Pair strapped 10 kilograms of jewelry to legs Smugglers fined $10,000 each and jailed eight days; may need to pay $174,848 for return of goods by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter There’s good news and bad news for two men who each strapped five kilograms of jewelry worth $1.59 million to their legs last month following a flight to Vancouver from Hong Kong. Despite smuggling $1,589,530 worth of jewelry, they were each fined just $10,000 after pleading guilty to smuggling, and jailed only eight days. The bad news is that they might need to pay up to $174,848 to get the smuggled jewelry back. Michael David Chan and Bo Kwok Siu pled guilty in Richmond provincial court to an offence under the Customs Act. They flew into Vancouver International Airport on Nov. 20 on a flight from Hong Kong. Canada Border Services officers, acting on a tip that a traveller appeared to be concealing goods around his ankles, approached Chan and referred him for a secondary examination. That’s when they discovered six packages of jewelry were strapped to his
legs underneath his pants. The packages contained hundreds of pieces of jewelry with a combined weight of five kilograms. Chan was arrested, but the investigation continued. Investigators realized that Chan was not travelling alone, and gathered information that his companion may have smuggled jewelry in the same way as Chan. They eventually located Bo Kwok Siu who was staying at a local hotel. Members of Canada Border Services’ criminal investigations unit arrested Siu at the hotel and he admitted to hiding jewelry within the hotel room. Investigators were granted a search warrant and found the jewelry— weighing five kilograms—hidden in a garbage bin. The total commercial value for duty of the jewelry was $346,696, but the retail appraised value of the jewelry was $1,589,530. In addition to the fines, they must also pay a civil penalty for the return of the jewelry, ranging from 25 per cent to 80 per cent of the commercial value for duty of the seized goods. “As a result of the diligence of our border services and criminal investigations officers, this case has come to a successful conclusion,” said Lucky Paul, chief of criminal investigations for the Canada Border Services Agency. “(When) someone smuggles jewelry into Canada we recognize that it puts legitimate business at a competitive disadvantage.”

