Merry Christmas, readers! There will be no newspaper published on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, or Boxing Day, Dec. 26. Publication will resume Monday, Dec. 29.

A white Christmas is in the forecast TRE VOR CR AWLEY

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas and according to Environment Canada, that may yet be the case. There is some snow on the ground, but lately, warm temperatures have melted much of it, but there may be some more flurries on the way, said Doug Lundquist, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

Avalanche potential in area still dangerous ARNE PETRYSHEN

Though avalanche conditions should be predictable over the Christmas long weekend, Avalanche Canada noted there is still potential for danger. James Floyer, public avalanche forecaster with Avalanche Canada said it’s been an interesting past weekend with some snowfall in the region around Cranbrook

FOR THE TOWNSMAN

It could be the last days for the facial hair of these mustachioed gentlemen. Members of the Rocky Mountain Naturalists banded together to form “Nats for Nads,” for the month of “Movember,” to raise money and awareness of men’s cancers such as prostate, testicular and other related health issues. The total raised was $1,905. Left to right are Daryl, Frank, Jim, Greg, George and John seated.

Scott rocks in Diamond documentary ARNE PE TRYSHEN

A local Neil Diamond performance artist will be featured in a documentary set for worldwide release. Jason Scott will be performing on Feb. 14 and that performance will be filmed for the documentary. Back in the spring, Scott got a call from a director in Florida. The director, from Midnight Pass Entertainment, told Scott he would be doing a video documentary

project he’d been planning for a number of years. The movie is entitled “Play Me” after one of Diamond’s songs. “It’s going to be a documentary on Neil Diamond performance artists,” he said. “There were originally 10 of us who were chosen, now there’s 12. It’s worldwide.” The other artists are in places like U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Australia and Malta. Scott is the the only

Canadian performing for the show. The director looked up Scott’s background and performances. “The movie isn’t about who’s the best one, it’s what goes on in our lives to do this — what drives us to do it,” Scott said. “Most of us have got, if not a heartbreaking story, then a motivational story that has culminated in us finally doing what we are all doing now. What our story line

is.”

He said he doesn’t like the term tribute artist or impersonator. He is unique in that he’s the only performer that doesn’t use a live band. “I use tracks, I’m a one-man show and I carry an audience for near two hours by myself, without a band and no nets,” he said. “So it’s kind of like a high wire act.”

Diamond doc features Cranbrook’s Scott Continued from page 1 Scott then went to the Columbo Lodge and explained the motion picture and what he was hoping to accomplish with his act. “We struck up a deal,” Scott said, adding that his overhead is paying to pull the show off. “But I wanted to have a show that illustrated what I do when I go and perform on the road.” Scott said he strictly performs at Royal Canadian Legions now. He used to play venues like the Key City Theatre and Royal Theatre in Nelson, but liked the atmosphere and audience at the Legions. “I come from a military family, going back to my dad’s dad, who was in four wars for Canada — he fought from the backs of horses to the backs of tanks, and he survived it all. So it’s kind of special to me to be playing the Royal Canadian Legions.” For the documentary he wanted to get the same kind of atmosphere and so opted for the Columbo Lodge. The pre-performance dinner was also an important part of it. The documentary will be a two-day shoot. The show is on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Cocktails at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and show at 8 p.m. “There are only 32 tables — eight per table,”

he said. “A good way to do it is to buy a whole table. Tickets are $50 a piece. That includes the full-blown, traditional Columbo Lodge, theynever-stop-bringingyou-food dinner.” He advised everyone coming to skip lunch that day. “The filming of the motion picture will be going on during the performance,” he said. “They might have a chat with the people in the crowd before hand, I’m not sure.” PB Pro Audio will be doing the sound. “They’re going to make sure it’s going to be huge quality sound,” he said. “The lighting is going to be a little bit more and will set a really nice mood.” Scott has been a professional singer since 1979, and was part of the West Coast rock music movement — the one that spawned Loverboy, Sweeney Todd and Brian Adams. “I know all those guys. We were part of the same family. We were all playing the West Coast. We were all playing in Rock and Roll cover bands.” He was working with Brian “Too Loud” MacLeod from Headpins on a band called You Are One Too. “We were working on the fourth song of a nine song album, and Brian

up and died of cancer. It just killed him in six months.” At that point the U.S. side of the record label dropped all distribution. “That was it,” he said. He looked in the mirror, wondering if he’d just wasted the last two decades of his life and wondering what he was going to do now. “You can’t start again. You can’t go back to playing bars on Hastings Street,” he said. He eventually made his way to Cranbrook to help a friend run the Tudor House. “I had this one experience with my family where we ended up in a Karaoke bar,” he said. His sister asked him to sing Love on the Rocks by Neil Diamond. The bar had the Canucks game on and most people were watching that with the sound off, while people sang. “I started singing and I got to the second line and I hear this scream from the crowd. I thought the Canucks had just scored,” he said, but the crowd was looking at him. “It hit me that Neil Diamond was falling out of my face.” He thought that maybe he wasn’t done with his old life yet. He said he never knew because he’d always sang in his high register. That lead to his new career.

On Wednesday, December 17, Second Steps Group Daycare sang Christmas songs and handed out candy canes to the community in the Platzl in Kimberley to wish all a merry Christmas.

Slide potential still dangerous, more predictable Continued from page 1 “A lot of areas in the South Columbia region — including the Purcells, the South Rockies and the Lizard Range —had a very similar sort of situation where a reasonable amount of storm snow fell over the weekend. Depending if you’re in a wetter or dryer area it was 30-40 centimetres or 15-20 centimetres. It fell on a slippery crest.” The snow fell on a crest with feathery crystals called surface hoar crystals. “We get that sort of

layer interface forming it can lead to a very good sliding layer and that’s what happened over the weekend,” he said. He noted there were avalanche cycles reported, with some of the biggest in the Kootenay Boundary region where they had avalanches up to 2.5 — that’s half way up the Canadian Avalanche Scale. “Size two is classified as sufficiently large to bury and injure or kill a person. So certainly

sizeable enough to be taken seriously,” he said. “What we’re expecting is another pulse of precipitation coming through on Tuesday into Wednesday. It looks like it’s going to be a little bit less than what we had before so again slightly depending on where you are again.” He said it would be about 10-20 centimetres of snow. “Somewhere like Kootenay Pass is set to be on the higher end of that, whereas around the Cranbrook area that might be a bit lower

— in the 10 cm region,” he said. The snow will add new load to existing weaknesses. He said those could be triggered by a snowmobiler, skier or other traveller in the mountains. “That little extra pulse of precipitation for Tuesday into Wednesday will certainly elevate the danger as well. Whether we’ll see another widespread natural avalanche cycle is not as clear, and that will slightly depend on exact amounts.”

Floyer suspects some of the higher snow areas could see another avalanche cycle. “If you’re only getting sort of 10 or 15 cm it’s less likely that you’ll see natural avalanches occur,” he said. “But it’s still primed for human triggering.” He said the good news is when compared with some of the complex situations that can generate in the backcountry, this is a simple straightforward snow pack problem. “There certainly is the instability there with the potential to catch somebody out that is going to exist through the Christmas period,” he said. “The certainly is the danger and potential to trigger an avalanche that could ruin someone’s day.” Floyer said looking for avalanche activity on similar slopes can provide some information. Starting on smaller slopes and then working up to larger ones is also a good idea. “And of course be wary around loaded ridge lines — anywhere the wind has had a chance to go off and over the ridge line and deposit on the slope below. Those areas are going to be more touchy than areas where the wind has scoured the slope a little bit.” The public can submit information through Avalanche Canada’s website avalanche.ca. Before he begins his work delivering presents to all Kimberley boys and girls, on Christmas Eve, Santa will be riding along with his friends at the Kimberley Fire Department. The fire truck will begin rolling along Kimberley streets beginning at 4:30 p.m. in Marys-

ville. At 5:30 the truck rolls into Forest Crowne for half an hour, then it’s on to Lower Blarchmont from 6 to 7 p.m From 7 to 8 p.m. Santa and the firefighters will be in Chapman Camp. They go through downtown from 8 to 8:30 p.m. and Townsite from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The route ends at the ski hill from 9:30 to

10:15 p.m., then Santa heads off for his other Christmas Eve deliveries. One fire truck will be sent ahead with sirens to let you know the decorated truck with Santa is coming. Run outside and give him a wave and listen to Christmas carols as the truck passes by.

