Steppan recovering, still looking to come home TRE VOR CR AWLEY

A local woman yearning to come home is hoping to find a family doctor in the face of what she calls a miraculous recovery from a crippling disease. Ingrid Steppan has been fighting Stiff Person Syndrome since 2008, but recently underwent a groundbreaking treatment in Ottawa that she calls a cure. In order to return to Cranbrook, she needs to find a family doctor in the area or close enough to home who can monitor her recovery.

Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological disease, is characterized by progressive rigidity and stiffness, with symptoms including postural deformities, chronic pain and impaired mobility. After being told that she would likely die from the disease, she packed up and moved to Saskatchewan before getting involved with a doctor in Ottawa who was able to treat her condition.

Fireworks capped the perfect day at the Wasa Lions Club’s First Wasa Winter Festival 2014 New Year’s Eve Day. This family-friendly event was so successful, organizers are already looking forward to doing it again New Year’s Eve Day 2015. Events included hockey skills and pick up hockey on the brand new Pete Vereshagen Memorial rink, ice jug curling and lskating lessons on the family rink, games for the kids and snow piles to play in, bonfires for roasting hotdogs and marshmallows for smores, and fresh hot fresh warm bannock to eat. It was agreat way to connect with the community at the end of the busy holiday season.asa has a new tradition! See you next year!

At the Monday meeting, city council rescinded the three readings that dealt removing fluoride from the drinking water. The Cease Fluoridation Bylaw was intended to authorize stopping the addition of fluoride to the public drinking water if the Nov. 15 referendum vote had succeeded. Since it hadn’t, the bylaw readings needed to be rescinded. “The assent of the electors was not obtained on Nov. 15, 2014,” read Mayor Lee Pratt. City staff’s recommendations was to rescind the three readings. Council voted unanimously to rescind the “City of Cranbrook Cease

Fluoridation Bylaw No. 3799, 2014.” The bylaw was given three readings on May 12, 2014. Council sought the assent of the voting public on Nov. 15, 2014 to end the addition of fluoride to the city’s water supply. City staff noted in the report that Section 68 of the Community Charter states that a Council must not fluoridate its municipal water supply unless it has adopted a bylaw and the bylaw has received the assent of the electors. It was back in 1966 that electors gave their consent to fluoridate the municipal water supply by referendum, which was required by the Municipal Act at the time.

City staff hopes deer education will continue A R N E PE TRYSH EN

City staff said they were pleased with the first year of the urban deer public education program and hope it will be continued in 2015. “We worked with the City of Kimberley to put together a public education program on dealing with wildlife, in particular urban deer, and it was quite a success,” CAO Wayne Staudt said at the Monday, Jan. 5 meeting.

WildSafeBC put together the program for the two municipalities. “The program was educational,” Staudt said. “It’s probably something we might want to consider again in 2015.” WildSafeBC also provided a report on the first season of the program in Kimberley and Cranbrook.

Volunteers needed for children’s festival Tre vor Cr awley

The Kootenay Children’s Festival needs some help. The festival, which is going on 30 years in Cranbrook, is in need of additional volunteer directors to help organize the event and take care of behind-thescenes details. Jim Shepherd, one of the main organizers behind the event, said the pool of volunteers is starting to dwindle at an alarming rate. Money isn’t an issue; Shepherd said the organization is currently well-funded, but the group needs more manpower to organize the festival. “We’re sort of left with nobody on our committee and we need people coming in, joining up and being part of it so we have a rotation of younger people,” said Shepherd. “It’s not a huge amount of work, there are about five monthly meetings and depending on what you do, there’s probably only another eight or 10 hours involved throughout the year of organizing or being a part of it.” The festival, held out on

the Mount Baker Secondary School field on the weekend before mother’s day in May, is free of charge for kids and families. who can come down and experience children’s entertainment with free face-painting and cookies. “It’s fun. We bring in entertainers from around the province, as well as local entertainers,” said Shepherd. “Totally free, it’s probably the last free festival in the province left. They don’t have to pay for anything.” There are a few monthly meetings leading up to the festival, but the organization isn’t all that time-consuming, according to Shepherd. “We have to have people to help organize it, carry a bit of the burden. It’s not a big burden—I’ve done it for 27 years now, and every year they add a little bit more to what I’m doing,” he said. Anyone interested in helping out can contact Shepherd at 250-489-5597. The next meeting Jan. 22 at the community living building.

Nelson man steals Kimberley car, gets stuck in Vernon R o g e r K n ox Vernon Morning Star

All the Vernon police officer was trying to do was be a good Samaritan and help a vehicle out of a snowbank. The officer didn’t expect the driver to run away. Shortly after 1:30 a.m. Thursday, the officer was patrolling northbound on 32nd Street in Vernon when she noticed a vehicle stuck in a snowbank facing north in the southbound lane. “When our officer approached the car, a lone male was seen in the driver’s seat,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “As our officer pulled up beside the grey Buick, the man got out of the driver’s seat, and started to walk away. When our officer told the man to stop, he turned and ran.” The suspect was found a short distance away hiding behind a tree. He was arrested for theft of a motor vehicle. The registered owner of the vehicle is a man from Kimberley who just happened to be walking back to his motel room after having had breakfast at a local restaurant. He noticed his own vehicle in the snowbank. The suspect is a 40-year-old man with a Nelson address. He was slated to appear in Vernon Provincial Court Thursday to face charges of breach of conditions and theft of a motor vehicle.

The beautiful January snowfall has given the children at Pinewood School a lot to celebrate.

