A South Surrey mother has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the discovery Wednesday of her eightyear-old daughter’s body. Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team confirmed the charge against Lisa Deanne Batstone, 41, just after 11 a.m. the next day. Batstone’s daughter, Teagan, was found deceased in the trunk of a car in the 13900block of 35A Avenue, a cul de sac off of Crescent Road, around noon Wednesday. The distraught defendant, who was arrested at the scene, made a brief appearance in Surrey Provincial Court Thursday afternoon, where Judge Donald Gardner ordered a psychiatric assessment after a request from court-appointed defence counsel Kelly Johnston. Investigators believe the girl – a student at Rosemary Heights Elementary and Batstone’s only child – was killed elsewhere. Teagan’s father, Ottawa resident Gabe Batstone – CEO of a Vancouver-based “interactive 3D and augmented technologies” company – shared his grief on Twitter Thursday: “Life will never be the same after losing my daughter to murder… We are devastated by the loss of our beautiful Teagan. Beloved daughter, sister who deserved so much more.” He later tweeted: “Thanks for the condolences. I am unable to talk without sobbing but tomorrow I hope to share great memories of my love Teagan Erin Batstone.” He told CTV Friday that the last message he received from his ex-wife was that Teagan had the flu and wouldn’t be going to school. In the days since his daughter’s death, the

Police are appealing for witnesses and information in the wake of a weekend altercation in South Surrey that claimed the life of a 15-year-old boy. Dario Bartoli died in Peace Arch Hospital hours after he was injured in an attack early Saturday in or near Bakerview Park. “There is much rumour and speculation as to what occurred the evening Dario was killed, and for that reason we ask individuals who have information to come to police before turning to social media,” Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said Monday in a statement. Police responded to a call of a disturbance just before 3 a.m. Dec. 13, after two boys, 14 and 15 years old, fled to a home in the 15600-block of 18 Avenue, following an assault by four or five others. Police and emergency health services arrived to find Bartoli with critical injuries. Taken to nearby Peace Arch Hospital, he died just after 10 a.m. Soon after, Twitter and Facebook were inundated with comments and tributes to Bartoli, an avid skateboarding and BMX fan who attended Earl Marriott Secondary. One described Bartoli as “one of my best friends.” “Throughout the time we hung out together Dario and all his friends made me feel like I had a place where I was always welcome,” the writer states. “Dario we all love you man… You will always be remembered.” i see page A2

An autopsy scheduled for Thursday was hoped to confirm the girl’s cause of death. The results were not released by Peace Arch News’ press deadline Monday. Meanwhile, police and grief counsellors were at Rosemary Heights Elementary in South Surrey Thursday to help Teagan’s fellow students and teachers deal with the tragedy. School district spokesman Doug Strachan said a message “just to inform” was developed and shared with students in Grades 4 to 7. Information to help parents of students in Grade 3 and younger support their children was also distributed. News of Teagan’s death and the charge against her mother has shocked the Rosemary Heights community. At White Rock Baptist Church, where Teagan and her mom had attended for the past

6½ years, pastor Fay Puddicombe described the youngster as “an affectionate, vivacious little girl loved by everyone who knew her.” “We will miss her greatly,” Puddicombe told PAN, adding a memorial service will be held for Teagan at the church (1657 140 St.) at 7 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 17). Everyone is welcome to attend the child-friendly service. “We would like to find some way for kids to respond, possibly by providing paper so they can draw or write messages,” she said. One area resident told PAN that Lisa Batstone “had always been a loving, devoted mother to her daughter.” “Everyone who knows Lisa is so shocked because she was a single mom whose life revolved around Teagan in every way,” said the resident, who asked to not be identified in any way, by email. i see page A4

Civil claim ‘restricts’ what police can say about independent-investigation findings

No charges in officer-involved shooting Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

More than 10 months after a plain-clothed officer opened fire on a taxi in White Rock, RCMP officials confirm an independent investigation does not recommend charges. “The file and all investigative findings have been carefully reviewed internally… looking at all the circumstances, including policy, procedures and training,” Sgt. Rob Vermeulen said last week. “No charges have been recommended against any of the involved parties.” Citing an ongoing civil claim, Vermeulen said police are “somewhat restricted in what we can say” about the Jan. 29 incident. It occurred around noon near Peace Arch Hospital, in the 1500-block of Finlay Street.

Taxi driver Rashid Ahmad said at the time that he was en route to Semiahmoo Shopping Centre with two passengers – one of them an elderly woman – when he was cut off by an unmarked car. A shabbily dressed man got out of the car, drew a gun on the taxi and fired. Ahmad said he was then pulled out of the car, kicked in the ribs, handcuffed – and released within minutes. Police have yet to comment on Ahmad’s version of events. A statement of defence to Ahmad’s civil claim has not yet been filed. According to the claim – filed in B.C. Supreme Court July 8 against the RCMP, the attorney general of B.C. and two unnamed White Rock RCMP constables (John Doe and Jane Doe) – the incident was the result

of negligence on the part of two officers. They failed “to exercise the proper or any duty of care,” failed to follow procedures for use of a firearm in public, and their conduct “constituted an assault and battery as well as unlawful imprisonment,” the claim states. Police at the time said the takedown was part of an investigation into “a known crackshack.” According to the claim, Ahmad picked up his passengers from an address on Stevens Street, and was at the intersection of Finlay Street and Russell Avenue when an unmarked car sped past him. As Ahmad drove through the intersection “the unmarked police car stopped without warning… in front of the Plaintiff ’s taxi

and John Doe exited the unmarked police vehicle in an aggressive fashion with his weapon drawn and shot at the Plaintiff without warning,” the claim states. “Immediately thereafter John Doe and Jane Doe smashed the driver’s side window of the Plaintiff ’s taxi, dragged him out from the window and threw him on the street where he was assaulted by John Doe and Jane Doe resulting in the Plaintiff suffering injury, loss, damage and expense.” Ahmad’s injuries included a laceration to his left cheek, left temple pain with numbness, left elbow and rib-cage pain, and a bleeding nose and mouth, the claim states. He seeks health-care costs, general damages, loss of income and special damages.

