January A body found New Year’s Day on Whatcom Road in Abbotsford is confirmed to be that of missing woman Erica Schmidt. Schmidt left the home she shared with her husband Henry on Timberlane Drive on the morning of Oct. 5. A multi-day search was launched that included members of Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue and the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). The man killed on Jan. 2 in Abbotsford’s first homicide of the year is identified as Matthew Gordon Campbell, 31, known to have ties to the Red Scorpions gang. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) confirms that Campbell was the victim of the attack. He had sustained severe neck wounds, which IHIT says appeared to be stab injuries, and was taken to hospital, where he died. IHIT spokesman Sgt. Adam Macintosh says Campbell was known to police for his criminal gang-related history, and the fatal assault is believed to be targeted. The Abbotsford Heat’s operating deficit for the 201213 season will cost local taxpayers $1.66 million. The City of Abbotsford releases the numbers for year four of the 10-year supply fee agreement between the American Hockey League team and Global Spectrum, which manages the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre (AESC) on behalf of the city. The announcement brings the total payout from the city to the hockey team to $5.24 million. The city will repeal its controversial bylaw against harm reduction measure, after approving the third reading of an amendment removing the prohibition on services such as needle exchanges. The unanimous decision comes follow-

Abbotsford, with plans for a project that would see a transitional housing campground. At the annual general meeting of the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA), the organization approves $10,000 in funding for the society. Paul MacLeod, former president of the ADBA and member of the society, says the money will help the group move forward on its plans to build a project similar in concept to Portland’s Dignity Village.

ing a public hearing, where views on the issue are mixed. The city had been reviewing the policy since 2010, when the Fraser Health Authority and Hepatitis C Council of British Columbia called on the city to re-examine the bylaw, citing Abbotsford’s higher than average hepatitis C rates.

February The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) announces an arrest and charges in the murder of Matt Campbell last month at the Fraser Valley Automall. Jimi Sandhu, 24, of Abbotsford is charged with second-degree murder. Sandhu is arrested in Vancouver. Supt. Kevin Hackett, the officer in charge of IHIT, says the arrest came as the result of a “fast-paced investigation … (that) has continued around the clock for the past 30 days.” Recommendations released as part of a 20-year court expansion plan in the Fraser Valley include that a new 14-courtroom courthouse be constructed in Abbotsford by 2018. The courthouse is to include five B.C. Supreme Court courtrooms and

The estimated cost of demolishing the current facility and constructing a new one is $63.7 million. dairy farmer to the mayor of the community; to Victoria as the MLA for Abbotsford and minister of agriculture; to a longtime director and champion of Abbotsford’s Agrifair. Though he enjoyed working with his hands and could often be found out in the fields, his shop or his garden, his strong ethics and belief that he could improve his community encouraged him through a long career in politics. A controversial proposal for a 20-bed housing facility for homeless men fails, following a tie vote at council. Abbotsford Community Services’ (ACS) rezoning application that would have paved the way for a low-barrier housing project at 2408 Montvue Ave., across from ACS headquarters, is denied after passionate debate from both sides. The proposed location faced strong opposition from the Abbotsford Downtown Business Association, the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and some community members, citing the location of the project in the C7 downtown zone, which specifically prohibits supportive housing.

March The human remains found in Abbotsford on Feb. 16 along the banks of the Fraser River are identified as a man who has been missing from Vancouver since Septemeber 2011. Barry Hinchcliffe, 44, left his home in the 900 block of Expo Boulevard in Vancouver on Sept. 20,

The city announces that it has paid $5.5 million to terminate the remaining five years of its 10-year supply fee agreement with the Abbotsford Heat hockey team. Mayor Bruce Banman says at a press conference that the amount is estimated to be half what it would have cost the city if the team had stayed. A serial arsonist appears to be at work, after five fires occur within 48 hours in a relatively small geographical area. Two are set at abandoned homes, two are at businesses and one is

Abbotsford Police investigate a conflict between two groups of young men that spans the previous couple of months and racks up more than 25 incidents of property damage to homes and vehicles. Police are uncertain what started the problem, but it isn’t gang- or drugrelated. The majority of the activity involves damage to homes or vehicles connected in some way to participants in the conflict.

the scene later results in critics attacking police for their response.

