Trustees vote to halt Cedar school work I CHAIRMAN SAYS school board reviewing all costs in district to help save money. BY KARL YU THE NEWS BULLETIN

Newly elected Nanaimo school district trustees will debate whether to put a moratorium on Cedar school conversion project work at their regular meeting Wednesday (Dec. 17). The school district business committee is recommending approval of a 30-day stoppage on construction and awarding of contracts in order to allow for a thorough examination. The former Cedar Community Secondary School was closed and set to be converted to an elementary school as part of a 10-year facilities plan approved by the previous board. Steve Rae, school board chairman, said the recommendation, if approved, is to take stock of where the project is at. No decision has been made on whether to reverse the previous board’s decision, he said. “We want to take a tour of the school, as well as several other schools ... and it’s basically, we’re going to be looking at the whole district,” said Rae. “This is just one of the things we’re going to be looking at. The reason it came to the top of the list is because it’s time sensitive. “There are contracts out for tender right now at that school and we wanted to put a stop on that, just for 30 days, and so we can make sure that this is the right way to spend our money.” The school district is cash strapped, Rae said, and costs, expenditures to date and student projections are among things that could be examined.

new veterans’ wall of honour at the Vancouver Island Military Museum is a visible reminder of the debt we owe to our veterans, said Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell as the project launched Friday. The Vancouver Island Military Museum formally unveiled a new wall of honour with the help of local dignitaries, which is meant to pay tribute to the service of veterans. The 264-plaque wall, on the side of the downtown facility, will be a fundraiser for the non-profit

museum and commemorates the start of the First World War 100 years ago. “This is not a memorial,” said Brian McFadden, museum vicepresident. “It’s meant to honour the service that the people gave.”

Stilwell, who helped celebrate the new wall with Nanaimo MLA Leonard Krog and Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay, congratulated the museum and its volunteers for championing the cause and giving families and the public a way to honour the service of others and remember loved ones. Krog called the initiative a wonderful thing. “In terms of its military history this nation has punched above its weight at every conflict it’s ever been involved in and those who made that sacrifice, those who offered to serve, need our thanks and our congratulations,” he said.

Supportive housing development sees first tenants inside

Stolen puppy recovered A puppy taken from Paws N Jaws pet store in Nanaimo North Town Centre has been found, alive and uninjured. According to Nanaimo RCMP, the nine-week-old Chihuahua-dachshund puppy, named hercules, was found Thursday at a home in central Nanaimo, following a tip. The puppy was returned to the store. The puppy went missing from the pet store the day before, shortly after 3:30 p.m., while a clerk was showing another puppy to a customer. while she was busy with the customer, a man asked if he could see a puppy, too, and went into the puppy display area. when the clerk returned the dog she was showing to the display kennel, she noticed one of the store’s other dogs was missing. “The investigation continues to identify a male allegedly responsible for taking hercules,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, Const. Gary O’brien, said in a press release. The suspect was described as Caucasian, 5-feet-11, slim, in his 30s, with short, dark hair. he was wearing a baseball cap and zippered jacket. if you have information on this incident, please call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www. nanaimocrimestoppers. com.

A newly opened supportive housing complex won’t have the negative effect on the area that some imagine, according to Pacifica Housing executive director Karyn French. The first tenants have moved into Uplands Walk, a multimillion-dollar, 33-unit supportive housing building in north Nanaimo. It has been three years since the B.C. government first announced the site would be part of a $34-million strategy to house Nanaimo’s mentally ill and homeless population. It was controversial then, even becoming an election issue in 2011 as groups like Concerned Citizens of Nanaimo debated the merits of housing the homeless in a residential neighbourhood. But French had sensed a turnaround last year when the project broke ground. Today, she acknowledges there’s still apprehension and concern, including about property value and increased crime. “We are seeing a little bit more negativity than I anticipated at this stage, but they [area residents] really have to see it and experience it,” said French. “People imagine it to be a lot different than what it is. It really is just another apartment building.” The Uplands Drive supportive housing apartments were finished in late November and won’t be completely full for another two or three months, according to French. The building, which reportedly came under its $7.3-million construction budget, will cost new residents $435 a month for a self-contained bachelor studio. The building also has staff 24 hours a day, amenities like a bocce ball court and focuses on life-skill development. It’s all aimed at preparing people should they be ready to move into a building without social supports. B.C. Housing will hold an official opening this January, when it will announce the total cost of the project.

