The $20-million Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre Replacement Project created 2,596 square metres of new space at the site, replacing the former 1949 hospital structure. Renovations were also made to over 700 square metres of existing space.” The Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre in-
cludes 23 acute care beds and 84 continuing care beds. As of March of this year, 272 individuals worked at the site—this includes both full and part time staff.

Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre is alive and well A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing. I’m not sure where I heard or read this, but, in my lifetime, especially in my career as a journalist, I have found this to be surprisingly true. And it happens all the time. People read articles that lay out facts, carefully researched and painstakingly checked and rechecked, but often the reader does not only read what is written. They read between the lines, and, in a split second, faster than the speed of light, they form their own opinion. Hence, an article that was published in the Edmonton Journal regarding Treena Mielke the Rimbey Hospital sent On The Other Side people adrift on a huge wave of panic. The public, in a mob mentality, no doubt sparked by the Journal’s publication, and further fanned into flame by social media, were convinced a decision had been made. The hospital was closing. I was enjoying a quiet Sunday evening at home after a long week, when my cell phone suddenly began buzzing incessantly like cell phones do when a text is coming in. “Did you know the Rimbey hospital is closing?” the text message shouted. Fortunately, I had already read the article and formed my own opinion. Also, I knew council was discussing the issue, Monday. But by Monday, the news was on the streets, except, as so often happens in these situations, it was not news at all. It was a rumour. In short, people panicked. And in my opinion, they read what wasn’t really there. They read between the lines.
In a letter to several editors in the area, myself included, Margo Goodhand, editor of the Edmonton Journal, pointed out the Journal’s recommendations, though controversial, were presented as ideas to produce a better and more effective health system for taxpayers’ dollars. I believe Goodhand’s reply to be intelligent, unbiased and factual. She said the series actually began Dec. 1 and was based on public reports, Alberta Health Services Statistics and government documents obtained through access to information requests. “This is not an exact science, but we did the best we could with the data we had. The point of the story was to get a needed discussion going in this province that the politicians don’t seem to want to have and haven’t for decades,” she said. To me, that makes sense. And, realistically, the Journal achieved just that. This week, the Rimbey Review is full of letters, press releases and quickly penned together opinions
from politicians who quickly used the written word to clearly mark their turf around the brick and mortar walls of the town’s beloved hospital. As editor, I am in favour of allowing each and every politician to have their say and come up with their own unique, picturesque quotes about how important it is to save our hospital. I say, good for them, but, on the other hand, I believe they are using this article to further nail the planks of their political platform more firmly into place and using the opportunity to jump on a bandwagon made up mostly of emotion. The public needs to remember the real issue at hand, and arm themselves with facts. Presently, one fact seems crystal clear. The Rimbey Hospital & Care Centre is very much alive and well. And, at least for today, there are no plans in the works to change that scenario. No one, however, can predict the future. And that, unfortunately, is another fact!
Why Canadian hospitals outperform US hospitals By Steffie Woolhandler and David Himmelstein Expert Advisors EvidenceNetwork.ca NEW YORK/ Troy Media/ - In many countries, bereaved families get condolence cards and flowers. In the U.S., the survivors are also deluged with hospital bills and insurance paperwork. That paperwork isn’t merely an insult. It costs U.S. society a fortune. Take hospitals, for instance. According to research we recently published in Health Affairs, U.S. hospitals spent $215 billion in 2011 on billing and administration, a striking 1.43 per cent of GDP. Put another way, about $1 of every $4 of U.S. hospital spending goes to bureaucracy rather than patient care. Other countries manage modern, first-rate hospital systems for far less. While administration devoured $667 per capita annually in the U.S., we found that Canada spent only $158, Scotland $164, England $225 and the Netherlands $325. If U.S. hospitals ran as efficiently as Canada’s, the average U.S. family of four would save $2,000 annually on healthcare. Moreover, U.S. hospital paperwork costs have risen sharply since 2000, even after adjusting for inflation. In contrast, administration’s share of hospital budgets in Canada has actually fallen since
1999. A generation ago, it took just one or two managers to run a U.S. hospital. Now, the CEO has been joined by “chief officers” for operations, finance, compliance, information, quality management, and more. Each chief commands his/her own legions - hundreds of billing and registration clerks, referral managers, upcoding specialists (to translate doctors’ diagnoses into the most profitable billing codes), and massive IT departments whose first commandment is “get the bill right.” Why are U.S. hospitals so inefficient? Our multiple-payer insurance system forces every hospital to negotiate rates with dozens of insurance plans, each with its own coverage rules, billing procedures and documentation requirements. And each hospital must collect deductibles, co-payments and co-insurance from tens of thousands of patients. In contrast, Canada and Scotland - where bureaucratic costs are lowest - have single-payer systems that reject this kind of red tape and the need to bill for every Band-Aid. They pay hospitals simple lump-sum budgets, the way we fund local fire stations. And like fire departments, their hospitals don’t need to collect from each victim of misfortune. But the complexity of hospital billing isn’t the only thing driving bureaucracy.
