Audit aims to create discussion about safety in city’s south end By Tamara Cunningham The News bulleTiN

Canada World Youth volunteers hope to give Nanaimo something to talk about with a new audit on women’s safety. An audit on women’s sense of safety in south Nanaimo was presented at the Harbourfront Library Friday as a starting point for discussion and a more in-depth study on safety. The audit, done by Jillian Der, 18, and Siti Habibah Rhadiabullah, 19, as part of a three-month Canada World Youth program, looked at the area around Haliburton, Irwin and Victoria streets and the top issues affecting safety, from overgrown bushes to poor lighting and a lack of signs pointing people toward emergency resources. The intersection of Irwin and Sabiston streets was so dark, the study noted

that it was hard to find the sidewalks and there were inadequately marked and lit bus stops. In a preliminary survey at the Nanaimo Women’s Centre, participants also noted that the Needham and Haliburton Street bus stop in particular felt ‘exceptionally unsafe’ and refused to use it. Der, who walked south Nanaimo with a group of women during the audit, said she was surprised at how dark and isolated it was. Her host house is in the same area. “I’ve walked along there at night by myself and I try not to think about that because then you get into a frame of mind that’s fearful,” she said. “But when you take it all in and you look at how dark it is and how easy it would be for someone to sneak up on you or turn a corner and all of a sudden there’s someone there and there’s no lights on in the houses and you don’t know where to go for help ... it’s unnerving.” Der said the audit is surface level but hopes it leads to conversations about women’s safety needs and how they have to be addressed.

i try not to think about that because then you get into a frame of mind that’s fearful.

Recommendations include better lighting on streets like Irwin, better identified bus stops and signs directing people to emergency resource areas. Lesley Clarke, executive director with the Nanaimo Women’s Centre believes their work advances dialogue, especially about people coming to Nanaimo and how safe they feel. “I really applaud these youth women for taking this on,” she said. “It was really interesting to have their perspective and I think that would be useful information to add to a larger safety audit.”

Campaign ends with success The Nanaimo Community Hospice Society has netted $1.5 million in a capital fundraising campaign aimed at helping it move into a new home. The hospice society announced a successful end to a more than two-year long Expand the Heart of Hospice campaign. The wrap-up happened at a reception for retiring executive director and new Nanaimo city councillor Wendy Pratt. The society launched its fundraising campaign in 2012 to help move into a facility on St. George Crescent that is twice the size of its former building. It had outgrown its previous location with an increasing demand for services and was “bursting at the seams,” according to Pratt. The fundraising effort generated $1.5 million, which will go toward fulfilling a capital wish list that includes paving a parking lot and replacing the roof on an adjoining rental property. The hospice society has more than 150 volunteers and staff providing support.

to have. It’s kind of like it belongs to the house at this time of the year.” The Departure Bay Neighbourhood Association is also a supporter of the Christmas tree, providing a donation to the firefighters’ union. Karen Hovestad, the association’s past president, said the tree contributes to fellowship among neighbours. “You could call it a symbol of connectivity because we’re all looking at it,” said Hovestad. “We, as a group, contribute to support it and it’s just an extension of the good neighbour feeling.” The lights will stay up until early January.

A Nanaimo travel agent is raising cash to help kids with neuro-developmental issues. Tarita Davencock, who has multiple sclerosis, understands it can be tough arranging a vacation for people confined to a wheelchair. To help mobility-challenged people see the world, Davencock created Tarita’s Travel Connections in 2012. “I’ve been a travel agent for 17 years and I have MS, which is why I started Tarita’s Travel Connections, because I saw a real need,” Davencock said. “A missing part of the travel equation was the accessible travel niche.” Davencock now works with Special Globe, a U.S.-based worldwide travel agency that launched in November for people with disabilities. Davencock is a “travel partner,” or highly specialized travel agent who arranges travel venues and accommodations for Special Globe clients. “I’m an accessible travel specialist, so I arrange travel for people who have very special needs, whether you be blind, deaf, in a wheelchair or have a child with a disability – something that is a special need that has to be addressed before you travel. I have contacts throughout the world that arrange accessible vacations,” Davencock said. “Somebody wants to see the pyramids, but they’re in a wheelchair, we can arrange that, or a gondola ride in Venice.” Davencock and Special Globe are raising money for Nanaimo Unique Kids, a local charity helping children with neuro-developmental disabilities, by donating 15 per cent of commissions from travel booked between Dec. 15 and May 15. Money raised will help Nanaimo Unique Kids operate social and recreational programs, and take children on tours through Vancouver International Airport, which offers familiarization programs to prepare children with autism for the experience of flying. Blair Pinker, left, and Jason Bradley are among the Nanaimo firefighters who add a little colour to Nanaimo’s skyline every Christmas. Firefighters have set up and illuminated a Christmas tree on top of Sugarloaf Mountain above Departure Bay since the 1960s.