Steppan still looking to return to Cranbrook Continued from page 1

What’s miraculous about her recovery is the treatment she received from Dr. Harry Atkins, the Attending Physician, Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at the Ottawa Hospital eight and a half months ago. Atkins’ program featured treatment with stem cells that Steppan grew in her body over a 10-day period. Afterwards, the stem cells were harvested and she went through three weeks of chemotherapy that wiped out her immune system for the duration of the treatment. For the entire proce-

dure, there was no operation that required going under the knife, as previously and erroneously reported in the Daily Townsman. “A person can have a stem-cell transplant. It was not bad at all. I did not have a hard time,” said Steppan. “…I stayed in the hospital for 23 days because you lose your immune system— it wipes it right out—but other than that, it was great, and there was a total support system all the way around, whether it was psychological, social work, endocrinology.” After needing medi-

cal equipment such as a wheelchair and a walker for mobility, she’s been able to put them away. “I am recovering, it takes a while, my only affect right now is just my right leg, that’s the only thing that I can still feel stiff in. My other leg and my two arms are fine, so it can take up to two years for it to completely disappear and recover, so it’s been eight-and-a-half months now,” Steppan said. She is the third patient to have the stemcell treatment for Stiff Person Syndrome in Canada. In order for it to be called a cure, the pro-

PUBLIC CONSULTATION: Proposed Amendment of Official Community Plan The City of Cranbrook is proposing to amend the City’s Official Community Plan (OCP). On January 5, 2015, City Council gave first reading to “City of Cranbrook Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw No. 3814, 2015”. The proposed Official Community Plan amendment will: • remove the subject parcel from the maps and schedules of the Wildstone Neighbourhood Plan; • change the WIldstone Neighbourhood Plan text by deleting references to a second golf course, amending dwelling unit numbers to reflect removing the densities attributed to the subject parcel; • amend the land use designation of the subject property from “Comprehensive Development” to “Low Density Residential” and “Core Commercial”; The subject property is legally described as Lot B, District Lot 2869, Kootenay District Plan NEP19363 and is located at 2705 Echo Field Road as shown on the map below:

A copy of the proposed “City of Cranbrook Official Community Plan Amendment Bylaw No. 3814, 2015” is available at City Hall for public information. If you require more information or wish to comment on the proposed Official Community Plan amendment please contact Rob Veg, Senior Planner at: (250) 489-0241, or Fax: (250) 426-7264. cedure must be done on 20 people. “It’s not hard. It sounds complicated the way they have it set up, but it’s actually very simple,” Steppan said. “You give up a month of your life at the hospital, then you’re done. People are flocking to Russia to have this done all the time—Americans— because there’s not as much of it being done in the States as there could be. “In other countries, they are calling it a cure because they’ve done more than 20, but because Canada hasn’t, they can’t yet, they can just call it a treatment or an experiment, but it’s an experiment that works.” It’s also a treatment that’s relatively obscure, and Steppan is urging government at the provincial and federal level to establish a central source for the public to identify which doctors, hospitals and universities are working and researching different kinds of cancers and diseases. “This treatment has been available for 33 years here in Canada

Ingrid Steppan and Dr. Harry Atkins and what I really don’t understand is I lived in Cranbrook for 22 years and my doctor knew I had this disease but there’s no information on who’s doing what research anywhere across Canada and what trials are being done, what treatments are being done,” Steppan said. She still has her home in Cranbrook and her children and grand-

children still live in the area. However, it’s a daunting challenge to find a family physician, as there is a waiting list of a few thousand people, according to Steppan. If not Cranbrook, she’s hoping to find a family doctor in Vancouver—someplace she could fly to relatively quickly to see a physician.

Submitted

“I do want to come home, I really, really do. I have three kids there, I have a grandson there, I’ve met my grandson twice,” said Steppan. “It breaks my heart, but at the same time, I don’t want to jump the queue, because from what I understand from Interior Health, there’s over 6,000 waiting for a family doctor. “

Urban deer education program Continued from page 1 Community coordinator Sonja Seher wrote that although the communities are close geographically, the issues related to human-wildlife conflict vary widely. “In 2014, Kimberley featured a comparable number of calls to the Conservation Officer Service Reporting line as in 2013,” Seher wrote. “In contrast, the call volume in Cranbrook in 2014 had nearly doubled when compared to the previous year: an 83 per cent increase.” Seher said educational programming was a strong focus for the program in 2014, with over 20 presentations conducted in schools and special interest groups. WildSafeBC made contact with a variety of interest groups over the 2014 season, which included an array of events, door-to-door outreach and media releases. She said WildSafeBC Kimberley-Cranbrook

hopes in 2015 to build upon the momentum of its first season by expanding educational programming and engaging more community groups and volunteers. Back in November 2013, the Urban Deer Management Committee recommended that council create an urban deer public education program. The program was part of an update unanimously approved by council at the Nov. 25, 2013 meeting. In February 2014, council agreed to provide $1,250 to WildSafeBC to participate in a public education program around urban wildlife, with a specific focus on urban deer. The funding was part of the city budget, under the Urban Deer Wildlife Education line item. Seher worked on both the City of Cranbrook and City of Kimberley. Each contributed funds to the program.

Funding was also provided by the BC Conservation Foundation (BCCF), Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) and the Ministry of Environment. The WildSafeBC program works to reduce human-wildlife conflict through education, innovation and cooperation. It evolved out of the successful Bear Aware program and is owned and delivered by the British Columbia Conservation Foundation based in Kamloops. Over the spring and

summer of 2014 city staff worked with WildSafeBC and Seher to roll out the program. City staff noted they were pleased with the result of the first year of the program. They wrote that they also hope that council would be able to provide funding again in 2015 to continue the education program. The WildSafeBC Kimberley-Cranbrook Year End Report is available online in the Jan. 5, 2015 council package at cranbrook.civicweb.net

Bylaw readings rescinded Continued from page 1 City staff also noted that Section 137 (1) (b) of the Community Charter says that the power to amend or repeal is only available through a bylaw. Staff wrote that because the assent of the electors was not obtained on Nov. 15, the

bylaw can’t be adopted by council. “As per past practices and recommendation from the City Solicitor, it is advisable for administrative and record keeping purposes to rescind the three readings given on May 12, 2014,” city staff wrote.

