Pitt donors win mayors’ challenge Friends food bank benefits from double contributions By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

Maple Ridge residents may grow to like Pitt Meadows’ flag. They’ll be seeing it for the next month every time they walk into Maple Ridge municipal hall after the smaller city won the CP Holiday Train Challenge on Wednesday. Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read and Pitt Meadows counterpart, John Becker, announced the challenge two weeks ago to see which city had the biggest heart and could raise, per capita, the most food and money for the Friends in Need Food Bank. When the train rolled in with Blue Rodeo singer Jim Cuddy performing, the donations started to flow. When it was over, Pitt Meadows residents had the bigger hearts. Those who dropped by to see the CP Holiday Train at the Pitt Meadows location brought 2,954 pounds of food. See Train, 13

TransLink referendum approved Province approves question on sales tax By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

THE NEWS/files

A B-line bus from downtown Maple Ridge to the Evergreen SkyTrain line is part of the plan.

The province approved a TransLink referendum on Thursday for this spring, when Lower Mainland residents will vote on a 0.5 per cent increase in the B.C. sales tax to fund the transportation authority’s 10year plan. New B-line bus routes, shorter

waits for buses and upgrades to the West Coast Express service are the main benefits that residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will get in the deal. That’s what Pitt Meadows council heard from Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore at their Tuesday night meet- Moore ing. The Port Coquitlam mayor is also a key voice for the Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation, and

explained the upcoming TransLink referendum, which will determine how to fund the transit authority’s 10-year plan, if successful. If the plan is approved by voters, Moore said more busing will be the easiest for TransLink to roll out. So communities from Coquitlam to Maple Ridge will get their improvements first. “We’ll see the most impact, almost

immediately.” Two new B-line buses will connect Coquitlam Centre to both downtown Maple Ridge and downtown Langley, via the Golden Ears Bridge. There are currently three B-line routes in the Lower Mainland, but that would increase to 14, served by 159 new buses. These buses have limited stops, greater capacity, have their own lane, can go through red lights, and are touted by TransLink as being faster than driving. See Transit, 10

Cellphone searches a privacy concern Court rules warrant no longer required By Phil M elnyc h u k pmelnychuk@mapleridgenews.com

D

espite a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision giving police wider powers to search cellphones after an arrest, Ridge Meadows RCMP haven’t indicated how they’ll respond to the new ruling. On Dec. 11, the court ruled that police can search the cellphone from someone who’s been arrested without first getting a court ordered search warrant. The ruling allows a warrantless search of a phone provided it’s carefully documented and limited to the immediate reason for the arrest. Some Maple Ridge residents are uneasy about the change. “I don’t think they should be able to search my phone,” said Mike Staub of Maple Ridge. But he could accept police searching phones if they’re related to the reasons for arrest. “Have fun getting into my phone,” he added, noting his has a thumbprint password. “I just don’t like that issue,” added Ian MacIntyre. “A lot of our personal information is on our phone. I just

don’t like my personal information going out to anybody.” One area that’s becoming difficult to interpret is the blurring of the lines between a large cellphone and a small tablet or notebook computer. SFU criminology professor David MacAlister said the decision doesn’t take into account the power of cellphones that people carry. “The court has taken a fairly naive view of what a cellphone is,” he said Friday. “No doubt police are going to push the boundaries a little bit and see what happens.” Tylyn Hardman of Pitt Meadows still wants police to require a warrant in order to search phones. “That can be taken for granted in some circumstances. The laws are put in place for a reason.” Marlyse Neukomm, also from