Snow in the forecast for Christmas Continued from page 1 There could be a few flurries on Tuesday afternoon/evening, but Lundquist notes that it’s looking likely that Cranbrook could see some snow on Christmas Eve and into the night. “There’s a cold front forecasted to move through the area on Christmas Eve into Christmas night,” said Lundquist. “So I think the chances of some flurries around will perhaps give you some snow. “…I think it’s possible you’ll have a white Christmas.” Cranbrook has gotten some snow-

fall over the past few months, but it’s been roughly below-average so far, according to Lundquist. The October average is four centimetres (cm), and Cranbrook got nothing this year. November’s average is 24 cm, while this year’s total was 32 cm. December’s average is 34 cm, but there has only been nine cm so far. “We did have that snow early in the year, it started out like a nor-

mal season, but they really like to rack the snow up in December to cover up the rocks and such and it’s been a lacklustre month for snow December this year,” said Lundquist. “…It has been not a great season to start, we’re quite snow-free.” It’s had an impact up the highway, as Kimberley Alpine Resort has a snow pack of 57 cm with only 11 runs open as of Tuesday morning’s snow report. “The month isn’t

The Angels of Christmas

H

ave you ever seen an angel? I will confess that I have … many different times, and many different angels. They all have their own unique look, their own way of being, their own particular way of coming into my life. The word “angel” comes from the Greek word for “messenger”. Greek is the original language of the New Testament in our Bibles, and by thinking of the word in this way, I have had lots of messengers show up in my life, precisely at the times I needed it most. Angels help me focus on what’s really important in life. At this time of year, the most important thing is not all the busy– ness of shopping and baking and preparing. The most important thing is to focus on the heart of what this season is all about. It’s exactly at those times when I get busiest that an angel appears to to help me focus again on the heart of this time. Angels are traditional parts of the Christmas story. They show up all over the place. In Matthew’s story, an angel shows up in a dream to Joseph. In Luke’s story, angels are found everywhere. Gabriel announces her pregnancy to Mary. A whole choir of angels fills the night sky, scaring the shepherds silly as they announce the birth of the baby Jesus, and then they fill the skies singing God’s praises. In both of these gospels, angels are heralds of God’s good news. Angels are often portrayed as a supernatural being. As such, they have a role in most of the world’s major religions. (I guess that makes them ecumenical and

interfaith creatures.) You can find angel stories in the Jewish scriptures (our Old Testament). You will also find them in Buddhism and Hinduism, Zoroastrianism and Mormonism, in Islam and various mystical faiths. In every case, angels announce that the divine is about to break into earthly life. They proclaim God’s intentions to human beings. In various scriptures, an angel in the story is a way of the writer saying, “Hey, pay attention! God is at work Rev. Yme here!” According to a study Woensdregt by Baylor University, half of all Americans say they believe in angels, saying that they are protected by guardian angels. But what of the other half? Does all this talk of angel choruses and supernatural heralds at Christmastide make Jesus seem more a character from a fairy tale than a human being like us who lived with us? To put the question more bluntly, are there still any angels around? Are there any messengers who announce God’s intentions for the world? If you’re looking for rosy–cheeked cherubs with wings, I’m afraid you’ll be sorely disappointed. These kinds of messengers come in all kinds of different shapes and guises. And that’s exactly how angels have shown up in my life from time to time. Each time an angel confronted me, it was a rare and unexpected thing. I typically don’t see supernatural beings floating around in the sky bearing banners that read “Gloria” and singing “Hark.”

I’m learning to pay attention to all of these messengers God is sending my way: the words of my family and friends, the nudges of my soul, the work of peace and justice in the world, the questions of those who seek to delve more deeply into things, in pieces of music and works of art. For me, the greatest angels I experience are the human beings who populate my everyday world, those who bear the message of Immanuel, “God with us,” in all that we do. Some people may call them personal heroes. I have some of those too, but some of my heroes go beyond just an example for me to imitate. Some of them bear a word of good news and healing for my life. Let me give you an example. Malala Yousafzai, the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In her strong and tireless advocacy of human rights, she speaks a word to our world that every single person is a child of God. After she had been shot, she could have given up. She didn’t. She used her experience to become an angel, a messenger, speaking words of hope and life into our world. May you also experience the presence of angels in your life, this season and throughout the year. May you feel them nudging in your life, in the midst of your ordinary schedules, in ordinary and extraordinary days all year long. And … when you do feel the nudging, listen for the whispers. Your life might just take a turn towards newness and abundance. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook

Opinion/Events 2015: the year of climate adaptation

It’s time to look beyond the protests and political battles around climate change that dominated 2014, and look at the year and the decade ahead. From the California drought to shifting forest patterns across B.C., there is evidence that our climate is changing more rapidly. Public debate consists mainly of squabbling about the significance of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, rather than what can be done to prepare. A draft discussion paper from the B.C. forests ministry on wildfire control was released in December after an access to information request. “Climate Change Adaptation and Action Plan For Wildfire Management, 2014-2024” describes the progress made in the province’s community forest fire prevention plan, and its goal to create “wildfire resilient ecosystems and wildfire adapted communities” over the next 10 years. The final discussion paper is to be released early in 2015, but the key research is in. It estimates that by 2017 there will be 788 million cubic metres of dead pine in B.C. forests. Fires in these areas spread 2.6 times faster than in healthy green stands, up to 66 metres per minute. The report calls for fuel management beyond community boundaries to stop

“mega-fires” by creating landscape-level fuel breaks, with targeted harvesting, prescribed burning and new silviculture practices. It notes that bark beetle infestations and bigger, hotter fires are being seen across North America, with costs rising along with urban development. For example, the 2011 Slave Lake fire in northBC Views ern Alberta generated the second largest insurance Tom charge in Canadian history. Fletcher The costs of preparing are huge. The costs of not preparing could be catastrophic. Also in 2014, the B.C. government appointed an advisory committee to prepare for the renewal of the Columbia River Treaty with the United States. While this 1964 the treaty has no end date, its flood control mandate expires in 2024. I spoke with Deborah Harford and Jon O’Riordan, members of the Simon Fraser University Adaptation to Climate Change Team (ACT), who, along with ACT senior policy author Robert Sandford, have written a provocative book on the treaty. They hope it will help lead to a renewed agreement that will be a model for a changing world. “If you’re looking ahead 60 years from 2024, there’s a lot of climate change projected in that period, for British Columbia and the U.S.,” Harford said. “For the B.C. side,

we’re looking at heavy precipitation and potential increase in snowmelt runoff, while in the States, you’re getting the opposite, much less snow. “There will probably be no snowpack left down there, and they’re looking at the prospect of quite drastically lower flows in the summer.” The treaty, sparked by devastating floods in 1948, led to construction of three dams on the B.C. side and one at Libby, Washington that backed up Koocanusa Lake into B.C. Between that reservoir and the Arrow Lakes, 110,000 hectares of B.C. land was flooded, including orchards, dairy farms and the homes of 2,000 people. Those dams hold back spring flood water and provide for irrigation that has allowed Washington to expand its agriculture to a $5 billion-a-year industry. The treaty shares the value of hydroelectric power generated by the many downstream U.S. dams such as the Grand Coulee, but it pays B.C. nothing for agricultural benefits that were achieved at the cost of B.C. farms and aboriginal territories. O’Riordan notes that climate shifts create a strategic benefit for B.C. The U.S. has no more dam capacity to exploit, and needs us more than ever, for flood protection and water supply. Total turnaround in Cranbrook

Kootenay Ice headed in right direction as one of WHL’s hottest teams at holiday break Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The holiday season provides time for reflection -- a chance to look back upon failures and accomplishments. The Kootenay Ice are in the midst of a 10-day holiday break, leaving plenty of time to reflect upon the first half of the 201415 WHL campaign.

