Volunteers pack 400 hampers BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Room at the Creston and District Community Complex was a flurry

of well organized activity on Dec. 15 as over 130 volunteers spent most of the day sorting food and donations, and then packing 400 Christmas hampers for the Creston Ministerial Association’s annual project,

now running for well over 40 years. “There was a real sense of teamwork,” said ministerial association president Tom Greentree. “It was a fun time.” See HAMPERS, page 4

Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks spoke to Creston town council on Dec. 16 to provide an update on the New Build Canada Fund, the latest federal government infrastructure program. After his presentation, Wilks, council members and town staff had a discussion about the process for application and strategies for a successful application. The town has been working with Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) staff to finalize an application for a $4.3 million project that will include replacement of a major portion of the Arrow Creek water system’s 100-year-old main line. “We have spoken with some of the (federal government) decision makers and been advised about what sort of projects might be looked on most favourably,” said engineering director Colin Farynowski. From page 1 Build Canada projects are funded with equal contributions from the federal, provincial and local governments. Farynowski said the water line project has been engineered and that the local financial portion is already in place. Wilks agreed with the strategy, saying that having the money for a project in hand is important. “We don’t want to approve projects for $10 million and then have to wait while our partners make arrangements to borrow, which can take a considerable amount of time,” he said. The Arrow Creek project application will be made by the RDCK, with help from town staff, leaving Creston still able to apply for its own project. Farynowski outlined one — another water system improvement — and told council it could choose that project or another smaller one, or not apply at all in hope that the chances for the RDCK application approval would be enhanced. Other grant opportunities are on the horizon, council was told, and proposals will be prepared for Federal Gas Tax Fund grants early in 2015, Farynowski said.

Calendar raising funds for seniors program

Atom members to play in Europe BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Three local Atom minor hockey players will be going on the trip of a lifetime this summer after being selected to an elite hockey program that operates out of Calgary. Jake Adams, Dexden Schiffke and Riley Kepke impressed scouts from Top Guns Hockey Development Inc. sufficiently to be included in the Team Canada Cowboys Euro Hockey program. “This is such a great opportunity for these boys,” said Jake’s mom, Terry Adams. “They are already

Joint response to fire Advance Staff

Creston Fire Rescue and the Canyon-Lister and WynndelLakeview fire departments responded to a structure fire in Arrow Creek on Dec. 13, for the first time since the joint fire protection agreement covering Arrow Creek went into effect. Crews were called out around 4:30 p.m. Dec. 13 to a Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road home, which was filled with thick smoke and had flames

planning fundraisers to help pay for their expenses.” Included in being selected to the program is a week-long training camp in Canmore in July, and a 15-day tour of Europe. The team will play eight games in Germany, Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic, and get plenty of exposure to cultural sites, too. Cost for the program is $5,800 per player, and each must be accompanied by a parent, whose expenses will be nearly $5,000 each. “The boys want to do the usual things to raise money, like hot dog sales,” Adams said. “They can hardly wait to get going!” travelling toward the roof’s edge. “The fire had rapidly spread into the void spaces in the attic and roof assembly, which made it difficult for crews to gain control of the fire immediately,” said a Creston Fire Rescue press release. It took crews several hours to extinguish the blaze, which originated from a woodstove, but the departments’ combined effort saved most of the home and its contents, although damage was estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars. Creston Fire Rescue Chief Michael Moore recommends that wood burning appliances be inspected, as the heat generated by a chimney can start a fire. “It is a really good idea to have a wood fireplace inspected for its installation,” he said. “In this fire, it is evident that the installation of the chimney was not adequate with clearances and over time there will be a fire.”

