New contract gives city workers six-per cent wage increase BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN
Nanaimo city employees will get a six-per cent pay hike over three years under a new collective agreement. Nanaimo city council and the Canadian Union of Public Employees ratified a new collective agreement Thursday, giving about 600 city employees a two-per cent annual pay increase over three years. The previous contract expired Dec. 31, 2013

and the two parties have been in negotiations since April. CUPE local 401 and the city recently hired a labour relations mediator to ratify the agreement, which will see employees get $570,000 in retroactive pay, as well as a two-per cent rate hike in 2015 and 2016. In the last year of the contract the pay hike will be split into two increases in January and July. There is also a new job evaluation plan and changes to benefits and allowances, including
a $500 increase by the employer for maximum monthly long-term disability pay. Laurence Amy, first vicepresident for CUPE Local 401, calls it a good deal with a “modest increase” and said the union and its members are happy. Terry Hartley, the city’s director of human resources and organization planning, said it is a fair contract in comparison with others on the Island. The agreement was something left from the
previous council, according to Mayor Bill McKay. “We certainly would have preferred for them to have completed it but we ended up with it and we are glad that we were able to come to a good conclusion.” He does not anticipate any budgetary challenges and said there’s a commitment to ensure it does not affect taxation. A contingency fund had been set up to cover retroactive pay. news@nanaimobulletin.com
The scheduled September opening of the new Cedar Elementary School could be affected by a 30-day moratorium on construction work, according to Nanaimo school district staff. The Nanaimo school trustees approved a motion to temporarily halt construction and awarding of contracts for conversion work on the former secondary school at their regular board meeting Wednesday. The vote was preceded by a presentation from school staff on the implications. To date, playfield, steel-stud framing and plumbing work are either complete, or near completion, and the stoppage could result in a construction completion date of Aug. 31, as opposed to July 31, according to John Blain, Nanaimo school district’s deputy superintendent. A mechanical tender will be put on hold and the delay could require construction work to take place in a tighter time frame. There could be financial implications as well, Blain said. “The district also has an energy manager agreement with B.C. Hydro and [it pays for] 50 per cent of the salaries within our district,” said Blain. “Part of the agreement ... is the strategic energy management plan and as long as we follow that plan, we receive in lieu of that monies for the salaries, so there’s money involved in it.” See ‘CONSTRUCTION’ /4

Mounties find stolen suitcase Nanaimo Mounties are continuing their investigation into a suitcase, stolen from a woman’s car on Selby Street, that contained personal effects and photographs of her recently deceased sister. Investigators, acting on a tip, recovered the suitcase from the waterfront near the wharfinger’s office Wednesday, but most of its contents had been removed. All that remained was some clothing and funeral service memorial cards. Michelle Pearson, the victim of the theft, informed police Thursday morning when she found her sister’s cellphone on her apartment building’s front steps. Police hope a blue sapphire necklace, death and cremation certificates, and printed photos will also be returned. “Someone knows where these items are,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. Please call the RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www. nanaimocrimestoppers. com.

Crisis line offers help for struggling people While some give generously during the holiday season, Heather Owen worries about what will transpire in the new year. According to numbers supplied by Owen, Vancouver Island Crisis Line community relations coordinator, the volume of calls to the organization increased to 2,561 from 2,294 between December 2013 and this past January. Interventions increased to 247 from 238 during the same time. Owen said there aren’t many calls right at Christmas time, and estimates it is because of the holiday cheer and all the charitable organizations and their related campaigns. After the Christmas lights are taken down, however, depression and other issues can increase, she said.

The Vancouver Island Crisis Line offers people the opportunity to vent and reach out and talk to somebody. The line is available 24 hours a day and additionally, there is an online database, which lists all the services available on Vancouver Island. “It tends to be a worse time after New Year’s, like into January,” said Owen. “It’s a particularly difficult time because if you’re someone that’s dealing with depression or struggling through something or financial strain or anything like that, it doesn’t go away.” The feeling of isolation and loneliness can be amongst the hardest things to deal with and connecting with someone a depressed person feels close to, whether it be a neighbour, worker our counsellor or the crisis line, can be beneficial.