Maple Ridge, wasn’t bothered by the court decision. “For me, it won’t make a difference because I have nothing to hide.” MacAlister said the ruling appears to limit the search to recent text messages, e-mails, photos and incoming and outgoing calls, not older ones or an exploration of data that may be in various other smartphone apps. A deeper search of a smartphone could still be done, but would require a warrant. MacAlister said it’s unclear exactly where the line would be drawn between recent information related to the arrest – like a photo from a crime scene or a text to a crime boss confirming a job was done – and older data, including unrelated personal texts or intimate photos officers might stumble upon. “Are police really going to be careful

to just look at the last one or two photos taken? That causes me concern.” MacAlister said the ruling appears to run contrary to a 2013 court decision that all computer searches require a warrant because of the intrusiveness of searching all the private and personal information they contain. He questions whether the cellphone or computer rules would apply to tablets. MacAlister said technological lines between computers, phones and tablets have become increasingly blurry and there’s no logic in the law attempting to redraw them. “There’s a real grey area now between what constitutes a phone and what constitutes a personal computer,” he said. “I personally use my cellphone for pretty much everything that five years ago I would have done

on a computer.” Investigators could potentially gain access to everything from contact lists to web browsing histories to GPS location information through smartphones. Also unclear is how police officers would enforce the new power to search phones, especially in cases where users have password protection to access their phones. The decision dismissed an appeal of the 2009 armed robbery conviction of a Toronto man who argued police violated his charter rights when they searched his phone without a warrant and found a “we did it” draft text. The court ruled warrantless searches are allowed if the arrest is lawful, the search is related to the arrest and based on a valid law enforcement purpose.

Be careful It’s a familiar refrain this time of year. No, not the holiday wishes. Rather, the plea to motorists and pedestrians to take special care while they’re on the streets. Every December in B.C., an average of seven pedestrians are killed and another 269 are injured. The dark rainy weather, slippery streets and poor visibility all conspire to make driving more difficult. There’s little we can do about that. But what we can do is make the extra effort to see and be seen. ICBC has a few suggestions. They’re made every year, but they’re worth repeating. To motorists, remain attentive at all times. Not only is it illegal to use a hand-held device while driving, the consequences can be deadly. Pay particular attention around intersections where 75 per cent of all pedestrian incidents occur. Watch while turning left or right for pedestrians who have already begun to cross. And remember that the rain makes the roads more slick. So build in a bit more braking time. For pedestrians, never assume that just because you see the vehicles, their drivers see you. Headlights, traffic and other distractions compete with your visibility. Fight back by ensuring you are dressed to be seen; wear reflective clothing, a reflective arm band, or carry a light. Keep your eyes and ears open and focus on what’s happening around you. That means pulling out your headphones, or putting the phone away while crossing a busy street. But the most important point is to never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact and always err on the side of caution; the consequences of an accident are far graver for the pedestrian than for the driver. The holidays are a hectic time of year. We all have places to be and things to think about. But they’re also meant to be a happy time; don’t let an accident or injury spoil that. – The News

RMS heard this from community advisor Sandie Hollick-Kenyon after it sent the DFO photos of black eggs in Along the Fraser Coho Creek spawners. Jack Emberly Hollick-Kenyon quoted Maurice Coulter Boisvert, another DFO advisor: “The female was from a tributary of the Alouette River – Coho Creek – found during spawner escapement numeration. The small stream can be heavily influenced by stormwater, which could lead to low oxygen levels, Coulter-Boisvert said. “It could be a combination of anything in storm water – antifreeze, oil, brake line material, paint thinner. It can all end up in a stream.” He noted Coho Creek runs along agricultural ditches, which could have low oxygen content. In his opinion, water quality tests are “the only way” to find out what they are, and what’s causing them. Would DFO conduct a streams investigation, I later asked Hollick-Kenyon. She said the fish health vet’s findings didn’t indicate any reason for that.

Q

uestion of the week:

“I’m pretty sure an investigation wouldn’t be warranted at this time. We don’t have a water quality unit. It would be a challenge at this time. “Are you a stream keeper?” she added. “Yes.” “That’s something – monitoring, testing – that could be done by stream keepers. That’s what we’d encourage.” So, low oxygen and pollutants entering storm drains equals black egg? Mystery solved. Maybe not. “I don’t see how they [DFO] could jump to the conclusion that storm drains are the problem,” said Maple Ridge environmental officer Rodney Stott. He said improved and more efficient water filtering measures have been in place around Millionaire Creek in recent years. He agreed, however, that irrigation ditches draining agricultural land could be sources of low oxygen in Coho Creek. DFO doesn’t walk those ditches any longer, doesn’t look for “disruptions and disturbances” now that the Fish Act has changed to disenfranchise aquatic life in ditches. No fish “of economic value,” so no need to check what’s being dumped into them. Stott suggested DFO could regularly test ditches draining into Coho Creek and pass on information that everyone – the city, stream keepers – could use. If Coho Creek has an oxygen deficiency, it happened in the past two years. A stream