One of the most popular calendars around town this month has helped put fun into fundraising for the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS). The 2015 TAPS Calendar, with its small format and black and white photos, features seniors and TAPS staff dressed in vintage costumes and posed in a variety of scenes. It is sure to put a smile on faces throughout the year. The idea for the calendar came from summer intern Jamie Pommier last year, said TAPS community liaison Maureen Cameron. “It was something our seniors can be a part of,” she said. “It illustrates people coming together and supporting each other, all while having fun. It is a great reflection of the TAPS program itself.” Operated by Valley Community Services, TAPS serves about 60 clients who range in age from their sixties to nineties. Social activities around the community (the program will soon be housed in Rotacrest Hall) keep clients active and in touch. “The biggest thing is participating in their community,” Cameron said. A combination of staff and volunteers (many of whom are seniors) co-ordinate activities as diverse as cooking and baking to singing and playing in a band. Intergenerational activities are an emphasis, with visits with day care children and “play dates” with kids in a park. “It is important that people can just be themselves, whether it is singing, playing an instrument, helping in the

kitchen or just socializing,” she said. Clients’ needs vary. Some may have early onset dementia, others physical ailments and, most commonly, others simply don’t have a large support network that keeps them stimulated and active. The TAPS program was started because health and social service workers know instinctively that loneliness and inactivity are major contributors to poor health. The calendar project was a great illustration about how a small thing can have a large impact. “We started planning about two months before the photo shoot,” Cameron said. “It started with broaching clients and asking for ideas. In the end, we had enough ideas for 10 years of calendars!” On the day of the photo shoot, staff, volunteers and TAPS members gathered at Jimmy’s Pub and Grill, where a variety of costumes awaited. Photographer Brian Lawrence and lighting direc-

tor Jason Smith set the poses and Gail Kitt helped with the costumes; all three are active in community theatre with Footlighters. “It was a great day,” she said. “The seniors had a great time posing and they just loved seeing the photos that were shot a few days later. They all had input in the captions we included with the photos.” Of the 500 calendars, only about 100 remain to be sold at $10 each. They can be found at Creston Town Hall, Creston Card and Stationery, Black Bear Books, Kingfisher Used Books and Creative Fix. Cameron said an unexpected consequence arose in the printing of the calendars. A decision was made to send one to each TAPS donor from recent years, as a thank you for their support. As a result, more donations have rolled in. “It’s a never-ending struggle to find funding to keep the program going,” she said. “Every dollar helps.”

When sounds of carols fill the air, And signs of the season are everywhere When hearts are light and cares are few Then we know it’s time to give our thanks to you! Happy Holidays!

Three hundred sixty-nine hampers were requested prior to Dec. 15, and the extra 30 didn’t go to waste, with over 20 being requested on Dec. 16 — pickup day — and a few trickling in later. “People really go out with a real abundance,” Greentree said. “It’s not just a box with a few canned goods.” Included in the family boxes is a $25 gift card to help with the purchase of a turkey if they so choose — and those gift cards, combined with food purchases add up to about $25,000, which makes cash donations just as important (excess funds are distributed throughout the year to

help the community with medical and dental expenses). Volunteers of all ages took part in the packing, with children and seniors working side by side to get the job done.

“People really go out with a real abundance. It’s not just a box with a few canned goods.” Tom Greentree

“Some kids’ parents even pulled them out of school today,” said Greentree. For many volunteers, hamper packing brings them back year after year. Paul Bartlett, for example, was helping last week for his 20th year. “People need this and somebody has got to do it,” he said. For 17 years, Shirley Armstrong and members of the Girl Guides Trefoil Guild have been volunteering, having started when boxes were lined up and filled on Trinity United Church pews. “It’s something that makes us feel good,” Armstrong said. Tanya Bilcik works at Pyramid Building Supplies, which annually collects children’s toys for the hampers, and she’s been volunteering since she was 16. “It gives you a really nice feeling,” she said. “There’s a lot of giving people in this town. … It’s nice to know there are a lot of warmhearted people around.”

