Quesnel Community Foundation has grants to give ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter It’s time once again for local charitable organizations to make their requests known to the Quesnel Community Foundation (QCF.) The latest funding cycle began in November and extends to Jan. 16, 2015 when all requests must be in the hands of the Foundation. The QCF was established in 2001 and exists to meet the needs of the community through the growth and management
of permanent endowment funds. The goal is to use the income generated to promote the well being of the community by providing grants to charitable organizations. In 2014, QCF handed out $57,000 including grants and scholarships and board member Bob Lebeck said they hope to give out at least that much in 2015. A nine-member board of directors is responsible for the overall policies and practices of the Foundation and board members

join with community members on the Grants Committee to consider applications for funding. Grants and scholarships are given to local projects. The local area is defined as west to Nazko, east to Wells/Barkerville, north to Hixon and south to McLeese Lake. If your organization and project fall within these boundaries the first step is to submit a Letter of Intent to determine basic eligibility and this must be done by Jan. 16, 2015. The forms for your Letter
of Intent can be found on the website, www.quesnelfoundation.ca under How to Receive Grants and must be submitted electronically before the deadline of Jan. 16, 2015. If your group needs assistance contact Cathy Briggs, 250-747-1739. The second stage requires the submission of a more detailed formal grant application which is sent to groups who qualify once all Letters of Intent have been reviewed. The website is very comprehensive and provides
details on what sort of projects are likely to be approved, how the decision is made regarding granting and other details pertinent to the process. After a grant is awarded, donees are expected to follow a specific list of performance and management procedures. Monitoring of projects will be performed by the Foundation to ensure funds are used appropriately. Projects must be completed by Oct. 31 of the calendar year. Projects that cannot be completed must

apply for an extension. If for any reason the project cannot be completed, all grant monies must be returned to QCF. “The Grant Committee evaluates each project for its impact on the community,” Lebeck said. “The amount granted will depend on how many applications are received and how much money is available for the given grant cycle.” If you have questions not covered by the website information, e-mail qcf@ shaw.ca.

We often hear stories about the good and bad effects about consuming coffee. One idea that hasn’t been scientifically proven but looks retrospectively at large groups of people worldwide. There is a link between drinking coffee and reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes. It doesn’t seem to matter if the coffee is decaf or not but it is recommended that the coffee be drunk with little or no sugar and milk. E-cigarettes are not legal in Canada but in countries where they are, there has been a significant increase in the number of youth who have never smoked start to use this new device. This group was almost twice as likely to start smoking regular cigarettes than those who never used e-cigarettes. That’s a concern to health professionals because nicotine is an addictive drug and can have adverse effects on the adolescent brain. There has been much in the media lately about vitamins and whether they are worth the money. One supplement that is worth it is the one to help minimize age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD can lead to blindness, but good scientific studies have show that formulas containing zinc, lutein and other products can help prevent this serious eye problem. Our pharmacists can clarify which is the best combination. There are thousands of different vitamin formulations on the market in North America. How can you tell which is right for you? That’s our job as your pharmacist and we’ll be happy to help you with accurate information to take some of the guesswork out of this very popular subject.

Child poverty requires action
E
veryone is gearing up for the Christmas season, that wonderful time of year focused on giving. There are food drives collecting for the local food bank, and campaigns of all kinds to help those in need, including toy drives trying to ensure that all children have something waiting for them under the Christmas tree. This is a great thing, and it is good-hearted people that both organize and contribute to them. But the best they can hope for, and it is a good goal, is to alleviate some of the need. The sad fact is, the issue of child poverty is not going to be solved by a once-a-year campaign. According to the annual report released by First Call, a coalition of advocacy groups, child poverty is on the rise in B.C. rather than declining. According to the B.C. Child Poverty Report Card, 169,240 children were living below the poverty line in this province in 2012. Last year, the report said 153,000 children. First Call set out 19 recommendations in their report with a goal of reducing the child poverty rate across the province to seven per cent by 2020. The recommendations cover a range, from raising the minimum wage to increased child tax benefits and rescinding cuts to Employment Insurance. But what they all have in common is the need for provincial and federal governments to address the problem. When we see the enormity of the problem of child poverty, it is clear it is time for upper levels of government to join in the fight to make some long-term change.
Climate talks end 2014 in disarray In case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure. This one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who were threatened with prosecution for defacing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert. These vast 1,500-year-old petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. “Time for a change!” blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. I’ll say it’s time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list. Earlier there was the spectacle of Canada’s national media, reflexively denouncing Ottawa’s supposed inaction on greenhouse gases after U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise climate agreement with China in advance of Peru. “Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister,” chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley,
Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views joining other TV networks in falsely portraying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough. This non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is surrounded by a pile of chips and an American flag. The U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where developing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use. China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, while lame-duck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions. Between them, the U.S. and China account for
most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America. Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of interest in reducing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell. I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on humancaused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes. Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony. But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action. I’ll discuss that next week. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

