Construction begins on new hospice space Scott Stanfield Record Staff
For Audrey Craig and others at the Comox Valley Hospice Society, a 40-year dream will become a reality next year when a new four-bed hospice space opens at The Views residential care facility at St. Joseph’s General Hospital. “It’s been an extremely long journey for all of us,” Craig, the society’s president, said Friday at

a ceremony at the hospital. The provincial government provided a $250,000 grant to the Hospital Foundation to support construction of the space, which is expected to open by mid-2015. Island Health will provide ongoing operational funds while the Hospice Society — through donations — will provide supports and counselling to clients and their families. The foundation and the society
continue to fundraise for capital construction, furnishing and equipment to create a welcoming hospice environment. Each room will have an ocean or garden view. A clinical operations working group is determining how the new hospice service will operate in terms of procedures, admission criteria and eligibility requirements. “Community-based hospice care is an important component
of the range of services and supports available to individuals and families who are dealing with end-of-life care and decisions during a very difficult and stressful time,” Island Health board chair Don Hubbard said. Foundation representative Marion Lade said the designated four-bed palliative hospice unit — in some ways — brings to a close a wish dear to her heart.

Council approved the next step in a rezoning application for the proposed Lorne Hotel, accepting revised design drawings based on a recent public open house and granted second reading on the project. The approval makes way for a public hearing in the new year. Town planner Marvin Kamenz told council during a presentation that submissions from the public following an open house on Nov. 26 were mixed. He said the main areas of concern were the character of the building; design of the building (lack of architectural detailing); mass of the building (height); onsite parking adequacy and sound attenuation for residential units above the pub.

Christmas tree chipping first weekend of new year Erin Haluschak Record Staff
The Comox Fire Department and those across the Comox Valley are hoping households will truly make it a green Christmas. The fire station is hosting its annual Christmas tree chipping Jan. 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by donation, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to You Are Not Alone (Y.A.N.A). For a minimum of a $5 donation, the firefight-

Thanks to the generous donations from the Comox Valley community, a group of women are now about to enjoy a warm meal and more over the holidays. Phil Peterson of Kean Auto Services in Courtenay said his fundraiser — now in its second year — went “very well,” and reached his goal: an oven for the Stepping Stones Women’s Recovery House, along with a cash donation. “Finances are always tight, and their range isn’t working … it’s beyond repair,” he explained
earlier in the month. “Last year, the community was so responsive; people are great and it was really overwhelming.” This year Peterson explained the community made the fundraiser happen, with “very generous” donations. “They really came together,” he added. He credited Home Depot for stepping up and providing a range with a significant price reduction, and said the recovery house will now be able to use the oven in time for Christmas dinner. The fundraising drive ran for three weeks in December.

ers will pick up a Christmas tree from a resident’s home. “This is a great project and a win-win for all involved. The Christmas trees get recycled as compost and the firefighters help out their favourite local charity,” said fire chief Gord Schreiner. He added it is another example of how firefighters work hard to make their communities better places to live. For tree pick-up, call 250-339-2432.

Student integration through PLC projects Nearly one-and-a-half years since the implementation of district-wide professional learning community (PLC) time in Comox Valley schools, the Comox Valley Record looks at a couple examples of the work being done by staff at the elementary and secondary levels. The group made posters for each classroom so the traits could become part of how teachers teach and evaluate, according to May.

Con’t from page A1 The main positives in the submissions were moving forward with the vitalization of the downtown area; redevelopment of the ‘Lorne’ site as a pub and restaurant; provision of additional informal public space and additional residence downtown. In response to the areas of concern brought up at the open house, revised drawings have been submitted, explained Kamenz. The revisions include emphasis on the Comox Avenue and Port Augusta Street corner as the main focal point and primary entrance of the building; consistency of the awning and canopy treatments; replacement of planters with nautical elements which double as public seating; increased pedestrian accessibility, emplacement of patio wall with marine-themed post and railing; heritage/ nautical onsite lighting fixtures; a historical Lorne Hotel mural and heritage-style posts and balcony railings, reflective of the original Lorne building design and marine theme. Coun. Hugh MacKinnon said he was pleased public input was looked into and the developer took some interest in the feedback. “It validates why we had a public meeting,” he added. While Coun. Barbara Price noted she does have concerns with the design, she will support hearing more feedback at the public hearing. At this time there is no date set for the public hearing as the town’s planning department is waiting on revised drawings, but Mayor Paul Ives noted it is likely to be in January or February. ••• In order to improve service to Rogers Wireless customers

