Citizens support Gardom Lake plan By Barb Brouwer

markEt nEws staff

If the initial meeting is any indication, the Gardom Lake Management Plan will be a collaborative effort that engages all stakeholders. Val Jenzen, a member of the Friends of Gardom Lake, says a public meeting at the RancheroDeep Creek Firehall was very well-attended by members of the community and lake users. “It was fabulous, we even had representation from the fly-fishing group,” she says. “People are really happy that, for the most part, once they found out it is for a lake management plan that could open the door to more environmental studies. Most people are concerned about the health of the lake.”

Jenzen was ecstatic, as were other ‘Friends’ that the group will have a seat on the planning committee which is currently under construction. “I think it will be fabulous to have a voice and hopefully we can represent much of the community; we’re certainly hoping we get a lot of input from residents and users,” she says with enthusiasm. “It’s just so exciting to hear there’s going to be involvement and people are going to have discussions about the lake, because it’s a wonderful little lake.” Jenzen says the November meeting addressed three main concerns. In terms of priority, water quality was first, second was the environment as a whole, including the foreshore, wildlife, etcetera and the third was human impacts.

The Friends of Gardom Lake are also thrilled that the Fraser Basin Council has been hired to co-ordinate the plan, whose bill is being footed by the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. “I think they’re the right people for the job,” she says. That’s music to Tracy Thomas’ ears. The assistant regional manager is the lead for Fraser Basin Council on this project and was equally impressed with the inaugural meeting. “I think the meeting was great; people had a positive vibe and are looking forward to a planning process where they feel included,” she See Fraser Basin on page 2

Fraser Basin to develop plan Continued from front says, referring to some past issues and the relief several people expressed about a third party co-ordinating the process. “They said they’re excited and they showed up on a horrible, snowy night.” Thomas says a lot of feedback was collected from the 50 or so people who attended, with more from an online survey on the Fraser Basin Council website. “We collected what people’s values are

and it was easy to get a long list of what they don’t like,” she says. “But we also learned a lot about what they value too.” Columbia Shuswap Regional District board members gave unanimous approval to entering into an agreement with the Fraser Basin Council to facilitate and develop a management plan for the lake at their November board meeting. At the June 2013 board meeting, directors approved up to $35,000 in funds from

the Area D Community Works Fund for development of the plan, contingent on the province providing at least one-third of the cost. When provincial funding was denied earlier this year, directors agreed to up the ante to a maximum $40,000. “We have been contracted to write a plan for May…” says Thomas, noting other sources of funding (perhaps community groups) will be sought during the process. “We’re trying to man-

age expectations and have some quick wins on the ground.”

Citizens group disputes safety code By Martha Wickett

MARKET NEWS STAFF

“I am quite comfortable with Safety Code 6.” Mayor Nancy Cooper responded several times with this statement when asked by members of Citizens for Safe Technology about council’s plans surrounding Wi-Fi and cell towers. At the Dec. 8 council meeting, during the question and answer period, resident Shelley Corbin asked if council would be willing to work with her and others as an advocacy group.

Cooper replied: I am quite comfortable with Safety Code 6, so thank you.” Safety Code 6 outlines what Health Canada considers the safe human exposure limits to radio-frequency electromagnetic energy. The federal website states the limits “are based on an ongoing review of published scientific studies, including both internal and external authoritative reviews of the scientific literature, as well as Health Canada’s own research.” The website states the current version

of Safety Code 6 is based on information gathered up to August 2009. Canoe resident Howard Halleck asked about details of a meeting council committed to hold in January to discuss cell phone towers. He said his group needs to know the framework as members will be bringing in a specialist. City staff and the mayor said the guidelines, time and date are yet to be established. Halleck expressed his consternation with relying on Safety Code 6.

“I have a lot of information about Safety Code 6 that would take away a lot of that comfort from you…,” he said. Cooper remarked: “Safety Code 6 is a federal government regulation and I’m quite comfortable with it.” Sorrento resident Una St. Clair asked why council is holding a meeting if there’s no desire to work with the public. Cooper replied: We will look at it, we’ll listen to what you have to say and we’ll go from there.”