May Teachers in Abbotsford join the first phase of province-wide job action by cancelling recess. Schools begin 15 to 20 minutes later to compensate for the change. Results of the 2014 Fraser Valley Regional District homeless count are released, showing that the number of homeless people in Abbotsford rose from 117 to 151 between 2011 and 2014. Later in the month, a transitional camp for the homeless is proposed on Valley Road off the Abbotsford-Mission Highway. A 20-year-old Abbotsford man, Colby Drew Jandrew, is charged in connection with the series of arsons that occurred in April. He is charged with four counts of arson and one count of public mischief. Six dogs originally reported stolen in Langley are found to have died in the care of their dog walker. Their bodies are retrieved by the SPCA from a ditch on Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford. Emma Paulsen is later charged and pleads guilty. Her sentencing hearing is set for January. Iknoor Sidhu, 5, dies

later. Justin Korelus is later charged with several offences but found not criminally responsible for his actions.

June

Teachers in Abbotsford and across the province begin a full-scale strike on June 17, resulting in an early end to the school year.

Dustin MacKenzie, 11, dies after being struck by a vehicle while longboarding on Bevan Avenue near Crescent Street. A memorial service is held in Jubilee Park. A 23-year-old man barricades himself in a townhouse suite on Bourquin Crescent East and fires multiple shots, resulting in police surrounding the building. Nobody is hurt, and he surrenders about two hours

Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen, 17, is announced as the Vancouver Canucks’ sixth overall pick in the NHL entry draft, becoming the first B.C.-born first-rounder taken by the team since Cam Neely in 1983.

July The blasts of propane cannons on berry farms continue, as council cannot find consensus on new regulations for the controversial devices. A proposed bylaw to limit the use of propane cannons in Abbotsford was denied provincial approval in June, and council couldn’t find internal agreement on a less stringent set of rules. A tie vote defeats the proposed regulations. Council calls on staff to report on efforts to start a regional starling management program to lessen the impact of the invasive bird species on crops.

A fire at Maan Farms is investigated as suspicious. When Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service crews arrive on the scene, the main barn on the property is engulfed in heavy flames. At the peak of the blaze, flames shoot about 60 feet into the sky. It takes crews several hours to get the blaze under control. The barn housed the farm’s offices, winery, “country kitchen” and main store. Gladys Avenue is busy as eviction day arrives for residents of a homeless camp. The area fills with people, vehicles, carts and recycling company trucks during the eviction of homeless camps along the street. Many residents of the camps spend the day moving items out of the area, following an eviction notice set for July 31 from BC Hydro, which owns the land. A number of citizens turn out with signs expressing support for the homeless.

August The B.C. Ministry of Environment looks into a leak from a local business that poured iron oxide into Matsqui Slough, turning the waterway a reddish-brown colour. The slough has an intense rust colour at Harris Road, where it passes metres from a sign declaring it a salmon habitat. Iron oxide is a common compound, and is widely used as a colouring agent. It also occurs naturally as rust.

The $25-million infrastructure project to upgrade Highway 11, improve border traffic, and build a new overpass across Vye Road is delayed. When first announced, the project was expected to go to construction in 2014, with completion in the fall of 2016. The timeline is adjusted because the city is still negotiating agreements with CP and Southern Rail to cross the rail tracks at McConnell Road, and the process has taken longer than anticipated. Jeremy Witmer, 21, leaves for Stanford, Calif., where he will begin a five-year PhD program in applied sciences at Stanford University. All his costs will be covered for the program after Witmer received a Stanford Graduate Fellowship in Engineering and

September Tinker the mare has a frightful afternoon, but can thank members of Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service (AFRS) for turning her day around. Fire crews find Tinker in a water-filled ditch with her back legs wedged into the muddy bottom. After a veterinarian administers a sedative to calm down the horse, crews are able to position a sling system around Tinker and lift the animal out of the ditch using their strength and a rope system. A quick check from the

perienced housing and homeless co-ordinator. A tentative deal between teachers and the province to end the ongoing strike sends administrators scrambling to prepare for the return of students. Mediator Vince Ready announces the agreement after five days of talks at a Richmond hotel. The province’s 60 school districts prepare to return to regular classes after five weeks of full-scale strike action that began in June. Mayor Bruce Banman says the city has taken calls regarding the availability of Abbotsford Centre, but that it needs to be careful before signing up a new major tenant. Banman is at the former home of the Abbotsford Heat for a press conference to introduce the centre’s new general manager, Andrew Nash, and an-

Council votes to approve in principle Abbotsford’s draft action plan to address homelessness. November Henry Braun wins the race for the mayor’s chair in the 2014 municipal election — beating incumbent mayor Bruce Banman by 577 votes, or less than two per cent. For council, four incumbents are re-elected: Patricia Ross, Les Barkman, Moe Gill and Dave Loewen. After deliberating for four hours, a jury finds Robert Adam Van Dusen not guilty of second-degree murder in the 2012 killing of Ryan Saint Ange. Nick Taylor hoists the coveted bronze rooster in Jackson, Miss., after winning the PGA Tour Sanderson Farms Championship. Taylor, 26, is the first Canadian-born golfer to win a Tour event since 2007, and the first-ever Abby golfer to do so. The victory meant a pay day of $720,000 for Taylor.

