A photographic year-in-review Photojournalist, Jenna Hauck, shares her favourite images from 2014
August 9 • A man dances in the Spirit of the People Powwow at Tzeachten Sports Field. “Sometimes it’s the ‘little’ things that bring about the most memorable images,” writes Jenna Hauck. Like this dancer. “He was backlit, so his face was in silhouette, but the feathers and headdress he wore were beautifully lit by the summer sun. Plus, the line of the mountains in the background couldn’t have been more perfectly placed.” For a photographic slide show, go to theprogress.com/community. JENNA HAUCK/ PROGRESS

Light, timing, emotion make great images Jenna Hauck The Progress
T
his past year has been quite significant for me. I had my first solo photo exhibition in January. The six-week show, 14 Gold: Images from the 2010 Olympics, was a huge success at the Chilliwack Museum. In September, I was flown to Ottawa where I was one of two dozen people presented with a national Honouring Our Lifeblood award from Canadian Blood Services for launching the In Memory of Penny Lett Blood Drive. In October, hubby and I eloped to Tofino, one of our most favourite destinations in the world. And this February, I’ll be celebrating 15 years at The Progress, and also the 15th year-in-review photo issue today. Over the years I’ve definitely become a more experienced photographer. A lot has changed as I’ve gotten better with age, education, and a lot of competition. But that feeling I get when I capture an unforgettable, split-second photo never changes… and I will never get tired of it.
It’s a glorious moment. It lasts a fraction of a second, but stays with me for a long time. Sometimes forever. My breathing slows and my heart skips a beat as I release the shutter. A second later, my heart is going a mile a minute knowing the image I’ve just made has been encapsulated forever. It’s a moment of pure joy and satisfaction. A moment that only I see at the time it happens, but is later shared with thousands of people. Sometimes it’s all about the shadows and the sun being at the right angle to light the subject just-so. Sometimes it’s about capturing something at the perfect time, like a facial expression that happens so fast and is gone so quickly, that it would never be noticeable in actual time. Other times it’s a quiet and beautiful occasion that no one knows I’m even focussing on; the people I’m photographing are so involved in what they’re doing, they’re oblivious to the world around them. Spectacular images are all about perfect timing, Continued: IMAGES/ p8

to be a Pulitzer-prize winning photographer to inspire me. Sometimes it’s the “little” things that bring about the most memorable images. Like the passion thousands have for Cultus Lake United Church Camp (CLUCC). In May, a group of teens gathered for the last time to say goodbye to CLUCC, after its 81-year lease was up. They stood in a circle for an evening prayer, each young face aglow in candlelight (page 7). Or the simple beauty of Chilliwack. One day at the Cheam Lake Wetlands, a trio of ducks floated past me in perfect sync. The duck at the top of the frame was just slightly ahead of the one below it, which was just slightly ahead of the one below that duck. It was like the 100m freestyle competition of the Duck Olympics coming across the finish line, with firstplace at the top, silver in the middle, and bronze at the bottom (page 15). Another photo was of a powwow dancer. He was backlit, so his face was in silhouette, but the feathers and headdress he wore were beautifully lit by the summer sun. Plus, the line of the mountains in the background couldn’t have been more perfectly placed (page 1). Being a great photographer means you are continuously seeing images around you, whether you’re looking at them through a viewfinder or not. You frame things in your mind and take virtual photos on a regular basis — as you’re driving, walking your dog, or looking out a restaurant window. You notice details in things that others don’t see and you make a picture out of it. You appreciate how light falls on a subject, how a shadow has a life of its own, and how genuine emotions can touch your heart. Wherever you get your photographic inspiration from, use it. You don’t have to travel the world to create exquisite images, many can be taken right in your own backyard. photo@theprogress.com twitter.com/PhotoJennalism

When shooting portraits outside on a bright sunny day, move your subjects to a shady spot to avoid squinty faces, and turn the flash on. By turning on the flash you’ll get nice detail in both the shady and sunny spots.

Clean backgrounds can make a world of difference in your photos. Check to see if there are distracting objects behind your subject. Is there a telephone pole sticking out of the person’s head? A Fat Burger sign beside a pregnant woman? A child with his finger in his nose? If so, move around. You can move your subject and/or yourself to a new position. Try shooting from a lower or higher angle to see how the background changes.