Part of the Cedar project is tied to that energy plan and as that is delayed, it could mean the school district doesn’t meet performance in the plan, Blain said. The school district is the general contractor for the project and labour is provided under a collective agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, said Blain. The delay could have led to displacement of workers, so trustee Scott Kimler amended the motion to allow for necessary CUPE work to be done. The project is estimated to cost approximately $2.36 million, with about $361,000 for the playing field coming from the school district local capital fund and $1 million each from the 2014-15 and 2015-16 annual facilities grants. As of Dec. 10, all of the local capital fund money and about 55 per cent of the annual facilities grant money for 2014-15 has been spent. Trustees Jamie Brennan and Bill Robinson voted against the motion.

City demands consultation on Gabriola bridge study Nanaimo city officials are calling for consultation by the province on any fixed link proposals near Cable Bay. Nanaimo city council was nearunanimous on a decision this week to advise B.C. Ferries and the province it wants consultation on any fixed link proposals near Cable Bay Trail, south of the city. A letter will also say the municipality expects no encroachment “on, near or over” the parkland. The move follows an announcement by the B.C. government in September that it will commission a study into the viability of a bridge from Gabriola Island to Nanaimo, including possible locations. “The point of this is putting the province on notice that we want to be consulted, we’re aware of those possibilities ... I think it’s important that we get in front of this rather than behind it as we’ve seen ourselves do in the past,” said Coun. Diane Brennan, who points out they weren’t consulted prior to an announcement there would be a study. Coun. Bill Bestwick opposed the motion and its expectation Cable Bay parkland be excluded from any fixed link proposal, pointing out that the city needs to be able to discuss best options. A report from the province is expected this summer. What do you think?

Regional district repairs sewage pipe after storm
I
rEpairS moNitorEd for stability during future heavy rainfall. By Karl yu The News bulleTiN
The Regional District of Nanaimo has completed repair work on a sewage pipe damaged during a Dec. 10 rain storm. Two leaks were discovered on effluent line located at Morningside Park and while the first leak was repaired with a neoprene-coated clamp on Dec. 11, a second was not repaired until Dec. 16 due to slope stability and safety concerns. The second leak’s location on a bend in the pipe meant that a clamp couldn’t be added. It was also within feet of a nearby house, according to Sean De Pol, regional district manager of wastewater services. The excavation involved was in excess of six metres, leading to geotechnical concerns. De Pol said a geo-technician was brought on site and he asked that excavation stop for safety concerns and to avoid further damage to the property. A plan was created to address concerns and it was determined
the only option was to use fastsetting concrete around the bottom of the pipe. Once work was completed, the flow was turned back on at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 16, said De Pol. “We’ve patched those two leaks, we’ve tested it with fluorescein dye. We don’t see any other leaks in the area, however with other future, heavy rainfall events, that put stress on the system, there will be concern for that,” he said. De Pol said the heavy rains led to increased water flow which, coupled with high tides, put pressure in the pipe. He estimates 30 or 40 pounds of pressure per square inch on the pipe, which rarely happens. As a precaution, signs were put up at Morningside Park recommending against swimming, wading or harvesting shellfish until the pipe was repaired. Being that it’s winter, restoration of the park and the adjacent property will take some months and will include vegetating and seed planting. De Pol said the cost of repairs isn’t currently known but the regional district will be seeking disaster financial assistance from the provincial government.