Freewheel gives users an added dimension of mobility Submitted
Chayse Krull is thrilled with the prospect of the added mobility the Freewheel allows. Photo Submitted 34 C2C Express To Comox
His eyes sparkling with excitement, Chayse Krull manoeuvres his wheelchair up to the halflog and hops the newly attached Freewheel device up and over its rounded top. The 16-year-old’s enthusiasm was bubbling with thoughts of the freedom the new device will bring him and other members of the Comox Valley Wheelchair Sports Society. “Most of us living in the Valley take for granted the ability to access all the local trails and beaches,” says Mark Arsenault, manager of the Courtenay Alberni Outpost store, which purchased the Freewheel for the society and presented it earlier this month. “The Freewheel will allow anyone confined to a wheelchair that same access.” When attached to an ordinary wheelchair, the Freewheel lifts the small front wheels of the chair off the ground, turning the chair into a three-wheeler. “With this on, you can simply roll over so many ordinary obstacles that a walking person would not even notice, like curbs, grass, dirt trails, gravel, snow, and even packed sand,” said CVWSS president Rene Poirier. The Freewheel also makes it much easier to ‘pop a wheelie’ to get the attached wheel up onto an obstacle with momentum, which in turn makes it easier to power the large rear wheels of the chair over the obstacle as well. “We’re thrilled that Alberni Outpost saw this as a valuable contribution to our community,” said Poirier. “The certificate we gave them is titled ‘Local Hero’.” The club hosts wheelchair basketball most Friday evenings in the Comox Community Centre.
About half of the club’s members have disabilities, but everyone plays in the sport wheelchairs owned by the club. Members of the general public, disabled or not, are invited to come out to try the sport. For more information, check www.cvwss.ca.

Hospice: MLA McRae thanked for championing cause Con’t from page A1 “And yet I know the reality is not the end of a wish but a beginning,” Lade said. “What a difference this will make in the lives of those who are dying and to their family members.” While some prefer to remain at home, hospital board chair Chris Kelsey says some patients and their families need the support of trained personnel and the resources of a hospice service. “There can be so much joy within the walls of this building, from the birth of babies to people overcoming great medical hardships, but there can also of course be so much sadness and grief,” Kelsey said. “We hope that with our partners we’re going to be able to provide a place where they are treated with caring and compassion — a place where they can find true peace as lives draw to a close.” Craig thanked Comox Valley MLA

Concerned citizen wants scooter users to light up Scott Stanfield Record Staff
Call it a Christmas wish or a New Year’s resolution — Judy Winnig is encouraging seniors, especially those who rely on mobility scooters to get around town, to make themselves more visible to motorists. She also wishes the provincial government would mandate scooter manufacturers to have running lights similar to vehicles, along with some type of reflective material. “When they get sideways in a crosswalk, you can’t see them,” said Winnig, who feels too many people have been killed while riding mobility scooters. On a recent occasion, she said a woman on a scooter in Comox was nearly struck by a vehicle making a left turn at a crosswalk. “They’re very hard to spot,” Winnig said of scooter users. “There has to be a way that we can make them safer. I don’t want to hit one. I don’t think I could sleep if I hit one.” Scooter users are technically classified as pedestrians, noted Winnig, who suggests the problem could be solved by installing an LED light onto a scooter. Other inexpensive devices include safety bands, reflective tape and light sticks.
“There’s so many things out there you can buy,” she said. “Let’s get grandma and grandpa lit up for the holidays. If you don’t know what else to buy them, buy them lights.” Besides the dark colours on most scooters, Winnig notes the limited mobility and diminished reaction time of those who ride scooters. “I don’t know how some of them can see when don’t have
any lights. So they need to see and be seen.” Winnig has discussed the issue with Comox Valley MLA Don McRae and Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula, who expects her to pitch the idea to council in the near future. At this time, she isn’t looking for funding. “I think it makes absolute, perfect sense,” Jangula said. “I think that the reality is that
anything we can do to make scooter riders, bicycle riders and pedestrians safer, it’s better for all of us concerned.” He notes the compounding factor