Attracting birds may require the right type of plants

Each fall, usually mid-October, a group of local bird watching enthusiasts comes out to the Wayside Gardens for a morning bird count. Some years there are up to a dozen different species, and some years less due to the nature of our weather. To see Edmund regaining his health was a joy. In May, Harold Standen made the front page, retiring after 49 years as a volunteer firefighter. Great guy, great story. I love talking to and writing about artists, and I was pleased to learn that Bruce Patterson was putting some of his brilliant Kootenay Cameos into book form. The pen and ink sketches, accompanied by written history of historic buildings in the area, first appeared in a Kootenay Lake paper, and to see some of them compiled in book form felt long overdue. Coincidentally, in 2014 I was able to visit with and photograph two painters and a writer while they were making appearances in Calgary. Each just happened to coincide with visits to our family and it was great fun to see Sandy Kunze, Alison Masters and Lorn Wolf in the urban environment. The entire year was filled with interesting experiences, but one that really stands out was attending a dress rehearsal of a play by Adam Robertson Elementary School Grade 7 students just before Remembrance Day. It was wonderfully done in every way and left me in tears. In the story I wrote about playwright, director and teacher Tanya Poznikoff, I was touched by the efforts that teachers make to create positive and meaningful learning experiences for their students. It made me feel better about the world around me. Merry Christmas to our readers, advertisers and paper carriers — you are all reminders of what makes this such a wonderful community. Electric rates tax rich and poor equally To the Editor: I was somewhat amused by the advertisement by Fortis BC in the Creston Valley Advance, urging us to save energy, and the happy new year greeting. Your electric rate will be 3.5 per cent higher as of Jan. 1. I took an old bill of ours from October-December 2009 and applied current rates to the amounts consumed and determined that the same consumption for October-December 2014 would cost us 43 per cent more than 2009. For the

Opinion Line

same period, the basic Old Age Pension went up eight per cent. Fortis is simply the beneficiary of provincial government policy, which is to keep electric rates similar between BC Hydro and Fortis, so one area of the province cannot complain about another area of the province receiving low rates. The provincial government uses BC Hydro and ICBC as cash cows and will receive $8.9 billion by 2016-2017 in dividends from these Crown corporations, which is a form of indirect taxation passed on to us as higher electric rates and auto insurance. This indirect taxation taxes the rich and the poor at the same rates. To Christy Clark: Raise the income tax rates and don’t tax the necessities of life, which affect low-income people far more than the rich. Don Tyndall Creston

Hospital gives out own meds

To the Editor: My heart goes out to the family that lost their mother to an unfortunate mistake. It makes no sense that if an error was made at the pharmacy it would not have been rectified when the patient was admitted to the hospital. Hospital medication is dispensed from the hospital pharmacy. Shirley Armstrong Creston

Changes coming to Creston zendo yoga with Yana, a gentle form of yoga that specializes in rehabilitation; Fridays we offer hot yoga with Lori Littlejohn, a more vigourous form of yoga that is especially good for weight loss; Tuesdays at 6:30 a.m.

and Saturdays at 8 a.m. we offer sitting meditation, traditional Zen chanting and a dharma talk by me. I am the practice leader at Sakura-ji, and a transmitted Zen writing practice instructor. The winter term in 2015 will focus on writing practice. Between Jan. 6 and April 30, I will be teaching writing practice at the following times: Mondays and Thursdays at 6:30 a.m. and Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. On the first, second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, I offer a writing practice class between 7 and 9 p.m. Writing and med-

itation are closely linked. From April 24-26, there will be a writing practice and poetry workshop. I am also a certifying teacher of mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and will be offering another eight-week MBSR course starting on April 5. These classes have been very helpful to students and fill quickly, so if you are interested, register early. I have also had success in helping individual MBSR students reduce discomfort from chronic pain through one-one instruction. The Creston zendo opened its doors seven years ago. At that time, we were a room in the basement of our home and we offered only a sitting meditation practice. As you can see, we have grown into our own building and have expanded our services considerably. I want to invite you to continue to participate in Sakura-ji’s activities in the coming year and to wish you a holiday season that brings true generosity of mind and body. For more information about the activities at Sakura-ji, visit www.zenwords.net or call resident teacher Kuya Minogue at 250-428-6500.

