Thriving Roots Wilderness School’s Daniella Roze, far right, with fellow adventurers who spent a month of isolation using hand made tools and clothes in Eastern Washington.
‘Rewilding’ gains foothold in Saanich New Saanich-based camp gets adults, kids back to nature Travis Paterson News staff
Most mornings start the same for Daniella Roze, who finds a place in nature to meditate on life and the day ahead. But she doesn’t need to travel far. Nature, in this instance, is the lush urban forest of Summit Park, the gem of a green belt situated beside the Summit water reservoir off Finlayson and Cook streets, a scant hike up the hill from Roze’s Fernwood home. “When people are living close to the land and community, something magical happens: that’s where I’ve met the happiest people I’ve met in my whole life.” Roze says. During the day, Roze – who spent five years of her adult life living without electricity or running water – relocates to her office, an untainted enclave of West Saanich where she launched
Thriving Roots Wilderness School in September. Thriving Roots offers shortand long-term wilderness living courses for kids eight and over and adults. An upcoming nine-week adult nature immersion is seeing strong interest, says Roze, who has spent a lifetime learning how to live off the land. She’s immersed herself for six months in West African tribal living as a 19-year-old, and more recently, spent four years in a hand-built, remote cabin in the Comox Valley without power and water. She and her fellow adventurers called themselves the Red Alders. “Gathering water and food on a daily practice brings a sense of joy and fulfillment and passion to people’s lives,” she says. “It was from my time spent in rural areas that I connected with nature and felt my life’s purpose was to share this with people, this deep connection that comes from learning how to live from the land.” The response has been stronger for the long term programs than it has for the single day events, though Roze is equally excited to
offer a Sacred Fire Workshop on Sunday, and a study of nourishing wild winter plants on Dec. 21. Roze takes pride in helping others build a “relationship with the natural world and re-connect the part of ourselves which has an innate need to be in the wilderness. … Through nature, people have an amazing capacity for healing and becoming a thriving, fuller human being,” she says. The adult nature immersion program runs on Sundays starting Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a focus on the basic skills to craft the tools and clothes necessary to survive in the wild, as well as hunting and gathering skills. Students will also visit the ocean and harvest foods there, such as seaweed and other herbal medicines, Roze says. “Wilderness schools are part of the rewilding movement that’s growing. Wilderness skills are part of community building that help us to become really alive, and fully furnishes (lesser used) parts of ourselves.” Roze also runs a weekly program for home-schooled children, just

Saanich police believe two overnight commercial break and enters in the span of two days are possibly connected. The incidents occurred Dec. 6 and Dec. 8, both took place around 5:45 a.m. and both targeted electronic goods at national retailer. The Dec. 6 break and enter left Sears Home Centre on Tolmie Avenue short $4,400 worth of Panasonic TVs and a Dyson fan/heater after someone
smashed the glass door to gain entry. On Monday night, Shoppers Drug Mart in Gorge Plaza lost $10,000 worth of of game consoles, tablet computers and other small electronics. The thieves used the same entry method of smashing the front glass door, said Sgt. Steve Eassie. “Given the similar circumstances of these two break-ins, considering the timing of events, the manner in which entry has been gained, and the type of items being taken, it’s believed that these two events may have been perpetrated by the same individuals,” Eassie said. Police are searching for two Caucasian men who
were driving a silver Ford Ranger near the scenes of the crimes. One man had a beard and both were dressed in dark clothing.
A fleet-footed criminal, wanted for outstanding warrants and prohibited driving, was arrested after a short foot pursuit with VicPD officers on Saturday morning. At approximately 3 a.m., a VicPD dog officer was patrolling the Rock Bay neighbourhood when he noticed a vehicle driving around the block repeatedly. The officer followed the vehicle and called for

