Great start to 2015 for Somers family Valley’s New Year’s baby comes just eight hours into 2015 Erin Haluschak Record Staff

Centennial celebrations Pages 2-3

Both Lauren Somers and her doctor thought she might have her baby a little bit early, but neither thought he would make his appearance on New Year’s Day. “He was looking like he’s ready to come out, but I didn’t think it would be this early,” said mom Lauren from her room at St. Joseph’s Hospital. “He was due Jan. 15 — but came two weeks early.” Born at 8:04 a.m. by an emergency caesarean section, Hunter Dean Donald Somers, weighed seven pounds and eight ounces and is “a pretty good sleeper,” explained dad Brendan Somers. “I’m getting a crash course in diapers. It’s scary-exciting,” he added with a laugh, and Lauren noted she rested and

caught up on sleep after Hunter was born. Keeping with a family tradition, Lauren said she wanted her son to have two middle names, and had thought of the name Hunter previously. “It just stuck,” she added, and said she didn’t know during her pregnancy if she was going to have a boy or a girl. “Brendan knew all along it was going to be a boy, and I first thought it was a boy, and then in the second half (of the pregnancy) I thought it was a girl.” The Comox Valley parents credited the staff and nurses at the hospital for making their New Year’s celebration even more special. “The nurses have been pretty fantastic — everyone including the OR doctors. We don’t want to leave,” added Lauren. photos@comoxvalleyrecord.com

The boil water advisory that was issued nearly a month ago due to elevated turbidity levels remains in effect for residents connected to the Comox Valley water system. Turbidity refers to fine suspended particles picked up by water as it passes through streams and rivers in a watershed. Turbidity levels are not dropping as

Upgrading intake system to include filtration would cost up to $70 million rapidly as usual since a recent storm system hammered the Valley. Elevated levels may interfere with disinfection and reduce the available chlorine residual that inactivates any harmful bacteria. The advisory was first issued Dec. 11. Nothing can be done to acceler-

ate the settling process as it is a naturally occurring phenomenon in Comox Lake, from where the drinking water originates. Water passes through an intake at the BC Hydro penstock. It gets chlorinated and enters reservoirs. “Part of the problem is that we don’t have filtration,” said Dave

the City of Courtenay

The Courtenay Centennial celebrations began on New Year’s Eve, with non-stop entertainment at the “Memories are Made of This” New Year’s Eve Party, at the Filberg Centre, as pictured on Page 2. Clockwise from upper left corner, Swing Set performed both New Year’s Eve and at the official centennial celebrations on Jan. 1, as did “Sid Williamson”, the great nephew of Sid Williams. There was enough birthday cake for everyone who attended the Jan. 1 celebration; Kenny Shaw and Brian Temple were their usual entertaining selves on New Year’s Eve; The Ralph Barrat Jazz Ensemble kicked off the entertainment and Fiddle Jam greeted New Year’s Eve partiers in the foyer. In the centre of Page 2 is the placemat used for the pancake breakfast, with an image of downtown Courtenay taken in the early 20th century (also used as a backdrop for the photo spread). The official celebrations, on Jan. 1 featured (clockwise from upper right) a ceremonial dance from K’omoks First Nations members Jesse Everson (dancing) and Andy Everson (playing the drum); the cutting of the birthday cake; dignitaries representing the city and neighbouring municipalities, the province, K’omoks First Nations, RCMP and local fire departments were on hand. Courtenay Mayor Larry Jangula read a proclamation; the Comox Valley Pipe Band Society led the march; RCMP personnel stood guard; centre - cupcakes galore. PHOTOS BY TERRY AND ERICA FARRELL

As passenger numbers continue to climb, the CEO of the Comox Valley Airport is looking forward to increased conductivity and ease of service in 2015. With increased services by WestJet beginning Jan. 16 and Air Canada on May 1, Fred Bigelow said providing a flight schedule with various options which people like will keep the airport competitive and bring back passengers who may be flying out of other Island or mainland airports. “People do like flying out of here, and now with WestJet flying three times a day to Calgary, it is opening up the south and many international destinations,” he added. Along with Air Canada’s twice-daily, non-stop service from Comox to Vancouver beginning in May, Bigelow explained overnights in other cities for international or domestic travel can be eliminated with more flight times. “It opens up so many possibilities,” he added. This month, sunspots available through WestJet with a Calgary connection include Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Cabo San Lucas, Varadero and Cancun. Along with a variety of domestic destinations, U.S. and international connections available through Air Canada through the Comox Airport include Seattle, Portland, Honolulu, Hong Kong, Osaka, Sydney, Austra-