The Solstice has passed, and once again we move from the shortest day of the year to the longest day of the year; from quiet contemplation to energetic activity. The new year brings a flurry of activity to the Creston zendo. To begin with, we have just been granted affiliation status in the Silent Thunder Order of Soto Zen Buddhism, which is based in Atlanta, Ga., and which has 11 other affiliates all over Canada and the United States. (To learn more about the Silent Thunder Order, visit silentthunderorder.org.) To honour this new affiliation, we are changing our name. We wanted a name that contains a traditional Zen image, and that represents the Creston Valley. We have settled on the name, Sakura-ji. “Sakura” means cherry blossom and “ji” means temple. We will be using the Japanese form of the name. Sakura-ji is more than a Zen centre. Our mission is to offer services and courses that enhance the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being of Kootenay residents. To realize that mission, we offer a variety of activities and courses. Tuesdays and Thursdays we offer

his birth not in December but in the fall, during the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles. The word became flesh and “tabernacled” among us. It is possible he was born in a temporary shelter, a “sukkah”, for there was no room at the local motel, and furthermore — as described in the Mishnaiac Jewish tradition — in the same fields used to graze animals kept for the temple sacrifice. The men to whom the angels appeared were therefore no ordinary shepherds, but temple employees. The angel’s announcement to them of a sign was to be the unusual sight of a human baby wrapped in cloths in an animal stall, just as they themselves would have treated and certified one of their newborn Passover lambs. The significance of this find would not be lost on them. A baby’s birth is a time to celebrate new life; however, in Jesus’ case it is striking how many allusions to his future death were voiced or implied. The gifts of the wise men, quite possibly Jews themselves (each representing one

of Israel’s scattered tribes), were a peculiar medley to give a newborn baby: gold to announce royalty, incense to declare mediating prayer, and myrrh to describe the Spirit’s anointing, which rested upon him. These men understood these gifts as vital ingredients of the tabernacle and temple, whose singular function was to facilitate blood atonement for sins. Indeed, it was the wise men’s knowledge of an ancient biblical prophecy, which predicted that a “star will come out of Jacob,” that captured their attention. The belief in astrology rests on the premise that the position of the stars influences our life here on Earth; however, in this story it was the position of the baby that influenced the star. Zechariah, Simeon and Anna all spoke of Jesus’ future redemptive destiny; his name meant “God who saves”. Simeon even warned Jesus’ mother Maryam that a day would come when her heart would be emotionally pierced — she would witness the horrific piercing of her son’s physical heart. came.” The implication being that He chose to be born. His life did not begin with His birth, nor did it end with his death. It is tempting for us to remember Jesus in this season and hold in our minds the mental image of his weakness and vulnerability as a newborn child; however, this does not do justice to the whole story. His birth was surrounded by circumstances, objects and words concerning His priestly life mission. Thirtythree and a half years later, he was killed. Whereas the picture of the lamb at birth exquisitely represents his dependence and innocence, the animal killed at Passover was not a lamb but a one-year-old ram sacrificed in the prime of life. Jacob’s prophecy over his son Judah described a future descendant who would be called the “Lion of Judah”. Animals that typified Christ, from a ram to a bull, from a lion to a heifer, from an eagle to a gazelle, speak of innocence, yes, but of weakness, no. He was in the prime of life and easily able to resist capture, trial or death by his wisdom, knowledge or power, but instead as Isaiah predicted “as a sheep before its shearers is silent, he did not open his mouth.” Jesus’ birth can and should be celebrated (Tabernacles is the only Jewish feast to which all nations are invited to actively participate in); he likely celebrated it himself with a party of five others on the Mount of Transfiguration. However, we must not be tempted to confine our lasting image of him to a powerless baby. He is a king whose name is above all names, whose kingdom and government will have no end. His personage is the kindest and safest in the universe, but he is also as dangerous and as free as one of the wild animals that He created. The Chronicles of Narnia are a masterful allegory of the gospel story, where C.S. Lewis used a lion called Aslan as the figure to personify Christ. In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Susan and Mr Beaver are conversing: “Aslan is a lion — the Lion, the great Lion.” “Ooh,” said Susan. “I’d thought he was a man. Is he — quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion.” “Safe?” said Mr Beaver. “Who said anything about safe? ’Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

SEASON TO SHARE — The Creston Ministerial Associaiton recieved a considerable boost

from the community to help with its annual Christmas hamper program. Staff of Creston and District Credit Union handed over a cheque for $2,000 to Grace Christian Fellowship Pastor Stephen Schneider. The staff raised nearly $1,000 from a bake sale and the credit union not only matched the proceeds, but topped them up to make an even $2,000 donation.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!