Downtown street stalls are now free on Saturdays thanks to a change that a Nanaimo merchant organization calls one of the most “positively impactful adjustments” to parking policy in years. For the next year, people will no longer have to pay on Saturdays to use metered street stalls downtown, adding to parking already free for drivers on Sunday, evenings and statutory holidays. The new oneyear pilot program, approved by Nanaimo city council last week, was driven by the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association, which aims to boost parking demand and the number of people who visit the
south-end shopping district. In a letter to the city, John Cooper, association president, said many downtown business owners are still struggling to attract customers while commercial vacancy rates have never been higher. With parking infrastructure use also low, and no demand for parking on evenings and weekends, the organization believes it’s “critically important” to offer free parking during off-peak hours. The new change is for on-street metered spots in the Old City Quarter and downtown and carries a two-hour limit. It does not apply to the Harbourfront and Port of Nanaimo

parkades and will be monitored by the city to see if traffic increases on weekends. It also follows a year-long trial to offer free weekend parking at the Bastion Street parkade and a city parking strategy that’s set to eliminate free twohour parking downtown and increase meter rates for the first time in a decade. “It’s a good first step,” said Cooper,
who said it’s among a number of things on which the organization has been working with the city and its parking administration and provides a valuable promotional opportunity for downtown businesses. “We are hoping it’s going to have a big improvement on downtown economic activity.” Coun. Ian Thorpe supported the trial run. “That’s an excellent first step and we can see where it goes to and in the meantime, hopefully be having ongoing discussions about the city’s philosophy about parking and metering and other issues,” he said. Coun. Jim Kipp also supported the promotion of free parking, but said the city has to look at dismantling parking meters downtown. Even without the Saturday revenue, the City of Nanaimo still expects to make between $8,000 and $12,000 more than previous years because of increased parking fees under its new strategy. Progress of the pilot will be tracked by the business improvement association and City of Nanaimo over the next year. A report will go to council at the end of the trial period next December. news@nanaimobulletin.com

fundraising drive goes down to the bone

VIU’S DEEP bay Marine Field Station will hang whale skeleton in facility.
By Marilyn assaf ancouver Island University’s innovative buy-a-bone-to-raise-awhale campaign is sold out, but public support is still needed to create a permanent educational exhibit at the Deep Bay Marine Field Station north of Parksville. “We’re ecstatic and truly overwhelmed at the public enthusiasm towards this project,” said Brian Kingzett, field station manager. “All 156 whale bones have been sponsored and we’ve raised $67,000 thanks to the generous support of individuals and businesses in our community. “Our staff and volunteers are hard at work preparing the final exhibit, but we need to raise another $8,000 to complete it by March. The exhibit will feature a 35-foot grey whale skeleton hanging over the stairwell of the field station. It will be the highlight of our marine science public education program.” Certificates of ‘bone ownership’ signed by VIU President and Vice-Chancellor Ralph Nilson are being mailed to all donors who purchased bones and supported the online campaign. Nanaimo dentist Rob Wolanski, a member of the VIU Foundation Board, purchased two lumbar vertebrae and one thoracic vertebrae to show his support for the project. “I wanted the whale’s jaw bone but it was already sold,” says Wolanski, who works at Vancouver Island Implant Centre in Nanaimo. “When I heard