Hunt for the missing fragment George Hickes had everything going for him. By 1687 he was one of England’s most noted scholars, a university dean, and chaplain to the king. He was also a Church of England divine, which meant his theological writings were highly influential and seen as authoritative. The 45-year-old had an exceptional career. In 1688 Hickes backed the wrong horse, and lost it all. He refused to acknowledge the monarchy of James II, William of Orange, and anyone else who belonged to the Catholic faith. He was quickly stripped of his degrees and titles, and declared an outlaw to the crown. The acclaimed scholar was now a fugitive in his own country. Although he had to live a difficult life of constant fear and hiding, Hickes also found himself free to indulge in an overriding passion he had: the literature of the Anglo-Saxons. He spent the next 15 years visiting various libraries which held ancient manuscripts, working out a grammar and translating the texts for the modern reader. In 1703 he published ‘Linguarum Veterum Septentrionalium Thesaurus Grammatico-Criticus et Archaeologicus’ (A Treasury of Ancient Northern Tongues’). As can be seen by Hickes’ mouthful of a title, the ‘modern reader’ was one who could read Latin. Hickes’ massive collection of the grammatical and literary writings of the Anglo-Saxons — now called Old English — became a watershed publication, shedding light on the language and literature of England before the Norman Conquest of 1066. What was once thought a dead language of the Dark Ages was once again accessible. Yet it is a handful of sentences of page 192 of this work which has kept Hickes name at the

BOOKNOTES

Mike Selby forefront of Old English studies, causing scholars nothing but headaches and debates. Here he translated a fragment of Old English verse, from what was left of a loose manuscript page he found at the Lambeth Palace Library in London. Part of the madness of this untitled fragment, which is unofficially referred to as ‘Finnesburg,’ ‘Finnsburh,’ ‘The Fight at Finnesburg,’ or even simply ‘The Fragment,’ is no one has ever been able to find the original page Hickes used. Notes given to his publisher stated he had found the page in a volume of “Semi-Saxon homilies”

at the Lambeth Library. Well, what did that mean? Lambeth had only two books of Semi-Saxon (Middle English) works, neither of which contained loose pages of ‘The Finnesburg Fragment.’ A third book, ‘The History of Kentish Royal Saints,’ is more similar to the fragment in words used and style, but no one can say for sure. Did Hickes take it with him from the Library and lose it somewhere. Did the printer have it and misplace it? The Lambeth Palace Library had rebound some of their ancient texts during this time, was it lost then? Some scholars even today believe if might not be authentic, but written by Hickes himself. As mentioned above, the continued hunt for the original is only part of frustration. As a fragment, no one knows if its 47 lines — which begins with “…the gables are burning” are the beginning, middle, or end of an either long or short work. The names and events mentioned in it

must have been familiar to the original audience, but completely unknown in Hickes time up to ours. The surviving verse is also devoid of religion, making it unique amongst every other surviving text in Old English. An exasperating hint of the verse may or may not be seen in the most famous of all Old English literature: ‘Beowulf.’ About two-thirds of the way into this epic, a poet tells a group of warriors about ‘The Battle of Finnesburg.’ Although it has some of the same names and places, it is a different story altogether, shedding little light on the fragment. Perhaps one day the original will appear, and hopefully answer the questions these 47 exceptional lines continue to ask. As for Hickes, immediately after (but not related to) the publication of his ‘Treasury of Ancient Tongues,’ James II needed his help in France. He was reinstated as a Bishop.

More Light in the Darkness L ast week I wrote about some people and events which are like points of light in the midst of what seems like such an overpowering darkness in our world. My own perspective on life (my worldview) is that these people and events are signs of God’s grace and love at work in our world. As such, it is intensely personal and idiosyncratic. Others might understand what these people are doing and the meaning of these events differently. For example, I mentioned Malala Yousafzai last week. As a Muslim woman, I don’t know if she would read the world the same way I do or not. If she is a person of devout faith, she might well see her actions in the light of her understanding of God. If she is not a person of faith, she might not. I am not claiming anything on her behalf, or on behalf of anyone else. This is my way of reading the world. This is my perspective. It is always possible that two people will read the same events in different ways. Part of the purpose of my writing these columns is to share my perspective in the hope that it might foster dialogue between people. So let me share some more instances of what I see as light in the world, signs of God’s incredible and expansive love. One of my heroes is Jean Vanier. The son of a Governor–General of Canada, Georges Vanier, and a Rhodes scholar, he grew up in a well–to–do household, with many of the perks and privileges that come along with such an upbringing. In the early 1960s, he went to visit a Catholic priest who was the chaplain of a residence which

welcomed about 30 men with an intellectual disability. It was a life–changing moment for Vanier. As a result, he bought a house in Trosly–Breuil, about 75 kilometres north of Paris. He named it L’Arche, “The Ark”. He lived there very simply with two men he had met. As he said in an interview, “I had no long-term plan. The only thing I was sure of as I began, was that this beginning was an irreversible act. Raphael, Philippe and I started very simply to live together. We cooked together, ate together, did the shopping together, and worked togethRev. Yme er in the garden. We lived Woensdregt very poorly materially,” … but it was the beginning of a movement that has circled the globe. Today, there are L’Arche homes in many of the world’s cities now, places of hope and refuge. Another instance of light is the “It Gets Better Project” with a “mission to communicate to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth around the world that it gets better, and to create and inspire the changes needed to make it better for them.” It began in September 2010 with a Youtube video created to inspire hope for young people facing harassment and bullying. In response to a number of students taking their own lives after being bullied in school, [Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller] wanted to create a personal way for supporters everywhere to tell LGBT youth that, yes, it does indeed get better.” The website has a timeline which shows many ways in which it has gotten better in many different places—countries have begun to legalize gay marriage; people are