City’s contribution not justified Let me get this straight. The City of Salmon Arm makes a huge donation to the Roots and Blues committee. Then the committee turns around and gives this money to the Salmon Arm patrons of said festival (Salmon Arm residents get Roots and Blues deal, Dec. 12 Market News). So a portion of my tax dollars are going to subsidize patrons of the R&B festival, many of whom may be much wealthi-

er than I am. I ask any members of city council and any member of the R&B festival to give me justification for such action. As a non-patron of the R&B event, I am still paying for it. If the festival cannot be self-sufficient with the money they take in, they need to increase the ticket price. And city council needs to give their head a shake. Next we will have the Silverbacks coming for a handout, then the

Shuswap Theatre, then the dance society, then the lacrosse league, then the tiddlywinks society and on and on it goes. I appreciate the fact the city does a good job of snow removal as well as some other services. That is their mandate and that is what they need to focus on. City councils are not charity dispensers, they are service providers.

Price disparity in crosshairs

Are there legitimate reasons the price of so many identical items varies greatly between Canada and the United States? If a laptop computer in Canada costs $200 more than its identical counterpart in the U.S., can retailers offer an explanation that will make sense to consumers? More importantly, can retailers convince the federal government there is logic behind price disparities? They had better be able to as the Conservative government has taken steps to find out if the price gap equates to gouging. This week, Industry Minister James Moore announced details of legislation that will give the Commissioner of Competition the power to convince companies to lower the price on items sold in Canada. Many reasons have been cited for the disparity — taxes, the exchange rate and the wages paid in each country. However, as the Conservatives noted in their 2014 budget, independent studies verified Canadians were paying between 10 and 25 per cent more than Americans for most products in 2011. That fact remained after higher Canadian sales taxes and exchange-rate adjustments were calculated. A few years ago, when the Canadian dollar reached par with the U.S. greenback (and even rose higher in value), booksellers announced a change in pricing. Books that were historically much more expensive in Canada had their prices changed to match the cover price on the titles sold south of the border. If the Conservative government finds Canadians are paying more for a product that is cheaper in the U.S. simply because companies can get away with it, perhaps electronics and other goods will see similar price-tag changes. It would be one more reason to continue to shop local — from coast to coast to coast. -Kamloops This Week

OpiniOn

Just trying to get through the rest of winter Six long months of freezing cold temperatures, drifting snow and bleak grey skies. No wonder they’ve come up with a ‘medical condition’ for… let’s just say for certain people, myself included, who are unable to fully appreciate winter in all its so-called glory: Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. Now, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I’m sad about winter, but I’m certainly not a big fan. According to medical definition, SAD is a condition or disorder which involves episodes of depression that occur at specific times of the year, most often starting in the fall and continuing on though the winter months and into spring. Symptoms may include a loss in energy and ability to concentrate, a loss of interest in work and/ or other activities, as well as lethargy, social withdrawal and general irritability. Apparently, there is no real cure for SAD, although doctors will attempt to make a diagnosis based on a history of symptoms, along with a physical exam and blood tests to rule out other

The GreaT OuTdOOrs James Murray disorders that are similar to SAD. Light therapy, using special fluorescent lights that duplicate sunlight is a popular remedy/therapy used by some people who are suffering from SAD. Taking long walks during the daylight hours and getting lots of exercise will also help alleviate symptoms, but that would mean having to go out in the cold, so I don’t really see the point. Besides, while SAD does usually improve more quickly with treatment, most symptoms seem to get better on their own with a change of seasons. I sure hope I don’t start getting any of the symptoms of SAD. Personally, I’ve always