keeper course I attended on Coho then found all conditions ideal for salmon – clean water, good gravel, leafy cover to provide shade in heat, bugs to feed fry in the spring, and a normal and healthy oxygen level. DFO has a duty to find out what went awry. Returns are dismal this year. It would also have a better idea of how many chum to expect. This fall, DFO guessed one healthy run of 1.3 million chum. It allowed a commercial opening. Fishermen returning with 12 fish shook their heads. Coulter-Boisvert worried about having enough chum eggs for the school program. Does DFO management really want to know what’s in ditches, or whether storm drains kill fish? If they did, they’d re-assign officers to walk streams, test waters, enforce laws, count salmon. Doug Goslings still plans to give his community advisor the new batch of diseased eggs he found recently. They’re completely black. He wants testing in a DFO lab. Doug Stanger plans to take his camera with him every time he walks a stream now. ARMS is pleased that river stewardship groups are talking more about the problems streams and spawners face today, while wondering how long we’ll have wild salmon in our streams. Jack Emberly is a retired teacher, local author and environmentalist.

THE NEWS/letters Thanks for making my day Editor, The News: On Monday morning, I was traveling west on Lougheed Highway and happened upon an intriguing sight. Lined along the highway on both sides were scores of Thomas Haney secondary students holding up hand made signs. As I slowed down to read some of the messages, my Monday morning blahs turned into smiles of joy. I was told to “Honk if you love someone”, “This is your day!”, “You are wonderful.” Well, honk I did, in fact I leaned on my horn for an entire block along the highway. To whomever came up with this placards of positivity idea, I say, bravo. In such a techno influenced culture, to see a group of youth holding up hand made, hand printed cardboard signs made my heart sing. To the students who participated in this wonderful idea, I say, thank-you for being there on that Monday morning, you lifted my spirit and changed my day. Kim Pechet Maple Ridge

We are failing B.C. children Editor, The News: Re: Still no funding for youth shelter (The News, Dec. 10). Let’s be really clear – the federal funding changes that are apparently to be directed to permanent housing leave 12-15-year-old, at-risk children completely out of the picture. That new funding is to be put towards 18-24-yearolds. Those permanent housing options will take time for those 18-24-yearolds who will have no safe place to be while they wait, with very few front line workers to support them. The 12-15-year-olds will either become visible on our streets, or completely invisible in unsafe environments, neither option with sufficient front line workers to support them. And the province prefers placing youth in foster homes may be a true statement about what they prefer. It is not, however, what

And ministry practice is not to refer young people to a safe house is an odd claim when the reality is just exactly that – referral to a safe house and that then allows the time required for all the rest of the pieces of this

harrowing B.C. system to unfold while the youth are stabilized and supported. Sometime let’s really talk about what happens when that safe house is full and a homeless youth can’t get a bed. In the first years of the safe house, youth stayed for 30 days and the required supports were put into

B.C.’s children are put further at-risk by B.C.’s government. We should all be ashamed. And we should all be very disgusted that our government can take such a sickening position involving our children. And we should finally, and clearly say that enough is enough. The most impoverished children in Canada, and our government takes more away from these voiceless, marginalized citizens of B.C. Let’s just finally be honest with ourselves. Red Nose rides again cflanagan@mapleridgenews.com

Operation Red Nose is still looking for more volunteers for New Year’s Eve. The campaign has been a success so far. The first weekend of operation Operation Red Nose featured 15 teams and provided 57 rides, driving a total of 1,735 kilometres. The second weekend, 20 teams provided 112 rides, for 3,117 km. Last weekend, 21 teams

provided 121 rides, for 3,261 km. This will be the last weekend of service for Operation Red Nose, which will also be active on New Year’s Eve. “We are always looking for more volunteers to try to get more rides out there so more money can be raised for amateur sport. But also more people can be driven home when they need to. “Definitely on Dec. 31 we are going to need lots of volunteers,” said Alex Pollock,

Operation Red Nose community liaison. This is the 19th year of Operation Red Nose service in British Columbia, which serves 25 communities across British Columbia. To volunteer, go to operationnezrouge.com or pacificsportfraservalley.com. To book a ride, call 604515-6673 in Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows or 604-515-NOSE. Operation Red Nose runs from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Dec. 19, 20 and 31.

