CLAYTON RISES UP OVER LOSS OF PARKING ▶ GROUP PLANS TO JAM TRAFFIC ON 72 AVENUE AND 192 STREET ON SUNDAY AS PART OF A PROTEST KEVIN DIAKIW
Avoid using 72 Avenue or 192 Street on Sunday (Dec. 21), as it’s likely to be a parking lot due to a protest planned for the day. Clayton residents are “outraged” that existing parking space is being taken away, according to area resident Scott Anderson. The parking is being lost because of the long-planned four-laning of 72 Avenue. The project was given the goahead on Monday night by Surrey council. It means about 300 parking spaces along the side of the road will be lost as part of the expansion. Anderson says that’s completely unacceptable. “The neighbourhood is just outraged,” Anderson said, adding a shortage of parking was already a sore point. “I think this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.” The community has been in consultation with the city for some time and originally heard the project was going ahead despite residents’ concerns. continued on page 7

TAX HIKES GET THE GO-AHEAD ▶ SURREY COUNCIL APPROVES INCREASE OF $162 PER AVERAGE HOME NEXT YEAR KEVIN DIAKIW
She said she wept as she walked to Surrey’s budget meeting Monday, knowing that if planned tax hikes passed, she would no longer be available to afford her home. On Monday night, Surrey’s finance committee – comprised of all of city council – approved a budget that calls for a $162 hike in taxes.

For Binder Mahal, it also means an additional $116 for her secondary suite, a necessary addition to make her home affordable. “Our house needs a fence and we can’t afford it,” she told the finance committee. “Who knows how long our fridge or stove will last? “Please, please, this is not fair,” she implored. “We are not happy to live in Surrey anymore.” Since Surrey First came into power nine years ago, taxes have gone up 100 per cent, she said, adding her taxes are now $4,000 annually. “I cannot take this any more.” Surrey’s finance committee met on Monday afternoon to discuss the five-year financial plan for 2014-2018.
Staff outlined several changes to next year’s budget, the most prominent of which is the addition of a $100 recreation and culture levy to cover the cost of rec centres and other parks construction. The levy became necessary to fund the hiring of 100 new police officers, which was a major part of the Surrey First election campaign in the fall. The coalition now holds all seats on Surrey council. Surrey is planning to keep the property tax increase to 2.9 per cent next year – or $46.20 for the average home worth $648,000. continued on page 4

It’s getting tougher to find an apartment to rent in Metro Vancouver. Rental vacancy rates fell to 1.0 per cent in October from 1.7 per cent a year earlier, according to the fall market survey by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). “Employment and population growth, together with higher post-secondary student enrolment, added to demand for rental housing,” said CMHC senior market analyst Robyn Adamache. “Also the rising cost of home ownership may have encouraged some people to stay in rental housing rather than buy.” The provincial vacancy rate fell from 2.4 per cent to 1.5 per cent, while the Abbotsford-Mission area vacancy rate edged down 0.1 to 3.1 per cent. rate shows renters there have more options than those closer to Vancouver. The survey found a two-bedroom apartment rented for an average of $1,311 per month in Metro Vancouver in October, up 2.5 per cent from a year earlier. Two-bedroom rentals averaged less than $1,000 in three areas – Surrey, Langley and Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows, which had the lowest average rent at $886. In Surrey, the average cost of a two-bedroom apartment in October 2014 was $926. That’s an increase of 1.1 per cent from October 2013. The priciest areas to rent a

two-bedroom were West Vancouver at $2,031, UBC at $1,917 and Vancouver’s Downtown/West End at $1,849 The average two-bedroom rent in the Abbotsford region was $835, up 1.1 per cent. The survey for the first time estimates the proportion of condominium apartments directly owned by foreigners who live outside Canada – 2.3 per cent in Metro Vancouver, rising to 5.8 per cent in parts of Vancouver. Adamache said that rate includes all foreign-owned condo units, including those that are rented out, and also unrented units that are just held as an investment or holiday home. But it does not include foreign owners who buy property here through a Canadian holding company. Foreign ownership of real estate in the Vancouver area has been a topic of extensive speculation, with concerns raised that some neighbourhoods have many unoccupied homes. One failed Vancouver mayoral candidate proposed charging an extra tax on absentee owners who don’t rent out their homes.