recognizing that bullying LGBT people or discriminating against them is simply not acceptable. Another instance of light is found in the Charter of Compassion. Originally begun by Karen Armstrong in 2008, the Charter is a document (which can be signed online) promoting compassion as a way of life for all people. The website indicates that the “Charter for Compassion is a document that transcends religious, ideological, and national differences. Supported by leading thinkers from many traditions, the Charter activates the Golden Rule around the world.” An amazing part of this initiative is the “International Campaign for Compassionate Communities.” This campaign “envisions a richly diverse ‘network of networks,’ people from every sector — business, healthcare, education, government, faith and interfaith, peace and non–violence, the arts, and those working to preserve the environment — who will bring compassion to everything they do, and who will take responsibility for igniting the compassion of the general community to care for each other and for the well-being of all members of the community from birth through childhood, adolescence, and adulthood to old age and death.” These are but three examples of people and movements in the world who are committed to making this world more whole, more just, more loving. We don’t hear much about them on the news. After all, as the old adage has it, “if it bleeds, it leads.” Frankly, I’d like to hear more stories where people stop the bleeding and initiate healing and grace. The Best Moving Picture House in the West JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

Jim Cameron The Rex Theatre opened for business on Norbury (10th) Ave. on Saturday, November 28, 1912. It was not the first movie theatre in town — the Edison Theatre adjoining the Wentworth Hotel on Baker Street and the Auditorium on Norbury Avenue, directly adjacent to the newly constructed Rex Theatre had both been showing slides and moving pictures off and on for a number of years — but it was the first building whose sole design was dedicated to the increasingly popular medium of film. It was a good time to open a movie house. By 1911, moving pictures, once the dominion of low-brow nickelodeons and sideshows, were slowly becoming respectable. Although 15 minute one-reelers were still very much the norm, new companies such as Paramount, Warner Bros., RKO, Universal and Columbia were exploring the role of feature, full-length pictures, while movie distributors such as the Famous Players Film Co. were ensuring that the movies made in the young community of Hollywood were reaching theatres across the continent. Further, in 1912, a publication titled Photoplay began publication. Generally considered the first true “fan” magazine, it contributed greatly to the concept of the “movie star” among the general public. Although the movers and shakers of the day didn’t know exactly how big movies would become, they certainly knew they were on to something, so saying, when the Johnson brothers rolled into Cranbrook and struck an agreement with local contractor George Leask to construct a new movie house which he would then lease to them, they were riding the crest of what would soon become a tidal wave of film. The west side of Norbury Avenue wasn’t exactly crowded at the time. A 1911 directory lists the Palm Confectionary (now High Country Sports), the Auditorium Theatre, R. J. Binning photo studio and the original Catholic church as neighbours, with perhaps a residence or two thrown in (house numbering in the early directories was nominal, to say the least). By October, 1912, the theatre was rapidly taking shape and by late November it was ready to open. The plate glass mirrors, cosmet-

A present day view of the interior of the former theatre. In its day it was referred to as a “pleasure palace.” Photo Cameron 2014, with thanks to Nathan Troxel ic trim, assorted projection equipment and radiators were still on their way but the grand opening took place regardless. The local Prospector newspaper gushed in praise of the new theatre, claiming that the Rex Theatre “…will stand for some time to come as an example to the city of Cranbrook, in architecture and for the method of providing general comfort to its patrons. Its decorations and general appearance is par excellence, and can easily be considered the neatest and best equipped building in the city.” The “neatest and best equipped” comment may have irked local businessmen of the day but it also likely ensured continuing advertising sales for the Prospector. The interior of the theatre was fitted with an “Eye Comfort System” of special lighting (most likely a system of electric chandeliers) manufactured by the Albert Sechrist Manufacturing Co. of Denver, Colorado. The issue of safety was apparently uppermost in the mind of A.A. Johnson, the designer/ manager, as the projection booth was encased with fireproof walls and all openings fitted with automatic shutters in order to inhibit blazes from within, a not uncommon and

occasionally deadly occurrence when dealing with film of the era. On the same note, there were two large exits at the back of the building and another at the side, each marked by a red, electric “Exit” sign; a novel concept in the city. The American Seating Co. seats were deemed “so comfortable” and the general design, also by A.A. Johnson, displayed “exquisite taste.” Little else is available in terms of description of the original theatre. It would certainly have been “intimate”, if not rustic by today’s standards, but it would have undoubtedly made a distinct impression on the theatre-goers of the day. Promising an evening of high class pictures and illustrated songs (sound was not yet available on film so live singers were hired as required) the owners cannily donated all opening night proceeds to the St. Eugene Hospital. The Prospector stated as an “… absolute fact that it is the best Moving Picture House in the west today.” An exaggeration to be sure but, no mind, the undertaking proved immediately popular with the locals, drawing large crowds on a regular basis. As for the “high class entertainment”, that, too, may have

been somewhat of an overstatement considering the list of movies and accompanying comments for December 7, 1912: “Capt. Barnacles Messmate” — lot of snap and crisp, bristling fun to it. The Captain helps his friend, Bunce, out of another scrape. It has the proper spirit and we get right into it. “The Stolen Gray” — justice is dealt to horse-thieves. “The French Army” — in war maneuvers. “The Haunted Room” — an interesting comedy — will keep everyone in a maze of wonderment as to how it is done.” Well, if not high-class, the shows must have proved entertaining to an audience generally used to the varied live vaudeville acts and travelling theatre troupes next door at the auditorium. John Bunny and Norma Talmadge, the stars of Captain Barnacle, became household names among local movie goers, soon to be joined by a constant 35mm stream of others. The long-awaited radiators arrived and were installed in January, 1913; no doubt to the comfort of patrons and, by April, 1913, the Rex Theatre was changing programmes daily with the addition of four matinees each week. Next week: The Rex, Part II.