COURTENAY SEARS. ShopLocally. Locally. COURTENAY SEARS. Shop Keep fit with 12 days of fitness tips over the holidays The holidays are full of fun, but can also be busy and stressful. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle over the holidays can be challenging. But the abundance of food and drinks that come with this time of year don’t have to detour you from your regular physical activity routine. To help you stay active this holiday season, we’ve taken inspiration from “The 12 Days of Christmas” to compile this guide to 12 days of physical activity: Day 1: Play a game. Sweat away holiday stress with a pick-up basketball game, or go bowling! Physical activity gives your body an activity break and is a great way to have fun celebrating with friends, family, and co-workers. Day 2: Dance to your favourite holiday songs. Turn up the music and dance your way into a festive mood! Or borrow Active Comox Valley’s Wii and Just Dance your way to better health. Day 3: Try a physical activity app. Get yourself a present from the app store – look into an app that tracks physical activity on a daily basis, like a pedometer. Day 4: Grab one of Active Comox Valley’s many trail maps and go on a family adventure. Make it a scavenger hunt and prepare a list of items the family has to collect to make your own wreath. Day 5: Give the gift of activity. Consider sporting equipment or a set of exercise classes that you and your family can do together to give as presents this year. Day 6: Take a walk. How about an after dinner stroll around the neighbourhood to take in all the Christmas light decorations? Remember; wear reflective clothing when walking at night. Day 7: Create your own Winter Olympics and have you and the kids participate in various events. A hockey shoot indoors, a burpee contest, create your own snowballs from white socks (roll them up) and have an indoor snowball target throw. Day 8: Visit a playground. Try resistance training at your local community park. Aside from playing with your kids, there are lots of ways to use the equipment for your own workout.
Day 9: Take a dip and go for a skate. at the local pool. Take Day 10: Unleash the family for a fun your inner child. CHRISTMAS TREATS FOR staff
and students of Ecole Puntledge Park. Their wonderful Christmas concert entertained a packed house of parents, grandparents and friends. The hallways and gym were beautifully decorated with such attractive seasonal artwork; a truly welcoming atmosphere. After a summer and fall of disruption, they all deserve a pat on the back and a well-earned holiday.
TO THE MIDDLE age man who was
shooting off his mouth in Value Village today in regards to seniors being given a 30 per cent discount on Tuesday, may Santa put coal in your stocking! To stand there and loudly proclaim how seniors are the last ones that should be given a discount, that seniors are the ones with all the rich pensions and that people like yourself that work their butt off to pay for those pensions should have the discounts was not only disgusting to listen to but totally out of line. Let’s see if you feel the same way when you are a senior and trying to make ends me living below the poverty level! And a merry Christmas to you.
I’D LIKE TO publicly wish a big
beautiful stocking of wishes come true to Leah of Casa Loma & Comox Valley Seniors Villages. She is a fantastically wonderful person who deeply cares for those seniors and families who need help finding senior living solutions. I was totally lost as to where to go or what to do to find help for my father. Leah actually stopped, took the time to really listen as to what was going on with my father and provide possible ideas and interim solutions while we wait for a residential care bed. She gave me hope, caring calmness and logic when I was at my wits end and in tired tears. While we were talking, many of the residents that live there walked up just to say hi to her and beamed such big smiles when they saw her. You know she is not just a regular someone doing her job when that happens. Thank you for really caring Leah. You made my father’s and my holiday season a little easier. I hope he will be happily and safely living there soon.

washes out again. It was only a couple years ago that they had to repair the side of the road, when high water washed away road mulch that they repaired shoulder with, and never cleaned the ditch on the other side so water could run to river. Did they learn then? Apparently not, because they repaired it the same way this time. Why, when you had all the equipment there, you would not spend one hour and