There is no plan B: Moore Transit from front

In Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, 27 per cent of residents live near a frequent transit network – meaning a bus arrives

every 15 minutes. Under the 10-year plan, that will increase to 57 per cent. Moore said that is a significant improvement in service, because a transit

user can walk to the bus stop at a random time, and their wait for a bus will be only 7.5 minutes on average. “You don’t have to

memorize the bus schedule,” he said. About 50 per cent of businesses in the area are near a frequent transit network, and that would

rise to 78 per cent after the plan. Expanded service to Silver Valley and the Albion and Thornhill areas in Maple Ridge are also part of the plan. Moore impressed upon councillors that a population explosion is about to leave car commuters “in

the mud,” if more people don’t use transit. Projections say Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will have an additional 52,000 residents by 2040, as part of a million-person hike in the Lower Mainland overall. The challenge is how can the transit system

serve an additional million people, Moore said. “Because if we do nothing, we know that 600,000 more cars will be on the road by 2040.” The mayors council voted to pursue a 0.5 per cent hike in the PST to fund the transportation authority’s $7.5 billion, 10-year plan. Ballots will be mailed to voters on March 16, and the voting will conclude on May 29. A vote of 51 per cent or better will constitute support for what is being called the Metro Vancouver Congestion Improvement Tax. The plan also sets out improvements to West Coast Express service. By 2018, there would be a new locomotive and five cars, and five more cars by 2024 – the end of the 10year plan. There would be an additional train in the morning, increasing the number of runs to six, with some additional capacity on some of those trains. “We’ve been crying for that for ages, especially midday service,” said Coun. Janis Elkerton. She asked whether there is any plan for runs beyond the morning and evening commuter trains, or on weekends. “Probably not, to be straight up,” said Moore, adding that the answer would be to catch B-line service to SkyTrain in Coquitlam. The plan also calls for increased SeaBus, Handy Dart and night bus service, light rail in Surrey, an extension of the SkyTrain Millennium Line and a new Patullo Bridge. Elkerton noted that in TransLink’s material it says B-line service will go to Maple Ridge “or” Langley. Moore said that “or” should be an “and.” “That was the intent all along,” he said. TransLink calculates that the 0.5 per cent increase in PST will cost the average family in the region $125 per year, and that the tax is a more affordable option than raising the necessary funds though a carbon levy or adding a vehicle registration fee. Moore said only 30 per cent of residents are aware of the proposed plan and referendum, so a public awareness campaign is needed. “If this plan fails, there is no plan B,” Moore told council, adding that the Mayor’s Council would then go back to the province and ask for leadership.

A fire early Monday in rural Maple Ridge has destroyed a house, garage and tack shop just days before the start of the holiday season. Maple Ridge firefighters got to the house on 112th Avenue near 251st Street just before 5 a.m., when it was fully engulfed in flames. However, there were no injuries, said fire chief Dane Spence. “It doesn’t appear that there was anyone home at the time.” He said the buildings are a total loss and there’s no cause identified so far. Firefighters were kept busy two nights in a row, after a blaze began at about 11 p.m. Tuesday night at S&W Forest Products on 288th Street, north of Lougheed Highway. Spence said the office is a total loss. “It’s a very old building that’s been added on to several times. “This was in the office building. This really had nothing to do with the mill.” Cause hasn’t yet been determined. There were no injuries.