Woman’s mugging confirmed

Wind damage

White Rock RCMP are investigating the armed robbery of a pedestrian. Police confirmed last week that the incident occurred on Nov. 25 at approximately 11:30 p.m., when a 57-year-old woman walking in the 15000-block of North Bluff Road was approached by three strangers, one of whom had a weapon. The trio demanded that the victim hand over personal items and a backpack she was carrying at the time, then fled on foot, police say. A woman contacted Peace Arch News, asking why the incident hadn’t been reported in the newspaper. She said she learned of the mugging from her son and she put up a notice in her building advising residents to be cautious. Last week, White Rock RCMP said the victim was not injured. While the caller to PAN said she heard the weapon produced was a knife, police would not confirm the assertion. The only description provided for the suspects is that two were male and one was a female. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 778-593-3600.

Sexual interference White Rock RCMP are also investigating a sexual incident involving a minor. According to court information online, the offence – “sexual interference of person under 16” – occurred in late September. Court-ordered bans prohibit the publication of any information that could identify the victim. Peace Arch News first learned of the alleged offence after it appeared on the schedule for Nov. 19 appearances in Surrey Provincial Court. Another appearance took place last Wednesday. Last week, police said only that the matter is still before the courts and more information would be provided “after charge approval.” – Tracy Holmes

Above, a home in Ocean Park – as well as a vehicle in the driveway – was damaged after a nearby tree fell onto it during last week’s storm. Left, powerful waves overnight Thursday caused chunks of White Rock’s East Beach waterfront to slough.

A powerful windstorm that left thousands of residents without power Friday also caused significant property damage in White Rock and South Surrey. In Ocean Park, winds – which were reported to have reached upward of 70 km/h in some areas – felled a large tree, which crashed down into the side of a home on 14A Avenue. The tree also badly damaged a vehicle, which was parked in the driveway. On Friday evening, crews were still working to clear the debris and secure the home, the front of which had been sheared off by the fallen tree. One neighbour told Peace Arch News that they were thankful no one was hurt in the incident – “It could have been a lot worse,” she said. The South Surrey neighbourhood features many large evergreen trees, and branches from many of them were piled off along the side of the road and in yards and driveways. In White Rock, powerful waves whipped up by the storm wreaked havoc on East Beach, where parts of the grassy waterfront actually sloughed into the water. City manager Dan Bottrill said part of the problem is the area’s lower elevation, along with an insufficient amount of riprap. Preventing further damage of the sort will need to be part of upcoming conversations among members of the task force charged with identifying improvements for East Beach, he said. Crews were out cleaning debris from the promenade before sunrise. Damage could also be seen to sails of boats moored at the end of the pier. While many residents who were without power saw it restored by Friday morning or early afternoon, some in South Surrey told Peace Arch News they were without power until late Friday night.

‘We’re all just struggling to comprehend’ i from page A1 Batstone has “a generous and caring personality,” and had recently started work as a special-education assistant, but had been struggling financially, the resident said. “In retrospect, I don’t think we realized just how desperate she was… We’re all just struggling to make sense – to comprehend, on some level, what has happened.” The resident described Teagan as “a bright, sweet girl.” “She was sometimes quiet but always glowing and innocent. She loved her dog and her cat – and her mom – to pieces.” A Facebook tribute posted by Tamara Glover describes Teagan as “an angel on earth and now one in heaven.” “Teagan was always a happy child, who loved her dog Bats and her cat Beans,” Glover writes. “Teagan was Lisa’s world…”

Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound speaks to media. Pound told a news conference near the scene Wednesday just before 5 p.m. that the car Teagan’s body was found in was

initially investigated as part of a minor motor-vehicle incident. Lisa Batstone last posted to her Facebook page on Dec. 7, when she changed her cover photo to one of her and Teagan ziplining and uploaded older photos of Teagan with Santa. In posts from October, she describes herself as an education assistant looking forward to Christmas. “Now time for proper packing, labelling then just shipping packages so Teagan and I can enjoy the upcoming festivities, celebrations, and beautiful loving Christmas time – feeling thankful,” Batstone writes. Earlier this year, she wrote about volunteering at the Vancouver Aquarium, where she “worked my way up to trainer…” Batstone’s next court date is scheduled for Dec. 18.

Victims’ families speak out

Surrey 6 killers sentenced Sheila Reynolds Black Press

For the third time since her 22-year-old son was murdered in her Surrey apartment building seven years ago, Eileen Mohan attempted to describe to a judge Friday the impact her child’s slaying has had on her life. In court for the sentencing of Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston, Mohan took the stand, tearfully trying to convey her devastating and lingering loss. “I want my Christopher back,” she said, sobbing. She said the bullets that killed her son shattered her family forever and she still carries great guilt that she didn’t stay home that day as planned instead of going in to work. “How was I to know that evil would walk to my doorstep?” she asked. “My heart has not forgiven me.” Haevischer and Johnston, both Red Scorpion gang members, were found guilty in October of six counts of first-degree murder each and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in relation to the execution-style mass killing in suite 1505 of the Balmoral Tower in North Surrey on Oct. 19, 2007. Although the murder convictions come with a mandatory life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years, Friday’s hearing allowed the victim’s families to provide statements and for a sentencing decision to be made on the conspiracy charge. Justice Catherine Wedge delivered her sentence that afternoon, giving Haevischer 18 years for the conspiracy charge, with double credit for time served, leaving about 4½ years remaining. Johnston received 20, leaving about eight years. The Crown has asked for a maximum sentence on the conspiracy charge. Haevischer’s defence lawyer has suggested a 10-year jail sentence, while Johnston’s recommended 15. The jail terms will be served concurrently to the automatic life sentences for the six first-degree murder convictions both men received, with no chance to apply for parole for 25 years from the date they were arrested. That means they’ll be eligible to apply for parole in about 20 years. Neither murderer chose to address the court. They smiled and shook hands with their lawyers before being led away. Two innocent victims – fireplace repairman Ed Schellenberg, 55, and Christopher Mohan, who lived with his parents