hy is heart attack the number one killer in this country? Ninety-nine percent of doctors say it’s due to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries) and that cholesterol lowering drugs are the primary way to treat it. But I suggest cardiologists have closed minds and are ignoring facts that could save thousands of North Americans from coronary attack. Vitamin C is required to manufacture healthy collagen, the glue that holds coronary cells together, just like mortar is needed for bricks. Lysine, like steel rods in cement, makes collagen stronger. Two-time Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Linus Pauling reported twenty-five years ago it takes a mere 10 milligrams to prevent scurvy, but several thousand to prevent heart attack. Williams Stehbens, Professor of Anatomy at Wellington University in New Zealand, proved Pauling was right. Stebhens’ research showed that coronary arteries closest to the heart are under the greatest pressure. This causes collagen to fracture resulting in the formation of a blood clot and death.
I also believed the research of Pauling and Stehbens irrefutable. Now, the work of Dr. Bush has convinced me my decision was prudent. But to take large doses of vitamin C and lysine requires swallowing many pills daily. It’s a tall order for those who dislike swallowing one pill. So for several years I’ve been trying to find a company that would manufacture a combination of vitamin C and lysine powder. Now Medi-C Plus™ is available at health food stores and specialty pharmacies. The dosage for the Medi-C Plus combination is one flat scoop mixed with water or juice with breakfast and the evening meal. Those at greater risk should take one flat scoop three times a day.
I knew that Dr. Graveline, a physician and NASA astronaut, had twice developed transient global amnesia from taking cholesterol lowering drugs (CLD’s). I was also aware that patients have died from CLDs. Others have developed kidney, liver and muscle complications.

This column does not recommend that those taking CLDs should stop them. That is a decision that can only be made by patients and doctors. As for me – I bet my life on vitamin C and lysine! I turned 90 this year.
Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, has now proven that vitamin C can reverse atherosclerosis. Bush took retinal photographs, then started his patients on high doses of vitamin C and lysine. One year later additional pictures showed atherosclerosis had regressed in retinal arteries. Sixteen years ago following my own coronary attack, cardiologists claimed it was sheer madness for me to refuse cholesterol-lowering drugs. Instead, I decided to take high doses of vitamin C plus lysine with breakfast and the evening meal.
backup. The suspicious driver eventually got out of his car and the officer immediately recognized him as a prohibited driver. When a second officer came on scene, the suspect fled on foot before being apprehended. A 35-year-old Saanich man was arrested and charged on four outstanding warrants and for breaching his courtordered curfew. Officers also found a small quantity of methamphetamine on the suspect. Officers are recommending charges of obstructing a police officer and failing to comply with a recognizance in addition to the warrants.

B.C. Green leader decries pipeline ‘dog and pony’ show Adam Olsen, member of Saanich-based First Nation, says NEB process flawed Tim Collins Black Press
B.C. Green Party Interim Leader, Adam Olsen, testified before the National Energy Board’s (NEB) hearings Nov. 25 to discuss the expansion of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline. But, although Olsen’s testimony was applauded by the Green Party, his appearance before the hearings was as a representative of the Tsartlip First Nation in the WSÁNE´C (Saanich) territory. Born in Victoria, Olsen and his three siblings were raised on the Tsartlip First Adam Olsen. Nation in Brentwood Bay. Olsen continues to live on the property where he grew up. While Olsen said that he has concerns about the pipeline’s safety, his testimony before the NEB was limited to the concerns relevant to his intervener status and the elements of the plan that directly impacted him as a representative of his First Nation. In his testimony, Olsen emphasized the commercial and economic value of Aboriginal fisheries, which have been sustainably developed through traditional Aboriginal practices such as reef net fishing. Olsen explained that the Aboriginal legal right to carry on the fishery guaranteed by the [Douglas] treaty is unqualified. “I am directly affected [by the Kinder Morgan project] because I am part of the Douglas Treaty and the route of shipping traffic is directly over the places that we fish,” he said. Olsen said the current level of tanker traffic is already in question given the provisions of the Douglas Treaty. “Now, before they settle those concerns, they are proposing a plan that would see a vast increase in the number of tankers. They’ve violated one part of the contract and now, before they’ve resolved that issue, they want to add to the violation,” said Olsen. But some of Olsen’s greatest criticisms were directed to what he calls a “poor process.” “They removed oral cross examination
from the hearings, and by so doing they’ve undermined the whole process,” he said. Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA Andrew Weaver raised similar concerns during the hearing process earlier this year. “Look at how most of the information on the Enbridge pipeline was finally disclosed. It came from oral cross examination,” Olsen said. This is one of the first times that they’ve removed that part of the process. The strength of any evidence lies in its strength against cross examination. It’s a mechanism that should be available to all interveners.” Olsen said that when decisions like this are made it does nothing to give his people or anyone else any “The confidence in the outcome of the hearings. He said that NEB has what is really necessary is a strong an independent provincial government sponsored record of assessment of never saying environmental the project. “The NEB has a strong no.” record of never saying no,” said Olsen. “They’ll approve it with a long list of conditions and by doing so they’ll kick it back to the federal government and that’ll be it. It’s a charade. Theatre.” Olsen acknowledges that he walks a bit of a tightrope between his political party and his status as a member of a First Nation, but maintains that it is in everyone’s best interest to work out the rights of First Nations before proceeding with even more violations of the original treaty. “In the end, our issues are linked,” he said. “This process isn’t really going to calculate the grand cost. Even if you do account for the potential cost – you know, those losses of habitats, the damage to culture and tradition, the decimation of entire ways of life, I doubt you’ll put it all together.” Olsen is not alone in his concern about the process being applied to the NEB hearings. Marc Eliesen, a former board member of Suncor Energy, CEO of B.C. Hydro, Chair of Manitoba Hydro and deputy minister in several federal and provincial governments, recently withdrew from the hearing process and said the NEB was failing in its duty to provide an unbiased, transparent evaluation. “This is nothing more than a dog and pony show,” Olsen said. editor@saanichnews.com

