Gleaners continues to give back BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
More than 30 years after the Creston Valley Food Bank was founded, the need continues to grow. “Food banks were originally intended to be a temporary measure,” said Creston Valley Gleaners Society volunteer and exec-
utive committee member Jean Syroteuk. “Now, 31 years later, the CVFB continues to help support an ever increasing need.” Creston’s food bank was started by a handful of volunteers who went out to “glean” produce from local farmers and orchardists. Today, it costs nearly $100,000 to operate the food bank, in addition to financial and fresh food donations from

the community, Harvest Share contributions and special projects like the Creston Valley Thunder Cats’ Stuff the Bus food collection. And costs continue to rise. “Our food bank clients can receive a food hamper that costs as much as $90$120 per person and they are welcome to come twice a month,” Syroteuk said. See GLEANERS, page 4

A 14-week program designed to help people who are recovering from a host of difficulties is being offered in the New Year. Celebrating Life in Recovery is a free series based on the life experiences of Cheri Peters who, well, wrote the book on the subject. “As a kid I never saw myself having a life,” Peters told the Advance from her home in Boise, Idaho. “When I stopped using drugs I realized I had all this other stuff that stopped me from enjoying any kind of life.” Born to teenage parents, Peters said her father was caught molesting her when she was only three months old. She was brutally abused by her mother. At 13 she was living on the streets of Los Angeles. Over the next 10 years, “I saw and was involved in some incredibly twisted things,” she said. “But they were less damaging than my home life because, by then, I didn’t expect to be loved or cared for.” Perversely, an introduction to drugs might have saved Peters’ life. “When I was introduced to drugs, I found for the first time in my life that I didn’t feel like killing myself,” she said. CVTA earns literacy award BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
A Creston Valley Teachers’ Association program has been recognized by the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, with the association recently receiving the Community Literacy Award. The fifth annual award went to the CVTA’s Books for Toddlers program, which got its start in the 1980s as Books for Babies, funded by teachers’
member fees. When a grant began covering the newborns’ books, the focus shifted to 18-month-old children. “Kids get a book when they are born and when they get their 18-month shot,” said Nancy DeVuono, a retired teacher and principal. “It provides that continuity.” When it started, Books for Babies saw a hardcover book of nursery rhymes and songs included with other gifts to newborns at the Creston Valley
Hospital. The brand new book presented to toddlers at the time of their immunizations includes a bookplate welcoming the child to the world of reading, as well as a brochure on parenting strategies to support early literacy development. Previous winners were English tutor Linda Price (2013), former Creston Valley Public Library chief librarian Ann Day (2012), Vicky Koenig and Family Place (2011) and Kootenay Employment services (2010).