Ridge to fly Pitt flag Train from front

Maple Ridge residents brought 2,538 pounds to the Port Haney station. As for cash donations, Pitt Meadows collected $3,044, compared to Maple Ridge’s $2,726. “Our volunteers are just bagged today, said Mary Robson, executive-director for the food bank. “The biggest thing is we got double the donations from CP Rail. Robson said the Port Haney stop was packed with people, more than in recent years. “I’ve never seen that many people, she added. “Everything just fell into place on both shows. Cuddy did an amazing job. This year, the Holiday Train made its first stop in Pitt Meadows to mark the city’s centennial. With that stop, CP Rail kicked in $7,000 as its contribution for the food bank. It did the same at Port Haney. And there were more donations.

in Maple Ridge, the Firefighters for Families Fundraiser and Food Drive collected $7,137, while firefighters in Pitt Meadows garnered $2,963 for the food bank. Based on donations per capita, Pitt Meadows emerged the winner. According to the rules set out earlier, Maple

Ridge will have to display Pitt Meadows flag in Maple Ridge city hall for the month of January and also display it behind the Maple Ridge Mayor Nicole Read for the first televised council meeting of 2015. Maple Ridge, with its population of about 80,000 would have had

www.mapleridgenews.com - THE NEWS -- Friday, December 19, 2014 -- 13 to have four times the amount collected by Pitt Meadows. Robson said the extra contributions have restocked the formerly emptying shelves at the food bank, which this year has given out 800 Christmas hampers. “Our shelves are filled up, and the other amazing thing happening this year is the volume that’s coming from the schools. It’s just been overwhelming.

cal of former mayor Deb Walters for not responding to the 1,400-name petition calling for no tax increase for 2014. The petition was organized by the late Tom Murray. On May 21, there will be a transportation town hall meeting at Heritage Hall, scheduled as an opportunity for the public to discuss issues including the Lougheed Highway and Harris Road intersection, the CPR track crossing and traffic snarls it causes on Harris, and local neighbourhood traffic calming. The city will invite CPR, TransLink and Transportation Ministry officials to the forum. To address “transparency,” council will begin recording video of its council in committee meetings, as well as regular meetings, and posting them online. At present, the city is provided video of regular council meetings only, supplied by Shaw. But Becker said the council in committee meetings are where much

of the debate occurs. Motions must be passed again at the regular meeting, but generally the decisions have already been made. He would also like to give opportunities for public comment to council during meetings, rather than at the end – after decisions have been rendered. The city will also establish a Citizen’s Committee on Open Government, to provide recommendations to city council on ways that city council and city hall can be more responsive and transparent to residents and other stakeholders. Once it starts to work, it will have a three-month time limit to bring recommendations. The fourth T the team promised was teamwork. Becker has arranged some team-building exercises for council, but they have generally expressed optimism about there being a lot of cooperation in the group. His team included Elkerton, Bruce Bell, David Murray and Mike Stark, all elected.

Develop with cycling in mind B

arely two weeks after Maple Ridge council’s inaugural meeting, Mayor Nicole Read and her team had some discussions that gave us a pretty good indication that our new group intends to get more serious about cycling. On the agendas for the public hearing and council meeting of Dec. 9 was a development proposal for an 18-storey tower on Brown Avenue in the town core. This proposal is part of a plan for a number of high rises, all along Brown Ave., north of Dewdney Trunk Road. This is a real game changer for our town. There are already three other towers in the pipeline, two of which are also on Brown Ave.,

and the third will be right around the corner from the other three on Dewdney and Edge Street, all built on a large podium with a commercial component and multiple floors Cycling of under- and Jackie Chow above ground parking. In another five years or so, it is expected that another development of five more high rises will move forward, also along Brown Ave., but on the west side of 224th Street. Brown Ave. is one of two designated bike routes that help cyclists get to and through the town core. So far, car traffic on Brown Ave,.

hasn’t been busy. It’s clear that going from low to high density will affect traffic. Proper cycling facilities will have to be included in the road design, so that cyclists can continue to safely navigate the roads. According to the present plan, space is provided for parking on either side and one car lane in each direction. Cyclists will have to ride in the middle to avoid getting hit by an opening car door. Many cyclists will end up having to ride on the sidewalk. Wayne Bissky, the de-