lia and London Heathrow. Bigelow added the increased trans-border connections will provide great opportunities for passengers using the airport, and he hopes the number of people utilizing the airport within their catchment area will grow. While he acknowledges customers do travel to Vancouver for flights, he hopes the change in schedules will encourage customers to fly out of YQQ. “Do the math before

going to Vancouver; the ferry, parking and a night in a hotel add up really quickly,” he noted. Looking ahead to the terminal building, Bigelow explained the new year will present some modest land acquisition and a revisiting of the current strategic plan which expires this year. He added the board will also revisit the infrastructure and capitol plans. With recent approval by Comox council,

a new Rogers cellular tower will be placed across the terminal site, which Bigelow said will help customers with their overall experience at the airport. The area had been a ‘dead zone’ for cellular coverage for quite some time, he added, and will help, especially for those passengers waiting in the hold room. Lawyer says China’s New Year’s resolution ‘a crock’ Scott Stanfield Record Staff

A Courtenay lawyer who spent many years in China does not believe the country will stop a long-standing practice of harvesting organs from executed prisoners, as announced Jan. 1. “It’s a total crock,” said Clive Ansley, who lived and worked in China for 14 years. “China likes to do this every few years. When they get bad publicity, they announce something. Don’t expect any change.” He says Huang Jiefu, China’s former vice-minister of health and the main person in

charge of organ transplantations, had committed to stopping it when pressured by various groups a few years ago. “This is at least the third time that they have committed to end it,” Ansley said. “Until 2006, they didn’t even admit they were using organs from executed prisoners.” In 1988, China enacted laws on organ transplants that required all prisoners who donate must give written consent — which he said was attacked by international agencies on the premise that a prisoner under a death sentence is hardly in a position to give any form of consent. Ansley notes aspects of Chi-

nese culture that believe the body is a gift from parents not to be defiled. But he also notes massive numbers of transplants take place each year for “international organ tourists.” A heart, for instance, sells for six figures. “It’s a massive, big industry, and there’s no source except prisoners,” Ansley said, noting also that a growing percentage of executions take place in hospitals to facilitate immediate harvesting. “It took us years to get the evidence, to get it to politicians. It’s just now so well documented, it can’t be denied.”

Home for Christmas Scott Stanfield Record Staff

A Courtenay man with a rare and debilitating form of multiple sclerosis received his Christmas wish when he made it home for the holidays. Isaac LeBlanc, 29, has a mysterious illness called Marburg that has left him paralyzed. For about the past year he has lived at Glacier View Lodge, a complex care facility. “He’s doing really good, he’s happy to be home,” his mother Wendy said, noting the difference over the past year has been “day and night. “It’s been a long time. It’s been three years in the making. It’s pretty exciting. He’s changed a lot in this last year, he’s grown a lot and gotten a lot stronger. Every day he keeps getting stronger.” LeBlanc started suffering from neck pain in late 2011. His condition quickly worsened. Within a matter of weeks he was unable to speak

or move his body from the neck down. He spent time in hospitals in Vancouver and Victoria as medical professionals tried to diagnose what was wrong. When Isaac first moved to Glacier View, he had limited control of gross hand movements, and he couldn’t turn over in bed. But neurophysio Robert Johnson and the restorative care team developed a rehab strategy that enabled him to regain and develop his upper body strength. Isaac worked on his fine motor skill by re-learning to write and use the keyboard. “It isn’t often that we get to prepare someone for going home from a senior’s facility such as this,” director of resident services Bev Powell said. “It has been a wonderful opportunity for our staff to learn and participate in his care and his progress.” Before Isaac can return home, a wheelchair-accessible ramp needs to be constructed at his duplex. reporter@comoxvalleyrecord.com