Hospitals have been forced to add layers of business expertise in order to survive in our market-driven system. A hospital that doesn’t show an operating profit can’t fund essential new investments in new equipment and cutting-edge services, or modern buildings. That means administrators have to devote resources to financial gaming like marketing lucrative services (e.g. sports medicine); billing units to squeeze every penny from insurers and patients; and strategies to recruit profitable (wellinsured) patients, and avoid unprofitable (e.g. uninsured) ones. The dismal record of for-profit hospitals illustrates the problem with running hospitals as businesses. The for-profits have higher death rates and employ fewer clinical personnel like nurses than their non-profit counterparts. But care at for-profits actually costs more, and they spend much more on the bureaucracy, a reflection of the high cost of implementing shrewd financial strategies. Canadian and Scottish hospital administrators don’t have to play financial games to assure their survival. Government grants - rather than operating profits - pay for new buildings and equipment. Even in France and Germany, where hospitals bill multiple payers, bureaucratic costs are modest because government directly funds most hospital investments. England and the Netherlands provide
unfortunate counter-examples. Pro-market reforms initiated during the Thatcher era have driven English hospital administrative costs sharply higher. And only U.S. hospitals have higher administrative costs than those in the Netherlands, where radical market-oriented reforms now pressure hospitals to show a profit. Economics textbooks hold that subjecting medicine to market forces will stimulate efficiency and root out waste. But reality stubbornly refuses to obey. In healthcare, market-oriented policies encourage hospitals to shift resources to business strategies that boost the bottom line, but contribute nothing to care. Mayor responds to special investigation article published in the Edmonton Journal about closure of Rimbey hospital Dear Editor, This is in response to the article (referred to as a “special investigation) which appeared in the Friday, December 5, 2014 edition of the Edmonton Journal entitled “Four Steps to a Better Hospital System”. In the article nine “rural” hospitals are identified as ones which the author believes should be closed by government, one of which is the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre. The summary regarding the Rimbey Hospital is filled with inaccuracies and misleading information which needs immediate clarification. These are: 1. Year built – reported as 1982 when, in fact, the acute care unit of the hospital was completed in 2008. It is state-of-the art and is highly functional with essential equipment. 2. Number of beds – reported as 23. In fact this is only the number of acute care beds. The facility also includes two family-centered
care rooms, 12 emergency beds and 84 continuing care beds. It is misleading to report 272 staff and only report the 23 beds. The 272 staff collectively covers 119 beds. 3. Maternity Service – The article states “Rimbey is one of the few rural sites that is still delivering babies, though it’s unclear why. The hospital can’t have that many deliveries each year…”. The article goes on to base this statement on the fact that the New Year’s baby was born on January 20. In fact, there around 60 deliveries per year, and this figure is increasing due to there being two additional physicians in the community and that water births are offered. Perhaps rather than asking “why” something is, a more responsible journalistic practice would be to find out the “why”. In this case, there is a very good reason “why” and that reason demonstrates one of many reasons why this facility is so valuable to Rimbey and surrounding area.