A one-per-cent road levy introduced in 2008 as a temporary five-year measure will continue for another 10 years, according to finance committee chair Coun. Tom Gill. The one-per-cent road levy amounts to a $15.93 increase for next year. In all, the taxes for the average Surrey home will be climbing from $1,593 this year to $1,755 next year. If the home has a secondary suite, as with Mahal, it’s going to get even more expensive. Surrey is raising the secondary suite fee from $116 to $526 per home – a 28-per-cent increase. The secondary suite fee hike is explained by increasing costs associated with the bylaw department, police force and fire services. Along with Mahal, other members of the public attending the Monday afternoon meeting were less than impressed. Linda Stromberg said Surrey’s claim of having the lowest taxes in the region is misguided. Stromberg said she “objects to further tax increases” she sees in next year’s budget. She was particularly bothered by the levy. “There was no indication prior to or during the election that funding for culture and recreation would require such a tax,” Stromberg said. “The added levy/tax has come as a complete surprise and I would like you to consider alternative sources,” she told council. Tarlochan Sandhu, 63, asked council to hire some “experienced” police officers. He suffers from Parkinson’s disease and said last year he was handcuffed by officers who thought he was drunk while he was having an attack. After they called their superior, he said they were laughing at him. Gill apologized on behalf of the Surrey RCMP and assured him the officers arriving next year will be fully trained. The Surrey RCMP complement will go from 703 officers to 803, providing the RCMP training facility in Regina can provide all 100 officers requested by Surrey. Mayor Linda Hepner took umbrage with Stromberg’s assessment that Surrey no longer has the lowest taxes in the region and asked staff to clarify. “To be told by the Fraser Institute that we’re the lowest in the region and you (city staff ) tell us we’re the lowest in the region… I want to know that that is so,” Hepner said to staff. Staff indicated two different measures were being used. Stromberg was measuring the mill rate and the city is using the actual costs to taxpayers. After hearing from the public, the finance committee unanimously endorsed the budget without much discussion. It will be back before council next month for final adoption.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION: How much do you plan to spend on Christmas gifts this year? To answer, go to the home page of our website at surreyleader.com
Last week we asked: Are you willing to pay higher taxes in order to fund more police officers in Surrey? Here’s how you responded:
Yes 37% No 62%
Garbage in, innovation out Surrey is well on its way to being the leader in B.C. in dealing with organic waste. The city has selected Iris Solutions to finalize an agreement to design, build, partially finance, maintain and operate the Surrey Biofuels processing facility. This comes as Metro Vancouver begins its program to get organic material out of the garbage stream, as part of its efforts to reduce the amount of solid waste being generated. Metro Vancouver will begin enforcing its new rules about separating compostable material out of garbage in July 2015, and many businesses and property managers of multi-family housing are scrambling to find out how they can comply with the new rules. While businesses in Surrey face those same challenges, the city is well ahead of the region in dealing with kitchen and yard waste with the curbside pick-up system instituted several years ago. The green bins distributed to residents are being used at a pace that city officials did not expect, making the biofuel project even more feasible. The plan is to take that green waste and convert it to renewable natural gas. This gas will fuel the waste collection trucks that pick up green waste, recyclables and garbage at the curb side.
The facility will also produce a compost product, usable for both landscaping and agriculture. The city expects to finalize a fixed-price, performance-based agreement with Iris Solutions in early 2015, with design-build activities getting underway shortly thereafter. The facility will be in operation by late 2016. The funding will be via a public-private partnership (P3), with the federal government contributing 25 per cent of the capital costs through its P3 Canada Fund. When it is complete, the facility will be the largest of its kind in Canada and will go a long way towards helping Surrey meet the Metro Vancouver target of diverting 70 per cent of waste. It will be designed to receive and process 115,000 tonnes of organic waste each year. While we all take dealing with trash of all kinds for granted, we shouldn’t. When travelling in Africa last year, it became obvious to me that garbage collection is not handled well (or at all) in many parts of the world. This leads to pollution of oceans, foul air, added sickness, spoiled landscapes, polluted rivers and water sources and many other consequences.
Surrey has long had an efficient waste management system. It was the first city in the region to contract out garbage collection back in the 1970s. For many years, it stayed out of what was then the Greater Vancouver Regional District’s solid waste management system, operating its own dump at Port Mann, but when closure of that loomed on the horizon, it had no choice but to get involved with the regional system. Perhaps Surrey can show more leadership at the regional level and work hard to get the region off the incinerator track. Burning garbage is offensive to the environment and has a particularly negative effect on the Fraser Valley airshed. Given that one goal of the biofuel processing plant is to reduce emissions, perhaps the next step is to get the region to see that incineration does not add to emissions. Surrey residents should be proud of the innovative leadership shown in handling our garbage and should look forward to the day when garbage trucks are powered by the waste we generate.