Georgia Straight Jazz presents a farewell to John Lee Welcome to a new year featuring fine live jazz music every Thursday evening at the newly renovated Avalanche Bar and Grill. Our 2015 lineup kicks off with a special and sentimental performance at 7:30 p.m. when The Andrew Janusson Quartet will be playing a farewell show for one of our fine young jazz musicians John Lee, much respected by jazz society members for his exciting appearances in 2014. After a brief stay at home in Nanaimo, John will be heading back to Boston, Mass. to Berklee College of Music to finish his bachelor’s degree in music. The quartet will be playing a selection of classic jazz standards, and hard hitting bebop tunes with a special emphasis on the virtuosic music of Charlie Parker. John Lee is perhaps one of Canada’s best young jazz musicians. The highly talented, multiinstrumentalist has performed in major cities such as Toronto, New York City, Boston, Vancouver and Washington D.C. in many high profile venues and festivals. He was awarded the Slaight Family Music Scholarship for Canadian high school students that gave him a full ride to Berklee. More recently he has blown away his Courtenay audiences as a stunning saxophonist and drummer. For this farewell performance John will be on the drum kit. Andrew grew up in Nanaimo, B.C. He began playing the guitar at 13, and advanced quickly to perform with the large and small jazz ensembles, wind ensemble and musical theatre productions at Dover Bay Secondary School, as well as forming bands and playing gigs outside of school. It was here that he earned the

performs regularly at many venues, including Hermann’s Jazz Club, The Avalanche, and The Crofton Pub and Hotel with local professionals such as Ken Lister and Miles Black. Andrew is quickly becoming one of the most in demand, young jazz guitarists

on all of Vancouver Island. Sean Drabitt left Victoria 24 years ago to study jazz bass in Los Angeles with mentor John Clayton. During the first decade he spent time in New Orleans, where he worked with all members of the Marsalis family, then in New York, working with the best young players on the modern jazz scene, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Eric Harland and Ari Honig among them. With all of this under his belt, specializing in a hard driving hard bop informed style of bass playing, he returned to Victoria nearly 15 years ago. Today he divides his time between various projects on both electric and acoustic bass. More recent career highlights include a western Canadian tour with Terrell Stafford’s quintet in 2012 and a number of gigs with pianist George Colligan. Graham Shonwise is a graduate of the Vancouver Island University jazz program. This fine young saxophonist is quickly becoming one of the most in demand players on Vancouver Island. He performs locally with many local professionals such as Hans Verhoeven and Ken Lister. Admission is $10 for members and $12 for non-members.

DISASTER FLOOD RELIEF IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT BC Major flooding on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland from December 8-12, 2014 has caused property and content damages. As a result of the damages sustained from this event, provincial Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) has been authorized for qualifying claimants, such as home owners, residential tenants, small business owners, farmers, charitable organizations and local government bodies, who were unable to obtain insurance to cover these disaster-related losses. In the Comox Valley, Disaster Financial Assistance has been authorized for: Comox Valley Regional District - electoral areas A, B and C, City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, Village of Cumberland. “All applicants should first check with their insurance agent to determine if their current insurance policy provides coverage for the resulting damage. Depending on the circumstances, businesses and farmers may have been able to obtain commercial insurance for certain losses. As part of the DFA qualification process, businesses, farmers and charitable/volunteer organizations will need to provide a letter from their insurer indicating that they could not have purchased insurance to cover these disaster-related losses.”

“Information about Disaster Financial Assistance is available on the DFA website at: www.embc.gov.bc.ca/em/dfa_claims/dfa.html. There you will find the DFA Application Form, ‘Disaster Financial Assistance Guidelines for Private Sector’ and ‘One Step at a time – A Guide to Disaster Recovery’.” “Although we encourage people to submit their application to us as soon as possible so that we can have the damage assessment completed promptly, the deadline date for EMBC to receive this form is March 12, 2015.”

