Spirit of giving in Nicaragua Rotary builds school facilities in Nicaragua By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

C

utting a cheque for a charity is a noble deed, and appreciated by those in receipt. But building a new school with your own hands, for a poor village, can be a lifechanging experience.

That’s what members of the Meadow Ridge Rotary Club – no strangers to donations and community service – found as they took the latter approach in the Nicaraguan village of Jiquillio last year. They can’t wait to get back there in early 2015. Last year, they built two kitchens for two schools in the village of 1,500. The idea is not just to feed hungry kids a big soup lunch every day, but also to get them to attend school, so they can lift themselves out of poverty. “Most of the kids come to school – if they come to school at all – without any food,” said Ineke Boekhorst, Rotarian and executive director of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association. “So food is an enticement.” Simple things, like a measuring tape or a level, were nowhere to be found. They had to guess and improvise. “But at the end of it, we had two kitchens completely built.”

“They don’t have very much, but they’re so proud of what they’ve got.” Ineke Boekhorst, DMBIA

The local people were willing helpers, and the Rotarians were surprised to find that even the kids wanted to get involved. These aren’t kids who walk around with headphones on, texting their friends, or playing Clash of the Clans on a device. These kids are more likely to cut down a coconut, and sit and drink from it with a Rotarian.

Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS

(Clockwise) The group of Rotarians from Maple Ridge enjoyed the spirit of the children from the fishing village; Peter Boekhorst pours cement for the foundation of a school kitchen in Nicaragua; the group heads to work in the morning in the back of a flat deck truck.

“The kids are so adorable,” said Cindy Boileau, who was also part of the local delegation. “The kids come running to help – wondering what they can do.” Her business, Boileau Christmas tree farms, donated 100 trees, which sold for approximately $30 apiece, to help fund the Rotary initiative. Another humanitarian group built a vocational school using improvised building materials – two litre pop bottles filled with sand. It might make Maple Ridge building inspector Stephen Cote-Rolvink cringe, but Boekhorst said the stacked bottles can be used to create

a surprisingly sound structure. The sand-bottles are piled up to create exterior walls, and then cement is applied to the outside. As it dries, it shrinks into the contours in the star-shaped bottom of the bottles. “It works fantastic,” said Boekhorst. “You have this whole wall of stars, and it’s very, very strong – and it’s what they have.” Using this building material, a vocational school with four classrooms has been constructed. Now interior walls need to be built, shelves put up, and the North Americans will take a trip into a larger city to buy equipment for the school.

There are six Rotary clubs partnered in the project. If their funds are matched by Rotary International, they should have $60,000 to put into the vocational school this year. Eventually it will offer computer training and sewing. As well, a community garden will teach agricultural skills. “It will teach them skills that they can use, and earn some money with,” said Boekhorst. She knows the people of Jiquillio will put it to good use. “They don’t have very much, but they’re so proud of what they’ve got.” A small example of that was some colorful elastic bracelets brought by

Jana Fuller and her daughter Kira, which soon became the local fashion. “Everyone was walking around with these bracelets – boys girls, older people – they all thought it was the greatest thing they had ever seen.” The Rotarians got a taste of life in the fishing village. The men go out on the ocean at night in small vessels crowded by a crew of four. The women and children help them launch their small boats. “In the morning, they come back and the fish they have will feed their families, and the rest they sell in the street.” “It’s a completely different life than we’re used to,” said Boekhorst. Helping in the way that the Rotary club is, they can see how they are making a difference. “If you go, hands on, and see what happens with your money, and the kids sit with you and want you to read to them like your own kids … it tugs at your heart strings,” said Boekhorst. “It sits with you for the rest of your life. I want to go back and help, and to make sure they’re alright,” she added. “We had a great time – it was as much fun as it was work,” said Boileau. “It was an amazing experience that I’m very grateful for.” The Rotary Club plans to return members to Nicaragua in March.

