The Teddy Bear class from Christian Life Children’s Centre got into the Christmas spirit Wednesday morning wearing reindeer antlers during a field trip to Merecroft Village.

The family of a man killed in Campbell River in October is frustrated by the lack of any arrests in the case. “I think everybody is (frustrated),” said Petrina Hildebrand, the sister of Joshua Billy, 37, who was found dead in a duplex carport on Alpine Road at Dogwood Street on Oct. 18. Not only has there been a lack of any arrests, the police have not been forthcoming with any information, Hildebrand said. The only confirmation they can get is that no arrest has been made and that the Vancouver Island Major Crimes Unit is working on it. “At the end of the day, we trust the integrity of the investigation but they better be moving along because time is ticking,” Hildebrand said. A statement from the Campbell River RCMP on Thursday confirmed they were investigating a homicide but the cause of death was being withheld “to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation.” “We have a team of dedicated,

Billy: Family seeks answers Continued from Pg. 1

experienced officers committed to this investigation. They have been working tirelessly and are making advancements towards solving this crime,” said Inspector Jeff Preston, officer in charge of the Campbell River RCMP Detachment. Hildebrand and other family members have been active in Campbell River putting up posters asking for anybody with any information about the case to come forward. Hildebrand, a resident of Victoria, often hears rumours when she’s in Campbell River putting up the posters. People come up to her and say things but won’t

give their names. “It’s frustrating because (we say) like, ‘who are you’ and they won’t say anything,” Hildebrand said. If these people are circulating stories about what supposedly happened, then Hildebrand wonders whether they’re going to the police with them. And the disturbing part is that whoever perpetrated this crime may still be at large in the community. “The scary reality is that these people are loose in your community and that’s concerning for everybody,” Hildebrand said. The family is urging people to go to the police with any information. “Definitely just let the

community know we do need answers. We do need to let the community know,” Hildebrand said. “Definitely urge anybody that knows something to come forward and call the RCMP directly.” A 911 call was made at 8:26 a.m. Oct 18. Hildebrand doesn’t know who made the call but she does think that the body was laying in the carport beside one of the busiest streets in Campbell River and that somebody driving by may have seen something. Hildebrand said Billy was also seen at the Willow Point 7-11 the night before around 11 p.m. Again, they’re hoping somebody saw him and can confirm that.

Billy is the father of six children who moved to Campbell River in 1988. “We’re hoping that people will understand that Joshua was a very selfless man,” Hildebrand said. “He was very generous with his time.” She said the fact that his family has been out putting up posters keeping the awareness of the case alive is an indication of how strong a family Billy has behind him and is indicative of what kind of person he was. Hildebrand wants the community to consider that Billy’s children are suffering through not only the loss of their father but also the pain of waiting and knowing whoever did this has not been caught.

Police are investigating the death of Joshua Billy.

Rotary Club’s March for Children takes to the streets this Saturday. Volunteers will be strategically positioned around the city collecting donations that go towards Campbell River Hospital. The proceeds typically help purchase equip-

ment for the maternity department at the hospital. Last year, $11,296 was raised through the March for Children and the money went towards the purchase of an Infant Stabilette which is used to perform a baby’s first exam and health care measurements.

When t he March began in Campbell River in 1954, all of the funds went to the B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. In 1994, local Rotarians decided the money should stay in the community and since then, the March for Children has raised more

than $350,000. Anyone who would like to donate this year can give their donation to one of several volunteers who will be stationed at Discovery Foods in Willow Point, Thrifty’s at 13th Avenue and Ironwood, and in Tyee Plaza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at all locations.

Our View

Navy booze police change is a smart idea The presence of cheap or free alcohol on Royal Canadian Navy ships is a tradition that goes back generations. We say: Navy It can likely be traced back to when the captains of sailing ships heading out for ships are 24/7 voyages to new lands felt it prudent to workplaces after long carry rum on board to give crew members all something to look forward to during long stretches at sea, and to keep them from going stir crazy. While ships and personnel in today’s navy

still spend extended times at sea away from home and family, the need for a loose liquor policy on board is a vestige from the past that has long outlived its pragmatic need. There will no doubt be crew members who will grumble about the move announced by the RCN last week to ban selfserve drinking while its ships are at sea or in port. The change was one of a variety of recommendations stemming from an Internal Review of Personal Conduct, launched after shorebound charges relating to drunken misconduct were lodged against three members of HMCS Whitehorse on exercise

in San Diego this past summer. That said, the navy realizes that the vast majority of personnel behave respectfully when imbibing on board or in port. As such, one recommendation is to offer alcohol on ships for special occasions, but for a higher price than in past and never in a self-serve scenario. The military is designed to be structured and disciplineoriented – that’s why many people join in the first place. Letting that structure loosen over booze is simply not acceptable. -Black Press

Letters

Timing may relate to poor turnouts I read with interest Mike Davies’ December 17 article re: North Island Hospitals Project consultations. Perhaps the poor attendance isn’t so much due to lack of interest but rather the timing of these events. Of those I’ve seen advertised, they’re always held in the evening. I would love to attend an information session, however, as a senior, I don’t like to drive at night any more, particularly at this time of year when it’s dark so early. If there was an opportunity to attend a morning or afternoon event, I suspect the turn-out might better reflect the community’s interest. Why not try it once and see? Darlyne Shane Campbell River

Too much hatred in the world, and too little empathy I cried in my car again this week as I listened to the news on the radio. I’m probably a bit more emotional than most people (I cried at the end of Terminator 2, for example. Hey, shut up! It was sad!), and sometimes the slow buildup of depressing news about people being terrible to each other just suddenly pushes those emotions over the edge. This time it was hatred. Mike Davies I just don’t understand hatred. Mike’s Musings I mean sure, I say I hate things all the On Twitter: time. @PaperguyDavies I say I hate people who don’t follow the miked@campbellrivermirror.com rules of the road, don’t use their turn signals or just sit there when it’s their turn to go at a four-way stop. I say I hate the lights on Dogwood