A REAL SENSE OF WONDER
4. The deferred maintenance referenced in the article is for the replacement of the original 45 beds in the Long Term Care. It is not for the acute care portion of the hospital which, again as noted, was completed in 2008. 5. What constitutes “close” in the statement “Rimbey has a number of other hospitals close by..” is certainly a matter of opinion. In our opinion, 48 km is not “close” and certainly doesn’t seem very close to anyone in an emergency situation, we’re sure. 6. Political affiliation – The article lists the fact that Rimbey “went Wildrose last election” as a “complicating factor”. Political affiliation, we believe, is not relevant to a discussion about rural hospital utilization. Factual inaccuracies, selective information
dissemination, misleading statements and appleto-oranges comparisons characterize this so-called work of “journalism”. We firmly believe a correction is in order from the Journal. To refer to this series as an “investigation” is a serious misuse of the word as, in our opinion, this word implies something much more thorough, accurate and factually based than the article provided, especially when it makes conclusions like there are few births because the New Year’s baby didn’t come until later January. Man avoids spike belt, hits the ditch By Advocate Staff Three different Central Alberta RCMP detachments chased after and arrested a Red Deer man. The 31-year-old suspect was reported to have been attempting to steal a snowmobile when he pointed a hand gun at the vehicle’s owner. The suspect then fled the scene in a different vehicle. Sylvan Lake RCMP were first called to the Friday afternoon break and enter and attempted robbery. The snowmobile’s owner followed the suspect at a safe distance and directed police officers to the area where the suspect was. Police responded to the area of Rainy Creek Road near Hwy. 20, where it was reported the suspect was fleeing east. Police picked up the vehicle in Bentley where two occupants fled from the vehicle on foot. Officers chased after the suspects on foot in the town. Unfortunately, one of the suspects was able to return to the vehicle and take off from the area. Police initiated a pursuit eastbound on Hwy. 12 outside of Bentley. During the chase, police said the suspect attempted to ram the lead police vehicle by backing up at a high rate of speed towards the vehicle. This proved unsuccessful. The pursuit continued east on Hwy. 12 where a spike belt was placed. The suspect attempted to avoid the belt, but ended up getting stuck in the snowy ditch.
Christopher Stephen Wales, 31, was then arrested. Police said they found a small semi-automatic weapon in the vehicle, within easy reach of the driver. Wales has been charged with pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon
for the purpose of committing a offence, theft over $5,000, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, assault, assault with a weapon, break and enter, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and possession of
a controlled substance. Wales has been remanded into custody and will make his first court appearance Tuesday in Red Deer provincial court.

RED DEER – Due to a sustained increase in the number of cases of whooping cough (pertussis) confirmed in the Central Zone of Alberta Health Services (AHS), AHS has declared a pertussis outbreak in Central Zone and is offering additional immunization appointment opportunities for at-risk individuals. A bacterial infection that causes severe coughing that lasts for weeks, pertussis can lead to pneumonia, convulsions, brain damage and even death. Infants six months of age and younger are at greatest risk for these serious complications. Of the 107 cases of pertussis confirmed in the Central Zone in 2014 to-date, seven cases have required hospitalization. Pertussis can be treated, most successfully if caught early; however, immunization can safely prevent disease and, if it does occur, reduce symptoms and spread of the disease. In Alberta, pertussis immunizations are offered – free of charge – through Alberta’s routine childhood immunization program. A series of doses is recommended, starting at two months of age, and again at four, six and 18 months; at four to six years; and again in Grade 9. Following this schedule ensures protection is up-to-date. Albertans who have not received a dose of pertussis vaccine since turning 18 years of age are eligible to receive a single dose. AHS has proactively increased the number of immunization appointments available in Central Zone to reduce infant infection rates. These appointments are specifically intended for the following Central Zone residents: infants and pre-school aged children who are not up-to-date on immunizations; caregivers and close contacts of infants such as parents, grandparents, nannies, child care staff (e.g. daycare centres and family day homes); health care workers; women who are at least, or greater than, 26 weeks pregnant (Immunizing women at or after 26 weeks of pregnancy is safe, and increases protection for newborn infants by minimizing risk of infection in those around them and giving them antibodies