Chuck Chestnut, a retired faculty member in Vancouver Island University’s Resource Management Officer Training program, drills a hole into a whale bone to make way for a steel rod that will hold the 35-foot skeleton together when it hangs from the ceiling inside VIU’s Deep bay Marine Field Station. there were three bones left, I thought why not? I bought them all because I know how hard it is to sell the last few items in any fundraising campaign. I also know how many people have volunteered their time in order to leave a legacy for future generations. This truly is a fantastic project.” Launched by the VIU Foundation and Deep Bay Marine Field Station last spring, the raise-a-whale cam-
paign received a major boost when the Underwater Harvesters Association became a lead donor by making a $10,000 gift to the project. That donation, plus the purchase of all 23 bones in the whale’s tail by Jamie’s Whaling Station of Tofino, pushed the campaign past the half way mark. A host of other donors stepped up, from VIU employees, to retired marine scientists, to community mem-
bers, who supported the cause by sponsoring bones. Kingzett came up the idea of creating a permanent whale skeleton exhibit at the field station after the remains of a 20-plus-tonne grey whale washed up on the beach in Sooke, at the south end of Vancouver Island in April 2010. Together with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, VIU worked in partnership with the Scia’new First Nation to bury the whale on their land in the hopes that it could be used in the future for an educational purpose. After a four-year decomposition process, the whale skeleton was exhumed last June. The bones were transported to labs at the field station where they were cleaned and dried over the summer. Visitors to the field station have been able to watch a consultant and a team of volunteers prepare the bones for the final exhibit. “It’s combination of science, engineering and art,” said Kingzett. “Intensive cleaning processes are required and oils must be removed from the bones before they are assembled into a natural looking display. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been drilling holes into the bones because a steel rod will hold the skeleton together when it hangs from the ceiling inside the station. “The exhibit will complement what we do, especially in terms of educating the public about sustainability in coastal communities,” Kingzett added. Volunteer organization relies on Christmas ‘angels’ to provide services to community By Chris Bush The NewS BulleTiN
Rita Innamorati, who works with the Christmas Angel program at Volunteer Nanaimo, has been crying tears of joy in the days leading up to Christmas. “We’ve been so busy with our Angel program it’s just been nuts,” Innamorati said. The Christmas Angel program is just one of numerous donation and volunteer programs Volunteer Nanaimo operates, seasonally and throughout the year. ‘Angels’ are individuals or companies that are paired with local families facing economic hardship and are struggling through the Christmas season. “We give [angels] a list of stuff and then
they pick from the list and go and buy a gift for each of the children and they can do the parents if they want, maybe do a little bit of a food hamper,” Innamorati said. More than 300 families were paired with angels this year. Recipient families are vetted by Volunteer Nanaimo, with help from social agencies the families are working with, to verify need. Some of the stories behind the requests can tug at heart strings, such as a small boy who said he didn’t have a wish list this Christmas because he knew his mother had no money to buy presents. The program started in November and ran until Dec. 17. Requests came in from social agencies right up until the program’s final hour and included two last-
minute families, one with four children and another with five children, that had little chance of being paired with angels. “It’s been amazing,” Innamorati said. “I was just sitting here, not knowing what to do and at 4:31 [p.m.] the phone rang.” Innamorati picked up the phone, even though it came in after closing time, in hopes it was an angel. “And it was,” she said. “I just burst into tears.” Spur of the moment support also came from local merchants who give unexpected breaks at the cash register, such as sporting goods store that heavily discounted a skateboard, making the total sale equal to the value of a gift card Innamorati presented, allowing her to include a bonus matching hoodie in
a present for an 11-year-old boy. It was one of several examples of charitable acts she encountered dealing with local retailers and grocers. Innamorati said one reason for such positive response is that local programs such as Christmas Angels allow people to be directly involved in deciding where and how their donations are used and feel a closer connection to the results of their giving. The Christmas Angels program is over for this year, but Volunteer Nanaimo offers numerous programs and connections for people looking for ways to help out in the community. Parking plan perplexing We want more people to spend time in Nanaimo’s downtown, to live there, to shop there, to play there and simply to be there. Parking improvements help, but we might not be going about them the right way. The City of Nanaimo and the Downtown Nanaimo Business Improvement Association believe downtown parking plays a part in any revitalization of the area. They’re right, but the municipality’s response has been to take a patchwork approach to the perceived problem, one that might not be in the taxpayers’ best interests. The city has talked about developing a parking strategy, but at the same time, its actions have seemed reactionary – new meters, a free parkade experiment and now free Saturday parking. All these tweaks have been announced or implemented while staff has also been considering long-term parking improvements that include advances in technology. Now we find ourselves in a situation where the municipality is installing new meters around the downtown and yet at least one councillor is talking about completely doing away with metered parking. Because downtown parking is so widely available, even during the busy holiday season, we don’t believe the issue needed immediate attention. We could have waited for new meters long enough to decide what kind we wanted. Parking rates did rise recently, and we’re clinking a few more loonies and toonies into the meters when we go downtown these days. Those coins don’t go into the city’s general revenue, but are used for future parking infrastructure and upgrades. That would be all well and good, but considering the city’s parking puzzlement, we’re not sure that those loonies and toonies are money well spent.