A decades-old cold case investigation is back on the front page when Garry Taylor Handlen, 67, is arrested in Surrey and charged with the first-degree murders of KathrynMary Herbert, 11, of Matsqui in 1975 and Monica Jack, 12, of Merritt in 1978. Police say that Handlen had been a “person of interest” early in the investigations into the two murders, but it had taken years to gather enough evidence to support charges. When Handlen makes his first court appearance in provincial court in December, gasps are heard from the 30 or so family members of the two girls as they see him for the first time.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency workers at an Abbotsford turkey farm quarantined after the discovery of avian flu.

An avian flu outbreak in Abbotsford and surrounding areas prompts several countries, to close their borders to local poultry products. The virus has now been

detected at eight Abbotsford farms. Seven countries have now imposed restrictions on Canadian poultry, including the U.S. and Mexico. Officials stress that avian influenza poses little danger to humans, and that all poultry is safe when prepared correctly. Police reveal that the woman whose body was discovered was discovered in Mill Lake Park in July died from inhaling the contents of “gas duster” used to clean electronic equipment. Const. Ian MacDonald says many people assume the products – used to clean keyboards and electronic equipment – contain only “canned air” and are harmless to inhale. However, the products contain chemicals such as tetrafluoroethan and difluoroethane, which can have devastating effects on the lungs, central nervous system and brain when inhaled.

SFU criminologist Rob Gordon called expanded use of wraparound services to help offenders re-enter society a “sensible approach.” But he said the report had few surprises and mainly recommended “more of the same” – including more use of integrated police teams rather than any more radical police service reform. “It still does not address the hot spot areas where crime has been a major problem, the most obvious one being Surrey,” he said.

A blue ribbon panel on crime reduction has urged the province to concentrate even more on the few prolific offenders who commit most offences and expand drug addiction treatment and services for the mentally ill. Chaired by Abbotsford South MLA and criminologist Darryl Plecas, the panel appointed by Justice Minister Suzanne Anton also urges the province to appoint a senior crime fighting leader to get different agencies to work better together. The province has already passed legislation that will allow it to force holdout municipalities to join specialized policing teams, such as the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. The panel report said lack of access for drug and alcohol addiction treatment was “a major issue” it heard across the province, and was told that in Port Hardy, for example, 500 people needed treatment but there were only six treatment beds. “The lack of funding for abstinence-based and other recovery support programs was described as a serious issue everywhere and as one of the main reasons for the high rates of recidivism observed across the province amongst offenders suffering from substance abuse disorder.” The report recommends spending more money on drug addiction treatment and mental health services, citing estimates that every dollar spent curing addiction cuts drug related-crime and justice costs by up to $7, and $12 if health care costs are counted. The report also calls for a task force to probe problems with the proliferation of unlicensed and sometimes “predatory” drug recovery houses. It noted there are 240 drug recovery houses in the Fraser Health region but just eight are properly licensed. Jail doesn’t stop persistent offenders, the report said, adding it’s “particularly ineffec-

Great West because one of my co-workers showed me a tennis scrapbook of old newspaper clippings and pictures she had collected over the years. “Reading through them I discovered that the tennis club had been around since 1978 and there was a long history of indoor tennis in Abbotsford. There weren’t very many indoor tennis clubs in Canada in the ’70s and early ’80s. I scanned the clippings into my computer and also came across more pictures when one of the offices at Great West was renovated. “I have been going to The Reach gallery in Abbotsford every year and going through the newspaper archives to find any more tennis articles and pictures so I can add to the photo book every year. The book roughly covers 40 years of tennis history in Abbotsford.” Happy New Year. See you all in 2015.