veloper of this property, a 25-year resident of Maple Ridge, has a strong desire to help the city become less reliant on cars, and to make it more feasible to get around on foot and by bike. He says that if the standards for Brown Ave. included bike lanes, that’s what he would have planned to build. The multimodal transportation plan for the town core, the cycling component of which has not been reviewed as part of the new 2014 transportation plan, does not call for bike lanes. Council took a strong position that a solution will have to be found. It’s so refreshing to see this council take cyclists’ concerns seriously. It’s in the interest of anybody who

drives, bikes or walks in and around town to make safe cycling part of the plan. Another development proposal that concerns cyclists is on 123 Avenue at 207th Street. A 21 single-family-home

development is proposed to be built between two tributaries of McKenney Creek. Cycling along this narrow stretch of 123 Ave. is daunting, with cars speeding by and some giving cyclists little space. According to the city’s road standards, it is considered “substandard, and the city can ask the developer to

widen it as a condition of the development. I’ll be watching with great interest to see what happens with these two proposals. I think we just may be on a path to better cycling in the future. Jackie Chow is a member of the Maple RidgePitt Meadows chapter of HUB Cycling.

More sizzle for money By Zack Spencer

W

hen the original Nissan Murano was introduced in 2002, it was one of a number of car-based crossover vehicles that helped build the mid-size family SUV category. What that original model had was a unique take on design that made it stand out from the crowd. Here we are in 2015 and Nissan wants to recapture some of that original sizzle with this third generation Murano. With a bold, eye-popping design that looks like nothing on the road, this latest model has a sharper price, an upscale interior and refined ride that Nissan believes will appeal to Baby Boomers. After spending a day driving around California’s Napa Valley, I believe that this new product has an even larger possible market than just Boomers. • Looks: Since the 2015 Nissan Murano is just about to hit dealership floors, the Napa region was the first in North America to get to see it. By the reaction from other drivers on the road, this mid-sized people mover gets a lot of attention. The bold front design now incorporates the headlamp treatment that will start to migrate across its other vehicles, like the new Maxima coming soon. The wedge shaped look is referred to as a boomerang and it is mimicked in the rear lights as well. Both the front and rear have LED accents and the main headlamps are LED on the top trim levels. The other design highlight is the roof, that looks like it is floating thanks to a blacked out rear windows and roof pillars. This design also features curvaceous rear hips, making the design modern and stylish. Now sold as front wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), and priced from $29,998, the Murano is an option for many potential buyers. It is too bad that only the top Platinum model comes with 20-inch wheels, all the other trim levels are fitted with 18-inch wheels. • Inside: The interior is a reason that many people will consider this product, not just affluent baby boomers. The design is simple but looks upmarket; the Murano might be an alternative to buying a Lexus RX350, for less money, or a young family wanting something more upscale than a compact SUV, for not much more money. The dash and

The 2015 Nissan Murano. surrounding materials all looks first rate. The trim that looks like wood isn’t, rather a plastic that mimics wood but some might think it feels cheap but it certainly looks good. The base $29,998 (FWD) S-Trim isn’t base at all thanks to heated front seats, Bluetooth, navigation, backup camera and satellite radio. The next model up is the $32,998 (FWD) SV and it adds a power driver’s seat, huge moon roof, a power lift gate and heated steering wheel. There is also the $38,398 (AWD) SL that includes leather seats, Bose stereo and more or the top $43,498 (AWD) platinum that amps up the goodies to include heated rear seats,

cooled front seats, 20-inch wheels and a host of safety features. • Drive: The 260hp 3.5L V6 engine is a carry over from the last model but the body of the new Murano is 66kg lighter. This and a modified continuously variable transmission (CVT) helps to improve fuel economy to 11.2L/100km in the city and 8.3L/100km on the highway, using the new, stricter fuel ratings for 2015. The tuning of the Murano is very relaxed, almost luxury-like. The steering is very easy to operate; some might find it too light. The pace at which the CVT works is very subdued, meaning the car wants to be in the low RPM range

to help extract the best economy but when pushed it can take a while to wake the car up. To get around this there are now set shift points in the CVT that can be accessed through the transmission’s manual mode. It would be better to have a sport setting for the CVT but it isn’t offered. • Verdict: Overall the packaging of the 2015 Murano is very good. The interior has plenty of room for the front and rear passengers and the seats are comfortable. The cargo area is very big and the square shape of the hatch makes loading easier. This product should be attractive to buyers of compact SUVs that want more room and V6 power for just slightly more. Shoppers of premium brands who want a refined ride and interior for less money should consider the higher trim levels. This new Murano will certainly get attention for its exterior styling, but dig deeper there is more to this product than just an attractive look, there is value and comfort that is available to a wide range of potential buyers. zack.spencer@ drivewaybc.ca