Ideas for a non-toy Christmas HAVING A BAWL ▼ Kristine Salzmann
I love the idea of a non-toy Christmas. This is not as bah-humbug as it might initially sound. Proponents of the nontoy Christmas aren’t saying no to presents – they’re saying yes to experiences and creating memories. Last year the presents under our Christmas tree spilled out and around its base. My then two-and-a-half-year-old was initially ecstatic, but soon became overwhelmed and wanted to play with the presents she’d already opened rather than continue to open more. A week later, she couldn’t remember half the gifts she received or appreciate who thought to give them to her. What if, instead of pieces of battery-operated plastic, we gave our children tickets to Science World or the Vancouver Aquarium? Music lessons, art classes, or movie passes? I’ve already purchased
tickets to a concert in January by her favourite children’s musician that will make a great stocking stuffer, and plan to sign her up for a local 4Cats art studio workshop. Of course, it’s always fun to have something tangible to unwrap and little ones may not get excited over pieces of paper. Concert tickets could come with a CD, dance lessons with ballet slippers, a flashlight with the promise of a camping trip. I also like gifts that encourage exploration of their environment or time spent outdoors: binoculars, a telescope, magnifying glass, new sports equipment, or gardening tools for little hands. Other physical gifts that aren’t toys per se include books, family board games, and art supplies. For my daughter’s birthday last year I signed her up for a subscription to
National Geographic Little Kids magazine – she is delighted when it arrives in the mail with her name on it. Another gift idea I’ve fallen in love with is a monthly craft box subscription. This way we can look forward to each month’s mystery package and spend time together crafting while her baby brother naps (and I can spend less time on Pinterest and in dollar stores searching for supplies). In the lead-up to Christmas Day, our home-made advent calendar will include the occasional chocolate, hair clips and temporary tattoos. But behind other doors will be slips of paper letting her know we’ll be decorating gingerbread cookies that day, going to Cloverdale’s annual Santa Parade, or joining friends

at a nearby community centre for the City of Surrey’s Breakfast with Santa. Once committed to the idea of a non-toy Christmas, it’s easier to ignore the onslaught of advertisements and coupons for toys. It also forces me to research local organizations and family events, and to be a little more creative and thoughtful. Plus, these gifts for my child also end up being gifts for me; instead of forgotten toys collecting dust in the playroom, activities and special outings offer the promise of quality time spent together. And isn’t spending time with loved ones what the holiday season is about? Kristine Salzmann occasionally writes a parenting column for The Leader.