Our annual Coins for Kids fundraising drive wraps up this week. Volunteers are busy collecting donations and rolling coins for deposit. From there, the money will be donated to the Great Nanaimo Toy Drive and the Nanaimo Boys and Girls Club. The annual fundraiser began in 1996 by collecting pennies. When the federal government decided to phase out the penny a few years ago, the name changed to Coins for Kids to ensure

the campaign continued. The premise is simple: make sure no child goes empty handed on Christmas morning. The toy drive and the boys and girls club are two charities in Nanaimo that help make that happen. Since 1996, the fundraiser has raised more than $160,000 for children in need in Nanaimo. Black Press papers from across the Island participate in Coins for Kids. Money raised stays within the community in which it was donated. Participating in the fundraiser is easy: just collect your spare change and drop it off at one of our community drop-off locations or the News Bulletin’s office at 777 Poplar St. The money doesn’t have to

Man injured by object thrown from pickup truck A man went to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Sunday after he was hit in the head and knocked down by something thrown from a passing pickup truck. The victim, 34, was walking to work on Shenton Road at about 10:45 p.m. when a pickup truck passed and he was hit by eggs, followed by a solid object that hit him in the head hard enough to knock him down. The victim called police and went to hospital to be checked for a suspected concussion. The items were thrown from an early ’90s two-tone, blue pickup with side steps and the person throwing the items was a Caucasian man in his late teens or early 20s with blonde hair. A woman also reported her car was hit with eggs thrown from a “jacked up” truck Saturday at about 9:30 p.m. No licence plate number was obtained in either incident. Anyone with information on these incidents, please call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www. nanaimocrimestoppers.com

The latest operating results from the City of Nanaimo s h o w s t h e Va n c o u v e r Island Conference Centre is expected to post a $102,000 deficit at the end of the year, thanks to fewer bookings and lower than anticipated revenue. Since its first full year in 2009, the centre has gone over budget three times and taxpayers have paid more than $900,000 annually in operating subsidies.

Vancouver Island University received over $66,000 in onetime funding for 12 spaces at its Community Mental Health Worker certificate program, as part of a provincewide initiative to provide additional support for short-term health education programs. “The program from this targeted funding will help VIU students gain skills and prepare for a career in a job where there is current demand,” said ParksvilleQualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell, in a press release. Being offered at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, the certificate program is recognized as a qualifica-

tion for employment for mental health worker positions within Island Health and is based on the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation. The health authority recently indicated an increasing demand for qualified mental health workers across Vancouver Island with many positions anticipated in the central Island region. Vancouver Island University is one of seven public post-secondary institutes that is receiving this one-time funding. All totalled, the provincial government is providing $1.5 million towards 188 student spaces in short-term health education.

Let’s be honest, you can have everything in the world, but if you don’t have your health, you have nothing. Health is a journey, and every journey begins with a step: one small step. One small step and you’re that much closer to your goal. Are you ready to take your first step? Let’s get started! For years, health and nutrition experts have been warning that poor eating habits and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle are leading to an obesity epidemic. Obesity carries many health risks for adults and children, including: • Coronary heart disease • Type 2 diabetes • Cancers • Hypertension • And, stroke. All major health problems that doctors agree could be helped by losing weight. The trend these days is toward eating a more well-balanced diet that may make you gain weight and may not help you lose weight. Experts say, many of these issues are related to a dysfunctional pancreas. To lose weight effectively, the pancreas must work efficiently. That is exactly what the Ideal Protein diet was designed to do! Call and book your appointment today with one of our personal weight loss coaches to find out how this will work for you. We are offering a $50 discount for all new clients if you sign up before December 31st, and get your health on track for 2015. 250-802-2111 or 250-740-3880. A man arrested for indecent exposure in late September is expected to make another appearance in Nanaimo provincial court today (Dec. 16).

Boil water advisory lifted Nanaimo’s boil water advisory has been called off. The City of Nanaimo announced Sunday that it has determined that turbidity in the water system is now within acceptable levels. A boil water advisory was issued Thursday after last week’s storms increased turbidity in the water system. According to a city press release, samples taken throughout the system indicate that there is no bacteria in the water. Residents no longer need to boil their water before drinking from the municipal supply system. “The city would like to thank the residents of Nanaimo for their patience during this week’s boil water advisory,” said Bill Sims, the city’s manager of water resources. The city recommends that residents run their faucets for one minute and drain and flush ice-making machines in refrigerators. The city also suggests changing water filters. Drugs, cash seized during police search Nanaimo Mounties have tallied up the inventory of drugs, weapons and stolen goods seized during two search warrants carried out in Harewood and Ladysmith last week. The searches happened the morning of Dec. 4 when police brought in the Vancouver Island Emergency Response Team and members of the RCMP’s clandestine lab unit to a house at 610 Harewood Rd. and a rural property on Prospect Drive in Ladysmith’s North Oyster district. The investigation at the Harewood house turned up seven grams of heroin, 100 grams of cocaine, 245 grams of crystal methamphetamine and Oxycontin pills, plus 405 millilitres of steroids, Ativan and ecstasy. Also seized were scales, baggies, cell phones and money counters. The Prospect Drive property yielded two loaded handguns with ammunition, one silencer and two crossbows, plus drugs including 400 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 650 grams of MDMA, a small quantity of crack cocaine and 250 grams of cocaine powder. A stolen Bobcat, motorcycle, snow blower, three generators and chainsaws were also seized. The RCMP bomb disposal unit was also brought in to dispose of a homemade pipe bomb in the residence. Charges are pending against two men, age 39 and 36. The 36-year-old suspect was released on a promise to appear in Nanaimo provincial court to face drugrelated charges on March 31. Police are still searching for the 39-year-old suspect. The suspects’ names will be release when charges are formally approved by Crown counsel. Five other adults were detained during the searches, but are not facing charges. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Passenger rail awaits government approval