Celebrate New Year’s Eve in Richmond Plenty of party options in the Island City, including salute to Canadian music by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter
W
hat happens when you put the Northern Pikes, the Grapes of Wrath and the Odds together in the same room? A party happens. It might be a Saskatoon-saluting, litigation-loving, power-pop performing kind of party, but it’s a party nonetheless.
The three Canadian bands will all perform at the River Rock Show Theatre to ring in 2015—just one of many entertainment options in Richmond on New Year’s Eve. The Northern Pikes formed three decades ago, finding fans with their album Big Blue Sky. The record featured the hit singles “Teenland,” “Things I Do For Money” and “Dancing In A Dance Club.” More hits followed, like “Wait For Me,” “She Ain’t Pretty” and “Dream Away.” The Grapes of Wrath earned success around the same time the Pikes were born. Their first album was September Bowl of Green. A few years later, in 1989, they released their most commercially successful album Now and Again, which featured the hit single “All The Things I Wasn’t.” But they became less grape and more wrath in 1992 when they disbanded. In 2010, three founding members Chris Hooper, Tom Hooper and Kevin Kane reunited. Odds were also born in the ‘80s, but took until 1991 to debut with singles “Love is the Subject” and “King of the Heap.” Their followup album, Bedbugs, featured the hits “Heterosexual Man” and “It Falls Apart.” Other Odds songs locals can’t avoid on Canadian radio: “Eat My Brain” and “Someone Who’s Cool.” Tickets, $39.50 to $49.50 (plus charges), at ticketmaster.ca or 1-855-985-5000. If Canadian rock and folk music won’t do, there’s other local New Year’s Eve options to consider. •Dine and dance with Dal: The ageless and legendary music man Dal Richards will be in Richmond again this New Year’s Eve. He’ll join his orchestra inside the Fraser Room at River Rock Casino Resort for his traditional year-end bash. The big band dinner dance is a tradition for Richards, who has performed every New Year’s Eve throughout his long career. His first New Year’s gig was at the Palomar Supper Club in 1938. Two years later, Richards was performing at the Panorama Roof at Hotel Vancouver—a date he kept for many years. The evening starts at 7 p.m. with a buffet dinner. Dancing, party favours and a champagne toast at midnight are all part of the package. Single tickets might still be available. Cost is $99.50, plus charges, and available at ticketmaster.ca or 1-855-985-5000 •Party at a pub: Richmond has a bevy of local pubs keen to quench customers’ thirst and answer their call for entertainment on New Year’s Eve. At Legends Pub and Restaurant, 9031 Blundell Rd., staff are hosting a no-cover party led by DJ Kyle. Kingswood Pub, 9371 No. 5 Rd., will host a no-cover night of karaoke, along with prizes, midnight buffet and champagne. •Join a booze battle: The Pumphouse Taproom, 6031 Blundell Rd., is hosting a Long Table Dinner with a twist—pitting beer against wine. Four Winds Brewery and Laughing Stock Winery will be represented at this five-course meal, that includes champagne and party favours. Dinner starts at 8 p.m.; music starts at 10 p.m. Tickets are $50.
The Grapes of Wrath, whose three founding members— Chris Hooper, Tom Hooper and Kevin Kane—reunited in 2010 will be in Richmond for New Year’s Eve.
•Go Goan: The Goan Overseas Association will again hold its New Year’s Eve ball at the Executive Airport Plaza Hotel, 7311 Westminster Hwy. Tickets are $25 to $95. Dress fancy. Doors open at 7 p.m., dinner is at 8 p.m. More information at goavancouver.com. •Keep it crazy: Gateway Theatre is presenting the modern Gershwin musical Crazy For You on the MainStage throughout December—including a New Year’s Eve show at 8 p.m. Bachelor Bobby Child begrudgingly works at the family bank while he plugs away at his theatre career, but after he’s forced to foreclose on a property in the middle of nowhere, Bobby finds that his love of theatre and the love of his life are waiting for him in the most unlikely of places. Tickets, $20 to $48, at gatewaytheatre.com or 604-270-1812. •Catch a flick: Richmond’s only movie theatre SilverCity Riverport, at 14211 Entertainment Way (604-277-5993), will have all the popular picks screening on New Year’s Eve. Just don’t expect The Interview. •Eat out: Many restaurants in Richmond are offering a special holiday dinner menu on New Year’s Eve, often with champagne or party favours included in the price. Kove Kitchen (3900 Bayview St.), Fresh Restaurant & Lounge at the Radisson (8181 Cambie Rd.), CAVU at the Hilton (5911 Minoru Blvd.), Chop Steakhouse & Bar (10251 St Edwards Dr.) are just a few local eateries serving festive meals. Some spots also include dancing. Call for reservations. •Swim with sharks: Shark Club Richmond is hosting a celebration featuring DJ EXQZT at 10331 St. Edwards Dr. For $59 customers will get a bottle of bubbly and four Red Bulls. Should be a long night. •Cruise on the Canada Line: TransLink will again offer free fares from 5 p.m. Dec. 31 to 5 a.m. Jan. 1. The last Canada Line train leaves Waterfront at 2:05 a.m. to YVR and 2:15 a.m. to Richmond-Brighouse.

Local Christmas bird count poised for top spot Ladner-South Richmond species count, although lower than last year, could still be No. 1 by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter In the annual wintertime birder battle that pits the Fraser delta against Victoria, it appears the locals have won. Avian enthusiasts participating in the Ladner Christmas bird count, which includes South Richmond, counted 141 species during the day-long count Sunday, Dec. 21. Its chief rival of Victoria has a preliminary count number of 140. “We had a good time. We had a lot of good people out there, and wound up with some rare birds,” said Jude Grass, co-ordinator for the Ladner count. Meanwhile the Dec. 14 Vancouver count, which includes north Richmond, recorded 132 species. Both local counts— whose numbers are still preliminary—are lower than last year. The Ladner-South Richmond count peaked at 146 species last year, while Vancouver-North Richmond reached 133 birds. Grass said her count had good weather— with the day starting cloudy, before sunshine and warm temperatures moved in. “I overheard birders say I overdressed for the day,” she said. Hundreds of bird counts take place across North America every year from Dec. 14 to Jan 5.
Data collected by birders helps scientists track winter bird populations and identify species in need of conservation. Fair skies last Sunday allowed the LadnerSouth Richmond counters to spot some rare feathered friends, including the Townsend’s solitaire—a bird that hails from the same family as the robin, and isn’t usually seen here in winter. Other rare sightings: palm warbler, two western scrub-jays and a bunch of Anna’s hummingbirds. “A lot of people have been putting up feeders, and our winters have been pretty mild,” said Grass, explaining the hummingbird spotting. “They’re pretty tough little birds, and I think they’re staying here to protect their habitat.” Another unusual find: six owls in a single day. But a common sight