THE LINC YOUTH Centre and In-
door Skatepark would like to thank the community for their patience and support during our recent flooding. We managed to move our 7th Annual Turkey Dinner to The Filberg Centre Lounge, on Sunday, Dec. 14, to share in a festive evening of fun and food with upwards of 50 youth! Thank you to our event sponsors Thrifty Foods (downtown), Searle’s Shoes, Sieffert’s Farm Market, Hot Chocolates, Grains Bakery, Lush Valley Food Action Society, Anne, Robbie, Comox Valley Glacier Kings, Ethereal - DJs Adam and Corey, Chancellor, the wandering magician, Courtenay Recreation, City of Courtenay, Courtenay Recreational Association, and CRA Board for their support and donations to the event. Because of your support, we were able to give many youth a night of celebration and food that they may not receive otherwise. Thank you.
COMOX VALLEY LIONS Christ-
mas Bingo was a big success due to the annual support from our Comox Fire Dept. members. Not only do they loan us tables and chairs, but Angela and Brian worked the floor. Special thanks goes out to Assistant Chief: Jim Lariviere, 12:45 a.m. call at home to open up their doors to return tables etc. This Fire Hall of Volunteers have a Heart of Gold !!!
COMOX VALLEY LIONS Bingo
wish to thank the community for its support this year. “It’s because of You, We can help others”. Bingo returns Fridays starting Jan. 2, 2015-- Merry Christmas.
A HUGE BOUQUET of thanks to Santa John for visiting Comox Valley Lions Christmas Bingo, you left us with a smile and a reminder to remember the kids. A BIG THANK you to Karen at the
Courtenay Post Office off Ryan Road for her outstanding service. I was purchasing stamps to mail Christmas cards and wanted to use up some older 50 cent stamps. She was very proficient and even took my stack of cards to apply the stamps. After I left, I thought there had been an error in how much I had been charged. I must have had a “blond moment” in communicating how many I needed. When I returned, she had already addressed an envelope to me, containing the surplus stamps, with a hand written note stating that some of the remaining cards I had left for her to stamp, already had stamps on them, so she was returning the extra stamps I had purchased! Talk about personalized service! About 20 years ago, my dad had been the business agent for the Letter Carriers Union. He would be so proud.
I AM TIRED of hearing about Harpers “Balanced Budget” - any darned fool could do it by cutting expenses. By cutting money for health care, CBC, mail delivery, veterans, seniors, en-
vironmental protection, education, childcare etc. I could balance mine by not eating but I would die and that is what is happening to the Canada we love. Thank you Mr. Harper.
KRIS, YOU ARE a good friend in-
deed… I have been upgrading our bathroom over the last month or so, and had got to the point of installing sliding shower doors along the bath edge when I got a call from St. Joe’s for a long-awaited surgery appointment. We had been using our downstairs shower to this point. I was caught off guard and wasn’t able to ‘seal’ the new shower doors around the frame. After surgery, I was bedridden for 10 days, then told I could shower. Problem was that I couldn’t make the stairs to shower, and the new shower doors weren’t waterproof. My wife phoned Kris and asked if he could silicone the seal for us. The next afternoon, he was there with ‘all the fixin’s’ and did a marvellous job for us and I was able to shower the next day. Kris, your ‘friend in need, has a friend indeed’ Thankyou so much, for helping us out at a difficult time. Your friends, R & L.
THERE OUGHT TO be a law against
saying “nice to see you again” to people you don’t want to talk to. Talk about mixed messages! You pretend to like someone but won’t stop and have an actual conversation with them. If you are really and truly happy to see them, you would ask how they are doing and take the time to actually talk to them. The “nice to see you” walk-by routine looks especially bad at social events where you obviously have all the time in the world to talk to everybody else. Not only is this insulting to the person’s intelligence, but if you’re also worried about your social image it makes you look like a phony. There is no rule that we have to like and get along with everybody. Amen to that. However, if you wish to be polite and acknowledge someone’s existence, all you need to do is say “Hi” and leave it at that. That way the other person won’t be offended and you don’t end up looking like a jerk.
A BIG CHRISTMAS thank you to Marla of Blue Moon Winery and all the ladies who attended ‘Spices and Blarney’ culinary event on Nov. 30. We were able to donate $1,200 to Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness. We could not have done it without all of you. TO THE THIEF that stole a bag of newly altered clothes in the Comox mall (two pairs of new jeans, ladies’ dress slacks and a pair of shorts) you were seen, so take them back to the mall office or RoxAnn’s. You stole from an 80-year-old lady that bought these for a family that is needier than you. Besides, you would never fit a size 12. Stop stealing and start buying your own. They are not yours to take but if you have a conscience do the right thing as Christmas is close and a bag of coal for you and bad luck to you for 2015. I have no forgiveness for thieves. Merry Christmas to all the staff and thank you.