felt there should be some sort of acronym for people who, although not clinically depressed, are nevertheless not really big fans of winter – people with more of an attitude towards winter than a medical condition. They could get together during the winter months, sit around at McDonald’s and/or Tim Hortons in the mornings, drink coffee and gripe about winter. Once there, they could gripe about all sorts of things other than winter, such as potholes in the roads, current affairs and/or city council, the price of getting winter tires put on (which technically would still be griping about winter), television re-runs, global warming and the fact they have to pay for their coffee refills. I’ve also often wondered why we couldn’t change from the current Julian calendar to one where we go directly from September to March or April, thereby doing away with the winter months altogether. September is a good fishing month so it could be at least twice as long and spring could last from chironomid season

right through to the mayfly and early caddis hatches. Summer could be extended so that people could take their holidays when the roads are free of snow. Service stations, that may have lost out on winter sales, would be happy because they could make up revenues by gouging people at the gas pumps year round instead of on long weekends like they used to. Oh, sorry they’re already doing that here in Salmon Arm. Gee, now I am starting to feel a little depressed about winter. I hope it’s not the onset of SAD. The sky sure is grey. Anybody know what the longrange weather forecast is for the Southern Interior? What’s that Johnny Cash song where he sings, “I ain’t seen the sunshine since I don’t remember when.” I think I’m finally starting to understand Sam McGee. I mean who he really was as a person and what drove him as an individual. Four more months of winter. I don’t know if I can make it. I wonder where I could get one of those light therapy lamps.

Grants support age-friendly projects The Columbia-Shuswap Regional District and the District of Sicamous have each been awarded $20,000 agefriendly community planning and project grants to help support local strategies to help seniors stay mobile, physically active, socially connected and healthy. The CSRD will use the funding to raise awareness of the services and supports currently available to older adults in the community and to determine what additional resources are needed going forward. Sicamous will use the grant to explore and enhance age-friendly planning to help improve the quality of life

of seniors in the community. “Seniors are a fastgrowing demographic in B.C., and it is important that communities support the needs of older adults,” said Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo. “Both grants will help Sicamous and communities in the regional district plan and develop programs so older adults can live healthy and independent lives.” The age-friendly community planning and project grant program is a partnership between the provincial government and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. For the 2015 grants, local governments were

encouraged to consider projects that complement Accessibility 2024 and other provincial priorities for seniors, such as dementia support, elder abuse prevention and non-medical home supports. Accessibility 2024 is the government’s 10year plan to make B.C. the most progressive place for people with disabilities in Canada. Of the 28 funded projects, 12 projects include a focus on accessibility. Other successful applicants will specifically address issues facing seniors in rural communities. Including this announcement, more than 135 local governments throughout B.C. have

received at least one grant, and more than 225 projects have been funded. Alcoholics Anonymous www.bcyukonaa.org

n The cast of Sorrento Elementary sing A Pirate Christmas under the direction of music teacher Giles Borland during one of two performances held on Thursday, Dec. 11. PHOTO CONTRIBUTED

School wins project funding A Grade 5 class from Sorrento Elementary has received a $1,000 award from BC Hydro’s Community Champions program to support a conservation project in their school. The class will use the money to explore how wilderness near their school can be used to promote well-being and respect for the environment. “We have a little forest attached to our school – we would promote the concepts of “mini escapes” from the fast-paced, heavily structured daily life,” states teacher Ian Landy in Sorrento Elementary’s submission to BC Hydro.” The intention of the project is to create an awareness of the ben-

efits of being outside, and to educate the school’s “entire learning community on sustainable practices and uses of our local woods and watershed (especially being so close to Shuswap Lake).” The expected benefit of the project, states Landy, is it will help to “raise awareness of prominence of anxiety within our learning community (and indeed in much of B.C. education,) and how to blend our local environment with our strategies on how to self-regulate with our students so that they can go to local service groups and then introduce them to similar strategies (including some signage in our local woods with ideas/

strategies that can be tried).” The Community Champions Program supports not-for-profit organizations across British Columbia that show lasting commitment to the environment and sustainability. Classrooms, kindergarten to Grade 12, vote for the not-forprofit video submission that most inspires them to take action. As part of their vote, classrooms propose a

conservation project that they wish to undertake, which places them in a random draw. Twenty-five classrooms are selected to win $1,000 to help fund their school project. Santa’s choice for fresh, authentic Chinese food!

n The Shuswap Singers perform against a backdrop of poinsettias at First United Church on Sunday, Dec. 14.