here, the snowy owl, was no where to be found. “That’s still a good number. A lot of those were out at the Reifel bird sanctuary (in Ladner).” This year’s Christmas Bird Count is the 115th
annual, making it the longest running wildlife census in the world. Grass has been involved in the count for 38 years, and in that time she’s seen interest in birding only grow. Said Grass: “It’s become more of a hobby

f you may be watching more television than usual over the next week or two, you may want to consider the two-season Canadian series Don’t Drive Here. It’s a documentary on the Discovery Channel that is part travelogue and part ‘how to’ drive weird and often not so wonderful two-, three-, four- and more-wheeled vehicles in some of the most traffic congested, roadrules-free cities around the world. The program has impressed some commentators and reviewers as humorous in a Canadian sort of way. No doubt this has a lot to do with the host, the exuberant Andrew Younghusband whose antics that are fun to watch. He sweeps you up into his quest to try and learn to drive like a local in cities that top the lists of worst places to drive in the world. In these places most tourists with any interest in self-preservation must by sheer effort of will resign themselves to being driven. Trying to do what Mr. Younghusband does is unthinkable. Hence the suggestion: Don’t Drive Here …okay, but just watch me try it! Otherwise it is difficult to see the humour in the conditions you will see and vicariously experience. And the way in which these conditions are described and revealed and explored is puzzling. The underlying premise is that driving in these cities is extremely risky and unsafe in comparison with driving in our cities, but then, instead of challenging this premise by modeling at least an attempt
at safe driving, Mr. Younghusband invariably succeeds and survives by adapting. This makes for some hair-raising moments. In Rome, for example Mr. Younghusband interviews underage—at least by our licensing standards—drivers through the open windows of their cars while he is riding alongside them on a motorcycle. If you are the least concerned about the huge potential for any such side by side motoring chat to end disastrously, it’s hard to focus on the substance of the interview. Enough of this sort of thing and you start to feel that, paradoxically enough, the show somehow manages to present an alternative to our back-at-home risk-averse, strictly controlled use of our roadways. You may find yourself wondering whether we are missing something in abstaining from driving like a madman. But then, when the really sour note is hit and disaster ensues in traffic, the demand for safe driving is seen as incontrovertible. For example, a chat with a taxi driver about how many people he has seen killed on the road—“That many?”— put in sharp focus that what we are seeing is errant behavior. Don’t Drive Here is a species of ‘Reality TV’ and partakes of all the usual strangeness of this genre – perhaps repulsive, but also fascinating. Perhaps you can’t take your eyes of the obvious lunacy. Are you learning anything the least bit helpful to your dayto-day life experience? This is reality after all, as recorded and edited by a filmmaker. Shouldn’t there be some life lesson that justifies watching this sort of program? One answer is that with regard to a crazy driving documentary that focuses on other parts of the world, we are reminded to be grateful that we live in a country that generally has reasonable laws that are enforced fairly …by Cedric Hughes, Barrister & Solicitor with regular weekly contributions from Leslie McGuffin, LL.B.

Climate talks end 2014 in disarray
B.C. Views
Tom Fletcher
I
n case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure. This one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who were threatened with prosecution for defacing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert. These vast 1,500-year-old
petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. “Time for a change!” blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. I’ll say it’s time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list. Earlier there was the spectacle of Canada’s national media, reflexively denouncing Ottawa’s supposed inaction on greenhouse gases after U.S. President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise climate agreement with China in advance of Peru. “Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister,” chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley, joining other TV networks in falsely portraying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough. This non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is surrounded by a pile of chips and an
American flag. The U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where developing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use. China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, while lame-duck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions. Between them, the U.S. and China account for about half of global human-caused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canada’s share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those “tar sands” protests into perspective. Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission statistics, an event ignored by most media. “Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy
grew by 10.6 per cent over the same period,” the report states. B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima. There she met officials from California and other U.S. states to re-announce their modest efforts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wideeyed innocents might have been left with the mistaken impression that the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enormously thanks to shale oil and gas production. And California continues to produce, by its own state government measure, the most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America. Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of interest in reducing emissions, sales
of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell. I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on humancaused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes. Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony. But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action. I’ll discuss that next week. Family relations affect the Committee Relations among family members often affect how an elderly parent is looked after. If there is conflict, a Court may ultimately be called on to resolve the care issues.
Driver had a very good reason to be parking in a handicap spot Editor: Recently, I was waiting in the car while my daughter was doing gift shopping at the nearby electronics store. The car was parked at the handicap parking with the handicap decal displayed. The reason why I was staying in the car waiting is because my legs are so swollen that I cannot walk comfortably and easily. I am a patient with a terminal illness when I was diagnosed, I was told I only had until the end of 2013 to live. I and my family members
are working very hard so I can stay with them as long as possible. When my daughter was done with her shopping and boarded the car, a lady walked by our car and pointed to the ground said it is a handicap parking, we pointed at the handicap decal to let her know that we parked there with a valid reason. The lady kept on yelling at us and accused us that we did not qualify to park there even we have the decal because we look healthy. I don't understand how she can judge me as I was sitting in
the car. I am an Asian, a young woman—it does not mean I am abusing the system. My daughter was so upset and she said to the lady that “she (my mom) will probably die before you” and burst it into tears. We been working so hard and this naive lady just brought up an untouchable topic within our family and sorrow to us. Shame on me if I abuse the system—shame on you lady if you think you can be a judge without really knowing what is going on. C Chow Richmond
The Supreme Court was asked to appoint a Committee for their now incapacitated mother. Difficult though the choice was, the Court appointed the daughter who lived with her mother. The Court cited many factors for its decision, including the sisters’ conflict, their mother’s desire to continue living at home, medical opinions that supported the existing adult daycare programs for the mother, and that the other sister had not produced evidence supporting placing their mother in residential care. Conflict among siblings over their elderly parents’ care is not uncommon today. Courts are called on to resolve some of the disputes, expensive as it is, and they have considerable discretion in determining solutions. The main consideration is always the patients’ best interests. Visit our website (www.WillPowerLaw.com) or call us at (604)233-7001 to discuss your Wills, Estates and Seniors’ questions.