I

iNfraStructurE caNada working through proposal. By Karl yu The News bulleTiN

There is still no timetable for when passenger rail service will return to Nanaimo, according to Island Corridor Foundation CEO Graham Bruce. While the five regional districts along the right of way, including the Regional District of Nanaimo, have committed to funding, Bruce said approval is needed from the federal and provincial governments. “The full package, the infrastructure work itself, the business plan, everything, is with Infrastructure Canada right now. It’s a huge volume and it’s been with them for [a] while, as it is with the B.C. Ministry of Transportation. “They’re doing their reviews of all of that work and once we get sign off from them, then the work can be tendered. I have no idea what the time frame is on that,” said Bruce. The Regional District of Nanaimo voted in July to carry

out a contribution agreement with the foundation. A total of $945,000 will be provided, but will be split into two payments of $472,500. A portion from 2013 was requisitioned through taxes and sits in reserve. The other portion will be part of the upcoming 2015 budget discussion. One of the conditions was the provision of an agreement with the foundation, Via Rail and other parties, which Paul Thorkelsson, regional district chief administrative officer, said has been received. “That was kind of the significant condition that was put on and included within the funding agreement that the RDN signed with the Island Corridor Foundation,” Thorkelsson said. “So that was sort of the last trigger under that agreement, which would allow funding to flow.” If approval is given and contracts are awarded, Bruce said the plan is to begin work in Victoria and head to Nanaimo, allowing for service between the two cities to start. Work would subsequently continue to Courtenay. “We are making progress. Much slower than what I had anticipated, but we are making progress,” Bruce said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Fix province’s leaky roof first

The analogy is appropriate, but it needs to be taken a step further. In a year-end interview with Black Press’ Tom Fletcher, Premier Christy Clark tried to compare her government’s finances to that of any household. Repeating the words she and her finance minister spoke earlier in the week, the premier suggested a family that rode through tough times using credit cards needs to put money on those cards when the finances improve. She was speaking of the government’s estimated $444-million surplus and her plan to put that money toward B.C.’s debt. We agree that is a prudent strategy. It is irresponsible to ignore the debt. It’s almost criminal to burden future governments and future generations with such a financial millstone. However, we don’t believe the entire $400 million needs to go to paying down the debt. Let’s continue with the premier’s fictitious family. When times are tough and you are living off credit cards, many things around the house fall into disrepair. The plumbing, the electrical, perhaps the roof. You can get by for a while without these things being fixed. They can be put off until finances improve. But when the money situation gets better, it makes sense to not only put some cash down on the credit cards, but fix the roof. A leaky and/or old roof is just going to cause more expensive problems down the road if it’s not upgraded. The B.C. government has a bunch of leaky roofs. It’s time to take a quarter, a third or even half of that $444 million to fix some of these problems around its house. When times were tougher, maybe it made sense to hike medical premiums and claw back child support payments from social assistance and disability recipients. However, we are seeing some of the results of these cuts, especially in regards to the ferry service. Sure, Premier Clark, pay down that credit card debt. But fix the roof first. NATO or the United Nations, Canada would step up to the plate. That’s all but forgotten with the current government, which seems more intent on engaging Canada in combative military action than providing humanitarian support. There will be people who say the Syrian refugee crisis isn’t Canada’s problem. However, as a founding member of the United Nations and as a nation that prides itself on immigration, inclusion and cultural diversity, it is our humanitarian duty to assist these refugees. Canada would be better off following the German model, as it would not only provide meaningful jobs for Canadians, but it would also give people with absolutely nothing a shot at everything. In fact, one doesn’t need to look far to find a refugee success story in Canada. In 1968, Michaëlle Jean arrived in Canada after fleeing Haiti. After settling in Quebec, she would go on to become an award-winning journalist and in 2005 she was appointed the 27th governor general in Canadian history, a position she held until 2010. If that isn’t reason enough to accept any number of the millions of refugees then I don’t know what is.

We are making progress. Much slower than what I had anticipated, but we are making progress.