Brian Lawrence

After planning for 2013 to be their last year, the Golf Girls were at it again, making wreaths and Christmas trees to raise funds for the Christmas hampers. This year, they raised $2,520, for a total of $8,270 over five years. Creston generosity still helping Shamattawa BY MURIEL BUHR

Santa’s elves drove transport trucks this year again! Over the last five years, the community of Creston has come together to help a faraway community in Canada. Shamattawa, Man., is a small fly-in-only community 1,300 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg with a population of about 1,100 residents, including approximately 700 children. For 11 months of every year, people who live there can only leave by flying out, an expensive undertaking in a town with little to no industry

or employment. With only one store, items you and I take for granted are not available to these Canadians. Perhaps you’ve seen the TV show Ice Road Truckers. If you have, you will have seen the difficult route big rigs take to get supplies to that community during the very coldest 30 days of the year. Only if the weather maintains a teethchattering, sustained deep chill can an ice road be cut though to that tiny town in February or March. Doing without is normal. The things we take for granted are expensive and considered a luxury

in Shamattawa. Five years ago, a gallon of milk cost $14.29 and fruit was a luxury rarely enjoyed by the people. Prices must have only gone up since then. Imagine. On that Thanksgiving Day five years ago, a group of people met a young RCMP officer and were inspired to help. From his commitment to serve came our residents’ commitment to give. Within three weeks of meeting that young officer, residents of this community picked, packed and shipped 2,000 pounds of apples for the people of Shamattawa. All those apples were donated

by local orchardists Frank Trylick, Len Messinger, Bill Leyh, Dave White and the Shukin family, all of

whom gave without question or remuneration. Just to help. See MANITOBA, page 14

May every moment of your holiday be magical and bright. We hope the season finds you surrounded by loved ones, laughter and all the makings of new memories you will cherish for a lifetime. We owe our success to the faith and support of our good friends and customers here in the community, and we are grateful to share another year with all of you. From page 13 With the support of local and regional truckers and Perimeter Aviation, which flies in from both Winnipeg and Thompson, it was done at no cost to anyone. Shortly after the shipment went out to Shamattawa, Christmas gifts began to arrive from people all over the valley who had heard of the hardships our fellow Canadians face in that far away town. People wanted to help. And so, Christmas by Creston began. Each year now, more than 700 gifts and a huge load of fresh apples gets shipped halfway across the country to help out a town I doubt anyone has ever visited. Gifts come from residents of all ages and from community

Welcome, Christmas! May the joy of Christmas reside in your heart and home today and throughout the coming year.

groups like the wonderful ladies in the Quilts for Kids (Gail Mason, Sharon Kuny, Judy Dyck, Hildegard Mercredi, Diane Price, Pauline Murray, Linda Soare, Jean Swalwell and Eileen Briault) who donated 27 beautiful, handcrafted quilts and from Shukins Orchards, which not only donates fresh fruit to make sure each child has nutritious treats but also gives a much needed sorting place for the volunteers to meet, sort, pack and stack boxes of gifts ready for shipping. Warm socks were donated to keep children’s toes warm, too. Gifts of warm clothing, Christmas stockings, books, scarves, personal items and more were donated by the Creston Valley Gleaners Society and friends. Mention a need, they came through. Toys were dropped off throughout the year by anonymous donators too numerous to count but gratefully acknowledged. The generosity of Extra Foods and their support of the people of Shamattawa continue to touch our hearts. With gifts of personal items and help with buying those warm items of clothing, we ourselves felt warmed though. Overwaitea Foods continued to help, as well. See DONATIONS, page 15

Thanks, and best wishes for a happy holiday, from our family to yours!