Eileen Mohan outside court. across the hall from suite 1505 – were among the victims who were fatally shot. Also killed were Corey Lal – the target of the planned hit – his brother Michael, Eddie Narong and Ryan Bartolomeo, all of whom had drug connections. In delivering her sentence, Wedge said the planned murder of one man “exploded into a horrific display of wanton violence.” The killers intended to murder a rival drug dealer, but killed the others to eliminate witnesses. Outside court, Eileen Mohan said Friday was the most difficult day yet, but she felt her son was

finally given justice. “I’m truly and tremendously grateful,” she said. Only Mohan and Jourdane Lal, sister of Corey and Michael Lal, spoke directly to the court. Others had the Crown prosecutor read statements on their behalf. Jourdane spoke of the “living nightmare” she and her family have faced. “I’m not scared of death now,” Jourdane said. “It gives me hope that one day it will end the plague of longing for their smile, their laughter and their warm hug.” Schellenberg’s wife, Lois, and daughter, Rachel, spoke of a kind and thoughtful husband and father. Lois described her husband as her best friend. Rachel said her life now is not the one she should be living. “I sit here fatherless...” she said. Jamie Bacon has also been charged in the case. Another man, Sophon Sek, is also awaiting trial – on a charge of manslaughter – in the Surrey Six killings. – with files from Vikki Hopes

Pay attention, for their sake

A

child’s death, no matter the circumstances, is by definition a tragedy. Our community suffering two deaths just days apart – one allegedly at the hands of a parent, the other from a reported earlymorning attack – is beyond comprehension. Last Wednesday, eight-year-old Teagan Batstone’s body was found in the trunk of a car that had been part of what police initially considered a minor motor-vehicle incident; her mother, 41-year-old Lisa Deanne Batstone, was arrested at the scene and charged the next day with second-degree murder. And on Saturday, news spread quickly of an altercation at 3 a.m. that claimed the life of 15-year-old Dario Bartoli just a few hours later. Teagan’s classmates and their families and teachers at Rosemary Heights Elementary are no doubt still in shock days after learning not only of her passing, but of the circumstances surrounding what became nationwide news. Dario’s classmates at Earl Marriott Secondary and in neighbouring high schools took to social media to relay their loss, their confusion and their anger. None of this is easy to read. We’re not equipped to process it. Nothing makes sense. With regard to Teagan’s death, those who knew the mother and daughter speak of a traditional bond. The mother’s Facebook page shows image after image seemingly capturing her devotion and love for her little girl. With regard to Dario’s, it seems unfathomable that someone friends describe as like family – who liked to eat fast food, blare rap music and ride a BMX – is but a memory. Yet here we are… Now, it’s up to our legal system to attempt to make some sense of these infuriating situations; to provide some sort of answer, an explanation for that which we are unable to comprehend. For now, Teagan and Dario will be remembered as children whose time with us ended all too prematurely. But we can’t stop there. We owe it to their memories – and to all children in our community who might one day be put at risk due to circumstances we can’t comprehend – to pay attention to these tragic situations and to any answers that are eventually provided. No matter how hard it is to read.

JH: I think the public is going to increasingly find affordability issues to be the challenge. We didn’t spend as much time as I had hoped to on hydro rate increases, ICBC. When the government balanced the budget, they did it by selling assets, and by increasing costs at their Crown corporations and then pulling that revenue in for budget purposes. We’re going to have to use new technologies and means of communication to better explain to people what the government’s doing to them. TF: What should happen with the agricultural land reserve? JH: I don’t think there was a groundswell of opposition to the ALR, quite the opposite in fact, and the commission has in my opinion, infinite flexibility to meet the demands of development in northern areas as well as urban centres. I’m going to make sure that (agriculture critic) Lana Popham, who as you know is fearless on this issue, is let loose on (Agriculture Minister) Norm Letnick, and we’re going to dog this issue up to the next election. Christmas memories Editor: I have attended the White Rock Playhouse’s Christmas pantomime for over 30 years with my parents, family and friends. The last two years I have now been able to share our tradition, as my children are old enough to enjoy cheering for the hero and booing the villian. This years’s rendition of Babes in the Woods did not disappoint, with a great story, singing, Christmas themes and local humour. As I looked across the seats and saw so many famillies, it was a sheer pleasure that I saw my daughter’s smiling face formulating her own Christmas memories. Thanks to all that support the White Rock Playhouse and the wonderful gift of memories the performers share with us. Corey Stock, Surrey

goes nowhere when it comes to designating real benefits for our veterans. The Harper government’s treatment of veterans has gone beyond just being shameful. It is now approaching being mean-spirited and vindictive. Not surprising that individual veterans and veterans groups have had to turn to the courts to get access to the benefits they should be entitled to. Now we find out that funds within the Ministry of Veterans Affairs allocated for veterans’ health issues have not been spent. When are we going to say enough is enough? If our government is determined to send them into

combat, then they have a moral obligation to deal with the impact on veterans and their families. Hardy Staub, White Rock

White Rock solution Editor: Re: New trestle scheduled, Nov. 18. I was not in the slightest surprised to read the article in Peace Arch News regarding the replacement of the old bridge over the little Campbell River. Earlier this year, a few days prior

to White Rock Coun. Grant Meyer meeting with BNSF in Seattle, I left material for his attention at White Rock City Hall. In it, I proposed that he might present the material to BNSF at the meeting regarding the bridge replacement. In it, I described exactly the methods described, complete with sketch as to how the old bridge would be removed and the new one replaced giving a time frame similar to that mentioned. Seems that my message got across. The replacement process was born in White Rock, not Seattle. No access road required through First Nation land, as I predicted. John Garland, White Rock

A moral obligation Editor: Our federal government is fond of designating roadways as “highway of heroes” to honour our veterans. It’s a shame that the highway

Tree concerns come too late Editor: Re: Watts’ last stand as mayor, Dec. 4. I have been needlessly concerned that the intelligence and energy of Dianne Watts would be lost to us with her resignation as our mayor. She’s now free to engage in tree planting. There is continuous employment to be had if we’re to get out of this hole we’ve dug for ourselves and reach the goal of 40 per cent tree canopy by 2058. Oops. This is but wishful thinking. A selection of Southridge arts students’ contributions to the hospice society’s ‘Celebrate-A-Life’ campaign.

