Jonathan Salken, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital clinical nurse leader, and Suzie Vinden, operating room manager, are looking forward to providing improved surgery services to patients, thanks to money raised from Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation’s 2015 Lotto for Life. The foundation is raising $1.5 million to help construct and outfit the hospital’s new surgical suites.
Foundation targets hospital lottery toward surgical suites BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
B.C.’s longest running hospital lottery offers up a car, vacation packages and cash while improving medical care on the central Island. The Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation has launched the 2015 Lotto for Life to help build two new surgery suites at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and outfit them with equipment. The lottery kicked off Monday and is offering a limited run of
5,000 tickets at $100 each. “It’s our 22nd year and we’re the longest running hospital lottery in the province, so far as we know,” said Feron Walker, foundation spokeswoman. The foundation’s goal, through its various fundraising programs, is to raise $1.5 million of the $3 million total cost of the project. This year’s grand prizes are $100,000 cash, a Buick Encore all-wheel-drive SUV, $10,000 cash prize, a vacation for two to Maui and $5,000 cash. There are also dozens of other prizes, such as flat-screen TVs, shopping sprees

at Nanaimo’s malls, vacation packages and gift cards to name just a few of the prizes valued at more than $200,000 to be won in this year’s lottery. “So we’re trying to put in a few more cash prizes and this year is the second year in a row we’re having a single draw at the end instead of an early bird and a final,” Walker said. The Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation formed in 1977 and started fundraising in 1991 to help counter rising costs for medical care on the central Island. See ‘LOTTO’ /5
David Hutchinson is no longer superintendent for the Nanaimo school district and it is expected that John Blain, deputy superintendent, will be named the chief administrator in the interim. Steve Rae, school board chairman, said it was announced Monday that Hutchinson resigned and is moving on to pursue other opportunities. A motion to install Blain is scheduled for an in camera meeting Wednesday night. Rae said Tuesday that he didn’t anticipate any problems. The search for a new superintendent is to begin immediately. Rae said the board will discuss how it will go about conducting the search and the goal is to select the right candidate. He is hoping Blain will apply for the position permanently. “We’re going to make sure we get the right person and we feel comfortable with John as the acting [superintendent] for however long it takes to find the right person for the job, and it may very

well be John,” said Rae. “I hope he puts his hat in the ring.” Rae said the board is thankful for Hutchinson’s efforts over the past three years and wished him the best. He said he was surprised by the announcement and said he talked at length to Hutchinson after he and new school board trustees were voted in after November’s municipal election. Hutchinson and the previous board received criticism for the controversial 10-year facilities plan, which saw a number of school closures. “Whether or not he was going to stay or go really hadn’t even entered my mind to be honest with you,” said Rae. “We’re just trying to get our feet wet. I talked to Dave right after the election. “[We] had a long talk about where we saw ourselves going in the future and it was very positive.” The News Bulletin a t t e m p t e d t o re a c h Hutchinson for comment but he has not responded. Rae said he couldn’t comment on whether there would be a severance package for Hutchinson. “That’s a personnel issue that we’re not going to discuss publicly,” said Rae. “It’s confidential.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Foot ferry renegotiates city lease
I
compaNy Will miss startup date specified in contract.
by Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Island Ferries says it has to renegotiate its lease with the City of Nanaimo as the company is no longer able to meet its March startup deadline. Island Ferries’ passenger service will sail past a March 31 deadline laid out in its lease agreement with the City of Nanaimo, according to David Marshall, director of marine operations, who says it’s taking longer than anticipated to get federal dollars. Island Ferries signed a 20-year lease with the City of Nanaimo last July to dock two catamarans at the south industrial waterfront. The agreement was considered
a big piece of the puzzle for a new $63-million passenger ferry service, allowing the company to focus on financing the venture. It’s been searching for final investment since October 2013 and applied for the federal New Building Canada Fund last year. “At the time that we signed [the lease] we had reasonable expectation I think that we would close. It’s just taking us longer to do that,” said Marshall. Nanaimo Mayor Bill McKay said he’s surprised it’s taking so long to go through the federal process and says the city doesn’t want the company to default on its lease. “We want to work with them, not against them,” he said, adding he is in talks with Island Ferries about travelling to Ottawa to explain the project to the federal government. Even without the grant dollars, the mayor said the city
will stand side-by-side with the company in its quest for investment. “We’d really like to see this project go. We believe it’s a huge economic driver,” McKay said. Marshall would not comment on a new startup deadline, pointing out that timing depends on government, but said his company will look at the lease and see what’s in the best interest of both parties. The company has continually stated it will be ready to begin its ferry service six months after a financial close, which hasn’t happened. “We are trying to raise significant amount of private sector equity, so money that’s going to be at risk to go up against, among others, a governmentowned monopoly. That is a challenging undertaking at the best of times,” Marshall said. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Coroner identifies body discovered in September A body discovered in the Millstone River area of Nanaimo on Sept. 28 has been identified as Jacques Marcien Bonenfant, 80, of Nanaimo. The B.C. Coroners Service is still investigating, but has ruled out foul play. “Mr. Bonenfant had been reported missing on April 11,
2013, by staff from the retirement home where he was residing, after he failed to return from a walk,” said Matt Brown, Island region coroner, in a press release. The remains were discovered near a steep embankment below Terminal Avenue, just north of the Pearson Bridge.