Kootenay Ice acquire veteran defenceman from Lethbridge Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

Lenny Hackman hasn’t played a WHL game since Dec. 16 as s member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Wednesday night, with a call from Kootenay Ice general manager Jeff Chynoweth, Hackman had a fresh start to look forward to across the Alberta-B.C. border in Cranbrook. “It’s definitely a big change,” Hackman said prior to practice at Western Financial Place Thursday afternoon. “I’ve been home there for the last couple of weeks and I was hoping for something to happen. Once I heard I had been traded to Kootenay, I was really excited. “I got my bags all packed up and made my way here [Thursday] morning.” The trade between the Ice and Hurricanes was finalized Thursday,

with Kootenay sending Lethbridge a 12thround pick in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft in exchange for Hackman. The native of Airdrie, Alta., joins the Ice and brings 175 games of WHL experience along with him. The 5-foot-9 defenceman isn’t expected to be a flashy power-play quarterback or offensive catalyst, but as the second-oldest blueliner on the roster behind recent addition Tanner Lishchynsky, he stands to play an important role. “He’s a 19-year-old and he’s got experience in the league. He’s not a flashy player,” said Kootenay Ice head coach Ryan McGill Thursday afternoon. “Hopefully he has a calming influence on our three young guys in [Cale] Fleury, [Bryan] Allbee and [Dylan] Overdyk. Hopefully he can help those guys. “I don’t think we have

to worry about him not having played since Dec. 16. He’s 19 years old, he’s a mature kid. He should be able to handle this league no problem.” According to McGill, Hackman is expected to suit up when the Kootenay Ice welcome the Red Deer Rebels to Western Financial Place Friday night at 7 p.m. He will wear sweater #28. While Lishchynsky turned 20 on Jan. 5, Kootenay’s newest rearguard will hit his 20-year milestone birthday Jan. 30. The 185-pound defenceman has 21 points to his credit over his 175game WHL career, which began with the 2012-13 season in Lethbridge. The Hurricanes drafted Hackman with a ninthround selection (179th overall) at the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. “I’ve been a younger guy in the league and obviously looked up to the older guys,” Hackman

Wild times in Fernie

Nitros make final regular-season trek to Fernie in search of victory Taylor Rocc a Sports Editor

The Kimberley Dynamiters are set to visit the Fernie Memorial Arena and the Eddie Mountain Division-leading Ghostriders one final time in regular-season action Friday night. The last time these two teams met in Fernie

it amounted to a wild affair, as the Ghostriders came out with a 2-1 victory Dec. 29 over their Eddie Mountain Division rivals . Ghostriders forward Justin Peers scored the eventual game-winning goal in the second period, prompting a rooster to be thrown from the

stands and on to the ice. Peers, a native of Calgary, Alta., was the lucky one left to scoop the cock-a-doodle doodler up and off the playing surface at Fernie Memorial Arena.

into the WHL Trade Deadline was to add depth to our defence corps and we are happy to add a player with Lenny Hackman’s experience and work ethic to our lineup,” Chynoweth said in a team press re-

lease. “He is an excellent skater who we are anticipating will play some key minutes on our blue line.” The WHL trade deadline rolls in at 12 p.m. (MT), Saturday, Jan. 10.

younger guys out there.” The Ice are now carrying nine defencemen on the active roster, though Tanner Faith is scheduled to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. “Our goal heading

The Red Deer Rebels visit Cranbrook Friday night and head coach Ryan McGill’s Kootenay Ice plan to be ready for a recently-bolstered Central Division rival. Since the two teams last met Jan. 2 in Red Deer (a 5-3 win for the Ice), Rebels head coach and general manager Brent Sutter went out and made a splash on the WHL trade front, acquiring forward Connor Gay and a bundle of WHL Bantam Draft selections from the Regina Pats in exchange for prospect Jake Leschyshyn and a 2017 fourth-round pick. At 6-feet tall and 190 pounds, Gay brings size and offensive finish to the Rebels, having tallied 20 goals and 44 points through 39 games prior to his trade to Red Deer. “First and foremost against [the Rebels], you have to outwork them,” McGill said Thursday. “If you’re willing to be competitive and outwork them, then you’re going to have a chance. You have to try to create turnovers and when you

create turnovers, you take advantage. “Gay gives them more size, gives them some more skill and gives them some more grit. For them, it’s a positive and for us, it’s another challenge.” While the Rebels are boosted by the addition of Gay, McGill’s squad will receive an injection as well. Fresh off medal-winning performances at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship (WJC), captain Sam Reinhart and defenceman Rinat Valiev return to the Kootenay Ice. “[The experience at the WJC] is different for every guy,” said McGill, who was a part of Canada’s coaching staff at the 2014 WJC. “Last year, Sam came back and he was unbelievable. You saw this year at the tournament, he was unbelievable. He’s a smart player. You would like to think the tournament spring-boarded him into the second half [of last season] but I really believe it’s just the way he is as a player.” Upon returning to the Kootenay Ice from the WJC in 2014, Reinhart registered points in 19

consecutive games -- a whopping 18 goals and 26 assists. In 27 games following the WJC last season, the North Vancouver native was only blanked on the scoresheet three times, as he wrapped up 20 goals and 55 points en route to becoming the second-overall selection of the Buffalo Sabres at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. “Certainly, the guys coming back -- Rinat and Sam -- should be coming back with a lot of confidence because of how high a level they were playing at,” McGill added. “Hopefully the [other] guys can keep up to that pace of thinking. Really, that’s what it’s about -- thinking fast, making good plays with elite players.” Valiev, who attended his first WJC with Team Russia, was sick and unavailable for comment Thursday afternoon. As for Reinhart, he is scheduled to fly into Cranbrook Friday afternoon in time to suit up against the Rebels. Since Reinhart departed for the WJC Dec. 10, alternate captain Jaedon Descheneau has been doing all he can to carry his team’s offence.