Paramedics don’t have the time to sit around Editor: Re: “How Richmond paramedics and firefighters spend their time,” Letters. I am writing in response to a letter that Scott Stewart wrote about how he was glad that firefighers and paramedics sit around their stations, so that they are ready to help when grandad has a heart attack. Being married to a paramedic, I know that this is the busiest time of the year for them. They literally go from one call to another and often don’t have time to eat. These professionals not only miss spending time with their families at Christmas, they also work under very stressful conditions all through the day and night to help others in a time of need. Thank you to all of them and may their nights be silent! Linda McGuire Richmond
Last week, reasons for judgment were released in the case Re Stewart, in which a widow had two daughters, who both were involved in her ongoing care. One lived with her (on Vancouver Island) and the other visited regularly, though not often, and kept in touch. The sisters’ relationship deteriorated over time, especially after one of them asked about certain bank withdrawals.

2014 car year in review It’s hard to believe that 2014 is over. Subaru WRX STI: Where did it go? At a time when we tend MSRP $37,995-$44,995 to reflect on what we’ve done, what we The all-new 2015 Subaru WRX STI is can do better and what was awesome, an incredible car within its own right. that brings me to my personal Car Year It has a cult following and has the in Review. street cred to back it up. And just when It takes a special vehicle or experience you think you’re getting the hang of by Alexandra Straub to stick in my memory. Not to say that putting it around the Buttonwillow short-term memory loss is a problem but Raceway in California, you let Tommi with constant streams of information bombarding Mäkinen take you for a spin. Gosh, it’s like he could my brain, it’s not hard to forget where I was and drive ten times faster, smoother and more confidently what I was testing a week ago! in his sleep. Heck, he had one arm on the windowsill Though this is a review of wheels past, because we when he wasn’t shifting or going into a tight corner. often test vehicles well ahead of their full production Moral of the story: the car makes you feel like a hero this also points to what people will be driving in even if you can’t drive like Tommi. And what a cool 2015. experience. Let’s start small because the micro cars might be Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat: miniscule in price, but aren’t about to disappoint. MSRP $63,495 (but the new 2015 Challenger SXT Nissan Micra: MSRP Range, $9,998-$15,748 starts at an MSRP of $28,495) For under $10K, this pint-sized vehicle can be yours. The name says it all. Put “Hell” in something and But just because it’s inexpensive doesn’t mean it’s you’re bound to have a helluva good time, right? cheap. And it’s a blast to drive. Sure, 109 horsepower Especially when you have 707 horsepower at your won’t get you where you need to go in a flash, but disposal. But to say I wasn’t apprehensive to take this that’s not the point of this car. Besides, for basic beast on the track at Portland International Raceway transportation, it has the goods. would be a lie. And the reason is, American muscle cars haven’t always been the pinnacle of exceptional Ford Fiesta 1.0L, $15,999 + $1,500 for the 1.0L option; for an MSRP of $17,499 handling dynamics. Sure, it has a lot of horses, but will it get me through the corner with minimal body roll? Ford’s smallest engine available here in Canada sure Or will the steering have enough feel that I won’t be packs a lot of punch. And considering it only weighs constantly inputting actions? 98 kg when assembled, this 1.0L, 3-cylinder powerIn this case? Hell(cat) yes. I was blown away as to plant is pretty impressive. If you opt for this bitehow well this car drove, not just on the track, but on sized engine, you’ll be getting 123 horsepower and the street, too. Disclaimer: if you need to get anywhere 125 lb-ft of torque (148 lb-ft with the overboost). The quickly, this isn’t the car for you. People will talk your Fiesta was designed and engineered in Europe so it ear off about it if you give them an opportunity. isn’t bad to look at either.
Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC: MSRP $37,200 (AMG version is $50,500) Another vehicle that shone brightly is Mercedes-Benz’s GLA. The luxury compact crossover starts at under $40K but does so many things well. It has a hatchback, great styling and the fuel economy is quite good, too. I wouldn’t even need the AMG version to keep me happy. It’s just a stellar vehicle. MINI Cooper S: MSRP starts at $25,490 Perhaps the biggest disappointment this year comes in the shape of the MINI Cooper S. I’ve loved these cars for so long, but perhaps electronics have ruined it for me. Yes, it’s much more competent and has some great features, but I miss the days of the supercharged version. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a super fun car to drive, but the downshift rev matching in the Cooper S with the manual transmission was not amazing. It was harsh and jerky. I also feel it lost a little bit of personality along its way to adulthood. I’ll forever love them, quirks and all. Honda Fit: MSRP range $14,495-$21,295 The Fit is on my list because I think it is just such a fabulous little car. The Magic Seats really are magic, but the new touchscreen is a huge deterrent. I strongly dislike it. I like buttons. I don’t mind if there are a few to complement the screen but I feel it takes my eyes off the road for too long, even if I’m familiar with the system.
Question of the Week The price of gas has dropped significantly in recent weeks. If you plan to buy a car this year will lower prices at the pump encourage you to buy a larger vehicle? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer. QUESTION

7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Home Up for Sale Richmond BC - A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market. As this report uncovers, most
homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1-800781-0942and enter 1000. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your tree may be brown after the holidays but you can still be green by recycling your festive fir. The City of Richmond offers multiple options to recycle your Christmas tree. Residents with curbside Green Cart collection may cut up and bundle trees and place it at the curbside on their regular collection day. The tree should be cut and bundled to a maximum size of three feet by two feet and four inches in diameter. Trees may also be dropped off at two different locations. The city’s Recycling Depot, located at 5555 Lynas Lane, accepts trees between 9 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. from Wednesday to Sunday. The depot is closed on statutory holidays. In addition, trees can be dropped off at Ecowaste Industries, which is located at 15111 Williams Rd. For hours of operation, call 604-277-1410 or visit www.ecowaste.com. You can keep the generous holiday spirit going by bringing your tree and a donation to Richmond Firefighters Association’s 28th annual Christmas tree chipping event. Firefighters will help return your tree to nature from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 and Sunday, Jan. 4 at Garry Point Park, on the corner of Moncton Street and 7th Avenue, or South Arm Community Centre, located at 8880 Williams Road. Donations will support seven local Richmond Firefighters Society charities. Please remember to remove all tinsel and decorations before recycling your tree so it can be created into new resources. For more information, visit www.richmond. ca/recycle, call 604-276-4010 or email garbageandrecycling@richmond.ca.

NEW TEETH FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The best reads of 2014
Book Club Shelley Civkin 2014 was a year of some stellar reads. Offering a big dose of suspense, Always Watching by B.C. author Chevy Stevens, was hands down, one of the most fast-paced thrillers I’ve read in ages. It’s about a psychiatrist who helps troubled people overcome their traumas. But the good doctor has a few of her own to deal with, too. Don’t Ever Get Old by Daniel Friedman is a hilarious mystery novel featuring 88-year-old Buck Schatz, a retired Memphis police detec-

tive and his grandson Tequila, who try to recover some stolen gold bars that vanished from Germany after the war. Doesn’t sound like a laugh fest, but trust me, grumpy old Buck is a riot. For something on the gritty side, there’s Anatomy of a Girl Gang by Ashley Little, which won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize this year. It’s the story of five teenage girls living on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, who form a gang. Very graphic, this novel offers a realistic and raw look at the vio-
lence and seediness of Canada’s poorest postal code. For lovers of the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child, there’s Personal, which in my estimation is far and away Child’s best mystery to date. In this lightning fast novel, Reacher is tasked with finding a world-class sniper who has tried to shoot the French president. The twist at the end will definitely throw you for a loop. Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult, takes the reader into the world of elephant sanctuaries