The Merriest of Christmases to Our Arts Community

Christmas by Creston volunteer Terrie Faulkner in a Shukin Orchards warehouse, used as a preparation and packing area for the program.

Donations

From page 14 With the generous help and support from Columbia Basin Trust and Regional District of Central Kootenay areas A and B, the Christmas by Creston project worked to gather gifts. Every individual donation added up to 700 gifts for children. What other community could do that but ours? Volunteers and friends came together again. Terrie Faulkner, who worked with Mickey Godidek, Joe Esler, Alicea Shukin and her family, together with others, got together and sorted through 700 donated gifts and packed them according to age and gender amid laughter and joy and renewed faith in humanity. We know that people gave regardless of their personal income level. They gave because, in spite of their own finances, they care about others. Single moms and dads dug deep to give a gift to another person’s child. Grandparents gave and families gave. And children gave to other children. It was an exciting experience every day to open a box and pull out another lovely gift. Or see the hard work of people like Katherine Lebo with her beautiful hats, blankets and mittens. Or have Kate Hall arrive a few days in a row with gifts in hand each time, to make sure that every child received a gift. Signe and Ken Miller, as always, were there to help. As was Hildegard

Mercredi, who worked long hours each day to make sure an extra quilt and hand-knitted warm toques were able to be completed in time to be shipped. Acts of kindness! This year, as every year, we worried about shipping. Would we be fortunate enough to receive support from our local and long distance transportation? We contacted Lisa Harrison and Murray Oswald of Columbia Brewery, who generously assured us that they would indeed transport our pallets of gifts from Creston to Winnipeg. We knew that Creston Parcel, which has always been a huge supporter of this community, would be there once again as it has been since the beginning, and sure enough, Matt came to pick up and deliver our pallets to the brewery. Longtime benefactor Gardewine of Winnipeg, which specializes in transportation throughout northern Manitoba and beyond, and Jim Sinclair gave, once again, gifts that we could not do without. They drove our four heavy pallets of gifts and apples from Winnipeg to Thompson to the Perimeter Aviation’s cargo depot. Perimeter Aviation graciously loaded more than 130 heavy boxes onto cargo planes and flew them into Shamattawa for distribution by the RCMP and their partners in the community. Not one of these companies did this for notoriety or monetary gain, but just to help. How cool is that? Next year, pajamas would be a great gift. Spread the word everyone, and watch for those nice warm paja-

mas. In the cold, they can be worn as underclothes to keep warm. We would love to give every child a pajama set and a toy. It always warms the soul to experience the generosity and warmth of the human spirit. Sharing in the common goal to create happiness is an amazing, uplifting feeling. From Yahk to Riondel, people came together once again to help someone else. Can you imagine the joy of those children so far away on Christmas Day? Christmas is the season for giving. In the valley here, Christmas lasted all year long. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Bountiful youth deliver 18 loads of firewood BOUNTIFUL YOUTH GROUP

“I’m so in love with my family right now,” says Doris Blackmore while serving hot chocolate to the crew of energetic youth chopping and loading the seven pickup trucks full of firewood. For the Bountiful Youth Group Christmas service project, she organized with the Creston Ministerial Associaiton to deliver, chop and stack firewood for people in need. By early afternoon, the hungry crew returned from delivering 18 truckloads around the valley, eager to share their stories over lunch. “Next year we would like to expand this project and invite oth-

ers who would like to join in,” said Winston Blackmore, Doris’s father. “Looking out for each other is what being a good neighbor is all about.” If you know someone who is in need, please refer them or contact the Creston Ministerial Association on their behalf. The Bountiful Youth Group extends it appreciation to Prairie Holdings for donating the firewood, the people who donated their time and pickup trucks, the Creston Ministerial Association and the community members who made this possible by receiving the service, as well as Dairy Queen for the yummy Dilly Bars at the end of the day.