In eight games without the captain, Descheneau stacked up five goals and eight assists. The native of Edmonton, Alta., had a seven-game point streak snapped last Saturday in a 3-1 loss against his hometown Oil Kings, but will look to start a new streak Friday. “We’ve got to play them the way we played them last Friday,” Descheneau said of facing the Rebels. “Play them hard, get pucks behind their ‘D’ and work the cycle game down low to find areas and penetrate the middle of the ice.” Heading into Friday, the Rebels (21-14-3-2, 47 points) hold third place in the WHL’s Central Division while the Ice (2118-0-1, 43) remain close behind in fourth. The Ice and Rebels have split four games in a seven-game season series to this point in the campaign. Both Ice victories over the Rebels came in Red Deer by identical scores of 5-3 (Sept. 19 & Jan. 2), while the Rebels earned a 7-1 win on home ice Sept. 27 and a 7-3 triumph in Cranbrook on Oct. 31. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Nitros visit Ghostriders in Eddie Mountain Division showdown Continued from page 8

Following last Friday’s ineligible-player snafu that cost his team two points against the Columbia Valley Rockies, head coach Jerry Bancks and the Nitros will look to return to the win column. “One thing you want to always try to do is make sure the other team doesn’t outwork you in preparation,” Bancks said looking forward to the date with Fernie after last Saturday’s 7-3 win over the Rockies. “That’s not going to happen. We’re going to prepare hard this week.” The Dynamiters will need to work hard if they’re to come out with a victory Friday night as they head to Fernie still crippled by injuries. Forward Jared Marchi (lower body, indefinite) was stretchered off the ice the last time these

MINNEAPOLIS Former Minnesota North Stars standout J.P. Parise, who was also a member of Canada’s 1972 Summit Series team, has died from lung cancer. He was 73. The Minnesota Wild said Thursday that Parise died Wednesday night at his home in the Minneapolis suburb of Prior Lake. Son and Wild star Zach Parise informed the team of his father’s death. During his playing career, Parise is most remembered for skating on a line with Phil Esposito and Wayne Cashman during the Summit Series and getting ejected in the seventh game. The native of Smooth Rock Falls, Ont., spent most of his NHL career with the North Stars and was chosen to two allstar teams. He had 594 points (238 goals, 356 assists) in 890 games from 196579 with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, North Stars, New York Islanders and Cleveland Barons. Parise helped oversee the growth of NHL stars Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews. Zach Parise also went to Shattuck and is now in his 10th NHL season and third with the Wild.

addition to Birds, naturalists are interested in a wide variety topics pertaining to nature. The range of themes include Physiology and Geology, Weather and Climate, Ecology and Botany. Insects, Fishes, Reptiles and Amphibians as well as Mammals can be observed and studied directly. Recreation and Night Sky are not to be overlooked! The Rocky Mountain Naturalists want to know about everything natural in the East Kootenay. We organize regular hikes, snowshoe and bike trips, friendly competitions and guest presenters to help us discover and understand the wealth of experience in our corner of the province. Of course, whenever we are outdoors deciphering animal tracks in the snow or contemplating ‘sun dogs’ in the sky, the sight and sound of wild birds catch our attention. Volunteer citizen scientists have now completed the 115th annual Christmas Bird Count. The information they collect not only keeps track of birds, but it helps monitor the state of our environment. The bird count isn’t so much a census of birds as it is a gauge of how birds and the environment are doing. Comparing one year’s count with another, gives an indication of trends in bird populations. A drastic drop in numbers of one species can be a warning that something is amiss, prompting further studies and action. Many of those involved with the Christmas count are enthusiastic birders with a range of expertise. Some have recently discovered wild birds by watching their feeders, while others have enjoyed the lifelong hobby and its rewards. Fernie, Elkford, Cranbrook and Kimberley organized counts again this year. The weather was cooperative and participants observed the dozens of species which are capa-

ble of wintering in the East Kootenay. It was a relief to see the return of many of the winter finches; seed eating birds which live in the northern forests and often visit feeders. In Cranbrook, on Dec. 20, 15 field counters met at Elizabeth Lake, a mild, overcast day. We formed groups and searched each of the four pre-determined quadrants. We quietly hopped out of the vehicle whenever there was a safe spot with bird action, reminding each other which species might prefer the habitat at hand. Sometimes it seemed no birds were present; but often several new species would suddenly be found in a particular spot. The Cranbrook area has a wide variety of habitats; we attempted to visit all of them without spending too much time in one area. Flat light adds to the challenge of making a quick, accurate identification. Some birds don’t say much either, as they would in the spring or summer. We had to rely on observations of perching posture, flight characteristics, number of birds in a group and foraging behaviour in order to narrow down the possibilities. After the count-up that evening, and in

comparison with tallies dating back 31 years, some statistics became obvious. We counted an impressive 46 species, not including five more which were seen during ‘count week’. This represents a little over half of the species which have been observed in all previous counts. Seven species were present in numbers which equalled or exceeded previous count records. These include 389 Mallards, 37 Buffleheads, 1 Common Loon, 12 Grey Jays, 25 Blue Jays, 6 Chestnut-backed Chickadees and 181 European Starlings. One little bird provided lots of evidence that he was feeding on bark beetles around Cranbrook. Often we saw standing larch and yellow pine trees whose stems were brighter and redder than their healthy neighbours. We suspected that some type of woodpecker was searching for dying trees and flaking off the outer bark in order to find food. It wasn’t until the late afternoon of the Kimberly count on January 4 that we finally solved the puzzle. In this case ‘he’ was a female Blackbacked Woodpecker, a rare, year-round bird. This bird is named for its entirely glossy black upperparts, which camouflage it against the

Black-backed woodpecker burnt bark of the trees it typically inhabits. It moves from place to place following outbreaks of wood-boring beetles. The more common Hairy Woodpecker has more white on the head, neck and back; the Black-backed male has a fine yellow cap. During the non-breeding season, individuals may move south of the normal breeding range. Movements may be just a few wandering individuals or irruptions involving many birds. Irruptions have been attributed to a lack of wood-boring insect prey on their normal range or to over-

population following an insect outbreak. This bird is considered a species of special concern in some areas. Because of low densities and the ephemeral nature of it’s preferred habitat, true population estimates are difficult to obtain. Here is the species list for the Cranbrook count; watch for the Kimberley results next week. Submitted by Daryl Calder on behalf of Rocky Mountain Naturalists. HOROSCOPES by Jacqueline Bigar

