2014 Year in Review: January - June

An election, a flood, a teachers’ strike and the miraculous story of Jamie Sproule were just a few of the news items that made headlines in 2014. The Comox Valley Record will look back on the year that was with the two editions this week. Today, we review some of the top local stories of the first six months. We will follow up with the final six months of 2014 in our next edition.

Pictured, clockwise from left Jamie Sproule was found alive by searchers five days after going missing from his Cumberland home (inset, celebrations at the Sproule residence, the evening Jamie was found - inset photo courtesy CTV Vancouver Island); Despite school closures, Sharks were in full swim following a snow dump in February — until coach Kris loosened the training reins. The senior squads hopped out of the pool and went for a quick break in the snow (photo courtesy Tara Ryan); a Record year in review publication would not be complete without a fantastic photo courtesy Tanja Kerr. This sunrise photo was taken in March; Hit-and-run victim Molly Burton leaves the provincial courthouse in Courtenay following the guilty plea from the 17-year-old who struck her on Dyke Road.

January

The new year didn’t begin with new snow, rather, with Mount Washington Alpine Resort amongst other local businesses suffering from mild winter conditions. The Island Corridor Foundation had hoped for railway track repairs to begin in the fall of 2013, but an agreement had yet to be finalized with VIA Rail. A memorial service for 16-year-old Comox Valley longboarder Ciaran Martin, a Grade 11 student at G.P. Vanier School, had friends and family members come together at the Comox Community Centre. Martin was hit by a vehicle Jan. 2 when he and a friend were travelling northbound on Macaulay Road in Black Creek. Comox Valley resident and community animateur Gayle Bates was diagnosed with breast cancer. Bates is heavily involved with a variety of groups including the Child Development Centre, the arts community and the Sid Williams Theatre board. Community members came together to raise funds to help the single, self-employed mother of two. The owners of Mount Washington Alpine Resort have put the resort on the market for sale, although the potential change of ownership had nothing to do with ski conditions, explained Don protect save enjoy share Sharpe, director of business operations. Fullerton received an honourable mention by the Royal Canadian Humane Association Bravery Awards after he heard Burton’s screams for help about fours hours after she was struck. He searched the bushes for Burton’s voice and found her about 45 minutes later. Comox Valley teachers showed strong support for their union during a vote, with

more than 29,000 of the BC Teachers’ Federation’s 41,000 members voting in a three-day province-wide vote. The body of a 70-year-old Denman Island man was found along a rocky shoreline following an extensive search by Comox Valley Ground Search and

Rescue and Comox Valley RCMP. The man was heading to collect oysters, and officials said he had a pretty set routine. Friends became worried when he didn’t show up for breakfast. Police confirm it appeared the man had a health issue.

Escaping with just the clothes on their back, Lyle Johnson, Kelly Bouzanne and their sons Bobby and Dylan lost everything in their Oyster River home as fire ravaged their two-story house at 2259 Fearon Rd. An online fundraising page was created as

the family did not have insurance and lost everything in the fire.

The 2015 Comox Council meeting schedule is posted on the notice board and available to the public at Town Hall, 1809 Beaufort Avenue, Comox, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, excluding holidays. The schedule is also available on the Town’s website at www.comox.ca Richard Kanigan Chief Administrative Officer This notice is pursuant to the Community Charter Section 127

YEAR IN REVIEW

Comox Valley athletes enjoyed another highly successful year in 2014, with many individual and team accomplishments on the local, provincial, national and international stages. Highlights from January to June included (clockwise from top left): Mathieu Leduc’s busy season with the national ski cross team; Brad Gunter winning CanWest MVP and CIS men’s volleyball player of the year awards; Spencer O’Brien competing at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi; Ty Wishart having fun at the Comox Cup Road Hockey Tournament while on a break from his Deutsche Eishockey Liga team in Germany; Riley Wheeldon enjoying success on the pro golf circuit; Chris Anderson pounding his way to MMA victories; Brenda Dean helping the Comox Valley earn Tennis Canada’s 2013 Tennis Friendly Community of the Year; Larry Street’s induction into the BC Basketball Hall of Fame; and on a sad note the passing of popular softball organizer, coach and umpire Harry Lavoie.

Puzzling… Fun by the Numbers: Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Comox Valley businesses gain recognition with awards Four Comox Valley companies topped their categories at the 14th annual Vancouver Island Business Excellence Awards in January. Coastal Black Estate Winery and Meadery in Black Creek was named Agricultural Business of the Year; Courtenay notary public Daryl Robins CGA won the Entrepreneur of the Year; Excel Career College — which has a campus in Courtenay — was selected Professional Company of the Year; and Ambassador Shuttle Service of Comox topped all other nominees in the Business of the Year category, which recognizes businesses with fewer than 50 employees. •Natural Pastures Cheese Company was again honoured — this time at the long-running British Empire Cheese Competition — for its artisan cheeses made on Vancouver Island. The Courtenay-based company was awarded top standing in the following categories: second place for Boerenkaas, a semi-hard, flavourful cheese that’s also called 'farmer’s cheese'; first place for Pacific Pepper verdelait, a vibrant cheese flavoured with Comox-Valley grown habanero peppers and black pepper; second place for Cracked Pepper verdelait, a semi-firm but creamy cheese spiked with cracked black pepper; and third place for Mozzarella di Bufala, the rich, hand-stretched and formed mozzarella made with water buffalo milk from the Island.