Food bank campaign continues toward goal Nanaimo’s community food bank rang in the new year with $365,000 in donations for a new warehouse. Nanaimo Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank kicked off its fundraising campaign two months ago. Among the contributions are more than $200,000 in taxpayer dollars from the City of Nanaimo
and a $10,000 annual donation over the next five years from the Nanaimo Port Authority. Peter Sinclair, executive director for the food bank, said the total is pretty good, but still less than the overall budget for the purchase. The food bank aims to raise $550,000 to expand into a Fry Street warehouse more than 10 times its current size. Conditions on the new building were to be removed Dec. 31 – the same time it hoped to have financing in place. That deadline has shifted to Jan. 15. A crowdsourcing campaign will begin this month, Sinclair said.

Charities see fewer families in need
I
NumbErS drop for hamper program, toy drive at Christmas.
By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Fewer families reached out for food and toy help this Christmas, according to two of Nanaimo’s largest holiday aid programs. Family registration was down for the Greater Nanaimo Toy Drive and Hamperville this year. The Loaves and Fishes Food Bank, which distributes hampers in partnership with the
Salvation Army, reports an 11-per cent decrease in people served this season, with 4,620 clients compared to 5,199 in 2013. The Great Nanaimo Toy Drive was able to store away extra toys for next season after seeing 25 per cent fewer families register to get gifts. There were 597 families, down from about 800 in 2014. Carolyn Iles, toy drive spokeswoman, listed a number of potential reasons for lower numbers, from fewer people in need, to more organizations providing hampers and toys, and a change in where people register for the charities. Peter Sinclair, executive
director for Loaves and Fishes, said more than 4,000 people needing food assistance is “clearly a concern” but a drop in numbers is good. “I’d like to think that there’s just less need in the community and that’s a good thing,” he said. The Nanaimo 7-10 Club provided a Christmas breakfast and a last-minute dinner event for those in need of a holiday meal. Gord Fuller, chairman of the 7-10 society, said they believe there was a slight drop in attendees for the breakfast, which attracted about 200 people, but adds that there is still a significant need.

Baby keeps new year’s title in family

CaLvIN FRaSER’S mom, lainey, born first in Abbotsford.
By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
Calvin Ryan Richard Fraser kept the New Year’s baby title in the family, arriving into the world at 6:37 a.m. Jan. 1. Calvin made his splash six days early at his parent’s home, becoming Nanaimo’s first baby of the new year. The new year’s baby, weighing eight pounds, 11 and a half ounces, is the second in his family to make headlines for being first of the year and among 25 babies born in the Harbour City over the first seven days of 2015. Last year, there were a total 1,247 births, including 67 at home. Nanaimo Regional General Hospital also saw the birth of Vancouver Island’s first baby, born at 1:10 a.m. on Jan. 1 to Ladysmith couple Karli Dusseault and Brandon Folster. Calvin was due Jan. 6, but like his older sister, 22-monthold Isla, mom Lainey Fraser had a feeling he’d be an early arrival. “My birthday is Jan. 1 as well. I was the New Year’s baby in Abbotsford when I was born