Firefighters set up iconic tree By Karl yu THE NEWS BullETIN

The Christmas tree atop Sugarloaf Mountain is again shining out like a beacon in the Hammond Bay and Departure Bay Road area, lighting up the skyline. While a real tree was originally used, the current incarnation is actually a 12-metre pole with a frame. Setting up the lights is the responsibility of the Nanaimo Professional Firefighters Local 905 union. According to Jason Bradley, firefighter and the head organizer, it is a long-standing tradition dating back approximately to the 1960s, October 13 – December 15, 2004 with the fire department VANCOUVER ISLAND – LOWER MAINLAND October 13 – December 15, 2004 at Departure Bay handling Ferry schedules are subject to change without notice.

I was in that department at the time, it moved up to the Northfield volunteer fire department until 2003 when I got hired full time as a firefighter and I’ve sort of been taking it with me wherever I go,” said Bradley. Wade Gaylard, who lends an electrical outlet on his property and power for the tree, said it adds to the festive atmosphere this time of year. “It’s a huge aura when I look up the hill,” Gaylard said. “I can see it through my dining room window in the back and a glimpse out of my kitchen window, but it’s just kind of neat

EDITORIAL

Find meaning this Christmas We hope someone brings all our dear readers some figgy pudding this week as Nanaimo celebrates Christmas. Most of us will enjoy the next few days as a time to connect with families, friends and loved ones, carry on traditions, give and receive gifts and celebrate the yule season. We can observe religious ceremony if we like, or none at all. The holiday season represents all of those activities, and it is also a reward – the culmination of a month’s worth of shopping, decorating, preparing, hustling and bustling. We can breathe a sigh of relief once we see that Dad did like the tie we picked out; the Christmas tree didn’t catch fire; the turkey turned out moist. These next few days will be important to our well-being. As much as we tried to keep a brave face in mall parking lots and at store checkouts this past month, we couldn’t help but be guilty of a little grumbling and grinching now and again. We got through the stresses and pressures of the season, and Christmas came, just the same as it always does, and certainly we deserve to take a moment to enjoy it. Christmas is partly about consumerism, and perhaps that’s OK on occasion. We don’t necessarily like the idea of crumpling up reams of unrecyclable gift wrap and stuffing it into garbage bags, but it doesn’t mean we’ve sacrificed our values – we’ve just decided that family values are more important on Christmas morning. And if we want to try to do better, well, that’s what new year’s resolutions are for. We wish all our readers a merry Christmas. There is happiness in our holiday hearths and also in our hearts and all around us, and it is just a matter of hugging it close to our chests. May we all find the meaning of Christmas, whatever that might be.

Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of interest in reducing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell. I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on human-caused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes. Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony. But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action. I’ll discuss that next week. u Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press newspapers. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Re: Councillors call for report about conference centre, Dec. 16. Finally. A Nanaimo city council that is taking action to end the madness of the conference centre. It breaks my heart to see how much of our hard-earned dollars go to keep this sinking business afloat. Any private business would have pulled the plug a long time ago – or would have been forced to. In my opinion, it was the egos of former municipal

leaders that allowed for this to happen and for the absence of reality to lead the way. Now, mayor and council are looking at repurposing the facility. It’s about time. It is the right thing to do and I applaud this decision. I am proud that this city council has the strength and fortitude to do what is best and put an end to the nightmare that is the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

While here, it is nice to hear the word ‘Christmas’ used for Christmas, which is the annual celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ who was born 2,014 years ago.

Also buying presents for others, especially Christmas presents, is not consumerism, but rather it is love for family, friends and the needy.