Garibaldi graduate a positive inspiration to all Kieran McGhie gave strength to kids fighting the disease By Neil Corbett ncorbett@mapleridgenews.com

A Maple Ridge teenager who was an inspiration to everyone who knew her, in the face of a two-year battle with cancer, has lost her life. Kieran McGhie, 18, passed away on Sunday morning at 4 a.m. A fall while figure skating ultimately revealed her bone cancer, osteosarcoma, a week before Christmas in 2012. The cancer also attacked her lungs. After a hip replacement, surgery on her femur, the removal of one lung and chemotherapy, she was diagnosed as cancer free in the summer of 2013. McGhie maintained an online blog through her ordeal, and filled it with positive messages. She wanted to be a role model for other kids fighting cancer. “I care so much about my body and living a healthy lifestyle and how to deal with things. But the biggest thing I’ve learned is to never

the

ever give up and to always stay positive! No matter how scared, worried or sad you are, just smile! I’ve learned to always tell myself that I’m going to be okay and to always look at the bright side of everything.” When cancer returned, she faced a tougher battle, McGhie using new research drugs. Her principal at Garibaldi secondary, Grant Frend, remembers his conversations with Kieran, and how much she looked forward to graduation last year. Three weeks before grad she had surgery to remove a tumor, but she was determined to be part of the ceremony. “The highlight of my career was handing her a diploma on that stage,” said Frend, remembering the standing ovation McGhie got from the audience. He called her “a bright light.” “Everyone loved her. She was such a great kid. She’s one of those people it’s impossible not to like.” Kellie Marquet said McGhie was like part of the family, because her daughter Heather and she were close friends.

“Even before cancer she was always the happiest kid – she would come into a room and hug everyone,” she said. “She was the glue that held everybody together.” Family friend Deanna Bessette said McGhie passed away at Canuck Place, surrounded by her family, Her mother is Cindy Hold, father Brad McGhie, and siblings Kalia, Dakota, Camille and Deacon. “We knew it was going to happen, but nobody expected it to happen as quickly as it did,” said Bessette. “She was pain free, and she had her whole family around her.” The end came suddenly. When some of her friends from her neighbourhood wanted to visit her at the hospital, she told them she would meet them at a neighbourhood hangout. “She wanted all the Whonnock Kids to go to the pier, and wait for her there,” said Marquet. McGhie was there in spirit, she said. “She’s just the most positive kid there ever was.” • Her blog can be found at kieranmcghie.blogspot.ca.

Be merry As the clock ticks down to Christmas Eve, it is all too easy to get caught up in the panicked race to create the perfect holiday. Bombarded by imagery of idyllic homes and happy families, we sometimes lose ourselves in a pursuit that’s always going to be a little out of reach. And while there’s nothing wrong with trying to make the holidays memorable for us and our loved ones, perfection is a mighty high pillar to climb. Sure, there are those who smugly finished their shopping in November; whose packages and cards have long since been delivered. But most of us mortals lack that organizational gene. We’re the ones still looking for that one last item – the one we thought we’d taken care of, but only now realize we hadn’t. We’re there among the throngs, fear in our eyes as we scan the empty toy shelves for an item that mysteriously appeared on a new letter to Santa. But Christmas isn’t about perfection. Certainly the first Christmas was hardly ideal; the accommodations were a little rough and the timing could have been better. Since then, there have been more than a few holiday disasters – holidays with the wrong presents bought, dinners over cooked, and decorations lost and left unhung. And yet there were likely still smiles, still stories to tell and memories to keep. Think back to your most memorable Christmas and it likely wasn’t the one where nothing went wrong. It was the one where everything felt right – a special moment, a shared laugh, a quiet hug. Yes, Christmas can be chaotic. But it’s up to us to slow it down and remember its true message: kindness and compassion. Have a happy Christmas. –Black Press