Community Farm also benefit. Household and personal hygiene items are sold at Gleaners Too at a nominal price and the money goes back into purchasing groceries for the food bank. While the food bank is the first priority, CVGS disbursed $90,000 back into the community in 2014. “Over the last ten years, we have supported a variety of requests, some on a one-time basis, while others have been yearly,” said Syroteuk. “We have been committed to TAPS from the beginning as they struggle to maintain that vital program for our seniors within our community. Much of our funding goes into helping to provide nutritional snacks and meals for our public daycares, schools and programs such as Little Chefs, Know and Grow Community Farm, etc. Bursaries for our youth is another focus of our disbursements — five $1,000 bursaries go to PCSS, two $1,000 to the College of the Rockies, as well as a sports, music and an exchange student bursary.” Other programs within the community that receive support are the Creston Ministerial Association, the Christmas hamper program, boys and girls retreats, Creston Valley Hospice Society, therapeutic riding, Addiction Recovery in the Kootenays, Spectrum Farms and Kootenay Regional Association for Community Living, search and rescue and Creston Valley Community Housing Society. “A donation of $25,000 was given to the housing society eight years ago and now that they finally have the housing project off the ground, we are told that our generous donation helped tremendously to get the ball rolling,” Syroteuk said. “In the past two years we have also partnered with Muriel Buhr and friends to send warm coats, sweaters, winter boots, books, personal hygiene items and gift bags to the Shamattawa community in northern Manitoba.” Gleaners is fortunate to have the generous support of the citizens of the Creston Valley in donations of used and new
From page 1 With an emphasis on nutritional value, hampers include staples that families choose from. Available are flour and rice (brown or white), pancake mix, green peas, pearl barley, macaroni and cheese, quick oats, soup noodles, white beans, macaroni, spaghetti, and canned goods such as soup, tomatoes, baked beans, kidney beans, niblets, green beans, pasta sauce, evaporated milk, tuna and fruit. “We also offer meat, cheese, honey from a local apiarist, fresh bread, muffins, fruit, baby food, tea, jam, peanut butter, cereal, margarine, carrots, onions and potatoes,” Syroteuk said. “This is our basic list and there are often extras as a result of community donations.” Two years ago another project that goes hand in hand with the food bank, the Gleaners and Friends program, was initiated. It acquires shipments of reclaimed goods from a private sector provider. They include nonperishable food items, as well as personal hygiene and household products. The food items are shared first of all with the food bank and then with numerous other programs in the community. “As we started to implement this project, we were told that food is one of the biggest expenditures each month for many programs,” she said. “So once again we started to add to our support, this time in the form of non-perishable food, to local daycares like Family Place, Teddy/Grizzly Bear, First Steps and Dots to Tots.” Schools — Adam Robertson, Erickson and Canyon-Lister elementary schools, Prince Charles Secondary School, Wildflower, Yaqan Nuiky, Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School, College of the Rockies — youth groups, such as Beyond Wild and air or army cadets, and programs like The Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors, Trinity United Church Wednesday lunch, Cornerstone, Cresteramics, Creston and District Society for Community Living and Know and Grow
men, women, kids’ and infant wear and shoes and boots for all seasons. Clothing is culled for recycle on a daily basis and bagged ready for shipment to Vancouver. In 2014, Gleaners sent 260,000 pounds of recycling to Vancouver, which equates to 12 full pup semi trailers. Gleaners Too is also the recipient of truckloads of items to be sold. Donations of furniture, sporting goods, house hold items, books, CDs, tapes, movies, Christmas decor and other seasonal decorations are received. Over the years the quality of donations has continued to improve. On the whole, Syroteuk said, items are cleaner, better packed and of better quality. Poor quality items, or even trash, add unnecessarily to Gleaners’ costs. “In 2014, our dumping fee was $20,000,” she said. “That means that some in our midst still choose to use the Gleaners to dump their garbage instead of taking it to the landfill. That money would be better directed to improve the lives of some of our citizens.” As a non-profit society, the daily operation of Gleaners is overseen by an elected volunteer executive board. “Our most valued resource of all is our volunteers who work endless hours to create the legacy of the Gleaners being the most amazing place. Their generosity allows us to maintain cheap prices and the wide variety of items for sale,” said Syroteuk. “In 2014, our 105 dedicated volunteers put in approximately 34,000 hours of charity work. One only needs to meet the new families who have moved to our valley and to hear their compliments. One such comment was, ‘The Gleaners is a gift to the community, a gift that we can all be a part of.’ “We are always looking for volunteers who share the same generous philosophy of working together, creating a better environment and community for all. As Margaret Mead said, ‘Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world, for, indeed, that’s all who ever have.’ ”