U.S. President Barack Obama recognized Cuba’s efforts against ebola in Africa. This is just the tip of what Cuba has done internationally in terms of volunteer medical aid. Being first and last with aid during the Haiti disaster being one of their efforts. According to a column in The Guardian this month,

“If the blockade really were to be dismantled, it would not only be a vindication of Cuba’s remarkable record of social justice at home and solidarity abroad. It would also be a boon for millions around the world who would benefit from a Cuba unshackled.”

Will trustee Kimler apologize to staff for a comment he tweeted in May? Pulak and Shantz saw banners unfurled; Sisters Van Osch at the nationals curled! On Gummer and Gallo who sweep with great might, When shots I’m attempting come up a bit light. Supporter of judo, now Larsen will speak; Fiandor is coaching with expert technique. Davie, Theberge, and Kruger could see: Clark and Fiandor were tops in B.C.!

Fitness in general for health is a key, As doctors like Kurytnik and Cline will agree! Lott was in charge of big project this year: Nanaimo played host to a Summer Games here. All volunteers deserve praise that is loud; Our city’s success should make us all proud!

Bikram hot yoga will make Carroll’s day, While climbing up walls comes Jonas-McRae. Gilks as a trainer lifts plenty of weight; Boot camp with Wengel for fitness is great.

Now greetings to people whose business is sport; They cover the games, and scores they report. McKenzie at Daily now gives us the news; Marshall on radio offers his views.

For workout in gyms, Palladini’s a star; Northridge has Jung, will say Hancox-Barr. For Jakobsen, Robertson, balance is fine; Pilates with Merrett your core will align!

And here at the Bulletin, covering his beat, Sakaki does sports from his editor’s seat. Checking his stories and facts with great care, Meeting each deadline with moments to spare!

Cycling comes Boon, with Argyle and Grey; Thibault and Simms, of cyclocross say. Mountain bike riders McGarrigle hails; McMillan and members were building new trails.

Hansen and Young like to go for a walk; Of Special Olympics, Taylor will talk. Crushers with Gould in a derby will roll; Stilwell in wheelchair still reaches her goal!

A

nd now to conclude this holiday rhyme, Some favourite themes I’ll state at this time:

With track and field action at Rotary Bowl, Setting new records was Heisterman’s goal. Katzberg and Clare, with Doughty were back, Successful in project to Light Up the Track!

Fitness has value for health and for heart, So keep yourself active and try to take part.

unning is fun, will Thibodeau say; RPalfery, Bastion Club members keep fit every day. Trajan, and Davies set pace; Seaman was champ in 100K race!

VIU programs for fitness and fun, See Hunter with Kellow and Hyde on the run. Gildersleeve, Robb, and Thompson could cheer Honoured with reason as Athletes of Year!

Games that are fun, more kids will enjoy, But ‘win at all costs’ can pleasure destroy. For players when young, learning’s the goal; Improvement and effort should coaches extol.

In cross-country running, DeSchiffart did win, With Mousseau and Morris, Miller and Pynn.

Harding rates credit for parks and rec team; Regional centre earns Cooper esteem.

No matter what sport, one rule is the same: Always play fair, whatever the game! And try to remember that when you compete, Be humble in winning, show grace in defeat.

Punk rockers squashing stereotypes

Female-fronted band faces unique challenges in male-dominated genre

You want to be taken seriously outside of your looks.

BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

W

hen Dusty Exner takes to the stage each night with her punkrock band Kill Matilda, she wants to be viewed no differently than her male counterparts. Unfortunately, that usually isn’t the case. “There is a lot more focus on a female’s looks than on their talent and that is a challenge,” Exner told the News Bulletin. “You want to be taken seriously outside of your looks.” On Saturday (Dec. 27) the femalefronted band will perform at the Cambie. Its performance in the Harbour City is one of the final stops on a North American tour that has lasted nearly seven months. “We knew that the only way we could break into the market was by doing a really big tour,” Exner said. Kill Matilda was born in Vancouver in 2008 and has released a number of records including I Want Revenge and #Punk#Zombie#RockNRoll. Its sound has been described as cross between My Chemical Romance, Pat Benatar and The Misfits. “Our sound is sort of like sexy dance punk,” Exner said. Unlike some genres, such as country, where there is a decent mix of both genders, the punk-rock genre is still predominately male centric. Exner explained that because punkrock is a male-dominated genre, people don’t take her as seriously right away. “People are always a little surprised when I play the guitar well. There is an element of sexuality that is present,” she said. “It’s like, ‘oh, how hot is this lead singer? How much skin is this person showing?” The British Columbian points out that it is extremely rare to find a band that is more females than males, especially

in her genre. “You never see a band that is mostly women and one dude,” she said. “The crowd is predominantly men. You might get some women and some men, but you’ll never see a crowd that is two thirds women and one third men.” Earlier this year, Kill Matilda released a music video for its song, I Want