Street. I say I hate vegetables. I say I hate Bubba Watson. But I don’t actually hate any of these things, really, because hate is a word that should be reserved for the angry emotion that causes people to intentionally harm others. I’m not about to intentionally cause harm to others, especially for a reason as petty as them not knowing how to work a four-way stop. There are a ton of you here, by the way, who don’t know how to work a four-way stop. But I digress... Hate should be a term reserved for the feeling the gunmen had when they walked into a school in Pakistan this

week and started killing children in a gymnasium. That’s hate. It’s the emotion that caused Man Haron Monis to take the staff and patrons of a café in Sydney hostage this week. That’s hate. But it’s also the emotion that causes people every day to make decisions that affect others negatively, intentionally causing harm in other ways. It’s the emotion that causes pain in the schoolyard, when one child has a disability and the others have no empathy. It’s what people feel when they see a Facebook post where someone is asking for help, and instead of helping, they judge and mock and jeer.

Wait…is hate actually just the extreme end of ignorance? I only ask because I was about to say that hate is also the thing that makes people pass (or fail to pass) legislation that keeps inequality so prevalent in our world, but I think that might actually be more about a lack of willingness to consider the perspective of others – which wouldn’t actually be hate, it would be ignorance. And come to think of it, that’s the same reason that people like Man Haron Monis did what he did in Australia – he couldn’t see the world from anyone else’s perspective, and was ready to kill (and die) rather than do so.

Family still searching for missing young man ALISTAIR TAYLOR CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The family of a Campbell River man is seeking his whereabouts. Trevor Lyttle, 26, was last confirmed seen on Sunday, Dec. 7 when he told his parents that he wanted to feed a deer on their Steelhead Road property. “My parents and their neighbour were just having a little breakfast and

he just kind of got up and wandered around the property,” said his

brother Kerry. He saw the deer and wanted to feed it. So his neighbours

said they had some food in their house he could feed it with. He went to get the food. “And that was the last anybody saw of him,” Kerry said. A missing person report has been filed and the family have asked for help on Facebook and have put up posters around town. Campbell River RCMP have received several tips since then and are

following all leads, Cpl Poppy Hallam said. There was a possible sighting on Sierra Drive near Sequoia Springs Golf Course on Sunday, Dec. 14 around 4:30 p.m. Trevor was last seen wearing a grey toque, blue or black jeans and a

It’s the reason people spout off about things they don’t know about, intentionally causing emotional pain to others. It comes off as hate, and it fits my above definition

(the angry emotion that causes people to intentionally harm others), but it’s actually just an inability and unwillingness to pursue empathy. So let’s make a conscious effort to view

things from other perspectives, shall we? Can we at least recognize we don’t know how other people have come to see the world how they do, or the circumstances that have led them to where

Will you be ready when ‘The Big One’ hits? MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

If the ground starts shaking enough that you’re having trouble standing and you’re in a low-lying area that may be susceptible to flooding, that’s your cue to evacuate. There will not be another warning, and you may not have long to get to high ground. That’s one of the messages passed on to the community at a series of information sessions held over the past week at the Tidemark Theatre. Thanks to a recent study by BC Hydro, we now know more about the effects of a major ear thquake on the Campbell River dam system and the possible ramifications of dam failure. “We had information on potential for ground movements,” BC Hydro representative Steven Wilson said at Mon-

day’s information session, “but that work was expiring and becoming outdated as of 2007,” he said, which spurred the recently-released study – which took six years and cost $10-million to complete – to determine a model for the potential ground movement in the region. The information sessions were put on in cooperation with the Strathcona Regional District and the City of Campbell River to communicate the interim risk of flooding due to a major event before the completion of BC Hydro’s recently announced seismic improvement plan. Howie Siemens, Protective Services Coordinator for the Strathcona Regional District and Emergency Program Coordinator for the City of Campbell River, followed Wilson’s presentation by providing an overview of emergency

planning within Campbell River and the surrounding area and the response process that would be activated in the event of a major earthquake. “Obviously we all live to live by the water and by the mountains, and some of that brings risk,” he said. Now that there are reports available which assess the possible fallout of of these risks people need to ask themselves if they are aware of and prepared for them. “Most people who are injured during earthquakes are from not getting underneath something solid and holding on,” Siemens said, instead running outside or otherwise making themselves susceptible to other hazards such breaking windows, getting thrown around, or being hit by power lines or chimneys or other material coming off buildings.

He also said that if you are in your car when an earthquake happens, you should pull over to the side of the road when its safe and not simply stop immediately wherever you are to prevent clogging up routes that emergency vehicles and first responders may need to take to get to affected areas to deliver aid. The most emphatic point Siemens made is that people need to prepare for this eventuality. Have multiple evacuation routes, create a “grab and go kit” that contains a radio (battery operated or crank-style), important documents, food, water, etc. Make a communication plan with people outside your region to be in touch with in a disaster so that they can be a virtual check-in point. Be on social media platforms so you can quickly tell people whether you’re okay or not. “It’s the responsibility

of all of us to be ready. These are real events that we need you know that you’re prepared for. In a large event, it will be our communities coming together and helping each other that will dictate the speed of the communities’ recovery,”

Siemens said. “If you’re prepared and can help your neighbour and help your community, it will go a long way to getting back to whatever the new normal will be.” For those who missed the sessions, a video of the first of the three pre-