▶ CLAYTON ‘PARK-IN’ SCHEDULED FOR DEC. 21 from page 1
“We had to get used to the idea of losing 300 parking spots, and we’d figure it out,” Anderson said they were told. Surrey awarded a contract for the widening on Monday (Dec. 15) night. Surrey will be meeting with residents today (Thursday) to see if some solutions can be found. “We want parking on 72 Avenue and we want some additional parking along some of the side streets,” Anderson said. He also said a temporary measure will not be accepted by the residents. “My take is they’re going to offer us temporary parking on 72 Avenue,” he said. “We’re not prepared to accept that. If that’s all they have to offer, we’ll be going ahead on (Dec.) 21 (and) basically shutting down the entire Clayton neighbourhood.” Coun. Bruce Hayne said he’s fairly confident a solution can be found at the meeting on Thursday. There was a push to get the work done because a traffic light has become necessary
at on 72 Avenue at 196 Street for public safety reasons. In order to do that, the road has to be widened as planned so lights are put in the right place. Hayne said residents may be able to park in the outside paved lane on a temporary basis. In addition, extra parking will become available on 74 Avenue. Hayne said one of the problems with Clayton
is people have suites in their coach homes and within their house, meaning more cars on the street. Others are using their garage for storage, leaving even more cars on the street. As to the possibility of the residents blocking traffic as part of a demonstration, Hayne said it’s their right to hold a peaceful protest. “The cyclists do it downtown Vancouver
almost once a month,” Hayne said. “Everybody has a right to have their voices heard.” The “park-in” is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 21 on 72 Avenue beginning at 9 a.m., where people will be encouraged to park at 72 Avenue and 192 Street to block traffic. Stay tuned to www. surreyleader.com after Thursday to find out if the protest is continuing as planned.

Good Fairy Snowdrop (Erin Marshall) protects Sleeping Beauty (Melissa Paras) from the evil Demon Hemlock (Stephen Elcheshen) in Royal Canadian Theatre Company’s pantomime production of Sleeping Beauty.

This is the weekend to use them!
Celebrate Christmas with a twisted, funny fairy tale ▶ SLEEPING BEAUTY COMES TO SURREY ARTS CENTRE STAGE ALEX BROWNE
Just in time for Christmas, another local panto rolls into the Surrey Arts Centre this week with a bushel-load of traditional, family-friendly, British-style fun. The show is Ellie King’s Sleeping Beauty, presented by the Royal Canadian Theatre Company, and – after some 25 years of pantomime productions – everyone knows the producer/author’s winning formula. Colourful, extravagant costumes, cheery songs, a magical retelling of a familiar fairy tale, silliness, puns, slapstick comedy and hiss-worthy bad guys are mandatory for the show, which runs Dec. 19-28. There’s a radiant, tuneful principal girl – Melissa Paras as Princess Rosebud – the ‘sleeping beauty’ of the title for at least some of the running time. And – in the time-honoured fashion of all old-country pantos – there is also a brave principal ‘boy’ who just happens to look good in fishnet stockings (Andie Francis as Prince Indigo), and a ludicrous Dame (RCTC favourite Alan Cedargreen, once more donning drag as Rosebud’s nurse Bizzie Lizzie). “Alan is his usual wonderful self,” King said. “And Andie and Melissa have got youth and vigor and energy – they’re everybody’s perfect principal boy and girl.” But there is one big change to the show this year – for the first
time King has handed off directing chores to her son, James, a panto perennial known for finding his own variations on the panto Demon each year. “I was a little trepidatious – it’s not easy handing it over,” King confessed. “But I’m very pleased with James’ direction. He still asks for my ‘eye’ on things, and
it’s looking very good and playing very well.” In that vein, James’ new duties have enabled Stephen Elcheshen to step out of his customary ‘Idle Jack’ shoes and into the juicy role of Demon Hemlock, joining his wife and fellow RCTC veteran, Kerri Norris (as the evil Fairy Nightshade) and Michael Widman (as
henchman Igor) on the villainous end of the scale. Sleeping Beauty runs until Dec. 28 at the Surrey Arts Centre, with a two-for-one preview on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and matinees at 2:30 p.m. Surrey Arts Centre is located at 13750 88 Ave. Tickets available at 604501-5566 or tickets. surrey.ca