Revenge, which features only women. “What I wanted to do was make a sexy cool video that wasn’t objectifying women in all of the conventional ways,” Exner explained. “I wanted to have only women that were strong and rock ’n’ roll, but was very female centric and sexy without being compromising. really cool women that we knew who were doing all these really cool things and got them all involved.” The basis behind the video was to go against the stereotypical rock videos, which predominately feature men, or women in roles that are more objectified. “We’re flipping that script. We’re presenting men with an image that is somewhat challenging because you don’t see any dudes in that video, but it is still awesome. It is something that you can still get into,” Exner said. “All women or a ton of women in the rock scene is something that can be normal and not threatening to sort of the old boys club of rock ’n’ roll. It can be inclusive and awesome. It doesn’t have to be weird or gross.” Although the video has received positive comments on YouTube, Exner explained that following the video’s release, Kill Matilda received hate mail. “As soon as we put it out we got a ton of internet hate,” Exner said. “We actually think that it has to do with the fact that punk rock dudes and metal dudes and rock ’n’ roll dudes watch this video, they don’t see themselves represented in it and they don’t like it. There was actually backlash from dudes about this video, saying that we were not punk rock at all.” As a band that lives mostly on the road, Kill Matilda is grateful for every little moment of success. “It’s a thankless job,” Exner said. “For every single moment of glory there is an hour of shit and work and pain and people not valuing you.” Kill Matilda performs at the Cambie, 63 Victoria Cres., on Dec. 27. Darwin is still a young guy who has not had a lot of experiences in his short life. He is fearful of new experiences, and does need time and patience to trust that we are not setting him up for something scary. He really loves playing with other dogs and would probably benefit from living with another social confident dog. Darwin is easily over excited and sometimes has difficulty dealing with his excitement, he will need lots of exercise to help him with his extra energy needs. So far his favorite game is to play fetch, but he can get carried away quickly if the guardian doesn’t help him tone it down. He will need a family who is dedicated to his socialization and continue with his training. Darwin should not go into a home with children, teenage children would be alright in the right home. If this sounds like your kind of dog come in and talk to the staff about this sweet guy!

July 15, 1948 - November 25, 2014 With profound sorrow, the family wishes to announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father and grandfather, Jim Hull, at his home in Nanaimo, BC. Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the owner and staff at Green Thumb Garden Centre for allowing members of Altrusa International of Nanaimo to use their greenhouse for our annual Christmas swag fundraiser. The friendly, helpful staff made us welcome and the venue was fabulous for our purpose. BEEF To the grinch who siphoned gas twice from the residents’ bus parked at the seniors’ facility and in doing so, damaged the bus. Residents, who have minimal outings, missed out on their annual Christmas shopping. BOUQUET To the two lovely ladies who let me jump the queue at the Bowen Road post office so I could mail my parcel to Toronto in time to collect my daughter from afterschool care. Your small act of kindness has not gone unnoticed. BEEF To the city for not acknowledging and acting regarding dog owners who feel their human rights extend to their dogs and supersede my human rights. They don’t adhere to the bylaws and there is no one to enforce them. BOUQUET Royal Canadian Legion Branch 257 Ladies Auxiliary thanks Northridge Quality Foods for its donation of half the cost of food for Nov. 11 roast beef dinner. Money raised is divided among families in need at Christmas. BEEF To the grocery store. Why do all the stores have discounted food except one? I’ve seen you give it to your friends, not the public. BOUQUET To Todd and his staff at Vancouver Island Tree Service for accommodating our need for specific-length boughs for this year’s Altrusa Christmas swag-making project. Your willingness to help us out made lighter work for our elves. BEEF To people who tell the newspaper, rather than the SPCA, of neglected or abused animals. Do the poor creature a favour and phone the SPCA.