City council is ordering a former motel building to be demolished. The building along the foreshore at 391 Island Highway, once part of the Eagle’s Nest Motel, is sitting vacant and has fallen into a state of disrepair, said Karl Read, the city’s bylaw officer. “This matter relates to the building at the foreshore level that has been vacant for some time and has sustained substantial fire damage,” Read said. “Prior to the fire damage the building was habitually accessed by unauthorized persons. Efforts by the owner to secure the building were regularly thwarted. The fire exposed further wall openings to the building. Particle board, which was put in place by the owner after the fire in an attempt to secure the exterior, has been ripped off.” Read said the fire has compromised the structural integrity of the building, making it unsafe to anyone who tries to enter the building. The city sent a letter to the owner on Aug. 29 requesting the owner apply for a demolition permit to tear down the building within 30 days. However, Read said that to date, “no

lition.” The empty building, in addition to the fire, has also been hit by vandals who have covered both the inside and outside walls of the building with graffiti. Read said the city will give the owner six week to prepare and apply for a demolition permit which could require several pieces of documentation because of it being so close to the foreshore. Read said the owner will be given another six weeks after that to complete the demolition and remove all demolition materials. The downtown business group behind events such as Starlight Shopping and the Big Truck Parade, will exist for at least five more years. The Heart of the City Business Improvement Area Society, also known as the Downtown BIA, is expected to get a new lease on life after council supported a renewal of the group Tuesday night. The bylaw that established the group expires on Dec. 31, but the society requested that the city renew its contract. John Wheat, chair of the BIA, said the group wants to continue on with its initiatives to make the downtown an inviting, clean place to

visit. “The Heart of the City BIA has continued to help create a growing, inviting, safe place to be when in the downtown core,” Wheat wrote in a letter to council. “Our wish is to continue on.” Achievements of the Heart of the City BIA include: n the beautification of downtown n working on the need for better lighting downtown n events and activities like the Big Truck Parade, Starlight Shopping, the Easter event, and the Pumpkin Walk The BIA has also provided financial support for Canada Day, River City Arts Fest, Angel Tree, and the Tuesday lunch entertainment in Spirit Square.

Director Jim Abram will continue his reign of chair of the Strathcona Regional District board. Abram, the director for Quadra Island and Discovery Islands, was re-elected to the position by acclamation after no other nominations were put forward. Abram was declared chair at the board’s inaugural meeting Dec. 11 at the Strathcona Regional District offices. It was the first time in 27 years that the chair was elected by acclamation – the last time it happened, it was also to elect Abram. Abram was nominated for the position by Director John MacDonald (Sayward). Abram thanked the directors for the vote of confidence. “ T h an k - you ve r y much directors, I appreciate it,” he said. “ T h an k - you ve r y much for having confidence in me to spend another year up here in the chair’s position. I enjoyed it last year. “Hopefully this year we’ll all work together putting this board on the map,” he added. Following the vote for chair, the board had to

When I hold a meeting I am known to be very disciplined in the way I hold meetings and I prefer to keep it that way. I think I can do the job.” Cornfield, who noted that he served nine years on Campbell River city council, spent three years as mayor, sat on the Strathcona Regional District board and its predecessor’s Comox Strathcona Regional District board, said he also had the tools to run a meeting. “I’ve got a lot of experience,” said Cornfield, who acknowledged that he also served as chair of the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital board. “Like my learned colleague John (MacDonald) down the way, I can work with everyone and have over the years.” But after the votes were

tallied, it was MacDonald who was declared the new vice-chair. For MacDonald, who is the mayor of Sayward, it will be his first term as vice-chair and Abram’s second consecutive term as chair of the board. Following those elections, directors were appointed to various external boards and agencies. Are a D Dire c tor Brenda Leigh, who was absent at Thursday’s meeting, was re-elected as the representative to the Vancouver Island Regional Library Board, with Cortes Island Director Noba Anderson to serve as the alternate. Wha l le y was reappointed to the MidIsland Forest Land Advisory Group with new Zeballos director Julie Colborne elected as the alternate, and Director Michele Babchuk was elected to the Strathcona Gardens Commission. Those appointments will expire at the end of 2015.

F

or the second consecutive year, the Elementary school in Ligui (pronounced lee-gwee), Baja, California Sur has been the recipient of gifts of school supplies from Campbell River schools. The 55 students ranging in age from 5 to 11 were curious and excited when four people from Campbell River – former School District 72 educators Janet and Gordon Burkholder and Bob and Pat Hayhurst – walked into the school yard to make arrangements for the presentation of school supplies on Tuesday, Dec. 9, said retired principal Gordon Burkholder. Some of them even recalled when the group dropped of their “rega-

los” gifts last December. “And of course we recognized many of them, especially Emilio Marquez a grade one student whose joyous expression captured our hearts last year,” Burkholder said. “He ran up to us with a warm smile of recognition that will be remembered always.” This year Bob and Patricia Hayhurst assisted in distributing the pencil cases filled with pens, pencils, and other supplies as well as the rulers and notebooks that were donated by Campbell River schools. “It was very impressive to see these young students gratefully accepting the gifts and offering us their thanks in both English and Spanish,” Bob said. “I want to express my

Two local companies finalists for Small Business Awards The Top 10 semi-finalists for the 12th Annual Small Business B C Awards have now been selected, and two Campbell River companies are on the list. These awards acknowledge the contribution that over 400,000 small business owners and entrepreneurs in our province make to their local communities and the global economy. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 30, British Columbians were asked to nominate and vote for their favourite small businesses. This year was the biggest year yet for the competition with over 460 nominations received from upwards of 70 communities across the province. Nominated companies were given two months to gain as many votes as possible through wordof-moth, social media, e-communications and other creative means. Those who activated their communities and received the most votes have been named Top 10 semi-finalists. These small businesses will now move forward

to face a panel of judges, who will review their applications, and based on the award criteria, narrow down the competition to the Top 5 finalists in each category. The Campbell River finalists are: PREMIER’S PEOPLE’S CHOICE Industry Hair and Body Care, Campbell River BEST COMPANY

