Melissen and Bob Neill on Monday before faltering to the Eric Holler crew on Wednesday. His margin
of victory was slim, but he prevailed in one of the leagues most hotly contested battles for first place with only three points separating the top five teams. Along with third Hilly Boonstra, second Svend Neilsen and lead Jock Anderson, Maitland fought off challenges from Ed Desjardins, Roger Fast, Bill Hanula and Tom Manion rinks to secure first spot over 19 games of action.

IN MEMORIAM GIFTS
Pat was born in Vancouver to Isabel and George Gopsill, a younger sister to Daphne. She attended Vancouver General Nursing school and worked as a nurse throughout her life. Pat was a devoted wife to John and a loving mother to Sylvia, Donna and Heather. She was a proud grandmother to her seven grandchildren, Marnie, Chris, Colin, Cameron, Megan, Brenden and Bethany. Pat and John were married in 1977. Pat had a dry wit and loved to tease and be teased. She will be sorely missed by John and her family. Her death leaves a hole in our hearts and our lives. A service will be held at Burkeview Chapel, 1340 Dominion Ave, Port Coquitlam, Tuesday, December 16 at 1:30 PM.