in 1989 and so the whole pregnancy I was saying he better not be born on my birthday,” said Fraser. But Calvin had other plans. “Near the end, I was like, you know what, he’s going to end up being born on my birthday and sure enough, he was.” Fraser said her contractions started on the drive back from a midwife appointment and lasted into the evening. They put Isla down to sleep before calling the midwife just after midnight for their planned
home birth. He was born in their living room. “He did a little cry and then he was quiet and I remember saying, that’s OK right?” she said. “He’s just a quiet guy.” Fraser says it’s neat that they share a birthday but his looks are all his father’s. “He is a spitting image of [Ben’s] baby pictures,” said Fraser. But without his ears, “which is probably a good thing,” Ben Fraser added.

So what does a high school usually look like? A traditional classroom environment based on age rather than true learning levels. Students sitting at desks for hours on end, listening to teachers, with minimal time for physical education or activity. Instruction that primarily focuses on getting students to regurgitate the “right” answer rather than learning how to think and solve problems. What if....? • What if we designed our high school with a student first mentality, rather than fitting it into a schedule or time structure, or based on teacher or Admin? • What if we respond to current best-practice in education and rethink how we educate? • What if we were to be a leader in Nanaimo in creating studentfirst learning opportunities? School. Learning. Redesigned. We have spent the past several months asking significant questions that have challenged us to examine our high school. That process has led us to a redesigned high school program for September 2015 which aligns to best-practice research and to the draft BC Ed Plan (view-able online) which is scheduled for implementation in 2017. Come have a look at what we are excited about and we believe you will become as excited as we are.
HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Foot ferry plan springs a leak Nanaimo’s foot ferry project isn’t exactly getting off on the right foot. Island Ferries will miss an overly optimistic March 2015 startup deadline laid out in a lease agreement with the City of Nanaimo. We have had to make do without a foot ferry for almost nine years now, so we were of course encouraged when Island Ferries first pitched its plan, back in October 2013, to begin a passenger-only service to and from downtown Vancouver. At the time, the company indicated that it needed what it categorized as “final investment,” plus a partnership with the city. Last year it signed an agreement with the municipality to dock two catamarans at a waterfront property. But final investment hasn’t happened. Island Ferries is seeking money from the federal New Building Canada Fund, and though it seems to meet Infrastructure Canada’s project criteria, there are no guarantees when it comes to government funding. In the months leading up to a federal election, we can expect the Conservatives to give generously, but also strategically. The City of Nanaimo will do what it can to help Island Ferries secure federal tax dollars. Mayor Bill McKay has mentioned he would even be willing to fly to Ottawa to ask for the building fund handout, and if he’s successful, then his airfare is money well-spent. There are already significant tax dollars being sunk into this foot ferry, and now what we’re doing, in a way, is asking for more. We want Island Ferries here because the service would be useful, close and convenient and it would give us more transportation options. It could also attract newcomers, commuters, tourists and business opportunities. These are things that we want and need. But not at any cost. Will Island Ferries be a viable business in Nanaimo? If not, then what will it be? For now, we hope this foot ferry finds its funding, and finds it footing. Bennett and SFU’s Jon O’Riordan both described to me their experience at the Columbia River Basin conference, held last October in Spokane. Their main impression was that Americans, including traditional tribes, want those salmon runs restored. Vast amounts have been spent on hatcheries and habitat to speed recovery below the Grand Coulee dam, which stands like a giant tombstone for migratory fisheries above it. Should the Americans ever manage to get salmon above their biggest dam, it will largely be up to B.C. to provide sufficient cool water to keep them alive. That service has an increasing value to the U.S. as well as an ongoing cost to B.C. Bennett surprised some in Spokane when he said the U.S. needs to pay more for the benefits from the Columbia River Treaty. The flood control agreement expires in 2024. The treaty requires 10 years’ notice for either country to exit. Climate shifts are expected to make B.C. water more important than ever. In Lantzville, I notice stop signs with ‘Harper’ added below. What is the motivation to add our PM’s name to the emphatic stop? Is the originator as fed up with the Stephen Harper government as I am? A friend lent me a book, Party of One, by Michael Harris. I checked the library to see its status: There are 96 holds. When these patient people read the book, they will get a comprehensive picture of the extensive damage the PM has done to Canada and why we must stop Harper. On page 1, a wellknown pollster is asked, “Who is in Harper’s inner circle?” The reply, “There is no inner circle. Just a dot.” I get a picture of an emperor with a fawning court that never dares to challenge or resist. It’s clear. We must stop Harper.