Honouring lives through our art Editor: As the holiday season draws near, we are reminded of the values that characterize this special time: compassion, hope, peace and celebration. Every December, the White Rock South Surrey Hospice Society recognizes the impact they have on the bereaved through their “Celebrate-A-Life” campaign. Visitors to Semiahmoo Shopping Centre are encouraged to stop by the Celebrate-A-Life Tree, write the name of a lost loved one on a paper dove, hang it on the tree and make an optional donation to the hospice society. With a contribution of just $20 or more, you will receive a beautiful, handpainted dove ornament of their choice, decorated by local artists… and Southridge students! Art students in Grade 11 and 12 have been working diligently over the past two months on these little wooden baubles. Using professional-grade acrylic paint and high-quality finishes to complement their artistic skill, they depicted miniature patterns and scenes inspired by themes of remembrance, festivity and hope.

5’ - 7’ FRESHLY CUT TREES from

$9.97

Whether flat or 3-D, painting the doves was a highly involved process; in addition to coming up with a design, students faced the challenge of successfully rendering it on such a small ‘canvas.’ Speaking as the art steward, seeing the breathtaking results of their dedication to this project makes me so proud of Southridge’s visual-arts department. While the doves have already been sent to the fundraising team, ready to bring joy into a new home, photos of the finished products were on display at the Southridge Senior School’s annual “Evening in December” concert held last week. If you would like to pay tribute to a loved one and receive a beautiful wooden ornament painted by a Southridge student, please visit the Celebrate-A-Life stand at Semiahmoo Shopping Centre. Doves painted by South Surrey and White Rock artists will be gifted throughout the month, while Southridge doves went on display last Saturday – they can be yours with a minimum cash donation of $20. anta is getting a helping hand spreading holiday cheer this Christmas from a group of Semiahmoo Peninsula women, who will be sewing and filling “Santa sacks” for the needy. Spearheaded by former Elgin Park Secondary School sociology teacher Michele Palmer, the women – all members of a longrunning book club – were asked to participate in making and filling the sacks for the needy, and to later help distribute the bags full of much-needed items at the Front Room Shelter in Whalley on Christmas Eve. Palmer, who founded the upcoming annual Elgin Park Christmas Community Dinner a decade ago, was inspired last year by the work of fellow Surrey

resident Amanda Thomas, who has co-ordinated the collection of stockings and goodies to be given out on Christmas Eve on the Downtown Eastside. Palmer was first informed of Thomas’ work by her daughter, Tiffiny. “One of the things I started with my kids was to give them a sum of money and I’d ask them to pay it forward and then report back to me,” Palmer said. Tiffiny had heard about Thomas and decided to use her funds to pay it forward by filling stockings and giving them to the needy. “So I said, ‘I’m going to do that. I’m going to give out stockings,’” Palmer said. After bringing the idea to her enthusiastic book club – which she joined two years ago when she retired – the wheels were put in

Bicentennial set for Peace Arch Nick Greenizan Staff Reporter

Peace Arch Park will be aglow with holiday spirit on Christmas Eve – while also marking an important event in world history. On Dec. 24, the United StatesCanada Peace Anniversary Association (USCPAA) will host a celebration commemorating the bicentennial of the signing of the Treaty of Ghent. The Treaty of Ghent was signed on Christmas Eve 1814 and offi-

cially ended the War of 1812 – a two-and-a-half year conflict, part of which was fought in and around the U.S.-Canadian border in the Great Lakes region, near what is now Ontario, and along Quebec’s St. Lawrence River. The treaty established a “firm and lasting peace between the United States, Britain and Canada” according to the USCPAA. The event, which runs from 3-7 p.m., will feature music and entertainers dressed in period-

specific costumes, interpretive displays and, from 6-6:30 p.m., a candle lighting at the Peace Arch. Holiday revellers will also have the opportunity to sip hot cider and take in Christmas lighting displays. The event is free to attend, though donations to the USCPAA – a non-profit organization – are accepted and appreciated, organizers note. For more information, visit www.peacearchpark.org

Surrey falls twice to Langley, including penalty-filled affair Saturday night

Tempers flare in Eagles’ loss in Langley Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter

On a weekend in which the Surrey Eagles gave up 12 goals in two games – extending their current losing streak to three – it was the penalties that overshadowed the team’s play. Surrey fell twice to their BC Hockey League rival Langley Rivermen – losing 6-2 Saturday and 6-5 Sunday – and if the rivalry needed a boost, Saturday’s tilt at the Langley Events Centre likely did the job. Langley jumped out to a 3-1 lead after 17 minutes, with Joe Drapluk scoring the lone goal for the Eagles, but the final two minutes brought fireworks – a sign of things to come. With less than two minutes remaining in the period, Surrey’s Sam Chatterley and Langley’s Zac Mason each received minor penalties for roughing, and less than a minute later Rivermen forward Gage Torrell ran at Eagles’ netminder Christian Short, the latter in just his second game back after sitting out for weeks due to injury. Short responded with a spear – and received a double-minor penalty – while Eagles’ blue-liner Jordan Wiest was given a misconduct, and Langley’s Jacob Kearley two minutes for roughing. In the second, Surrey defenceman Latrell Charleson and Rivermen’s Domenic Masellis – a former Eagle – went at each other early, both receiving penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct just 57 seconds into the period, and both would return to the box later in the frame, too – Charleson twice. The only goal of the period came when Langley extended its lead to 4-1 on a goal from Hunter Anderson. The action came to a head in the final 20 minutes, when Langley got two powerplay goals, from Evan Anderson and Ben Butcher, the latter another former Bird. Darius Davidson scored Surrey’s lone goal of the period, with just 27 seconds remaining. By the time of Davidson’s marker, few players from either team were left on the bench, with most having been sent to the penalty box or the dressing room. Between the two teams, 41 minutes in penalties – of the minor, double-minor and major variety – were handed out in the third, along with a handful of ejections. On the Rivermen side, Torrel was assessed a major penalty and an ejection after a second goalie-interference penalty