B.C. government isn’t in the giving spirit To the Editor,

The fall session of B.C.’s legislature closed in late November, with NDP leader John Horgan condemning Premier Christy Clark’s abysmal attendance record of being present for only eight of 24 sittings. Clark immediately fired back that she was busy elsewhere. However, she made sure to attend the final day of the legislative session, coinciding with lighting up Christmas decorations; there is no way that she would miss such a photo-op. Just maybe the premier has been spending her absentee days in Northern

on loading up a huge LNG-powered sleigh. Imagine the political brownie points

for a Christmas Eve trip by Christy Claus to dole out gifts to the province’s many

underprivileged children. B.C. has the highest child poverty rate in Canada, yet Clark’s government persists in the clawback of child support from a single parent on temporary or disability assistance, equal to payments received from their child’s absent parent. This mean-spirited policy ensures that the child remains in poverty; come to think of it, when that LNG sleigh makes its way through the starry Christmas Eve night, maybe that red-suited lady at the controls should really be addressed as Christy Claws.

Re: Arts funding fair, Letters, Dec. 9. It shocks me to see ads and letters in the newspapers touting Nanaimo is “not that poor” so arts and culture should receive heaping helpings of tax dollars. Some Nanaimoites are evidently so wealthy they did not care to read the Vital Signs report which said 38 per cent of residents in our city were not earning a living wage as of 2010. Before pro-culture supporters speak of entitlement to city taxes and dictate arts enriches lives, all Nanaimoites must have a life to live first and be able to survive foremost. No money whatsoever should be spent on culture by city hall until the basic needs of all Nanaimoites are brought up to livable standards. That means focusing tax money directly on basic city services without the arts trimmings. J.C. Broderick Nanaimo

To the Editor,

Re: Arts funding fair, Letters, Dec. 9. The letter writer declares that man shall not live on bread alone, but many Nanaimo families are having a hard time doing just that, keeping a loaf of bread and other staples readily on the kitchen table.

Preference is given to letters expressing an opinion on issues of local relevance or responding to items published in the News Bulletin. To the Editor,

Re: Arts funding fair, Letters, Dec. 9. Do I read the letter correct that the writer thinks “it is unreasonable to expect that [artists] should also have time, money, energy and skills to administrate and promote their work?” The Vital Signs report clearly spells out that 17 per cent of Nanaimo lives below the poverty line and 38 per cent were not earning a living wage. Forcing these people to subsidize the theatre is wrong. Only in Nanaimo would seniors on fixed incomes, single parents with two or three children and the working poor be forced to subsidize the elite theatre attendee’s entertainment tickets. The Port Theatre claims 100,000 tickets per year. Raising the average

To the Editor,

Re: Arts funding fair, Letters, Dec. 9. Exemplifying how easy it should be for council to simply allocate taxes for the arts, the scribe to your paper incorrectly utters “Nanaimo community, as a whole, is not that poor” and declares “man shall not live on bread alone.” This cannot go without a response. Last week the Loaves and Fishes food bank appeared before council asking for funding to buy a larger building since more Nanaimo residents are starving. In the last month the society said 3,000 people needed help and in the last year 7,000 people came looking for food just to survive. Nanaimo is hardly a city whose residents are well off and can afford the finer, extra things in life. I wish the Bulletin would not publish letters from people who live outside the city tax collection base and tell the rest of us how our money should be spent.

Electrical

I have a GFCI receptacle that keeps tripping, what causes this? BEN MAZZEI GFCI receptacles are normally used where electrical circuits may accidentally come in contact with water. You most often see them in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms and outside. A GFCI checks for an imbalance between the hot and the neutral conductor. They can detect an imbalance as small as five milliamps and will trip as fast as 1/30 of a second. This normally means that there is electrical current is going to ground, which has the potential to be a dangerous situation. A GFCI can also trip if the receptacle or breaker is faulty.

Ideas for Christmas giving

How do I tell if my loved one’s snoring is a sign of a serious health condition?

The gift of sight is precious. Your DR. PAUL GENEAU loved ones will appreciate receiving vision-related presents. For example: A gift certificate for a comprehensive eye examination, or a contact lens fitting, or eyeglasses. Eye glass accessories, such as cases, sunglass clipons, cleaning cloths, screwdrivers, Sunglasses, Reading glasses. Visit our Eyeglass Gallery for help filling those Christmas Stockings. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the doctors and staff at Eyecare Nanaimo!