Re: Trustees vote to halt Cedar school work, Dec. 16. Here we go again. A group of ‘special interest’ trustees is once again undermining the sincere and thoughtful work of an experienced board that preceded them. We saw that happen in 2008-09 when a new board vetoed a well-thought-out plan and cost the district millions in new construction. A new high school would have at that time served the Nanaimo school district for decades and the current situation may have been avoided. Regardless of the outcome of the board of education deliberations regarding Cedar Community Secondary School, there will be significant cost to the district.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the kind young man in the deli at Thrifty Foods Port Place mall. You went beyond the call of duty to produce the edam cheese for an elder during the mad Christmas Eve rush. BEEF To the whining neighbour who has nothing to do but sit around spying on their neighbour then gossip, judge and criticize them as being lazy. Seems that you are the lazy one – get a job. BOUQUET To all the kind, considerate and loving people who care for others. BEEF To the driver of the gold Jeep who drove through a stop sign in the big box store parking lot. Pedestrians have the right of way. Is that what you expect the next time you walk from a parking lot somewhere? BOUQUET To Bill at Island Breeze. My Dutch door wouldn’t close properly for two years. He fixed it in 20 minutes at no charge. BEEF To the people who complain about police cars left running without knowing why they are left running. If the battery of the computer is low, it prevents it from crashing. What if your life depends on that cop? BEEF A young boy jumped out in front of my car near Colliery Dam Park with a sign demanding $5 for “twerking.” I hit the brakes and tried to go around him, but he followed me into the road waving the sign. If this is your child please warn him of the danger of jumping in front of vehicles. BOUQUET To all staff at Dufferin Place. Thank you for the excellent care and compassion you showed to all the residents and family members. BOUQUET To 106.9 The Wolf radio station. Winning tickets to the B.C. Forestry Museum Christmas train will never be forgotten. My seven-year-old son and his six-year-old best friend said, “this is the best day of my life.”
BOUQUET To Kathy at Kowality Business Solutions for printing some gift certificates last minute for our business. BOUQUET To Jan at Coast Optical on Bowen Road for excellent service. First time in 36 years of wearing glasses, I could put on a pair of glasses and need no adjustments and I’m still 100 per cent satisfied with my choice. BOUQUET To the individuals responsible for decorating the tree in the bush in Cinnabar Valley. It brings a big smile to my face every time I walk past it. Thank you for taking the time for others enjoyment. BOUQUET To the News Bulletin for putting Merry Christmas and a bible passage on its front page on Dec. 24. Too many places now are referring to Christmas as ‘holiday,’ afraid to use the religious term Christmas for fear of upsetting someone. BOUQUET To the News Bulletin. Seeing the Christmas scene on the front page was so inspiring. Thanks for keeping up the Christmas message and not bowing to those voices who want it drowned out.
BOUQUET To all of our Christmas Angels who helped us to light up families throughout Nanaimo. Words cannot express the gratitude for the incredible support we received in making this the best Christmas ever for the volunteers, staff and board at Volunteer Nanaimo. BOUQUET To Ted Aeberhardt for raising money for Nanaimo Unique Kids Organization during your famous Christmas light up by giving hot chocolate and candy canes by donation. Your support and holiday cheer is greatly appreciated by NUKO and your community. BOUQUET To Country Club Centre for its Christmas light display. This is the only mall in town that shows the spirit of the season. BOUQUET To Brad, a young resident of a Departure Bay Road apartment building who literally jumped into the recycling bin on Christmas Eve to retrieve my keys which had caught on the bag just as I threw it in. Many thanks from this senior who is no longer able to save the day myself. BOUQUET To Sonny’s Jewellers. The transformation you did on my useless engagement ring was magnificent.