----------

With 35 games in the books and 37 still to go, the Kootenay Ice (18-170-0) are right in the thick of the WHL’s Eastern Conference playoff hunt, holding down the conference’s second wildcard slot. “It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s certainly not the be-all, end-all,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill Dec. 16. “We’ve come a long way.” After struggling to a 3-13-0-0 record from Sept. 19 through Oct. 31, things couldn’t get much worse for McGill and his troops. One bright spot for the team during the dark days early on came when the Montreal Canadiens saw fit to return 20-yearold French forward Tim Bozon to the Ice. The Habs assigned the native of Valbonne, France, to the Ice on Oct. 10, though the veteran goal-scorer wouldn’t make a true impact until November as he battled a lower-body injury. Less than a month after Bozon was returned, captain Sam Reinhart rejoined the Ice following a nine-game stint with the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres. “When Sam [Reinhart] and Bozon came back, it just put everybody right into a role that they could handle,” McGill said. “Not only the ice time, but their role as far as five-on-five play goes; power play; penalty kill -- it just put everybody in the right spot.” Combine Reinhart’s return with the revitalized health of both Bozon and defenceman Rinat Valiev, and the makings for a turnaround were pulsating

through Western Financial Place and the Kootenay Ice dressing room. Since Nov. 1, the Ice are 15-4-0-0 and have collected 30 points in the standings. The Kelowna Rockets (15-4-3-0, 33 points) are the only WHL team to have collected more points than the Ice since Nov. 1, leaving McGill’s squad as the hottest team in the league’s tight Eastern Conference since Halloween came to pass. “We’re just controlling the puck,” said Ice goaltender Wyatt Hoflin of the team’s turnaround. “For the most part, we’re sticking to the game plan. We’re wearing teams down [and] getting greasy goals. “Our power play has been good for us and the defense has come a long way. As a unit, from the goalie out, we’re still trying to get better, but it’s definitely come a long way for us.” Having made up ground on Central Division rivals Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton, the Ice will face a critical stretch of hockey upon returning from the holiday break as they play six consecutive games against Central Division opponents.

Up front

With production of at least a point-per-game from forwards Jaedon Descheneau (18-23-41 in 33 games), Luke Philp (13-22-35 in 34 games), Bozon (13-14-27 in 20 games) and Reinhart (819-27 in 15 games), the Ice offense came alive after a sluggish start. The team was scoring at a paltry rate of two goals-per-game in 16 contests prior to Nov. 1. Since then, the Ice have more than doubled scoring output with 4.05 goals per game in 19 outings. For comparison’s sake, the Brandon Wheat Kings -- the WHL’s top-scoring team with 160 goals heading into the break -- are scoring at a rate of 4.57 goalsper-game this season. Apart from getting top-end production, McGill is also seeing scoring support from

role players like Levi Cable (8-5-13 since Nov. 1), Zak Zborosky (6-7-13 since Nov. 1) and Matt Alfaro (3-8-11 since Nov. 1). “So far, they’ve been great,” McGill said. “Our character has been excellent since [Reinhart]’s gone. We’ve had contributions from everybody throughout the lineup and that needs to continue.”

A 360-degree turnaround doesn’t happen without improvement at both ends of the rink. In addition to more than doubling offensive output, the Ice have cutback on activity in their own end of the rink. After allowing a crippling 4.44 goals per game through Oct. 31, the Ice slashed the goalsagainst rate by nearly a goal and half after Nov. 1. In 19 tests since the calendar flipped past October, the Ice have allowed 3.05 goals per game. Import defenceman Rinat Valiev certainly helped in that area upon returning from injury Oct. 24. The native of Nizhnekamsk, Russia, battled a knee injury after attending Toronto Maple Leafs training camp in September, but has since steadied the team’s transition game while also providing a heavy blast from the point on the power play. Valiev hasn’t been the only standout for McGill, as defenceman Tyler King has been playing some of the best hockey of his WHL career in recent weeks. “We never gave up hope,” King said Dec. 16. “We got Sam [Reinhart] and Bozon back, which are huge additions to our lineup. After that, we kind of got things rolling. “We can be as good as we want and we can take it as far as we want.” The 19-year-old native of Pilot Butte, Sask., is on pace to set career highs in goals, assists and points, (4-11-15 through 31 games) and has been steady in keeping opponents in check.

There’s been a 360-degree turnaround at Western Financial Place as the Kootenay Ice are 15-4-0-0 since Nov. 1. The Ice began the season 3-13-0-0, but now find themselves holding down the second and final wildcard spot in the WHL’s competitive Eastern Conference.Above: Teddy bears and bags rain down at Western Financial Place Friday, Dec. 5 after Jaedon Descheneau (#14, middle) scored the opening goal of the A&W Teddy Bear Toss game.

Turnaround is on for Kootenay Ice Continued from page 8 With Valiev out east with Team Russia at the World Junior Championship and Dylan Overdyk still battling concussion issues, the blue line is in need of reinforcements. Tanner Faith is still nursing an upper-body injury, but his expected return to action was tentatively slated for Dec. 27 prior to the holiday break. Even with the return of Faith, the banged-up blue line could benefit from some support.

started 23 consecutive games for McGill and the Ice at the holiday break. “It definitely feels really good [to be the go-to guy],” Hoflin said Dec. 16. “It’s a change for me and I’m adapting pretty well. There’s been some games where I’d like to have been a little bit better. “I’ve handled it good so far. I just need make sure I continue it in the second half of the season. The native of Spruce Grove, Alta., is set to break the Kootenay Ice franchise record for consecutive appearances by a goaltender (25), which is held by Todd Mathews (2009). Hoflin leads the WHL in two major goaltending categories at the holiday break, including shots faced (1,014) and minutes played (1,868), while sitting second in

Only one name matters in the Kootenay Ice crease as of the holiday break and that name is Wyatt Hoflin. Keelan Williams is the forgotten netminder, though to no fault of his own. Dating all the way back to Oct. 24, the 19-year-old Hoflin has

What’s next?

The Kootenay Ice return to action Saturday, Dec. 27 when they host the Calgary Hitmen (1912-1-2) at Western Financial Place. “We can’t come out slow,” said defenceman Tyler King Dec. 16, looking forward to his team’s next stretch of hockey. “We’ve got to take it one game at a time and do what we can. “We know we’re going to be on the road and there’s going to be good atmospheres out there. We’ve got to win some of those games.” After Saturday’s home game against the Hitmen, the Ice visit Calgary for a rematch the following day. From

there, they continue on the road to Medicine Hat (Dec. 30) before returning to Red Deer (Jan. 2) and Edmonton (Jan. 3). If six straight games against difficult Central Division opponents doesn’t pose a tall enough task, playing four of those six games on the road will surely prove a test of the team’s character. “The second half is always tougher,” Bozon said Dec. 16. “We’re still in that Taylor Rocca Photo playoff spot, but we’re The Kootenay Ice are doing it on and off the ice heading into the holiday break. coming up close to Above, L to R: Tyler King, Levi Cable and Keelan Williams join the A&W Root fifth or sixth place and Bear in visiting patients at East Kootenay Regional Hospital, distributing teddy that’s what we want.” bears and spreading holiday cheer Dec. 11. A provincial court judge has ruled that charges can move forward in the Lemon Creek jet fuel spill incident.