transferred during pregnancy). Of the above target groups, pregnant women and adult caregivers/close contacts may also be able to access immunization through their physicians. Please call ahead to confirm availability. Individuals uncertain of their child’s immunization history can contact their local community health centre to discuss. Anyone who suspects they, or a family member, may be sick with pertussis should stay at home and call a family physician or Health Link Alberta, toll-free at 1-866-408-LINK (5465), before seeking medical care. When prescribed treatment, cases should stay home from work, school or childcare until five days of antibiotics have been completed. MLA Joe Anglin responds to the Journal’s article regarding hospital The Edmonton Journal published a story on Friday December 5, 2014 titled, “Nine rural hospitals the Alberta government should close”. In this story the Journal reporter is suggesting that the Alberta government should close the Rimbey hospital based on the most recent facility “fair” condition score, and the outstanding deferred maintenance budget of $3.2 million. Presumably the Journal is suggesting that the government could save spending $3.2 million if the hospital was closed. The premise of the Journal’s recommendation in my view fails to take into consideration the many factors that contribute to the value of the Rimbey hospital from the perspective of patient care to the community it serves. The value of Rimbey’s hospital extends well beyond direct patient care. The hospital also serves as a powerful economic driver in Rimbey. Statistics show that a rural

hospital accounts for 15% to 20% of all jobs in a rural community. The presence of one rural physician accounts for 8.4 jobs in a local economy. It is estimated that indirect healthcare dollars spent in a rural community recycles through the community one and a half times. Most importantly, the delivery of patient care by a rural hospital is often more cost effective than the same services rendered in an urban hospital. On average statistics indicate that rural hospitals have better or equal care outcomes as compared with larger urban hospitals. Ultimately this is about people and community. The value of a rural hospital is transcendent. Rural hospitals are the life’s blood of many rural communities. As well intentioned as it may be for the Journal to suggest closing the Rimbey hospital to save healthcare spending, the suggestion will most likely cost Albertans more in healthcare. It is

The grant program aims to provide Įnancial assistance to community groups and schools to develop or deliver community-based environmental services and programs within the County. It is based on a compeƟƟve selecƟon process involves an applicaƟon form, regular reporƟng and the ability to demonstrate environmental beneĮts through the proposed project. ApplicaƟons must be completed, along with supporƟng documentaƟon (if required), for funding requests to be considered. Therefore, the County highlights the importance of aƩending a workshop in January to ensure that applicaƟons are complete. The citizens of Rimbey and the surrounding communities need to understand that the opinion of the Journal does not reflect the opinion of the Alberta Government. There is no current recommendation to close the Rimbey hospital, and, as your elected MLA for RimbeyRocky Mountain House-Sundre, I will challenge any recommendation to close the hospital, no matter what the source.

Community dinner shows true Christmas spirit By Treena Mielke And so this is Christmas. A table laden with a feast fit for a king, a background of laughter and friendly banter, music, many hands ready to help, guests receiving gifts, and above all, a shared spirit of camaraderie and friendship. It truly does portray the real meaning of Christmas. The community Christmas dinner in Rimbey promises all this and more. This year, the event is to be held at the Rimbey United Church at 2 p.m. on Christmas Day, said one of the organizers Gayle Rondeel. The master of ceremonies for the event will be Dave Davies. As well as a delicious meal there will be games and music and a chance to socialize for everyone. “It promises to be a fun event and so many people always step forward to help out,” said Rondeel. “Last year it went really well. We had about 65 people and the cooks, kitchen help and
other volunteers all enjoyed the lovely dinner along with everyone else.” “It was really overwhelming, the amount of support and help we received,” she said. “And I expect this year will be no different.” Rondeel said donations of food, cash and Christmas tablecloths are needed. “The United Church minister, Debra Laing was very receptive, said Rondeel. “She said the church would be more than happy to accommodate us for the Christmas dinner.” A meeting will be held at James Grill and Bar to finalize plans for the event. An Open Letter to Constituents of Rimbey-Rocky Mountain House-Sundre from the Wildrose Constituency Association and Candidate Jason Nixon
Would you tell a valued friend with life-saving skills to leave your community after more
than 30 years of dedicated service? OF COURSE NOT.

Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre is the region’s friend. Right now, it’s targeted by both a provincial government “review” of rural hospitals and coverage by the Edmonton Journal proposing that it is one of nine across Alberta that should be closed. Closure for any reason says to Rimbey’s co-ordinated team of 200 plus committed, high-performing health care professionals and staff that they are non-essential to the community and unimportant to their patients. After 30 years of service to the region’s people nothing could be further from the truth. Equally disturbing is that rural citizens in this riding—both patients and their families— would become second-class Albertans, with respect to health care, in Canada’s wealthiest province. Losing a community hospital means longer travel, longer patient queues at other hospitals, and even longer wait times to access medical specialists. This is unacceptable to all of us in this riding, and in others, and will never be supported by Wildrose. The economic impact in the region from a hospital closure, or downsizing, would mean an immediate loss of millions annually from job losses. Longer term, absence of modern medical facilities means industry and commerce will look elsewhere for growth opportunities. They seek locations where health facilities are accessible in easy proximity to their operations. These losses are devastating in any region, particularly if incumbent businesses decide to relocate. In closing, I have a message for the Alberta government and urban media. Stop using rural hospitals and health services as a sacrificial scapegoat on the altar of budget funding to redirect to urban centres. Closure is not the answer. Wildrose will never accept nor support such discrimination. Rural Albertans deserve access to health care and facilities. They don’t deserve to have their health jeopardized, said Nixon. The Alberta government continues to review Alberta’s rural health care tem in search of budget efficiencies, reductions and transfers to facilities in urban centres. Rimbey town council highlights from its December meeting County and town officials meet Rimbey Mayor Rick Pankiw, Rimbey CAO Lucien Cloutier, Ponoka County Reeve, Paul McLauchlin and county CAO Charlie Cutforth met Friday to discuss cost sharing issues. The North East lagoon outlet channel cleanout, HVAC funding for the community Centre, fire services cost sharing and the purchase of a five-ton tandem truck for snow removal were up for discussion. CAO Cloutier said these issues were discussed at varying degrees at the Nov. 29 budget meeting and council provided the direction for the CEOs and the CAOs to meet.
Funding approved Council approved funding for $1,189 to be contributed to the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance conditional to the continuation of the school component of their program and to providing information about the program to the public through such events as an open house. Council supports Kinsmen fundraiser Council agreed to purchase a table of eight for the Rimbey Kinsmen second annual Christmas party at a cost of $450. The party was held on Sat., Dec. 13 at the Peter Lougheed Community Centre. Proceeds from the event are in support of the proposed skateboard park. The tickets

Council gives green light to 2014 budget to be used as interim budget By Treena Mielke Rimbey town councillors have opted to use last year’s $5.77 million operating budget as their interim budget. At its Monday meeting council agreed to adopt that budget, instead of going with the 2015 draft budget of slightly under $5 million, until the assessments are received. CAO Lucien Cloutier said
there are several unknowns at this point, but the town needs to adopt an interim budget until the final operating budget is adopted to ensure uninterrupted operations. “It’s basically status quo. What council has done is put any further process regarding the 2015 budget on hold, until such time as our assessment information has come in which won’t be until the new year when we get
the requisitions. At that time, council will pick the discussion up and begin to take into consideration the assessment.” Last year’s $5.77 million budget shows projected operating expenses of $5.6 million with $216,884 slated for reserves and $1.5 million to go towards capital expenditures. Last year, taxpayers ended up paying about $58 more for their municipal taxes, which equated to about a 1.5 per cent increase in their taxes. Commercial taxes also increased by 1.5 per cent. Mayor Rick Pankiw is not prepared to predict the tax increase this year, noting it depends solely on how the assessments come in.