Manly seeks Green nomination
I
PARTY WILL make choice next week. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Paul Manly, filmmaker and social activist, announced he hopes to be the Green Party of Canada’s first NanaimoLadysmith riding candidate in the next federal election. During a public announcement at Mon Petit Choux in downtown Nanaimo on Monday, Manly, 50, laid out his priorities if elected, which include reforming Canada’s electoral system and changing the federal government’s stance on climate change. Manly, son of former NDP MP Jim Manly, came to the Green Party after the federal NDP executive prevented him and 23 other potential candidates from running in the 2015 federal election. In the summer, the
CHRIS BUSH/THe NewS BUlleTIN
Paul Manly speaks to a crowd of supporters at Mon Petit Choux during his announcement of intention to seek the Green Party of Canada nomination for Nanaimo-Ladysmith in the 2015 federal election.
Green Party hired Manly to document a cross-Canada trip on the Green Train to Fredericton, N.B., for the party’s 2014 convention. “I met Green representatives from across the country, I read Vision Green and I was amazed at the depth of the policy that the Green Party has and the vision for the future, so I think the NDP did me a favour in waking me up to what the Green Party had to offer,” Manly said.
Manly said he is less concerned about vote splitting among Green, NDP and Liberals in the region and more focused on voter apathy and wants to draw votes from people who didn’t cast ballots in the last election. He also wants to attract young voters, plus those who have become disenchanted with other parties, including progressivethinking conservatives. Manly also said he would be willing to form a coalition with
other parties. “The way things happen progressively in communities, in the country, is when we get a minority government,” Manly said. “That’s when you get compromise between political parties. There are things we need to do in this country, like changing our voting system to proportional representation and deal with climate change.” Manly described Canada as a “pariah state” for its unwillingness to enter into a binding international agreement to help avert global warming. Several people in the audience, including Coun. Gord Fuller and Jeff Solomon, Nanaimo school board trustee, openly pledged their support for Manly at the announcement. The Green Party nomination meeting happens at Beban Park social centre, Monday (Jan. 12) at 7 p.m. Federal party leader Elizabeth May will be in attendance.

Although Pritchett was the opener that night for Brooks and Dunn and Sara Evans, it remains one of his most treasured moments. “It was one of those things where I did not expect a crowd to be there while I went on stage, he said. “That was when I thought, I could end it all tomorrow and this would be the highlight of my career. On Jan. 17 the two-time Juno Award nominee will be performing at the Queen’s with Cory Marquardt and King and Cash as part of the Outlaws and Outsiders tour. “I always love coming back to Nanaimo, Pritchett said. “I am actually on and off
Gabriola Island quite often ‌ and I spend a lot of time in Nanaimo shopping or playing hockey and I am quite close to that town to be honest with you.â€? The Outlaws and Outsiders tour will kick off in Victoria on Jan. 15 and will see the three acts perform 18 shows in 21 nights across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. “I’ve never played more than four shows in a row,â€? Pritchett said. “So to do 18 in a row is going to be tough of 90 minutes plus and I am one of those guys who is a bit of a hard singer. I gotta keep myself in good shape.â€?

NEW PROGRAM at the Bent Tree Wellness Centre aims to bring out the inner artist in yoga setting.
Residents of the Harbour City looking to practise their onelegged king pigeon or half lord of the fishes pose in an artistic environment will be able to do so at one downtown studio. Beginning on Jan. 24, the Bent Tree Wellness Centre, located on 123 Nicol St., will be holding a six-week class called art and yoga. “It’s going to be combined with a one-hour yoga class that integrates different forms of visual arts,” said Adam Harwell, co-owner of Bent Tree Wellness Centre. “It is a very safe and open environment. All the materials will be provided.” Art and yoga will be taught Brenna Farley.
“She’s a very passionate artist, who has also done some murals and some artwork in our space,” Hartwell said. According to Hartwell, Farley, who was in Oregon and could not be reached for comment, hopes to be able to help people unleash the subconscious creative power that they have. In addition to the six-week classes, the Bent Tree Wellness Centre will be holding a free art and yoga session on Saturday (Jan. 10) from 10 a.m. until noon as a way for people to sample the course. The art and yoga course is the first of its kind at the Bent Tree Wellness Centre, which often features pieces by various local artists