Court approves charges in 30,000 litre Slocan Valley jet fuel spill C anadian Press

NELSON, B.C. — The British Columbia government and a fuel-service company are facing allegations under the Fisheries Act in a rare prosecution launched by a member of the public. A provincial court judge approved the charges filed by Marilyn Burgoon, a Kootenay, B.C., resident, over a massive jet fuel spill in July 2013 that caused environmental devastation when a truck spilled its load into a creek in the province’s southeast. Judge Mayland McKimm ruled there was enough evidence to lay charges against both the province and Executive Flight Centre Fuel Services Ltd., after 30,000 litres of jet fuel was discharged into a fish-bearing creek. It means a summons will be issued for both parties and a court hearing will be set. The charge under the Fisheries Act says in an offence to deposits a deleterious substance in water frequented by fish. None of the allegations have been proven in court. Burgoon, whose legal effort was supported by West Coast Environmental’s dispute resolution fund, said getting the charges laid was important for democracy and the fish and habitat in the Slocan Valley. “This provincial court decision means that government and industry are still accountable for their actions in a court of law. Even when government and industry drag their feet to avoid investigation of environmental offences, justice can still prevail,” Burgoon said in a statement. Executive Flight Centre Fuel Services Ltd. was hired by the province to deliver fuel to fire-fighting helicopters in the Slocan Valley. Its truck overturned on a service road, spilling the fuel directly into Lemon Creek. During a hearing in Nelson, B.C., on Nov. 27, the court heard that the

day before the accident a different fuel truck was given the wrong directions and also went up the Lemon Creek forest service road in an attempt to find the helicopter staging area. The court heard that the driver was able to get his truck out of the area and he told others when he arrived at the staging area that he was given incorrect directions. Burgoon alleged that the province was responsible for signage and directing traffic to the staging area. “The allegation is that the signage was incorrect and that error was compounded by a failure to correct the signage prior to the accident on July 26,” McKimm’s ruling said. “Essentially it’s alleged the province knew or ought to have known that tanker trucks containing enormous quantities of jet fuel were being misdirected.” A spokesman with the B.C. Environment Ministry said it would be inappropriate to offer comment while the case is before the courts. Wayne Smook, the chief operating officer of the Calgary-based Executive Flight Centre, would not comment on the allegations before the court, but said the cleanup of the area is progressing. He said the latest tests on water showed no contamination. “Obviously the remediation that we did worked very well,” he said. Smook said they’re still doing testing on fish populations and micro organisms in the creek and hope to have final test results in by early next year. “We obviously apologize for the spill, it was a situation where we responded to one event when we created another.” The spill prompted a brief evacuation alert for nearby residents and a weeks-long do-not-use water order for residents along Lemon Creek and the Slocan River.

Manning sorry for not encouraging consultation Canadian Press

EDMONTON - The former leader of the Reform Party says he made a mistake when he gave advice to members of Alberta’s Wildrose on uniting with the governing Progressive Conservatives. Preston Manning met last week with the Wildrose caucus to talk about his attempts to join the Reform Party with the federal Progressive Conservatives under the Canadian Al-

liance banner. A day after the meeting, Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith and eight others crossed the floor of the provincial legislature and called on the party to merge with the Tories. The move angered many party members and executives vowed to keep the Wildrose going. Manning said Monday that he should have recommended more consultation with constituents in the meeting

similar process to the Wildrose caucus was a mistake on my part. It was a disservice to those who sought my counsel and to those who have placed their trust in my commitment to democracy - a mistake for which I now sincerely apologize to all concerned.” Manning told reporters after the Wildrose crossover that keeping a new party alive is difficult. He cited how the Re-

Woman drops lawsuit alleging sex abuse by former Olympic CEO Canadian Press

BURNS LAKE, B.C. A woman who filed a lawsuit alleging former Olympic CEO John Furlong sexually abused her while he was a teacher in Burns Lake, B.C., has dropped the court action. Beverly Abraham’s lawsuit against Furlong was dismissed in B.C. Supreme Court on Friday with no costs to either party, after she asked the court to allow her to withdraw the suit.

Abraham says three of her family members have died recently, and she couldn’t handle the stress of the lawsuit on top of her grief. She says she decided that pulling the lawsuit was the best option for her to move on with her life after consulting with hereditary chiefs from her First Nation. A statement from Furlong’s lawyer says he has always maintained the allegations from Abraham and two other accusers are false,

and an RCMP investigation has also concluded Abraham’s allegations are not supported. The allegations against Furlong surfaced in a 2012 newspaper article written by freelance journalist Laura Robinson that claimed he abused students while teaching in northern B.C. in the late 1960s and 1970s. Furlong is suing the reporter for libel, while Robinson is suing Furlong for defamation.

Magnotta, guilty of first-degree murder, sentenced to life C anadian Press

MONTREAL - Luka Rocco Magnotta has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the killing and dismemberment of Jun Lin in May 2012. Magnotta was found guilty today of first-degree murder and four other charges: criminally harassing Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other members of Parliament; mailing obscene and indecent material; committing an indignity to a body; and publishing obscene materials.

On the four non-murder charges, Magnotta was given the maximum sentences allowed under the Criminal Code, ranging from two to 10 years. The Crown had sought the maximum, while the defence left it to the judge’s discretion. Magnotta did not testify at the trial and had nothing to say as Quebec Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer prepared to sentence him. The verdicts came down on the eighth day of jury deliberations at the Montreal court-

house. Magnotta was charged with first-degree murder in Lin’s death but Cournoyer gave jurors the option of finding him guilty of second-degree murder or manslaughter. The accused admitted to the killing but pleaded not guilty to all the charges. His lawyer urged the jury to find Magnotta not criminally responsible after arguing he is schizophrenic and didn’t know what he was doing when he killed Lin.

Cure post-holiday stress with

nutrition

When the holiday lights come down and the ornaments are packed away, it’s time for a deep breath. Seasonal stress, however, isn’t so easily dispensed with. Anxiety disorders are more likely to peak during the winter months. There are practical causes, like the financial hangover, the treacherous weather, or juggling work when colds and flu strike. But winter stress has biological roots as well. We’ve long known that lack of sunlight affects mood. Our happy hormone, serotonin, declines in the darker months. For some, this means melancholy. For others, low-serotonin triggers tension, reactivity and frayed nerves.

Feeling out of sorts can become a vicious cycle. When we’re stressed, our vices have a firmer grip. We eat junk,

drink too much coffee and alcohol, draining our bodies of the very nutrients we need to battle stress.

Magnesium is one anti-stress nutrient that’s easily depleted. Sugar, caffeine and especially alcohol drain our magnesium stores - and that is bad news for those under stress. Magnesium regulates nerves, relaxes muscles and activates serotonin. It also downgrades our physical symptoms of stress - the ‘fight-or-flight’ response we experience under pressure - and lets us get a good night’s sleep, essential for coping with stress. Canadian actor Sitara Hewitt speaks openly about her battle with anxiety, and she lists magnesium as one of the tools in her arsenal. “I was juggling my career demands with being a new mom,” says Sitara. “I really noticed that my anxiety peaked in the darker months. When I started to take magnesium on the advice of my naturopath there was a real difference. My mood levelled out and I felt more resilient.” Sitara is now a natural health advocate and the Canadian spokesperson for her favourite magnesium brand, Natural Calm.

• Add a splash of colour. A great way to beat the winter blues is to infuse your home with a bit of colour. Add décor items such as vibrant throw pillows or consider painting a modern accent wall. with the popularity of single serve brewers, it’s easy and convenient to try a wide variety of beverages at the touch of a button. You can even enjoy restaurant favourites at home, like the new sweet and creamy single serve French Vanilla Cappuccino from Tim Hortons, or their premium quality, Single Serve Steeped Tea. • Bring experiences to you. It can be easy to enjoy almost any activity in the comfort of your own home. Consider hosting an indoor picnic, having an overnight camp-out in the basement, planning a themed movie night, or creating the ultimate at-home spa experience. • Think outside the box. Traditions of Three Kings Day

Christmas celebrants realize that the holiday season does not end on December 26 or even January 2. For many people, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are merely a prelude to the real celebration to come on Three Kings Day. Three Kings Day, or Día de los Très Reyes, is celebrated on January 6 to honor the wise men who visited and brought gifts to Jesus Christ. Also known as the Epiphany, the holiday marks the end of the Christmas season for many practicing Christians. Very little is known about the kings, or magi. These kings, who are only mentioned once in the Gospel of Matthew, are never named. The story says they hail from the “east” and are guided to the manger by a mysterious light in the sky. They begin a journey to bring gold, frankincense and myrrh to the newborn king. Unbeknownst to many, the popular song “The 12 Days of Christmas” actually marks the 12 days following Christmas, ending on the Feast of the Epiphany, and not

the 12 days preceding Christmas Day. Many traditions are associated with the Epipha-

ny. Celebrants in Mexico serve Rosca de Reyes, an oval-shaped cake that symbolizes a crown. The cake has a small doll inside that represents baby Jesus and the hiding of Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Herod ordered his soldiers to seek out and murder all male infants born in Bethlehem in retaliation of the prophe-

cy that a messiah would come and become the new King of Jerusalem. Roscas can be made with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the jewels that adorn real crowns. Whoever receives the plastic doll in his or her slice of cake is expected to throw a party on Diá de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day), which occurs each

year on February 2.