Climate talks end ’14 in disarray VICTORIA – In case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure. This one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly B.C. Views stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who Tom Fletcher were threatened with prosecution for defacing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert. These vast 1,500-year-old petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. “Time for a change,” blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. I’ll say it’s time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list. Earlier there was the spectacle of Canada’s national media, reflexively denouncing Ottawa’s supposed inaction on greenhouse gases after U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise climate agreement with China in advance of Peru. “Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister,” chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley, joining other TV networks in falsely portraying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough. This non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a

poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is surrounded by a pile of chips and an American flag. The U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where developing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use. China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, while lame-duck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions. Between them, the U.S. and China account for about half of global humancaused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canada’s share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those “tar sands” protests into perspective. Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission statistics, an event ignored by most media. “Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew by 10.6 per cent over the same period,” the report states. B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima. There she met officials from California and other U.S. states to re-announce their modest efforts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wideeyed innocents might have been left with the mistaken impression that the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enormously thanks to shale oil and gas production. And California continues to produce, by its own state government measure, the

most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America. Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of interest in reducing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell.

“Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew by 10.6 per cent over the same period.” I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on human-caused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes. Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony. But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action. I’ll discuss that next week. January. “We have $5,000 in funds. We’re looking for $20,000 more. It just makes good sense to find the funds to extend it for another month,” said Stephanie Ediger, executive-director of the Alouette Home Start Society, which runs the youth safe house. The shelter’s monthly budget is $25,000, needed for upkeep, groceries and 24-hour a day staffing. “They are five teenagers. They eat a lot.” The safe house, which opened in central Maple Ridge in 2005, no longer qualifies for funding after the federal government adopted its Housing First policy, which focuses on giving people

physical living spaces before providing other services. The society could have applied for a smaller amount of Homelessness Partnering Strategy funding for another year, but Ediger said it didn’t meet the criteria. With the main source of its funding, about $365,000, no longer there, and interim grants exhausted, the Iron Horse is to close its doors Dec. 31. “But Dec. 31 is probably the worst day of the year to do that,” Ediger said. “We’re especially concerned about the youth 16 and under.” The shelter is also used by kids from outside of the community, but more than a third

of those who stay at the shelter are from Maple Ridge. Before Iron Horse opened in 2005, homeless kids had to go to a safe house in Vancouver. That often derailed plans for family mediation and schooling, as well as introducing them to a more street-entrenched lifestyle, the society said. Ediger said the goal is to raise enough money to stay open until Jan. 31, while in the meantime staff will find a way to reinvent the program so it qualifies for funding. So far, the society has provincial funding for a third of its future operating costs for six months, providing the federal government and society raise the other two

thirds. “Our board is committed to keeping the shelter open [until Jan. 31]. We’re committed to raising that amount,” said Ediger. The appeal is being made to the public, but people are also asked to contact Conservative MP Randy Kamp and Liberal MLAs Doug Bing and Marc Dalton.

Dunlop said the best way to protect yourself is to pick up your mail every day. And if you’re planning a holiday, get someone to pick up your mail daily or use Canada Post’s Hold Mail service. If you see suspicious types lurking around a mail box, call police. If you see a vandalized mail box, call Canada Post at 1-800-267-1177. For any incorrectly delivered letters, write “delivered to wrong address” on the envelope and mail the item. If it’s addressed to someone not at your address write, “not at this address” and mail the item. Police say that working together will go a long way towards reducing instances of mail theft and said that every second day a mail box is damaged or robbed in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows. Up to mid November of this year, 176 reports of mail theft have been filed in Maple Ridge. Canada Post phases out door-to-door delivery at some five million homes in efforts to save payroll costs.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME

VEGAS Meet Vegas this big teddy bear! Sadly his owners were not financially able to care for him. Vegas previously lived with two other large dogs and children. We recommend a home with kids over 8 years. He is housebroken and rides well in cars. He loves going to new places to meet new friends and sniff everything!! His temperament is described as active, playful with a very friendly cuddly side. He is a big strong boy who would benefit from an active, confident owner.

I am at the Maple Ridge location. You can contact me by Email mapleridge@spca.bc.ca