Snoring is the sound produced by vibration of soft tissue in the upper airway due to restricted air movement. Snoring can be a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) or, at the very least, contribute to sleep deprivation. With OSA, repetitive blockage of the airway occurs resulting in decreased oxygenation of the blood. This disorder can be linked to many significant health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and depression. The easiest way to tell if snoring is a sign of OSA is to have a sleep test done. Provincial Sleep Group offers a no charge sleep test which you can perform yourself in the comfort of your own home. We also provide effective treatment and support for a variety of Sleep disordered breathing conditions. Contact us if you would like a sleep study and assessment performed or for more information.

Naturopathic I’m worried about gaining weight this holiday season. What can I do to prevent that?

It’s the most tempting time of year; it can be hard to stay on track. I recommend staying hydrated, scheduling non-negotiable time for yourself to exercise, regifting junk food you are given, and keeping nutritional snacks handy. Stash nuts and vegetable sticks in your purse or car. Eat before you head out to your parties. Brush your teeth after so you don’t want more food. It is certainly possible to maintain the healthy progress you made earlier in the year with a little conscious attention. I can help you stay on track if you need more personal guidance. I’d be happy to help! Most naturopathic consultations and treatments are covered by extended medical plans.

If you move and the location of your original Wills changes from what is in the Registry, or of course if you do a new Will, you should definitely file a new Notice with the Wills Registry. You can file your own Notice online, you can complete a fillable pdf to print out and mail to the Registry or you can have us look after it for you for a nominal fee.

102–6551 Aulds Rd., (HSBC Bldg.) tiahw@nanaimonotary.ca www.nanaimonotary.ca

Absolutely. There are a number of different drainage options that can eliminate the accumulation of water in your yard and ensure your crawl space remains dry. A simple ditch to direct the flow of water away from the troubled spot may be the solution in some yards. In others, the installation of buried drain pipe bedded in drain rock will catch the accumulation of water and discharge it safely away before it causes damage. These systems require proper design to avoid causing drainage problems in another area of your yard. Additional waterproofing of your house foundation can be accomplished by sealing the exterior concrete with a waterproofing membrane, along with upgrading your house perimeter drains which are designed to keep the foundation dry. A properly drained yard and foundation will provide you with the assurance of staying dry. Now is the time to tackle these repairs as the rainy season is just around the corner. VI OUTDOOR offers complimentary drainage assessments and solutions for your home, yard, and business.

We had our Wills done last year and there was a Will’s Notice filed at that time with the Division of Vital TIAH M. WORKMAN Statistics, Wills Registry, indicating that we had done the Wills, the date they were signed and the location of the originals. So what happens if we move? Should there be a new Notice filed and if so, who does that?

The colder weather brings with it an increase in incidents of falls on the back, the hands and knees or the base of the DR. KAREN MATTERN spine. This can result in misalignment of the pelvic joints, the spine and the neck. Because the spine can compensate for such imbalances, once the ligaments and muscles heal, we are usually unaware that there is a residual problem. Many problems seen in adults had their origin in childhood falls on the tailbone. Murphy’s law can be applied to spinal problems as well as other aspects of life. In this version of Murphy’s law, any problem in the spine left untreated will tend to reoccur, will come back more often, will be worse each time, and will take longer to heal. Whenever you suffer a fall, have your spine checked as soon as possible. Call your chiropractor to correct spinal problems before they cause any pain or discomfort. Will a credit card company ever look at accepting a portion of what is owed rather than forcing a bankruptcy and GARETH SLOCOMBE, CA, CIRP writing off the entire amount? Credit card companies frequently accept proposals under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act in which debtor pay only a portion of what is owed by way of either a lump sum payment or a series of payments over time. The percentage accepted can be as low as 10% to 20% of the total debt. Under a consumer proposal, debts can be compromised as long as a majority of creditors vote in favour of the proposal (measured by way of one vote per dollar of claim). Recently, it appears that a few credit card companies may be accepting informal settlements to extinguish a debt. However, the amount written off is usually a much smaller percentage than under a consumer proposal and the remaining amount must be paid all at once (i.e. no extended payments). You should also be very careful to ensure that any settlement offer is in writing from the actual credit card company rather than just a verbal offer from a collection agent. Also, an arrangement such as this does not bind any other creditors as it does under a formal proposal through a trustee.

I am having a hard time hearing my friends and family during the holidays. Could I have hearing loss?

I’ve been having a really tough time finding a mattress that works for JOHN ROGERS me. In the 80’s I had a waterbed and loved it, are they still around and will it work? We still do carry waterbeds and replacement parts for them. While not popular any more they can be helpful in some situations. First off though if you’ve only been trying “no flip mattresses” that are typically found everywhere but my stores then have a read through “John’s articles” at www.johnsbedrooms.com. A waterbed has that nice penetrating heat which can be very helpful for some clients; it contours well to your body minimizing pressure points. There are quite a few pros and cons to water it would be a great idea to come in and talk to one of our sleep specialists.