Pritchett set to release new EP From /13
Pritchett’s upcoming tour will also see him perform with his eldest son, Jordan, who is a member of King and Cash as well as Faber Drive. Pritchett remembered when he brought Jordon along during his 2008 tour with Toby Keith and said he will no longer have to be the dad that looks out for his son. “I don’t have to be dad watching out for him like I was in ’08,” Pritchett said. “This is going to be a lot of fun.” However, Pritchett acknowledged that he’ll never stop acting as a father. “To be honest with you though, I don’t think I’ll ever stop being that dad for him on the road,” Pritchett said. “I gotta watch out for him and make sure he’s on the bus at the right time and on the stage at the right time and those are the only two things that matter.” Following the Out-
laws and Outsiders tour, Pritchett has plans to release a new EP, which will include singles that he has already released. “It’s looking like we’re going to a release an EP with a bunch of singles that we released the year before,” he said. Pritchett also has plans to release a greatest hits album sometime in the middle of the year. “We will be releasing a greatest hits package, which is something that is kind of surreal to say because you always think those people that get the greatest hits packages have massive hits and they have had years and years,” Pritchett said. “Well, I’ve had years and years and years when I think about it. I’ve been in this industry for 15 years now and I’ve been releasing singles for 15 years and it is hard to believe.” Last year proved to be another successful year for Pritchett
as the Hold My Beer singer picked up a couple of British Columbia Country Music Association Awards, including a Fan Choice Award. “The BCCMAs, I did not expect to win those and never really do,” he said. “Especially this year. I didn’t really see that coming.” With plans for an EP and a greatest hits record, Pritchett is excited for what 2015 has in store for him. “I don’t know what
to expect this year. I am just going to keep rolling along,” he said. “I think my brain is still in my 20s and my body is hopefully still in my 30s and we can keep rolling along and hit the mark.” When Pritchett isn’t focused on music or his family, he is often playing or watching hockey. Thanks to his success as a Vancouverbased country musician, Pritchett was recently named as a member of the
Vancouver Canucks alumni team, despite having never played professionally. “I am beside myself even thinking about it,” Pritchett said. Aaron Pritchett performs at the Queen’s on Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $35. For tickets, please call 250-7546751 or vist the Queen’s at 34 Victoria Cres. Hiles, Ileen Pearl (nee Rasmussen) October 20th, 1928 – January 3rd, 2015
With great sadness, the family of Ileen Hiles announces her passing. Ileen passed away peacefully at Kiwanis Lodge, Nanaimo, BC on January 3rd, 2015 at the age of 86. The youngest of 4 girls she was predeceased by her sisters Elsie, Mary and Margaret, and her grandson David. Ileen is survived by her husband Melvin; four sons Wayne (Sharon), Ken (Janice), Clint, and Garth (Siobhan); eight grandchildren Desmond, Clayton, Sheena, Lyndsey, Clint Junior, Randy, Andrea, and Tyler; Seven great-grandchildren Cole, Brandon, Hailey, Lina, Clara, Sadie, and June. Ileen was born in 1928 on the family farm in Parry, SK. In 1950 she moved to Victoria to be near Mel who was in the navy. In 1952 they married and had four children, all boys, to whom she dedicated many years to raising on her own as Mel was often at sea for months at a time. Ileen’s door was always open for a friend in need or just a visit. When Mel retired in 1973 they moved to Lake Cowichan where she spent many years as a volunteer with the group Beta Sigma Phi. In 1990 she and Mel moved to Nanaimo to be closer to family. She began her volunteer work with the Kiwanis Lodge in 1993 after her mother became a resident. She continued until Christmas 2013 when health issues ended her life’s work as a volunteer caring for others. Many thanks to the caregivers in Kiwanis Lodge where Ileen spent her last five months with her husband Mel. A celebration of her life will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1720 Bowen Road (off Townsite), Nanaimo, BC on Saturday January 10th at 1:00pm. Reception to follow on site. Condolences can be made to www.firstmemorialfuneral.com First Memorial Funeral Services 250-754-8333