always has a good selection, the best place to get your craft fix are the Christmas craft fairs, of which we had a couple big ones these past weeks, one in Wynndel and, of course, the major one in the Creston Room, which, if you time it right, is reminiscent of the subway rush hour in Japan, so lots of time to chat with your neighbor — they aren’t going anywhere. It was also a pleasure to chat with some of the various artists from around the valley as they displayed their works at the Images art show at Rotacrest Hall. Other happenings that have ramped up the amount of people considerably these past weeks have been the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce-sponsored free swim, as well as craft making in the front lobby while Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall handed out hot chocolate alongside people taking the happiness survey. Move over 20 feet and you were at our gingerbread decorating event where 100 of the little gingerpersons got garbed up in icing and candies in record time amongst the hordes of excited children. So excited in fact, that we had one unfortunate soul literally lose their cookies, and I mean in the “cleanup on aisle three” type way but that’s all part of the rich tapestry we weave at the community complex. Along with all this, we also had a novice tournament happening (these are the five- to eight-year-olds, so that means there are still lots of parents and grandparents coming out to cheer on the little gaffers), two separate parties in a couple of the meeting rooms and a huge wedding in the Creston Room. Definitely a weekend like that keeps our maintenance staff scrambling to clean up and do changeovers! It was another full court press this past weekend as we had Christmas or small business dinner/dances at the complex, curling centre and Rotacrest Hall Thursday through Sunday, along with other regular events, which culminated in a quick but thorough cleanup. I joke that my Scottish heritage is the origin of a certain “don’t be happy, worry” outlook on life. People like me can easily break the surface of a nightmare that has me wondering how our raft fared in the tsunami. People born at the end of the Second World War, that is, anyone who is around 70 years old, missed that sad, worrisome time. Our parents were the ones who lost siblings and worried about getting along after it was all over. What did we worry about that was anywhere near their suffering? As a young person, the first thing I remember worrying over (other than the usual social dilemmas) was the possibility of Russian missiles reaching North America from Cuba. My father assured us at the supper table that night in 1962 when the Cuban missile crisis was at its peak that everything would be fine. Saner heads would prevail, he said — at least, the heads willing to take a risk. And it was fine for that moment in time. Remember the years of the bomb shelter. The buildup of nuclear arsenals and the Cold War led to other conflicts, but from the point of view of the disengaged citizen, this war was confined to secret agents, propaganda and clandestine government departments. It made for good reading with Len Deighton and John Le Carré. We did not even have a plan. The hippie years affected many, not necessarily as consumers of hallucinogens, but in trying to live simpler lives, casting off the trappings of materialism and caring about all creatures. We were not inclined to worry. Nothing has been that simple since. We worried about other people and other people’s sons, who were drafted to fight war after war. Closer to home our worries HAN were to do with keepCAPABDLYE ing our children HOUSING healthy, getting a betSOCIET Y ter job. For us the dangers were not close up and personal; the troubles were somewhere else. We are not so far away anymore. ignore what is happening far from our boundaries. It smacks us in the face daily with images of kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls who will never return to their homes. We can’t ignore the video footage of militant men with guns no matter where they operate, all the more frightening because they mask their faces. Images like this eat at the psyche and erode our optimism. Worry is often softened by action, but not many are positioned to do anything calming on a global scale. A rare person among us will join Doctors Without Borders or build houses in ravaged areas or travel to trouble spots to save beleaguered animals. The rest of us do what we can in our corner to balance the scale. The worries best dealt with are those within our grasp, and we choose what we can do in our communities to be a positive force. We put ourselves “out there” in local politics or work for charitable organizations or delight people with art, theatre, music. We serve on boards or in community halls, give time to families in distress or listen to a friend who needs someone to listen. These acts of involvement are antidotes to the bad news that is all around us. This seems obvious, a cliché, perhaps, but getting above the worry is accomplished in all the usual ways. We in Creston Valley filled out a survey — a small optimistic act — about what makes us happy living here, how satisfied we feel about aspects of our lives. How happy are we with our level of personal productivity? Do we trust our neighbours? Do the local officials pay attention to people? Do we have enough money to buy food? Do we have a feeling of belonging? Sometimes we do have to sit down and list what is good about our lives. And in the news today: A father in Fort Nelson has built a six-metre snowman in his front yard for the delight of his children. It took him three weekends. Betsy Brierley lives beside Kootenay Lake. She used to write for the Advance a long time ago.

They only, food banks that do not rely on knew there was a need but, more government funding. The Christmas importantly, they also knew there was an abundance of food available in this valley. All that needed to be done was to tap into the resource. At harvest time, those volunteers and their friends were out in the fields and orchards, looking every bit like modern day characters from paintings by Jean-Francois Lorne Eckersley Millet or Camille Pissarro. Those were the early days of food banks, which were seen as a hamper fund, once a small program temporary solution to a problem of the Creston Ministerial Association, that needed to be addressed — a has also grown like Topsy. action with their governments than do their urban counterparts. “I have 10,000 water licences in my constituency,” Evans said as an example. Each holder of a water licence (or water well) had made a direct connection with the provincial government by filling out applications and getting approval. Urban residents pay their utility bills and turn on the tap. Rural living appeals to people who don’t need everything to be easy, for their needs to be met by governments and institutions. They take it as a given that they will have to drill for water and service pumps and dig septic fields. They know the snowplow might not arrive before they head off to work or take the kids to school. They might not want fire protection services that could one day save their home and will at the least lower their insurance costs. Heck, they might not even buy insurance. But those same people are the first to reach into their pockets when a neighbour is in need, the first to organize renovations to a house when a neighbour requires wheelchair access, the first to offer a ride to someone needing cancer treatment in Kelowna. Problems of friends and neighbours are their problems, too. And aren’t we lucky to live in such a place? I suspect those original Creston Valley gleaners who stooped to dig potatoes or stretched to pick apples back in the 1980s would have mixed emotions if they could see how those early efforts have evolved. They would be proud that their legacy of volunteerism has continued, and that the desire to look out for friends and neighbours is unabated. But they might also be disappointed that in the 21st century there are still people who need a hand up, but have to settle for a handout. Satire used to show double standards To the Editor: (Re: “The Teen Take: Do you Know the Proper Woman?”, Nov. 13 Advance) I wrote this column to point out the utter ridiculousness of the idea that women can be “sluts”. The article, written satirically, was meant to criticize slut-shaming and victim-blaming. Women should be free to express their sexualities as they please, without being seen as lesser human beings, and the victim is never responsible for rape. No matter how short her skirt is or how much alcohol she’s consumed, it is not the victim’s fault, but the rapist’s. The “Proper Woman” was meant to portray just how silly the double standards that women face really are. Glad to see I got people talking. LoRae Blackmore Lister