Give gift of entertainment Salmon Arm is a culturally rich community, so why not consider a gift that will entertain? How about a Shuswap Theatre Gift Card? You pick the amount and it can be used as partial or full payment for any Shuswap Theatre event that offers online ticket sales. The gift cards have no expiry date and may be redeemed either online, at Intwined Fibre Arts where the gift cards are available, or at the door. Any unused portion is automatically carried forward for a future event. One hot event that takes place in the cold of winter, and sells out quickly, is the Shuswap Trail Alliance’s fundraising (emphasis on the fun) Trail Party and Silent Auction that takes place on Friday, Feb. 6. Tickets are available at Skookum Cycle & Ski and Ridetech. How about looking ahead to the long, hot days of summer and the annual Roots and Blues Festival? Earlybird prices are in effect and

tickets are available at www.rootsandblues.ca, or by calling 250-8334096. Don’t forget the great savings on Salmar movie passbooks, where you purchase six tickets for the price of five. Tickets are good for any show. Passbooks can be purchased at Salmar Grand Cinemas, The Salmar Classic Theatre and Lucky’s in Centenoka Park Mall. The fan base for two of the Salmar’s programs are growing quickly. Opera is broadcast direct from New York’s Metropolitan Opera to the big screen at the Salmar Classic. The Dance Performances series at the Classic offers productions from the world’s elite ballet corps. Single tickets are available for both programs as are season’s passes, and are available at the Salmar Grand Cinemas. Bolshoi Ballet’s much loved Christmas classic The Nutcracker will be shown at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21.

Hunkering down for the Christmas holidays

Gaia GardeninG Margo Westaway

Wow – it’s winter already and now we can finally call it a wrap! Late fall/early winter is like a spring movie in reverse, when everything we had put out – hoses, ornaments, flower pots, porch swings, tools, etc. – has to be put away again. Then we batten down the hatches before the ice and snow arrive. This year we had a bit of a temperature swing thing happening, so the stinkbugs didn’t know whether they were coming or going and neither did I. My mantra is always “the more I do now, the less I have to do later.” So before my trip to Maui, I was ‘making hay while the sun shines,’ busily working on my garden projects in the cold. I figured that was it for the year, but I still had another week when I got back to gather about 100 bags of leaves, 60 more buckets of road sand and take four full truckloads of branches to the dump after my tree guy came to top off all the leaders to give us our beautiful

view of the lake back. When it’s truly time for me to call it quits, I clean and vacuum out my poor old car, which is usually full of sand, granite dust, grass, leaf bits, dirt and soil. (Thankfully, I have a very tolerant husband.) Now we can chill out and enjoy the beauty of the snow on red berries, the swans on the lake, the warmth of the fire and flake out on the couch with a nice cuppa tea and a good book or magazine. But winter – as we all know – can be a bit of a trial too, dealing with snow, slippery ice, squirrels moving in, lines freezing up, power outages, damaged plants and having the possibility of a heartstopping ‘near ditch or dip’ experience like I did this month coming along Mara Lake on a slushy road – yikes! There’s something to be said about being a snowbird. Christmas arrived a little early when an unexpected gift was mailed to me (a little garden columnist perk) in the form of a brand new book titled, Down To Earth – Cold Climate Gardens & Their Keepers, written by a couple of gals from the Elk Valley region in B.C. So I will read that one first. (I always make a little joke that scientific opinions are so polarized about climate change and

whether we’re going to roast or freeze in a mini ice age, that I don’t know whether I should be planting cactuses or buying a greenhouse.) The one book to me that’s a must-have, is the Chicken Soup for the Gardener’s Soul, which has so many beautiful and touching stories in it that truly capture the spirit of those who care and tend the earth’s plants and soil, as well as their fellow human beings. So make sure you have a box of hankies handy if you get one. My favourite thing to do now is to linger as long as I can in our lovely garden stores, which are so pretty and full of goodies and tools that I can buy for my gardeny friends and family and also to make a wish list for myself. My circle need not look any farther than a bookstore and one of those