The Christmas trees of 1914 By Mike Lascelle

W

ith the centenary of the First World War, we have been reminded of its many harrowing battles, such as Ypres, Gallipoli, Passchendaele, and yet the most impressive incident of this bloody conflict, the Christmas truce of 1914, nearly brought all of these hostilities to an end. The catalyst for this impromptu détente was little more than a few small decorated trees sitting on the parapets of the front trenches of the German lines. It began Christmas Eve all along the western front from Belgium to France (with a few incidents in the east involving Russians) and by most accounts, it was the Germans or to be more precise, Bavarians and Saxons, who made the first overtures for a temporary truce in order to celebrate Weihnachten. As the candles were lit on these tiny Christmas trees and carols sung from the trenches, it must have crossed the minds of many soldiers that maybe the guys on the other side of the barbed wire weren’t murderous Huns or treacherous English, but just people missing their family and homes, much like themselves. Truth be told, with the exception of the officers, most of these so-called soldiers were little more than ordinary men – people who had been previously employed as bakers, labourers, farmers or waiters. While soldiers on both sides were enjoying packages from home and even official gifts – such as the brass Princess Mary Tin (filled with cigarettes and a small greeting card) for the allied soldiers and a ceramic Prince Wilhelm pipe for the Germans – the celebrations were understandably muted given the fact that just a few yards from the

trenches were the frozen bodies of fallen comrades, left in the tangled mess of mud and shell holes called ‘no man’s land’. After singing carols to each other the night before, a few brave soldiers raised their hands on Christmas Day and walked out towards the enemy lines, risking certain death for only the chance of a temporary truce. A few of them found it, and when they did they chose to bury their dead together, share what little Christmas fare they had, exchange trinkets such as brass buttons and listen to each other’s stories of home. So this Christmas, when you are sitting in your warm, comfortable house, basking in the glow of a decorated tree, remember that there are still hundreds of thousands of refugees caught in conflicts as far flung as Syria, Ukraine, Iraq, Somalia and

Afghanistan – people who are homeless and desperate for peace. Let’s hope that some of that same spirit that was inspired a century ago by a handful of Christmas trees in those muddy frontline trenches will again bring forth some brave soldiers willing to summon the courage to lay down their arms and risk the hope of peace. One hundred years ago, sworn enemies put down their guns, looked each other in the eye and chose to shake hands. Maybe it’s time we tried it again. Maybe this time we won’t go back to war and ‘peace on earth, goodwill to men’ will become more than a seasonal slogan, but a way of life. Mike Lascelle is a local nursery manager and gardening author (hebe_acer@hotmail.com).

Christmas is a special time

So often, through the holiday season, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made our progress possible. In this spirit, we sincerely say Thank-you! Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Chriistm Christmas sttmas is a speci speciall time time, but it can also lso be toug tough for those grieving the loss of a loved one. I can’t say I know how they feel, but I have been scared, sad and lonely at Christmas. It was Christmas Eve in 1984. I was 20 and my mom was in RCH. I was all alone and it was the he worst Christmas of my life. One good thing… I smoked my last cigarette that night. Ma passed away January 11, 1985, and to say, ‘Camille Catherine Joan Gurniak was special’ is an understatement. She was my best friend and the glue to our family. I miss herr every day. Fast forward to Christmas 1985… I had my husband, new baby girl Christine and our first home in da Ridge… Christmas 2014… we now have 2 more children, Scotty and Danny – and 2 grandsons, Bennett and Will. My point is… grief is an overwhelming process to work through. The pain in my heart is still there but it DID ease with time and there are fewer tears now. Moving forward is a choice and there are people and resources to help. Reach out and let people know how you feel and what they can do to help. Why am I saying all of this? To honour those who have passed and because two people I visited this last week passed away on the weekend and have left many sad, heavy hearts behind. While tree trimming and present buying is happening, these families are planning funerals and I wanted to pause and say, “I am so very sorry.” In the hope of adding a little holiday magic, we invite you to drive by our festive light display at 21382 Thornton Avenue. Merry Christmas and may 2015 bring you peace, good health and happiness, y Brenda Lyster