What a difference a day makes. After scoring five unanswered goals Dec. 29 to defeat Jokerit Helsinki 5-2 in the quarter-finals, Team Canada fell behind 5-0 to HC GeneveServette in the Dec. 30 semifinals of the Spengler Cup. Canada fought back valiantly, narrowing the gap to 5-4 early in the third, but the comeback fell short as the defending champs went on to win 6-5. Canada outshot Geneve-Servette 15-9 in the final frame but were unable to net the equalizer. The Swiss team also beat Canada in last year’s semifinals. Royston’s Brett McLean was held off the scoresheet and finished the six-team tourney with one goal and one assist in four games. Salavat Yulaev Ufa defeated HC Davos 4-3 in a shootout in the other semifinal but fell 3-0 to GeneveServette in the Dec. 31 championship final. McLean, who plays for HC Lugano in the Swiss league, is one of eight players who were part of Team Canada at last year’s Spengler Cup. He was an assistant captain

The Campbell River Storm took the happy out of happy new year when they drubbed the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 9-1 on Jan. 2 at Rod Brind’Amour Arena. It was a rough start to 2015 for the Yetis, who were tied 1-1 after one period before the Storm flexed their offensive muscles and showed why they are the runaway leaders in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League North Division. Liam Shaw scored the lone Comox Valley goal while Zachary Straza started in goal and was relieved by Blake Pearson late in the second stanza. The Storm outshot the G-Kings 41-24. Things went much better for the Yetis the next night when they

blanked the Kerry Park Islanders 4-0 at the C.V. Sports Centre. Straza turned aside 28 shots to earn the shutout and second star honours while first star Jonas Horvath tallied twice to go along with singles by third star Sheldon Brett and Shaw. The Icemen return to action Jan. 7 when they visit the Westshore Wolves. On Jan. 10 they host the Victoria Cougars in a 7:30 p.m. start at Sports Centre Arena #1. Meanwhile, the rosters have been announced for the 2015 VIJHL All Star Classic, which goes Jan. 18 at the Sports Centre. Six members of the host G-Kings will be in action: goalie Pearson, D-men Keagun Selva and Derian Hamilton, and forwards Dylan Sampson, Shaw and Brett.

this year. Canada dropped their first game of the Spengler (in Davos, Switzerland) 2-1 to HC Davos on Dec. 26 then beat Medvescak Zagreb 3-1 on Dec. 27. They defeated Jokerit

Helsinki 5-2 in Monday’s quarter-finals. This is the 88th Spengler Cup. It is the oldest professional international hockey tournament in the world. Team Canada has participated in

every Spengler since 1984, qualifying for the final 19 times and winning 12 cups (1984, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2012). sports@comoxvalleyrecord.com

The Vanier Towhees senior boys basketball team opened their Christmas break road trip with an exciting 104-100 overtime win over WJ Mouatt in Abbotsford on Dec. 27. “What a game!” said Vanier head coach Larry Street. “Mouatt scored 13 three-pointers and we dominated the paint at both ends – an exciting game from start to end with the big boys from the Island prevailing.” Street said there were no big leads until the third quarter when the Towhees were down 10, 89-79. er scored the next 11 points to take the lead, Mouatt tied it and Vanier got last shot, but the game went into OT tied 90-90. “In OT it went back and forth, just like the entire game. With the score tied 100100, Anders Storgaard scored the last two baskets to seal the win. “Great games inside by Bryce Olsen (29

points), Storgaard (27 points and a late-game dunk), Chase Hobenshield a monster inside with 16 points and Tyler Knopp hustled his way to 21 points,” Street added. The Towhees’ next stop was North Idaho Jr. College for an eightteam high school tournament. – Vanier Towhees Basketball

In loving memory

June 5 1944 ~ December 21, 2014 Sharon was born in Melville, Saskatchewan and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After Sharon obtained her Licensed Practical Nurse License in Winnipeg and worked a short time, she and her 2 dogs drove to the Cowichan Valley where she worked in the Duncan hospital. Sharon broke her leg 3 weeks before Sharon and Roy were to be married. They did not want to postpone the wedding, so they decided to be the first couple to get married in the Nanaimo General Hospital with her leg in traction. After finishing her stay in NRGH, she then resided in the Comox Valley with Roy, where she called it her home. She is pre-deceased by her parents, Norman and Lilian McDonald, sister Sandra Brock and niece Corryn McDonald. Sharon is survived by her loving husband W. Roy Knox (43yrs) of Union Bay, BC. Her daughter Tammi Knox and her granddaughter Saskia Knox-te Winkel and her grandson Coleton te Winkel. She is also survived by her twin sons Darcy Knox and David (Brenda) Knox. Her sister Grace McDonald (Wayne Bellingham), brother Tony (Sharon) McDonald, foster sister Debbie Redsky. Niece Kim (Dan) MacAuley, and 3 great nephews and 1 great niece, and nephew Mathew McDonald. She is also survived by her mother in-law Erna Parrotto and sister in-laws Linda Parrotto and Lorna Samuels (Lester Dahl). Sharon volunteered for many years at the local Well-Baby Clinics and Flu clinics. She was a member of the local Pythian Sisters for many years. She had also been a Comox Valley 4-H Leader and a Union Bay Girl Guide Leader. She was an avid crocheter and knitter. She was well known for making her baby sweaters and baby blankets for many newborns. Sharon also enjoyed her cards – she played Crib, Cinch & Whist. She was also a great singer until 12 years ago when her health took a turn for the worse. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She was a very big part of Saskia and Coleton’s lives. We would like to thank Dr. Gornall (retired), Dr. Burgess (Courtenay), Dr. Swiggin’s (Victoria) and Greg and staff at Living Room Pharmacy for all their great care. Mom, you will be greatly missed by many. A Celebration of Life will be held in the summer. It will be announced at a later date.