FROM THE HILL Colin Mayes Our government introduced a new phase of the Homelessness Partnering Strategy (HPS). Despite false claims that funding has been cut, we’ve renewed funding under this program for the next five years, with a focus on a “Housing First” approach. Through this renewed commitment, communities will continue to receive the same amount of funding for programs to prevent and reduce homelessness as they did previously. Housing First is a proven, evidence-based model and will deliver better results for the most vulnerable. It worked internationally and has shown clear success where it has been tried in pilot projects here in Canada. Housing First involves moving homeless individuals from the streets and shortterm shelters into immediate and permanent housing, while offering support for addictions, mental illnesses and life skills development. Evidence has shown that it’s more effective to address issues, such as lack of education

and training and mental health or substance abuse issues, when the individual is first in stable housing. While Housing First will be the cornerstone of our new HPS, communities will retain flexibility to invest in other proven approaches that reduce homelessness at the local lev-

el, such as shelters and transitional housing. The Opposition frequently criticizes our Conservative initiatives, including Housing First, in spite of the international evidence of its effectiveness. But that’s because – aside from raising taxes and legalizing marijuana – they don’t actually have

any ideas of their own. Our government makes no apologies and is proud to be ensuring hard-working taxpayer dollars are directed to where they will have the largest, long-term impact. - Colin Mayes is the member of Parliament for Okanagan- Shuswap.

Columbia Shuswap Regional District GET INVOLVED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT AND OPERATION OF YOUR COMMUNITY FIRE SERVICES AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) invites residents of Area C who would like to serve on their Sub-Regional Fire Services Advisory Committee to complete and return an Expression of Interest Form. Forms, along with the Committee Terms of Reference, are available on the CSRD website at www.csrd.bc.ca/inside-csrd/application-forms or by contacting the Operations Management Department listed below. CSRD staff will review all submissions and schedule meetings with all potential applicants in January, 2015. The Advisory Committee will assist the CSRD by ensuring that it receives thoughtful and comprehensive advice from a representative group of individuals living within the Fire Suppression Service Areas with local knowledge and interest in the fire service needs of the community. Committee members will typically meet 2 - 3 times per year throughout the service area. Term of office of committee members is three years in duration, commencing on the first scheduled meeting of 2015. Individuals who best satisfy the following requirements will be recommended to the CSRD Board of Directors for appointment: • Interest, leadership and passion for enhancing community fire services; • Desire to share knowledge and experience in a range of subjects relevant to fire services planning and development; and • Must be age of majority and ordinarily a resident in the relevant participating Fire Suppression Service Area.

Reconnecting young people with the natural environment

ShuSwap paSSion Jim Cooperman Nature deficit disorder may be more of a metaphor than a legitimate physiological or psychological condition. However it does describe a growing concern about modern society’s disconnection with nature as time in front of digital devices increases. Fortunately, an organization has formed in the Shuswap to address these concerns by fostering opportunities for young people to experience and learn about our natural environment. The Shuswap Outdoor Learning Foundation was founded in the spring of 2013 and one year later it received charitable status. The foundation provides outdoor learning opportunities via two initiatives, the Shuswap Wild Wonders summer