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You seem to be “all work and no play,” even if you are not at your job. This very serious approach allows you to be focused and driven. Follow your instincts if you are facing some confusion. A partner or associate could be extremely controlling. Tonight: Relax to good music. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your circle of friends could have different concerns from your loved ones. Today, they might pull you in different directions, and you’ll feel the resulting tension. Detach, and see if there is a way you can find a solution that works for everyone. Tonight: Have some fun. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Tension continues to build on the homefront. The only person you can control is yourself. Therefore, it would be wise to take up a stress-busting activity or pastime. When you relax, others will, too. Be careful with a loved one who is very controlling. Tonight: Be a duo.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Reach out to a close relative or neighbor who understands where you are coming from. You cannot deny the bond that exists between you. Be sure to listen to your inner voice. Romance, music and a foreigner could intertwine. Tonight: TGIF! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might be deluding yourself about the ramifications of a recent major purchase. Relax with others, and know that you can make a different choice. A conversation could lead to a power play. Don’t lose sight of your long-term objectives. Tonight: Don’t push too hard. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You might be confused by a friend who doesn’t always hear you well. Be patient; otherwise, you could lose your temper. Go along with the moment, and know full well that you could be dealing with a manipulative person. Tonight: Paint the town red. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Your ability to get past an issue will depend on whether you

Tundra

can let go of your need to control others. You might express a tentative interest in opening up a discussion. Think carefully about this before making a decision. Tonight: Vanish before your popularity overwhelms you. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Friends pave the way to your success. You also will receive a lot of support from these same people. Perhaps it is time for a thank-you card. When all of you are together, there tends to be an air of camaraderie among you. Communicate with care. Tonight: Hang out at home. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Take charge of an important project with which you have been involved. Your ability to move past obstacles will emerge. Others seem delighted to have you at the helm of the ship because of your leadership capability. Tonight: A force to be reckoned with. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Reach out to someone at a distance once more. If you can take off for a day trip, by all means, do. Be sure that you and this

person are on the same page. A misunderstanding could result in a rift between the two of you. Tonight: Let your feelings lead the way. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You will see a personal matter differently after you have a chat with a key person. Pressure could force you to look for an unusual answer. Refuse to get uptight about a problem you tend to focus on too much, which could make a situation even more difficult. Tonight: Opt for togetherness. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You could wake up feeling as if you have not a care in the world. You certainly seem to be wearing a pair of rose-colored glasses. See where your optimism takes you. For many of you, it will help you manifest more positive interactions. Tonight: Let the party begin! ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My parents are getting divorced after 22 years of marriage, and it seems to be strongly affecting my mother in a terribly negative way. Mom has told me that she has contemplated suicide twice. Once, she even held my brother’s gun to her head. Everyone in the family, including my grandmother, my aunts and even my boyfriend, thinks Mom needs counseling. So how do I suggest it without making her think I’m calling her “crazy”? And another problem is the cost. Mom may refuse to go because it’s too expensive. Do you have any suggestions that may help? -- Concerned Daughter Dear Daughter: All mentions of suicide should be taken seriously. You are right that your mother could benefit from professional help, and it doesn’t need to be expensive. Tell her you are worried about her and it might help if she talks to someone about her feelings. Free and low-cost help is available through local churches, graduate school counseling departments, medical school psychology departments, United Way, the YMCA, the YWCA, The Samaritan Institute (samaritaninstitute.org), NAMI (nami.org) and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (suicidepreventionhotline.org), and through support groups such as the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (dbsalliance.org) and Recovery International (lowselfhelpsystems. org). Do a little research on her behalf and make a suggestion, including a website or phone number, so she can get the help she needs. You could even offer to go with her. Dear Annie: We recently hired a young woman at our business. Like many other 20-somethings, she doesn’t understand personal boundaries. May I use your column to give her some advice? Dear Miss New Hire: Welcome to our company. You got the job over five other highly qualified candidates, which means you are both smart and lucky, but you still have a lot to learn. If you work hard here, you can go far. Let me tell you a couple of secrets: You are no longer in college. Standards may have changed, but it is still not acceptable to bring all of your problems into the office and discuss them at length. Twenty minutes complaining about your roommate is excessive. So is another 20 minutes on your boyfriend’s ex, your sister’s drinking, your mother’s bodily functions and who you slept with last night. Not only are you wasting time, but you are disturbing others. And they will repeat everything you say to everyone they know -- including your boss. You would be so much better off asking questions and learning the workflow and the purpose of procedures. You are the only one who can make your career path a good one. Start now. Look down the road to where you want to be. If your path continues as it is, I give you six months here. -- W.A. Dear W.A.: Thank you for your honesty. Over-sharing is common, and not only with 20-somethings. Too many people display their entire lives in front of the world and believe this is normal and acceptable. They do not understand the concept of privacy. We hope it will make a comeback soon. Dear Annie: I’d like to respond to the letter from “Ventura, Calif.,” who questioned whether alcoholism is a disease. As a 33-year recovering alcoholic, I have better knowledge about this than self-righteous folks with superior attitudes. There is no question that alcoholism is a disease. Only a fool would say it is a choice. The afflicted person has a discernible difference in the brain that results in a disproportionately pleasant response to alcohol. And whenever anyone chooses to have a drink, it is for the same reason an alcoholic does: to change the way they feel at that moment. Otherwise, a glass of water would do just as well. -- Anonymous Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. B.C. students await rocket liftoff to launch science experiment into space