Unlike in the United States, where gifts are typically exchanged on Christmas Day, much of the Latin community exchange gifts on the eve of January 6. Puerto Rican children have been known

to gather grass or straw in shoeboxes for the kings’ horses or camels. Some families display carvings and artwork of the three magi atop camels. Many celebrants participate in Three Kings Day parades and festivals.

Family gatherings and parties that would rival other special holidays are common as well. A special meal consisting of corn tamales and hot chocolate may be served, while others may enjoy black beans, picadillo and yucca.

Christmas Tidbits

to put you in the holiday spirit

The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season.

We wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and very prosperous New Year and look forward to serving you in 2015 and beyond.

Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the staff of the City of Cranbrook, Mayor and Council wish you and yours the very best of the holiday season.

s where the heart is. i e m o H

Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone.

In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn’t born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible.

Christmas carols began as an English custom called “wassailing.” Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life.

Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there’s no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older.

Santa Claus’ modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents.

Santa has his own official postal code. It’s H0 H0 H0.

The song “Jingle Bells” was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas.

Christmas trees typically grow for 15 years before they’re cut and sold. This means the trees sold today were likely planted in 1999.Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870.

Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig’s head and mustard.

Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa’s reindeer are likely female.

Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what “mistletoe” means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means “dung on a twig,” for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants.

Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas.” The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

The many ways to recycle Christmas greeting cards The Greeting Card Association says Americans purchase some 6.5 billion greeting cards every year. Of those, around 1.6 billion are Christmas cards. Exchanging cards is a great way for people to show their loved ones that they’re thinking about them, and such cards make for festive ornaments to display around homes. But when the holiday season ends, recycling those cards into other items can make good use of the paper resources and turn what’s normally a single-use item into an enduring trinket. • Turn this year’s cards into next year’s gift tags. Cut out circles, rectangles or any shape you desire. Otherwise, visit the scrapbooking aisle of your favorite craft store and purchase a paper punch to make easy work of cutting those shapes. • Transform a greeting card into a mini puzzle for a youngster. • Glue silly characters from Christmas cards onto a sheet of magnet. Then use

these magnets for decorations next year. • Frame favorite cards so their messages can endure year after year. • Turn a beautiful card into a keepsake. Use a decoupage medium to attach a card to a ceramic or wood backing. Coat with a polyurethane top coat to protect it. • Use greeting cards to make wine charms for holiday entertaining. Guests can keep track of their glasses with ease. • Use cut-outs of cards to improve the appearance

of plain gift wrap or bags. • Insert cut rounds of greeting cards into the inside of can lids to create crafty ornaments. • Make a paper Christmas tree from cutouts on greeting cards. • Encourage kids to make a photo collage from the cards they like. Mount their efforts on poster board and save for next year. • Donate used cards. St. Jude’s Ranch recycles greeting cards by reselling them to help fund programs.

But before we do, we want to take this opportunity to thank all our good friends both old and new. In many ways, secular celebrations garner more attention than religious gatherings during the holiday season. But all it takes is a little digging to find religious services to fill our calendars come the month of December.

Midnight Mass Many Christian churches commemorate Jesus Christ’s birth with a special midnight Mass on December 24th. Some Christians wait until the clock strikes midnight to place baby Jesus figurines into their Nativity scenes a t home. Midnight Mass may bring entire communities together to share the holiday season message of joy and peace. Midnight Mass also may feature awe-inspiring performances by church choirs or private performers who lend their talents to the festivities.

Living Nativity Area houses of worship and community centers may produce their own Living Nativity performances. Costumed volunteers and actors present the story of Christ’s birth and the good news that followed. This can be an especially exciting experience for children and may also be a creative way to reinforce religious beliefs, especially to children who may have difficulty otherwise relating to written text.

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season

From the students and employees of College of the Rockies

Christmas pageants In some areas, children play integral roles in recreating the story of Christmas. Private Catholic schools may offer performances of Christmas pageants that explain the Nativity and other events leading up to the birth of Christ. Parents and extended members of the family can enjoy a religious experience while also sharing praise for their youngest performers.

Volunteer efforts Houses of worship may organize clothing drives, holiday meals, toy donation collections, and many other community events this time of year. Volunteer to lend a hand at such events, which can help to remind you that the holiday season is one of giving.

Community candle lighting Jewish celebrants may participate in a community-sponsored hanukkiyah (Chanukah menorah) lighting ceremony. Although candles or oil is traditionally burned for Chanukah, many public places use an electric system for safety and convenience. The lighting has a schedule based on tradition and ritual. A Chanukah candle lighting service can bring the religious experience alive for many involved.

Caroling

www.cotr.bc.ca

Christmas caroling, which likely evolved from the British tradition of wassailing, has largely fallen out of favor. However, many close-knit towns and communities still include caroling among their traditions. Caroling can be a great way to spread holiday share cheer. Although carols are often a blend of religious and secular tunes, many people find their faith is revitalized by joining their friends and neighbors to carol during the holiday season.

We know it gives us a lift to serve you! Many thanks for your loyal support. See you in the new year. From all your friends at...

Creative ways to celebrate Chanukah Many jokes have been shared about the complexity of growing up Jewish surrounded by Christian friends and the overwhelming influence of Christmas come the month of December. Seemingly everywhere you look buildings, stores and homes are decked out in lights and decorations. But Christmas celebrants are not the only ones with reason to be festive this time of year, when Chanukah is also cause for celebration. Perhaps due to its proximity to Thanksgiving and Christmas, Chanukah tends to be the most widely celebrated Jewish holiday in America. Even though it is officially listed as a minor holiday, Chanukah is important to families across the globe. In fact, because the basis of Chanukah is rededication to the faith, it very well may be an instrumental celebration for families who may need to find their way back to the roots of their beliefs. Chanukah celebrations may not feature lavishly decorated trees or scores of celebrants belting out carols, but it bears significance for the thousands of people who celebrate each year. While Chanukah is steeped in tradition, the following are a handful of ways you can add a creative spin to your family’s festivities this year.

component of Chanukah celebrations, but it wasn’t always. Greater importance was once placed on the lighting of candles to publicize the miracle and evangelize the faith. Some poor people could not afford candles, and these people would go doorto-door for candle funds,

The word Chanukah can be divided into two: Chanu, meaning “they rested,” and Kah, which is the numerical value of 25. Light: One of the major tenets of Chanukah is how light can shine and lead a person through dark periods. This is typically exemplified by the lighting of the menorah, which is prominently placed in windows or other visible areas of celebrants’ homes. This Chanukah spend time with someone who may be dealing with an illness or the loss of a loved one. You may be the light that inspires this person each day. Give candles to friends and family members to symbolize the light that will shine in the future. Oil: Another component of Chanukah celebrations is the focus on how a one-day supply of oil somehow lasted eight days during the rededication of the temple’s menorah. Many ways to include oil in celebrations exist. Some people like to get creative in the kitchen, serving fried foods and desserts. Think about giving gifts of oil, such as fragrant essential oils that can be used in potpourri or in the bath or shower. Working alongside their parents, children can see how a wick drenched in oil can serve as an efficient lighting source and decorate the home with these homemade oil lamps.

or “gelt,” to be able to purchase candles and kiddush wine. Some Jewish families prefer to give money rather than gifts on Chanukah to keep with the tradition of Chanukah gelt. However, families also can incorporate charitable giving in their celebrations as a way to reinforce the customs of giving to the poor.

HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You will act in a most unexpected way with a friend. You might not be totally cognizant of your behavior. Pressure seems to build between you and someone else. You could find this person to be too clingy and controlling, at least verbally. Tonight: Where you want to be. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Others will be waiting for you to take the lead. You could be so busy handling last-minute details that you might not even be aware of their eyes on you. Someone older could be very temperamental, and you will need to deal with him or her. Tonight: A must appearance. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Your mind seems to drift to distant places and people. A conflict could occur around travel and/or with someone at a distance. Relax and know that it will work out given some time and space. Tonight: Help others get into the holiday spirit.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Reach out to a loved one. This person loves your attention, even if you are not aware of it. In any case, this moment is not the right time to pull away. Make a point of swapping gifts in a quiet moment. Tonight: Light the tree, and enjoy this once-a-year happening. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Others seem only too happy to please. No matter what you do, you’ll feel valued and as if you can do no wrong. Don’t forget to say thank you! Someone you care about deeply suddenly could become irate; you’ll need to find out why. Tonight: Go along with plans. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might be overworked and tired. What a time to get cranky! Try to take a nap -- not only for you, but also for others. Otherwise, you will be a terror to deal with. A conversation with a loved one could be difficult. Tonight: Enjoy every last minute of tonight. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your imagination seems to find

Tundra

a solution for every last-minute hassle you have to deal with. A partner or loved one could act in a most unexpected way. You might be surprised, though by now, you might be used to this person’s unusual behavior. Tonight: Let the fun begin! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Make your focus your family and those around you. You might want to take your time with the last-minute details. Unfortunately, you won’t have that luxury. Maintain a sense of humor. Tonight: Invite a friend and/or neighbor over for some eggnog. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might be taking a situation a little too seriously. Lighten up, and know this, too, will pass. Your sense of humor will kick in and help you gain perspective with this matter. Try to keep your focus when running around. Tonight: Enjoy your out-of-town company. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’ll get past a problem with ease. Be careful with spending and last-minute details; other-

wise, you might have regrets. Retreat into your usually astute self, and don’t feel pressured. Be aware of a possessive streak between you and someone else. Tonight: Make it easy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You might be taken aback by the general spontaneity and unpredictability of others. Your instincts regarding a particular interaction could push you to initiate a conversation. Do not make someone feel as if you are trying to control him or her. Tonight: Beam in what you want. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might want some time away from the holiday celebrations. Know that you will have it soon enough. Curb a tendency to go overboard when expressing your feelings. A friend could do a sudden reversal and surprise you. Go with the flow. Tonight: Make it a low-key evening. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I am a concerned uncle at an impasse. I have a young adult nephew who seems perfectly content not to go anywhere in life. “Peter” wasn’t the smartest kid in school, but he managed to graduate. He now moves from job to job, never keeping one for more than six months. He seems perfectly fine with living at home and visiting my elderly father in senior housing. When I talk to Peter about his behavior, he pays no attention. He only wants to hang around and play video games and see friends who don’t help. He doesn’t think very highly of himself, though I tell him he is capable of being anything he wants. He seems to be immature for his age and still in the self-gratification stage. He has no interest in becoming an adult, earning a paycheck and moving out. I worry he sometimes takes advantage of my dad, who is reluctant to see Peter’s faults. The kid really needs a hard dose of reality, but I can’t get through to him. I don’t want him to be like this and live in his mother’s house for the rest of his life or, worse, end up in trouble and be a burden on society. Is there any way to enlighten him? -- Run Out of Ideas Dear Run Out: You sound like a caring uncle, but Peter has to want this for himself, and he’s not there yet. It also doesn’t help when others around him enable his freeloading, irresponsible behavior. This includes his parents, who should be the first in line to handle this. We recommend you stop trying to “enlighten” Peter and simply be a good role model for him. Demonstrate adult male behavior and the respect it engenders. Be someone he can turn to for help, and not another person in his life who is chastising him for coming up short. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Indy,” the 62-year-old woman who was forced to retire, and who is lonely and struggles to make ends meet. I, too, am from Indiana, and I thought, “You don’t have to feel that way!” As you suggested, getting involved is the answer. I am a 61-year-old former schoolteacher, and my husband travels a lot. I was getting into the same rut, and it’s not a nice place to be. I thought about the things I really like doing. I was an art teacher, and I love to sew. So last winter, I formed a group of neighborhood women who would come to my house once a week to sew items for our children’s hospitals. It was a huge success and a lot of fun, and it made my home a happy place. I also worked at a large fabric store that offers several rooms for local use, so I moved our little group to the store and opened it up to the entire community. We tell people to just come and sew with us -- everything is provided. If you don’t sew, we can show you how, or you can do other things, like iron seams, pin pieces together or cut out patterns. We are currently working on Christmas pillowcases for the children’s hospitals. We also make hero capes for the kids, and with the scraps, we make fun scrub hats for the doctors and nurses. We also make lap quilts and dining cover-ups for nursing homes, as well as little knit caps for newborns. There is so much to do that we run out of time, but what a great time it is. It breaks my heart to think of someone feeling the way I used to. We would love “Indy” to join us, not only to do something purposeful, but to connect with others. -- Carmel, Ind. Dear Carmel: What a lovely community project! We hope others (men, as well as women) will look into these opportunities as a way of feeling good while doing good. After all, ‘tis the season. Ray Hull was born and raised in Rolla, BC. For most of his life, Ray worked in trucking and pipelining, eventually moving into very senior purchasing positions in the oil & gas industry, building refineries and petrochemical plants. He worked at Alberta Natural Gas in Cranbrook during the 1960s. He moved to Oliver in 1991 with his wife when they retired. Ray loved his family. Work took them all across BC and Alberta. When they were able to settle down for a few years at a time, he was happy to be home with wife, Beryl and their growing family of 4. When his children were little he liked to sit them on his knee and read softly to them. He, himself was renowned as a natural born storyteller and writer. As he grew older he spent many long hours writing and researching for his short stories. The extended family and friends loved to receive them! Ray could quote poetry, too – some of the classics. Later in life, he loved to listen to audiobooks. He played guitar and piano. The family moved to Cranbrook in the early 1960’s for 4½ years. While here, Ray was actively involved in organizing the Cranbrook branch of the Legion. He was one of the original members of the Cranbrook Rod & Gun Club. Ray was an avid hunter and could tell great stories of adventures in the back woods. Hunting season fed the family and brought him great friendships. He loved to explore and new every nook and cranny - every back road wherever he lived or travelled. The Cranbrook years were wonderful. His kids remember he made a skating rink in the back yard for them each winter. He took the family ice-fishing, boating, swimming and camping and taught them to love the outdoors. In Cranbrook, Ray was also an auxiliary RCMP officer. Over all of these years, he kept contact with a couple of dear, dear friends here Colin Anderson and Ken McLean and his cousin, Ray Osborne. Raymond Stanley Hull has passed at 86 years of age. He is predeceased by his wife, Beryl Marguerite (Loeppky) Hull, son, David Clayton Hull. He is survived by daughters Linda Hull Thoms; Susan Hull Shendaruk and, Melodie Hull (in Cranbrook). He leaves 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A big man, a big personality; a great person to know. Saddle up and ride, Ray. You are going home. At his request, after a service, Ray‘s ashes were scattered at the Oliver Cemetery where he joined his wife and son. He will be sorely missed by all that love him. In lieu of flowers, Ray asks that a contribution be made to the Melodie Hull Mental Health & Addictions Endowment Fund a registered charity with the Cranbrook Community Foundation www.cranbrookcf.ca Box 242, Cranbrook, BC, Canada, V1C 4H8.