Alasdair and Natalie are on tour throughout the North American west coast and we have been lucky enough to be named as one of their tour stops. The Big Yellow Merville Hall is gaining a reputation. The musical partnership between Fraser, long regarded as Scotland’s premier fiddle ambassador, and Haas, the sizzlingly talented young California cellist, may not seem an obvious one, but it works flawlessly. Fraser, acclaimed by the San Francisco Examiner as “the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling,” has a concert and recording career spanning 30 years, with a long list of awards, accolades, television credits, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Titanic, Last of the Mohicans). Haas is one of the most soughtafter cellists playing traditional music today. She and Fraser have toured as a
duo for over 15 years, wowing audiences at festivals and concerts worldwide with their unique sound. Their first album together, Fire & Grace, was awarded Best Album of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards 2004. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, Haas wasn’t even born when Fraser was winning national fiddle competitions on the other side of the Atlantic. But this seemingly unlikely pairing is the fulfillment of a long-standing musical dream for Fraser, whose cutting-edge musical explorations took him full circle to find a cellist who could help him return the cello to its historical role at the rhythmic heart of Scottish dance music. Haas was just 11 when she first attended Fraser’s Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School in C a l i f o rnia. She responded to Fraser’s challenge t o
Cellists are coming out of the woodwork to study ❝ with Natalie, to learn how she creates a groove and a whole chunky rhythm section. ❞ Alisdair Fraser find and release the cello’s rhythmic soul, and four years later, when she was just 15, they played their first gig together. Now regularly touring with Fraser and creating a buzz at festivals and in concert halls throughout Europe and North America, Haas is in the vanguard of young cellists who are re-defining the role of the cello in traditional music. “Cellists are coming out of the woodwork to study with Natalie, to learn how she creates a groove and a whole chunky rhythm
section,” says Fraser. “It’s inspiring to hear the cello unleashed from its orchestral shackles!” For more information, go online to www.alasdairfraser.com, or www.nataliehaas.com So, on Friday, Jan. 9, settle in to hear Scottish Super Fiddler Alas-
dair Fraser and rockin’ cellist Natalie Haas in concert at the Big Yellow Merville Hall, on the Old Island Highway in Merville. Doors open 7 p.m., the show starts 7:30 p.m. Tickets $18 adult/$10 youth and will be on sale at The Music Plant in Campbell River, Blue Heron Books in Comox and Long & McQuade in Courtenay. At the door, $20 adult/$12 youth. This concert will also help to raise awareness of newly established Stolen Church which now rests proudly on the hall grounds, awaiting restoration. WinterJam ramblings: The artistic director’s viewpoint In a two-part series, WinterJam 100 artistic director Doug Cox - the man behind the music - gives his insight regarding the acts he has booked for WinterJam 2015. Here are his previews of the first five acts.
A
s the guy who gets to book the music for WinterJam, I try to book a diverse lineup of world-class talent that will attract an audience from all over B.C. I dare say, you can’t even find this kind of a January celebration in cities like Victoria or Vancouver. The Valley is vibrant and alive. Here’s the lineup for WinterJam 100, with a brief overview of who they are for the uninitiated. See you on the dance floor! Folk Legends – Tom Paxton and Valdy – Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Native Sons Hall Tom Paxton is one of the fathers of great singer-songwriters, a career that spans from the 1950s to today. Tom wrote The Last Thing On My Mind, Bottle Of Wine, Ramblin’ Boy, Wasn’t That A Party, and so many other songs that have become part of the fabric that defines the music of a generation. And, Valdy, of course, is our own iconic Canadian folk performer. There is no other artist in Canada more recognizable or cherished to Canadian roots music fans than this Salt Spring Island troubadour. This is an all ages show so you can bring the kids. World Beat Dance - Locarno – Friday, Jan. 16 at the Best Western Westerly Just announced as the last show to be added to the WinterJam lineup, Locarno is
the Latin project of the Paperboys frontman, Tom Landa. This will be a dance! The music, like Tom, is part Mexican but with strong doses of Cuban Son, Latin soul, pop and funk. Locarno’s approach is so genuine and so welcome for audiences who enjoy great song writing, a respect for tradition, a searching musical curiosity and virtuoso performance skills. Guitar Galore – Rick Vito & Billy Burnette – Saturday, Jan. 17 at the Native Sons Hall A show for fans of the electric guitar featuring two players who have contributed so much to modern music history. You have heard these guys on recordings with artists like Fleetwood Mac, Little Richard, John Prine, John Mayall, Brenda Lee, Roger McGuinn, Bonnie Raitt, Roy Orbison, John Fogerty, Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton and Bob Seger, just to name a few! Don’t miss a chance to come see these two fantastic players strut their stuff. Sunday Soul – Martha Redbone & The Sojourners – Sunday, Jan. 18 at the Native Sons Hall A double bill to die for! Martha Redbone’s music flows equally from her own unique, award-winning blend of Native American elements with funk, and her deep roots in Appalachian folk and Piedmont blues favoured by the matriarchy that raised her on a rich sojourn from Clinch Mountain, Virginia to Harlan County, Kentucky and beyond. She stole the show at MusicFest a couple of years ago and we are thrilled she’s coming back. The Sojourners are

Christmas Village another fundraising success Terry Farrell Record Staff
Odlum Brown’s 13th annual Christmas Village concluded on Wednesday night at the Comox Mall, with the announcement of the winning designs in both the gingerbread house and teddy bear categories. The Commercial Gingerbread Division was close enough for a recount, as Blackfin Pub edged the Olaf Winter Wonderland (Independent Grocers) by two votes to take top spot. The Blackfin design was, indeed, a gingerbread replica of the popular Comox eatery. Olaf’s Winter Wonderland was a replica of a scene from the Disney movie Frozen – a co-creation of Independent Grocer chef Laura Barnes and her daughter, Jessica. Smitty’s “Santa’s Nautical Express” rounded out the top three. In the Children’s Gingerbread Division, Ella and Maggie Wilson took home the first-place ribbon for their “Santa’s Surf Shack”. The Engisch children placed sec-
ond with their creation, “Santa’s Arrival,” and five-year-old Presley placed third for “Presley’s Magical Christmas.” In the Teddy Bear Division, Little Lily Tutu took home top honours. The Home Hardware Bear placed second and WestJet’s Captain Kyle & Kelly Love rounded out the top three. The WestJet entry was also the top money raiser in the silent auction, with a winning bid of $2,100. The Comox Valley Aboriginal Head Start Preschool won the Gingerbread House People’s Choice Award, while the Teddy Bear People’s Choice Award went to Goldilocks and The Three Bears – an intricate display, complete with a wardrobe of doll-sized clothes, all handmade, right down to the hangers upon which the clothes were hung. A total of $14,300 was raised in the fundraising event, making the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Comox Valley Child Development Association the biggest winners. The two groups split all the proceeds 50/50.