CUMBERLAND CULTURE and Arts Society will hold its annual general meeting at 7pm on Thursday January 22, 2015. The meeting will be held at Studio Live, 2679 Beaufort St., Cumberland, BC. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be served. Bring your ideas for the new year and future plans.

Eric was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 27 years as an Aircraft Instrument/Electrical Technician. He made many lifetime friends during his life in the Military. Mourning his loss are longtime friends, retired Royal Canadian Forces members and many friends he made in the United States. Following a dream, he moved to the United States with his wife Murielle, where he worked for several years, RVd fulltime for eight years until finally settling in Tucson, Arizona in 2009. Eric was a giant of a man, with an equally big heart, who loved his wife and family. We will never forget him and his sense of humour. He will lovingly be remembered and forever missed.

During snowfall and ice events, the Town of Comox will make every effort to provide for the reasonably safe movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. As with all services provided by the Town of Comox, snow and ice control is limited by staff, equipment and budget restrictions. In keeping with Town Policy 4037R, the Town of Comox will proceed with the ploughing of roads upon accumulation of 100 mm of snow or when lesser accumulations have resulted in dangerous conditions. This policy grants priority to the various routes in the following order: 1. Arterial Roads 2. Collector Roads 3. Local Roads 4. Cul-de-sacs 5. Lanes In addition to the above, priority is also given to the routes serving public facilities including the Fire Hall, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Municipal Hall, School Zones, Bus Routes and the Comox Recreation Centre.

HELP WANTED

Snow removal and de-icing from sidewalks shall be limited to sidewalks along arterial and major collector roads, with first priority given to opening one side only. Municipal staff will also endeavour to clear snow from sidewalks fronting properties owned by the Town of Comox, while removal of snow from sidewalks in commercial zones remains the responsibility of the individual property owners. Ploughing of snow will result in a windrow of snow across private driveways and business accesses. The Town of Comox regrets this; however, we simply do not have the resources to clear these windrows from individual driveways. During snowfall events, the Town of Comox would offer the following HELPFUL HINTS: 1. Avoid depositing snow removed from driveways, sidewalks and parking areas onto the adjacent roadway. In most cases the Town of Comox will have little choice but to redirect it back into the area from which it came. 2.

Remove all parked vehicles from the streets until such time as ploughing has been completed.

3.

Ensure your vehicle is equipped with good snow tires and add additional weight if required.

4.

Allow for additional travel time between home and work, drive slowly and stay well back from the traffic in front of you.

5.

Do not attempt to pass snow ploughs or sand trucks.

6.

Please assist the Town in reducing flooding problems by clearing snow and debris away from and around catch basins.

7.

The Town of Comox encourages everyone to assist the elderly and infirmed with removal of snow from sidewalks and driveways.