Garrett James/BCHL photo

Surrey Eagles’ forward Sam Chatterley (right) gets into an altercation with Langley Rivermen goaltender Bo Didur – a teammate of Chatterley’s last season in Surrey – during Saturday’s game at the Langley Events Centre. – a play that sparked one of multiple melees in the period. Langley’s Butcher was also ejected in the third, as was Masellis and Eagles Cole Plotnikoff, Wiest and Spencer Meyer. Ten-minute misconducts were also handed out to six players, effectively ending their nights, as well. Sunday’s rematch was a much tamer affair, with just six minor penalties called between the two squads. Surrey took an early lead when Charleson scored a power-play marker 5:46 into the

first period, but Langley held a 2-1 lead by the intermission on goals from Butcher and yet another former Eagle, Rivermen captain Kevan Killistoff. The Eagles tied the game in the second on back-to-back goals from Ben Vikich and Davidson, but Langley’s Justin Szeto put his team back in front late in the period with a power-play goal. In the third, Surrey answered early when Vikich scored his second of the game, but Langley quickly responded with three in a row – from Butcher, Torrel and Anderson.

In the final 30 seconds, Davidson scored his second goal of the game but Surrey couldn’t get the equalizer before the final horn. Surrey is on the road tomorrow (Wednesday), in Vernon against the Vipers. On Friday, the Birds return home to host the Prince George Spruce Kings, before wrapping up their pre-Christmas schedule Sunday at home game against the Victoria Grizzlies. The Eagles resume play after Christmas with a Dec. 28 game against Chilliwack.

OBITUARIES

GIBSON, Thomas Thomas James Gibson, a gentle

man who loved his family, his golf and his dogs, died Nov 17th, 2014 in Peace Arch Hospital, White Rock, B.C., aged 95. Tom was born in County Down,

Ireland and emigrated with his family to Fort Erie, Ontario when

he was four years old. As a young man he moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario to work in the Canadian Car plant, where he met and married Eileen, another child of Irish parents. During World War II, Tom served with 436 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force in Western Canada and Burma. After the war he and Eileen

WANG, David Kuei Fang March 6, 1924 December 6, 2014 David K.F. Wang, our beloved father, went home to be with the Lord on December 6, 2014 at the age of 90. A servant of God, devoted husband, loving and courageous son, brother, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, he will be greatly missed by his family and by all who knew him. He was predeceased by his wife Maria in October 1997, and survived by his five children, Sam (Su), Ruth (Eugene), Lavinia, Richard (Melanie), Roy (Lily), 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Our sincere gratitude to all the Willow staff at the New Vista Care Home in Burnaby where Dad lived his final 3 years. A funeral service in memory of David K.F. Wang will be held on December 19, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Victory Memorial Park, 14831 28th Avenue, Surrey. In lieu of flowers, a cheque donation can be made in memory of our dad to Calvary Christian Church, 16293 104th Avenue, Surrey, BC, V4N 1Z7. Please designate donations to the Mandarin Ministry where he offered spiritual wisdom and encouragement in growing the church. Online condolences to the family may be made at www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca on the right of the page under Obituaries & Services, click on or search Wang, Kuei Fang David.

DUCHNYCZ, Sharon (nee Fuhr) Dec. 28, 1944 - Dec. 8, 2014 Loving wife, wonderful mom, amazing grandma, sister, good friend and dedicated family person, died peacefully on Monday, December 8th, surrounded by the family she so dearly loved. She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Murray, daughter Cathryn (Chris), son Michael (Kerry) and grandsons Kai and Max, whom she deeply loved. Those of us who were lucky enough to know and love her, are much better for it. A Celebration of Sharon’s life will take place on Saturday, December 20th at 2pm at the Valley View Funeral Home, Arbor Chapel, 14660 - 72nd Avenue, Surrey, BC. We wish to give our heartfelt thank you to everyone at Czorny Alzheimer’s Centre. We are also forever grateful to those at Poppy Place Cottage who cared so dearly for Sharon. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated.

settled in Thunder Bay until they

moved to White Rock in 1980. Tom was employed in Thunder Bay with the Board of Grain Commissioners until his retirement in 1978. Tom loved all sports, but especially golf and, latterly, lawn bowling. He was a natural athlete and scored a round of golf equivalent to his age until his mid-80s. Tom is survived by his wife of seventy years, Eileen, his sons Byran and Garth and his daughter Greer. He was predeceased by his son, Barry, a fellow golfer

and dear to his father’s heart. Tom also leaves six grandchildren: Kelly, Liam, Thomas, Leslie, Connor and Rory, and nine great-grandchildren. He loved them all and was loved in his turn. Over the years he also had many dogs who followed him faithfully. He always had a pocketful of treats on his walks, most recently with his grey standard poodle, Cody, so that every dog in White Rock came to know them both. Tom savoured every aspect of his life to the full and gently charmed all who knew him. He will be sorely missed.

Hunter Golden as the Demon, brushes up on his villainy with Dame Mother Hubbard (Bryce Mills), player Madeline Durning and Fairy Twinkle (Kay Ariel Lozada) in Babes in the Woods.

Give the gift of entertainment for Christmas Many shows to choose from this holiday season

T

he Peninsula is the perfect place to live for a creative soul. Whether the person on your holiday list is looking to lose themselves in one of the many plays put on by community members or looking for a way to express themselves in a new way, there is no end to the possibilities of gift ideas.