Sukh Dhaliwal has taken the first step toward regaining a seat in Ottawa as Member of Parliament (MP) for Surrey-Newton. Dhaliwal defeated Surrey lawyer Randeep Sarai for the Liberal party nomination Saturday at Tamanawis Secondary School. The next federal election is expected in October, 2015, which would be Dhaliwal’s fourth attempt at winning the Newton-North Delta seat. After an unsuccessful try in 2004, losing to Conservative incumbent Gurmant Grewal, Dhaliwal was elected Liberal MP for the riding in 2006. He was re-elected in 2008 but lost the seat to Jinny Sims of Sukh the NDP in 2011. Dhaliwal Dhaliwal was nominated in October, 2012 by the governing Liberal party as its candidate for Surrey-Panorama for the 2013 provincial election, but he withdrew four months later after he learned he was facing six charged under the Income Tax Act. Earlier this year, Dhaliwal pleaded guilty to three counts and paid a $3,000 fine.

Is a Collision Repair Company a Good Investment?
THE ROAD RULES www.roadrules.ca

n upward trending stock chart published in the newspaper Globe & Mail’s ‘Report on Business’ last week was good news for investors in Boyd Group Income Fund, a Winnipeg-based fund the units of which include such brands as Boyd Autobody & Glass in Canada and Gerber Collision & Glass in the United States. These companies are part of Boyd Group, which has grown from one repair shop in Winnipeg established in 1990 to 318 shops today—doubling in size since 2011—and is now one of the largest collision and windshield repair operators in North America. Reportedly, the Boyd Group is the only publicly traded such group in what is described as the “highly fragmented North American auto repair industry,” collectively valued at more than $30-billion. The Globe & Mail report indicates that all seven analysts who focus on Boyd Group are recommending it as a “buy,” which means they see potential for more growth and target price increases. For road safety advocates dreaming of a ‘zero crash future’, however, the climb of the Boyd Group chart is a worrisome snapshot. The underlying analysis is even more disturbing. It would be one thing if it at least stopped after identifying the usual conditions that foster business stability and growth: First of the classic business analysis reasons is that improving systems making for a strong position to meet the ongoing demands of business ‘feeders’—in this case auto insurers who tend to refer their insureds to the larger, more established
repair shop chains. Secondly, cash flow is assured as receivables are low risk given that about 90 per cent of Boyd Group’s business is paid through insurance. Thirdly, this industry appears to be “ripe for consolidation”. Fourthly, in Boyd Group’s case the prospect of 20 per cent per year growth “through a combination of same-store sales growth and acquisitions of both single and multi-store operations.” Fifthly, the lower Canadian dollar is also beneficial given that 90 per cent of Boyd Group’s revenue is from the US. But the analysts go on to sketch out the bigger picture—the context—that substantiates their belief that along with these business factors profitability is almost assured. Here it is. The auto collision and repair industry is a safe bet because crash rates, they say, are on the way up. More drivers and more congested roads mean more crashes. Lower gas prices mean more driving and more crashes. Even the weather is now involved. More icy weather in North America supposedly means more crashes. National Bank Financial analyst Trevor Johnson summed it up this way: “People, unfortunately, are always going to be crashing their cars, especially when the weather is bad.” In short, while alerting investors to the need to consider the traditional underlying business factors boding well for Boyd Group, they also tout fundamental factors that will multiply crashes and hence grow the bottom line not just for Boyd Group but also for the industry as a whole. To put it another way, this same group of analysts outlined the risks for Boyd Group: “trouble finding and integrating new acquisitions”; “weakening relationships with insurance companies”; and “a drop in vehicles collisions.” But not to worry, they say, since all of these risks are low. All of this, however, may be contradicted by the advent of amazing anti-collision technologies that are now standard on luxury vehicles and will be standard on all vehicles in the not too distant future. We’ll see.