Property values remain stable for 2015 Owners of more than 34,000 properties throughout the Comox Valley can expect to receive their 2015 assessment notices in the next few days. “Most homes in the Comox Valley are remaining stable in value compared to last year’s assessment roll,” said Vancouver Island regional deputy assessor Bill Dawson. New year, new beginning

T

he changing of the calendar on the wall brings the promise of a new beginning. Of course the baggage of the previous 12 months is carried over into January but there’s still the feeling of a fresh start, even if it’s largely in our own minds. And it’s important to kid ourselves a little as the feel-good atmosphere of the holiday season fades, especially when facing the long, cold stretch that is known as the current month in these parts. Procrastination and just sheer laziness are tempting as we head out on our way into the unknown that is 2015 but it’s important to take advantage of the opportunity that a blank page represents in our lives. We may be 25, 45 or 65 but a new year, heck even a new day, always provides the opportunity to make positive changes in our lives that benefit not only us but our families, friends and communities as well. Hopefully we soaked up enough goodwill over the holidays that it carries far into the new year and we become a little bit closer to that person we want to be or at least feel we should be attempting to be. Of course there will be bumps along the road to our goals, but as they say it’s not so much what happens to us in life as how we respond to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or something to that effect. Resolutions are good but often ineffective, it’s likely you’ve broken a few already and it’s only Jan. 6. It’s not surprising. If you made a resolution to run a marathon in 2015, and you’ve never run a mile before, well, chances are you won’t succeed. Want to drop 100 pounds? How about starting with 20. You can’t resolve to save more money in 2015 then go about everything in the same fashion as every previous year. Making realistic and manageable changes in our daily lives towards long-term goals, that may or may not include resolutions, is likely a better way to achieve a happier and more satisfying 2015 for the majority of us. –Black Press

Now, we all know that a certain percentage of people out there are not abiding by the advisory – many of them are already “bragging” of their bravery online. Congrats... and if you aren’t abiding by it anyway, why are you complaining about it? As for the rest of the complainers out there, you are correct: you have the right to clean drinking water. The CVRD is doing its part to make sure you get it. All they are recommending is that you bring your water to a full boil first. Is it really that tough? Is that your biggest worry as you head into 2015 - that you have had to boil your drinking water for the past few weeks? If it is, then you lead a pretty charmed life. And yes, we do lead pretty charmed lives in this part of the world. More than half the global population would relish in the assurance that boiling their water would make it pure enough to drink without worry of side effects. Whose job should be on the line here? No one’s. Those making the call at the CVRD have only our best interests in mind when they post boil water advisories, air pollutant advisories and the such. I thank them. We all should.

Bally family offers thanks and a plea for increased road safety Dear editor, On behalf of the Bally family we would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to the Fanny Bay Fire Hall, Paramedics, RCMP and Victim Services for their speedy response to the tragic loss of our beloved Paul Bally. Thank you to the people courageous enough to report tips to authorities, which led to an arrest; allowing our family to move forward in the grieving

process. We are so amazed by the overwhelming support from the school, school district, local community and communities elsewhere, through flowers, food, financial contributions and words of encouragement. This support is what is keeping us going. Paul took all safety precautions for biking: wearing a bright reflective jacket, reflectors on his pants and helmet and flashing lights on his bike.

We really need the infrastructure to make our roads safe for cyclists. According to the Comox Valley Cycle Coalition www. cyclecv.com, a route safe enough for cyclists “must be comfortable to take your four-year-old child or your 99-year-old grandma on”. Until proper infrastructure is in place please keep your family safe. Sincerely, Evelyn Bally

To avoid future flooding, make room for the river Dear editor, Another flurry of letters calling for a third vehicle crossing off 29 St. and across the estuary, as a reaction to recent flooding events, requires a response. The building of a bridge/causeway to cross the estuary is a nonstarter on a number of fronts, including ecological, cultural, and economic to name but a few. The root causes behind Courtenay’s flooding issues have also been raised in several letters. I agree with those that point out that the removal of mature forests from our watersheds is more than likely a contributing factor to the problems we face. It has been the case in other areas that mature, forested hillsides have evidenced a much better ability to retain heavy rainfalls and so prevent the rapid, turbulent

runoff which occurs on loggedoff slopes. Road developments with hard surfacing, culverts and ditches, which all channelize water runoff, can also create problematic drainage issues: the more water that accumulates, the bigger the problem. The excessive turbidity created in our drinking watershed (Puntledge River/Comox Lake), which has necessitated the recent extensive “boil water advisory” can also

be attributed, at least in part, to these factors. Of course, had the city not extended development onto an historical floodplain, this problem would not exist. Extensive channelization through the nowdeveloped floodplain has been done in an attempt to route the runoff from three major watersheds through a pinch-point at the 5th St. bridge. This is not good hydrological thinking. Huge