camps and the outdoor education program within School District #83. Beginning in 2012, the Shuswap Wild Wonders summer camps have provided outstanding outdoor experiences for youngsters aged six to 12. Last summer, there were four camps, including two with overnight camping. There are five objectives for the camps, beginning with the most important, safety and skill development. Once the children learn to stay together on trails, avoid risks and gain respect for nature they move on to improving their communication skills, developing trust and solving problems. After they complete this team building phase they proceed to enhance their connection to nature through experience and discovery. As they link their days to nature, they begin to learn the names for local flora and fauna and improve their understanding of ecology, hydrology and geology. The final objective is stewardship, as the students develop an ethic of care for nature and eventually participate in

restoration activities. The number of camps has grown exponentially, beginning with one in 2012, and occur at a number of sites, including the Larch Hills, White Lake, Mt. Ida, Perry River and the Enderby Cliffs. The response has been very positive, with parents exclaiming how their children have changed and are now eager to be outside to listen to the birds and identify plants. The instructors are elated, as their goal is for these camps to be a transformative experience for the children. Given that each Shuswap Wild Wonder camp can only accommodate from 12 to 18 children, in order to reach more students, the foundation also partners with the school district to support the Outdoor Awesome Days, first in 2013 at Carlin with 135 students and this year at Little Mountain Park with 310 students. Three professional development days were also organized to provide training for teachers to foster outdoor education in the school district, in part by promoting the Shuswap’s

growing network of trails as outdoor classrooms. In addition, last year teachers at Bastion school set up an outdoor classroom in the small forest on the school grounds using tarps and ropes and stumps for chairs. Students spent an entire week receiving their lessons outside in April and many are eager to repeat the project this spring. The foundation is also in the early stages of an ambitious initiative to develop an outdoor education centre along the Perry River. It would be adjacent to the new North Fork Wild Regional Park just above the highway bridge in Malakwa. Peter Jennings, who still lives there, donated his property to the regional district, which is in the process of improving the many trails that he originally designed and helped build. The Shuswap is fortunate that seven young, forward- thinking teachers and naturalists have dedicated their time and effort to provide outdoor learning opportunities and that they received support from

the Shuswap Trail Alliance. These leaders include biologist Jeremy Ayotte and teachers Geoff Styles and Ceren Caner, who in just three years have developed

an outstanding service to our community. As their efforts expand, more young people will spend time outdoors and, as a result, improve their physical and emo-

tional health, creativity and interpersonal relationships, as well as care more about the Shuswap environment. Learn more at www. outdoorlearning.ca.

Time to think snow I would like to report powder snow in the Larch Hills and trackset ski trails throughout – but unfortunately that would be a stretch. Thankfully, there is snow in the Larch Hills but we need a good dump of fresh snow to get up to speed. With the ground well frozen we’ll be well underway when it does snow. Perhaps that will be our Christmas gift! I’m hoping to do a lot of skiing over the Christmas holidays. It’s always great fun to be one of the Trail Hosts at the chalet, greeting and chatting up local skiers and skiers visiting from afar. Skate skiing seems to be the technique of choice under these challenging conditions. From the trail report on the website, Tuesday, Dec. 16, skilarchhills. ca. Thanks to Chris, we have a report on conditions: “I was up today around 10:30, and the skate skiing above the South Hub on Larch Hills Road was great. The groomer had done a fantastic job. Coming down Larch Lake Loop was a little sketchy and

TRAIL TALES Marcia Beckner hair-raising in places, but it was mostly good. Not only that, the sun was shining, so it was a great day. Thanks to you and the groomers for doing such a great job.” In spite of the shortage of snow, the Larch Hills Nordic Society registrar reports 700 members in the club. It shows great support for our area, the programs, the trail system – and hope/faith that we will indeed ultimately have a snowy winter. We do have a number of events planned, one of which ran this past weekend. The Santa Cruise happened on Sunday with the participants taking part in an auction post-race in the chalet, raising more than $2,700 for the various food banks in

the area. Next, on Dec. 27-28 weekend, is the Okanagan Cup #3&4, with the annual Larch Hills Fun Race incorporated into Sunday’s event. A few days later, we will be hosting the popular Lantern Ski, Tuesday, Dec. 30. From 5 to 9 p.m., skiers will have the opportunity to ski around the approximately fivekilometre course lit by lanterns. A magical event! There is a short course for kids and, of course, the spectacular candlelit Christmas tree put up by Alois Schonnenberger along the trail. Bring along your leftover Christmas treats for the goodie table. Next on the calendar is the Larch Hills premier event – the Reino Keski-Salmi Loppet, on Saturday, Jan. 17. Now into its 31st year, the loppet has attracted thousands of skiers over the three decades and raised thousands of dollars for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon. Be sure to sign up for the event on Zone 4 – and THINK SNOW for the next three weeks! The