That’s why I embarked on the Blue Dot Tour. We need people from across the country and all walks of life to advocate in their communities for recognition of the right to clean air, water and food by all levels of government – and, ultimately, in the Constitution’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. More than half the world’s nations, about 110, have constitutional rights to a healthy environment. It’s time for Canada to join them. Research shows the benefits go beyond protecting the environment and human health to strengthening the economy by stimulating innovation, diversification and competitiveness, and reducing health-care costs. It’s not about slowing progress or stopping development; it’s about ensuring those occur in the best ways possible, reducing environmental degradation and ensuring that the long-term needs of citizens are prioritized over short-term corporate profits and political ambitions. The Blue Dot Tour may be over, but the movement is just getting started. Together, we’re beginning a national conversation about the future of Canada and the importance of caring for each other and the things that keep us alive and healthy: clean air, fresh water, nutritious food and diverse ecosystems.

Crime in city more rampant than we think To the Editor,
On Dec. 1, I was getting cash from an ATM. Being of belowaverage size and disabled, and not as diligent as I should have been, I had not noticed a taller man behind me who probably saw me type in my PIN. After putting my wallet in my backpack, I strapped it to the box on the back
of my recumbent tricycle. I then rolled on slowly near Port Place, where I felt a tug on my trike. A man pulled on my pack, then ran. I turned around to see the wallet pocket opened and emptied. I took off after him, yelling, “Thief!” In the time it took to get through the bank lineup, $200 had been taken from
an ATM. I have since been compensated for that withdrawal, but I am out the $60 from my wallet. I have been reminded of the importance of security when operating instant money machines in a rather brutal way. Sadly, security does not seem to be a big enough concern to some banks. In
contrast, ATMs at banks along that street have shielding between machines or around the keypads. In a separate story, but continuing the events, I rode to the RCMP station to make a report, then home to lock up my tricycle in my parking stall at my townhouse. The next time I went to take
Arts aren’t a priority To the Editor,
Re: City must have arts and culture, Letters, Dec. 18. The letter writer’s heartfelt support of the arts overlooks one very important fact. There are numerous arts facilities in Nanaimo already. Nanaimo culture is well served with performance spaces, art gallery, museums and sports facilities, etc. The letter writer is free to donate to the theatre of his choice if he feels it is being short-changed. But I doubt if he has ever been homeless. With Nanaimo’s current facilities for the arts, and lack of facilities for the homeless, perhaps our politicians, and the letter writer, need to adjust their priorities.

Theatre expansion sound investment Re: City should look after its poor and hungry before funding arts, Letters, Dec. 16. The idea of an addition to the Port Theatre, as I understand it, is to create a venue more accessible to the local artist, as well as the public. This is a good investment for the community because an early and continuous exposure to non-material culture is the best prevention against build up of aggression, intolerance and alienation, all reasons for many costly social problems.