We were delighted to see the picture and to read the article about the joint town and Lower Kootenay Band councils’ inauguration in the Dec. 4. Advance. “Let us celebrate democracy,” LKB Chief Jason Louie said. I do believe it is much more. Here is an example of communities working together for a happier, more peaceful, better world. Hopefully, this good news will spread widely so our Canada and the world can learn from this great event. If we have peace and happiness in our families, peace and happiness in our communities and in our country, then we can work and hope for peace on our beautiful Earth. Right next to this picture is the article about the Christmas hampers and a picture on the next page with some of the Crest View Village Auxiliary members. In the middle of the picture seated is the president Clara Rushka, a very wise and active lady at the age of 92. She is always ready to do and to organize something for the not so fortunate people in need. We, who are thankful to live among friendly and helpful residents and a wonderful, caring staff here in the Crest View Village, are also experiencing the help, entertainment and fellowship from many volunteers again and again. We wish all the good people in the Creston Valley a wonderful Christmas and health and happiness in the new year. Margot and Henry Dahle Creston
To the Editor: I was very impressed by Susan Eyre’s Nov. 27 letter (“Canada a Partner in Illegal Wars”). It is all true, and there is little hope for any betterment in the near future. The U.S. ruling class isn’t going to change any time soon. But the outcome of the UN resolution against the “glorification of Nazism” (Nov. 21) vote tells us that the world politics are changing. In the entire UN General Assembly, only three countries voted against the resolution: the U.S., Ukraine and Canada. One can understand the American opposition to this resolution sponsored by Russia; America has no use for any country that is not its willing puppet. And Ukraine’s no vote was expected; after all, she is the only country now ruled by a Nazi government, installed by the U.S. and its friends, the same people who directed the overthrow of the democratically elected president
Victor Yanukovych in February and who are directing Kiev’s war against Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine. But Canada’s no vote is totally off the mark. During the Second World War, over 45.000 young Canadians lost their lives fighting Nazism and fascism, and our present government is, through this no vote, officially backing Nazis. According to www.thepeoplesvoice.org, “Canada voted no because their far-right prime minister, Stephen Harper, has been a virtually unquestioning supporter of all U.S. foreign-policy positions.” Samantha Power, the U.S. representative at the UN, decided on voting against the resolution, because of its unacceptability to the Ukraine. “Her delegation was concerned about the overt political motives that had driven the main sponsor of the current resolution. … Therefore, the United States would vote against the resolution. In other words: the U.S. opposed this resolution, supposedly, because it was offensive to Ukraine. …Was the U.S. simply doing the will of the Ukrainian government? Or was the Ukrainian government doing the will of the U.S. government — the government that had installed it?” Meantime, to show how able we are to protect democracy, Canada sent fighter planes to bomb the new enemy, ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), made up of terrorist mercenaries, covertly organized, trained and equipped by the U.S. in Turkey, and financed by Saudis. What, then, does the U.S. initiative of fighting ISIS mean? It means nothing. It’s a ploy, a cover for renewed U.S. and allies attacks on Syria and Iraq. The real objective is the regime change in both countries, and a roundabout way of spreading American-style democracy. A distinguished French statesman, Georges Clemenceau, made this observation: “America is the only nation in history which miraculously had gone directly from barbarism to degeneration without the usual interval of civilization.” We knew all along that ISIS (or ISIL, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) was an American project, and that the American led war against the ISIS is a fraud. The website www.globalresearch.ca reports that, “The ISIL are the foot soldiers of the western military alliance. Their unspoken mandate is to wreck havoc and destruction in Syria and Iraq. …The incursion of the Islamic State brigades into Iraq starting in June 2014 was part of a carefully planned military-intelligence operation supported covertly by the U.S., NATO and Israel. The counterterrorism mandate is a fiction. America is the number one state sponsor of terrorism.” Canada is preparing to expand its role in Middle East war. What Canada needs is a government that will spend the taxpayers’ money on projects benefiting this country, and not wasting it on American predatory colonial wars. Anton Skerbinc Boswell
Don’t forget our drop-in instructors in both dryland and aquatic venues are taking a well earned two-week rest Dec. 20-Jan. 4 but the pool and skating rink are open as usual. Call or come in and pick up a holiday schedule; we hope we see you sometime over the next few weeks, especially if you have visitors and want to show off the