BOUQUET To the Cambie Hotel. Paradise Isle Seniors appreciates your generous donation to our Christmas basket.

BOUQUET To the north end Thrifty Foods. So beautifully decorated for the Christmas season. Bah humbug to the other grocery stores for no effort at all.

BEEF To transit, the city and the downtown business association for temporarily closing bus routes from 3-6 p.m. to accommodate the Santa Claus parade. The bus stops did not state where I could catch an alternate bus. I am more than 60 years old, physically challenged and was forced to walk home with numerous parcels.

BEEF To those who rob people and charities over the holiday season. BOUQUET To all who set up a Christmas tree or strung lights, hung decorative balls, etc. Whether modest or magnificent, each bulb or item gave praise to baby Jesus, the Son of God. I asked God to bless each home or business as I passed by.

BOUQUET To the Lions Club and the Coast Bastion Hotel for the yearly event at Christmas where about 50 residents, volunteers and staff from three care facilities are taken for a Christmas feast, music and bus ride to Ladysmith to see the lights.

BEEF To gas stations in Nanaimo for gouging customers. Your prices should be lower than Vancouver’s – they have additional TransLink taxes, we don’t. Your greed will come back to bite you some day.

BEEF To the woman walking her Jack Russell dog in Colliery Dam Park without a leash in a leashed area. Your dog attacked my shitzu. You never said sorry. My dog was hurt – would you like the vet bill?

BOUQUET To all the individuals, groups and businesses who helped make Christmas brighter for many Bayview Elementary School families. The true meaning of Christmas is alive in our community.

BOUQUET To two young Clippers players who came to my door with a lovely poinsettia for being a season ticket holder for many years.

BOUQUET To the wonderful teachers, staff and volunteers at Randerson Ridge Elementary School for putting together a great Christmas show. Your work is appreciated. BEEF To the RCMP squad car left running in the allotted space near hospital emergency. The squad car next to it was not running. I watched for 10 minutes and nobody returned. This blatant disregard for the environment and our tax dollars is disgusting. BOUQUET To Pleasant Valley Elementary School teachers, staff and students who put on the best-ever Christmas show. Well done, everyone. BEEF To the taxi company that turned down giving an elderly lady a ride home because she had Christmas trees – all because your vans were three days old. You had no problems driving her home for the past 14 years. BOUQUET To Jane Saunders, the music teacher at North Oyster Elementary School. Her energy and enthusiasm produced a Christmas concert of which the community is justifiably proud. BEEF To a world offshore bank in Nanaimo. Let it be known small business has been the backbone of Canada. You have now chased out many good small businesses away. BOUQUET To the person who found my purse in a shopping cart at Country Grocer and handed it in. Thank you for being honest.

Beefs & Bouquets is a free forum to give thanks or express views on issues and events. The News Bulletin reserves the right to edit or refuse submissions. Length is limited to 40 words and two submissions per person per week. A winner will be selected at random to receive a floral bouquet from Turley’s Florist and Potting Shed. Mail or deliver to the News Bulletin, 777B Poplar St., Nanaimo, V9S 2H7 or e-mail to bulletinboard@nanaimobulletin.com. Fax to 250-753-0788.

BOUQUET To the Santa at Nanaimo North Town Centre. I saw him game for anything – posing with a group of about 40 kids from the Boys and Girls Club, laying across three ladies’ laps, and with a snake and even a duck on pet photo day. Even sweeter were the endless hugs and little dances with the seniors as they passed by.

BEEF To traditions that obligate families to buy more toys, more food and more decorations when on a daily basis the necessary needs of a family are hard to come by.

FREE City-Wide Delivery FREE Blister/Bubble Packaging Diabetes Care Centre Injection Pharmacist ON-SITE

BEEF To all the smokers who butt out their cigarettes and leave them on the ground. This is just as much littering as throwing garbage on the ground. Please keep British Columbia beautiful.

Submit your own Beef or Bouquet

BEEF To a transit bus filled to capacity with only young people and a bus driver who made it necessary for a 76-year-old lady with a full shopping cart to stand at the front, holding on to the bar.

Welcome to the driver’s seat

Hot Laps in the Subaru WRX STI with retired WRC Driver Tommi Mäkinen.