The Rimbey community is reaching out to lighten the financial load for a family whose husband and father has been diagnosed with cancer. Jason Wilson has been diagnosed with stage three, ademnocarcinoma cancer and will be traveling to Edmonton for radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Wilson has been unable to work because of the treatments. “We would like to try and help raise some money to help with travelling costs,

Reader says media paint false picture of constituency Wildrose AGM Dear Editor, It concerns me that media reports of the Rimbey/Rocky Mountain House/Sundre Wildrose Constituency Annual General Meeting (October 15th) paint a false picture of what actually occurred that night. It was certainly a remarkable AGM by any standard with the tone set when the only properly nominated candidates names failed to appear on the ballot paper. Perhaps unsurprisingly this caused consternation to many of the members in attendance and instigated some vigorous debate. When it became clear to the officials running the meeting that their opinions on the legality of this action were in the minority they tried, and
failed, to pass a motion to adjourn the meeting so simply got up and left. The majority who remained did what we had gone to do - legitimately elect our constituency party officials. In the days following the AGM the officials and the Party would claim that the meeting and some of the attendees were unruly prompting the early adjournment. It was clear to the majority who remained that the decision to adjourn was precipitated by the realization that their blatant attempt at election rigging was not going to be approved by the party members. The Wildrose party executive subsequently initiated an inquiry into the events of October 15 but this
proved to be a kangaroo court as they only interviewed and took input from one side. Obviously the inquiry’s decision was made before reviewing any evidence. The events of that night and the intervening weeks have further weakened the shaky democracy that exists in this province. By their actions the Wildrose party has shown itself to be just another “top down” dictatorship. The small flicker of hope that a true grass-roots, member driven party could be established in Alberta has been extinguished. Iain Aitken, Rimbey

Letter to grandson By Don Alquist I am very pleased to offer you what I believe to be your first written communication. Dear Bowen, It seems on the one hand to be a pointless exercise as you are only one day old and are blissfully unencumbered by the limitations and frustrations of human language. On the other hand the demands that time will impose on you shall, in the very near future, require that you cultivate some skill in this discipline. Over the last three years I have come to know your brother Hunter very well. He is developing what our entire family hoped for and look forward to seeing in you; “character and integrity”. You will hear people compliment you on your rugged good looks and manly charm (genetic attributes from the grandfathers on both sides of your family). Grandson, the people offering those complements may be speaking the truth but the heritage we all desire to see most is that which you get from your heavenly father. Do not resist His influences in your life. He offers guidance and wholesome discipline every step of the way. Your Dad and Mom, brother and cousins, uncles, aunts and grandparents will all try their very best to help you along life’s path but I will guarantee we will frequently fail you because that is our nature. As days turn into years and entropy exerts its monotonous influence, you will have ample opportunity to blame the entire population of the world for your ailments and frustrations. This seems a harsh message for you but because I love you I will quote a
famous author with whom I sometimes find myself in reluctant agreement. George Bernard Shaw said: “the true joy of life is to be used up for a purpose identified by yourself as a mighty one, a force of nature, not some whining snivelling little clot of ailments and grievances constantly complaining that the world has not devoted itself to making you happy”. People will encourage you to seek three things for yourself; liberty, freedom and happiness. I have found in my 63 years that this undertaking is defined with some clarity in the words of another author, “Liberty, like freedom and happiness is illusory and it’s pursuit is merely a form of genteel vanity. It is inspired by ego, promoted by self deceit and terminates in chaos and disappointment. Only those efforts that you make on someone else’s behalf and in promotion of their welfare produce lasting benefit. When you act as someone’s benefactor you create an opportunity for God to exercise elements of his grace on both your beneficiary and yourself. I encourage you to take to your advantage, with exceeding vigour and optimism, the words of Jesus who said “let the little children come to me for of such is the kingdom of heaven”. Remember this fact all the days of your life; seek him while he may be found because once Christ is your king, you never lose your intended status in His creation. Your loving grandfather

Council commits to funding for community van for three years By Treena Mielke Council has not only given the green light to the Handi-Van Society for an additional $20,000 to help keep its vans operational, it has committed funding for three years. At its regular meeting, Monday, Dec. 8, council met with Harold Kenney and Barbara Patey to discuss the society’s request. Earlier this year, council contributed $20,000 to the handi-van. The additional funding is to be earmarked in the 2015 budget. Kenney told council that the society operates two vans, one of which runs with volunteer drivers. However, the van which is used in town requires a paid driver. Kenney said the society is about
$14,000 shy of purchasing a new van. Council initially agreed to fund the van for $20,000, but after some discussion, decided to commit the funding during the duration of its term. Coun. Paul Payson, who voted in favour of the motion, originally had concerns about committing the specified amount. “I have no problem with funding it annually,” he said, adding he was concerned about committing $20,000 specifically, each year, and suggested the funding may need to fluctuate depending on the budget. “I wouldn’t see the need for the money decreasing,” said Kenney. The in town van, a 2012 GMC which has a lift and holds six passengers (two wheelchairs), was purchased by the
Blindman Handi-van Society through government grants and a $20,000 donation from Rimbey Legion. The society also owns a 2008 Ford van which is used for out of town trips. Vice chairman Harold Kenney said the service has been around for close to 30 years and is very much needed. “It is one of the very few non profit (handi-van services) left,” he said. “We largely exist through grants and donations.” User fares are reasonable; only $7 for a round trip in town and 55 cents a kilometer for out of town trips. “Our fares help cover our operating costs, but we operate at a loss,” said Kenney. Winter can be extremely busy for the handi-van.
