Patrice Gordon feeds a baby being treated for Ebola. Many of the children in Sierra Leone’s Kenema treatment centre have lost their parents and their family members. Patients rally around the children who have lost their families, making for an upbeat environment. Gordon is wearing her protective gear with her name written on her forehead to distinguish her from other care providers.

Working as a nurse usually means treating patients in a hospital or a clinic, but not for Patrice Gordon. The Rossland-based nurse practitioner is spending four weeks in Kenema, Sierra Leone, treating West Africans who have the contagious and lethal Ebola virus. Every day in the treatment centre brings new patients and new volunteers, but there are pieces of Gordon’s day that become routine. On a typical morning, she wakes to an update on how her patients fared through the night. “We start out the day with rounds, and everyone learns about what has happened since we had last been there,” she said in a phone interview from the Kenema Treatment Centre. “Often, we hear about who has died overnight, who has been admitted, and the general condition of the patients.” She quickly memorizes the patient notes before moving

on to direct treatment. To do that, Gordon has to take all precautions to protect her from any chance of becoming infected with Ebola. She puts on an airtight suit, and with 40 C weather, procedure says that she can only be in her personal protective equipment (PPE) for one hour at a time – drastically limiting face-to-face interaction with patients. Once she has suited up, she heads into the treatment area and begins symptom management. There is no cure for the Ebola virus, so the care providers at the centre focus on treating patients for their individual symptoms, making the immune system strong enough to fight the disease. After the hour of working directly with patients, Gordon has to take a break, resting and hydrating for a few hours before going back in to do another round through the patient beds. Restricted time in the suits doesn’t stop her from keeping spirits up and getting updates on patients, but this time, from a safe distance.

“We spend an immense amount of time encouraging (the patients) and talking to them about how they are doing,” she said. “Even though the patients are on the other side of avalanche fencing with a ditch in the middle, we stand at the fence and talk to them. A lot of it is about keeping hope alive.” Gordon says the patients are also banding together, despite being complete strangers. One infant lost her mother, and patients in the treatment centre took her under their wing, making sure she had medication and enough to drink. “There is so much compassion that we see passing between patients and between the care providers and the patients,” she described. “There is a lot of care taking that goes on.” After each shift, Gordon makes notes about what happened during her day – her way of remembering and honouring those she has come across in the treatment centre.

Nurse practioner and Rossland resident Patrice Gordon receives help getting suited up before heading into the Kenema Ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone to care for patients.

Treating Ebola patients continued from page A2

“There is no time really to process (the work) emotionally as you are moving through the day,” she said. “We each have our own ways of navigating this and my technique is, after every shift, I write all the cases down. It gives, and shows, them some respect outside of providing care. It does something for me and allows me to process through the really tough stuff.”

The idea that internationally, people are caring about them, is so powerful

this

When her notes are finished, Gordon is nearing the end of the day. It has been exhausting, hot, humid and emotionally taxing work, but every night, she makes a point to talk to her loved ones back in Rossland before heading to bed. “I Skype chat with my sons and my boyfriend and I even got to listen to my dog snore on Skype,”

she said, laughing. “That was pretty fun.” Keeping in touch with friends and family in B.C. makes the distance between West Africa and B.C. seem a little smaller. “It definitely makes (being away) easier,” she said.” It is certainly important to them, and my days are sometimes so busy and tiring, that it is tempting to just fall into bed, but then when I talk to them, I feel that I have had that grounding and I am reassured that they are all okay at home, too.” Maintaining a connection to home doesn’t just help Gordon with her day-to-day work, but also the patients she is treating. She shares the messages and well wishes she gets from home every night, boosting morale and keeping hearts hopeful. “The idea that internationally, people are caring about them, is so powerful,” she said. “I talk to them about what I have received in the way of emails and Facebook messages overnight from people around the world. You tell them that everyone is pulling for them – not just in Sierra Leone.” After a long day of treating patients, keeping a positive attitude and dealing with emotional stresses, Gordon hits the hay to prepare to do it all over again. “It is hard, hot work, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else on the planet.”

Knot your traditional classroom activity Students in the trades programs at Selkirk College’s Silver King Campus were fit to be tied last week as they squared-off in the annual Knot Tying Competition. The fifth annual pre-Christmas event had teams of students from the Millwright/Machinist Program, Welding Program and Carpentry Foundation Program manipulating rope as more than 100 of their peers cheered them on. “The purpose at its heart is to properly learn some knots for rigging and you throw a little competition in there to add some excitement,” said carpentry foundation instructor Dan Brazeau. “It’s also nice to bring some of the trades programs together and it gets the students socializing a little more outside the small circle of their class.”