Old schoolhouse tenant a perfect fit The pending move-in of the Hallmark Heritage Society into the remarkably intact walls of the old Craigflower schoolhouse is an applaudable partnership. How the 1854 schoolhouse – believed to be the oldest original of its kind in B.C. – has spanned three centuries without burning to the ground is anyone’s guess. But the grand plans of the Hallmark crew will certainly go a long way to breathing new life into the Saanich treasure. The society has been tracking the lifespan and history of hundreds of buildings across Greater Victoria since 1973, and while its volunteers still have months of work ahead of them, the promise of an accessible archive combined with public engagement will only strengthen their impact in the years ahead. According to the society, Hallmark’s library and archives contain rare and valuable publications, photographs and over 8,000 slides. The society also has a collection of reference books on heritage preservation and history, and they maintain documents on over 8,000 buildings in the Capital Region. Hallmark’s executive is currently awaiting word from the B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations on an application for Nominal Rent Tenure, which would allow the non-profit to operate on the Crown land without paying typical rent fees. An affirmative sponsorship decision from the province would trigger the next part in the process, which involves consultation with First Nations and other ministries and agencies to ensure there are no issues with the land being released to the applicant. Fingers crossed for Hallmark, as Craigflower schoolhouse needs exactly the type of heritage-minded stewardship the society will provide. Hallmark relies on membership dues to fund its work, so check out their website today or visit them in their current location at Ross Bay Villa, 1490 Fairfield Rd. What do you think? Be energy-conscious this holiday With urgent action required to forestall the most severe effects of climate change, and with poverty and inequality continuing, how do we celebrate Christmas? We can give fewer and useful presents, requiring less transport. We can offer time rather then things. We can avoid lavish feasts and displays. We can travel less. In the names of friends and family members, we can donate to organizations that provide essentials, including basic nutrition, to people in dire need. We can limit lighting, perhaps convincing the provincial government that Site C is unnecessary and making Christmas along the Peace merry and bright. Elizabeth Kaller Saanich
ruffled feathers and build regional consensus? Progress is needed on issues of transportation, waste management and the environment. With sewage treatment, it is not just a race to get something done before the deadline and collect provincial and federal funding. It is much more. It is a balancing act of respecting the electorate’s desire to incorporate sustainability, environmental concerns, safety and community needs at a reasonable cost. A quick solution is not a solution at all, if it doesn’t address these important electorate needs. For the last three years, the CRD establishment has refused to reconsider its approach to sewage
treatment, stalling the extention of project deadlines and refusing to renegotiate funding agreements. Instead it has chosen to use these deadlines and funding restrictions as pressure points to attempt to force forward their secondary treatment plan. But with new committee membership, isn’t it time to move away from these old habits, build consensus with the core communities, and make forward progess for the benefit of the region as a whole? Hopefully over the next four years directors can come together to stimulate change. Norma Brown Esquimalt