JEFF CAMPBELL, RHIP

If your hearing has changed, you may find social situations over the holidays challenging. If you do have trouble hearing your family and friends, we recommend that you book a hearing evaluation as soon as you can. You may have hearing loss if: * It’s hard to hear when there are multiple conversations * You are asking people to repeat themselves often * Family or friends say your TV or radio is too loud * It’s hard to hear a person speaking from another room One in ten people actually have a degree of hearing loss. Call Connect Hearing today for a complimentary hearing evaluation and take a pair of hearing aids for a free two week trial during the holiday season. Hear the difference a pair of hearing aids can make and stay connected to the sounds that bring joy to your life.

What should be considered when choosing a granite company?

I plan to soon have all of my natural teeth extracted. Once I have my dentures, will they last for the rest of my life?

Is it true you can only refinance your house to 80% of its value now?

When choosing a granite company, ensure previous customers speak highly of their work, professionalism and customer service. When receiving quotes from companies, we recommend comparing not only price, but also quality, availability, time, customer service and slab thickness. To receive an accurate quote, simply supply your plans and choose a stone.

TED CARSON

As you know, the human body is in a constant state of change, and the mouth is no exception. Although dentures are durable, they are not any more permanent than eyeglasses. Over time, the underlying tissues of the mouth change, often causing the denture to settle out of position. This can cause a change in the fit and occlusion, as well as in your appearance. As the gums shrink, upper dentures tend to go up out of sight & move back, while lower dentures tend to settle down and come forward. Thus, some people who wear the same dentures over many years develop a “bull dog” look. As a general rule, dentures should be replaced every 5-7 years and relined every 2-3 years, in order to prevent deterioration of the tissues and bone and to maintain a healthy, natural smile. An annual professional consultation is very important and is provided at our Clinic at no charge.

The main differences between Modular and Manufactured (aka mobile homes) are construction standards, materials and foundations. Manufactured / Mobile homes are built on a steel TIM WAIT frame and are normally placed on wood blocking, concrete pillars and sometimes on metal posts. Modular homes are built with a wood floor system and are designed to go on a either a crawlspace or a basement. Modular homes are built to Canadian Standards Association CSA-A277 (Canadian National Building Code) and are built to meet BC Building Code. These Standard Specifications can include engineered floor trusses, 2 x 6 exterior walls, 8’ & 9’ ceilings and primed and painted drywall. Building structural module homes indoors, in a controlled environment, resolves many problems typical of conventional on-site building. Both materials and schedules are less vulnerable to weather conditions. Tolerances are more exact and quality more consistent. Costs are lower and prices and completion dates more reliable, as the work of specialized trades workers is more easily scheduled and coordinated. Full testing of plumbing, wiring, heating and other systems before Modules leave the factory ensures every completed structure still meets the manufacturer’s exacting CSA approved standards. Deerwood Estates is a gated community and the Modular homes were built by Retire West, a family owned company with a solid reputation earned through 25 years of planning, development and management of Modular home communities in BC. Deerwood Estates is distinguished by quality in design and construction and is a Hallmark in tasteful landscaping and attention to detail in the development of streetscapes and generous green space. Call Tim Wait, known by many as Mr. Deerwood to view his many listings in this friendly village that offers a relaxed lifestyle.

SHARON FAUCHON,

Well, you used to be able to refinance up to 95% KRISTA VERHIEL & LISA TATTON of your homes value, taking out the equity to debt consolidate, renovate, a divorce payout, make an investment or anything else you wanted. Right now you are correct max refinance is to 80% however; there are two exceptions. Also, we hope that in the future this will be increased again so continue to check back in with us! The first exception is if the funds are for renovations then we can do a refinance plus improvements. Though we still can’t go above 80% of the “after renovation value” of that home you are not capped at 80% of its current value and this warrants a discussion to explain further. The second exception is if you are buying a family member out of a home you both own. For example a divorce ad you need to pay out your soon to be ex husband or wife from the equity or a parent who co-signed for a child and now the child wants to refinance and pay the parent out or siblings….. then you can refinance to 95%. Again this warrants a discussion and you should call and start asking us questions, that’s what we are here for! We look forward to discussing your needs with you and trying to find a solution.

rom the very first moment a radio station spun an instrumental song called Music Box Dancer, everything changed for singer Frank Mills. “It did change overnight,” Mills said from his home in Vermont. Music Box Dancer instantly became a huge hit. The single received millions of spins on the radio, earned a 1980 Grammy nomination and helped launch the Quebec native into the international spotlight. On Wednesday (Dec. 17),

the three-time Juno Award winner will be performing at the Port Theatre. Following his performance in the Harbour City, Mills will head to Campbell River, Victoria and Duncan. Mills was born in Montreal in 1942 and began his music career in the late 1960s while he attended McGill University. Although Mills grew up in a musical family, his father didn’t entirely agree with him pursuing music as a career. “My dad was a businessman and my mother was a great piano player and all my uncles and aunts played instruments,” Mills said. “My dad was always very proud of

Writing circle benefits teenagers

Nanaimo nightclub flirts with new ideas There will be more room to mix and mingle with friends or complete strangers at one downtown nightclub. Koncept Nightclub is currently in the process of adding a VIP section, which will offer bottle service. Club manager Sydney Braid said the nightclub has received a high volume of requests for bottle services.