Is there a Santa Claus? W

e take pleasure in answering at once and thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of THE SUN: “Dear Editor: I am 8 years old.” “Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.” “Papa says: if you see it in THE SUN it’s so.” “Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus?” -Virginia O’Hanlon 115 West Ninety-Fifth Street VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, VIRGINIA, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an act, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measure by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance, to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that

neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but thats no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. It is all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank GOD! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, VIRGINIA, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Marauder’s Smith signs with Clan Pitt Meadows’ star post to play for Simon Fraser University y Neil Corbett sports@mapleridgenews.com

Graham Smith, the top high school basketball player in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows school district this year, will be playing for the Simon Fraser University Clan next season. “Graham has worked hard to develop his skill-set over the last couple of seasons to become one of the best players in the province,” said SFU coach James Blake, after Smith signed a letter of intent. “Graham has good vision and he is a very good passer who is going to fit our pass ahead, high pace system.” Mr. Everything for the Pitt senior boys team, the six-foot-five centre is averaging 29 points, 24 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game so far this season with Pitt Meadows secondary. Last year, as a grade 11 student, Smith broke the 24-year-old Marauders record for most points in a season with 1,401. He averaged 25.9 points per game. Smith is also a four-time B.C. provincial team member, playing on the U14, U15, U16 and U17 teams. He led Team B.C. in scoring, rebounding and assists at the U-17 Canadian National Championship tournament in Edmonton last summer, with 15.5 points per game, eight rebounds and three assists through the six games against the best high

school players in the country. Smith believes his performance in that tournament, which was heavily scouted by Canadian universities, helped him turn the heads of the SFU staff. “I did really well, and I think it helped me a lot.” Smith’s height and tenacity under the basket makes him an obvious choice to play post at the high school level, but he might play outside at the university level. He’s worked hard on that game, and says his shooting and driving from the outside have improved. The Pitt Meadows team has been ranked ninth in B.C. in the early going. “We’re looking good, and we’re going to improve a lot,” said Smith. “I’ve played with this same group since Grade 9.” Other key players with the Marauders this year are guards Mark Ashamalla, Zach Villanueva and forward Jordan Murley. Pitt would be a dominant team on the triple A circuit, but elected to go quad A when that division started last year. “If you want to play the best basketball in the province, you’ve got to play quad A, and we all wanted to do that.” Smith is an honour roll student who has been named PMSS Athlete of the Year four times. He plans to study business. Attending SFU is a family trait for the Smiths. Both of his parents and his sister are Clan alumni. “It’s always been my favourite school, and it’s the best business school around.” The Marauders are playing in the Maui Invitational Tournament this weekend.

THE NEWS/files

Pitt Meadows Marauders centre Graham Smith has signed a letter of intent to play with the SFU men’s basketball team next season.

Club hosts B.C. Scotties, Dezura in provincials Maple Ridge curling fans will find a lot of local interest in the provincial championships this year. Firstly, local skip Grant Dezura is among the 10 men’s rink to qualify for the 2015 Canadian Direct Insurance BC Men’s Curling Championship. That event will be held in February in Vernon. Phyllis remained strong and determined to live to the fullest to the very end. She kept a smile on her face even through her recent health trials. She continued to work in marketing for Today’s Seniors News Magazine and was active in her community, including her volunteer work at Ridge Meadows Hospital. She enjoyed socializing with her close friends, line dancing, and being a member of the Red Hats Society. Phyllis loved the Lord Jesus Christ and made certain that her family knew Him too. In her church she served as a layperson, was involved in women’s groups, and sang in the choir, which she did since age 13. She loved to sing. After church on Sundays you would often find her in residential care homes singing to the seniors. As well, she was a Spiritual Care Volunteer in the hospital for many years.