Sharks smash club records at junior swim meet The Comox Valley Aquatic Club Sharks attended their first international junior championship swim meet in Portland, Ore. on Dec. 12-14. The Sharks in attendance were Jordyn Ryan, Juliana Bartemucci, Ben Neufeld, Cole Young and Brooke Lamoureux. This competition is known to attract top Canadian and international athletes. The fast-paced competition ensured athletes needed their best form during preliminary sessions to qualify top 16 to compete in finals. Day 1 saw Ryan narrowly miss the top 16 in the 200 breaststroke although in the process she smashed the current Sharks club record. Lamoureux (400 free) and Neufeld (50 backstroke) both qualified for the A final with new club records and saw Neufeld qualify for the Canadian trials early next spring. Day 2 started with Ryan improving her own club record, in the 400 Individual Medley, to qualify 10th and then smashing her record by almost five seconds in the final. This was followed by Bartemucci posting a personal best in the 200 free.
Day 3 proved to be one of the most exciting days of racing with Young tying another competitor, leading to a nail-biting swim-off during the finals. Both Ryan and Lamoureux qualified top eight in the 200 butterfly, each breaking the club record and then tying each other in the final. The highlight of the night belonged to Lamoureux, finishing fifth overall in the 800 freestyle and qualifying for Canadian trials, the highest level of competition. The Sharks thank Bayview Chiropractic and Coastal Physiotherapy for their strong and on-going sponsorship and support. Together they, along with our greater Sharks’ community of support, helped these competitors to set 20 club records at this meet. Community support of our local amateur athletes is key in the development of healthy and successful kids. If you are interested in finding out more about opportunities for your child to swim with the Sharks or want to know about sponsorship opportunities contact us at www.sharks. bc.ca. – Comox Valley Aquatic Club Sharks

It certainly wasn’t easy, but the Young Guns were locked and loaded just enough to out-snipe the rival Misfits and prevail as dodgeball champions. The two teams battled to a 10-8 result, as the Young Guns took their second straight ‘A Tier’ championship in the Comox Valley Sports & Social Club’s recreational dodgeball league. Team captains Josh Maurice and Nick Zsiros continue to prove themselves hard to beat in dodgeball, excelling at the upper levels of the sport with a combination of elite dodging agility, great throwing arms and strategy. The win capped a nearly undefeated season for the Young Guns in the eight-team tier. They rebounded from losing their final regular season game 10-8 to the 10 Phat Kids, before rattling off playoff wins against the

The CV Kickers eventually emerged as champs, winning 10-9 over The Rock, whose only other loss of the season also came against the Kickers in the first week. My practice is about more than just tax. It’s about building your business, understanding the difficulties that you’re facing and finding real solutions. Solutions that lead to growth. I’ve been part of the management team of a growing business for the last decade, and I’ve seen the challenges that business owners run into every day. If you own a business and find yourself thinking that there has to be a better way, we should talk. And of course, I do taxes too.

July continued to be generous for saltwater anglers as the lakes begin to feel the results of a very hot, dry summer. Local anglers were enjoying one of the most successful chinook salmon fisheries out of Kitty Coleman that old-timers were calling one of the best ever. August was a rich month for marine anglers. Pink salmon showed up in the Campbell System and other pink bearing rivers along with superb beach fishing for these
exciting little twoyear salmon. It was a bonanza for beach and river anglers whether you fished with lures or flies. Chinook salmon continued to be plentiful and some coho showed up in local waters. Sockeye salmon were in some catches but the huge run was not in local waters. The long spell of dry hot weather was beginning to be a concern for local stream

chum salmon fishing. In general the chum salmon fishing was a disappointment for most anglers. November brought successful deer hunting for this columnist thanks to the generosity of local farmers who gave me permission to hunt on their property. A column on the disappearing Comox Glacier and climate change raised questions. December closed with successful flounder and crab trip almost identical to opening trip. Closed the year with smoked fish and holiday treats of wild bounty. We face serious challenges in 2015. e have reached the end of another year. When an outdoors person approaches a new territory it is not a bad idea to look back over the trail you have just journeyed. The current year, 2014, had some highs and lows and as we leave it, this column will look at some highlights. January started with a challenging outing on Spider Lake which was partially covered with ice. This was followed by a trip to fish flounders and crabs off Savary Island; which we also ended the season with this year. The month closed with another of the endless articles I have written on Maple Lake; which is still muddled in small town politics. February touched on the joys of childhood in the outdoors. Looked at the importance of Baynes Sound and the threatening reality of climate change as Area 14 waters become too acidic for a scallop operation off Deep Bay. March reported on the importance of the annual Pacific Herring spawn in Baynes Sound that is truly one of the great gifts of a healthy Pacific Ocean to our local waters. I reported on the deep connections anglers have with the waters they fish and having a successful day without catching fish. April was celebrated with excellent trips on saltwater for flounders and prawns and freshwater for trout. May opened with a successful saltwater trip in Area 14 waters where we landed rockfish, lingcod and chinook salmon. The month closed with a successful trip for salmon in local waters that featured taking seniors fishing. I also reported on local folks fishing in South America and Bermuda. June was a wonderful month filled with Courtenay and District Fish and Game Club (CDFGPA) Annual Outdoor Show, Family Fishing Weekend and the club-sponsored Fishing Forever Program. It was also a month when limit catches of chinook salmon were being taken in local waters and prawn fishing was equally as successful. When you add the freshwater component with excellent trout fishing we truly live in a bountiful land.