Excel cracks top 10 In February, Excel was named a contender for the Premier’s People’s Choice award in a province-wide competition presented by Small Business BC. •For the fifth year in a row, Island Health was selected one of the province's top employers by Mediacorp Canada.

March For the first time, Vancouver Island Community Connections was accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation) for a three-year period for its employment, housing and community integration programs.

The Comox Valley Project Watershed Society received a letter of federal recognition for its Blue Carbon Pilot Project from federal Environment Minister Leona Aglukkaq. In March, the project had received $240,000 in grants. The Record’s business development manager Joanna Ross and editor Mark Allan announced their impending retirements. at the Comox District Free Press — had been a publisher at the Record. Allan — a newspaper journalist for nearly 35 years — spent about nine years at the paper. The City of Courtenay entered into an agreement with Multi Material BC for the collection of packaging and printed paper. Curbside collection — which is purported to save taxpayer dollars — was set to begin May 19. An alliance of business groups, including the Canadian Newspaper Association, opposed to the new recycling system demanded government halt the planned launch. The annual Islands Agriculture Show announced it will come to the Comox Valley for the first time in February. For the past three years, the show has been held in Duncan.

A long-awaited skateboard park was slated to be constructed at Village Park in Cumberland. The project was estimated to cost roughly $480,000. School District No. 71 donated a 5.53-hectare parcel behind Vanier Secondary to the City of Courtenay. The property contains a rare Garry oak woodland. The Comox Valley Commu-

May May 10 was a sad day at the Safeway on Cliffe Avenue when staff and management said goodbye to each other and to the community. The grocery store closed its doors for good, marking an end to more than 80 years of business in Courtenay. At the end of the business day, the store gave back to the community one last time as the Comox Valley Food Bank was the benefactor of all the remaining produce. Jamie Sproule was found alive May 27, five days after disappearing in Cumberland. The 65-year-old was discovered, unconscious, at a cairn, about 500 metres above Comox Lake Road, within a half kilometre of his home. Sproule, who is married to Cumberland Coun. Gwyn Sproule, had gone for an afternoon walk and did not return. Concerns for his health were heightened as he suffers from Parkinson’s and dementia. Residents of the village and surrounding Valley communities joined forces in a massive manhunt. The official Search and Rescue operation was suspended after a few days, but friends and family continued to look. Jamie’s nephew, Joseph Turner, was among a group of eight searchers who found him. “He was found where the cairn is, just in the woods,” said Turner. “I think he must have just fallen backwards, over a log, and landed on his back. We found him laying on his back, in a little bit of a clearing but with bushes on both sides. Pretty much completely enveloped.” Jamie was unresponsive at the time of the discovery. “It was an incredibly enormous relief,” said an emotional Turner. “I mean, it was like he disappeared off the face of the earth. To see him and get a visual on him was amazing.” That same day, teachers in the Comox Valley and other parts of B.C. walked off the job. A province-wide strike began in June and continued through the summer and into the 2014/15 school year. In April, after rejecting an offer from the school district bargaining agency for a long-term contract, the B.C. Teachers’ Federation served notice that it would begin work-to-rule action. Union members had voted 89 per cent in March to endorse a three-stage strike plan. In late-May, the regional district board considered adding a non-binding referendum question about affordable housing to the Nov. 15 election ballot. The question would determine the public’s willingness to fund an affordable housing service. Earlier in the month, directors had voted against a fall referendum concerning the proposed service.

At a St. John Ambulance AGM, Brody Fullerton – the man who saved 24-year-old Molly Burton in September after she was struck by vehicle on Comox Road – was recognized with an award of merit. He also received recognition by the Royal Humane Society in Victoria.

June

In June, Valley residents Chad and Ashley Dwolinsky were promoting the importance of registering for organ donation. Just one day before he was scheduled for a risky surgery with a 50-per-cent chance of survival, Chad received the heart he had been waiting for. “If he didn’t have the surgery the doctors said he only had a couple months left (to live),” Ashley said. Chad, 36, was born with a rare congenital heart defect. Although he had five openheart surgeries, he said he’s lived a fairly normal life, until a few years ago when his health started failing. He continued working full-time as a nurse at Casa Loma Seniors Village in Courtenay until September, when he was convinced to take medical leave by family and friends. On June 12, Courtenay council unanimously agreed that the east side of the city needs a new training ground for volunteer firefighters at a satellite firehall. The training grounds are expected to be ready for service early next year. The new hall is expected to be up and running in 2017, in conjunction with the new regional hospital. The firehall/training centre will be located at 220 Waters Place off Veteran’s Memorial Parkway behind the BC Hydro substation. Phase 1 of the project is estimated to cost about $1.5 million for site preparation and $966,000 to construct the training grounds. Later in the month, changes to liquor laws added a new twist to farmers’ markets in B.C. Vendors can now host beer and wine booths for samplings and sales. Also late-June, landing limits at the Comox Valley Airport were brought down to 250 feet, announced by the Department of National Defence, which adopted Transport Canada’s new standards. The minimum altitude was raised to 500 feet three years ago, which forced cancellation of numerous flights during adverse weather conditions. 34 C2C Express