hen Lilly Singh arrived on the set of the Kunal Nayyar movie “Dr. Cabbie” earlier this year, she faced a bit of a learning curve. The 26-year-old already had millions of fans and was regularly mobbed by teenage girls at the mall. But the Markham, Ont.-based star wasn’t a famous actress or pop singer — she was a YouTuber. “I went on set and I just started acting right away. They were like, ‘No, no, we need to call action,”’ Singh recalled with a laugh during a recent telephone interview. “I’m like, ‘You have to call action? What do you mean? No one calls action for me. I call action!”’ Singh is among a new generation of entertainers who are finding massive success on YouTube. With self-produced, low-budget videos, YouTubers are attracting devoted fan followings, earning steady paycheques and increasingly landing film roles, TV shows and record deals. On her channel IISuperwomanII, Singh posts comedy videos twice a week for her 4.4 million subscribers. She typically shoots them in her parents’ house in Markham, where she lives, and plays multiple characters — male and female — with a goofy, refreshing lack of self-consciousness. With videos like “How Girls Get Ready” and “Types of Kids at School,” Singh has fostered a largely suburban, teenage female audience. She often finds humour in her relationship with her Indian parents, frequently donning a fake beard and thick accent to portray her dad. “I don’t feel the need to be this perfect, very pretty type of person, and I think my fans really relate to that,” said Singh. “A lot of times they tell me, ‘You’re so real, and you make me OK with being myself.”’ Singh said her upbringing in Scarborough, a diverse suburb of Toronto, greatly influenced her comedic style. One of her first videos to go viral was titled “(Stuff) Punjabi Mothers Say,” which has now been viewed more than four million times. “When I first started, inevitably (my fanbase

Megan MacKay Lilly Singh was) majority Indian, because my videos were titled, like, ‘My Indian parents so-and-so.’ Now, I don’t do that anymore because I very quickly realized you don’t have to put Indian in the title because it applies to everyone, for the most part,” she said. “Even if I’m talking about my (South) Asian parents, I can do it in a way that someone who has Jamaican parents, or Chinese parents, they can relate to it as well.” YouTube creates room for alternative voices that aren’t well-represented in mainstream media, said Aubrey Anable, an instructor at the University of Toronto’s Department of Visual Studies who has studied digital culture. “There are a lot of YouTube celebrities that are minorities, or their type of performance or what they are doing on YouTube is not something that can be easily found in mainstream media culture,” she said. She said YouTube stardom is distinct from traditional TV and film fame because of a greater sense of intimacy between creator and fan. Often YouTubers shoot their videos in domestic spaces like bedrooms, directly address their fans and appeal to them to subscribe or leave a comment. “All of these are unique to YouTube and I think it creates this sense of connection between amateur YouTube celebrities and their fans,” she said. Of course, the line between YouTube and the mainstream entertainment industry is becom-

ing increasingly blurred, Anable said. Not only are pop stars and TV networks setting up YouTube channels to promote and share their products, but YouTube stars like Singh are landing roles in feature films. Famously, Justin Bieber was first discovered because of his YouTube videos. More recently, another Ontario teenager, Shawn Mendes, landed a record deal and released a popular single after his videos on the social video app Vine attracted millions of views. The Montreal-based Epic Meal Time crew found Internet fame by posting short videos in which they cooked up and devoured calorie-laden, artery-clogging fare. Led by “Sauce Boss” Harley Morenstein, the group recently launched their own TV show, “Epic Meal Empire,” on specialty network FYI. Despite the fact that the Jack Daniel’s-guzzling foursome isn’t allowed to drink or curse on TV, Morenstein said he preferred the show to the YouTube channel. A bigger budget allows them to create more elaborate concoctions, like a 2.4metre chicken made of chicken tenders and 100 eggs. “They let us do what we want, which is the best part of being on FYI,” he said in an interview earlier this year. “They were the ones that really put the trust in us… Now, the show is exactly what we want. It’s something we’re proud of. It’s hilarious. I think it’s an awesome

show.” While Morenstein and Singh have already skyrocketed to stardom, YouTuber Megan MacKay is just beginning her ascent. The Toronto comedian saw her subscriber count jump from 300 to 30,000 overnight in September when her “Ray Rice Inspired Make-up Tutorial” went viral. MacKay used the conventions of a well-known YouTube genre, the makeup tutorial, to poke fun at the NFL’s handling of domestic abuse allegations against Rice and to make a serious point about violence against women. Later, she used the same format to comment on the Jian Ghomeshi scandal. “I think for me the impulse has always been, ‘I wanna be funny.’ I was that really obnoxious class clown in the back of the room trying to do bits,” she said in a recent interview. “But I think I’ve always been kind of politically minded too and really interested in the news.” A graduate of Toronto’s Second City Conservatory Program, MacKay turned to YouTube as a way to build her portfolio as a comedian and writer. In the process she discovered it was the perfect space to experiment and hone her comedy chops. “The only way I could have ever done this is by making just garbage for so many years. You guys don’t see that because I deleted those videos,” she said. “And you have to get it out, you have to try everything, because that’s the only way you’re going to get to know what works for you.” For those curious about how YouTubers

earn money, MacKay said she is paid through the site’s partner program, which places advertising on and around her video content. With YouTube taking 45 per cent off the top, a million hits makes her about two thousand dollars. “It’s not like, ‘I’m filling a swimming pool with money and I’m going to swim in it for the rest of my life’ money, but it’s the job. It is a job for a lot of people,” she said. Grace Helbig, an American YouTube star who recently published a book, “Grace’s Guide: The Art of Pretending to be a Grown-Up,” said the online video platform suits her introverted nature.

“I feel there’s a common thread in a lot of online content creators. There’s an introvertedness there that I think is just a personal attribute that’s shared among the community,” she said in an interview last month. “I think it’s like a group of introverted control freaks are basically YouTubers. It’s people that like owning what they do and like being the boss of what they do but also enjoy quieter moments alone.” Helbig, 29, warned that aspiring YouTubers shouldn’t expect to make a viral video or get a million subscribers overnight. Instead, she advised hard work, consistency and self-satisfaction.

“The crazy thing is that YouTube careers exist now as a viable future for people, and that was never the case when I was growing up... Now, there’s this whole digital world you can choose to make money in,” she said. “It doesn’t happen overnight. And if it does happen overnight, that to me is scary. This has been kind of a slow build to me in this world. I’ve been doing it for six, going on seven years now. And if I had had one of those overnight success stories, the anxiety that comes along with that would be crippling to me. So I’m really happy that it’s happened the way it has.”

1899 Methodist Church Dedication ... The handsome new Methodist Church in this city was formally dedicated last Sunday morning by Rev. Wood, of Kaslo. The service was well attended and the music prepared for the occasion was a treat. Monday evening the ladies served a fine supper at Miner’s old storeroom, and in the evening gave a concert at the church. The program consisted of music and talks. The musical part of the program was fully appreciated by those present, but when it comes to charging admission for the talks, or whatever they might be called, given by preachers and newspaper men, that is rubbing it in pretty hard on the public, even for a church. A report was read by Mr. Prest, of the board of trustees, showing that the money subscribed and raised in other ways, was sufficient to pay all indebtedness except $125. This showing reflects great credit on the pastor, Rev. Smith. Christmas cheer … Fred Pieper and Archie Currie invited a few friends to their shack one day this week to partake of a Christmas dinner ahead of time. The guests were William Doble, R. E. Beattie, John McDuflf, George Meyers and Matt Rockendorf. Currie is a celebrated chef, although he does not follow the culinary line as a business, arid he is not a sourdough cook by any means. Pieper officiated as master of ceremonies, and between the two they gave an entertainment fit for the gods. Their menu was artistic and served in courses, and the appreciation displayed by the guests was of so marked a degree, that for a time it looked as if Dr. King or Dr. Green would be called in. It is said that Pieper was silent and that Currie did all the talking, but of course those who know them can judge the best. There were oysters served in all styles, a roast turkey that made the mouths of the guests water, cranberry jelly, mashed potatoes white as snow, French peas, plum pudding, mince pie, tea, coffee, cocoa, fruits, with a dash of claret and gold neck here and there as appetizers. Then followed cigars and flow of wit that left pleasing impressions. The dinner was a success, and those present ate so much that it was with difficulty they rose from their chairs, and it will be a long time before they forget the enjoyment of the occasion. Is there a need? … If there is a child in Cranbrook whose parents are too poor to give him a happy Christmas, his name should be known, and his case be given attention. Nothing needed … Cranbrook has four preachers and one editor. There is no excuse now for any resi-