Babes in the Woods White Rock Players Club's latest pantomime, Babes in the Woods, opened Dec. 3 at Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd. This year marks not only the club's 70th season but also the 60th anniversary of the panto tradition in White Rock. The new show, directed by Lisa Pavilionis and produced by Fred Partridge, follows the

misadventures of Pip (Lionel Rust) and Squeak (Emma Harvey) in Novelbrooke, where they encounter familiar fairy tale characters Jack and Jill (YooRa Kang and McKenzie Claus), Mother Hubbard (Bryce Mills), Simple Simon (Scott Townsend), plus Duke Don Darling (Ryan Elliott), with Kay Ariel Lozada as Fairy Twinkle and Hunter Golden as the Demon. And Shenanigans, everyone's favourite pantomime giraffe, will also be on hand to add to the fun. Babes in the Wood runs until Dec. 27, with shows at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m. and also on Boxing Day. Tickets are $20, $15 (children under 12), including taxes and fees, and are available from 604-536-7535 or at www.whiterockplayers.ca

Sleeping Beauty The Christmas panto season continues at Surrey Arts Centre Dec. 19 with the traditionally British fun of Ellie King’s Sleeping Beauty, presented by the Royal Canadian Theatre Company. James King – Ellie’s son and a panto veteran from a very early age (he’s been a familiar face each year with his unique take on the Demon King) – takes over as director this year, but the concept (and the production team, including Ellie and husband Geoff as musical director) remains the same: good old -fashioned British-style fun, complete with cheerable principal ‘boy’ and principal girl, hissable villains, a daffy Dame (RCTC favourite Alan Cedargreen as Bizzy Lizzie), tons of knockabout silliness and groaner puns,

with colourful costumes and songs. Semiahmoo Peninsula players are cast in two leads this year – Melissa Paras as Princess Rosebud (the Sleeping Beauty of the title) and Erin Marshall as Fairy Snowdrop. Providing the menace are RCTC regulars Stephen Elchesen – stepping into director King’s shoes as Demon Hemlock – and his wife, Kerri Norris, as the evil Fairy Nightshade, while Prince Indigo (Andie Francis) is on hand to save the day, with assistance of Prince Basil (Jackie Bruce) Queen Floribunda (Susanne Delisimunovic) and King Grandiflora (Jeremy Glass). The show runs until Dec. 28 at the Surrey Arts Centre main stage. For tickets, call 604-5015566, or visit www.rcttheatreco.com

Handel’s Messiah The Handel Society of Music continues its tradition of presenting Handel’s Messiah – with orchestra, full chorus and soloists – this Christmas season. The performance, conducted by society artistic director Johan Louwersheimer, will be presented in South Surrey on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Church, 2250 150 St. Soloists are Nancy Washeim (soprano), Ingrid Mapson (alto), Lucas van Lierop (tenor) and Willy Miles-Grenzberg (bass). The society will also present Messiah Dec. 19 at St. Patrick’s Church, Maple Ridge. Tickets ($20, $15 seniors and students) are available at the door, or for more infori see page B4

New Years Blues Just because 'blues' is in their name, doesn't mean the White Rock Blues Society won't host a rockin' party to ring in the new year. The society will usher in 2015 to the wailing tones of Tom Lavin's legendary Powder Blues Band, Dec. 31 at the Pacific Inn Resort's Rhumba Room, 1160 King George Blvd. Now celebrating its 36th year, the Juno award-winning Vancouverbased band is renowned for its powerful mix of swing, blues, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and R & B. In addition to guitarist-leader Lavin, the current line-up includes Mike Kalanj (keyboards and vocals), Tony Marryat (bass), Vince Mai (trumpet), Jerry Cook (tenor sax) and Daryl Bennett (drums). Only 200 tickets will be sold to the $80 dance party, which does not include dinner. A limited number of pre-show dinner reservations are available, however, and champagne and party favours will be distributed just before midnight. Hotel guest rooms will be available at a discount for ticket holders. Dance party tickets are available online at Surrey Arts Centre (https:// tickets.surrey.ca) and details of dinner and hotel reservations are available by calling the hotel at 604-535-1432 or emailing sales@pacificinn.com If the person on your list is looking for a creative outlet, the Peninsula is chock-full of opportunities to get involved, have fun and meet new people.

Seasonal songs Songs of the season are to ring out from White Rock's Goggs Park Dec. 21, at a neighbourhood caroling party. Organizer Donna Passmore said anyone who is interested in adding their voice or musical-instrument talents to the group is welcome to join in.

Offering a big sound in a variety of musical styles, Pacific Showtime has been featured at many different Lower Mainland events, including show productions, concerts and private functions. The repertoire is designed to include songs and a singing style that appeal to a wide variety of music preferences, with emphasis on entertainment value, and a chance to develop singing skills while having fun and enjoying camaraderie. Getting together and enjoying a drink with friends and family is one of the best parts of the holidays. Whether you’re hosting a celebration or have been invited as a guest, it’s always nice to treat friends to a nice bottle of wine, beer – include some you’ve brewed yourself! – or spirits. If you’re hosting a holiday party and don’t want to break the budget with the alcohol, there are many options for wine under $20. Judy Baker of the Sandpiper Liquor Store, 1235 Johnston Rd., has selected a handful of wine – red, white and bubbly – that will tickle tastebuds for less than $20. For those who drink white, Baker suggests West Bank - Harmony Blend White, Matua Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand and Garland Crest. For those who prefer red, Baker recommends Tatty Road Shiraz, Garland Crest and Apothic Red. And if you’re looking for something a bit more effervescent, Baker suggests Village Theresa and Cristalino.

If you have a bigger budget to use, Baker suggests Jlor, Langfield and Hahn Pinot Noir for reds, Kim Crawford, Burrowing Owl and Chateau Ste. Michelle Chardonnay for white. For more upscale bubbly, Baker recommends Gran Codorniu Reserve Chardonnay and Kim Crawford Fizz Small. “Make sure they like wine,” Baker said about bringing a bottle for a party. “Try and find out if they like white or red, which grape or grapes, or blend of grapes, and what region or country of the world they like wine from.” If you’re purchasing a gift for your holiday host, Baker notes that Bailey’s is a great gift to spike some coffee or serve on ice. There are also light-up bottles of vodka, cinnamonflavoured Fireball to warm up with and Hennessy. Other liquor-related gifts could include colourful flasks, she added. If you’re the host, be sure to have options for guests, including some sweeter wines, like a Riesling or i see page B7