It’s also nice to bring some of the trades programs together and it gets the students socializing a little more outside the small circle of their class. Teams of three stepped up to earn their program the bragging rights. Students earned points for their program by beating other competitors in timed heats that had them tying seven different kinds of knots including bowline, timber, figure eight, carrick and clove. “We started practicing our knots in the first week of school, so we had a bit

Carpentry foundation program students (from left to right) James Stone, Jeff Shaw and Jack Sturrup claimed the annual Knot Tying Competition at Selkirk College’s Silver King Campus.

“I had absolutely no idea how to tie anything before starting this program,” said Shaw. “We do it every morning before we start class, so you catch on.” The focus of the competition is fun, but Brazeau said there is an important educational element involved. “I started doing it as part of the curriculum,” said Brazeau, who has been teaching at Selkirk College for four

of head start,” said carpentry toundation student Jeff Shaw, who came from Calgary in September to attend Selkirk College. Shaw and classmates James Stone and Jack Sturrup ended up narrowly defeating the welding program team to claim the trophy. Shaw said before arriving in Nelson four months ago, he hadn’t put much thought into tying knots.

Building a new life through a Selkirk College education CASTLEGAR – When Pammy Uppal moved from India 10 years ago to start a new life in Canada, she looked to The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) and Selkirk College to help her with the challenging transition. Today, Uppal and her husband own three thriving Cuisine of India restaurants in Castlegar, Cranbrook and Vernon. With two young children, the 29-year-old is managing to balance family life, work life and finishing up her two-year Business Administration diploma at Selkirk College. Thriving in her new home, Uppal credits both CBAL and the regional college for helping provide the building blocks of success. “Selkirk College is a great place to be,” she says. “I love Selkirk College… I have learned what I needed to know and all the instructors are great, they devote themselves 100 per cent. You get full value for the time you spend here.” Canada Offers New Challenges Uppal grew up in a small community in India where her father was a farmer. When she was 19, Uppal moved to Canada to start a new life with her new husband. “I was excited to move to Canada,” she says. “I only really knew what my relatives who lived here told me, they used to travel to India every year and I was inspired. They told me it was clean, very little crime and a good political system.” Looking to find a community where they could plant their culinary culture, Uppal and her husband discovered Castlegar and opened their first Cuisine of India a decade ago. Though she took English in high school and was working towards completing a degree in Commerce via correspondence from an Indian university, Uppal was directed towards CBAL

as the right resource to brush up on her communication skills. “My biggest problem was with speaking because I never practiced it,” she says. “It was difficult to speak at first, but once I knew that people understood what I was saying it was encouraging.” Setting the Stage for Further Education With her English skills enhanced, Uppal spent the next few years raising her family and building the business. In 2010, she wanted to take the next step in her educational journey with the Selkirk College Business Administration Program. In order to make it happen, Uppal decided to start with working towards her BC high school Dogwood Diploma and returned to Selkirk College’s Adult Basic Education Program (ABE).

Selkirk College is a great place to be,” she says. “I love Selkirk College… I have learned what I needed to know and all the instructors are great, they devote themselves 100 per cent. You get full value for the time you spend here. ABE provides adults the opportunity to take high school courses to enter a college program or work towards completing their Adult Dogwood Diploma. Uppal registered in math and science courses to complete her goals. “I had a really good expe-

rience with ABE at Selkirk College,” says Uppal. “The instructors were so kind and encouraging; whenever I needed a little bit of extra help it was there for me. It’s a great atmosphere to be in, there are a lot of students from different backgrounds that are working on improving their education and their opportunities.” Like so many who enrol in ABE courses through Selkirk College, Uppal found the instructors provided the right tools for adult learners. She singled out Castlegar Campus math instructor Brad McVittie as a teacher who helped provide an extra spark. “Brad was the greatest instructor I ever had, better than any of my Indian instructors,” she says. “I never understood math as well

as when I learned it here.” Building a Business and Expanding Knowledge Uppal is in the final stretch of the Business Administration Program. Focussing on accounting as her specialty, she has one semester left and will graduate in the Spring. “It was hard coming back and that acted as a barrier, it took me a little bit longer when I first came back to do the ABE courses,” she says. “But now in the Business Administration Program, I have taken what I have learned with how to study and applied it which has helped me a lot.” With Cuisine of India thriving in the three communities— where they employ 20 part-time and full-time staff—Uppal and her husband are looking at open-

ing up more locations in the future. “People really appreciate our restaurant and we have been successful here,” she says. Looking back, Uppal says she will be forever grateful for the educational experiences that were provided in her community. “Selkirk College is a great start,” says Uppal. “If you have recently come to Canada, the ESL program and ABE program helps you interact with other people who are a from a similar background. You make friends and make connections that provide you a good start and end up being lasting.” Learn more about the Selkirk College Adult Basic Education Program at selkirk.ca/program/ abe.