Renowned ’70s rocker Meatloaf had a huge hit with “Two out of Three ain’t Bad” and that’s the way the puck bounced for the Heat this past week. Wednesday the 10th the team visited the Sicamous Eagles and served up a golf expression Mulligan, as everything that could go wrong did, resulting in a 4-0 loss. So the Heat had little more than a day to regroup prior to visiting the Summerland Steam on Friday the 12th. In this contest things were hot and testy, with the Heat led by goalie Michael Byer, squeaking out a huge 4-3 victory. In the first period, it was Cody Hodges from Alex Durbeniuk and Trevor Okino. In the second, Travis Beaubien scored with help from Cole Perison and Wesley Matsuda. In the third, assistant captain Matsuda took advantage of a goaltender error to put the sides even on a timely unassisted marker from the side boards, which led to a beauty of a gamewinner from the stick of Captain Kaleb Boyle from Kolten Moore and

The Cariboo Cowboys and the Shuswap’s Hottest Product have a fierce divisional rivalry. On this day, the Heat played disciplined, team-first hockey and spanked the hosts 4-1. Once again led by

“Stretch” Byer in the twine, it was time for a good old-fashioned Chase-style smackdown. The Heat struck twice as the iron was hot, getting a pair in the first. It was Mostat from Tommy Brown and Okino, and then Beaubien from Okino. In the second, Austin Willier scored assisted by Zachary Fournier and Durbeniuk. Hodges put a bow on the win with an empty netter in the third from Connor Harding.

Tipping fees at landfill to rise The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is raising tipping fees for household refuse as well as demolition, land-clearing and construction (DLC) waste beginning January 2015 at all waste facilities in the TNRD. A TNRD news release states that the tipping fees for household refuse will go from $60 per tonne to $80 per tonne, and tipping fees for DLC waste will go from $120 per tonne to $160 per tonne, as per a new bylaw that was adopted by the TNRD board of directors.

Also in effect as of January 2015, any amount of household garbage under 50 kg will again be charged $1 per bag, up to four bags, or 50 kg. Any amount greater than 50 kg will be charged at the $80/tonne rate. The new fee structure for household waste gives customers incentive to reduce and recycle while saving landfill space. Diverting material from the landfill saves space for material that truly belongs there and keeps landfills open for as long as possible. The fee structure also

gives customers the ability to save money by source-separating DLC waste. A separate lower fee will be applied to select waste streams if they are separated. The new fees will make TNRD fees comparable to other regional districts in the southern Interior. Presently, the TNRD has some of the lowest fees in the southern Interior. For more information, contact Jamie Vieira, manager of environmental services at 250-377-8673, jvieira@tnrd.ca, or go to tnrd.ca

This was the second step in the “steak and lobster quest.” The Heat closed out 2014 with the “Cookie Extravaganza” home game on Wednesday the 17th, prior to hitting the highway to play the Spokane Braves and the Grand Forks Border Bruins. The Christmas break follows and the Heat wish their community, fans and billet families a “goal-filled” festive season for all!