TOM FLETCHER/BLaCk PREss
Energy Minister Bill Bennett, B.C. Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald and Premier Christy Clark announce decision to proceed with the Site C dam at the B.C. legislature Tuesday.
Site C provides needed power To the Editor,
It’s unfortunate that we didn’t build the Site C dam back in the 1980s. It’s true that we didn’t need the power from Site C back then, but in retrospect it would have been a lot less expensive to build and we could have been selling the power for the past couple of decades and using the revenue to pay for the dam. Dams in this province have always been built before we actually needed the power. We routinely sold that extra power – clean power – to various states and provinces that needed it. Plus, when we finally needed the extra power, it was there for us, ready and waiting. But instead of staying a
step ahead of population growth, we’ve been buying power from outside the province to top up the supply of power our current dams are no longer able to supply. That seems contrary to the province’s time-honoured tradition of anticipating future energy needs. We will never recoup missed energy revenue opportunities of the past, but we can learn from the experience and get ahead of the game again. The need for power certainly isn’t going to get any less in the future. So let’s not miss out on the energy opportunities still to come. By the time the Site C dam is built we will need every ounce of energy it can produce.
Re: B.C. government isn’t in the giving spirit, Letters, Dec. 16. The letter writer says, “B.C. has the highest child poverty rate in Canada.” A pure lie of propaganda. In 2007, B.C. and Manitoba had the highest child poverty rate at 18.8 per cent. Manitoba had the highest child poverty rate in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012. B.C. had an NDP provincial government from 1992 to 2000 and the child poverty rate was never below 20 per cent.

Museum meanders down memory lane

Exhibit explores Christmas in Nanaimo during the 1950s By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
Photo contributed
This photo shows the intersection of Commercial Street and the old Island Highway in 1956. The Ashlar Lodge Masonic Temple building can be seen on the far left, while the buildings on the right are where the Port of Nanaimo Centre is currently located. The photo is just one of a dozen historical photos on display at the Nanaimo Museum’s latest exhibit, 1950s Christmas.
Residents of the Harbour City have the opportunity to experience what Christmas was like back in the 1950s. Currently on display at the Nanaimo Museum is 1950s Christmas, an exhibit that looks at pop culture and Christmas traditions of that era. “We try to do a really fun exhibit in December,” said Aimee Greenaway, museum interpretation curator. “The exhibit is nostalgic. It’s a combination of 1950s pop culture and memorabilia.” 1950s Christmas features a wide variety of popular items such as clothing, toys, Christmas decorations and photos of what Nanaimo looked like. There is also a Maggie Muggins doll and book, which is one of Greenaway’s favourite pieces in the exhibit. “I am not really a doll person ... but I thought that was pretty cool. The person who owns her [Maggie Muggins]
also owns the book and has had it since childhood.” The majority of the pieces in the exhibit were loaned by members of the public. Greenaway explained that the museum doesn’t keep general artifacts unless there is a specific Nanaimo connection, and that the museum depends on donations from the public. “It is amazing for us to go to the community and bring in artifacts because a lot of the artifacts fit in really well with this exhibit, but they don’t fit in with the museum’s mandate,” Greenaway said. “They’re a great piece of memorabilia, but they don’t have a Nanaimo history associated with them, so it is not something we would have in our collection.” Items that the museum receives from the public are returned to their owners after the exhibit is over. Greenaway said the 1950s Christmas exhibit wouldn’t even be possible without the community.
it’s great that the public allows us to borrow artifacts so that we can make these exhibits.
“It’s great that the public allows us to borrow artifacts so that we can make these exhibits,” Greenaway said “It’s a community exhibit. We’ve seen lots of family members who have loaned us their pieces, come by the museum and check out the exhibit.” 1950s Christmas runs until Jan. 5 at the Nanaimo Museum, 100 Museum Way. Admission to the exhibit is by donation. For more information, please call 250753-1821 or visit www.nanaimomusuem.com. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