Light over darkness
C
hristmas is a celebration of peace and goodwill that has been embraced by cultures worldwide – and for good reason. While many Christians choose to mark Dec. 25 specifically as the birth of Jesus – one of the keystones of Christian faith – the festivities surrounding the date have underlying themes that are universal for all humans without hate in their hearts. While Hanukkah (Dec. 16 to Dec. 24) commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem after a successful revolt in the second century BC, in a broader, symbolic sense the lighting of the menorah represents the triumph of light over dark, of good over evil and injustice. And while Kwanzaa (Dec. 26 to Jan.1) was created in 1965 to celebrate African-American and Pan-African culture, its avowal of traditional principles of unity, family, brotherhood and contribution to community through work and creativity can serve as an inspiration to many others, whatever their heritage. There are other celebrations in December – some well-known, others obscure, some humourous or downright iconoclastic. But all, on some level, are about goodwill and a commitment to shared values. There are plenty of signs that the spirit of Christ is back in Christmas (if He ever left) – some of them from other cultures who have no problem with the existence of a Christian celebration. And while some will look around and decry signs of a commercialized, materialistic Christmas, it’s evident that most ordinary people these days are doing their best to strive for a balance, to check runaway expenditure and concentrate on celebrating the really important things, like home and family – or extended family – and good fellowship. We have enough evidence of misfortune around us to make us value the blessings we have and not the material goods we covet. Most of us feel it is well to pause at this time, at the end of the year, to ponder and re-commit to principles that are central to all races and religions, that are held dear by both the spiritual and those who consider themselves atheistic or agnostic. Particularly at times when bad news and grim headlines can bring us to the brink of despair, we need messages of positivity and the simple understanding that others share our fundamental good will and desire for a better, brighter world. –Peace Arch News Record Question of the Week This week: It appears most people have ditched the traditionalist angle when it comes to Christmas trees. Only 26.3 per cent of respondents say they bought a real Christmas tree this year. Next week: Did you overspend this Christmas? Go to www.comoxvalleyrecord.com to vote.

Pondering a New Year’s resolution? Give blood Dear editor, Come on Comox Valley - try this for a collective New Year’s resolution. How would you like to make a resolution that: costs you nothing; makes you feel good; may save your life. Sound easy? Sound good? It is:
Give blood. We could start a trend and become the donation capital of B.C. How about having a ‘Coming of Age’ donation day in our schools every year for our grad classes and encourage a lifetime of giving in our kids. (The mini-
mum age for donating blood is 17.) It’s easy, it feels good, but it’s deadly serious. After all, you or one of your family may need to be on the receiving end one day. If you can, please give. Anne MacNicoll, Courtenay

This aerial view taken in January of 2012 shows the clearcutting on the other side of Mount Washington. Photo Submitted surface in the area a little at that time. It made the road safer and if it flooded, as soon as the water level receded the road drained. As logging declined and forests regrew, there was little or no flooding in the area. That is the only thing that changed, we still had winter storms, Dyke Road has always been there. There has been more building in the area, I agree. We now are experiencing flooding again. What has changed? We are still having

winter storms, Dyke Road is still there, it has not been changed. Logging is again taking place at unprecedented levels. The areas that have been logged since 2009 are equivalent to the area that Comox Logging/Crown Zellerbach took over 40 years to log, I would say. All you have to do is drive in the Comox/Willemar Lake/Browns/Tsolum River areas to see recent logging. A plane trip over the area would give a better view. The internet would also
provide similar views. I would think if the statistics could be reviewed of the amount of area logged in the watershed mentioned, and the amount flooding that had taken place at various times, a case could be easily made to compare the area logged to the amount of flooding. Common sense tells me that, the less ground cover there is, the quicker the water will flow. Frank Carter Cumberland