Gaylene “DONNA Kidd
71, of NANAIMO BC, passed away peacefully, Friday December 26, 2014 with her family at her side. Donna loved to spend time with her family and could usually be found either completing the New York Times crossword in ink, working on her current jigsaw puzzle or kicking some butt at the pool table in the family room. She was born in Preeceville Saskatchewan, December 5, 1943. Raised on the farm with her two brothers and four sisters. She moved to Vancouver BC at the age of twelve and finished her schooling there. Married with two small children, in 1967 Donna and her family ventured north to Stewart BC where she resided and raised her family. In Stewart, Donna opened the first Sears catalog office which gave the residents of the small town access to goods not previously available in the secluded north. When Donna left Stewart in 1980 she moved to Terrace BC where she met Robert Kidd. Donna and Robert were married in Maple Ridge BC on December 29, 1984. Donna and Robert settled in Nanaimo in 1994 and never looked back. Donna retired from VIHA in 2004 and spent a lot of her retirement timetravelling with Robert either by plane, train, or motor home! Donna is predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Phyllis Strand, and her sisters Myrna and Carole. Donna is survived by her husband of thirty years, Robert William Kidd; her children, Debra Woodward (Joe), Alanna Lowrie (Rick), Lee Gehlen (Todd), and Sheila Gurrie (Blaine); and by her seven grandchildren, Noelle, Aaron, Nathan, Brendan, Jordan, Tyler and Trey. She is also survived by her siblings Bill, Sharon, Herb and Susan. Respecting Donna’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A private family gathering will be held in celebration of Donna. The family also wishes to extend a special thank you to Edwin at First Memorial for all of his help.
Elouise (Louise) Roads Wilson
Born in Victoria Oct.28 (a lady never tells her age) Louise passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec 7 2014 in Nanaimo Seniors Village. Louise was a well-known colorful character of Nanaimo. Every day, proudly wearing her Legion beret with her brave and loyal Jack Russell, Vicky by her side she walked miles. Loving to kayak, read, write, paint, dance and sing, her infectious laughter and joy could rejuvenate those fortunate enough to share in it. She had strong convictions and beliefs with the strength and determination to speak and be heard. She was eccentric and fiercely intelligent. Louise was from a notable family including Judges Eli Harrison Sr. and Jr. Judge P.P Harrison and Victor B Harrison, Prosecuting Attorney for the famous brother X11 case and five term Mayor of Nanaimo. Louise earned her Law degree and was one of the first BC women to open her own Law Practice. As a mature student Louise earned degrees in Visual Arts and Art History. Her work at UVic.was the catalyst for a book written about her family entitled ‘The Judges Wife’. Louise’s passing is a sad loss to our community and Vancouver Island. She will be missed and remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know and share her exuberance. A donation to a University education would be a wonderful way to honor Louise’s memory and passion. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday Jan. 12th at 11a.m., Branch 256 Legion, 1630 E.Wellington Rd.

May 1933 – December 2014 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother on Dec 23, 2014. Survived by daughters Cynthia Mackenzie (John) and Julie Wood (Colin) and grandchildren Kelley, Connor, Jordan and Trevor. Predeceased by her husband Ted of 54 years and sons Teddy and Nick. It is time now for our mother to be reunited with her boys.  At the age of 81 she passed away peacefully in the care of the staff at Malaspina Gardens where she has resided for the past 3 ½ years. No words can express our gratitude for all of the care and genuine compassion shown by everyone who was a part of her care. They truly are very special people.  There will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her name to a charity close to your heart.
Jackobus Zijdel (Jack Zydel) July 4, 1944 – December 9, 2014 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jack Zydel, a strong man with a heart of gold. Jack was predeceased by his parents, son Peter and granddaughter Sheena. He is survived by his partner and best friend Mary Kirkpatrick; daughters Jacquiline and Annie; granddaughters Jewellianna, Stayzia, Amore and Mija with whom he shared his childlike spirit. Jack is also survived by his brothers Ruud, John and twin brother Wim; also sisters Lydia, Joke and Gerda. Although the thought of you no longer here in body saddens us deeply, your adventurous spirit, kind heart and humorous nature will live on through all who had the pleasure of knowing you. You will be truly missed. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Clippers won’t sweat trade deadline I
ISLAND DIVISION’S first-place team will at least consider moves. BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN
The scores and the standings show that the Nanaimo Clippers can beat anybody in the B.C. Hockey League. So while every BCHL team will be considering changes this week at the trade deadline, the Clippers can deal on their terms, with a discerning eye. Mike Vandekamp, the junior A club’s coach and general manager, said every trade deadline is busy and he expects Saturday (Jan. 10), and the days leading up to it, to be no different. “We’ll have a look at what would make sense for our team, if anything, to make us better, but we also like the team that we have right here, too,” he said. The Clippers will think about the deadline philosophically. At 26-11-0-1, they’re sitting pretty and haven’t shown a lot of areas of weakness. At the same time, they’ve put themselves in prime position, and want to make the most of their opportunity. Vandekamp said a GM has to be cognizant of the team’s future, but at the same time, live in the present – and the present is promising. “There’s no guarantee that we’re going to win everything, but you’ve got to give yourself every opportunity to do that, I guess,” he said. Even without making any trades, the Clippers have been bolstering their roster, in a sense. Skilled forwards Sheldon Rempal and Jake Jackson returned to the lineup last week, and another first-liner, Devin Brosseau, is close, as is veteran checking forward Corey Renwick. “I think our team’s coming together well…” said Brendan