“Koncept is adding a VIP section to make birthdays and other events more special for our customers,” Braid said. “We have had many requests for bottle service and wanted to meet the demand with a high standard.” In addition to the VIP section, Koncept has started Sin Sundays, which takes place on the final Sunday of each month and features

popular electronic dance music spun by local DJs. “It’s a few local DJs that don’t play at Koncept on regular nights,” Braid said. “It allows people who work weekend nights to experience what Koncept is all about.” The club, which is located on Skinner Street, opened in September following the closure of Spice Lounge.

Every other Thursday, author Joëlle Anthony can be found hanging out with teenagers at the library. “There are benefits to hanging out with teens,” she said, laughing. “I learn a lot from them.” Since mid-November, Anthony has been leading a teen writing circle at the Gabriola Island library. The relatively new bi-weekly activity, which will run again on Thursday (Dec. 18), provides teens and tweens the opportunity to practise writing, receive feedback and share ideas. “It is a place where teens can come and write and share and also bring in things if they want,” Anthony explained. Following Grade 7, tweens and teens on Gabriola Island do not receive any creative writing courses until they reach Grade 10. Anthony said she is hoping that the new writing circle will keep kids interested in writing. “There is a gap there and a lot of kids really like to write,” she said. “I think this could keep them interested.” Anthony, who moved from Tennessee to Gabriola Island with her husband Victor in 2007, is the author of two young adult novels, Restoring Harmony and The Right and the Real. Restoring Harmony was long-listed for the American Library Association’s Best New Young Adult Fiction in 2010 and was selected for Cincinnati’s Teen on the Same Page Festival in 2012. As the leader of the writing circle, Anthony is has been able to receive feedback from the students on her own writing. “I primarily write for teens … just hanging out with teens and hearing what they think and getting to know them is useful,” she said. Anthony was born and raised in Portland, Ore., where she attended David Douglas High Make Yourself Job-Ready to

I loved high school with a passion.” After high school, Anthony became involved in theatre, comedy and has appeared in a couple of movies, including What The Bleep Do We Know? She explained that going from theatre to writing for young adults was a simple transition. “They are very much linked,” Anthony said. “Everything you learn in theatre goes to writing, from building characters to plots and dialogues.” Although the writing circle is fairly new, Anthony said she’s impressed at how open the students are to sharing their work. “It makes me realize how brave they are,” she said. NANAIMO WINS 8-2 after thirdperiod outburst.

Sport awards extend deadline

BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN

The Nanaimo Clippers wore down the Vernon Vipers and turned a close contest into a blowout. The Shipmen scored six third-period goals and slammed the Snakes 8-2 on Sunday in B.C. Hockey League action at Frank Crane Arena. “They were at the end of a road trip, so we knew if we came at them hard, they were going to give up sooner or later,” said Brett Roulston, Clippers forward. “I think that’s what we did. We pushed them all game and eventually they broke.” Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach, said the key was not to let the Vipers carry any momentum into the game. “We felt like if we were good in the first half, we might be able to take ’er over in the second half and run them out of gas a little bit and I think that’s probably how it played out,” he said. Aggressive forechecking and finishing checks, Vandekamp said, are ways to wear down an opponent. “If anything, I think it’s just a matter of not making anything easy on them,” the coach said. Nanaimo took a 2-1 lead into the third period and then scored goals 10 seconds apart early in the frame. Vernon responded right away, making it 4-2, but the Clippers kept coming. Brendan Taylor scored two goals, Anthony Rinaldi had a goal and two assists and Nick

Guerra, Nicolas Carrier, Roulston, Cole Maier and Jacob Hanlon also tallied. T.J. Dumonceaux and Riley Brandt responded for the Vipers. Guillaume Decelles made 32 saves as shots were 34-34. The Clippers were also winners on Friday night, defeating the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 5-2. Carrier scored a pair in that one, including the Teddy Bear Toss goal, Taylor also tallied twice, Nick Gushue had a goal and two assists and Decelles made 26 saves for the win. GAME ON … The Clippers have two more games before the holidays, a home-and-home series against the Cowichan Valley Capitals. The Clips host the Caps on Friday (Dec. 19) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