Dear editor, I would like to comment on the article titled, Recent flood re-ignites clear-cutting debate (Dec. 16 Comox Valley Record) I too believe the logging that is taking place in the local area’s watersheds is the reason we are now having flooding problems in the Lewis Park/Old Island Highway/Lower Headquarters areas. My experience comes from the many years I spent maintaining the highways in the Comox Valley area. In the 1970s, the Cliffe Avenue/Fifth Street Bridge/ Old Island Highway route to Campbell River and the route to the Powell River ferry came under the provincial government’s responsibility. It was before the 17th Street Bridge was built. Plus the Inland Highway had not been built at that time. It was when logging was still being carried out in local watersheds. At this time we did experience a lot of flooding in the aforementioned areas. The Department of Highways at the time replaced the old wooden bin wall that was along the river bank with a cement block wall and self-draining cement barrier. We may have raised the road

Gift ideas for small businesses Dear Santa, In 2014, small business has continued to work hard to support B.C. communities. We provide jobs for over a million people, representing 55 per cent of private-sector employment. We pay taxes to all levels of government. We do our best to abide by the plethora of rules coming from government too. As you have taught us, it’s important to believe. And we have remained optimistic in the face of adversity and global uncertainty. In fact, B.C. businesses are the most optimistic in the country. Every day, we serve and support customers to justify their confidence and support. We value our employees and we give as generously as we can to local causes, including sports teams and Christmas events in your honour. We hope you agree, Santa, that we have earned a spot on your nice list. In terms of presents, we’re not asking for much: 1. Our first wish is our most important — that customers continue to support us. 2. In 2005, the B.C. government gave us a gift when it agreed to respect any written tax advice, even if it is wrong. This is critical protection against an auditor telling us we owe money for following bad government advice. 3. Speaking of taxes, the return of the PST has been challenging for many of us. If you could talk to somebody about giving further consideration to reducing the PST rate, that would help improve
productivity, keep prices down and wages up. 4. Santa, are the rumours of elf shortages true? We understand they are starting to retire, and refilling jobs is challenging. We too, are struggling with labour shortages and have on our list a better Temporary Foreign Worker Program. We would like to change the program so it creates a pathway to permanent residency for people wanting to live and work in Canada because, like you, we don’t need temporary help, we need permanent help. 5. This last wish may be the hardest. We don’t know what kind of connections you might have, but could you see what you can do about putting a freeze on property tax increases for next year? This may not be an issue at the North Pole, but we are struggling with the increasing cost of local government. Looking for stocking stuffers? Balanced budgets, provincial and federal, are always a big hit. Santa, please keep us in mind as we would put these gifts to good use to benefit all British Columbians. Happy Holidays, B.C. Small Businesses P.S. Thank you for the early Christmas gift of a five-year freeze on average credit card fees. P.P.S. We promise not to drink too much eggnog and to be nice to our kid sisters. Laura Jones, Canadian Federation of Independent Business.

Four awesome cars that never sold in North America By Grant Stoecker
The U.S. and Canada might get a wide variety of unique and exotic cars, but there are a few cars that never made it to our showrooms and appear now only as special imports. 1972 Lancia Stratos HF – The Lancia Stratos HF is a monster of car. In the concept stages, the Stratos was an attempt by Bertone to get its foot in with Lancia, who had previously worked with Pinin Farina for

2 design. The legend states that Bertone re-bodied a Lancia Fulvia and drove it to Lancia’s headquarters. Impressed with the Stratos prototype, Lancia agreed to collaborate with Bertone to create their next generation rally car. The Stratos was built around a Lancia chassis, with a Ferrari Dino engine positioned behind the seats. The rolling chassis was finished off with an aerodynamic body fitted by Bertone. The Lancia would go on to have a legendary career, winning the World Rally Championship from 1974-1976.

Meet the Chevrolet Firenza Can Am, a Euro-American mash-up that was never sold in either of those markets. Built to compete with Ford’s inferior Capri Perana, the Can Am began its existence in Britain as a Vauxhall Firenza frame, which was then shipped straight south to Port Elizabeth, where it was paired with a

course, Ford engineers weren’t satisfied with a compact coupe with 1.3-litre engine, so they contacted the blokes over at Cosworth and developed the Escort RS1600. While the Cosworth engine may have put out only 113 horsepower, the tiny Escort was barely tipping the scales at 1,800 pounds, making the RS1600 one of the coolest cars cruising the UK at the time. 1969 Nissan Skyline GT-R – The Nissan Skyline GT-R is arguably the most iconic sports car to ever come from the islands of Japan. most commonly idolized in its mid-›90s guise from the Fast & Furious franchise, our pick is the original — the 1969 Skyline GT-R. Introduced at the 1969 Tokyo Auto Show, the GT-R was a Nissan Skyline sedan that was stripped out and given the special treatment by the boys in the Nissan Skunks Works team. The heart of the GT-R is a Nissan racing V-6 engine putting out 160 horsepower, allowing the GT-R to outrun its European rivals. Other cool upgrades included wide wheel arches, rally wheels, and front and rear spoilers.