PRIZES INCLUDE cash, gift certificates and the opportunity to perform. By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
Country musicians looking for an opportunity to showcase their talent will have the chance next year. Beginning in January, the Queen’s will be holding My Country Idol, a contest that will see local country artists go head to head throughout the month. “I thought it would be cool to beef up a country night by doing a country idol and give people the opportunity for exposure,” said Tina Coldwell, contest organizer. My Country Idol, open to anyone 16 years old and up, runs Jan. 6-20 with a grand finale show on Jan. 30. The top three winners of the contest will receive handsome prizes. The first place winner gets $500 in cash, along with singing lessons from Arbutus Music and a $200 gift certificate to NYLA or Catwalk. The three finalists will get to play in the finale. “The most important thing is they have a chance to play with a

live band,” said Coldwell. Recently, the Queen’s has decided to cater to the country market in Nanaimo by booking artists such as Aaron Pritchett. Coldwell said it is surprising that Nanaimo doesn’t have a bar that caters specifically to country music fans. “It does surprise me, big time,” she said. The deadline to enter My Country Idol is Tuesday (Dec. 23). The entry fee is $20 or $15 for students Those interested in participating can pick up an application form from Arbutus Music, 6324 Metral Dr., or at the Queen’s. For more information on the contest please call Tina Coldwell at 250-751-4321 or visit http:// www.tlcentertainment.net. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Clippers right in the mix at mid-season I JR. A HOCKEY team has lead atop division. BY GREG SAKAKI The News BulleTiN
The Nanaimo Clippers put themselves in strong contention this fall, and have a lot to look forward to the rest of the way. The city’s junior A hockey club went into its last two games of 2014 with a 23-10-0-1 record and a comfortable lead atop the B.C. Hockey League’s Island Division. “We wanted to get off to a blazing start and kind of create some confidence within our group and then raise our expectations as we go, and I think that’s exactly what’s happened,” said Mike Vandekamp, the team’s coach. Coaches hope that players have high expectations every season, he said, but it’s harder to create that belief without the results on the ice. “We’ve had success, and I think that’s created a sense of belief in the group that we can take this thing a long way this year,” Vandekamp said. The 2014-15 season started with back-toback barnburner losses, but the Clippers took those as lessons and got better. “After that, we started to make some strides,” the coach said. The Shipmen managed to keep up their high-scoring ways while steadily lowering their

goals-against average. “That’s something that we’ve really focused on, because I think it’s extremely important at playoffs and the latter stages of the season that we are a strong, structured team,” the coach said. Just like every other BCHL squad, the Clippers have had injuries, but they’ve had the depth to deal with adversity and haven’t made excuses, or needed to. “It’s forced other players to step up and play a greater role and that’s been really good for their development,” said Vandekamp. “Long-

term, I think it will create a sense of confidence in all of our players that they can all contribute.” That said, the holiday break comes at a good time – Nanaimo’s next game isn’t until Jan. 2, giving most of the guys enough time to get back healthy. Another stor yline heading into the new year is the Jan. 10 trade deadline. Vandekamp, also the club’s general manager, said the team tries to go for it every year, but said there’s perhaps an “exclamation point” this season considering the Clippers’ place in the standings.

Van Osch will defend B.C. crown Nanaimo curling skip Kesa Van Osch, last year’s provincial women’s champion, will have the chance to try to defend her title. Kesa, now with an all-new team that includes her sister Kalia Van Osch as well as Trysta Vandale and Kelsey Steiger, won Curl B.C.’s A event at playdowns at the Golden Ears Winter Club in Maple Ridge earlier this month. The victory earned the Van Osch rink a spot in the B.C. Scotties Women’s Curling Championship at Golden Ears Jan. 21-25. Marika Van Osch will also be trying for another B.C. title. Three-quarters of her reigning B.C. junior championship team is back in 2014-15, including skip Sarah Daniels and lead Megan Daniels, and a new teammate, second Dezaray Hawes. The 2015 B.C. Junior Curling Championships are getting set to rock at the Parksville Curling Club Dec. 28-Jan. 3. The event is free to attend and the final will be televised on Sportsnet Jan. 3. Junior T-men trade for Leies The Nanaimo Timbermen junior A lacrosse team have traded for a familiar name. Connor Leies was acquired last week from the Delta Islanders in exchange for Mitch McDole. Leies scored 23 goals and added 33 assists in 14 games last season at the intermediate level. He is the son of Tyson Leies, a member of the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and former coach of the junior A Timbermen.