No scoring shortage for Shipmen The Nanaimo Clippers showed plenty of scoring punch on the weekend, even without some key guys. The Clips scored five goals in a win Friday night, then exploded for eight on Sunday afternoon. The offence wasn’t necessarily expected considering that the Clippers are missing three of their top offensive players. With Devin Brosseau and Jake Jackson already sidelined with injury, the junior A hockey club’s top goal scorer, Sheldon Rempal, made Canada West’s roster for the World Junior A Challenge this week in Kindersley, Sask. Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach, said the team has simplified its offensive game. “We’ve gotten through the adjustment of playing without people,” Vandekamp said. “I wouldn’t say it’s changed our game, but we’re probably just a little bit more focused on keeping it simple … It’s more of a straight-line game for us right now.” Brett Roulston, Clippers forward, said when a team is short-staffed, it’s

There was so much sport achievement this year in Nanaimo that it couldn’t be contained by an awards deadline. The Nanaimo sport Achievement Awards announced this week that it is extending the nomination deadline until Friday (Dec. 19). The decision was made because of last-minute interest from people wishing to submit nominations. There are 18 awards categories, including Junior Male individual Athlete of the Year, Junior Female individual Athlete of the Year, Junior Male Team Athlete of the Year and Junior Female Team Athlete of the Year. important that all lines contribute. “Whenever some of your top guys get hurt and they’re out of the lineup for an extended period of time, it’s good for other guys to step up in that role and get some more ice time,” he said. “Sometimes when you get more ice time you play better. I think that’s happened with a few of our guys. It’s a great opportunity for a lot of the boys.” sports@nanaimobulletin.com

The Nanaimo Buccaneers got up for a big game last week, but the opposition proved to be too much. The Campbell River storm beat the Bucs 7-3 Thursday at the Nanaimo ice Centre. Nanaimo led 3-1 after the first period before fading. Jordan levesque scored two goals and Carter Turnbull had a goal and an assist. The contest was the first between the teams following a major trade earlier this month. Former Buccaneers player will McNamara had a goal and four assists to lead the storm. Nanaimo’s next game is Thursday (Dec. 18), when the Oceanside Generals visit the NiC for a 7:15 p.m. faceoff.

Men’s baseball in the city has struggled with player numbers in recent years and is looking to rethink the game. “We were contemplating, why is it that there’s so many teams playing slo-pitch, and we can hardly get together a single senior men’s team?” said Jereme MacKinnon, one of the organizers of a new men’s baseball league. One of the challenges with Coal Miners baseball is the travel, MacKinnon said. If there is a fourteam house league, though, then players can play most of their ball in the city. There would then be four rosters for the Miners to draw players from to travel to a couple of tournaments each summer. He thinks there are enough interested players right now for two teams in Nanaimo and one in Duncan, so he hopes between now and ball season to find enough guys for one additional team.

High school hoops start to heat up

We look forward to contributing to the baseball community.

If there are enough players in the 30-plus range, it will open up other tournament possibilites, MacKinnon said. The Coal Miners are looking to hear from any prospective players age 19 and over. The ball season would start at the beginning of May and go until mid to late July, with one practice and one game each week. “There are lots of ball players available out there, it’s just there hasn’t been anything organized for them to play…” MacKinnon said. “We look forward to contributing to the Nanaimo and Vancouver Island baseball community by providing a good space for us dads to dust off the cleats, get fit, have some summer fun and inspire our kids to play ball for many years.” For more information, please e-mail coalminersbaseball@ gmail.com. The Coal Miners will hold league registration Jan. 17 and Jan. 24 from 1-4 p.m. each day at Kirby’s Source for Sports. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Wellington Wildcats guard Joseph Almoete, left, scores a layup against Woodlands Eagles opponents Brady Andjelkovic and Griffin Douglas during a game Saturday at Dover Bay Secondary school. Wellington won 62-43.

High school basketball season got a lot more interesting this past week as some allNanaimo matchups tipped off. The Wellington Wildcats senior AAA boys showed they’re a team to beat, knocking off the Dover Bay Dolphins and the Woodlands Eagles at a tournament at Dover Bay Secondary School. We l l i n g t o n e d g e d Dover 65-64 on Friday, then handled Woodlands 62-43 the next day. Anton Kamke led Welly with 21 points against Dover and Daniel Goodman added 14. Dover’s top scorer was Fraser Schmidt, with 15 points, and Jeff Webb with 12. The next day, Kamke was top scorer with 19 points and Goodman had 16. Woodlands was led by Zack Mackay and Jordan Cox, who scored 10 points apiece. The Barsby Blazers senior boys finished second at the Mark Isfeld Invitational in Courtenay, losing 59-53 to Kwalikum in the final. Barsby defeated Parklands 74-60 and edged Shawnigan Lake 63-62 earlier in the tourney. Look for more high school hoops next issue.