A l it is Inve st me nt Counsel, Campbell River The top five finalists in these categories will be announced on Jan. 30, and invited to give a Dragons’ Den-style pitch in front of a panel of judges on why they should be named the best in B.C. The winners will be honored and celebrated on Feb. 26 at the Small Business BC Awards Ceremony in Vancouver. The night will include messages from Premier

Christy Clark and the Honourable Minister Naomi Yamamoto, among others. Winners will receive the Premier’s Prize of $1,500 cash, a one-year All-Access Pass to Small Business BC education and resources, and oneon-one business mentorship opportunities with notable advisors from the award sponsors. Christmas Hamper Delivery Day is Saturday From left, Jim Linton of the Knights of Columbus accepts a cheque for $1,000 for the Hamper Fund from Alitis Investment Counsel CEO Cecil Baldry-White and Vice-President Terry Gwilliam. The funds were raised through Casual Fridays by the Campbell River staff and were matched by the management at Alitis. The Knights will be distributing the Christmas hampers this Saturday to seniors, families and individuals in need.

Launching support

Bravehearts Dragon Boat team president Linda Stopa presents Chris Aerts of the Knights of Columbus with a cheque for $500. For the last three years the Bravehearts have supported the Community Christmas Fund by donations, help in making up the hampers and delivering them.

Now more than ever, you need someone who’s been there before.

The Community C h r ist mas Hamp e r Depot is in the same location as the past two years beside Banners in the Tyee Plaza. On delivery day for the Hampers this year they are once again appealing to the residents of Campbell River to help build and then deliver the hampers. While the procedure for the building of the hampers has not changed, there is a change for the many people who bring their

vehicles to aid with the delivery on Saturday. The access route used in the past is not available due to the new construction in the area immediately north of Banners. They have therefore adapted and have set up the procedure that follows (and shown in picture above). Drivers are asked to line up on Roberts Reach on the ocean side of the Island Highway across from Mcdonalds Restaurant.

They have enlisted the services of professional flag people who will direct drivers to the loading area (behind Banners) as space become available. Do not drive directly to the rear of the depot as there is no space for extra vehicles. Help is needed to build the Hampers on Friday afternoon about 2:30 p.m. (to get a head start) and again on Saturday morning from about 8 a.m. until the task is completed.

Fred Eaglesmith adds Campbell River to never-ending tour itinerary Award-winning singersongwriter Fred Eaglesmith fuses rock ‘n’ roll edge and stand-up comic wit into performances he likes to characterize as “Johnny Carson meets the Rolling Stones.” And now, he’s bringing his well-honed show to theatres across North America — the kinds of stages both the Stones and Carson played once upon a time, along with musical luminaries like Tom Waits, who singled out an Eaglesmith song, “Your Sister Cried,” when asked to recall the last time a piece of music had moved him to tears. (“It just tore me up,” Waits said of the song’s lyrics.) Eaglesmith, it should be noted, is equally adept at provoking laughter and tears, which speaks to his skill at conveying the complexities of human experience. Though he’s a rocker as much as a singersongwriter, don’t let his playing chops fool you. He’s about crafting songs — songs that get to the heart of any matter, and can resonate with both fellow songwriters and the barstool-perching legionnaires at the farflung posts he’s also taken to playing. Eaglesmith has always been an independent explorer, seeking new ways to challenge himself and engage fans, musically and otherwise. Trundling his band from stage to stage in a vegetable-oil-powered converted school bus,

Todd Snider, Alan Jackson and Toby Keith (in 2003, several others contributed to The Songs of Fred Eaglesmith: A Tribute). Tambourine and his other recent releases, 6 Volt and Cha Cha Cha, are filled with songs that also stick with listeners long after the last note, sometimes grooving and haunting simultaneously. Inspired by the era when cars had five-button AM radios and stations played Blonde on Blonde tracks next to “96 Tears,” Tambourine’s tremoloed

guitar licks and sha-la-la harmonies evoke rock’s golden age while remaining true to Eaglesmith’s timeless muse — the same muse that drives him to paint, and to use those paintings to fund his albums. Yeah, some people might just try to relax between their 200 gigs a year, or at least let somebody else do the bus driving and repair work. Not Fred Eaglesmith, whose creativity and dedication refuse to go on vacation. But one

thing’s sure; he’ll never die of boredom. And neither will his fans. The Tidemark Theatre and Vancouver Island MusicFest proudly present Fred Eaglesmith at the Tidemark Theatre on Feb. 25. Tickets are $32 plus applicable taxes & fees and can be purchased at the Tidemark Box Office from Tuesday – Saturday between 12 and 4 p.m. Tickets are also available online from www.islandmusicfest.com and www. tidemarktheatre.com.

3x5 bounty Enterprises Fred Eaglesmith can provoke laughter as much as tears with his songwriting and stage performance. He plays the Tidemark Theatre on Feb. 25.

he recently broke new ground with his “Legions of Legions” tour of Canadian legion halls. Expanding into theatres is another new direction for this club and festival favorite. From his mid-show pie auctions to fund Operation Smile surgeries for children to his Annual Fred Eaglesmith Charity Picnic, which has grown into a three-day, family-friendly event benefiting a different cause each year, he’s certainly proven that he knows how to entertain. In fact, an entire theatrical production, “Dear Johnny

Deere,” was crafted from Eaglesmith’s songs; the musical debuted in 2012 to critical acclaim which included a four out of four star review in the Toronto Star which

called the production a “winner.” Eaglesmith’s genrespanning songs have been recorded by artists including Miranda Lambert, Cowboy Junkies,

their pets.