“The coldest days can be our busiest days,” said Kenney. “We can be going steady all day. Medical issues are a priority and it is difficult for seniors to get around in the winter when there is lots of snow. It can be very treacherous.” Volunteer drivers for the out of town van are on call for a week on a rotating basis. and work a week at a time, and shifts run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers include Ted Evernden, Gene Shopiuk, Earl Jensen, Don Connell, Al Elliott and Harold Kenney. Wayne Colenutt is the paid full time in town driver. Ponoka County has approved annual support of $20,000 for the operation of the handi-van with the understanding the town will match these funds.

Dear Editor, Recently there has been much misinformation regarding the Rimbey, Rocky Mountain House, Sundre Constituency Association of the Wildrose Party and the infamous AGM held in Rocky Mountain House on October 15. So far all that has been expressed by the Wildrose Party executive has contradicted what actually transpired. Much has changed since I first saw Danielle Smith on television. This first impression sold me on the grass roots concept with its higher values and moral principles. No longer is this the case and all I feel is a grievous void. The AGM in Rocky and its events made me realize that the grass roots no longer exists. How is it possible that upon arrival to the AGM we realized that many names that were to be nominated were surprisingly absent from the ballot! How is it also possible that having a huge majority of members voting to continue

with the meeting was overruled by the chairman; by leaving and taking his small group of supporters with him. When asked by one of our members if he realized that he was resigning his possession as chairman by leaving, he replied “yes I do” and left anyhow. After forming a new board and continuing with the meeting, following all letters of the Wildrose constitution. After presenting it to the Wildrose excecutive committee not one of us was contacted to get our side of what really happened at that meeting October 15. In my mind this does not express democracy . This is not what I signed up for. I am extremely disillusioned and very disappointed. No longer do I believe this party as a viable alternative to anything. WINEGARDNER 1938 - 2014 ERICKSON Douglas “Doug” Leonard Erickson of Rimbey, Alberta passed away suddenly at the Rimbey Hospital and Care Centre, Rimbey on Monday, December 8, 2014 at the age of 60 years. Doug was born to Leonard and Bernice Erickson in Rimbey on March 31, 1954. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his beloved wife, Patsy; and his two daughters, Christy (Kenny) Varty of Ponoka; and Jenn Erickson of Rimbey; as well as two cherished grandchildren, Kelton and Lacey. He will also be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his mother, Bernice Erickson of Rimbey; and two sisters, Frances Erickson of Edmonton; and Beryl Curtiss of Grande Prairie; in addition to his nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many close friends. Doug was predeceased by his father, Leonard; and his brother-inlaw, Bob Curtiss. A Public Funeral Service in Celebration of Doug’s Life was held at the WoodyNook Church, Woodynook Road (RR 28-1), near Blackfalds on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Dana Struvé officiating. Interment followed in the Gull Lake Cemetery, Gull Lake. It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Mr. Ralph Donald Winegardner Sr. of Winfield, Alberta at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Thursday,December 4, 2014 at the age of 75 years. Ralph was born in Delmer, Ont. to William and Florence Winegardner. Ralph was one of 11 children. At a young age he set off to Alberta to find work, where he also found love. In 1960, Linda and Ralph moved to Tillsonbury, Ont. and were married in the spring of 1961. After the birth of their first son, they moved back west and settled on the farm west of Winfield, where they continued to reside. Ralph had many passions: he loved being outside, working on the farm and to go fishing, no matter what season. Ralph always loved a good mystery book or movie. Ralph is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Linda, and their children: Richard, Ralph Jr., Debi, Teresa, Roger, and Patti; grandchildren Ann, Chris, and Deanna. He is also survived by siblings Arthur, Howard, LeRoy, Lloyd, Beverley, and Marlene. Ralph was predeceased by his parents William and Florence and siblings Clarence, Bertha, Muriel, and Bernice. A memorial service for Ralph was held in Breton, Alta. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Red Deer Legion Br. #35, 2810 - Bremner Ave., Red Deer, AB T4R 1M9. National Organization Comforting Families of Fallen Troops Offers Tips for Navigating the Holiday Season Holiday cheer and merrymaking may be everywhere this time of year, but for thousands grieving the loss of a loved one, the holiday season can be an emotional minefield. And there’s no road map for easy navigation. Coping with grief over the death of a loved one during the holidays can be difficult. Memories of holiday traditions shared with a loved one who died may be painful. Somehow, mourners must navigate an emotional roller coaster ride during the holidays that can be bittersweet with nostalgia and happy memories, and also feel painfully cruel and isolating. The Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), a national nonprofit organization offering comfort and care to families of our fallen military troops, offers the following tips to help anyone who is grieving the death of a loved one during the holiday season. Take charge of your holiday season Anticipating the holiday, especially if it’s the first one without a cherished family member, can be worse than the actual holiday. Take charge of your holiday plans, and map out how you will spend your time. This can help relieve anxiety. Make plans Plan to spend the holidays where you feel nurtured, emotionally safe, and comfortable. Having a plan will help you navigate the holiday season and its activities. But remember to plan for flexibility, as you may not know how your emotions will respond, especially if it is your first or second holiday season after the death of a loved one. Find sustenance for the soul Your church, synagogue, mosque or other faith community may offer services, resources, and support networks for the bereaved. You may want to look for a support group for people who are grieving and have suffered a similar loss. Families who have lost a loved one serving in the military may find comfort by connecting with other survivors through the TAPS online community, peer support groups, peer mentoring or care groups. Don’t be afraid to change your holiday traditions Some traditions may be a comfort, while others can cause pain. Consider which traditions to keep, and which ones to forego this year. Do not feel like you have to do something because you have always done it that way. Include your lost loved one in gift-giving Give a gift on behalf of your loved one to someone else. Consider making a donation to a charity in memory of your loved one. Create a tribute Light a candle, display a favorite photograph, or set a place at the dinner
table to represent the missing loved one. Consider writing a letter to your loved one about the holidays and your special memories with that person. Be gentle with yourself Realize that familiar traditions, sights, smells and even tastes, may be comforting, or may jolt your emotions. This is the time of year when you need to be careful with your emotions and listen to yourself. Attend holiday functions if you can Consider attending holiday parties and events, especially if you’ll be able to spend time with supportive family members and friends. Make an escape plan in case the event is more than you can handle. If you think a holiday gathering might be more than you can bear, it is ok to stay home. Don’t pretend you haven’t experienced a loss Imagining that nothing has happened does not make the pain of losing a loved one go away, nor does it make the holidays easier to endure. Even though holiday memories may be painful, they can be comforting. It is ok to talk with others about what you have lost and what the holidays mean to you. Pay attention to your health It’s often difficult for people who have experienced a recent loss to sleep. Make sure you get regular rest and drink lots of water. Do not over-indulge in sweets or alcohol. If you feel overwhelmed, talk with your medical care provider. Take stock of both joy and sadness Give yourself permission to feel joy as well as sadness. Don’t feel like you have to “be a certain way” because of your loss, or because it is the holidays. Just be yourself. Express your feelings Bottling up your feelings may add to distress, not lessen it. To express your feelings, use your creativity to write a poem, talk with a supportive friend, create a painting, or pen a journal entry. Share your holiday season with someone else There are many lonely people who might like to experience the holiday season alongside someone else. Consider volunteering with a local charity or soup kitchen, inviting a neighbor for a special holiday meal or including others in your holiday activities. Donations taken for family in need at Christmas time Dear Editor I was truly touched when reading the story of the plight of the family from Bluffton published in the Dec. 2 edition of the Rimbey Review. It wasn’t difficult to decide I wanted to help this family and then I wondered if our customers here at Parkland Beach Store in Gull Lake may want to help. I have started a collection for the family in need and am confidant our community and customers will give what they can. The store is open Wednesday to Friday from noon to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and donations will be accepted during those times. Donations including a $25 gift card, clothing and food have already been received.