Early deadlines due to the Christmas rush mean that weekend sports scores were not available at press time. The Nanaimo Clippers ended off their 2014 schedule with a homeand-home series against the Cowichan Valley Capitals. The Shipmen resume the B.C. Hockey League schedule Jan. 2 and won’t play their next home game until Jan. 10. The Nanaimo Buccaneers were busy the past few days, hosting the Oceanside Generals on Thursday, visiting the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Friday and then playing another home game Sunday against the Victoria Cougars. The Bucs get back at it Dec. 30 with a 7:15 p.m. home game against the Peninsula Panthers.

SENIOR AA basketball team finding out how to work as team.
Editor’s note: Coaches of John Barsby Secondary School’s senior girls’ basketball team weren’t reached until after deadline for the Bulletin’s high school basketball season preview last issue.

Barsby Bulldogs player Cole Virtanen is lifted by teammates in celebration after the football team’s provincial championship victory earlier this month.
Football players extend season Four local players get to keep the pads on for another week. Football B.C. announced its coaches and player rosters for the Tanoa Bowl Classic in Auburn, Wash. on Sunday (Dec. 28) Football B.C. is sending a U18 team and a Grade 8 team to play against American opponents during the thick of U.S. college bowl season.
Making B.C.’s U18 team are Cole Virtanen and Matt Hill of the Barsby Bulldogs and Malik Besseghieur of the Nanaimo District Islanders. Steen Rasmussen of Barsby made the Grade 8 team. The U18 team takes on Washington Vasa on Sunday at Auburn Memorial Stadium after the Grade 8 team plays the Northwest Cougars.
Barsby’s senior AA girls’ basketball team began as two separate groups, but they’ve shown a desire to become one team. “It was a little bit difficult, because we have about four girls from Cedar … and they weren’t used to the other girls because they’re used to playing against each other,” said Carlie Malinski, one of Barsby’s coaches. But they’re bonding and they’re working to build team chemistry. “They’re awesome,” Malinski said. “We have practices at 6 a.m. and every one of them is there on time and ready to go.” Hannah Stannard is the team’s top scorer, playing mostly shooting guard. Point guard Ryanne McLeod and post Kaela Amos are other key players. The coach said it’s a versatile lineup, with different girls able to handle the ball, drive to the basket or
shoot. “I try and push teamwork because I don’t really believe one person can do everything,” Malinski said. “There will be plays for each one of them, because each one of them has a great ability.” The Blazers are 1-2 in league play following a road loss to the Kwalikum Kondors on Tuesday. Stannard was Barsby’s top scorer. In other senior AA girls’ action Tuesday, the Wellington Wildcats girls defeated Highland 89-15 up Island. Olivia Mjaaland scored 19 points, Maddi Atherton had 18 and Mccalli Franklin scored 16. The game of the night Tuesday was an all-Nanaimo senior AA boys’ matchup that saw the Woodlands Eagles knock off the Barsby Blazers by a 65-52 score. For Woodlands, Zack Mackay had 28 points and 13 rebounds and Griffin Douglas scored 16 points. Both Dover Bay Dolphins teams were at home that night, with the senior AAAA boys beating the Ballenas Whalers 63-51 and the Dolphins senior girls edging the Cowichan Thunderbirds 32-31. Danielle Frinton and Rose Plensky were Dover’s high scorers in the game. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Molly, Beamer, Sampson & Casey
Christmas came early for our sweet Molly! She went for her weigh in this morning and has officially lost 4.7kgs and on December 10th she went to her new foster home. Congratulations Molly! We have such a great update for Beamer! After posting her photo on our page we received a private message from Kiara, who manages the Vancouver Island Lost Pets Database Facebook page.