Hallmark initially responded to a request for proposals in June. “We are looking forward to the office space,” Johnson said. “Right now we’re hemmed into one room at the Ross Bay Villa and our files alone take up so much space, only one person can work in there.” The schoolhouse was built in 1854 by the Hudson’s Bay Company, and is believed to be the oldest standing school in B.C. It served as a school until 1911, and in 1931 the Native Sons and Daughters of B.C. turned it into a museum, which it remained, off and on, until The Land Conservancy finally backed out a few years ago. Hallmark will pay a total of $6,804 for the first year’s rent. But to secure a permanent residence, sustainability likely depends on the ability to qualify for a six-year term lease with a Nominal Rent Tenure of $1 per year, which is approved for certain classes of groups. “The application for a Nominal Rent Tenure may take some time and it is not certain. We feel we have an excellent chance of getting one,” said Johnson. Sweetening the deal is the B.C. Heritage Branch’s commitment to a series of renovations to be done before Hallmark moves in. That includes deactivating the chimneys from the grand fireplaces, as heating is currently the biggest cost of running the building, Johnson said. (Forced air was installed in the 1970s). New storm windows, lights – the ceilings remain bare as the building has been lamp lit since it was built in 1854 – and a hot water tank are also on the way, as well as some bathroom upgrades. “All of the antique furniture from the schoolhouse’s museum days has been put into storage, but you can

bet we’ll throw up pictures and interpretations,” Johnson added. “We’ll retain the windows, which would have been shipped in from England, and you can still read Rufford, Stoughbridge, on the original firebricks in the fireplace shipped from England,” said Johnson. Hallmark will happily make use of all four rooms upstairs, which consists of two larger rooms – the former teacher’s parlour and bedroom – and two boarding rooms to be converted into offices. “We have a lot of files, and people want to use our files for their research. Until now, we didn’t have room for them. Now we do,” Johnson said. To offer workshops and lectures in the main hall of Craigflower Schoolhouse, the society needs to raise money for folding chairs, and are hoping for 40 of them at $20 apiece. Hallmark’s calendar features an annual focus on memberships (they are nearing 200 members) at $25 each. Throughout the seasons, members host tables at farmers’ markets and fairs, catering to each area’s history. Hallmark also sponsors the annual Heritage Awards night for the best heritage home upgrades and sponsor the student Heritage Fair at the Royal B.C. Museum in May. reporter@saanichnews.com

Island’s cancer-fighting technology gets a boost Cancer patients at the B.C. Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre at Royal Jubilee Hospital now have access to six new linear accelerators that provide radiation therapy used to treat a variety of cancers. “The six new TrueBeam linear accelerators help place the B.C. Cancer Agency at the forefront of providing cutting-edge cancer treatment using the newest and most innovative radiation therapy equipment,” said Health Minister Terry Lake. “This technology is a perfect example of the world-class cancer care B.C. residents have access to and it will help improve the quality of life for Island patients affected by cancer.” The new linear accelerators are part of a replacement plan that will improve patient care by providing some of the most-advanced, targeted radiation therapy treatments in B.C. The plan also includes a new radiation therapy simulator and a brachytherapy suite upgrade – a form of radiotherapy where a radiation source is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment. The B.C. government provided $24.3 million in funding for project. “We appreciate the provincial government providing funding for new linear accelerators, a radiation therapy simulator and a brachytherapy suite upgrade at the Vancouver Island Centre,” said Nick Foster, interim head, B.C. Cancer Agency. “To provide the best care, it is important that the B.C. Cancer Agency keep current with new technology and treatment advances. This new equipment will help to improve health outcomes for our patients by allowing us to deliver more precise radiation treatment to patients at the Vancouver Island Centre.” Linear accelerators work by making use of high-energy x-rays to kill tumour cells. Radia-
the patient – allow for more-efficient treatment delivery and improved accuracy, ultimately resulting in better patient outcomes. Approximately 55 per cent of cancer patients in B.C. require radiation therapy as part of their treatment plan. The linear accelerators typically operate eight hours per day, treating approximately 150 patients during that time period.
Health Minister Terry Lake tion therapy is used to treat a variety of cancer types, as well as in palliative treatment to relieve symptoms. The new machines deliver radiation more precisely, and produce better images, so treatment can be modi-
fied on a daily basis to support the needs of patients. On-board imaging, which enables staff to confirm the patient’s alignment, and RapidArc - a treatment technique that delivers radiation in a 360-degree arc around