Visit the gallery at DrivewayCanada.ca

2014 car year in review It’s hard to believe that 2014 is over. Subaru WRX STI: Where did it go? At a time when we tend MSRP $37,995-$44,995 to reflect on what we’ve done, what we The all-new 2015 Subaru WRX STI is can do better and what was awesome, an incredible car within its own right. that brings me to my personal Car Year It has a cult following and has the in Review. street cred to back it up. And just when It takes a special vehicle or experience you think you’re getting the hang of by Alexandra Straub to stick in my memory. Not to say that putting it around the Buttonwillow short-term memory loss is a problem but Raceway in California, you let Tommi with constant streams of information bombarding Mäkinen take you for a spin. Gosh, it’s like he could my brain, it’s not hard to forget where I was and drive ten times faster, smoother and more confidently what I was testing a week ago! in his sleep. Heck, he had one arm on the windowsill Though this is a review of wheels past, because we when he wasn’t shifting or going into a tight corner. often test vehicles well ahead of their full production Moral of the story: the car makes you feel like a hero this also points to what people will be driving in even if you can’t drive like Tommi. And what a cool 2015. experience. Let’s start small because the micro cars might be Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat: miniscule in price, but aren’t about to disappoint. MSRP $63,495 (but the new 2015 Challenger SXT Nissan Micra: MSRP Range, $9,998-$15,748 starts at an MSRP of $28,495) For under $10K, this pint-sized vehicle can be yours. The name says it all. Put “Hell” in something and But just because it’s inexpensive doesn’t mean it’s you’re bound to have a helluva good time, right? cheap. And it’s a blast to drive. Sure, 109 horsepower Especially when you have 707 horsepower at your won’t get you where you need to go in a flash, but disposal. But to say I wasn’t apprehensive to take this that’s not the point of this car. Besides, for basic beast on the track at Portland International Raceway transportation, it has the goods. would be a lie. And the reason is, American muscle cars haven’t always been the pinnacle of exceptional Ford Fiesta 1.0L, $15,999 + $1,500 for the 1.0L option; for an MSRP of $17,499 handling dynamics. Sure, it has a lot of horses, but will it get me through the corner with minimal body roll? Ford’s smallest engine available here in Canada sure Or will the steering have enough feel that I won’t be packs a lot of punch. And considering it only weighs constantly inputting actions? 98 kg when assembled, this 1.0L, 3-cylinder powerIn this case? Hell(cat) yes. I was blown away as to plant is pretty impressive. If you opt for this bitehow well this car drove, not just on the track, but on sized engine, you’ll be getting 123 horsepower and the street, too. Disclaimer: if you need to get anywhere 125 lb-ft of torque (148 lb-ft with the overboost). The quickly, this isn’t the car for you. People will talk your Fiesta was designed and engineered in Europe so it ear off about it if you give them an opportunity. isn’t bad to look at either.

“GO FOR THE BEST”

Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC: MSRP $37,200 (AMG version is $50,500) Another vehicle that shone brightly is Mercedes-Benz’s GLA. The luxury compact crossover starts at under $40K but does so many things well. It has a hatchback, great styling and the fuel economy is quite good, too. I wouldn’t even need the AMG version to keep me happy. It’s just a stellar vehicle. MINI Cooper S: MSRP starts at $25,490 Perhaps the biggest disappointment this year comes in the shape of the MINI Cooper S. I’ve loved these cars for so long, but perhaps electronics have ruined it for me. Yes, it’s much more competent and has some great features, but I miss the days of the supercharged version. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a super fun car to drive, but the downshift rev matching in the Cooper S with the manual transmission was not amazing. It was harsh and jerky. I also feel it lost a little bit of personality along its way to adulthood. I’ll forever love them, quirks and all. Honda Fit: MSRP range $14,495-$21,295 The Fit is on my list because I think it is just such a fabulous little car. The Magic Seats really are magic, but the new touchscreen is a huge deterrent. I strongly dislike it. I like buttons. I don’t mind if there are a few to complement the screen but I feel it takes my eyes off the road for too long, even if I’m familiar with the system.

Question of the Week The price of gas has dropped significantly in recent weeks. If you plan to buy a car this year will lower prices at the pump encourage you to buy a larger vehicle? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer. QUESTION
