Grade 7/8 students at Alvin A. McKay Middle School in Greenville in the Nass Valley take the pictures for photo day at school after learning a few photography tips.

Students gain photographic experience

I would like to wish all of my clients, past and present, a joy filled holiday season!

By Margaret Speirs THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

GREENVILLE - A group of Grade 7 and 8 students in the Nass Valley are getting some extra learning in photography and taking great pictures in the process. The students recently took pictures of themselves and their friends on school photo day and will be taking more photos as the school year goes on, notably the eulachon run next year, says Ken Cornett, principal of Alvin A. Mckay Middle School in Greenville (Lakalzap). It started when Cornett went to take Santa photos and when

asked, he said he was going to take some and the students were going to take some. The young people had been given some instruction about posing the day before and they did what they were told and the photos turned out really nice, said Cornett. “One boy’s mother is into photography and she was telling him how to pose and he said ‘I already know that stuff, he said, that’s what we learned yesterday,’” said Cornett. Six or seven students were interested in learning and taking the photos out of the classes, he added. “They love it. They want to

do more,” he said, adding that the school photos were done in front of a green screen so they could change the background but there was a time constraint so no changes were made. Students that were absent for photo day will have their photos taken by these young photographers at the next school photo day next year. Cornett, who’s a wildlife photographer and likes making documentaries, wants to do a photojournalism project of the students’ photography. And besides the eulachon, there’s plenty more wildlife for the students to photograph: seal lions, seals, killer whales and

then the fishermen too. When Cornett first came to the Nass Valley, he visited with different people and whatever their occupation was, he tried to make a story out of it with a series of photos. “That’s what I want them to do,” he said about the students’ future subjects. Alvin A. McKay Middle School contains Kindergarten and Grades 5-8 classes. It was formerly called Lakalzap Elementary School but was later renamed to recognize the achievements of Alvin McKay, a longtime educator and also school administrator in the Nass Valley.

Kitimat endorses huge LNG project By Cameron Orr

THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - It wasn’t a unanimous decision but council is officially endorsing the Shell-led LNG Canada project in a letter submission to the provincial government’s environmental assessment office (EAO).

The letter, to be signed by Mayor Phil Germuth, begins with “On behalf of Kitimat Council, I wish to extend our formal support for the proposed LNG Canada Export Terminal Project.” Perhaps ironically, Germuth would have been the only person

NEW HAZELTON - Week of Dec 3 - Dec. 10 New Hazelton RCMP responded to 61 calls during the week of Dec 3-10. December 3 - Police responded to a break and enter that occurred overnight at the Hazelton Arena. Suspect(s) made entry and stole some confectionary. December 4 - A storage shed on the 4800 block of Cottonwood Dr in Gitanmaax was broken into during the night. A hunting rifle was reported stolen. December 5 - Several BC Hydro decommissioned power poles were reported as having been cut down along the Gitsegukla Reserve. December 6 - 11:45 pm, police were called to attend the Subway in New Hazelton which had been broken into 10 minutes earlier. Cash was stolen and damage was sustained to the front door. December 9 - It was reported that overnight, a vehicle parked in the complainant’s driveway on the 4200 block of Field St in Hazelton, had been entered and items stolen. And, as always, RCMP officers are reminding motorists to drive according to winter conditions and to ensure their vehicles are in good working order and that proper tires are used.

who didn’t vote on the matter, as he was away sick for the December 15 meeting. The endorsement didn’t reach universal appeal. Councillor Larry Walker said he couldn’t see a benefit of writing a letter, given that the EAO is in a technical review process. Rob Goffinet agreed, said the EAO is not the place to be giving blanket support of projects. That isn’t to say he wouldn’t support the project, said Goffinet, but that this is not

the place to do so. An amendment was proposed for the letter, which softened the approach and included wording that would have given council’s support provisional on successful completion of the EAO process. Mario Feldhoff was against the idea, saying it would a given that the EAO process continues. Economic Development Officer Rose Klukas also noted for council’s benefit that through her role on the environmental assessment working group, the

District does continually add technical feedback to the application as well. The motion to draft and send the letter approved, with Goffinet and Walker remaining opposed at a vote. Apache, a 50 per cent partner with Shell in the LNG Canada project just recently sold its share to Australian LNG giant Woodside in a transaction that included a project Apache had in Australia. Woodside paid (US) $3.7 billion to Apache in the deal.