A Christmas Poem

They strolled along the beach, together, hand-in-hand She saw the sun reflecting on her golden wedding band Her long hair sweeping back, blowing lightly in the breeze He ran his fingers through it, so composed, so at ease She looked into his eyes, the molten pools of glass Reflecting all his thoughts, she could see into his past In both her outstretched hands, she felt the contours of his face The clefted dimples, the chiseled chin, everything in place He picked her up, and carried her, into the ocean waves He made as if to drop her in, then caught her, in a save They splashed around, and laughed and played, until the sun went down Then walked amongst the seagulls, and the starfish on the ground She wanted this moment to last forever, to freeze it all in time Everything was perfect, it almost seemed sublime... Everything was perfect, that is - ’til she awoke She was drenched in perspiration, the entire sheets were soaked She realized she’d been dreaming again, and tho’ it scared her so It was her way of hanging on, of never letting go She looked on her bedside table, the picture of them together Smiling at the camera, as if this could last forever The cobwebs slowly faded, the tears streamed down her face She could detect his masculine scent, entranced on his pillowcase She buried her head in the pillow, and continued to softly cry Oh what she’d give for one last hug, and the chance to say good-bye What would she tell her children, how could it be okay To never see their father again, she looked to the sky, and prayed Yes - their Daddy was a hero, who lost his life in the war How could she find the strength to say, they would see him nevermore Written in honour of those who gave their lives for their country, and those who continue to serve - God Bless you all and Thank You

Gin’s on Canyon offering a taste of home

T

hree weeks. That was all the time Gin Bergman had to recreate her restaurant when ABC Country Restaurant gave her the opportunity to leave the franchise. And so, Creston’s ABC closed on Sept. 30, reopening as Gin’s on Canyon on Story and Oct. 1. photo by The change came about Brian Lawrence when Ricky’s All Day Grill franchise owner Frank di Benedetto bought the ABC chain, and since that meant Creston now had one of each, one had to go. “We are direct competition,” said Bergman. Of course, that meant that anything with any ABC proprietary design had to be changed — even the coffee. “I really liked the ABC coffee,” she said. “I think I tried about 70 different coffees before I found something I liked.” Finding the new coffee allowed Bergman to set Gin’s apart from many other restaurants in a simple way, by offering two different roasts — something that customers have appreciated. And she should know what they like, having started there as a waitress in 1997, before buying the ABC franchise with her husband six years ago. The Creston-born and –raised restaurateur was sure of one thing when renaming the place in the fall: “I wanted something from Creston in the name.” And she got it — twice — with her name and the name of downtown’s main street, which her 122 Northwest Blvd. restaurant is barely a block away from. Changing from ABC to Gin’s allowed Bergman to change the food, as well, which meant dropping a number of prepared items from the menu. “We try to do just about everything from scratch,” Bergman

Gin’s on Canyon owner Gin Bergman in her restaurant, formerly part of the ABC Country Restaurant franchise.

said. “It’s whole turkeys we cook now. We peel our own potatoes to make mashed potatoes.” Soups, too, are homemade, and the borscht she serves is a recipe from her husband’s family. A lot of meals come in better portion sizes, too — small, and therefore less wasted food — and at prices better suited to Creston’s demographic. It’s been a welcome change.

“The community has really come to show their support,” she said. “It’s a great feeling. … They’re saying it’s so much better.” And that’s only the beginning, with a gluten-free menu and homemade burgers and fries in the planning stages. After so many years working in the restaurant, Bergman is at home in almost any part of

it, having spent time in the kitchen when a cook left soon after she bought ABC. But the interaction with the customers is what she enjoys the most, “making sure they’re treated like somebody special.” “We try our hardest to give the best service we can give, with great food and prices,” she said. “Seeing smiling faces as they go out the door is great.”

She appreciates, too, the chance to be part of Creston’s business community, something she didn’t dream of while growing up. “It’s kind of mind-blowing,” she said. “It’s kind of surreal. When you’re a kid you have all these plans and dreams, and when you’re here and part of the community, it’s just different. It gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling inside.”