Column started good Canadian tax discussion shouldn’t be funding U.S. wars To the Editor: (Re: “The Teen Take: Do you Know the Proper Woman?”, Nov. 13 Advance) It's unfortunate that some people have misinterpreted the intent of the column by LoRae Blackmore. The article is very insightful and shows LoRae’s talented writing style that delivers an important message. These are the signs of a woman who will have lots to contribute to society. Maybe it's a good thing that some are misunderstanding the column — it has created a good discussion. Frank Orosz Wynndel

Great holiday reading starts at Creston library
Creston Valley Public Library chief librarian Aaron Francis is on holidays so, this week, library staff member and guest columnist Pat Tomasic brings you her choices for some great holiday reads. The hibernation period is on us again; in human form that often means snuggling down on a comfy couch, under a blanket and indulging in a great read while the snow and darkness fall. The library can

offer some guidance on finding just the right book for you to take home this holiday season. For non-fiction readers, 2014 seemed to be the year of the aging rock star biography. New to the library are Bowie by Wendy Leigh, Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Story, Universal Tone by Carlos Santana, and Neil Young’s Special Deluxe (A Memoir of Life and Cars). Other bios include Christopher Anderson’s Good Son about J.F.K. Jr., Martin Short’s I Must Say and Gordie Howe’s Mr. Hockey, just one of several new titles focusing on Canada’s favourite sport. The bestselling You Are Here by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is a delightful visual treat to enjoy and relax to if someone needs an escape from the seasonal hecticness; it literally is out of this world. And after cleaning up the wrapping from the new gadgets, phones and tablets, you might want to read The

collection of powerful short stories, while David Mitchell’s The Bone Clocks is an ambitious and eclectic fantasy novel centering around a teenage runaway. Or try Sarah Water’s latest historical novel, The Paying Guests, set in post-First World War London, a time of upheaval for the British upper classes. If you’re looking for suspense/mystery, one of the following may tickle your fancy. The Burning Room, Michael Connelly’s newest Harry Bosch novel, Top Secret by W.E.B. Griffin, about special ops and the Cold War, John Sandford’s Deadline, where a dognapping charge leads protagonist Virgil Flowers into something more sinister, will fit the bill. After a looong absence, Hercule Poirot is revived in Monogram Murders, now in the hands and from the mind of mystery author Sophie Hannah. For something a bit spookier, Siobhan Adcock’s paranormal The Barter will send a non-weather related chill down your spine. For those immersed in a busy holiday period looking for more of a feel-good read, try Jan Karon’s latest in her Mitford series, Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good, which picks up after Father Tim and his wife
Cynthia return from a trip to Ireland. Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ Heroes are My Weakness is a romantic tale that centres around quirky characters during a New England winter. Finally, for something a bit “dafter”, Shopaholic to the Stars by Sophie Kinsella is the seventh installment in Becky Bloom’s life, a British ex-pat now settled in Hollywood with her husband and daughter. And, if you really want to immerse yourself in the season, there are new holiday titles. In Karen Swan’s Christmas in the Snow, a woman heads to the Alps where she discovers a long lost family member and secrets. For romantics, The Christmas Bouquet by Sherryl Woods is the most recent installment in her popular Chesapeake Shores series, and Christmas Prayer by Kimberla Lawson Roby focuses on a couple heading to the altar, but will they be derailed? And what would the holidays be without a new Debbie Macomber? Her latest offering is Mr. Miracle, also known as Harry Mills, a guardian angel on a mission. The library will be closed Dec. 25 and 26, so be sure to pick up some favourites before then. Happy holidays!