about half of global humancaused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canada’s share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those “tar sands” protests into perspective. Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission statistics, an event ignored by most media. “Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew by 10.6 per cent over the same period,” the report states. B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima. There she met officials from California and other U.S. states to re-announce their modest efforts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wideeyed innocents might have been left with the mistaken impression that the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enormously thanks to shale oil and gas production. And California continues to produce, by its own state government measure, the

Grateful hockey players give back When Quesnel Thunder teams looked at giving back to the community who has really supported them, they decided that each of the four teams would collect the ingredients for a Christmas dinner for four needy families in the Quesnel area. Each family on each of the teams was assigned an item for the four baskets. In addition, each family was asked to donate $10 towards a Save-On Foods gift card so the deserving family could get a turkey or a ham or whatever perishables they might need to round out the holiday meal. All the items were put in a laundry basket and some of the boys from each team delivered it to the Quesnel Family Services who had selected the four deserving families. Lending a helping hand The Quesnel figure skating Club’s (QFSC) CanSkate program teaches beginner skaters the skills necessary for a variety of ice sports such as figure skating, hockey or ringette to name a few. Many members of the QFSC help to teach these aspiring skaters at practice. The second session of the Quesnel Figure Skating Club’s CanSkate program is starting in the New Year, Jan. 6 and 8. Lessons take place Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at the Twin Arenas. This 14-week learn-to-skate program is designed for beginner skaters wishing to develope their skating skills for a number of ice sports as well as for recreational purposes. erenity shows that last week wasn’t an aberration as the enjoy a 4-3 comeback win over Bear as the BCS juggernaut continues it’s historic run with 5-3 victory over Fraser River. In a classic example of why the FHL has thrived for over two decades, Serenity scored three late goals to upset the Bear Boys 4-3. The contest definitely featured some Christmas spirit as Bear fessed up that a last second first half goal on a bizarre play was actually off-side. This allowed the Builders to hold a rare 1-0 Zamboni time lead thanks to an unassisted back-hander by Chad The Comet Swanson. However, with the Zamboni driver nestled all snug in their bed, the two teams carried on with feet like lead. Somehow Bear managed to score three in a row as Lee Nitro Naeth, Kieron Cowboy Langen and Randy Grandpa Crofts scored on scrambles. That’s when the extremely erratic play ensued as the two inches of fresh powder had the Bear D coughing up the puck like Aqualung. Taking advantage of the plethora of puck presents was Captain Dan Lowndes and Wade The Blade Fenton who scored to tie up the contest that most assumed would be heading to a shoot-out. That’s when the man with the Golden Gloves appeared as King Richard Lindstrom gingerly skated down the wing with a twinkle in his eye not seen in seven long months. With a deft move at the blue line giving him a glimmer of hope, King Richard lobbed a sharp angled prayer toward the net which fooled the Bear tender for the winning goal. The other contest saw Fraser River put up a valiant effort in the 5-3 BCS victory in a game
Steve Dodge
PAPERBACK WRITER they never led. The win now gives BCS an unprecedented 12 game winning streak which is the longest in FHL history surpassing the Mike The Mechanic led Red squad who had 10 wins in a row in 2009-10. BCS is now threatening the 15 game undefeated streak that the The Flash Fenton led Red squad enjoyed way back in 99-2000. The secret to the BCS domination is the best forwards and D men Home Hardware can buy as they are truly firing on all cylinders. Leading BCS to victory was Justin Time Rasmussen who scored twice and added three assists to give him a whopping 20 points in the past month alone. His faithful sidekick, Colin Cross-check Keis scored one and added a pair of assists as Bruce Moose Broughton scored his sixth of the season to give him 24 points which is the best point total for any D-men this year. Scoring the Goal-of-the-Game was another D-man as Michael Doughty Dodge scored on a topshelf post and in howitzer that had his teammates thinking he must be adopted. Replying for the second place Chevy Crew was Jiminy Cricket Sales, Jason JJ Johnson and Kevin Nightrider Hesslegrave who thanks to KITT leads all scorers with 40 points. Steve Dodge is a defensive winger with Bear Communications and an Observer contributor.