PEPPERONI MONDAY

When it comes to donating food, people often do it in big ways and that’s a wonderful gift for families in need at this time of the year. Approximately $1,000 was raised throughout the day on Dec. 21. If you are still looking for a special gift in the new year and being a tennis player myself, I recommend you go check out the tennis bubble here in Abbotsford where a book is being sold and covers the rich history of local tennis. Flipping through the many pages, you’ll see many interesting stories and faces from the past. I even found myself and some of my family members on the pages and bought a book that I share with folks to use. It’s a fabulous investment and everything is all in one package. Adrian Oziewicz, from Great West Fitness and head tennis pro, said: “I decided to do a tennis photo book about

Families- in-need receive essentials

As a mother and active career woman, Dr. Snyman can easily relate to the interests and needs of patients. As a compassionate physician, she combines the best elements of medicine, aesthetics, and modern technology to help her patients achieve dynamic, lasting results. “With my medical background and an experienced and knowledgeable staff, we will provide you with expert advice and a customized treatment program to meet your needs and help you achieve your goals.” Dr. Marianna Snyman

This Christmas season, 80 Abbotsford preschool and kindergarten students joined 2,000 Wind and Tide preschoolers from across the Lower Mainland to partner with Union Gospel Mission (UGM) in providing essential food items and gifts for 56 low-income families. Rachel Cram, founding director of Wind and Tide Schools, prompts her students each Christmas to learn about the needs in their own communities and to play a part in solving those needs. She does so through UGM’s Gifts of Hope initiative, where each year her students assemble holiday hampers for families in need. In November, each school received a list of

much-needed food items, as well as information about the gender, age, interests and hobbies of each family member. The students at Wind and Tide brought donations from home, carefully chose toys and gifts, and watched the hampers fill up. Each hamper is packed with all of the food items needed to prepare a Christmas dinner and includes gift cards to purchase a turkey, groceries and dairy as well as a personalized gift for each family member. UGM delivers the hampers to families in Vancouver’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.

HOLIDAY HOEDOWN

ALEX BUTLER Abbotsford News

Students at Abbotsford Middle School take part in the school’s annual hoedown on Friday. Vice-principal Jamie Beck says the traditional can be traced back to at least the ’70s, and possibly further. The hoedown is held before the Christmas break, after students have spent four weeks learning dances in gym class. The event kicked off with Bhangra dancing taught by students.

The complainant was arrested after police were called about an alleged domestic dispute between him and his girlfriend. The man stated that he had left the residence and, when he returned, “police came at him with dogs and slammed him hard on the ground,” according to the CJB report. The man claimed that his left hand was hurt when the officer “swung it around” and handcuffed him. The complainant was first taken to the police station and then for a

An Abbotsford Police officer who was accused of fracturing a man’s finger during an arrest in January of this year will not be charged, according to the provincial Criminal Justice Branch (CJB). The CJB made the announcement on Dec. 23, saying there was not enough evidence to conclude that the officer used excessive force or that the complainant’s finger was broken during the arrest. The incident took place on Jan. 28, 2014 and was then investigated by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), which subsequently submitted a re-

According to the CJB statement, both the complainant’s sister and girlfriend indicated to police that a week prior to the arrest, the man had punched a hole in a closet door at his sister’s residence. He complained about his injured hand for the rest of the week, the girlfriend stated. The officer who was the subject of the investigation said he had grabbed the man’s left arm after he complied

The man also did not mention anything about his hand while being transported to the Abbotsford Police Department, the CJB report states. In its statement, the CJB said there were several reasons that charges were not laid against the officer, including the complainant’s own admission that he was drunk on the night of his arrest and the possibility that he had sustained the injury when punching the closet a week prior.

OBITUARIES

Suddenly on Tues. Dec. 16, 2014 at ARH, Lorraine, wife of Fred of Abbotsford, passed away. Lorraine was truly the most loving, compassionate and generous person. Her thoughtfulness impacted many people’s lives. All who knew hew were truly blessed as she touched all their hearts. She is dearly missed by our families and friends. Lorraine leaves behind her husband Fred; son Todd (Lorraine); son Brett (Shakira); daughter Krista (John); sister Mavis (Jodi); cousins Norman, Jack and Dawna Park. “GramX6” grandchildren Marissa, Makenna, Miranda, Natalie, Jack and Javan. Funeral Service will be held at Trinity Memorial United Church, Abbotsford Jan. 3, 2015 at 11:30am with Rev. Bill Booth officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

SHARP; Phyllis Mary The Sharp family are sad to report that Phyllis Mary Sharp passed into the presence of her Lord on Dec. 20, 2014, at the age of 102. Phyllis was a much loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was predeceased by her husband William Royal Sharp and her son William Robert Sharp. She leaves behind her daughter-in-law Carol Sharp, her granddaughter Colleen (Lawrence) Locke, her grandson Brian (Melonie) Sharp and five great grandchildren, Ashley and Devan Locke and Brendan, Brice and Bronson Sharp, all of Mission, BC. A celebration of her life will take place on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015 at Abbotsford Pentecostal Assembly, 3145 Gladwin Rd. in Abbotsford at 1:30 p.m. The family would like to express their thanks to the Tabor Home in Abbotsford for more than seven years of compassionate care.