Band’s water system upgraded On Dec. 15, Okanagan Shuswap MP Colin Mayes helped celebrate the completion of upgraded water systems for the Little Shuswap Lake Band and Okanagan Indian Band. Each community received new water wells, distribution and supply lines, and a pump house and treatment system. Okanagan Indian Band’s system also received a new reservoir. For the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band, the fund-

ing helped to connect two water systems between the main community and the north subdivision which will maximize water quality, quantity and fire protection. This $9.9 million investment by the federal government will allow both First Nations to better provide their members with clean, safe drinking water. Funding for the upgraded water systems came from Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada:

Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band’s water system was $5,291,885 and the band invested an additional $135,230. Chief Oliver Arnouse of the Little Shuswap Lake Indian Band stated: “This project is indicative of the shared commitment between governments to provide safe drinking water for our community. Things grow where water flows and the upgraded water system will certainly help our community

grow as we complete our land use plan and work towards further upgrades to our infrastructure. We thank the government for the investment and look forward to future collaborations to build capital projects and to build relationships.” Remarked Mayes: “We recognize that improving water and wastewater systems on reserve is crucial to supporting healthy, self-sufficient and prosperous First Nation communities...”

What’s New in Health & Wellness 250-804-2854

The Chase Rotary Club has been very busy this fall. In September, we had our semi-annual Food Drive in Chase to support the Chase Hamper Society. We delivered “Yellow Bags of Help” to our community through the Shuswap Market News, and then did a sweep of the residential areas of Chase to pick up donations of food. We collected 5,000 pounds of food, through the cooperation of Safety Mart Foods and People’s Food and Drugs, and the residential pick up. In October, Chase Rotary had our concession trailer at the Adams River Sockeye Run from October

3 to October 26. We manned the trailer from 8 AM to 4 PM, 7 days a week, with the help of Rotary clubs of Kamloops, Salmon Arm, and Vernon, the Chase Curling Club, and our own Chase Rotarians, and we also had Governor Bruce Falkins and his wife Donna from Kelowna attend to give our little club a helping hand. The funds generated are already finding their way to help those in need in Chase. We were also able to help out our Kamloops Rotarians by donating to a water project in Uganda. Dr. Stan Fike spoke to us about the need for help, and we were happy

to help out with this very much needed International project.

F.G. “PAT” SHIRLEY It is with great sadness we mourn the passing of Pat Shirley. Born January 23rd, 1924 and passed away December 12th, 2014 at age of 90. A pioneer of Salmon Arm, Pat was born to George and Helen Shirley who settled in Salmon Arm from England in the early 1900’s. Pat’s father George was an original member of the Salmon Arm Fire Brigade serving from 1913 until 1944 and Pat followed in his footsteps dedicating much of his life to the Fire Department serving 40 plus years as master mechanic, Assistant Chief and Chief of Fire Hall # 3. He served as career Deputy Chief\Fire Prevention Officer for Salmon Arm until retirement in 1989, at which point he was recognized as an honorary life member. Pat was also presented with an honorary life member designation from the Volunteer Firefighters Association of British Columbia and a 40 year fire service exemplary service medal from the Federal Government of Canada. As a young man he served in the Arm Forces overseas during World War II and upon his return married June Lidstone in 1951. He had a natural mechanical ability and an obsession with the automobile. Pat apprenticed and became a certified mechanic working at local garages including many years at Salmon Arm Motors as head mechanic & service manager. In 1979 he became a business partner with son Jim at Salmon Arm Texaco. Pat worked as mechanic\owner of Texaco until 1983 when he went to work fulltime for the Fire Department and although leaving the automobile business, this didn’t stop him from enjoying driving and restoring antique automobiles and was proud to participate in over 100 parades. He was also a long time member of the Vintage Car Club of Canada and an original member of the Shuswap Chapter. Pat was a great historian of Salmon Arm with vast knowledge of places, people and the automobiles they drove. He maintained records of his own and assisted many others with clarification of days gone by. Pat was pre-deceased by wife June in 1993 and is survived by son Jim (Lorna) of Salmon Arm, daughter Pam (Glen Van Horne) of Campbell River and son’s Brad (Jane) and Greg (Debbie) of Salmon Arm, 8 grandchildren, 6 great grand children and great companion Sharon Thorpe.