Thanks to
the generosity of the seniors and visitors, there were enough funds raised that evening to help three children this year. The generosity and merriment continues as the Krafty Kronys are getting ready to host two Christmas lunches next week for the seniors and volunteers. There’s someone we want to thank who is vital to how well our transportation functions, someone who quietly goes about taking care of the buses to make sure they are inspected and functioning. That person is Jim Daniels, who continues to volunteer his time for this task. Thanks, Jim, from all of us. So, it looks like we have a date for moving to RotaCrest Hall: Jan. 30. Bridget and her crew have been doing much sorting and clearing in preparation, and that will continue into January. Wishing you all a merry Christmas and happy holidays, and offering heartfelt gratitude to the community for helping us continue to provide this program. If you wish to make a donation to TAPS for 2014 or at anytime, it can be sent to Valley Community Services, 915 Pine Street, P.O. The Creston Community Band is pleased to welcome all to its second Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20 (doors open at 7). Come and enjoy an evening of favourite Christmas music at the St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church hall. Sing along with guest MC Vern Gorham and listen to special guests Kokanee Brass with Donnie Clark. St. Stephen’s will operate a concession with tables set about for a relaxed intimate atmosphere. Concession proceeds will go to a selected charity. The present Creston Community Band was formed in 1989 by a small group of dedicated musicians who saw a

were amazed at how quickly it all came back. So, if you are a recent player or have not played since school (however long ago that was), from piccolo to tuba, the band will help you get back into the ‘”swing” of things. The band has recently moved to St Stephen’s Presbyterian Church hall where it can store its music library, drums, stands and other equipment. The move allows it to practice and perform in the same location, although it will continue to support local functions. The band rehearses Mondays at St. Stephen’s (306 Northwest Blvd.) at 7 p.m. Visit www.crestonbc.com/ccb to learn more and see what it has been doing.

The band even has a bit of international flair with one of its members making the journey from Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Under the direction of Monte Anderson, the Creston Community Band has a large repertoire that includes upbeat swing, jazz, Dixie, film and television tunes, Broadway hits, classical, traditional and dance tunes, playing something for all musical types and tastes. The band is always looking for new members. Some present members had not played an instrument for 30-plus years and

Shop locally this holiday season
Shopping is a big part of the holiday season, when families and friends gather to reconnect and exchange gifts. While the popularity of shopping online has grown, such practices are not always eco-friendly or timely, as gifts bought online must be packaged and shipped, wasting valuable resources and time that last-minute shoppers may not have.

The benefits of shopping locally go beyond convenience and the chance to reduce your carbon footprint. The following are a few ways that shopping locally this holiday season can directly benefit your community and the people who call it home. Local economy When men and women shop locally, they are putting money back into their local communities. Local small businesses may be owned by your neighbours, and it can be comforting to know that your holiday shopping dollars are going to support a neighbour instead of a large corporation. Local businesses also employ your neighbours, so shopping local can strengthen the local economy by creating jobs that may not exist if you and members of your community fail to support local small businesses. Community identity Local small businesses go a long way toward creating a neighbourhood identity, and that identity can create a

stronger sense of community among you and your neighbours. In addition, a unique community identity can make your town more attractive to outsiders, and that appeal can improve the value of local real estate while also attracting more people to local businesses in your neighbourhood. Uniqueness of gifts The gifts you buy when shopping locally also can benefit your community. Gifts purchased from small local businesses tend to be more unique than items bought from national chains, as smaller retailers tend to sell more homemade items than their national competitors. Recipients of such items may find such gifts more thoughtful than mass produced items bought from national chains, and the uniqueness of homemade gifts may encourage the gifts’ recipients to visit your community and do some shopping, further benefitting your local economy. Customer service The accessibility of customer service is another oft-overlooked benefit of shopping locally. When buying from national chains, especially during the holiday season when such businesses may be overwhelmed with orders, making contact with customer service departments can be a trying exercise in patience. Long wait times on the phone or online can make the process of contacting customer service extremely frustrating. But such frustration is rare when buying from local businesses, as consumers can simply take their products into the store, where employees can immediately address their concerns. In addition, buying locally makes it more convenient for friends and family members who also live in your community to return their gifts. GG14B719