Gewurtztraminer, as well as nonalcoholic options, like sparkling juice. If you’re serving hard alcohol, be sure to have a variety of mixes available, including pop and juice. Other suggestions for throwing a great party include having lots of food out for grazing, being sure to not over serve guests, have coffee, juice, water and pop out and provide contact information for taxis and alternatives such as Operation Red Nose and Sober Girls. Over at The Brewing Experience, 3033 King George Blvd., owner Rob Fisher said it’s the perfect time to start brewing a personalized blend of wine or beer. “Since beer takes two weeks to ferment, and wine takes either four, six or eight weeks to ferment, it’s too late to make beer or wine for the Christmas season,” he said. “This business is all about time – time to plan, time to drink…” He suggested that a new customer can purchase a gift certificate for a friend who can then come into the store in the new year to make their batch of beer or wine. Before you start to brew, it’s important to know what you like – or what your friend will like. “Other than that, we will teach them everything from start to finish – educate, educate, educate,” Fisher

said. “We have 75 different beer recipes – blonds, ambers and darks – and more than 200 different wine kits to choose from.” If you’re looking for suggestions, for red wine, Fisher suggests the Apothic Red, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Zinfandel grapes, which is available in the sixand eight-week category. Fisher added that if having 30 bottles of the same wine or six to twelve dozen beers is too much, get more friends and family to join in. “Make a couple of different batches and share. Then come down to the store on bottling day and make a social function out of it,” Fisher said. “It’s only a couple of hours to work together and drink together.” And, if you balk at the pricing, Fisher reminds that the cost when you make it yourself is a fraction of what you’d pay otherwise. “If people feel it’s expensive when they see a price of $120 for beer, it’s actually only 83 cents per 355-ml bottle and $136 for wine is actually only $4.53 per 750-ml bottle of wine,” he said. Fisher noted that right now, there is an added-value promotion when you purchase a gift certificate in December. The Brewing Experience will increase the value between five to 30 per cent, depending on the certificate’s initial value.

Stuff stockings for the furry family members Fill up with treats and toys With more and more products for pets coming out each year, it’s no surprise that stockings for the four-legged family member are becoming increasingly common. So much so that Critters and Friends’ Diane

Leadouceur has prepared some useful tips for the owners who come in to fill their furbabies’ stockings. First and foremost, start with treats. With so many options to choose from, it’s a great base for Christmas stockings.

“We get these baked treats with Christmas designs that are so healthy,” Leadouceur said. “(They) have human-grade limited ingredients in them.” Other suggestions include heavy-duty i see page B11

Many natural items that can make any pet happy i from page B10

Kong toys with treat inserts which will keep your dog occupied – and satiated – for many hours. If you’re looking to fill a stocking for a feline friend, Leadouceur recommends picking out some healthy, local catnip, which can turn any boring cat toy into hours of fun. A general rule is to focus on natural gifts, Leadouceur said. One example would be a yak milk bone made from yak milk from the Himalayas. “Hardened, it’s a treat that lasts most dogs

weeks before they can chew it up,” she said, noting that naturally shed deer and elk antlers are also good options. And shopping for locally-made items should extend to your pets as well. Leadouceur said there are a number of Canadianmade items that are making a comeback in stores. “(They are) made out of recycled material and made to last,” she said. “There are also leashes and collars that are made out of recycled tires – an amazing product that never

smells bad, are easy to wash and come in very attractive designs.” The brand – Recycle Dog – has a line of dog toys durable enough for the big chewers, too. For more seasonable items, Leadouceur suggests taking a look at squeaker mats that feature holiday figures like Santa Claus or a gingerbread man. Most importantly, Leadouceur reminds pet owners that the festivities can cause stress. “Be sure to give them extra attention. Don’t forget about them during all the (holiday) business,” she said.

As the holidays approach, it’s time to give thought to how you’re going to stuff those stockings hanging from the fireplace. Many Semiahmoo Peninsula stores have that perfect little something to put in a stocking that will bring a smile to your friend or family member’s face. Kerry Vanderzalm of Art Knapp’s said the store is full of gift ideas – whether you’re shopping for a gardener or a collector. For an early present, Vanderzalm suggests a special Christmas tree ornament to mark a milestone. “A first Christmas together or baby’s first Christmas are popular ideas,” he said. “They make great gifts for teachers, as well.” For the gardener in your life, a good pair of pruning sheers are a great idea. “The top of the line being Felco brand pruners from Switzerland,” he said. “They are highly prized by professionals and serious gardeners alike.” On the theme of gardens, if you have a stocking large enough, Vanderzalm recommends taking a look at bird feeders and houses. If there is a train lover on your list, take a look at the selection of G-scale model trains – suitable for all-weather operation in the garden

Many unique gifts to fill all your stockings.

and for avid collectors, Vanderzalm suggests taking a peek at the Department 56 ceramic village pieces. Other stocking stuffers that can be found at Art Knapps include beer and wine accessories, humourous and neon signs for the bar or the man cave, a huge variety of hot sauces, the ever-popular Elf on the Shelf and of course, a huge selection of fashion. “Our ladies fashion department is second-to-none for great ideas,” Vanderzalm said.

Give them a gift they’ll have to hear to believe Discover an unforgettable audio experience With so much new technology coming out seemingly each week, it can be hard to know which would make the perfect present to slide under the tree. Bryan Ayres of Ayreborn Audio Video Inc., 9-3033 King George Blvd., has helped narrow down the list with some suggestions that will be sure to please. For the music fan on your list, Ayres suggests the Cambridge Audio Bluetooth speaker Minx Go version two, which instantly streams music from their phone, tablet or computer, using the latest Bluetooth technology. “Don’t let its size fool you. Minx Go packs enough power to fill your room with deep, crisp and immersive quality,” Ayres said. The small size also makes it great for travel. Ayres also recommends Kanto YU2 Powered Computer speakers which are “designed to deliver bold, crisp sound” to a desktop computer. “It outputs 25W RMS per channel and delivers a surprisingly big sound – capable of filling an entire room,” Ayres said. The locally designed computer speakers are available in 10 colour options and feature smooth matte and piano gloss finishes. For a more personal audio experience, Ayres suggests shoppers take a look at the Focal Spirit One S headphones.