Dale Bass, K amloops This Week CANADIAN PRESS

KAMLOOPS, B.C. - Four British Columbia boys are hoping a third attempt will finally launch their elementary-school science experiment into space on Saturday aboard a rocket set to blast off from Cape Canaveral, Fla. A technical failure on Tuesday failed to transport the experiment to the International Space Station. Last October, a NASA-contracted rocket left the ground in Virginia and exploded, leaving the students to duplicate their efforts. “At least it didn’t blow up this time,” project co-ordinator Paul Hembling said of the aborted launch on Tuesday,

when he was up at 3 a.m. to see the rocket go skyward. Jordan Brown, Hunter Galbraith, Kieren O’Neill and Ryan Watson of Kamloops created the experiment in Grade 7, winning a district-wide contest to take part in the program. It’s the only Canadian experiment to be chosen by the National Center for Earth and Space Station Education from among 17 other student projects set to go into space. Hembling, principal at Bert Edwards Science and Technology School, said Saturday’s attempt will happen at 1:45 a.m. PT, with next Tuesday scheduled as a backup launch day if necessary. There have been several other pre-launch delays since

the four students, now at Sa-Hali Secondary, completed their task. Hembling said some of the initial excitement has started to lose its glow, but the delays are part of the many lessons the students have learned along the way. “It has now been almost a year since these boys - then in Grade 7, now almost halfway through Grade 8 - designed their experiment, so I think they all share a feeling of, `Let’s get on with this already,’ as do we all,” he said. “Although the explosion was very exciting and gathered us much international attention, the reason we have put so much time and energy into this is not to keep watching it attempt to launch.”

Computer program devises poker strategy Malcolm Ritter ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK - A computer program that taught itself to play poker has created nearly the best possible strategy for one version of the game, showing the value of techniques that may prove useful to help decision-making in medicine and other areas. The program considered 24 trillion simulated poker hands per second for two months, probably playing more poker than all humanity has ever experienced, says Michael Bowling, who led the project. The resulting strategy still

won’t win every game because of bad luck in the cards. But over the long run thousands of games - it won’t lose money. “We can go against the best (players) in the world and the humans are going to be the ones that lose money,” said Bowling, of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. The strategy applies specifically to a game called headsup limit Texas Hold ‘em. While scientists have created poker-playing programs for years, Bowling’s result stands out because it comes so close to “solving” its version of the

game, which essentially means creating the optimal strategy. Poker is hard to solve because it involves imperfect information, where a player doesn’t know everything that has happened in the game he is playing - specifically, what cards the opponent has been dealt. Many real-world challenges like negotiations and auctions also include imperfect information, which is one reason why poker has long been a proving ground for the mathematical approach to decision-making called game theory.

Working alongside the boys and their teacher was Thompson Rivers University chemistry Prof. Sharon Brewer who, along with dean of science Tom Dickinson, provided the group with a lab to work on their experiment. The students designed it to examine how the zero-gravity environment of space affects the growth of crystals. They were intrigued with the chemical reactions that turn two liquids into a solid and designed their experiment around that. Along the way, the boys discovered that liquids became a fluffy snowflake-like solid if they came together quickly, but more needlelike if a filter was added to slow the chemical process.

VANCOUVER - Scientists were fairly certain that a matron killer whale from an endangered pod off British Columbia’s coast had given birth to the newest calf - then new evidence made them change that opinion. Ken Balcomb, from the Center for Whale Research in Washington state, said they spotted bite marks on the female calf that led them to believe another whale acted as a type of marine midwife. “We suspect what happens sometimes in these troubled deliveries, is that another whale sort of gently bites the little baby and pulls it out, and leaves teeth marks,” he said. “We can definitely see the teeth marks and we surmise that it’s an assisted delivery.” A killer whale that’s know to be in her early 40s was spotted swimming alongside the new baby near B.C.’s Gulf Islands on Dec. 30. The orca, known as J-16, has given birth to at least five calves in the past and likely wouldn’t need assistance because of her experience, Balcomb said. Researchers now believe J-16 is instead the offspring’s grandmother. He said experts are working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to determine whether J-16 is really the calf’s mother, or if she has just been “babysitting” for her daughter, a whale called J-36. Killer whales exhibit caring for one another, and babysitting is not unusual, especially with grandmothers, said a statement from the Center for Whale Research. The newborn calf called J-50 is the newest addition to J pod, the dwindling southern resident orca population is found in the waters off B.C. and Washington state. Before the calf was born, researchers were “betting on several young females on who’s going to have the next baby,” he said. In December, a pregnant whale from the same pod was found dead in the waters off Vancouver Island. Necropsy results show that she died of infection, which likely originated with her nearly full-term female calf and then spread to its mother. Balcomb said if the mother of the new calf is J-16, she will be the oldest southern resident orca known to give birth in more than four decades of field studies. The new calf was first spotted with J-16 near Pender Island, a Southern Gulf Island, and the pod has been making its way north toward Nanaimo, on the east coast of Vancouver Island.

Morse masterpiece coming to California ASSOCIATED PRESS

SAN MARINO, Calif. “Gallery of the Louvre,” the artistic masterpiece Samuel F.B. Morse painted in the years before he developed the telegraph, comes to The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens later this month in its first stop on a nine-city U.S. tour. The oil-on-canvas work, measuring 6 feet by 9 feet, imagines dozens of the world’s great artworks assembled in a gallery at the Louvre in Paris. It includes reproductions of

works by Rembrandt, Rubens and others being viewed by several spectators. Although best known as the developer of Morse code and the telegraph, Morse’s early career was as a painter. He created “Gallery of the Louvre” in Paris and New York between 1831 and 1833 when he was in his early 40s. His 7-foot-by-10-foot “House of Representatives,” painted in 1822, hangs in the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington. After studying science,

art and other subjects at Yale, Morse supported himself for a time as a portrait artist. His ambition, he once wrote to his parents, was “to rival the genius of a Raphael, a Michelangelo or a Titian.” Although “Gallery of the Louvre” drew positive reviews from critics when it was unveiled, the public response was tepid, and Morse abandoned art for science and technology. He sent his first telegraph message - “what hath God wrought” - in 1844.