quickly. With this in mind, Hyundai has backed away from the fluid approach to a more sculpted design that shares some styling cues from the top-of-range Hyundai Genesis. The front features a squarer grille opening, edgier bumper and front chin-spoiler. The base model is fitted with the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine has and 16-inch or 17-inch alloy wheels with LED daytime running lights, halogen headlamps or HID lights on the limited trim. The performance oriented 2.0 Turbo Sport model, seen above, comes with a two-toned front spoiler, 18-inch wheels, standard HID headlamps, quad exhaust tips and a lower diffuser on the rear bumper. The top trim levels of both the 2.4L and 2.0 Sport have a blacked-out section of the front grille which signifies the car comes with adaptive cruise control and a forward collision warning system.
Drive Both the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and the 2.0L turbo have been carried over from the last model but they have been modified to produce better torque delivery and fuel economy. Hyundai has dropped the horsepower output from 198hp to 185hp in the 2.4L and limited the torque to 178hp. The 2.0L turbo also receives a horsepower drop from 274hp to 245hp and the torque drops from 268 lb.-ft to 160 lb.-ft. Hyundai claims that the torque is lower in the RPM range and the fuel consumption is improved. The experience behind the wheel of the turbo is still very invigorating but not as hectic as the last model, it delivers a more usable driving experience. Power is smooth and refined; the turbo feels like a V6 without the accompanying fuel bill.
For a safe and secure ride in snow, ice, slush or whatever the cold weather condition, the Toyo Observe GSi5 will deliver exceptional traction when you need it most. Designed and tested for our winters, it features the latest developments in sipe technology, an optimized tread pattern combined with Microbit studless tire technology you need to go. Toyo Tires – engineered for the real world.
Verdict Hyundai has done it again, delivering a very attractive car, full of features, at an attractive price. 2.4L models range from $23,999 to $32,999 in the top Limited trim. This model has most of the features found in the top 2.0L turbo but without the added power. The base 2.0L turbo starts at $30,999 and the top Ultimate model, seen here, is $34,799. Both the Limited and Ultimate get the forward collision warning system and lane departure safety features, plus they also get adaptive cruise control. For 2015, the Sonata is a big step foreword in design. The added safety features will be attractive and the constant pushing-of-the-envelope from Hyundai is welcome. The Lowdown Power: 2.4L 185hp or 2.0L Turbo with 245hp Fill-up: 9.8L/6.7L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $23.999-$34,799 zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Hello winter, my old friend By Ian Harwood
The rain and windstorms have started and it won’t be long before the temperatures start to dip. Northern BC and the Interior have already experienced the cold. At the coast, it seems every year the first snowfall creates chaos and adjusting to the conditions is a big challenge for many people. That said; driving in the winter season generally presents more problems than driving in other seasons wherever you call home. The vehicle and the driver must be prepared as well as possible to cope with these kinds of driving conditions. In winter driving, braking and stopping the vehicle, of course, cause the most difficult moments. The tires play a critical role in stopping the vehicle, and they need even more care and attention than in the other seasons. Most SUVs have a passenger car tire classification with M+S stamped on the sidewall, for Mud and Snow and are considered all-season tires. If it is not, your vehicle must be fitted with tires suitable for any type of climate, even the most severe ones. In winter the pressure of the tire must also be controlled more frequently. This is because a reduction of the outside temperature causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, accelerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a value around 1-2 PSI for each 5° C decrease in temperature. Contrary to popular opinion, a lower inflation pressure than normal does not

improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more liable to damage. Always remember that in any season and with any temperature, insufficient pressure is always the main cause of tire damage. Here is some advice to always bear in mind it is during winter driving conditions: Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions. Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the pavement. Do not use the cruise control in winter conditions. Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your brakes to deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Don't get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle. Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump them in attempting to stop. The right way is to step on the brake pedal and steer against the slide. Look further ahead in traffic than you normally do. Actions by cars and trucks will alert you more quickly to problems and give you a split second extra time to react safely. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