CN, Unifor bargaining talks stall, more grain moved in 2014 By Todd Hamilton THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT - Bargaining talks have stalled between CN and Unifor. Unifor, which represents 12,500 rail workers across northwest B.C. and Canada has five collective agreements with CN, which cover mechanics, clerical workers, excavator operators and truck drivers. CN and Unifor began negotiations on Sept. 19 in advance of the current agreement’s expiry on Dec. 31. Jerry Dias, Unifor president, said in a press re-

lease last week that while progress was made, he is frustrated. “There is frustration on the part of all of the bargaining committees that CN has refused to address the issues necessary that would help move discussions along,” Dias said. In the statement, Dias said despite months of negotiations including four bargaining tables meeting concurrently in Montreal, several stumbling blocks remain — mainly non-economic issues. “CN remains optimistic that it can reach an agreement with Unifor in the near term,” CN rail spokesman Mark Hallman said in an email

according Reuters. The two sides will schedule future meetings in January to continue the negotiations. The Canadian Transportation Agency on Dec. 18 issued a ruling that the revenues of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company (CP) are under its maximum revenue entitlement and that the Canadian National Railway Company (CN) has exceeded its revenue entitlement for crop year 2013-2014. CN and CP moved more than 18 per cent more grain this crop year In the 2013-2014 crop year, 38,461,953 tonnes of western grain were moved, which is 18.8 per

cent higher than the volume moved during the previous crop year. The average length of haul of 945 miles was just one mile, or 0.1 per cent higher, than the previous crop year. CP’s grain revenue of $623,620,236 was $1,653,714 below its entitlement of $625,273,950. CN’s grain revenue of $672,110,852 was $4,981,915 above its entitlement of $667,128,937. CN now has 30 days to pay the amount by which it exceeded its 2013-2014 revenue entitlement, in addition to a five per cent penalty of $249,096.

For New Years eve Kitimat buses will be free once again By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

KITIMAT - New Years Eve will, as per Kitimat tradition, have free bus service. The no-fare service begins at 7 p.m. and runs to 5 a.m. The service is being sponsored by local industrial players. The free buses are an entirely useful offering on a night known for elaborate celebrations which may leave people unable to drive themselves. Ridership for the 2013-2014 New Years couldn’t be tracked down by press time, but the prior year’s results showed 381 people use the service. In 2011 655 took advantage of the bus service. Kitimat’s busiest night for free buses was in 2006. That night 1,239 riders took advantage of the free ridges. That’s one of 10 times in 31 years of free New Years bus service that a single night saw more than 1,000.

Northern Savings combines insurance companies

By Todd Hamilton THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR

PRINCE RUPERT Northern Savings Credit Union announced Monday that it will be amalgamating its insurance subsidiaries. “Our insurance agencies are fundamental to Northern Savings’ core business and a vital part of our brand offering and success,” Northern Savings’ president and CEO, Ken Doleman said in a statement issued on Monday. “This brings us closer together as the Northern Savings family – through increased support and consistency of operations.” The current subsidiary insurance companies: Northern Savings Insurance Agency Ltd., Paragon Insurance Agencies Ltd., and Key West Insurance Services Ltd., came under the ownership of Northern Savings over the past decade but have operated individually. The amalgamation of these companies takes effect on Jan. 1, 2015. Doleman said the amalgamation provides greater efficiency in business operations. The upside, he said, will be better service and value to Northern Savings customers. “Clients will continue to be served by their local insurance agent in Masset, Prince Rupert, Queen Charlotte, and Terrace,” Doleman said. Northern Savings Credit Union was incorporated in March 1940. From its beginnings as a savings and loan cooperative, Northern Savings has built itself into the largest credit union in Northern B.C. with assets of $950 million, and a staff of nearly 200. “Northern Savings is proud to have contributed to our region for the past 74 years and looks forward to providing homegrown solutions for financial wellbeing and sustainable communities well into the future,” Doleman said.

Rosa Miller

PRINCE RUPERT - BG Canada announced Thursday, Dec. 18, that Prince Rupert’s Rosamaria (Rosa) Miller will be the company’s Project Controls Manager. “Rosa’s skills and experience are allowing us to move key project functions to the Prince Rupert office, fulfilling our commitment to advancing career opportunities for local people whenever possible and substantially strengthening the BG Canada team,” BG Canada

president Madeline Whitaker said. Born and raised in Prince Rupert, Rosa joined BG Canada (Prince Rupert LNG) in March 2014 as the office and project coordinator. “Rosa brings a wealth of experience to her new role, with particular strengths in project and financial management.,” BG stated in a release. In the new capacity, Miller will be responsible for all accounting and service functions for BG Canada. “I am over the moon with the announcement and am thrilled to be appointed as project control manager for

BG Canada,” Miller said. “This promotion has further motivated me to encourage young women in this community to strive for success and never underestimate their potential.” BG and its partner Spectra Energy received a federal export permit last year along with three other B.C. LNG project proponents. They announced a development agreement in 2012 to build a pipeline from Spectra’s hub of gas drilling and processing operations in northeastern B.C. to an 80-hectare plant site on Ridley Island near Prince Rupert.