“Spirit One are sleek and upscale high-fidelity headphones,” Ayres said. He noted that the snug, lightweight and mobile headphones offer a “signature and sound performance.” The Spirit One headphones also come with an iPhone/iPod/iPad remote control and a rigid carrying case and soft carrying bag. A very popular gift in the store for music players has to be the Sonos multi-room music system, Ayres said. The price point starts at $219 and goes up to $749 for the Sonos music players, which feature simple set up and the ability to control from anywhere with your smartphone, tablet or computer. If shoppers are on the hunt for a deal, for a limited time, Ayreborn is packaging together the Cambridge Audio Minx Xi Network audio player and the matching XL bookshelf speakers, as well as speaker cables for $999. But if it’s something extravagant that will fit the bill, Ayres suggests the Naim wireless music-streaming system, Mu-so. The first wireless music system from Naim, Mu-so is finely tuned by specialist engineers in England. “It’s powerful audio brain delivers the most exceptional quality in sound, commanding 450 watts of power through six custom-designed speakers to create an experience that has to be heard to be believed,” he said.

For the person who has everything, why not donate in their honour to a person or organization in need. There is no lack of worthy charitable groups on the Semiahmoo Peninsula who could use a financial boost this time of the year. Sources Community Resource Centres provide many services for people of all walks of life and during the holidays, volunteers distribute Christmas hampers to the needy and provide meals at the annual Christmas Day Dinner. Throughout the year, the tireless volunteers drive those in need to medical appointments, grocery shop for those who are housebound and prepare tax returns. The many arms of Sources – include the food bank, the employment resource centre and the counselling/addictions and employment-assistance program – all require support. To donate, visit www.canadahelps. org/en/charities/pacs-foundation/ Peninsula resident Michele Palmer – founder of the Elgin Park Secondary Community Christmas Dinner – will be supporting the Front Room Shelter in Whalley this year by sewing and stuffing “Santa Sacks” for the needy. Inspired by the work of Surrey resident Amanda Thomas, who

Many Peninsula organizations that need help to grow i from page B20

and provide bursaries for community service – among other things. Volunteers with the organization have raised $2 million for the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters Association’s Burn unit, $1 million for the Surrey Memorial Children’s Health Centre, $300,000 for the YMCA and $200,000 for the Centre for Child Development, among other achievements. The Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary has supported the Peace Arch Hospital for decades through countless fundraisers and the popular Superfluity Shop, 15521 Russell Ave. The treasure trove of items is perfect to find a unique gift – with a wide variety of items from clothing, hardware, furniture, china, jewelry, books and more – while still donating to a local cause. Over the years, the auxiliary has raised funds to purchase a $1 million MRI machine, donated $1 million to the hospital’s maternity renovation and, in 2012, raised $160,000 to purchase a green-light laser, usd to reduce an enlarged prostate. For more information on the work the group does, visit www.pahas.ca

Closer to home, the Peace Arch News Christmas Fund returns. Funds donated are used to purchase gift certificates for the Sources’ White Rock/South Surrey Food Bank in December. Over the past decade, the fund has raised more than $230,000. For the animal lover in your life, The BCSPCA is a great place to donate in lieu of gifts. Currently, the society’s priority is the Biscuit Fund for Medical Care, which provides medical care and rehabilitaton for homeless and wild animals. Donators can choose from joining the monthly giving program or give a single-gift donation. The Semiahmoo Animal League is another animalfocused charity that requires support. The South Surrey-based group utilizes animalassisted and horticultural activities to help abused and neglected children heal emotionally from trauama while giving abused and neglected animals a home. To donate, visit www. canadahelps.org/en/ charities/sali-semiahmooanimal-league/ These few groups are just scratching the surface of organizations who help others that could use a boost.

If you have a foodie that you need to cross off your shopping list this holiday season, have no fear. The Semiahmoo Peninsula is full of great gift ideas that will be sure to please the master chef in your life. Brent Bondarenko of Kitchen Therapy in Grandview Corners has broken down gift ideas for any budget, including stocking stuffers. For a small – but useful – gift, Bondarenko suggsets looking at the Lekue citrus spray ($20.99) which can be used to flavour soft drinks, season salads, seafoods or stirfrys. Other suggestions under $30 include the Rice Cube ($20), the Dumpling Cube ($25.99), the Chef’n zipstrip, which easily strips, collects and measures herbs ($10) and the Tea Forte line of teas, available in both loose leaf and bagged ($12.49-$29.99) and comes with Oprah’s seal of approval. Other great kitchen gadgets Kitchen Therapy has under $30 include microplanes ($12.99-29.99) and Kitchen Innovations Garlic Perfection ($12.99), which makes it fast and easy to slice, dice or grate garlic, and store leftover cloves for later. Bondarenko also recommends taking a peek at the Charles Viancin silicon drink and food covers or the Quench cocktail tools. To help quench the thirst of a loved

one, the Zoku slush and shake maker ($26.49) is a great gift, or perhaps the Zoku quick pop maker ($79.99). If it’s a ready-made gift package you’re on the hunt for, the Bodum 70th anniversary tea press or the coffee press both come in a variety of colours with two glass mugs and two spoons, conveniently gift-boxed. If money is no object and you’re looking to impress, Bondarenko can guide you in the right direction. For the true coffee lover, the Breville Oracle Espresso ($2,300) is the perfect present to find under the tree or, for something a little less pricey, Caffitaly coffee machines ($149.99249.99) are a great buy, and pods for the machine can be bought at Kitchen Therapy. What better tool to start a diet with after the holiday feasting than the handy and powerful Vitamix blender ($559-829.99), which comes in onyx, ruby and brushed stainless steel finishes. For the ultimate foodie, a sous vide machine ($139.99-549.99) is a great kitchen tool to unwrap. Finally, for unique gift ideas, Bondarenko suggests looking at items from New York designer Michael Aram, South African designer Carrol Boyes, or Beatrix Ball items – which are handmade in Mexico.