Buying local benefits the environment, too Buying local has many benefits. But while consumers may know that buying local helps grow the local economy by supporting local business owners and creating jobs, they may not realize the positive impact that buying local can have on the environment as well. Eco-conscious consumers often go to great lengths to ensure their money is being spent in an environmentally friendly way. But one of the easiest ways to be an eco-friendly consumer is to support local businesses, which tend to benefit the environment in a variety of ways. * Shopping locally reduces the environmental impact of your purchases. When buying from a large national chain store, chances are the products you’re purchasing were produced outside of your local community, oftentimes halfway across the globe. That means those products had to be shipped to reach the store shelves in your community. Such shipping leads to greater fuel consumption and air pollution. But local businesses often buy their supplies from other local businesses, cutting down on shipping and, as a result, benefitting the environment. * Local businesses often operate from
SHOP LOCAL
the centre of town. Local businesses typically need less space for their stores, which allows them to set up shop right in the heart of town as opposed to on the town’s outskirts. That makes local businesses more accessible to community residents, who might be able to walk or take a short bike ride to smaller, local businesses. On the contrary, larger chains tend to diversify their offerings and, as a result, need more space. This often pushes them to the fringes of towns, eliminating the possibility of walking to the store. That means consumers will have to drive to the store, increasing their fuel consumption and their carbon footprint as a result. * Shopping locally employs your neighbours, reducing their carbon footprints as well. Another benefit to shopping locally that’s often overlooked is the impact it can have on your neighbours’ carbon footprint. Local businesses often employ members of the community, which translates to shorter commutes, less highway congestion and less fuel consumption. So while shopping locally reduces your carbon footprint, it’s also helping members of your community reduce their own potentially negative impact on the environment. * Shopping locally can protect local wildlife. Many people

prefer to buy locally grown foods because they feel such foods are more fresh and buying locally grown foods reduces fuel consumption. Those things are true, but buying locally grown foods also can help protect local wildlife. When local farms can afford to stay in operation, local farmers are far less likely to sell their lands to developers. That can help protect the habitats of local wildlife. TF13A624

Volunteer earns 30-year pin DUCKS UNLIMITED CANADA
At the fall provincial council meeting in Kamloops, Creston’s Bettylou Christenson received her 30-year pin, and was the first recipient of a decoy sponsored by the Suzuki Canada Dealer Foundation. Chris Clarkson, senior events and volunteer relations manager, and Jasmine Ferris, B.C. provincial council chair, made the presentation. “I’m privileged to be a part of Ducks Unlimited Canada,” said Christenson. “It is a team effort and by working together we see amazing things happen. We are saving the wetlands for future generations. “All of my grandchildren have been involved in DU in one way or another. One of my granddaughters is attending the University of Victoria studying environmental geography and this has led her to become involved with the Victoria chapter dinner.” Christenson volunteered as the Creston chapter chair for many years, as well as helping with the Greenwing program. She took on the position of provincial secretary for the provincial council while still volunteering for the Creston chapter. She moved up to district chair and then territory