The 2015 Canadian Car of the Year competition moved in to its final phase with the announcement of the final fifteen “Best New” category winners by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, better known as AJAC. These category winners were chosen by 73 Canadian automotive journalists following a recently completed hands-on, five-day, backto-back evaluation drive event, known as “TestFest”, in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The testing is both detailed and a challenging process that generated 1,640 evaluation drives, approximately 106,405 data points and 500 category ballots. "TestFest is the most intensive new vehicle evaluation process on the planet," said CCOTY Co-Chair, Gary Grant. “No other organization employs such stringent testing methods to determine their car of year award winners. Data driven and Canadian expertise: that’s what makes an AJAC winner”. The 2015 Canadian Car of the Year “Best New” award winners are: City Car: Kia Soul EV Small Car (under $21k): Honda Fit

In addition, AJAC will also present 2015 awards for Best New Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Subaru were all double winners and, as usual, there were a few surprises. You can look at the voting and scoring details plus all the collected data on performance (acceleration, braking, fuel economy, etc.) on the AJAC web site (ajac.ca). You can also DBL CAB SR MODEL SHOWN look back on previous winners going all the way back to 1985, when the Volkswagen Golf (an omen perhaps?) was 2015 DBL CAB SR 4.6L SR5 Plus 4x4 Auto $37,300 MSRP includes F+PDI a winner. LEASE FROM OR FINANCE FROM A few weeks ago, I made some winner predictions for the $ % seven categories that I managed to drive all entries, while at Testfest. Three proved to be right on the mark, two were semi-monthly/40 mos. 36 mos. runner-ups, but sadly, my Toyota Camry Hybrid and ChevLIMITED MODEL SHOWN OR GET UP TO rolet Tahoe choices were completely off target. The Acura $ 2015 RAV4 FWD LE Auto $25,820 MSRP includes F+PDI RLX Hybrid was my most disappointing non-winner, as I also considered it a good candidate for overall Canadian LEASE FROM OR FINANCE FROM CASH BACK Car of the Year. The RLX is an amazing sophisticated auto$ % mobile that could yet win a new technology award. There were just two entries in all-electric City Car category semi-monthly/40 mos. 36 mos. and the Kia Soul EV was a clear winner. I’ve heard both small car victors Honda Fit and VW Golf talked about as the potential overall winner. The double wins for Subaru and Hyundai were a bit of a surprise (to some) but it was certainly nice to see Porsche recognised for two outstanding products. While I didn’t expect the Volvo V60 Polestar to eclipse Ford Mustang GT, it was certainly good to see Volvo, a company with a great history that was teetered on the brink of extinction, back in the winner’s circle. All voting for Canadian Car of the Year is done by secret ballot and the esteemed accounting firm KPMG tabulated the results.

Craigdarroch decks the halls There’s no place quite like a festive castle during the holidays. Adorned for a traditional Victorian Christmas, Craigdarroch Castle sparkles during the season with stunning decorations. The halls are not only filled with boughs of holly however, music and melodies also spread Christmas cheer. “To see Craigdarroch Castle decked out is a must-do during Victoria’s holiday season,” said John Hughes, executive director, Craigdarroch Castle. “Decorating the Castle for the Christmas season takes our staff and volunteers many hours, and the results of their efforts are remarkable.” Throughout December, Craigdarroch Castle plays host to a variety of Christmas enter-
tainment. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, adapted as a one-man play by Jason Stevens is a highlight of the season at the castle. The play will be performed in the castle dance hall on Dec. 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., and Dec. 12, 13, 17, 18 and 20 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are available in advance at Craigdarroch Castle or thecastle.ca – $20 for adults, $15 for members and students. On Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. ,the classic 1994 version of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women starring Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst and Christian Bale will be shown in the Dance Hall. The movie was filmed in and around Victoria, including scenes filmed in the castle.
Admission includes time to tour the castle, the film screening and movie snacks. Tickets are available in advance at Craigdarroch Castle or thecastle.ca – $20 for the general public, $15 for members. Craigdarroch Castle will also be the setting for a wide variety of Christmas musical performances. Music will fill the castle every weekend in December and daily from Dec. 20 to Dec. 31. Performances begin at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Children’s story time is held at 1 p.m. on the same days. Music and storytime included with admission or membership. editor@saanichnews.com