She was a dedicated volunteer with the Thrift Store, Museum and Olive Branch Dinners, a founding member of Friendship House, a “Tops” member, a line dancer and a floor curler. She loved the “Jammers”, Minter Gardens, senior bus trips and was a cook and baker extraordinaire. Mom loved life and lived it to the fullest. Above all Mom loved her family and cherished her time with family and friends. She will be greatly missed but we are comforted by all the precious memories she left us with. A Memorial Service will be held on Sat., Jan. 3, 2015 at 1:30 pm at the Agassiz United Church, 6860 Lougheed Highway. If friends so desire it was Mom’s wishes that donations be made to the Agassiz United Church.
It is with profound sadness that the family of James Kenneth Todd announces his sudden passing at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital on Saturday, December 20, 2014. James (aka Jim, Jimmy, JT, Mij) was born in Banff, Alberta on March 13, 1950 to Edwin and Erma Todd. His childhood and teenage years were spent in Revelstoke, BC where many lifelong friendships were formed. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Susan, his daughter Shannon, sister Carol Conkin (Gerry) of Castlegar, BC; brother Dave (Arlette) of Laurier, Manitoba as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and many close friends. Grandpa Jim shared a special bond with his favourite little man, Evan and his faithful companion Mac. Jim was a kind, generous and thoughtful person whose passion for life and engaging personality enriched the lives of everyone around him. He drew immense pleasure in sharing his adventures with others, and his reputation as an entertaining story teller was renowned. His wonderful sense of humour and enthusiastic enjoyment of life endeared him to everyone who crossed his path. Jim’s legacy will be wrapped up in the manner in which he influenced the lives of those around him. He was a friend to all and will be missed. There will be no service as was his request. The celebration of Jim’s life will be held at a later date.

REID Dorothy Hilda (Nee Leary) June 1, 1924 - December 28, 2014 Dorothy passed away peacefully at Cascade Lodge in Chilliwack on Dec. 28th after a lengthy illness of Dementia. She was predeceased by her husband Bill in May of 1986 and her sister Emily Griffin of Fort Langley in April 1997. She is survived by her three children, David (Marian) Reid of Abbotsford, Lynda (Bob) Wiebe of Abbotsford and Brian (Jeannie) Reid of Vernon as well as her sister Miriam (Alan) Ruttan of Cultus Lake. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Anna, Amanda, Sharman, Colin, Stewart, Erin, Lindsay and Kimberley as well as great grandchildren, Brandon, Jade, Jorram, Avalon, Anna and Ava. Dorothy was born on June 1, 1924 to Hilda and Fred Leary and had a happy childhood in Chilliwack. In her teens she was involved in some sports as well as with the Young Peoples Group at the United Church. She spent the summers at the family cottage at Cultus Lake and worked at the Pavilion there as well as for a few summers she took the train to work at a lodge at Alta Lake at what is now Whistler. Dorothy received her teaching certificate at Vancouver Normal School in 1946 and then taught school at Central and Sardis Elementary. She met Bill while roller skating at Cultus Lake and they were married on June 30th, 1951. They spent four happy years living at the little cottage at Cultus while they both worked. They then moved to New Westminster for three years where they adopted the three children. Then it was the big move in October of 1959 when they moved to Terrace where Bill had a job as the new Tax Assessor. They raised the family in Terrace, Dorothy continued to teach occasionally while the children grew up. She was very involved with the ladies groups at the United Church often leading the groups. She had to return to work full time in 1971 as Bill had health issues and could no longer work. That was a very difficult time for her but she persevered. Dorothy and Bill moved back to Chilliwack in Aug. of 1976 and she taught full time at Strathcona Elementary until her retirement in 1985. After Bill passed away she volunteered at Parkholm Lodge as well as the Chilliwack Museum. She was also very involved with Carmen United Church as well as the United Empire Loyalist Group in Chilliwack Dorothy loved to travel and took many trips with Jackson Tours. She also loved to sew, knit and spend time in her beautiful gardens and with family and friends. She took great pride in her person as well as her home. One of her greatest joys was to spend time at Cultus Lake. It was difficult to see her struggle with the Dementia after being such a vibrant lady but the staff at Cascade Lodge gave her loving care and treated her with great respect. They all said they were going to miss her feisty-ness. The family, especially Lynda, is eternally grateful to them. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2pm on Friday, January 2nd at Henderson’s Funeral Home, 45901 Victoria Avenue, Chilliwack, B.C.