chair, covering the Kootenays and Okanagan. She stepped down from the local chapter as a volunteer, but supports its successful banquet every year, and currently holds the position of first vice-chair on the provincial council. In May at the provincial convention in Prince George, she will move up to vice-chair. “Living in the Creston Valley where nature is at our finger-
tips, we are able to see firsthand how monies raised through the local DU chapter have benefitted the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, helping with the cost of new water structures. “Saving our wetlands is ongoing, so if you’re in a community that is having a Ducks Unlimited dinner, I urge you to attend. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Marian Rosalie Smith (nee McClellan) September 24, 1925 ~ December 10, 2014,
Marian passed away with many of her loved ones at her side in Creston, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s. Marian was born to W. Norman and Lena McClellan in Edmonton where she completed her education. Marian met the love of her life, George Lewis Smith, while they were both attending U. of A. They were married in 1947 after achieving their degrees in Pharmacy and Medicine. In 1948, they designed and built their log and stone dream home on Hillside in Creston, B.C. In the early years of their 54-year marriage, Marian helped George with his medical practice by maintaining records of all the babies he delivered as well as taking notes during autopsies. Many years later, Marian and the other wives of Creston’s physicians formed the Medical Management Co. that spearheaded the construction and administration of the Family Practice building. Marian was gifted with a beautiful singing voice, which she shared with numerous choirs. She was also very active in, and became a lifetime member of, the United Church Women. Family was where Marian’s gifts shone: she excelled in all aspects of caring for and loving her Ă€ve children. One of Marian’s favourite activities was to be taken for rides around “her beautiful valley.â€? Marian was predeceased by her infant son Brogan, beloved husband Dr. George Smith, brother Norman McClellan, brother and sister-in-law Frank and Phyllis Smith and great-grandson Branson Beales. Obituaries John Svein (Sweyn) Gartland August 31, 1935 ~ December 13, 2014
Sweyn passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. A true pioneer of the valley, Sweyn was born in Creston B.C. August 31, 1935 to Norwegian immigrants Joannes and Anne Sophie Gartland. He was raised in Canyon B.C. and remained there until his passing. He received his education in the old one room school house in Canyon, later going to high school in Creston. He married the love of his life Diane Dawson of Canyon, on June 29, 1957. They remained in Canyon where they raised their three children. His love of the woods stems from deep admiration for his family that pioneered their way through history in the logging industry. Throughout his career he took great pride in every task that came before him. He excelled in all aspects of the industry from falling, to road building and equipment operating. 7th Annual Starlite Campaign Begins Cranbrook, BC…. EKFH’s 7th Annual Starlite Campaign has begun and the tradition of lighting stars atop the East Kootenay Regional Hospital is underway. The first three stars: Judy’s Star (Eagles Nest RV Resort), BMO Bank of Montreal and an accumulation of community donations has started the campaign with donations of $17,452.29. An extra-large star at the peak of the hospital has also been set ablaze signifying the start of the 2014 campaign. Funds raised through this year’s campaign will help community hospitals and health care facilities. EKFH is inviting donors to also consider investing their Starlite gift to provide critical support to intensive care at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. EKFH Chair Brian Clifford, “This is a very important time of the year for EKFH; holiday giving is a significant component of the funding the foundation is able to provide for many areas of health care in the East Kootenay. This year the Starlite Campaign takes on a special purpose with our efforts focused on raising critical funds for medical equipment for the new 6-bed ICU currently under construction at the regional hospital.” The 2014 Starlite Campaign goal is to raise $150,000 and to light 17 large stars and 24 smaller stars. By supporting
the Starlite Campaign donors can help strengthen health care in their own community and/or services provided at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The ICU Capital Campaign is a 17-month fundraising effort to raise $1,000,000; a more concentrated effort on the ICU campaign will begin in the early New Year. Since 2005 EKFH, with the generosity and help of donors like you, has provided $4,290,228 in funding to East Kootenay hospitals, facilities and programs. In the last four years, 95% of the donors’ donation has been dedicated back to the purchase of equipment and/or patient comforts. When you see the stars shining brightly please remember that through your generous support you can help light a path for others. Every dollar and every star counts. To donate: • On-line: www.ekfh.ca - tick ICU Capital Campaign • At your local hospital or health-care facility – make sure you say “I support the ICU” • Via Canada Post – EKFH, 13 24th Ave N, Cranbrook, BC V1C 3H9 The Starlite Campaign…. a tradition of giving in the East Kootenay.

From page 1 “It was unbelievably powerful. I found that if I took enough drugs I could survive anything.” Her own recovery began when she faced the wrong end of a gun, and welcomed the relief that a bullet would provide. “A drug deal went bad and I found myself with a gun in my face. I felt so grateful!” she said. “I’d been trying to kill myself since I was eight years old. Now, in a couple of seconds, all the pain would be over. When I realized he was just trying to scare me I wanted to scream, ‘My next breath scares me! Please pull the trigger!’ But he didn’t.” The incident triggered a visit to her abusive mom, who had gone back to school to study social work. Peters left the visit angry, but carrying an envelope bearing a paper her mother had written for a course assignment. Later, she felt that God had appeared in her life, a sense reinforced when she read the paper, in which her mom told her own story, and admitted to the abuse that she had inflicted on her daughter. Peters’ life was about to turn around. She says that addictions, to behaviours as well as substances, “keep us self-focused.” “I think a lot of us are stuck,” she said. “Unhappy, lonely, but still knowing it’s not how we want to live.” She describes addictions as

“anything that keeps us in bondage.” When Peters found the strength to tackle her addictions and move toward taking control of her life, she faced another challenge. “I had to learn to read — I was illiterate at the age of 23.” She would return to school and begin to connect with a world different than the one she grew up in. “When you start to wake up, look at who’s around you — you don’t have to like them, but healing is about reconnecting, learning to trust.” Addicts often deal with their problems in an unhealthy way. “You can go to a nicer addiction,” she laughed. “But recovery and healing means stepping away from all of it. I needed to create for myself what I
wanted my life to look like. … “The joy is that we are so resilient. It’s like you wake up and say, ‘What if I can step over that line?’ It’s empowering to say, ‘I’m going to make the choice right now!’ ” The author of several books (including Miracle from the Streets), Peters is a celebrated international speaker and host of a television and radio program. She founded True Step Ministries to help share her experiences, reminding people to “Always remember that God is crazy about you… Me, too!” Peters’ Celebrating Life in Recovery is being presented as a community service by Creston’s Seventh-day Adventist Church.