Tis’ the season of giving, and last Thursday at the Jingle Mingle gala, the giving was big. The glitzy gala held at the Fairmont Empress Hotel raised a record-breaking $905,000 to support immune therapy research at the B.C. Cancer Agency Vancouver Island Centre. The Jingle Mingle has received a lot of support in the past. Last year, it raised $602,000 and in the last seven years it has raised $2.6 million for cancer research on
Vancouver Island. Funds raised Thursday will support the infrastructure for a “clean room,” which is a highly-specialized, sterile environment for the production of T-cells. T-cells are a type of white blood cell that is a key component to the immune system and is a critical part of the immune therapy clinical trial happening at the Deeley Research Centre in Victoria. The Deeley Research Centre studies the response of the immune system before, during and after standard cancer treatments.

Families the focus at Christmas for Salvation Army Goal to make holidays special for family members of all ages Angela Cowan News staff
“A lot of people think of the younger kids, but the biggest gap that we see in toys is for teenagers up to 18 years old. They’re definitely a tricky demographic to buy for.” – Keira Schindel, Salvation Army definitely a tricky demographic to buy for.” Soft blankets, scarves or mitten sets and books are a great idea for the older age groups. The easiest way to cover off the teens is to drop off or mail gift cards to the Salvation Army’s Stan Hagen Centre for Families at 2695 Quadra St. in Victoria. “Gift cards are a good way to do a catchall,” Schindel says. “It allows teens a little more choice in what they’re looking for.” Cash donations are always welcome, as it gives the organization the funds to purchase needed supplies, such as warm socks or fresh food. Q:
A:
Is moving into a Retirement Community before Christmas a good idea? I am a financial planner and have a ‘busy family’ pushing me to encourage their Mom (my client) to move before Christmas rather than February. On one hand, I don’t feel it’s my place, yet on the other, that advice is often better ‘received’ from someone other than family. The holiday season can be bitter sweet for many seniors. Depending upon memories past, existing family, friends, sense of community, death of loved one(s), coupled with all the hype and advertising, this time of year can result in feelings of loneliness and depression. Families may be torn between commitments with work, children, grandchildren vs spending quality time visiting their parents - who may live at a distance. This often increases guilt for many children of seniors. The beauty of living in an RC, especially during the holiday season is the myriad of wonderful activities planned throughout the season. Memories are relived as residents share their traditional holidays past with peers who have gone through similar life circumstances. It’s a wonderful time of year to make new friends and new memories. The seasonal decorations, music, parties within the community, as well as outings to enjoy the lights and sounds of the season all contribute to a positive beginning in their new home - whether Christmas is a holiday/season they celebrate, or not. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and Seasons greetings! May 2015 overflow with peace of mind, good health and much happiness.

With Christmas just over two weeks away, many people are stocking up on goodies and braving crowds to get their shopping done. But for low-income families, the challenges of the holiday season can often outweigh the excitement, and that’s where the Salvation Army comes in. “Everyone has their own family traditions, but within society we usually think of that big Christmas dinner and then opening gifts,” says Keira Schindel, public relations and event co-ordinator. “Salvation Army really tries to make sure families get that, so they feel supported throughout the season.” The food drives, kettle campaigns and toy shop are the major focal points for the charitable organization. “We’re anticipating helping over 3,000 households with hampers,” Schindel says. “And we’ve already had 500 families through the toy shop.” They’re still collecting donations for the toy shop, she adds, hoping to fill in the need for older gifts. “A lot of people think of the younger kids, but the biggest gap that we see in toys is for teenagers up to 18 years old. They’re