Taylor, team captain. “Maybe [Mike Vandekamp] thinks there’s a hole that needs to be filled, but I think our team’s strong and wherever we go after the trade deadline, we’ll be strong as well.” Guillaume Decelles, Clippers goalie, said he hasn’t heard any trade deadline talk among the players. “And I don’t think we need to talk about it. We just have to do our job, because everything is fine right now and everything’s going right,” Decelles said. “I

don’t think anybody needs to worry about it. We just need to think about playing hockey.” That focus has been a strength
– after any tough losses or injuries, the Clippers been able to resume their winning ways. “If there’s any movement or anything like that that we have to deal with, then we deal with it and then we deal with the chemistry afterwards and try and settle in down the stretch here,” Vandekamp said. Buccaneers bracing for big game The Nanaimo Buccaneers will make decisions this week that will determine their direction. The city’s junior B hockey club, winless in five, has a home game Thursday (Jan. 8) against the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s best team, the Campbell River Storm. The Bucs haven’t beaten the Storm this season, and with the game tonight falling just two days before the trade deadline, it’s another chance for the Buccaneers to figure out if they can contend. “We have the team that can make a push,” said Derek Bachynski, coach of the Bucs. “We know we need all 20 guys going and working together. It’s not going to be two or three guys that can beat Campbell River, it’s got to be the whole team.” He said earlier this week that he and his assistant coaches weren’t worr ying about the deadline. “ We ’ v e a l r e a d y made a lot of changes and I hate making too many changes, but changes needed to be made,” Bachynski said. “Hopefully it doesn’t lead into more changes. We’ll see where it goes.” GAME ON … The Bucs and Storm play Thursday (Jan. 8) at 7:15 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Superball tourney tips off today
I
GREG SAKAKI/ThE NEwS BullETIN
Barsby Blazers player Ryanne McLeod is defended by Wellington Wildcats opponent Megan Zobrycki during senior AA girls’ basketball league play Tuesday at the Wellington Secondary School gymnasium.
WELLINGTON SECONDARY hosts annual basketball draw featuring six Nanaimo teams.
Basketball league play started up again on Tuesday, and now several local teams bounce toward tournament play. Wellington Secondary School hosts its major annual tournament, Superball, starting today (Jan. 8). The Wellington Wildcats senior AA girls got warmed up with a 53-14 home win over the Barsby Blazers on Tuesday. Olivia Mjaaland scored 32 points and Mccalli Franklin added eight for the ’Cats. “It was good getting the rust off in the first game to get ready for Superball,” said Franklin. The Wellington girls have won their tournament three straight years and look forward to giving it their best effort again in 2015. “We’ve been looking forward to it since the beginning of the year and it’s what we’ve played up to pretty much the entire year,” said Sara Chrystal, another Wildcats player. “The whole school’s looking forward to it.” Wellington’s boys, meanwhile, will be looking to wrest back the tournament title after Dover Bay won the boys’ draw last year. “You get to play in front of all your peers, so it’s really exciting to play in front of everybody and hopefully you get that win,” said Hayden Jeffrey, Wildcats point guard. The ’Cats boys tip off the tourney today at 3 p.m. against Carihi, followed by the Wellington girls, who play Nanaimo District at 4:30 p.m. Dover Bay’s boys play Barsby at 6 p.m. and then the Dover Bay girls take on Carihi at 7:30 p.m. For the full tournament schedule, please visit www.nanaimobulletin.com/sports.