Thunder Cats back in division’s fourth place BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats have fallen behind in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division, holding fourth place (as of Dec. 16) with 36 points, two behind the Kimberley Dynamiters. The backward slip — while the Fernie Ghostriders (49 points) and Golden Rockets (41) remain in first and second place — came after a Dec. 12 5-4 overtime win over the fifth-place Columbia Valley Rockies and a 2-1 Dec. 16 loss to the Kimberley Dynamiters. Head coach Jeff Dubois attributed the narrow Dec. 12 victory to being short a handful of players, both forwards and defencemen. “Ultimately, we were happy to get the result given the quality of guys that were out of the lineup,” he said. The Rockies scored first on a power play, and the score was tied 2-2 after first-period goals by Tyler Podgorenko and Nicholas Kovacik, and 4-4 after second-period goals by Podgorenko (power play) and Kyle Richter. For his second-period goal, “he drove down the wall and just put the puck right inside the post,” said Dubois. “That was a goal scorer’s goal.” Podgorenko eventually scored the winning goal just over 20 seconds into double overtime. “Tyler Podgorenko was sort of the hero for us on Friday night,” said Dubois. “You don’t see defencemen picking up hat tricks too often. … He was probably the one guy who was the real difference maker.” The 18-year-old Nelson native and Thunder Cats veteran earned Creston’s only goal in the following game, scoring with three minutes left in the second period. “They came and played a pretty smart 60 minutes of road hockey,” said Dubois. “They set the tone in terms of their work ethic and made us match that.” The Dynamiters scored once in each of the first and third periods, following a couple of Creston defensive zone breakdowns. “They capitalized and you’ve got to tip your hat for that,” said Dubiois. Although the Thunder Cats rebounded in the second period, outshooting the Dynamiters 13-9 — a far cry from the first period’s five shots — and tying the score, they slowed back down in the third, managing only two shots. “You’re not going win a lot of games playing 20 good minutes of hockey,” said Dubois. The contention between the Thunder Cats and Dynamiters is no secret in the two communities, and it’s not always a friendly rivalry.

Seniors C.V. SENIORS ASSOCIATION Dart scores from Dec. 1: Ladies: Lucy Jefferson, 95; Connie Opsahl, 94; Dot Eisenhut, 88. Men: Allen McLaren, 91; Chris Havstein, 91; Merlin Thompson, 87; George Wiebe, 84.

Dart scores from Dec. 8: Ladies: Sally Malner, 110; Lucy Jefferson, 85; Darlene Thompson, 80. Men: Merlin Thompson, 107; Allen McLaren, 103; Don Holmes, 84. Cribbage scores from Dec. 12: Ladies: Sally Malner, 847; Peggy Konkin, 844; Kay Heffner, 832. Men: Rody Malner, 819; Chuck Truscott, 805; Bob Wikdahl, 794.

After a few months of working with the Thunder Cats, Dubois has found it goes beyond simply who wins and who loses. “We’ve been battling back and forth in the standings and we’ve had some competitive games,” he said. “There’s certainly a high level of respect from our team to theirs in terms of their ability and compete level, and we know that wins against that group are going to have to be earned.” But as a newcomer, Dubois has noted that the bad blood comes from

the top down, as he witnessed during an incident involving longtime Kimberley head coach Jerry Bancks during the Dec. 17 game. “To me, there’s a line that you don't cross as a coach,” said Dubois. “Last night, you had the Kimberley coach going at one of our players verbally from the bench after a play and I just don’t have any respect for that. If you want to get involved in the yapping, strap on the pads and get out there, take a few hits. Otherwise, shut your mouth.” The Thunder Cats travelled to

Fernie on Friday to visit the Ghostriders, their final game before a Christmas break (due to holiday deadlines, details were unavailable at press time). Although they beat the Ghostriders last time they visited, Dubois expected it would still be a tough match for Creston. “They have so much going on offensively, they’re such a deep team offensively, the moment you let the foot off the gas in the defensive zone, they’ve got the skill level to burn you,” he said.