Buyers of new condos have to face up to one reality of the market: smaller square footage. Developers have listened to their customers and what they want are high end finishes and a lower price point. That’s what they are getting – but at a cost. Realtor Jason Binab said buyers are “willing to give up on space and storage if a place feels right.” It means owners have to look at smaller alternatives to furnish their new home. “Most furniture stores now have small space options. They have had to adapt to the market or people won’t buy their furniture,” Binab said. “I don’t see us going back to building larger spaces.” So what are the options for owners? Max Furniture manager Rahim Khudabux said buyers should make sure that “pieces are multi-functional and have one, two or even three different uses.” Khudabux noted in the past buyers didn’t worry much about the actual size of furniture pieces but they are now. “Paying attention to detail, they are not buying less but they are buying differently,” he said. They are also ordering custom made furniture to fit their unit’s particular space. Condo sectionals are quite popular, a change from the traditional couch, chair and end table as a sectional adds an extra seat to a room. Condo owners need to be aware of the whole look of their space, understanding that even their use of colour can affect how spacious a room seems. Khudabux tells owners not to push their furniture up against the walls, doing so will make the room

feel full while space behind pieces gives an airier feel. He said contrasting colours will make a condo visually smaller while transitional colours will open the same space up. Even furniture fabric can affect the visual space in a room, patterns in upholstery can make a room seem smaller. Mirrors and the use of glass in
furnishings are other ways to make a room appear to be larger than it is. A lack of in-house storage space is a concern as well. Ottomans and coffee tables with built in storage are popular items for condos. The ottoman will add seating to the room too. In addition to small size, little available wall space in many condo-
minium bedrooms means no room for a dresser. This has created a new trend with residents turning to storage beds, beds with drawers built in underneath. “Probably 70 per cent of our new bed orders are for storage beds,” Khudabux said. “You can fit a lot of stuff under the bed.”

Despite a 5-2 loss to the Peninsula Panthers during the Saanich Junior Braves’ annual Pink in the Rink event, local breast cancer programs were winners, with close to $1,200 raised by Braves and their fans. The Junior Braves hit the ice four times this coming week, starting with roadtrips to Campbell River (Storm) and Kerry Park (Islanders), Friday and Sunday respectively. The Braves return home to Pearkes Arena to host the Islanders Wednesday, Dec. 17 (puck drops at 7:30 p.m.), before looking for revenge against the visiting Panthers Friday, Dec. 19 at 6:30 p.m. Saanich Minor Hockey Associtaion’s top midget Braves team netted three of a possible four points this past weekend, leading into the final weekend of league play before the Christmas break. In a back-and-forth tilt Sat-
urday against the league-leading Juan de Fuca AAA Grizzlies, Braves forward James Scott scored on a breakaway with just two seconds left to tie the game 4-4. The local boys were on the road in Campbell River Sunday, beating the Tyees 5-2, and return to face the JDF Grizzlies’ home turf, 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Q Centre. Come lend your support to the visitors! SMHA’s annual coaches game in support of the association’s “No. 1 Brave Award” is coming up Saturday, Dec. 20 on Pearkes Arena’s Gold rink. The puck drops at 7 p.m. and admission is by $2 donation – which also includes a chance at a variety of door prizes and raffles for fans in the stands. SMHA coaches and managers interested in joining the fun should email ian.g.fleetwood@gmail.com with your position, highest level of play and current SMHA team. The No. 1 Brave Award is presented each spring to a player who has faced adversity, challenge, illness or injury. A handful of Saanich high school basketball teams hit the hardwood Dec. 16. The Claremont Spartans face a strong Lambrick Park Lions squad on their home court, while St. Michaels University School
Blue Jaguars travels to Spectrum for more senior boys action. All games start at 7:30 p.m. Three Saanich senior girls teams are also in action, with the Mount Douglas Rams visiting the Reynold Roadrunners and Claremont Spartans hosting the Esquimalt Dockers for their 5:45 p.m. start. Reynolds seniors boys’ squad continues the action Friday, Dec. 18 when they visit the Vic High Totems for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. In Vancouver Island Premier League action, the Saanich/Prospect Lake U17 and U18 boys’ squads face off in the last match before the Christmas break. Girls interested in lacing up for the coming box lacrosse season are invited to a free session in the Pearkes Fieldhouse Saturday, Dec 13. Registration for the spring 2015 season will open in the new year. Girls who will be PeeWee and younger (born in or since 2004) will play from 6 to 7:30 p.m., while older girls (born before 2004) will play from 7:30 to 9 p.m. For details, contact Linda at cretney@gmail.com.