Why pets do not make good gifts We all know the holiday season is a hectic time of year. With numerous visits from family and friends, the house is filled with excitement. For a puppy, kitten or even an adult animal, being placed in this situation can be bewildering and frightening. Likely the animal is already experiencing some stress from being removed from littermates or having come from an animal shelter. What the

animal needs is a quiet, calm environment where patterns can be established to get everyone off to a good start. A gift animal can easily be neglected amidst all the excitement of the holidays. Animals especially puppies and kittens - need special care and attention when moved to a new environment and, unfortunately and unintentionally, during the holiday season

pets can be quickly forgotten among the new toys and games. First-time guardians can also be unprepared for the dramatic changes an animal can make within the household. Impulse-buying at Christmas often overlooks the longterm commitment involved in caring for a pet. The commitment of care must extend throughout the animal's lifetime, which will be years -

even decades for some. Since an addition to the household will effect the entire family, everyone should be consulted. Another point to consider is that most adults prefer to choose their own pet to match their lifestyle and personality. Instead of giving a pet at the holidays... Consider creating your own gift certificate offering to cover the cost of the adoption of a new family pet of their choice from the SPCA. You could wrap the accessories - a collar, leash, toys, or a pet care book - with the certificate. That way, after the holidays when everything has calmed down, the new pet can be selected carefully and given the attention he or she needs and deserves. Or, buy a BC SPCA Pawsitive Gift! Paws & Claws For people who

their pets.

Dangers for your pet at Christmas Now that the festive holiday season is upon us and we are all rushing around with a million things to do, it is important not to forget that Christmas can be a hazardous time for our pets. The top 5 reasons pets visit a Veterinarian on Christmas Day: 1.Gastritis / Enteritis 2.Foreign body ingestion 3.Soft tissue trauma 4.Lacerations or bite wounds 5.Chocolate poisoning It is very tempting to give the dog the remains of the Christmas turkey, just remember bones can and do kill. When bones are cooked they become very brittle and when the dog chews them they splinter into needle sharp pieces. These pieces can become stuck in the stomach or intestines and can perforate the bowel, which is life threatening. Uncooked bones can have the same effect as cooked bones so it is best to avoid bones

all together. If the bowel becomes perforated the insides of the abdomen become infected. A surgical procedure is the only way to remove bones from the intestinal tract. Christmas meals often produce a lot of fatty left over's and the family pet often ends up being given these. Excessively fatty foods can cause pancreatitis which is inflammation of the pancreas. It is very painful and requires intensive care for the animals' intestinal system to get back to normal. Take care with floral arrangements and plants especially if you have a cat; all Lilies are toxic to cats and the pollen can easily get on their coats if they brush past an arrangement, they can then ingest the toxins when they groom themselves. Poinsettias are also a common addition to the home at Christmas; they are also toxic to your pet if ingested. You may be tempted

to fashion your pet with a decorative ribbon "collar" but beware that this could become a choking hazard. Also, it's best to quickly discard ribbons and bows wrapped around holiday gifts so that your curious companions won't be enticed to chew or swallow them. Ingested ribbon can cause a choking hazard and ultimately twist throughout the intestines, leading to emergency surgery and even death. Twinkling, shiny and dangling holiday lights may be another source

of danger to your curious pets. Got a pet that likes to chew? Electrical shock may occur when a pet chomps down on an electrical cord, causing tongue lacerations and possible death. Check your holiday lights for signs of fraying or chewing and use a grounded three-prong extension cord as a safety precaution. If you have candles on display, place them in a hard to reach spot so that your pets can not access them. Not only can pets seriously burn themselves, but knocking over candles creates a fire hazard and

may leave a trail of hot wax that will easily burn the pads of paws and skin. Many households hang chocolate treats on the tree or wrap presents containing chocolate and place them underneath the tree. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs and cats it contains a substance called theobromine. Dark chocolate is the worst as it contains a greater concentration of theobromine. Dogs especially are attracted to the smell of chocolate treats. It is important not to leave any chocolate treats in reach of pets, remember to shut them out of the room where the tree is when you go to bed or go out. Christmas trees are more dangerous to pets than fake plastic ones. Pine needles can puncture internal organs if eaten; they are also toxic to pets. Pine trees

can also be a cause of skin irritation in pets with skin allergies. If you do have a real tree, make sure the drink stand for the tree has plenty of water to prevent the tree drying out & losing needles. It is important that your pet isn't able to get to this water & drink it as it could result in poisoning. Cats love to play with string and tinsel is even more attractive as it sparkles. Tinsel can get stuck in the digestive tract if ingested causing serious problems for your pet and often requiring an operation to remove it. Christmas is a time of year to celebrate and be with family, the last thing anyone would want is to be stuck in a Veterinary Clinic on Christmas day. Taking precautions with pets during these festive times can help ensure that you and your family will enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season!

Q

BONU ON F S RESH POINT TURK S EYS

At this time of year, we contemplate more often those who are important to us – family, friends, co-workers and our communities in general. This year is particularly special as we were welcomed enthusiastically to our new home at QF WestShore in Langford. It’s with a great sense of pride, privilege and satisfaction that we acknowledge the opportunity to once again wish each of you the best this wonderful season has to offer. We continue the time-honoured tradition of remaining closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, giving the people we work with everyday an opportunity to recharge after a very busy year and return to serve you with a warm and welcoming smile.

