ENDS SOON! Come join the Celebration!!

Members of the Sunshine Club Quilters are delivering a little bit of cheer to Meals on Wheels clients this Christmas season. The 20 or so members of the club work throughout the year creating colourful holiday-themed placemats

for clients to have with their meal boxes at Christmas. Last week the quilters donated 90 placemats to Dora Farrell, past-president of Meals on Wheels in Port Alberni. “Our clients really appreciate receiving these placemats with their meals,” Farrell said. The volunteer service provides meals to seniors, people who have been discharged from the hospital or those who because of a

disability are unable to cook for themselves. On occasion they have assisted families in crisis on a short-term basis. Meals on Wheels delivers around 1,000 meals per month in Port Alberni, five days a week, 52 weeks a year. This is the fourth year that the quilters have made placemats for Meals on Wheels, says Shirley Bone, who has participated in the quilting drive for all four

years. “It’s fun,” she says. The placemat project is just one of several Bone works on throughout the year, she says. She belongs to four quilting groups between Port Alberni’s Rainforest Quilters and a quilting guild in Parksville. “It’s a good way to use up our scraps (material),” said Barb Smith, a spokesperson for the Sunshine Club Quilters. Drivers needed for meal program From / A1

The quilters, who meet at Echo Centre, have a stock of extra placemats in case Meals on Wheels run out, and members have already started working on next year’s batch, Smith said. Meals on Wheels is always in need of drivers. Delivery routes are

usually about half an hour long and there are several different ones already set up. Anyone who can help out with driving, even one route, can call Meals on Wheels coordinator Janet Buchanan at 250730-0390 for more information. editor@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

A

h, it is that time again. The longer dark days and the rains have set in. The holiday season is in full dance and most look forward to a break in the everyday routines. While I don’t want to be thought of as “the Grinch”, did you know research shows that long awaited time off could actually do more harm than good? Dr. Victoria Revell, a chronobiologist at the University of Surrey in England coined the problem as ‘social jet lag’—the difference between biological time and external requirements. Social jet lag she says, is similar to jet lag and includes

indigestion, loss of appetite, difficulty concentrating, memory problems, clumsiness, feeling generally unwell, lack of energy, fatigue and irritability. Some people have negative emotions associated with the holiday. Then they add a week or two of irregular sleep/ eating patterns and all this folly sees people finding a return to January routines with lackluster. Another effect of time off is often people do not realize why they feel the way they do until they have had a break. January means feeling forced to return to a routine fraught with musts, ‘have to’s, perhaps, maybe, should, shouldn’ts and most definitely short on time/money for some truly enjoyed

activities. The return becomes overwhelming. The sum of the all this could mean a persons’ selfconfidence and self worth take a big hit. And when people are down, their relationships also take a hit. Then a painful irony comes into being: that despite being surrounded by so many people, one ends up feeling so very alone and bewildered. BUT, congratulations! Reading this article and gaining more awareness is the first step to a different January. Other ideas are: • Focus on a small number of things that can successfully completed. A major reason many people suffer when they go back into routine is

the fact they spend the majority of the time chasing their tails and talking about what they are going to do. Being immediate, hands on and done can be energizing. • Plan the next getaway. Down time is essential to keep feeling refreshed and recharged. Making plans is vital. So grab a calendar, lock in the next break, with two or three more throughout the year. This will boost optimism, build anticipation and nourish the soul during the harder days. Remember to be prepared as that coming back will be difficult. • Respect a two- to three-week window. Accept that the brain is still on holidays for the first few weeks, go easy and especially avoid making life

changing/major decisions. • Boost energy levels—have fun. Make a personal pact and perhaps include a few supportive friends to do self-care in a healthy, fun-filled way. Avoiding extreme ideas or behaviours, walk, swim, eat healthy and maintain regular sleep. Hold close a Victor Hugo quote: “Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face.” Seek help if needed. While it is not unusual to feel a little down in January, if this continues for more than a few weeks it is a good idea to speak with a doctor (GP), a health professional or a therapist/counsellor. So much more than a betrayal online A Brighter Note

I

magine being in a loving, committed long-distance relationship and your fiancé requests nude pictures. You send some because you trust him implicitly, he’s also sharing his naked images, and this is the man you’re planning a life with. Now imagine, two years later, you discover one of your private full frontal nudes displayed publicly on his Twitter account. Your business has been tagged and he has written: “This is the thief and liar who calls herself a counselor. She’s a gold digger who uses people.” The victim of this particular attack is a friend I’ll call Joan. She is the only parent and sole provider for two children that she wants to protect— hence the alias.