Alexandra Straub For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!” Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby. Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit. Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can find her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either find her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks. Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra at alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Eightieth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Green City, a ghost town on the north fork of the Salmo River, seven miles north of Erie, was essentially the same place as Craigtown, which we’ve previously covered. The latter, established in 1897 by Robert W. Craig (1845?), and also known as Craig’s Camp and Craig City, failed to go anywhere, but this didn’t deter George Hopkins Green (1861-1932) from trying again. He hired Henry B. Smith, who also laid out Castlegar, Columbia City, and Fort Sheppard, to survey the Green City townsite. Smith completed his work on July 21, 1902. The streets were called Green, Craig, Pine, Bernard, Edward, Clarence, Harold. One of George Green’s sons was named Edward, but it’s not clear where most of the other names came from. The Victoria Daily Colonist of August 6, 1902 noted the staking of new placer claims in the area: “Partly in consequence of this activity the old site of what has hitherto been known as Craigtown has been surveyed and divided into town lots. The town is to be known as the Green City.” Clara Graham wrote in Kootenay Mosaic: “Just before the turn of the [20th] century, George H. Green staked some mineral claims at this location which was in an area containing an excellent growth of very fine timber with plenty of water power at hand. This would be an ideal location for a settlement, thought the owner and so he formed a syndicate, the Green City Gold Mining, Smelting and Development Co. Ltd. … Nothing tangible ever came of this undertaking.” The greatest flurry of activity appears to have been between 1911 and 1913. The Nelson Daily News of May 27, 1913 noted: “George Green of Rossland was in town lately visiting Green City. He purposes [sic] in the near future erecting a shingle mill there.” The 1921 BC civic directory still included an entry for Craigtown, “also known as Green City.” A late reference appeared in a photo caption in Cominco Magazine, October 1948: “There’s always a good demand for … the white tail deer. This one was bagged at Green City near Salmo.” George Green was born and educated in Wingham, Ont. He moved to Seattle and then to Rossland in the early 1890s, where he opened the Spokane, Grand Union, Hoffman and Allan hotels. In 1920 he took over the Arlington hotel in Trail and also owned a grocery store and apartment block. According to his obituary, Green once refused an offer of $100,000 for the timber on his townsite, “holding it for the development he hoped to inaugurate. Mr. Green had a pioneer’s hopes for Green City, but they were never realized.” No ore was ever shipped from his claims. Green died in Trail at 71, survived by his wife, three children, and four siblings.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS

PETS on PARADE KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Tis the season in B.C. and as British Columbians gear up to celebrate; the Trail Regional BC SPCA is reminding pet guardians that the holidays can be hazardous for pets. “We want everyone to enjoy the holidays, including the furry members of your family,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of community relations for the BC SPCA. Holiday pet safety tips include: • Bones are Bad: Avoid giving bones to your dogs or cats, particularly turkey bones. Poultry bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations. • Thoughtful Treats: Chocolate and other sweets should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs, though not harmful to humans. The best thing you can do for your pet over the holidays is to keep them on their regular diet. Look for healthy animal treats instead of giving your animal companions cookies, rich snacks or sweets meant for people. • Poisonous Plants: Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals including mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper and Christmas rose. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets – especially birds. Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or

people. This has been a long-standing rumour perpetuated for decades. Some pets may have a sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant and may get diarrhea or vomit. • Tinsel is Trouble: Having a Christmas tree and pets can be troublesome. Ensure the tree is well-secured and try to place the decorations above paw height. Using string to hang decorations instead of hooks helps, as hooks can be easily dislodged. If possible, use non-breakable ornaments. Avoid using tinsel or angel hair – cats and dogs will ingest both, which can cause intestinal problems. Cords for lights should be made inaccessible to pets, especially chewing puppies and exploring kittens. If you add chemicals to the water reservoir of your Christmas tree to help it last longer, keep in mind those chemicals are toxic to animals and keep the reservoir covered. • Toy Watch: Avoid purchasing pet toys with small or soft pieces that can be chewed and swallowed. Nylon bones tend to splinter less than plastic ones. Be sure to inspect pet toys regularly and discard deteriorating ones. The Trail Regional BCSPCA would also like to express many thanks this year to the community, donors, volunteers and all supporters of the Trail BCSPCA. We wouldn’t have had such a great year without you all and we know next year will be just as successful!

Happy Holidays!!