New residential care beds Seniors and individuals in Campbell River who can no longer live on their own will soon have access to improved residential care services. Earlier this year Island Health issued a Request for Proposals seeking proponents to own and operate 40 new community-based care beds in Campbell River by 2017. Following an extensive evaluation process, Park Place Seniors has been selected as the preferred proponent. Park Place Seniors, which owns and oper-

ates the New Horizons residential care facility in Campbell River, will be building a new residential care wing on its existing facility to house the 40 new publiclyfunded beds, of which 20 will deliver licensed dementia care and 20 will deliver services to residents who have more complex care needs, including moderate and advanced dementia. The operator will also be building five new private pay beds at the same location for a total residential care capacity of

126 publicly-funded and 13 private pay beds. Island Health and Park Place Seniors will work toward finalizing a project development agreement early in 2015. Construction is expected to take 21 months, with the new wing to open in 2017. Construction costs of the new facility will be in the range of $9 million, with annual operation costs for the 40 beds, funded by Island Health, in the range of $2 million. “This is the next step

in our commitment to create an additional 40 community-care beds in Campbell River to open concurrently with the new Campbell River Hospital,” said Island Health Board Chair Don Hubbard. “These new beds will improve residential care access for those who can no longer live at home.” The beds support Island Health’s focus on community-based care which is often the most appropriate care setting for people who can no longer manage at home.

Disaster assistance available for those impacted by last week’s storm systems The provincial government has announced that Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) is now available to eligible British Columbians in 31 communities on Vancouver Island and across the Lower Mainland, who may have been impacted from the major flooding that occurred last week, including Campbell River. DFA is available to home owners, residential tenants, small business owners, farmers, charitable organizations and local government bodies who were unable to obtain insurance to cover these disaster-related losses. Applications for DFA must be sub-

mitted to Emergency Management BC (EMBC) by Mar. 12, 2015. British Columbians can access the DFA application form at embc.gov.bc.ca Claims can be made for total damage in excess of $1,000 to a maximum claim of $300,000. Home owners or residential tenants must show that the property damages id their primary residence, so seasonal or recreation properties, as well as hot tubs, patios, pools, garden tools, landscaping, luxury items (jewelry, fur coats, collectables), and recreational items like bicycles are not eligible for assistance.

Storey Creek applies for extended liquor service hours KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Storey Creek golf club is attempting to extend the hours it can sell alcohol to visitors but the proposal came up against some opposition by city council Tuesday. The Storey Creek Golf and Recreation Society has applied to the province for a change in its liquor licence that would allow the golf club to sell alcohol starting at 9 a.m. Coun. Larry Samson said at Tuesday night’s

council meeting that he believes that’s too early to start serving drinks. “I tend to have a problem with opening up the liquor sales at nine o’clock in the morning from the current 11 (a.m.),” Samson said. “Even though there hasn’t been any complaints, I don’t see the need to open up liquor sales at nine o’clock in the morning.” Samson said he could understand the earlier sales during special events at the golf club, but

added he was concerned about making alcohol available so early in the morning on a daily basis. “I see the odd time if they have tournaments or special occasions,” Samson said, “but I’ve just been reading the reports in the news media on increased problems in our health system with the change in our liquor laws.” BC is in the process of making several changes to its liquor laws, including increasing the variety of alcohol that can

be sold at sporting events and music festivals, allowing alcohol at farmer’s markets and allowing liquor sales at grocery stores. But Coun. Charlie Cornfield said he doesn’t see any harm in what Storey Creek is trying to do. “It’s only a two hour change,” Cornfield said. In the end, council gave its recommendation (with councillors Samson and Ron Kerr opposed) to the province to allow the change

in Storey Creek’s liquor licence which would allow the golf club to sell alcohol from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week. Closing hours would remain unchanged at 1 a.m. Monday to Saturday and midnight on Sundays. In recommending council give its support to the liquor licence amendment, City Planner Chris Osborne said the city has “no record of complaints” at Storey Creek relating to “noise or disturbance and the

location is not noisesensitive.”

THEY SAID IT: “The RCMP has voiced no concerns with the application”

–Chris Osbourne, Campbell River City Planner

Osborne said there is also no known history of

disturbance on site. “The proposed licence amendments are not considered likely to carry adverse impacts for the community,” Osborne said. “The RCMP has voiced no concerns with the application.” There were also no concerns from the neighbourhood that the city was aware of. Osborne said notice of intent letters were mailed on Dec. 2 to surrounding property owners and the city received no responses.

CARTI brings community together to solve problems MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

Only a few short years ago, North Island College (NIC) created an entity called the Centre for Applied Research, Technology and Innovation (CARTI) to help facilitate more integration between the school and the region, and they’ve been busy accomplishing things ever since. “It’s one way for the college to engage in community,” according to Naomi Tabata, Manager of the Centre. “We try to create projects between community and the college to solve problems within the community. We have all these resources, and we have amazing people, so let’s be in the community and see how we can build together.” According to Tabata, one of the impediments to this integration is that there seems to be a misconception about NIC being simply a “trades school,” so people don’t necessarily think of the institution when they’re addressing issues within their organization or tackling problems within the community. “Not only do we have a full range of programming here, but we also have access to all the faculty at all our campuses,” Tabata says, who could add expertise to ideas and problems that others may have. They just need to know what these

problems are so they can figure out how to best address them. “We started with some really great successes around aquaculture,” she says, including the partnering of CARTI and NIC with various aquaculture companies and the National Science and Education Research Council (NSERC) to address some monitoring issues at aquaculture facilities. They used this partnership to develop new monitoring techniques with remote vehicles and video observation at aquaculture deep-sea sites that are unaccessible to divers. “That was a two year project and it was really exciting,” Tabata says. “Lots of great learning came out of that – new information that hasn’t been found before to address an issue that’s found across the country. Our colleagues in Newfoundland are very interested in what we’re learning there, for example.” It’s not only a great way to increase knowledge within a sector, Tabata says, but it’s also an economic driver within the region itself when it’s done properly. “That project was $200,000 in federal dollars that wouldn’t have been here otherwise – and it’s all being spent locally,” she said, adding that they have even larger projects on the go which are bringing the same types of benefit, such as a $1-million

research program examining and addressing some of the aquaculture sector’s waste issues. Another major initiative they’re working on right now is examining ways to get locally-produced food integrated into large, governmentally funded institutions such as hospitals, schools, seniors’ homes and military bases. Tabata says they are also constantly involved in multiple smaller projects, such as their recent partnership with Greenways Land Trust, the City of Campbell River and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, which implemented remote monitoring of wildlife in the Beaver Lodge Trail System. “We want the community to come talk to us,” Tabata says, “let us know what their challenges are, and tell us how we might work together and help them to build something exciting for Campbell River. We love it when industry or business or community comes to us with some challenge they’re having and we try to work out a way to help by bringing people together.” One advantage to working with CARTI to develop these types of community plans or business ideas is the centre’s access to funding pools that most people would not have access to otherwise, according to Tabata.