Thanks to all involved with community Christmas dinner the plan by investors group

Dear editor, The Earl Naswell Christmas Dinner was held again this year, at noon on Dec. 25 in the Florence Filberg Center. Close to 200 guests enjoyed the full turkey dinner served with all the trimmings and desserts you could imagine. I would like to send out a huge thank you to all the businesses and individuals that helped us gather the food and supplies to make this free annual community event a success. Many new volunteers helped out this year, on the 24th to decorate the hall and prepare for the dinner,

water flows after heavy rain events are denied their historical relief route over the floodplains (the agricultural lands) and into the estuary. These issues could possibly be addressed by raising the arterial/ emergency routes, such as Highway 19A, Ryan Road and the Old Island Highway, as required, which would allow for water movement underneath via box culverts and/or bridges. Secondary streets, such as Puntledge, Tsolum and Rye Roads, could be lowered to allow for these flows to reach their historical flooding areas and then drain into the Komoks Estuary through Dike Slough and/or under an elevated

Comox Road. Continued attempts to tame extreme flooding events by further channeling with concrete and steel when we should be attempting to work with nature and traditional flow patterns makes no long-term sense. Let’s learn from the City of Calgary (watch bit.ly/1oBxt3C), by practising floodplain retreat and making “Room for the River”. Extreme weather events, a changing climate and sea-level rise around the planet are part of the “new normal” and we had best get back to learning how to live with nature. Bill Heidrick Courtenay

Special to the Record

At noon on Christmas Day, a free turkey dinner was served to approximately 200 guests at the Florence Filberg Centre. It is a tradition that Earl Naswell began 32 years ago and it is still going strong under the direction of Rob James. Families and individuals who cannot afford Christmas dinner or who are alone for Christmas benefit from the Comox Valley’s generosity. Chef Dale Patterson and his helpers prepared 24 turkeys, eight hams, stuffing, potatoes, vegetables and gravy. Dinner also included tea, coffee, juice, and donated desserts. Guests were greeted at the door, seated at the festively decorated tables, and served

by volunteers. Including second servings and take-out (for those physically not able to come), close to 350 meals were provided. A Tibetan prayer by Geshe YongDong, founder of the Tibetan Bon Buddhist Centre, preceded dinner, and for the children Santa and Mrs. Claus were on hand to present gifts. “There is hope in the world for peace. If we can get together at this level we can do anything,” said one gentleman enjoying Christmas dinner. James, the current organizer, said that all this could not happen without the generous donations from the more than 40 businesses and individuals who donated money and food, and the time volunteers donated to cook, set up, serve and clean up.

Courtenay community gives back at Christmas

In Laughter Wellness sessions we are not leaving laughter to chance, but doing it out of commitment. That’s right - we are laughing for the purpose of feeling good! This is a guaranteed way of getting the health benefits of laughter. A good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs, and even works the muscles of the face, neck and shoulders, leaving muscles more relaxed afterwards. Laughing 100 times is equivalent to 10 minutes on a rowing machine or 15 minutes on an exercise bike. Try it out, even if you don’t think you have a sense of humour. Certified laughter leaders Susan Baker and Joanne McKechnie will guide participants through playful exercises where fake laughter becomes authentic and contagious laughter. Adults over 18 are invited to attend Laughter Wellness sessions every Saturday beginning on Jan. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at The Little Red Church Healing Centre, 243 Alpine St. To register or for more information contact Susan at 250-890-0626 or Joanne at 250-4651201.

Potter’s Place sale supports local charities

The Potters Place’s annual huge January sale runs until Jan. 30. This is our way of saying thank you to this wonderful Valley, which continues to be so supportive of local artists like those potters of the Potters Place. Local potters trim their studio shelves of all sorts of pots ready for the new season of making ahead. Many potters will bring new works into the shop and place sale prices between 10-75 per cent off. All these pots are perfect, no seconds. A beautiful selection of pottery is dramatically reduced during January, with partial proceeds going to some of our favourite charities in the Valley. We continue to support our local food bank, Y.A.N.A., Potters helping Potters and others. The Potter’s Place is at 180B Fifth St. For more information, call 250-334-4613. “One call, and we’ll do it all”