Best book of the year was about holiness and godness From Page 15 Between the elephant lore and the spirit world, the story builds layer upon layer, and
year. It’s the story of a 39-year-old widower who finds an abandoned baby in his bookstore, and falls in love with a much younger book sales rep, Amelia Loman. It’s about getting a second chance at love when you least expect it, and the writing is beyond beautiful. Interestingly, my favourite book of the year was the one I read most recently – In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist by Ruchama King Feuerman. This poignant novel features beautiful twenty-something Tamar; Isaac, a shy, middle aged religious Jewish man; Mustafa, a disabled Muslim who just wants to be loved; and Rebbe Yehuda, a mystical figure who offers advice and blessings to troubled souls in Jerusalem. This exceptionally moving story about holiness and goodness will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page. Happy reading everyone, and may 2015 be filled with good health and fabulous books for all!

Search-and-rescue group gets $12,000 donation Chevron Canada provides $10,000 cash for equipment, $2,000 in fuel credit The Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 10 received an early Christmas present last Friday. The volunteer-driven organization received a $12,000 boost from Chevron Canada, which will be used to support training and improve equipment for those who are ready at a moment’s notice to respond to marine emergencies in and around Steveston. The donation comes in the form of $10,000 cash, and a $2,000 fuel credit at the Steveston Chevron facility. “This support from Chevron will really help to keep our crews safe and ready to help the public,” said Station 10 leader Aaron Harnden. “We rely heavily on public and corporate support to
keep our boats operational and our crews safe.” Chevron spokesperson Adrien Byrne said Chevron recognizes the critical work done by these volunteers. “RCMSAR provides an invaluable lifesaving service for those in distress on the water and Chevron supports the role of Station 10 in keeping the Richmond sea-going community safe,” Byrne said. Richmond Coun. Derek Dang recognized the critical work the station’s volunteers do to keep the community safe. “As an island city, the need for a reliable water borne response and rescue team is paramount. We are so fortunate to be served by the volunteers of RCMSAR as well as the Canadian Coast Guard.” The local rescue station is among more than 40 on the west coast and B.C. Interior, and is a charity supported by more than 1,200 volunteer members. The local team responds to an average of 800 marine emergencies each year. —Martin van den Hemel

JANUARY 7,1923 - DECEMBER 14, 2014 With heavy hearts we sadly announce the passing of Arnold Francis Gerding of Richmond, B.C. Born in the rural community of Vulcan, Ab., Arnold grew up in a large family with seven siblings. At the outbreak of World War II, he enlisted in Canada’s air force, serving as a pilot during the war for Atlantic Ocean convoys sending supplies from Canada and the U.S. to Britain. After the war, he returned to Vulcan and married Francis Hawkins in 1947 before re-enlisting in the Air Force until retiring from his military career in 1969. During that time, Arnold and Francis were stationed at different military bases across Canada, the United States and Europe. His final posting was in Winnipeg. After retiring from the military, Arnold and Francis returned to Richmond, where they had lived during the early 1960s. He would eventually work for Canada Post until his retirement in 1987. Arnold thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years puttering around in his garden, heading out on numerous cruise holiday adventures and keeping in touch with his Air Force comrades by attending many reunions. Arnold was an intelligent and caring man who always looked out for his family, a popular and thoughtful friend and relative to many who always remained close to his rural roots. Arnold is survived by his wife Francis as well as two children Sandra Gerding of Richmond, BC; Barry (Amber) Gerding of Kelowna; sisters Norma O’Hare of Calgary, Ab. and Margaret Shaw of Vulcan, Ab., and brother Robert Gerding, of Vulcan, Ab.; and his grandchildren Jade and Blake. He is predeceased by his sister Eileen and brothers Raymond, Joseph Jr., and Cecil and is survived by many nephews and nieces. The family thanks Dr. Baker and the staff and Richmond General Hospital for their care and compassion. There will be no service by request. A celebration of life reception will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, 1:30 p.m., at branch 291 of Royal Canadian Legion in Richmond, 11131 Bridgeport Rd. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the charity of your choice.

Richmond fire trucks brandished the tell-tale moustaches again for the entire month for the second year in a row. Last month, all firefighters in North America supported the pink ribbon campaign with large pink bows, t-shirts, and pink medical gloves.