Another benefit is that an idea doesn’t have to be fully built up and fleshed out for them to start working on it, as it would be if you were approaching a bank for a business loan, for example. “They could come to

me with an idea,” Tabata says. “That’s fine. We’re going to sit and massage that idea and figure out the pieces that we need in order to make that happen. Who are the players that need to be at the table?

“We don’t want to do anything in isolation, so if there are other people in the community who might have an interest in achieving this same outcome, we want to get those people or organizations involved, as well.”

Anyone who may have ideas for community projects that CARTI could help make a reality are encouraged to contact Tabata at naomi tabata@nic.bc.ca or at 1-800-715-0914 extension 7719.

The summer of 2014 will be long remembered as exceptional fishing in Campbell River and even as we get close to winter the Winter Springs are plentiful for those angers getting out. December has been a good month and Springs that are in the area feeding on bait, can get to 26 pounds and that’s a big fish. The average salmon this time of year range from 14 to 16 pounds, a nice tasty fish for the Christmas dinner table. With the recent storms, boats will have to manouver around floating debris but that will get easier as the wind and tides

move the floating lumber to the shore. Fishing for Coho or Springs can be good at the Kitty Coleman Hump, Bates Beach and around Denman Island. In the month of January fishing will be better at Bates Beach. Those getting out are fishing depths 150 to 200 feet

with

using small Tomic plugs and Army Truck Hootchies with a UV Flasher. Point Wilson Darts have been productive for anglers who like to jig for salmon and some nice catches can be had. River levels in the area are high and if the rain stops, water will clear and will be fishable for catch and release trout and Steelhead. In November some anglers from the Campbell River, fished the Thompson River at Spence’s Bridge with no luck, but that changed in the first 2 weeks of December when reports came in of excellent Steelhead fishing on the fly.

On local lakes, the water levels are high and the fish can become a little sluggish but if you put in time and effort some nice trout can be caught from shore using a worm or Power Bait. In many lakes throwing out a small spoon or Panther Martin lure can get you a trout for the pan. With no bug hatch the fish are hungry and will be off the surface so fishing deeper water may be the answer. Next week I have a report from Courtenay as I fish the trout lakes and for those who are interested in fly tying, I will have some tips for the beginner fly tier.

Pre-registration has begun for the traditional Christmas Bird Count in Campbell River, which will officially be on Saturday, Dec. 27. Participation is free or by donation. Expert and novice birders interested in spending a full day on one of our twelve teams are welcomed to preregister by contacting the count organizers. The twelve teams of between two and six counters – each with at least one expert who can identify most bird species in the area – will count birds in their preassigned portion of the count area, most of which include both upland and oceanfront areas. The teams then compare notes at a wrap-up get-together, usually in a local pub or restaurant. No pre-registration is needed for the backyard bird count on the same day, where participants can contribute to the bird count data by checking their bird feeders periodically during the day and recording the species and number of each species at different times. To report your feeder count, call the count organizers on Dec. 28 and provide your results, name, address and contact information. Everyone should be “on-the-alert” during the count week which is from Dec. 24 to 30 for species missed on the count day. All results go to the Audubon database and help shape conservation strategies. For more info on the Christmas Bird Count check birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count If you enjoy bird-watching and would you like to meet fellow bird-lovers, please contact count organizers Luisa Richardson at 250-923-9918 or by email at Lu_rich@shaw.ca or Colin Buss at 250-850-0884 or by email at busster@telus.net

Chase named B.C.’s best

Timberline Wolves volleyball star Sarah Chase has been named The Province newspaper’s 2014 Player of the Year. She was chosen unanimously by a panel of six of B.C.’s university-level women’s volleyball head coaches. The NCAA-bound six-foot outside hitter was described as an “athletic, six-rotation outside hitter with all the tools to be successful at the collegiate level” by the Vancouver daily.

Killer Whales have a cracker of a swim meet Last weekend the Campbell River Killer Whales travelled to Victoria to compete in the annual PCS Christmas Cracker Invitational Swim Meet. The Cracker is a high level competition, and usually one of the fastest meets of the year, that sees over 800 athletes

compete with swimmers travelling to the island from as far as Alberta, Ontario, and Washington. It is also a chance to see some of Canada’s top swimmers compete from the National High Performance Training Centre. The Killer Whales had 36 swimmers attend the

competition, ranging from cracker first timers, to the veteran Killer Whales looking to put up nationally ranked times. The Killer Whales had a very successful meet, with more highlights then can be listed. Our youngest and newest swimmers were achieving best times every time

they dove in the water. Benji Bridle, Maura Dybwad and Summer Wenger had very successful weekends, going into each race with a positive attitude and learned some valuable skills for future competitions. Ian Rolston, fresh off making his Para-

