Although the cold winter is off to a warm start, the mild climate isn’t affecting the number of people seeking shelter from the elements. The La Nina extreme weather response program in Trail is averaging about three individuals nightly in the six-bed temporary shelter housed in the basement of the Trail United Church. Open seven nights from 9 p.m. until 8 a.m., two outreach workers from Career Development Services (CDS) open the doors to mostly males between the ages of 30 and 50 years each shift. However, the demographic is constantly evolving from those who are homeless to women seeking shelter from domestic situations, and those travelling through the area for medical appointments with no transportation back home. Within the Kootenay

Boundary, Grand Forks houses a seven-bed temporary shelter through Boundary Emergency and Transitional Housing Society, (BETHS). The five-month service averages six to nine people per night, said operational coordinator Steve McGibbon. Besides Grand Forks, the shelter serves people in Christina Lake, Greenwood, Midway, Rock Creek, Beaverdell and Bridesville. Last season, the shelter housed over 450 “bed nights” during the Nov. to March period, McGibbon explained, but last month there were already 120 bed occupied, and workers expect December to exceed that number. It’s usually about six men to one women seeking help through the temporary shelter. The number one reason for homelessness is the lack of affordable housing, and secondly is the inability for some to heat their own homes, he added.

Extreme weather response shelter programs are funded through BC Housing with a temporary purpose to provide spaces to individuals and families who are homeless during winter months when sleeping outside could threaten their health and safety. Those shelters differ from year-round shelter beds in that the latter usually are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and provide three meals each day. The nearest shelter for the homeless that offers the service 365 days a year, is the Nelson CARES Society’s Stepping Stones for Success, located at 567 Ward Street. The shelter reached its 10– year milestone on Dec. 10, and the need for the service doesn’t seem to be slowing down. This year often up to 16 beds are occupied in the site’s 18-bed capacity.

Shelters keep homeless warm this winter continued from page A2

As in the temporary shelters, it’s usually more men than women using the shelter, about two-thirds to one-third, says Klee Hunter, the society’s manager of the Affordable Housing and Emergency Housing program. “But there is no pattern, to say in the winter there are more people and in the summer there is less,” explained Hunter. “Some winters we are packed, some we are not. It’s just impossible to predict.” As a key element in the strategy to break the cycle of homelessness, the shelters and drop-in centres are disbursed funding to help connect people who are homeless to support and housing services within their respective communities. In Greater Trail, a joint venture between the Greater Trail Skills Centre and CDS called Getting to Home, was launched two years ago with a goal to end homelessness in region.

“The project well surpassed our ideas and what we had set forth to do,” said CDS spokesperson Gail Pighin. “We are coming to the end of our funding pool and hope to raise funds as well as awareness that homelessness isn’t a problem that occurs in larger cities,” she continued. “It is alive and happening right here in Trail and the surrounding areas.” The homelessness initiative began with 28 people on the roster in need of assistance, but by the end of June this year, the program has helped 163 individuals from Rossland through to Fruitvale find a place to call home. “This isn’t just about picking the person up and saying ‘Here is a house for you,’” said Pighin. “It’s about looking at the dynamics and what has created this situation and how we can help them be in a better place and get the support they need.” Single mothers, seniors on the verge of losing housing, youth transitioning out of foster care, brain injury clients and people struggling with

2014 State of the Basin Snapshot Report The Rural Development Institute (RDI) is pleased to announce the release of the 2014 State of the Basin Snapshot Report. The State of the Basin project is an indicator monitoring initiative aimed at improving the BasinBoundary region’s understanding of important trends related to economic, social, cultural and environmental well-being in our communities. Keith Morgan Ask Keith’s media contemporaries to describe his approach to anything he undertakes and you will hear such words as “passion”, “enthusiasm”, “energy and “innovation” used repeatedly. Never in neutral, the Brit-trained news guy drives projects as he would a finely tuned car, adding the options and features along the way to make the experience as good as it can be. Indeed, Keith is an innovator in developing editorial content for all media platforms and a master at weaving informative and entertaining material of wide appeal into imaginative revenue generation projects. He launched his journalistic career in 1975 as a reporter for his hometown newspaper in Blackpool, England, moving to Vancouver in 1980 where he began a 32-year-career with The Province/ Vancouver Sun. Latterly he created such highly profitable and readable specialty sections at the papers as Driving and Sunday Homes. The multiple-award-winner broadened his media experience by authoring two books, making regular TV appearances, hosting talk shows in Vancouver and Kelowna and writing and executive producing The Province Road Test quiz show for prime time TV. Twas the Night before Cruisemas ‘Twas the week before New Year’s, and all through the car Components were groaning, it couldn’t drive far. The tow straps were hung by the work bench with care, In hopes that new parts soon would be there. The poor old engine had ran out of puff With thick smoke billowing, it needed more than a buff. The transmission was leaking, the engine misfired Leaving me weeping, from these repairs I would tire. When out on the lawn there arose a low rumble So smoothly it sounded. No roughness, no stumble. “I envy that sound,” I said with a mumble. Just as I’d feared, prognosis: not good. When a deep voice behind me said “You did all you could.”