dent not being saved. Population … Two years ago this Christmas, Cranbrook consisted of the old Baker home, the Cranbrook Hotel, a sawmill, and in addition about fifty people and any amount of hope. Today Cranbrook is the acknowledged center of East Kootenay, and is its leading town, with a population of 1,200 people. The value of real estate in Cranbrook … Lots on Baker Street, which were quoted at $300 in 1898, are now held at $1000, and some have been sold at that price. Residence lots have increased in value 50 per cent on Baker Hill and other parts of town. Rents range for dwellings from $10 per month for a two or three-roomed house, to $25 and $30 for a five and six-roomed house. Stores rent from $50 to $80 and offices from $25 to $50. Cranbrook hotels … Cranbrook is peculiarly fortunate in her five hotels and proprietors. The houses are good ones, they are well kept and the managers are men of standing in the community. James Ryan, the veteran hotelkeeper of Cranbrook, is now sole proprietor of the Cranbrook Hotel. Everybody in East Kootenay knows “Uncle Jim,” as he is familiarly called, and a better man never turned the register around to a hungry guest. E. H. Small has purchased the interests of his partner, L. E. Musgrave, in the Cosmopolitan, and will operate the house alone in the future. Mr. Small enjoys a good business and is deservedly popular with the public. The Joyce Brothers have made a success of the Commercial, and are entitled to it, because they have worked early and late to please the public and give value received to their patrons, and are now reaping their reward. L. B. VanDecar & Son, proprietors of the Royal, are doing a good business. Since taking charge they have newly furnished the house throughout, and have a neat and comfortable place. T. T. Richards, the popular proprietor of the East Kootenay, has by his fair treatment of the people, secured a nice business for himself, and his house is always crowded. T. F. Forrest, of the Forrest House, has one of the best constructed hotel buildings in East Kootenay and is now in shape to attend to the needs of the public. Col. Baker at home ... Col. Baker returned last evening from his sojourn in England, and will leave tomorrow for Victoria to be ready for parliament which Convenes on the 4th of January. The colonel was well pleased with the conditions in Cranbrook, and says that a powerful financial syndicate in London is now interested in a smelter proposition for Cranbrook, and will have representatives here as soon as next spring opens, to look over the field. This syndicate has unlimited capital, and is ready to invest the money in propositions of this nature if conditions are favourable.

1903 Killed by train … A lamentable accident occurred on the Canadian Pacific Railway one and a half miles east of Wardner on Tuesday. The victim was a deaf mute named George Hewlin, a young man of 28, who was well known both in Cranbrook and Wardner. He had lately been employed by the Crow’s Nest Pass Lumber Company. The hour of the accident was 10:30 a.m. Hewlin, at the time, was walking along the track towards Wardner from the east; he was about one half mile distant from the town, when passenger train No. 3 appeared behind him. Engineer Drummond, who was at the throttle, sent out a piercing warning, which Hewlin, being, of course, stone deaf, unheeded. The distance between the train and him was very short and there was no time to shut off steam. Rich in Gold ... George Roy of the Poplar Creek district, has been visiting his old friend, Dan McDonald of the Manitoba hotel. He had with him some samples of gold quartz, taken from his property known as the Cascade Group. It is rich in free gold, not a piece but what has particles of gold sticking out all over it. New brewery … The advantage of Cranbrook as a location for a brewery has long been recognized, and upon several occasions the question of organizing a company for the establishment of a brewery has been seriously discussed. Some two weeks ago, C. Band of Kaslo, a practical brewer, came to Cranbrook to look over the field. He was soon convinced that unusual opportunities were presented here, and approached a few of the leading citizens on the matter. As a result a company was quickly formed, and as soon as a few preliminaries have been arranged, work will be inaugurated on the building. The company includes, beside Mr. Band, such well known citizens as James Ryan, of the Cranbrook Hotel; L. B. VanDecar, of the Royal; Brault, of the Canadian and Vic Rollins of the Wentworth. The brewery will have a capacity of 30 barrels a day, and will be equipped with a modern plant. The site has not yet been selected, but it will be north of town on St. Joseph creek.

Hair air … W. B. McFarlane, the barber, has instituted the compressed air treatment in his shop. It is a great innovation, and affords the patrons a pleasing sensation. Raising a home … The people of Cranbrook are gathering a fund to assist Mrs. Thompson to build a home. This is a most worthy work. The poor woman has two children to support, is physically unable for hard work, yet is industrious all of the time. Gifts of this kind will return a thousand fold, or there is nothing in religion, bible, soul or humanity. Mental arithmetic … L. W. H. Rutherfordton, N. C., sent us a request to answer the problem about Ann’s age. Arithmetical puzzles are barred, but we make an exception in this case, for two reasons: First, the extraordinary interest taken in this simple problem all over the country; second, the astonishing lack of the ability to reason correctly, which so many of the answers betray. “Mary is 24 years old. Mary is twice as old as Ann was when Mary was as old as Ann is now. How old is Ann?” It is evident the problem in itself is nothing; but the discussion over it shows the value of mental arithmetic as an available drill for the reasoning powers. The person who cannot find Ann’s age by mental process within a few minutes, without paper or pencil, may well doubt the value of his logical processes, and may well consider whether his conclusions are trustworthy in the vastly more important problems of life, which require the ability to reason correctly. 1904 Change in name ... On January 1st the well-known Fort Steele Mercantile Company, as a company, will pass into oblivion so far as that name is concerned, and in its stead will arise Fink Brothers. There will be no change in the business, there will be no change in the management, there will be no change in the policy of the company - simply a change in the name. Forgotten stomachs … If your stomach is alright, you are unconscious that you have one. That is the kind of digestion you ought to have all the time. If your food distresses you, if it sours or ferments, if you have heartburn, water brash, palpitation of the heart or any other signs of faulty digestion, try a package of our GIBSON’S DYSPEPSIA TABLETS.

The Herald’s New Engine ... The Herald has installed a new gasoline engine. It is a beauty and performs its work in a most satisfactory manner. It is four horse power, takes up little room can be started in one minute’s time and needs little attenWilson’s window… Coming up tion. As a time-saver it is a big im- Baker Street the other evening the provement over the steam engine lights seemed to have gone crazy, for the printing business, and that is why the change is made. First Court In Cranbrook ... Judge Forin held court in Cranbrook one day last week. This is the first judge that has convened court in this town, but he will continue hereafter as Cranbrook is the most convenient place for court sittings.

going from dark to bright and back again, as if the belts on the dynamo had been oiled. Then it turned out to be W. H. Wilson’s electric sign, above the prettiest window display ever seen in Cranbrook. Naturally the flashlight design called attention to the contents of the window. That Dolly in her palace of unmeltable snow and ice, with the coloured lights all around her and the twinkling jewels at her feet must seem a celestial being to many a little maiden. The whole thing has that look about it which makes one say involuntarily, “That’s all right.” Then the idea comes into the mind of Christmas presents — and then Mr. Wilson has to say to your future faring.

This is a bargain Beale & Elwell, Baker Street, Cranbrook,

Bakery change … N. Labarge has sold his bakery to Kummer, Sandberg & Co., who have taken charge. The new company are experienced men in the business, and can make anything in the bakery line from a flap-jack to a wedding cake, and do it in a manner that will win from the most critical words of praise and thankfulness. The new company have a large stock of candies on hand that they are selling at prices that will surprise the children and please the parents.

December school report ... During December there were twelve authorized school days. During this time there attended 194 pupils — 95 boys and 99 girls — a slight falling off from November’s attendance. The average daily attendance was 173.66, and the percentage of attendance for the whole school was 89.61. Last month it was about 85, and it is to be hoped that in January the attendance will break all previous school records in Cranbrook, and pass the 90 mark in percentage. This is no glittering height of fame to achieve. It is accomplished every month of the year in cities where competent truant officers hand out nice little blue papers to parents who forget that one of the first duties of citizenship is to keep their children of school age at school, Vancouver, Victoria , Nelson and many other places have high percentages of school attendance, Let us have a new and better record for the year 1905.