National times last summer, did not miss a step getting 100 per cent best times and confirmed himself as one of the top 17 and under Para swimmers in the country. One of his best races was the 200 Backstroke, where he took over a minute off his best time to go 2:49.34, winning

a heat full of able body swimmers by more than 30 seconds. Mackenzie Padington had one of the best swim meets of her life, breaking a club record every time she dove in the pool. What she accomplished over the weekend was even bigger than club records though. In

the country for 15 year old girls. Jasmine Skuse continued her pursuit of being one of the top young swimmers in the country over the course of the weekend, despite dealing with a stomach bug that actually took her out of competition on the last day of the meet. Having one of the toughest schedules of any of the swimmers at the competition, Skuse managed to post times that place her at the top in the country in a variety of events, from sprint Breaststroke, to the grueling 1500m Freestyle. Jamiliya Wellard attacked the weekend like a true champion, which allowed her to achieve her third Age Group National (AGN) Qualifying Standard, qualifying her for the meet, as well as her first Western National Qualifying Standard in the 100 m

Butterfly. She shocked her teammates and other competitors in the 200 Individual Medley when she took off over 14 seconds over the course of the day, placing second in the finals, and achieving another AGN standard. Maya Ruehlen had a fantastic meet as well, getting her 2nd BC AAA time, qualifying her for Provincials in February, as well as swimming to 100 per cent best times over the 3 day meet. As well as having her fastest meet to date, she also was a great leader on deck, sticking around to cheer on her teammates, and was a great role model to the younger Killer Whales who attended the meet. The Killer Whales are headed into the Christmas break before the big Short Course season championships start at the end of January.

t the rink, Cody Wanner has the best seat in the house. No, he’s not sitting on the bench, in the press box, or even in the front row, but he is always at ice level. In fact, he’s on the ice. Wearing the black and white stripes. Wanner, 25, is a linesman and he’s come a long way since his first assignments at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. The Campbell River native, who now lives on the Lower Mainland, has gone further than he ever imagined hockey would take him. On Sept. 14 of this year, Wanner was hired by the Western Hockey League. He worked his first regular season game on Oct. 5 in front of 4,600 fans – including

his mom, little brother, fiance and other family – at the Pacific Coliseum when the Vancouver Giants hosted the Prince George Cougars. Wanner followed that up with three more Giants games through the month of November and on Dec. 28 he will be lining a Royals game in Victoria. He credits his success to hard work and the support of his hometown. “If it wasn’t for the people back in Campbell River that helped me get to where I am, I wouldn’t be here,” said Wanner, who gives back to his hometown whenever he gets the chance. “Whenever I come home to Campbell River I try to stop by the rink to see if there is a hockey game going on so I can watch the officials. If I can help a younger official even a

little bit, I am happy.” By sharing his wisdom, Wanner is paying it forward just like those before him. When Wanner was 14, Mike Lytwynec, a Campbell River Minor Hockey officiating mentor at the time, got Wanner into a midget Tyee rep game which set in motion his rise through the ranks. “He pulled me aside and gave me some pointers, what to do, and what not to do. I ended up having a great game,” Wanner recalled. “The following season I was up at Strathcona Gardens watching a Campbell River Storm Junior B exhibition game when I was asked if I’d be interested in lining a Junior B game. I nervously said yes and I was assigned the home opener a week later. “I still recall my stepdad driving me to the

rink, being as nervous as ever, and what was a five minute drive seemed like an eternity,” Wanner adds. “That was the beginning of my above minor officiating career, and without these people giving me the opportunities I was given, I don’t think I would be where I am now.” Wanner also credits his mom, Donna Walters – and a desire for cash – for giving him the push he needed. “When I was 12 I wanted to buy things like any kid wanted to, whether it was Lego, hockey cards, model cars,” Wanner said. “But money didn’t grow on trees and my mother made sure I understood that. I was raised to understand that in order to get what you want, you need to work for it.” So Wanner signed up Cont. page 55

for an officials clinic put on by the Campbell River Minor Hockey Association. It paid off – between the ages of 12 to 15, Wanner reffed and lined several minor hockey games through novice to midget, at both the house and rep hockey levels. Two years later, it was time for Wanner to make a difficult decision; while he loved being on the ice, he knew it wasn’t going to pay the bills. “If there was one thing my mom knew, it was that I was going to go to school after I graduated from Timberline Secondary in 2007,” Wanner said. “At this time I had been lining Junior B hockey for three years and I wasn’t going to be able to make a living from this, so I needed to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.” So, after successfully achieving his drafting certificate from North Island College in 2009, Wanner applied and was accepted to BCIT for the Architecture and Building Engineering Technology course. But Wanner wasn’t ready to abandon officiating. While in Burnaby, Wanner was introduced to senior level officiating staff and was put into games in the Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) (Junior B) and the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) (Junior A). By the end of the 2013/2014 season, Wanner had 10 seasons of Junior B and six seasons of Junior A under his belt and he could feel his hopes of moving up to the WHL slipping away. “I had worked over 500 Junior B games in my career and my hopes

of achieving my goals of working in the Western Hockey League seemed to be fading,” Wanner said. But then came a break through. This past spring, Wanner applied to attend the WHL Development camp in Calgary. Wanner was accepted and attended the camp in June. But there was one more hurdle. “Although I had more experience than the average 25-year-old, and the skills to work in the WHL, I was not physically fit enough to work in the WHL,” Wanner said. “I had some work to do. So when I got

home from camp, I went straight to the gym to see my trainer Mark Pearce, a referee in the WHL.” With the help of Pearce, Wanner lost 20 pounds and got himself into shape. Then in early August, Wanner received an email with the good news – he was invited to attend the WHL linesman main camp, and then another, saying that he had received two exhibition games in Vancouver. Now three months into his new job, Wanner said the best part is being able to help aspiring hockey players develop and learn the

game. Being front and centre at a hockey game also doesn’t hurt. “I get the best seat in the house to watch some of the best hockey players in the world play the game that they love,” Wanner said. It’s also been a great bonding experience. “My best friends are guys that I have officiated with all of my life,” Wanner said. “The road trips and situations we get put in on the ice really help us bond and become a team. “Without them, it would be very hard to do my job and I trust them with my life out there.”