been released. Air One RCMP helicopter scoured the area for two teens who fled the vehicle and headed southbound on 146 Street. Police have determined the car was stolen and seized it for forensic examination. Both suspects are described as being in their late teens. The male is thin, has a goatee and was wearing a red hoodie. The female has dark blonde hair and could be wearing a pink sweater. Anyone who sees these individuals should call Surrey RCMP at 604-5990502 or to remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers at 1-800222-8477 (TIPS). On Friday, a woman was struck and a man later arrested in another hit-and-run. On Dec. 12 at about 8:45 p.m., a 56-yearold Surrey woman was walking south on 141A Street near 89 Avenue. As there were no sidewalks, the woman was walking on the side of the road when a Honda Civic hit her from behind. She suffered several abrasions and a break of both bones in her lower leg. The car continued on its way. Emergency crews arrived and took the woman to hospital, and she was expected to make a full recovery. The Surrey RCMP Criminal Crash Investigation Team began to investigate and a few hours later found a damaged Honda Civic at 140 Street and 88 Avenue. Just as they were preparing to call the registered owner, a woman called the police station and said her 20-year-old son told her he believed he hit a pedestrian. He was subsequently arrested and charges are Cpl. Bert being consid- Paquet ered. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said no matter what people think they might have hit, it’s their legal obligation to stop at the scene of an accident. The investigations continue.

Charges stayed in sex attacks ▶ TWO MEN STILL ACCUSED IN TWO VIOLENT ASSAULTS IN SURREY IN 2012 SHEILA REYNOLDS
One of three men charged last spring in connection with two violent Surrey sexual assaults has had his charges stayed. In May, Simranpreet Singh Dhillon, Gurjinder Sodha and Sukhraj Singh Chahal were charged in two separate 2012 attacks on two different women. However, court records show a stay of proceedings was ordered last Friday on three charges laid against Chahal, meaning the case against him has been dropped. Multiple charges against Dhillon, 21, and Sodha, 24, remain. It’s alleged Dhillon picked up a sex trade worker near King George Boulevard and 91 Avenue on Aug. 12, 2012 and drove her to a secluded area of Colebrook Road, where she was violently assaulted. Both Dhillon and Sodha are also charged in a second incident Oct. 18, 2012 when it’s alleged another woman was picked up near King George Boulevard and 105 Avenue and
Simranpreet Singh Dhillon

also taken to Colebrook Road where she was
physically and sexually assaulted.
Dhillon faces 11 charges, including two each of sexual assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, robbery and possessing weapons/firearms, plus one charge of aggravated assault. Sodha faces three charges – sexual assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement and robbery. Neither man is in custody. Their next court date is Jan. 16.