OTTO Bernice Annabelle Nov. 15, 1939 ~ Dec. 13, 2014

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, after a lengthy, courageous battle with Leukemia. Bernice was born in Winnipeg Beach to George and Christina Gray and spent her youth growing up in Manitoba. After marriage, starting a family and a successful career in Real Estate in Winnipeg, Bernice, Al and family moved to Abbotsford in 1980 settling here until her recent passing. Bernice was the glue to her family in countless ways. Ever the caretaker to all, giving unconditionally of her love, time and talents. She will be missed beyond words can express. Taken too soon, she leaves behind her devoted, loving husband of 50 years Al Otto, her children Sandy (Teri-Lynn) Otto, Randy (Shelley) Otto, Gina (Darren) Chard, and Kara (Chris) Collins, along with their families including 10 grandchildren: Lindsay, Brittney & Randi; Jordan (Mark), Alex, Trenton, Jessica, Kristina, Alissa and Jacob, and great granddaughter Hannah. Bernice’s greatest joy was sharing life with her family and many friends and was most fondly know as “Grammi” to many family and non-family alike. Bernice and Al enjoyed extensive travel around the world with family and friends making many more friends along the way, wherever their travels took them. Also grieving her loss is brother Tommy and family, along with cousins, nieces and nephews and many dear, close friends. The comfort of our loss is the knowing of heaven’s gain. We would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to each and every staff member of Christine Morrison Hospice for the special care and attention Bernice received in the last 4 months her life there. A Celebration of Life, open to all, will be held on January 2, 2015 at Trinity Memorial United Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way in Abbotsford, BC at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers we would ask you to make a donation to Christine Morrison Hospice.

Darleen Ruth

Sept. 12, 1930 ~ Dec. 9, 2014

April 1, 1943 ~ Dec. 16, 2014

HANSEN, Lorraine Anne (nee Park)

7

With deep sorrow, we announce the loss, on December 16, of a truly irreplaceable cornerstone of our family. Darleen Ruth Golke was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 01, 1943; the first child of Elsie and Arnold Golke, and spent her early years on the family farm near the rural community of River Hills, MB. Dar’s formal education progressed from the local 2-room school, to high school in Lacombe, Alberta, then to Andrews University in Michigan for a BA in English Literature and subsequently to the U. of Manitoba for teaching certification. She began teaching in Boissevain, MB, moving to a full-time position at Miles McDonnell Collegiate in Winnipeg, from 1966 - 1969. Dar moved to Toronto in 1969, and from 1970 - 1975 she taught at William Lyon McKenzie Collegiate --one of the newest high schools in Toronto. Those years were probably the most professionally satisfying of her career, with a progressive administration and bright, inquisitive students providing a rich teaching environment. In 1975, Dar moved back to Winnipeg, married, and embarked on a business venture. Unfortunately, neither marriage nor business survived, and she returned to teaching. In 1978, she joined the staff at Fort Richmond Collegiate, and remained there as teacher / librarian for nearly 25 years. She proceeded to upgrade her credentials by completing, in 1996, a Master of Library and Information Science degree. During the years at Fort Richmond Collegiate, Dar made many good friends, none closer than Gail Gowanlock. The two shared a thirst for adventure and joined forces on trips to destinations including China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Cuba, and Mexico. Many more excursions were pending. Dar’s selfless dedication to family members in times of need was extraordinary: if someone had a problem, Dar could always be relied on to provide direct support and intelligent advocacy. After retirement in 2003, she moved to Abbotsford and devoted much of her energy to caring for her mother. Dar’s watchful presence allowed Mom to remain in her own home until 2013, and saved the rest of the family much stress and worry: we owe her an enormous debt of gratitude for that wonderful gift. Left to mourn are: her mother, Elsie; sister, Morna, brother, Bill; sister-in-law, Barbara; niece, Raena; nephews, Neil and Kyle; uncles, aunts, cousins, and many good friends. She was pre-deceased by her father, Arnold; and brother, Bruce. A memorial celebration will be held in spring 2015, in the Fraser Valley. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.

It saddens us to announce the passing of Elsie at the age of 84 years while at Bevan Lodge. She is lovingly remembered by brother Jack (Carol), daughters Carol (Ralph), Sandra (Bill) and Susan (Steve); grandchildren Darren (Ashley) and Sheri (Fred); great grandchildren Hailey and James and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Hank; grandson Michael; siblings Helen, George, Erna, Marion and Ernest. The family would like to thank the staff at Bevan Lodge for their care and support. Memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Mennonite Church, 3471 Clearbrook Road, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Online condolences to the family may be made to: www.wiebeandjeskefh.com