As horrified as she was to discover the betrayal of the man she’d been in love with for three-and-ahalf years, she wasn’t ashamed of her picture nor shocked that he posted it. He had threatened that if she didn’t comply with his demands by a certain time he would embarrass her, and after seeing an alarming new side of him since their recent breakup, she could envision him doing almost anything. Of course, there are two sides to every story, so detailing the specifics of their relationship or the subsequent

deterioration of it is insignificant. What is significant is that he publicly posted a naked picture of someone against their will with a defamatory statement. Anyone who does that should lose all credibility and respect. The man responsible for this repulsive act is a firefighter in Texas. If ever there was a group of individuals who would be aghast at his dishonourable conduct, professional heroes such as these would be it. When Joan discovered her naked photo posted to Twitter, she immediately reported

it to the social media site. An hour later he posted it a second time stating that she uses people and destroys lives. He then tried to connect with her children. Joan contacted the RCMP in West Kelowna where she lives, the police in Texas where he lives, the pastor of his church and the fire department where he works. The pastor and the fire marshal responded with a promise to investigate. After 36 hours the pictures were removed from Twitter, but his account stayed active. Joan now worries they’ll appear again within her professional circle or on revenge porn sites. She’s constantly in surveillance mode, glued to her electronics, feeling like a sitting duck. Distressed at the prospect of enraging him further, she’s terrified what could happen next from the

Wish the Alberni Valley the very best of the season!

man who texted that he didn’t care if he went to jail. “Out of fear I planned to surrender to his blackmail,” she said. “But when it came right down to it, I didn’t feel like I had a choice. I teach my children to stand up to bullies. I felt physically ill at the idea of not standing up for myself or any other woman he may do this to. It’s like giving in to a terrorist.” This was more than a betrayal for Joan. “It was an unconscionable act,” she said. “That someone would love and appreciate my body when they got what they wanted, and then use it against me when they didn’t shows an age old power dynamic of entitlement and

ownership.” And the even bigger issue for her was safety. There’s no control over where those pictures went, who saw and shared them or how they might be used. It puts her and her children at risk for stalkers, sexual predators and offenders. It could also impact her ability to provide for them. Many people will question Joan for sending him pictures in the first place. “This reaction highlights an underlying attitude of misogyny,” she said. “People shouldn’t be asking ‘Why did she?’ but ‘How could he?’ They should be appalled at his abhorrent behaviour. Friends and colleagues should find it so totally unacceptable and repugnant that

they look at him in a different light entirely. “The change in our society will come when men stand up and hold others accountable and say this is not okay. Because as women, we should be able to look, act, share, speak and exist without the inhibition that lies in wondering how any of that might be used against us.” The change will also come when people understand that she has nothing to be ashamed of. He is the criminal who sexually violated and exploited her. For more information visit EndRevengePorn.org and CyberCivilRights. org. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. The Board of Directors of the Fir Park Village/Echo Village Foundation would like to thank you for your generous donations in the past. Your contributions have enabled us to fund the following projects that have made a positive improvement in the quality of life of our residents for many years to come.

✷ ✷ ✷ ✷ ✷

Fir Park Village Window Treatment Project ($45,000). Echo Village – a portion of the main corridor flooring ($18,000), as well as new furnishings for the expanded rotunda seating area.

We would ask that if you are thinking of making a donation in 2014, to please consider pledging a portion of your Christmas giving to the Villages through the Foundation. Contributions can be earmarked for specific use at either Fir Park Village or Echo Village if desired, and all gifts will be acknowledged with a charitable tax receipt.