Diesel costs stay high ▶ ONCE CHEAP FUEL NOW COSTS MUCH MORE THAN GASOLINE JEFF NAGEL
Pity the poor diesel truck owner. While regular gasoline prices have dropped significantly with the plunging price of oil, the pump price for diesel has remained stubbornly high. Diesel is now averaging $1.32 per litre in Metro Vancouver, down just 12 per cent from its summer peak, while gas has fallen 28 per cent to $1.09. “It shouldn’t be that high,” said John Whittall, a West Kelowna photographer and retiree who bought his diesel pick-up for the fuel savings. “Typically, diesel hasn’t been more than gas. When gas was low it was lower.” That’s historically true. But early 2009 – when diesel was 85 cents a litre and gas was nearly $1 – is the last time diesel drivers enjoyed big savings. The price gap closed and since 2012 diesel has cost a few cents a litre more than gas most of the time, according to statistics maintained by petroleum industry analysts MJ Ervin and Associates. For the last three years, diesel has
been stuck between $1.30 and $1.50 in Vancouver, costing a few cents more than regular gas for most of that time. Jason Parent, vice-president of consulting at MJ Ervin, says the reason for the disparity is diesel and gasoline are two very different commodities that don’t move together in lockstep. “They each have their own supply and demand fundamentals and they can move in different directions,” he said. Unlike gasoline, which jumps in price towards summer as more drivers hit the road, diesel tends to rise in the winter. The reason, Parent said, is that diesel is virtually identical to heating oil, which is in high demand to heat homes in the winter. “In the winter season when it gets colder, demand for heating oil spikes and that causes a demand pull on both heating oil prices and diesel prices.” The drop in crude oil prices has put downward pressure on diesel, he said, but that has been largely offset by the increase in winter demand – much to the irritation of diesel users. “The guys who use diesel are all wondering why they’re not seeing the same benefit as everyone else.” Whittall said he has difficulty believing Parent’s explanation.

Buying or Selling a Home? I can help with all your legal documents, Power of Attorney, Wills
He said diesel prices never seem to budge, no matter if it’s summer, winter or crude oil prices are collapsing. “I bet you it hasn’t moved a penny up here,” he said.

Yes, winter weather has arrived early this year, but there are some clever new products available designed to make life with an auto less stressful and safer in sub-zero temperatures. Ranging in price from $9.99 to $159.99 these products could
embarrassing, getting stuck on the side of a lonely highway is far more serious! The Trac Grabber Car Traction Aid ($39.99) is not a replacement for conventional chains, as it’s not intended for highway driving use. Easy to use and quick fitting, this traction aid is also far lighter and easier to store in a vehicle than tire chains. A truck version ($49.99) of the Trac Grabber Car Traction Aid is also available. Sold in pairs, a Trac Grabber is attached to each drive wheel, similar to a tire chain (but is much easier to use). It’s designed to supply provide enough traction to release a car (stuck in snow or mud) and get it back on the highway (where it should be removed). Another good auto safety gift idea is the MotoMaster Eliminator Tripod Light ($29.99). This multi-function light has an articulating head with red LED emergency light and fold-put tripod legs that extend for additional stability when placed on the road to warn drivers that they are approaching a broken-down vehicle. It also features a powerful lithium-ion rechargeable battery. Good vision when driving is very important in cold weather. If you have to park you’re vehicle outside overnight, the Subzero ArcticGuard Snow and Ice Windshield Cover ($9.99) is an inexpensive investment. A hook system secures it inside the car, however, users do complain about it flapping in strong winds. You may also consider upgrading your current headlights to SilverStar Ultra Lights ($59.99). They promise up to 50 percent brighter light with up to 40 percent more down-road illumination than standard halogen lights. New wiper blades can also make a big improvement in driver vision and a set of Bosch Icon Wipers cost from $24.99 to $25.99. This premium dual-rubber synthetic product claims to last 40 per cent longer than other blades. If you have a fear of running out of fuel, or a friend who does it regularly or you simply want a peace-of-mind back-up supply of gas for a long driving trip, Spare Fuel ($19.99) is a non-flammable gasoline derivative that is safe to store in the trunk. It’s safe to use in all engines that use unleaded gasoline, comes with filler tube and it can be stored in your vehicle all-year-round. The most common winter auto emergency is a dead battery. Yes, you could carry a set of jumper cables and hope that you can get a boost from another vehicle, but that’s not always easy or possible. Another solution is the Noco Genius Mini Booster, GB30 ($159.99). It may seem a little pricey, but this compact yet surprisingly powerful lithium-ion jump starter pack is mistakeproof and multi-functional. Offering 400 peak amps it can provide up to seven jump-starts on a single charge. It’s also a seven-mode LED flashlight and it can be used as a portable recharge (USB) dock for other electronic devices. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca
